Tesla becomes world’s most valuable carmaker without making a profit | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Tesla has overhauled Japanese rival Toyota to become the world’s most valuable automotive company.
Despite never having made a profit, the billionaire Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturer has been tipped by some pundits to achieve a valuation of more than $1tn (£800bn) as demand for electric vehicles soars.
Shares in Tesla climbed by more than 4% during Wednesday to more than $1,100 apiece, giving the company a valuation of $209bn, ahead of Toyota on $205bn. The increase means Tesla has now outstripped Toyota on the stock market, even factoring in differences in the way that companies are valued in the US and Japan.
Tesla’s performance is all the more remarkable given that it has never made a profit, but analysts have pointed to the company’s prospects as a market leader in battery-powered vehicle technology.
Analysts at the stockbroker Jefferies said the coronavirus pandemic could accelerate the speed at which the world adopts cleaner fuels.
“We see Covid-19 as an accelerator of the transition to EVs [electric vehicles] and renewables, from consumers and public policy,” they said.
“Tesla remains significantly ahead of peers in product range, capacity and technology.”
Excitement has also been building around a so-called “million mile” battery lasting up to 16 years, which Tesla’s Chinese supplier Catl has been working on and which is predicted to lower the cost of electric vehicles.
The rise in Tesla’s share price is doubly good news for Musk, who enjoys a controversial pay arrangement linked to the company’s stock market performance that could theoretically hand him a $55bn bonus.
Under the scheme corporate governance experts have described as “staggering”, Musk must build Tesla into a $650bn company over the next 10 years, meaning the company’s share price will have to more than treble from Wednesday’s price of $209bn.

Pirc, an influential adviser to shareholders, including the UK’s local authority pension funds, said this week that investors should vote against Tesla’s executive pay deal because it “unfairly enriches the chief executive”.
Ahead of Wednesday’s symbolic moment, Tesla appeared to have eclipsed Toyota earlier this month, according to the way that Wall Street values listed businesses.
Posts on Twitter in mid-June praised the company for reaching a stock market valuation of $184bn on the Nasdaq exchange, ahead of Toyota on $179bn, drawing approval from Musk via his own account on the social media platform.

But the Tokyo stock exchange measures stock market valuation differently, counting shares that companies hold in themselves and which cannot be purchased by outside investors.
Such shares, which are described as being held “in Treasury”, are the result of firms buying their own stock to boost returns to investors.
The practice is sometimes criticised as an artificial means of propping up a company’s stock market performance.
Including Treasury shares, Toyota remained the world’s most valuable carmaker at $205bn, until Tesla blew past that watermark on Wednesday. Tesla does not hold any shares in Treasury.

35% of the World’s Population are Gamers According to New Report | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The research also overviewed the estimated revenue from the gaming industry based on devices. In 2020, the gaming sector is set to generate $159.3 billion in revenue with mobile accounting for 48% at $77.2 billion. Under mobile games revenue, gamers on tablets will spend $13.7 billion accounting for 9% of the entire revenue generated in 2020. On the other hand smartphone games whose revenue is projected to stand at $63.6 billion accounts for 40% of the global revenue from the gaming sector.

Number of gamers per region. Sourced from Finbold.
Game consoles like PlayStation series are set to generate the second-highest revenue in 2020 at $45.2 billion or 28% of the global tally. PC games will account for 23% of the global revenue cumulatively at $36.9 billion. Under PC games boxed and downloaded games will attract $33.9 billion or 21% of the total revenue while browser PC gamers will spend approximately $3.08 billion or 9% of the total revenue to be generated in 2020.
COVID-19 contributes to gaming explosion
The estimated revenue from 2020’s gaming sector is high considering that with the coronavirus pandemic, gaming has offered an escape route for those in lockdown. Home entertainment is among the few available options while in lockdown as cinemas and theatres remain closed. This scenario gives gaming a higher priority.
For example, video live streaming service Twitch added 3.46 million new streamers representing a growth of 87.81% between January and May this year. The growth was directly attributed to the pandemic.
The growing gaming population and revenue can also be linked to the emergence of cloud gaming. With cloud technology, cloud gaming is now a reality. Under cloud gaming, the server, where all the games are stored, does all the computation work, like game scene rendering, game logic processing video encoding, and video streaming.
Competition and smartphones to drive gaming explosion
The high forecast in revenue will also be driven by the competitive edge among the big players in the gaming sector. For example, Microsoft will launch ‘Scarlet Nexus’ in Xbox Series X, by the end of 2020. The game is expected to support the key technical features of the Xbox Series X like real-time ray tracing and super-fast loading times.
At the same time, Sony launched the first look of the DualSense wireless controller that comes alongside Playstation 5. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players. DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to chat with friends without a headset easily.
The mobile gaming under smartphones is also expected to lead the gaming explosion. The penetration of smartphones alongside investment in the 5G infrastructure is playing a key role in this success. Notably, smartphones support casual games and hyper-casual genres of games that are quick to download, easy to play, and lend themselves to being played in short sessions throughout the day. These games are accessible by almost every person in the society.

Museums hold Twitter showdown to find world’s creepiest object | Culture- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A zombie blowfish, a hideous mermaid and a lucky charm made out of a dead man’s finger are all competing to be crowned the creepiest exhibits in the world after an archaeological museum in the north of England challenged curators during the lockdown to showcase their most sinister object.
Since its closure due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Yorkshire Museum in York has launched a weekly #curatorbattle on social media to challenge museums and visitors to put forward objects related to a particular theme.
On Friday, the museum kicked off last week’s informal competition with a picture of a hair bun from the burial of a Roman woman in the third or fourth century, with the hair clips still in place. It has been engaged with online more than 220,000 times, with museums from Germany, France, Canada and the USA responding.

Millicent Carroll at York Museums Trust said: “The curator battle has been gradually building as more and more museums and the general public look at our Twitter feed every Friday to see what theme we’re going to pitch. Last week’s ‘Best Egg’ had replies from the Hermitage in Russia and the American Museum of Tempemail History, but the creepiest object has taken it to another level.
“It is great for us and other museums to be able to still share our collections with the public when our doors are closed – we just hope we haven’t given anyone any nightmares!”

Volunteers create world’s fastest supercomputer to combat coronavirus | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Volunteers create world’s fastest supercomputer to combat coronavirus | Technology – Blog – Tempemail.co

The world’s fastest supercomputer has been created from volunteers loaning spare time on their home PCs to fold proteins, a scientific task that could prove instrumental in tackling the coronavirus.
According to [email protected], the organisation that runs the distributed computing effort, the combined power of the network broke 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second – or one “exaflop” – on 25 March.
That made it six times more powerful than the current world’s fastest traditional supercomputer, the IBM Summit, which is used for scientific research at the US’s Oak Ridge Tempemail Laboratory. By Monday, it had more than doubled that, hitting a new record of 2.4 exaflops, faster than the top 500 traditional supercomputers combined, thanks to almost 1 million new members of the network.
The breakthrough reflects a huge spike in support for the [email protected] project. Backers run a simple piece of software on their home computer, which then downloads and performs small tasks to help determine the physical structure of proteins.

“>All complex proteins are made of one or more strings of amino acids, folded in on themselves in complex – but predictable – ways to make 3D shapes. By applying those predictable rules, even a home computer can carry out folding calculations, and when millions of home computers are running the software at the same time, the total network can far outpace traditional supercomputers.
In March, [email protected] announced a new set of tasks related to Covid-19 that would put contributors to work simulating the dynamics of the proteins that make up Sars-Cov-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19) to hunt for new prospects for drugs to tackle the disease.
It is already paying off. One effort has been focusing on the “spike” protein that Sars-Cov-2 uses to invade human cells, says Greg Bowman, one of the researchers coordinating the effort. “It is well established that the spike must undergo a dramatic opening motion to reveal the interface that ultimately binds a human cell. Understanding how the spike opens up … could be extremely useful. Every step along the way could potentially be targeted with therapeutics.
“Unfortunately, there is no way to watch a spike undergo this transition, at least with existing experimental techniques. Data on what the open state even looks like is also limited.” But after just a few weeks of project time, the team was able to create a simulation that showed the first stage of the “mouth” opening up.
Those successes have taken the project far beyond its previous peak in 2007, when Sony built support for [email protected] into its PlayStation 3 consoles, increasing the amount of processing power available at a stroke.
Since then, interest has waxed and waned. [email protected]ome and similar projects were hurt by the rise of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, which offered another, less altruistic, use for “spare” processing power: “mining” for coins that could make real money. But the project also saw a boost in early March, just days before it announced its new Covid-19 focus, when [email protected], the pioneer distributed computing effort, shut down.
[email protected] had been sending radio telescope data to computers around the world since 1999, which would then be analysed for signs of extraterrestrial life. But last month, the researchers behind it closed the program, saying they had analysed “all the data we need” for the foreseeable future.
“It’s a lot of work for us to manage the distributed processing of data,” [email protected]’s organisers said. “We need to focus on completing the back-end analysis of the results we already have, and writing this up in a scientific journal paper.”

World’s Largest Gaming Event E3 2020 Officially Cancelled | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Business Insider

Tempemail previously reported on the supposed cancellation of the Electronic Entertainment Expo – E3 – for 2020, with many publications stating that companies close to the event were in the process of pulling out as the cancellation announcements were soon expected.
Not a few hours after the article was posted, E3 released a statement confirming the massive gaming and entertainment expo was officially canceled.

The E3 team is devastated to share this news. This decision was not reached lightly, but it is the right one for the health and safety of all involved. Read our statement here: https://t.co/1uOWxTerN9 pic.twitter.com/gD2IxNACLX
— E3 (@E3) March 11, 2020

“After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors, and our longtime E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020,” reads the statement on the event’s official website.
“Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.”
The event scheduled for 9 – 11 June in the Los Angeles Convention Center has been ongoing since 1995. This is the event’s first-ever cancellation in its 25-year history. 2020’s event was slated by the Expo to have its largest-ever line-up of video game power-houses with companies like Nintendo, Ubisoft, Bethesda, and others ready to announce their latest and greatest titles.
Microsoft was expected to release new information about their next-generation console the Xbox Series X at the event including official retail prices. Sony opted out of last year’s event and was not slated for E3 2020.
The expo organizers suggest that they are going to go forward with plans to coordinate online exhibit experiences with members in order to allow for the showcasing of major industry news announcements. Whether this will include plans from Microsoft and the larger companies are yet unknown.
Popular publisher Devolver Digital is already considering running their own Livestream to make their announcements in place of E3’s stage.
“We thank everyone who shared their views on reimagining E3 this year. We look forward to bringing you E3 2021 as a reimagined event that brings fans, media, and the industry together in a showcase that celebrates the global video game industry.”
The expo is reaching out directly to attendees and exhibitors to provide full refunds.
E3 will join no less than 10 other major international tech events to be cancelled due to fears about the novel coronavirus and its spread. Vox reports that losses expected from cancelling events like E3, SXSW and the MWC are already exceeding $1 billion.

PlayStation 2: Sony launched the world’s best-selling game console 20 years ago today – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: It’s hard to believe but today marks the 20th anniversary of the PlayStation 2, a console that converted millions of people into lifelong gamers. Are you one of them?
Sony released the successor to its original PlayStation in Japan on March 4, 2000, although gamers in other regions would have to wait more than seven additional months for local launches. The console boasted improved graphics, backward compatibility with original PS games and the ability to play DVDs.
For some, the PlayStation 2 doubled as their first DVD player.
Looking back at the console’s North American launch titles, there isn’t really anything that stands out as a platform-defining game. Several franchises did get their start on the console, however, including God of War, Devil May Cry and Ratchet & Clank. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas still holds the title of best- selling PS2 game ever.

What are some of your best memories or favorite games from the PS2 era?
I was a diehard console gamer up until my late teens when the PC abruptly captured all of my attention, just before the PS2 launched. As such, I don’t really have many fond memories of the console aside from the few hours logged when playing at friends’ houses.

AMD CPUs and GPUs will power the future world’s fastest supercomputer, 10x faster than current leader – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: The ‘El Capitan’ supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) will be built with both AMD processors and GPUs. It is expected to pack more than 2 exaFLOPs of performance and will come online in early 2023. El Capitan will be a huge leap forward in supercomputing performance with more power than the current top 200 fastest systems combined. That is also 10 times faster than the current fastest system.
The new system will be maintained by the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Its main purpose will be to help model how America’s existing nuclear weapons stockpile is aging through simulations and artificial intelligence.
In addition to national security workloads, El Capitan will also target some other key areas. This includes a partnership with the National Cancer Institute and additional DOE labs to accelerate research towards cancer drugs and how certain proteins mutate. El Capitan will also be used in research to help fight climate change.

This system is a big win for both AMD and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), who designed the system. Supercomputers used to be dominated by Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs, but AMD’s improvements in both sectors are starting to eat away at that.
El Capitan will use 4th generation EPYC CPUs, codenamed “Genoa,” based on the Zen 4 architecture. On the GPU side, it will use Radeon Instinct cards with the 3rd generation Infinity architecture.

The compute hardware will be implemented using Cray’s Shasta system and Slingshot interconnect.
This features a 4:1 GPU to CPU ration with local flash storage for improved access speed. To help manage the massive heat generated by such a system, the blades are all individually water cooled. In addition to El Capitan, HPE and DOE are also working on two other exascale systems, Aurora and Frontier.

Honeywell to launch the world’s most powerful quantum computer by mid 2020 – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Honeywell expects to release the most powerful quantum computer to date – one with a quantum volume of at least 64 – by the middle of 2020, or within the next three months. According to the company, its new system will have twice the quantum volume of the next alternative in the industry.
Not simply a measure of qubits, quantum volume additionally considers the connectivity and low error rate of qubits.
Honeywell said it has a team of more than 100 engineers, scientists and software developers working on its quantum computer. It anticipates increasing its quantum volume by an order of magnitude each year for at least the next five years.
The company first announced its quantum computing efforts in 2018 but had been laying the foundation for a decade prior. Late last year, the conglomerate announced a partnership with Microsoft to provide access to its quantum computer through Microsoft Azure Quantum services.

Honeywell on Tuesday also announced a collaboration with JPMorgan Chase to develop quantum algorithms using its new computer. Furthermore, the company’s venture capital arm, Honeywell Ventures, is investing in quantum software and algorithm providers Zapata Computing and Cambridge Quantum Computing.
For all of the recent advancements in quantum computing, researchers have still only scratched the surface in their understanding of the peculiar machines and their odd behavior. And not everyone is convinced of their potential.
Physicist Michel Dyakonov from the Université Montpellier in France told CNET late last year that he doesn’t believe quantum computers will ever become practical. “The quest for ‘supremacy’ is somewhat artificial and belongs more to the hype than to science. Just show us an elementary quantum calculator that can do three times five or three plus five.”

As software continues to be a competitive differentiator in the broad marketplace and DevOps transforms software delivery, elimination of complexity and increased speed are critical to ensure success. By delivering leading tools in an all-in-one solution, the JFrog Platform is empowering organizations, developers and DevOps engineers to meet increased delivery requirements.
“Digital transformation in the enterprise is driven by software, and software is being indisputably transformed by DevOps,” said Shlomi Ben Haim, CEO, and co-founder of JFrog. “As global enterprises adopt cloud-native practices to increase speed, security, and automation, they demand DevOps solutions that allow them to avoid vendor lock-in – both in technology and infrastructure choices. We’re honored to respect and reflect these requirements with universal, hybrid, multi-cloud solutions.”
Spearheading DevOps trends is hardly new for JFrog, having provided several industry firsts, including the first universal package manager with JFrog Artifactory, and then providing Artifactory as the world’s first highly available (HA), cross-data center, infinitely scalable solution for DevOps. Further, JFrog spearheaded the first recursive binary scanner that provides pipeline security and dependency graphs (via the JFrog Xray product), and JFrog is now providing the first hybrid, end-to-end, universal, integrated DevOps platform.
Another laudable element of the JFrog Platform release is the inclusion and full integration of JFrog Pipelines for CI/CD automation and orchestration. The outcropping of JFrog’s acquisition of Shippable in 2019, JFrog Pipelines is a centralized cloud-native CI/CD product that can be scaled across thousands of concurrent pipelines, universally supporting DevOps workflows across an entire organization and delivering orchestration and visibility at enterprise scale from code to production.
“This release is a game-changer for the DevOps community and our customers,” said Dror Bereznitsky, CPO of JFrog. “Since announcing our plans for the JFrog Platform and JFrog Pipelines in 2019, we’ve worked to address the needs of the DevOps industry that relies heavily on CI/CD solutions. Developers told us they required a more unified and centralized solution for next-generation DevOps automation that streamlines their portfolio. As developers ourselves who know the pain, we’re excited and proud to have met the challenge with JFrog Pipelines and the JFrog Platform.”

Congratulations, Cosmin! The world’s seventh million-dollar bug bounty hacker- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The entire Tempemail team is beyond excited that the ranks of seven-figure-earning hackers have risen to eight this month.
Cosmin (@inhibitor181) is the seventh to join this talented group of hackers, proving to the world that the concept of hacking as a viable career has become a reality. Not only are more hackers earning most or all of their income from hacking, but they’re also making a good living doing it. Besides the eight hackers passing the $1 million earnings milestone, twelve more hit $500,000 in lifetime earnings and 146 earned $100,000, up from 50 last year. That puts a hacking career well above today’s global average IT salary of $89,732. Read more in The 2020 Hacker Report, launched today!
We sat down with Cosmin to learn how he got started, what contributed to his success, and his views on the industry’s present and future. Congratulations, Cosmin!
Q: Tell us a little about yourself! What’s your handle? Where are you from/living?
A: Hey! My name is Cosmin and my hacker handle is inhibitor181. I am 30 years old, I was born and raised in Romania, Bucharest and have been living with my wife and 2 dogs in Germany for the past 6 years.
Q: How did you first get into hacking?
A: Totally by accident; it’s kind of a funny story. While working as a dev, we were allowed to pick for our future development an event or course. I, with a few colleagues, picked a practical hacking seminar in Hamburg and there I found out about the existence of bug bounty platforms. Quickly enough, I have made an account, was miserable at first, but slowly, slowly gained more experience and now I have been doing it full-time for almost 2 years.
Q: What does an average day look like for you?
A: I usually work while my wife works and she has a different schedule. Let’s say I wake up, have breakfast, start hacking, I take my dogs out for a nice break and then I come back to continue hacking if I am still in the mood. If I am not in the mood or tired, I do something else, usually end up playing rocket league with some friends.
Q: What motivates you to hack?
A: There are quite a few factors here and the combination is what it’s important for me:

The financial winnings

The live events (I have a very competitive nature)

In the end, I really love spending my time hacking and I enjoy trying to break other people’s work to make it better for the future for everybody

Q: Do you have a favorite industry/company you concentrate on?
A: Yes, I have a favorite program, a private one that usually eats about 70-80% of my time. Basically, if I am not going to a live hacking event I usually hack there. I really like very deep apps where you can learn from failures and from everything you do or read. When the pieces of the puzzle start coming together it’s very enjoyable and fulfilling.
Q: What’s been your biggest win in bug bounty to date?
A: My favorite program had a 4x promo for criticals for just 24 hours with another 48 hours notice beforehand and I was in the middle of a breakthrough and research I was already doing for the last week. It was very lucky and I had managed to get 3 criticals in, gaining 3 x $28k
Q: Which project has presented you with your greatest challenge so far?
A: Very hard to say as each project is unique, has its own specific challenges and it’s shifting very often. I have various projects that I cannot make myself stick to, start or finish them. So with the risk of sounding extremely broad, those are the ones that are the most challenging, the ones that you cannot even start.
Q: In your opinion, which industry is a particularly interesting target for hackers and why?
A: Industries that handle PII and financial institutions. In my opinion, those 2 are the critical parts in the online industry that has to be as secure as possible.
Q: What do you spend your bounty money on?
A: This is my daily job, we spend it on everything we want. We do not have any exquisite hobbies or anything that eats a big chunk of the money we have
Q: What do you think is the biggest online risk facing businesses and ordinary people?
A: In my opinion identity theft is the biggest risk. Almost there is also the risk of losing your life savings or money. When one of those things happens, in order to “fix it”, if possible, you will need to spend incredible amounts of energy and time that will definitely affect you financially, mentally and physically.
Q: Do you think businesses are becoming more open to hacker-powered security?
A: Definitely, businesses both big and small seem to be a lot more open to hacker-powered security and start seeing its advantages. They are also more willing to invest more time and money into them in order to attract more experienced hackers and gain the maximum from it.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring ethical hackers?
A: First, to realize that this takes time, it’s an incredibly steep learning curve! Then, be prepared to invest time into it. If you have those 2 in mind and you go down this path, you will definitely succeed. Read the documentation, learn to write your own tools, read security articles, invest time also in research, learn to write your reports and always approach your target tactically and with the strategy that fits you well. Also, it’s very important to realize that you and your mindset are unique, so don’t follow what X or Y says. Try to grab from everybody little bits, analyze them and then integrate them in your workflow only if it suits you.
