ING Australia snares new CIO from Westpac’s BT Financial Group – Finance – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Westpac’s loss has become ING’s gain, with the Dutch-headquartered direct banking giant appointing Linda Da Silva as its new chief information officer after she jumped following a 12 year stint with Australia’s oldest bank.
Most recently CIO of BT Financial Group, the appointment came as Westpac announced the appointment of former ANZ chief executive and Barclays chairman John MacFarlane as its new chairman as the bank continues casting for a new head in the wake of the AUSTRAC debacle.
Da Silva’s appointment as technology lead at ING comes at a pivotal time for the pioneer of online-only banking in Australia, with the start of the open banking regime slated to start later this year, opening the way for customers to more openly contest and migrate accounts and loans.
ING has over the last decade carved out a more than respectable slice of the mortgage market by offering fast turnaround times on mortgage applications coupled with highly competitive rates to snare online savvy customers frustrated with more clunky experiences at the big four.
Da Silva takes over from ING Australia’s previous CIO Ani Paul who has now become ING’s global chief data officer based in Amsterdam.
Global banks with strong digital presence and execution in the Australian market are highly appealing as a career move for tech chiefs in the business lines of main street banks because they offer the opportunity to take on wider and more senior roles internationally without changing brands.
ING Australia’s chief executive Uday Sareen said Da Silva’s appointment coincided with the business growing strongly and scaling its digital capability across products and services.
“She has the experience and skills to help accelerate our digital transformation and further differentiate our offering to customers,” Sareen said.

Service NSW loses digital chief to Queensland government – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Queensland government has poached Service NSW’s digital chief Chris Fechner as the state’s first-ever chief digital and customer officer.
iTnews can reveal Fechner will make the jump to Queensland’s Department of Housing and Public Works (HPW) in early February after just nine months at Service NSW.
He is the second chief digital and product officer to leave NSW’s central service delivery agency in just over a year, following in the footsteps of former digital chief Ian Jansen.
The appointment comes four months after HPW went looking for a digital chief to spearhead Queensland’s efforts to become a leader in digital transformation.
HPW last year acknowledged that the state’s digital transformation efforts had not kept pace with other Australian states, particularly NSW and Victoria, and risked falling further behind.
Fechner, who will sit alongside the government’s current chief information officer Andrew Mills, will be tasked with leading the development of customer-focused government online services.
He will also improve confidence in the government’s digital systems, which will involve strengthening the government’s current approach to IT investment, governance and assurance.
Prior to joining Service NSW in April 2019, Fechner spent six years as CIO at both NSW’s Department of Planning and Environment and former Office of Environment and Heritage.
He also spent just over two years as CIO at Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.
In a message to HPW staff yesterday, director-general Liza Carrol said Fechner had gained “wealth of experience” from his time working in both the NSW and Queensland governments.
“Chris comes to us with a wealth of experience as a senior executive in both the Queensland and NSW Public Service, which includes his most current role of chief digital and product officer, Service NSW,” she said.
“As the chief digital and product officer, Chris was responsible for the digital customer experience across physical service centres, telephone contact centres and all digital channels for citizen experiences with the NSW Government, overseeing the recently implemented digital driver Licence and the NSW Cost of Living Reduction Program.
“I look forward to Chris joining us in early February to take on this vitally important role for the Department.”
Fechner will lead the Queensland government’s customer and digital group, which was established as a new division within HPW last year.
More to come…

Config flub by Microsoft exposed millions of customer details – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Microsoft has acknowledged that it left hundreds of millions of customer support records exposed for most of December last year, having failed to apply appropriate security controls for a database.
Security vendor Comparitech researcher Bob Diachenko found the open database, which had been left exposed from December 5 to December 31 United States time, when Microsoft engineers secured it.
Diachenko said he found a set of five unsecured Elasticsearch databases on December 7.
Each stored an identical database that contains nearly 250 million customer service and support records.
The data could be accessed by anyone with a web browser, no password or other authentication required.
Apart from email and internet protocol address, the records contained case numbers and logs of conversations between Microsoft support agents and customers worldwide, from 2005 to December last year.
Diachenko believes the data was only exposed for two days until he reported the leak to Microsoft.
While Microsoft said there is no evidence of malicious access to what it says is an internal database, it was indexed by information storage security company BinaryEdge.
Comparitech suggested that the data could have been valuable to tech support scammers impersonating Microsoft, to defraud customers.
Microsoft thanked Diachenko, and said it wanted to be transparent with customers and reassure them that it is taking the incident very seriously and holding themselves accountable.
“Misconfigurations are unfortunately a common error across the industry.
We have solutions to help prevent this kind of mistake, but unfortunately, they were not enabled for this database.
As we’ve learned, it is good to periodically review your own configurations and ensure you are taking advantage of all protections available,” Microsoft top infosec executives Ann Johnson and Eric Doerr wrote in the company’s mea culpa.
No personally indentifiable information was exposed, Microsoft said.
Microsoft’s standard operating procedures automatically remove personal information in support case analytics databases, but in some cases this had not worked.
If customer data was entered in a non-standard format, such as email addresses with spaces, they may have been left un-redacted, Microsoft said.
The company has started notifying customers whose details were in the exposed database, and tightened up security procedures to prevent future leaks.

Trump tweets his way to a record on impeachment day | US news- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Donald Trump tweeted his way to a record on Wednesday.
The extremely-online US president tweeted 131 times between 12 am EST and 4:46 pm EST, according to Factbase, a platform that tracks data about Trump. That number includes 36 original tweets and 110 retweets, making the day his most active on the account since he became president.
The social media rampage came as Trump traveled back to the US from Davos in Switzerland, and as the US Senate was weighing his impeachment for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Trump has been an avid Twitter user throughout his presidency, infamously tweeting out typos like “covfefe”, sharing a quote from dictator Benito Mussolini that had been attributed to Trump himself, and reportedly firing former secretary of state Rex Tillerson by tweet.

Most of Trump’s retweets on Wednesday included arguments in his defense in the ongoing impeachment trial. One retweet of the House Republicans stated that House Democrats working to impeach Trump “don’t have the evidence” and “don’t have the facts”. Others touted his successes as president. One from congressman Ron Wright stated that Trump had added 145,000 new jobs in December and 2.1m jobs in 2019.

“Not the Senate’s job to mop up the mess made in the House by the Democrats. Biden admitted that he went to Ukraine and did the Quid Pro Quo.” @SteveScalise @FoxNews

Trump also sent out commentary quoted from Fox News regarding the trial and commented on the 2020 election, saying it is “rigged” against candidate Bernie Sanders. In one tweet he called candidate Tom Steyer “a major loser”. He retweeted another calling New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a “barely literate moron”.
Despite breaking his own record on Wednesday, Trump did not tweet as frequently as he has in the past. His record for most tweets per hour was set from 7-8 am EST on 12 December 2019 at 58 tweets – or one tweet every 62 seconds. The Davos Twitter storm seen today represented just one tweet per 88 seconds, according to Factbase.
As of 6 pm EST, Trump is continuing to tweet and is approaching his all-time record of 161 tweets, set in 2015 before he was president.

Sonos customers up in arms over move to stop updates for older speakers – Cloud – Hardware – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sonos Inc is facing a social media firestorm after the wireless speaker pioneer decided to stop software updates for some of its older products.
Hours after the company made the announcement on Tuesday, customers went on Twitter using the trending hashtag #SonosBoycott and tagging the company’s chief executive officer, Patrick Spence, with their questions.
“@Patrick_Spence would you like to buy my 3 yr old @Sonos equipment? I guess you know how to use it as a doorstop soon,” one Twitter user, @itnopred, asked the CEO.
Customers received an email from Sonos saying the company would no longer support some models launched between 2006 and 2009 after May.
Sonos gave customers the option to either continue using the products without any new updates and features in the future or buy a new Sonos product with a 30% credit for each product replaced.
“Is this some kind of sick joke? … How to kill a brand 101. Your discount is a joke,” @Ben_Willee tweeted.
Spence has not personally responded to Twitter users, but the Sonos support team has been replying to irate customers.
“As this is the first time we’ve had to end software updates for any music player, we recognize this is new for Sonos owners, just as it is for Sonos,” a Sonos spokesman said in a statement.
“We’ve now come to the point where our oldest products have been stretched to their technical limits in terms of memory and processing power.”
Sonos’ speakers and the company’s tie-ups with around 100 music streaming providers, including Apple Music and Spotify, have attracted audiophiles around the world. The company, founded in 2002, listed on the stock exchange in 2018.
But as Amazon Inc’s Echo, Google’s Home and Apple’s HomePod entered the market, the Santa Barbara, California-based company faced pressure over pricing and the variety of its products.
“This is nothing more than a big rip off by a company that just went public … I will never purchase their products again. I hope they go bankrupt,” Facebook user Stephen Salay posted in a private group for Sonos users.
Many customers also highlighted the environmental aspect of the move at a time when people are buying more and more devices and then abandoning them quickly, increasing landfill waste.
Shares of the company were down 1.2 percent at US$14.62 in early trading on Wednesday.

The Best Places To Find Audiobooks For Free – Blog – 10 minute

These days, audiobooks are on the rise, as more and more people look to find ways to spice up an hour-long commute into work or school. It’s also how you can liven up and add some entertainment to mundane boring tasks such as washing the dishes or rearranging your clothes shelves.
If you’d rather not pay for your audiobooks though, and you don’t mind not having the latest bestsellers, here are some sources where you can get audiobooks for free.

Librivox is an example of crowdsourcing on the internet, where volunteers read chapters of an audiobook with the aim of getting it online. These generous people take the initiative of reading chapters from short stories, fairy tales, and other kinds of books.
Anyone can download these thousands of audiobooks for free, and anyone can volunteer their time to read another one for the site.

Due to the fact that many people are reading these novels, be aware that quality can vary from one person to the next. But for visually impaired people or disabled people, a service like this can be a lifesaver. You never know who is going to be reading the next chapter.
No list would be complete without the inclusion of Google Play Books, but saying that, there is no dedicated “free” section on the site. In fact, being a business, Google puts more emphasis on the paid offerings.

There is however an audiobook section, and Google often gives away free books now and then as a special offer. It’s worth keeping the site bookmarked and check it on a regular basis to see if Google are running any special promotions.
DigitalBook claims to have over 100,000 titles in their collection, but an initial inspection seems to suggest that they are merely indexing Librivox’s collection.

You can listen to audiobooks without a membership. But a free membership will enable you to save all the audiobooks you want, place them on a bookshelf, and return to read them again in the future.
Did you know that you can borrow audiobooks for free from your local library? Not many people do, and Libby wants to make it easier to find and check out those audiobooks.

Operated by the library distribution service, Overdrive, Libby serves as your manager of audiobooks and with it, you can borrow audiobooks from all the libraries you are subscribed to.
After downloading its app to your phone, you can then listen to any audiobook available in your local library. This includes classics, bestsellers, and new releases.
Best known for the Wayback machine, the Internet Archive serves as a repository for everything online. It is also trying to save and preserve our culture. Part of that are audiobooks.

By searching in the archive’s search engine, you can find all kinds of audiobooks (likely millions of them). But be careful because some of them may still be in copyright in your country. Download with extreme caution. For example, I found an Orson Scott Card book which is most likely still in copyright.
The Internet Archive is updated on a regular basis, so this is another one to bookmark and check back on often.
Like LibriVox, this is a volunteer-run repository. Project Gutenberg came to life in 1971 and has been in existence ever since. It aims to digitize cultural works to fuel the distribution of e-books.
If you think Project Gutenberg is all about e-books, you’ve got another thing coming. The repository also features a large collection of human-read audiobooks for free, taken from the public domain (such as Librivox).

Since you get a 30-day free trial, you can find plenty of audiobooks without paying a dime on Audible. With a reputation as one of the big guns in supplying new audiobooks on the internet, you’ll be in a good spot.
The monthly fee for an eventual subscription is $14.95. Compared to a free pass, that seems a lot. But if you consider the unlimited power you have to access all the audiobooks you want, you might think otherwise.
More than 100,000 audiobooks for free are yours for the taking at Audiobooks. The catch is that you can take home only some of them for free.

Like Audible, it charges you $14.95 per month if you sign up for its service. If you want to test the waters first before diving in, then its one-month free trial is perfect for you to get some audiobooks for free.
What sets this apart are the voices of trained actors who narrate the original stories in the items you can find here. When you check out what’s in store for you on the site, it’s as if you’re tuning in to more than just an audiobook. Instead, it’s like you’re in the middle of a radio drama.

Do you have Spotify installed on your iPad, iPhone, or Android gadget? If so, you have a ticket to easily check out audiobooks. Just search for a title you like, or an author or genre.
Spotify is mostly around to provide music, so you can’t rely on it having as many titles as the rest of the entries in this list. But if you’re already an existing Spotify user, finding and downloading audiobooks for free is made easy for you.

Google CEO eyes major opportunity in healthcare, says will protect privacy – Benchmarking Change- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet Inc and its Google subsidiary, said on Wednesday that healthcare offers the biggest potential over the next five to 10 years for using artificial intelligence to improve outcomes, and vowed that the technology giant will heed privacy concerns.
US lawmakers have raised questions about Google’s access to the health records of tens of millions of Americans. Ascension, which operates 150 hospitals and more than 50 senior living facilities across the United States, is Google’s biggest cloud computing customer in healthcare.
“When we work with hospitals, the data belongs to the hospitals,” Pichai told a conference panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“But look at the potential here. Cancer if often missed and the difference in outcome is profound. In lung cancer, for example, five experts agree this way and five agree the other way. We know we can use artificial intelligence to make it better,” Pichai added.
Google has spent several years developing artificial intelligence to automatically analyse MRI scans and other patient data to identify diseases and make predictions aimed at improving outcomes and reducing cost.
The US lawmakers asked the company in November to provide information about other health systems that provide information to Google, whether Ascension clients will be allowed to opt out of the project, and whether the data be used for advertising.
Pichai said there was already strong privacy protecting regulations in place that provide a framework for Google to operate.
Google clinched a deal in November to acquire Fitbit Inc for US$2.1 billion, aiming to enter the wearables segment and invest in digital health. The acquisition is expected to be scrutinized closely by regulators before it is allowed to close.

‘Click I agree’: UN rapporteur says prince tried to intimidate Bezos with text | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

The message, it seems, could not have been clearer.
On 8 November 2018, just one month after the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi, Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, received an unsolicited text from Mohammed bin Salman’s WhatsApp account.
According to the UN, the text from the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, contained a single photograph that bore a striking similarity to the woman with whom the married billionaire was having a secret affair. It also contained what appeared to be a sardonic message.
It read: “Arguing with a woman is like reading the Software Licence Agreement. In the end you have to ignore everything and click I agree.”

For Agnes Callamard, the UN special rapporteur who is investigating the murder of Khashoggi, it seemed the message was evidence of an attempt by the future king, also known as MBS, to “intimidate” Bezos.
She told the Guardian it appeared intended to make him feel vulnerable, even as his own newspaper, the Washington Post, continued to publish hard-hitting stories about the murder of one of its own journalists.
The new UN revelations, which follow the Guardian’s report that Bezos’s phone was allegedly hacked by Saudi Arabia in the months before the Khashoggi killing, point to an orchestrated cyber campaign to target Bezos, and the close circle of individuals around Khashoggi.
Callamard said: “This shows that during this period, there is a concerted effort to hack into the system of people who are considered as a threat somehow to MBS or to the government system of Saudi Arabia. That does not mean it is aimed at picking up particular information. It is done to use that information in the future.”
According to a timeline provided by the UN, the story began on 21 March 2018, when Bezos was invited to a small dinner party in honour of the crown prince.
A fortnight later – on 4 April – the two men exchanged phone numbers at a dinner whose guest list included former basketball player Kobe Bryant and the Disney chief executive, Bob Iger.

And a month after that, on 1 May, Bezos received “a message from the crown prince account … through WhatsApp,” the UN explained.
“The message is an encrypted video file. It is later established, with reasonable certainty, that the video’s downloader infects Mr Bezos’ phone with malicious code.”
This rapidly infected his phone – and a huge exfiltration of data began.
That was the conclusion of a report undertaken for Bezos by FTI Consulting, an advisory firm, whose findings were passed to Callamard, and another UN special rapporteur, David Kaye.
The Guardian has seen this report.
If the analysis is correct, the crown prince’s close circle had obtained the contents of the mobile phone of one of the world’s most powerful businesspeople .
Bezos – like hundreds of other victims – would have had no reason to know he had been hacked.
In the days and weeks that followed, Bezos – who was married at the time – sent private text messages to his girlfriend, describing his romantic feelings.
Those texts would later be published in the Tempemail Enquirer, although the exact circumstances around their publication have yet to be determined.
What is known is that the crown prince had twice met with the owner of the Tempemail Enquirer, David Pecker, who was known in Hollywood and Washington as a man who had ties to Donald Trump, and had a history of solving problems for the US president, including “killing” negative stories about Trump and his extramarital affairs.
New information published by Callamard and Kaye, the UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression, suggest that the alleged targeting of Bezos was just the beginning of a broader campaign to pick off individuals who were close to Khashoggi and in frequent contact with the journalist.
The timeline published by the investigators on Wednesday refers to four other prominent Saudi critics who were targeted with malware in the weeks that followed: Yahya Assiri and Omar Abdulaziz, who were in frequent contact with Khashoggi, the London-based satirist Ghanem al-Dosari, and an Amnesty International official who was working in Saudi Arabia.
On 2 October, Khashoggi entered the Saudi embassy in Istanbul and was killed. US intelligence agencies and Callamard’s own report would later allege that Bin Salman bore responsibility for the killing.
Shortly thereafter, the investigators said there had been a “massive online campaign” against Bezos and Amazon in Saudi Arabia, principally targeting him as the owner of the Washington Post.
Then, in January last year, the Tempemail Enquirer published an exposé of Bezos’s extramarital affair, including text messages that were sent after the billionaire’s phone was allegedly hacked by the Saudis.
American Media Inc, owner of the Tempemail Enquirer, has denied that any “third party” was involved in it obtaining information about Bezos, and has insisted that it received its tip-off from the estranged brother of Bezos’s girlfriend. But the brother, Michael Sanchez, publicly stated last year that the Enquirer was already aware of the illicit relationship when he was first contacted by the tabloid in July 2018 and had already “seen” text messages between the couple.
While experts contend that Bin Salman may have been seeking to silence Bezos, the Amazon CEO publicly accused AMI of trying to “extort and blackmail” him, after the company suggested that it would agree to not publish compromising photographs of the billionaire if he agreed to shutdown his investigation into the leaked texts. Bezos flatly denied the apparent deal.

The FTI Consulting report says that Bezos obtained a detailed briefing about the extent of the Saudi campaign against him on 14 February. It was provided over two separate phone calls.
Yet two days later, according to the FTI report, the crown prince sent another message to Bezos, claiming “what you hear or told it’s not true and it’s matter of time tell [sic] you know the truth”.
UN investigators say the online campaign against Bezos ended on 1 April.
At about that time, the Guardian reported that Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, had privately urged the crown prince to cut his ties to a close adviser, Saud al-Qahtani, who had been known as a key architect of Saudi Arabia’s cyber warfare and Twitter campaigns.
The Saudi embassy in Washington declined to respond to the Guardian’s questions. But in a tweet, the Saudi government called allegations that the crown prince was involved in the hacking of Bezos “absurd”.
“We call for an investigation on these claims so that we can have all the facts out,” it said.
AMI said it had no further comment.
Saudi Arabia has insisted the crown prince had nothing to do with the murder of Khashoggi. It has also denied using surveillance technology against critics of the kingdom.
But, on Wednesday night, as the story continued to grow, Bezos remembered the journalist in a tweet.

European court: Nintendo doesn’t have to offer refunds for digital pre-orders – Blog – 10 minute

In context: Nintendo has been on a hot streak in the legal arena lately. Just yesterday, the company managed to convince a federal court to overturn a previous ruling that would have forced it to pay out roughly $10 million as part of a prior patent dispute judgement. Now, a European court has ruled in the video game giant’s favor as well.
For roughly two years, according to Norwegian gaming site PressFire, Nintendo has been locked in a legal dispute (Google Translated version here) with Norwegian and German “consumer authorities” regarding digital game refunds.
Specifically, refunds for digital game pre-orders. Right now, Nintendo does not allow customers to cancel orders for digital games that have not been launched.
“Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Shopping Services (including pre-purchases and Subscription payments) are final and non refundable, and Products may not be returned or exchanged,” Nintendo’s official “Purchase and Subscription Terms” documentation reads.

Like many business practices of Nintendo’s, this refund policy is quite different than that of many others. Even some of the most controversial figures in the gaming industry (we won’t point fingers here) offer full refunds on digital pre-orders.
At any rate, the consumer authorities mentioned before sued Nintendo in the hopes of forcing the company to change its ways. Unfortunately for them and any consumers who felt their cause was just, that suit has failed.
Not only will Nintendo be allowed to retain its current digital pre-order policies, but the plaintiffs will be required to pay the company’s legal fees (standard practice for cases of this magnitude). The plaintiffs have appealed the court’s decision, but it remains to be seen whether or not that will work out.

Insurers look to curb ransomware exposure as US cyber premiums rise – Benchmarking Change- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

US insurers are ramping up cyber-insurance rates by as much as 25 percent and trying to curb exposure to vulnerable customers after a surge of costly claims, industry sources said.
The changes follow a challenging year of hackers using malicious programs, known as ransomware, to take down systems that control everything from hospital billing to manufacturing. They stop only after receiving increasingly hefty payments.
The attacks happened less frequently in 2019, but the problem remains significant, cybersecurity experts said.
“Ransomware is more sophisticated and dangerous than we saw in the past,” said Adam Kujawa, director of Malwarebytes Labs.
There were 6 percent fewer ransomware incidents in 2019 versus the prior year, according to Malwarebytes. However, attacks are now designed to spur deeper and more lasting technological problems, with hackers demanding bigger sums.
The average ransom of US$41,198 during the 2019 third quarter more than tripled from the first quarter, according to Coveware, which helps negotiate and facilitate the payments.
Ransoms are becoming disproportionate to the size of targets, said Kelly Castriotta, Allianz SE North American head of product development for financial lines. Hackers frequently pursue mid-size companies and other organizations that are less technologically adept, but also have less revenue to cover big ransoms.
“You’d expect a ransomware demand that you can pay,” Castriotta said.
The U.S. rate increases underscore broader global ransomware problems from which no company is immune.
Ransomware recently crippled foreign-exchange firm Travelex Ltd’s systems for weeks, leaving staff to serve customers with pens and paper. Hackers demanded US$6 million, the BBC reported. Travelex declined to comment.
Another attack in December paralyzed the Albany County Airport Authority’s administrative computers. It had to pay US$98,705.96 in Bitcoin to get the system unlocked, a spokesman told Reuters. Its insurer, Chubb Ltd, covered the ransom, he said. Chubb declined to comment.
Cyber-insurance premiums started rising 5 percent to 25 percent late last year, said Robert Parisi, U.S. cyber product leader at Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc.
He called the increases “dramatic” but said insurers have not scaled back coverage.
Cyber policies often cover not just ransom, but data recovery, legal liabilities and negotiators fluent in hackers’ native languages. Some insurers are considering changes, given the rising costs.
Allianz is looking into price adjustments and whether ransomware should be a separate product from general cyber coverage, Castriotta said.
Zurich Insurance Group AG is more likely to underwrite firms that have added network features to prevent attacks from spreading through systems, said its chief risk officer, Peter Giger.
Sompo International is reviewing criteria for businesses that have been most vulnerable to ransomware, said Brad Gow, global cyber product leader.
Insurers including Sompo may also lower amounts they pay for ransomware attacks against higher-risk companies or shift to coinsurance, in which policyholders would pay 20 percent to 30 percent of ransomware claims, Gow said. They might also require those policyholders to have data-backup procedures.
Gow compared potential changes to requiring airbags or sprinkler systems.
“We can drive a win-win by helping our clients become better protected,” he said.
