Google Shows that Kenyans Are Starting to Go Back to Work | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from The African Report.

In April, Kenyans were almost always at home after the COVID-19 crisis hit the country, and the nationwide lockdown was initiated. This is according to a report from Google which noted a significant decrease in the number of people visiting workplaces, parks and recreational areas. Now, a similar report from Google is showing that Kenyans have started to steadily return to work.
Kenyans have been under lockdown for the last few months, with a recent extension of another 30 days added to keep coronavirus infection levels low. Now, thanks to Google’s smartphone tracking software, we can see that a lot more Kenyans are up and about.
These reports show how visits and length of stay at different places change compared to a baseline. According to the report, Kenyans are now going back to work. Here’s what the movement looked like in March.
Sourced from Gadgets Africa.
There was a significant drop in movement across the country. Transit stations recorded a -39% drop and workplaces a -22% drop. The focus was also on the increase of people who were now staying at home.

Sourced from Gadgets Africa.
In June there was a significant increase. The above is a sample of movement on 7 June. Note the large increase for mobility trends for places of work.

Mobility trends for 12 June show further increases in places of residence and in public transport but a large decrease in the movement for places of work. This may be because of the new extension placed on the country’s lockdown. There is an overall increase, however, of people going to work since March.
The same kind of increase is seen where people are visiting more restaurants and shopping centres. According to Google, things seem to be going back to normal in Kenya. However, in the same period, the country has recorded more cases with over 2427 active cases currently.
Google’s community mobility reports
Anyone can view mobility statistics from their home country via Google’s Community Mobility reports.

Google covers 131 countries. In many locations, users can search for more regional data, examining reports for individual states, provinces, and counties.
Gadgets Africa confirms that Google chose PDFs over web pages because they could be more easily downloaded and shared with workers in the field in order to understand vital statistics in the fight against COVID-19.

US Companies Allowed to Work with Huawei on 5G | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Getty Images.

The US Department of Commerce has ruled that Huawei may work with North American companies to develop standards for 5G and other innovative technologies – this comes after the US banned trade with the Chinese tech giant citing the potential threat of cyber-exploitation.
The new ruling allows Huawei’s “entity listing” – which restricts trade between the US and a foreign organisation deemed as a threat – to be amended so that it can “continue to participate in many important international standards organizations in which U.S. companies also participate.”
Techweez reports that the standards in question “will revolve around Wi-Fi and 5G – the latter of which has grown in China thanks to works done by the nation”.

“As international standards serve as the building blocks for product development and help ensure functionality, interoperability and safety of the products,” states the Department of Commerce, “it is important to US technological leadership that US companies be able to work in these bodies in order to ensure that US standards proposals are fully considered.”
This amendment, which is sure to be welcomed by major players in industry, is said to still protect the US while also “encouraging US industry to fully engage and advocate for U.S. technologies to become international standards”.
“The United States will not cede leadership in global innovation. This action recognizes the importance of harnessing American ingenuity to advance and protect our economic and national security,” notes the Department.

US posts rule allowing US companies to work with Huawei – Networking- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The US Department of Commerce posted a new rule that allows US companies to work with China’s Huawei to develop standards for 5G and other cutting-edge technologies, despite restrictions on doing business with the telecommunications equipment maker.
Reuters reported on Monday that the rule had been approved and sent to the Federal Register.
It is scheduled to be formally published in the register, the official US government journal, on Thursday.
The rule amends the Huawei “entity listing,” which restricts sales of US goods and technology to the company.
The US placed Huawei on the list a year ago, citing national security concerns.
Industry and government officials have said the restrictions backfired in standards settings.
With US companies uncertain what technology or information they could share, they said, Huawei gained a stronger voice.
Huawei and 114 of its foreign affiliates on the Entity List “continue to participate in many important international standards organizations in which US companies also participate,” the new rule says.
“As international standards serve as the building blocks for product development and help ensure functionality, interoperability and safety of the products,” the rule explains, “it is important to US technological leadership that US companies be able to work in these bodies in order to ensure that US standards proposals are fully considered.”
Huawei said in a statement it wants to continue standards discussions with counterparts, including those in the United States.
“Inclusiveness and productive dialogue will better promote the formulation of technical standards and encourage the healthy development of the industry and the global economy,” the company statement said.

Why the Women’s Engineering Society still has its work cut out after 100 years | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

In June 1919, seven women came together in London to do something unprecedented: they founded the world’s first Women’s Engineering Society (WES), which survives to this day.
The creation of WES was precipitated by the end of the first world war. Thousands of women had entered factories and gained practical engineering training, but the 1919 Restoration of Pre-War Practices Act forced women to hand over their jobs to men returninghome. The society’s founding aims were to protect job opportunities for women in engineering and to ensure training and educational prospects were available to make sure women could enter the field.
WES built a strong network of women across the globe who communicated through the WES journal The Woman Engineer, conferences and letters. Photographs from the WES archives show members standing together as a body of women, rather than in individual portraits – a contrast to the standard images of the engineer, such as the 1857 photo by Robert Howlett of Isambard Kingdom Brunel in his top hat, standing by the chains of his machinery.

A 1970s Electrical Association for Women tea towel. Photograph: Courtesy of IET Archives
When they couldn’t find employment in engineering after the war, many women set up their own companies and factories employing only women. One founder member of WES Margaret Partridge set up her own electrical power supply company with partner Margaret Rowbotham and used it as a platform to support women engineers in their careers. Their most successful apprentice, Beatrice Shilling, went on to design and implement a restrictor for warplanes to stop them crashing. She played a crucial, if unsung, role in the second world war effort. Partridge wrote in a gleeful letter that Shilling “is a great acquisition to the firm … She has a wicked joy in making all the YWCA Hostel stand their hair on end by tales of her unladylike exploits with wiring.”
While the focus of WES was on professional engineers, several prominent members decided they needed to widen their ambitions for women, too. The Electrical Association for Women was founded in 1924 to educate any interested female about electricity so they could use and fix the devices now common in the home. They produced a journal and education publications, held frequent demonstrations at their showrooms, and by the 1970s they even sold a set of colourful tea towels showing how to wire a plug, use the right fuse and estimate the energy used by different electrical appliances.
Women were carving a role for themselves as inventors and engineers long before WES was founded. In the 19th century, Sarah Guppy was the first woman to patent a bridge-building method (for Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol) – her son went on to work with Kingdom Brunel. Self-taught engineer Henrietta Vansittart’s design for a screw propeller was used in British naval ships and lauded for its ability to make them travel faster. Engineer, physicist and suffragette Hertha Ayrton was the first woman to be elected a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, in 1899, for her work preventing the flicker and hiss of arc lights (a form of electric lighting used for street illumination). She was also the first woman to be awarded the Hughes medal by the Royal Society.

It was in this context that the seven founders of WES came of age. Mostly they were aristocratic women, who had come to the profession via their engineer husbands, such as Lady Katharine Parsons, wife of Sir Charles Parsons, who is credited with inventing the steam turbine. On closer inspection, she played a vital role in its invention, accompanying her husband on many test runs and managing the family business. In 1919, she gave an impassioned speech to the North East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders about equal opportunities in engineering, stating that women “may also wish to have their economic independence, and freedom to make their way without any artificial restrictions”.
Another founder, Laura Annie Willson , began her working life as a teenager at a textile factory in Halifax. She was a suffragette and was twice arrested before becoming one of the founders of WES. One charge was for making a violent and inflammatory speech, for which she was imprisoned for 14 days. On her release she claimed: “I went to gaol a rebel, but I have come out a regular terror.” She was president of WES for two years and awarded an MBE in 1917 for her services to munitions work during the first world war.
Research is beginning to shed light on the long and varied role women have played in engineering, but the standardised history of the field still celebrates lone male engineers, who are (quite literally in the form of statues) put on pedestals. There is still a lack of gender parity in engineering in the UK, where only 12% of practising engineers are women. After 100 years, WES still has work to do.

The Future of Work in the U.S. and China- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

By Gareth Noyes

Research in China and the U.S. indicate what the future of work could look like—and location matters.
Forecasters might assume that the future of work in industries such as aviation/aerospace, medical equipment manufacturing, automotive manufacturing, and telecommunications will include a post-pandemic return to offices and manufacturing facilities. However, new Tempemail research (conducted mid to late April 2020) into these industries shows that technology leaders in IoT, embedded, security, 5G, and cloud development have a very different set of visions in the U.S. compared to China. U.S. leaders are 30% more likely to see the idea of remote working becoming the norm compared to their peers in China.
More importantly, COVID-19 is radically changing more than just employee work location. U.S. technology leaders are 77% more likely to see an opportunity to realign how teams work, use technologies, and digitally transform ideas for the post–COVID-19 world. At the same time, 40% of these U.S. leaders, compared to just under one in three of their peers in China, see a further chance to reduce OPEX in the near future.
Ad the chart below shows, U.S. leaders will encourage the double-edged swords of increasing the use of technology for teamwork (62%) and remote working (40%). Ideas about reducing ongoing costs mitigate against extending old OPEX models after COVID-19. Technologies such as 5G, the cloud, and AI all become increasingly interesting factors in the attempt to automate functions, increase collaborative speed, improve quality, and inform decision-making.

In critical industries, developing in the cloud and working remotely using dynamic and collaborative platforms will be far more common. Imagine developing complex embedded devices remotely or building new cloud-native applications and digital twins for the edge in a secure and agile way—from home. It might sound surreal, but these could be the new working conditions we will increasingly experience in the next decade, propelled by COVID-19.
Given the power of real-time data in a digital world, we will need to develop more than just new work processes for a post–COVID-19 world. We will also be developing technologies that enable a full and effective level of collaboration across new digital platforms.

From mid to late April 2020, Tempemail® researched beliefs, strategies, and forward projections among technology (embedded, IT, security, and cloud) leaders in five major industries (telecom, aviation, medical industries, automotive, and industrial manufacturing) in China and the USA. Further analysis, the report, and infographics are available at www.Tempemail.com/covid19-industry-impact/.

Services Australia put face matching to work for bushfire relief payments – Strategy – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Australia’s national facial biometrics matching database was put to the test during the catastrophic Black Summer bushfires to verify the identities of people who had their documents destroyed.
The commission into national natural disaster arrangements on Thursday heard biometrics was trialled last summer as a means to help deliver disaster relief payments to displaced individuals.
Services Australia deputy chief Michelle Lees, who is responsible for customer service delivery, said “a face verification service and biometric alignment around proof of identity” was used.
The Department of Home Affairs first revealed the use of the face verification service (FVS) for bushfire relief payments at senate estimates in March.
But it offered little detail on how the service – which first launched during 2016 and now forms a component of the national driver licence facial recognition solution (NDLFRS) – was used.
Lees on Thursday said a simple webcam setup was used to capture the facial images of people who had their documents destroyed, as well as those “who were displaced from their homes”.
“It wasn’t just the loss of documents,” she said
“People had to leave their homes very quickly or they might have been in another location as the event came through, so they didn’t necessarily have those types of documents with them.”
She said the photos were then matched against photos from passports, visas and driver’s licenses contained in the cross-border database, granted citizens provided consent to do so.
“[The matching process] involved, firstly, explaining to the person that was making the claim what the face verification service meant,” she said.
“That meant matching a photograph of their face with the other identification documents.
“There was a webcam where it actually took the image and through a portal matching it up the other existing photographic ID, whether it be passport, visa or driver’s licenses.
“There were a small number of instances where the individuals did not give consent, and so we went through the usual proof of identity mechanism for those individuals.”
Contrary to Home Affairs, Lees also said the service was used outside of Victoria and South Australia – the first two states to upload their driver’s licence photographs to the NDLFRS.
“We attempted to use this service in all of the impacted locations, particularly in early 2020,” she said.
“Whilst we had arrangements in place, specifically … agreement to use driver’s licences in SA and Victoria, we also could match passports and any visas that might have a photograph in other jurisdictions.
“So we did trial the utilisation in a range of states.”
A Services Australia submission to the commission indicates hundred of Australians used the service to confirm their identity.
The agency is now looking at how the technology might be applied in the future, taking into consideration a range of learnings from the trial.
“We continue to look at how we might build out the FVS and biometric identity utilisation more broadly,” Lees said.
“There is work elsewhere within the Commonwealth looking at digital identity, and we will continue to look at how we might best leverage those technologies as they improve.
“There were some learnings about how we could best use the existing FVS through this approach, and we’re implementing changes accordingly.”

Bolt Expects Surge in Demand as South Africa Returns to Work | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

South African ride-hailing platform, Bolt says that demand for its ‘Isolated Car’ service has soared as people across the country look to get to and from work safely.
Bolt’s ‘Isolated Car’ service – which was first launched in March 2020 – includes physical protection measures installed between the front and rear seats of the vehicles. It is also currently the only ride-hailing service to offer this extra protection.

“Vehicles have a protective barrier installed between the front and back seats, providing a physical shield between the driver and their passenger, limiting the airflow between the drivers and riders inside the cars,” explains Gareth Taylor, country manager for Bolt South Africa.

In addition, it is mandatory for drivers and passengers to wear face masks, passengers must sanitize their hands on entering the vehicle and drivers are required to ventilate and sanitise the car between every trip.
This category costs the same as a regular Bolt ride despite the extra safety measures and limits on passenger numbers.
In order to meet escalating passenger demand for these vehicles, Bolt boosted the number vehicles registered on the platform that have these protection measures to 3,000 and expanded the service offering beyond Johannesburg to Cape Town and Durban.
“We anticipate that Bolt Isolated Cars are likely to be even more popular under Level 3 as COVID-19 lockdown conditions relax and more South Africans are able to return to work – many of them concerned about using public transport due to social distancing fears,” says Taylor.
Because of this expected demand, Bolt has announced plans to double the number of vehicles by subsidising the installation of the protection measures in a further 4,000 vehicles registered on the platform.
Taylor said he anticipates continued demand specifically from healthcare, laboratory and other essential services workers but also from workers in sectors that can start work again under Level 3, and they or their employers do not want to or cannot use public transport.
Under Level 3 regulations, for example, employers of non-live-in domestic staff might want to provide private transport for their workers for their safety should they wish them to return to their duties.
Taylor said he expected that employers who need their workers to get to work by means other than public transport will subsidise the ride-hailing fares, or they can set up post-paid accounts on the Bolt Business platform, where they can allocate budgets, record trips, and manage expense claims easily.
“Bolt has responded quickly throughout the lockdown period to create solutions that have helped essential services workers get to work safely, while also ensuring that drivers using the platform continue to earn an income,” Taylor says.

Emerging from Digital Shock: Citrix Survey Shows IT Leaders Preparing for New Work Order- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
The coronavirus has challenged IT organizations around the world in ways unimaginable. But new research conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Citrix Systems, Inc., shows they are rising to the occasion, accelerating their digital transformation efforts to accommodate more flexible ways of working they say employees will demand even after the pandemic subsides. Over three-quarters of more than 3,700 IT leaders in seven countries surveyed believe a majority of workers will be reluctant to return to the office as it was. And 62 percent say they are expediting their move to the cloud as a result.
Testing their Mettle
“COVID-19 has put already stressed IT teams to the test as mandates designed to slow the spread of the virus have forced them to deliver digital work environments with unprecedented speed,” said Meerah Rajavel, Chief Information Officer, Citrix. “But as the results of our latest research reveal, they have responded and are stepping up their efforts to accommodate flexible models that will drive work for the foreseeable future.”
Flexing their Muscle
Over two-thirds of the IT decision makers polled by Censuswide (69 percent) say that it has been surprisingly easy for the majority of their employees to work from home, and 71 percent say that the technology they have put in place has enabled them to collaborate just as effectively as they can face-to-face. In light of this, they are revving up their digital engines and implementing solutions to support remote work for the long haul.

62 percent of IT leaders say their departments are considering downsizing physical IT infrastructure and transitioning to a cloud model
42 percent anticipate introducing digital workspace platforms
44 percent are looking to public cloud services to facilitate long-term remote working

A Rough Road
The road to widespread remote work has not been easy. Almost half (48 percent) of the IT leaders who participated in the Censuswide survey say their organizations did not have a business continuity plan based on the vast majority of employees working from home, and 61 percent found it challenging* to make the switch.
In addition, the fast and widespread adoption of remote work has opened a new set of concerns and challenges with which they must deal:

70 percent of IT leaders are worried about information security as a result of employees working-from-home
54 percent say there’s been a spike in employees installing unsanctioned software.
23 percent say that unscheduled virtual personal network (VPN) shutdowns have been a key problem for their department over the last few weeks.

Taking a Toll
All of this has taken a toll on IT teams, with over three-quarters (77 percent) reporting high stress levels. But there is a silver lining.
“This crisis has thrust IT teams – often the ‘unsung heroes’ of a business – into the limelight like never before,” Rajavel said. “They have worked to deliver secure, reliable work environments that are keeping employees engaged and productive and business moving in extremely challenging times. And in doing so, they will emerge from the crisis more strategic and valued by their organizations than they were going in.”
More than three-quarters of the IT leaders polled (77 percent) share this sentiment and say that IT is currently seen as “business critical to their organization,” while 55 percent believe that their new job title should be “working from home warrior” or “corporate savior.”

The Future of Work – Becoming a Digital Workforce | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from HCAMag.com

The future of work has always been a popular topic for discussion, especially among HR and payroll practitioners. However, the current COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdown many countries have experienced are fast-tracking discussions towards more practical interventions to prepare the workforce for what will be the new normal.
“Even though many aspects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the digitalisation of workforces have been theoretical, the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic has forced management to rethink their approaches to employees and how they use technology to not only improve productivity but reinvent traditional processes,” says Ian McAlister, GM at CRS Technologies.
More than just technology
Consider artificial intelligence (AI), for example. Globally, 37% of companies have deployed AI solutions – up 270% from four years ago – and with spending on AI only expected to continue growing, some are concerned that this will result in significant job losses.

While it will make certain job roles redundant, McAlister believes it also presents an opportunity to reskill and upskill employees to be better prepared for a digitally-driven work environment. “While AI will see many subtle and not so subtle changes to job roles and skills over the coming years, throughout this the people element will remain critically important.
“Even with all the technological advances that 4IR will deliver, humans will continue to be the fundamental element to ensure its success. Just as with the industrial revolution and even the advent of the Internet, people will be repurposed to deliver on new roles and responsibilities, better reflective of the modern organisation. Automation will empower these workers to deliver more strategic value by taking care of much of the menial administration-intensive components of their daily responsibilities.”
Far from resulting in a massive job cull, the arrival of the ‘robots’ in recent times have not taken work away from people. The world’s unemployment rate last year was 5.4% and has remained between 5% and 6% for the last decade and a half. Consequently, it appears that it is not a lack of work that is the problem, but how employees leverage technology to improve the bottom-line that needs to be refined.
People-centric
“No technology will work successfully without human involvement,” McAlister continues. “Machine-learning delivers an element of automation, but it is still ultimately guided by the insights and experiences of people. Even if there is massive disruption at hand due to the current global crisis and the influx of 4IR technologies, this will likely contribute to an increasing reliance on team-based structures, increasingly virtual workplaces that are geographically agnostic, and the diversity of skills previously unimaginable.”
The lockdown has illustrated how many job functions can still be performed while working remotely. Virtual meetings and online group collaborations have become standard business practice. The resultant flexible work environment will likely continue even post-lockdown with many companies looking at implementing such policies in more direct ways.
“This could have a massive impact on office space, with organisations able to reduce their leases by moving into smaller buildings that cater to workers who have to be on site. A rotation system can also be implemented where employees work at hot desks and swop out with others who might be operating remotely. The spin-off from this could be the introduction of fibre access allowances to employees, given the money the business is saving on rent.”
“With traditional career paths changing so rapidly across the entry-level all the way through to middle management, companies must become more adaptable to this fast-moving environment,” McAlister concludes. “The future of the workforce and even the workplace might be guided by 4IR innovation, but it will still be informed by human experiences and the value individuals bring to the business from an experiential perspective.”

5G fires: Australian mobile companies work with police to prevent arson attacks | 5G – Blog – 10 minute

Australian mobile companies are seeking to head off any outbreak of anti-5G arson attacks on telecommunications infrastructure, stating they are working with police to keep an eye out for potential incidents.
Victoria police announced on Friday an investigation had commenced into a fire at a telecommunications tower at Cranbourne West in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
Police were assessing whether the fire was suspicious. As of Tuesday, Victoria police told Guardian Australia the investigation was still ongoing and the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
It followed another suspicious fire at a telecommunications tower in Morphett Vale in South Australia earlier this month, and an incident in Kyabram in northern Victoria where two Chinese flags and a Nazi flag with “#Covid19” were tied to a telecommunications tower.
More than a dozen towers in New Zealand have been vandalised since the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, and more than 20 towers have been vandalised in the UK, also believed to be connected to Covid-19 conspiracy theories connected to 5G.
In response to potential vandalism in Australia similar to that seen in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, the communications minister, Paul Fletcher, last week issued a statement reminding the public that spreading misinformation about 5G is dangerous, and attacking mobile towers is a crime.
“Interfering or tampering with telecommunications facilities is a criminal offence,” Fletcher said. “The Australian government will not tolerate any vandalism of communications infrastructure and I urge Australians to report any suspicious activity to their local police.
“Causing damage to mobile phone networks can cut vital connectivity, risking serious harm, even death, if a person is unable to contact Triple Zero.”
About 70% of all calls to Triple Zero happen via mobile phones and telcos have indicated one major concern about tower vandalism is if a tower is taken offline and people can’t make a phone call in an emergency.
The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association chief executive, Chris Althaus, told Guardian Australia that the mobile companies were not going to let the small minority of people who are spreading misinformation about 5G do enough damage to result in more towers being under threat.
“We’re not going to sit back. No one is going to cop it,” he said. “Frankly it’s disgusting to have the use of this genuine health pandemic for furthering an agenda against a technology that has proven to be safe.”
Althaus said telecommunications companies were partnering with law enforcement in the states and territories to keep on high alert for potential vandalism of telecommunications equipment in response to misinformation about 5G.
“This is critical infrastructure,” he said.
Anti-5G sentiment in Australia, fuelled by misinformation spread on social networks such as Facebook, has “shaken community confidence” in the technology before the vast majority of the public has even used a 5G-enabled device, a parliamentary committee reported earlier this month.
The federal government is spending $9m on an advertising campaign aimed at correcting misinformation.
Facebook has banned content linking coronavirus to 5G directly, and posts encouraging vandalism of telecommunications towers.
However, in many of the anti-5G groups, while posts may not directly link 5G to coronavirus, many have expressed concern that 5G services have been installed while the country is in tight Covid-19 restrictions – unaware or ignoring the fact that telecommunications companies plan their network construction months and years in advance.
One of the biggest groups, which has just under 50,000 members, Australians for Safer Technology, recently changed its name from “Stop 5G Australia” in a move to prevent it being deleted by Facebook as some have been in the UK. The group also has rules about not linking to content connecting 5G to coronavirus, and posts condoning violence or vandalism of 5G equipment.
One of the groups that participated in anti-lockdown and anti-5G protests in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this month have planned another national protest this weekend, however they have not been setting up events on Facebook because Facebook has had a policy of deleting events that encourage people to breach public health restrictions.
