With the coronavirus outbreak that had China as its epicenter has taken a heavy toll on the tech industry. As of now, in an investor update, Apple said that its projected revenue for Q2 is likely to take a hit. This is majorly beacuse the manufacturing sites slowly regain pace over time. Now, Windows, a Silicon Valley giant stated that the coronavirus outbreak might even affect the ability to meet its Q3 guidance.

In a statement, Microsoft said that it doesn’t expect to meet its ‘More Personal Computing’, segment guidance revenue of $10.75 and $11.15 billion. Microsoft said that it had taken into account China’s situation that surrounded coronavirus for the projection. Also, it is noted that the supply chain is regaining pace, Windows OEM and Surface were severely affected than was expected.
Microsoft stated that although it is seen that there has been a strong demand in line with expectations, but the supply chain is returning to normal operations at a slower pace, than has been anticipated during the time of the Q2 earnings call.
However, only Windows and Surface has taken a hit, as Microsoft says that rest of the Q3 guidance remains unchanged. Also, Microsoft hasn’t provided a new forecast for its ‘More Personal Computing’ segment.
A lot of people have been affected by the Coronavirus outbreak, and it has affected the human life gravely. According to Quartz, apart from companies like Apple, HP and Microsoft, there are other companies that have come forward, to explain how corporate filings and earnings calls have been affected by COVID-19 outbreak.

Microsoft cuts Windows unit revenue outlook on coronavirus impact – Finance – Hardware – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Microsoft said on Wednesday it does not expect to meet its quarterly revenue forecast for its Windows and personal computing business as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, sending its shares down more than 1 percent in after-market trading.
The company said the remaining elements of its fiscal third-quarter outlook were unchanged.
“Although we see strong Windows demand in line with our expectations, the supply chain is returning to normal operations at a slower pace than anticipated,” the company said in a statement.
Broad swaths of the Chinese economy have shut down or slowed because of the virus.
Microsoft is the second company in the trillion dollar club to withdraw outlook. Earlier this month, Apple said that it may not be able to meet its March-quarter sales forecast.
The software maker had previously expected the More Personal Computing unit, which houses Windows, to post third-quarter revenue between US$10.75 billion and US$11.15 billion.
Its Windows and Surface computers had been more negatively impacted than expected, Microsoft said in a statement.
The coronavirus outbreak, believed to have originated in a market selling wildlife in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, has infected about 80,000 people and killed more than 2700, the vast majority in China.

Revamped Windows 10 Start Menu could replace Live Tiles – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: Are you a fan of the Live Tiles feature in Windows 10’s Start Menu? Probably not, which is why Microsoft is reportedly going to kill them off in a future Windows update.
Live Tiles, you may recall, arrived alongside the Windows Phone 7 before making their way to the Windows 8 operating system. Microsoft hoped the feature would make the OS well-suited for both desktop and touchscreen computers, but it wasn’t too be. Despite this, Live Tiles still came to Windows 10’s Start Menu.
In addition to acting as shortcuts, Live Tiles continuously pull information in real-time from the likes of Mail, Spotify, and news and weather applications, but the feature hasn’t been updated since Windows Mobile came to an end, meaning more third-party app makers have dropped support.
According to Windows Latest, citing people familiar with the development of Windows 10, Microsoft is planning to get rid of Live Tiles and replace them with a series of static icons. This redesigned Start menu would be similar to the start menu of Windows 10X, which is designed for dual-screen devices.
It’s unclear how long we’ll have to wait before the change arrives, assuming it does. Microsoft is said to be replacing Live Tiles after the Windows 10 20H2 update that is scheduled to be pushed out in the second half of this year. Windows Latest expects the feature will be killed off in Windows 10’s 2021 update.

Last week it was reported that Microsoft was pushing out new, colorful Windows 10 icons to those in the Windows Insider Program, so the company is planning to change the look of its OS. Removing Live Tiles could be part of those long-term plans.

Microsoft begins rolling out revamped app icons to Windows Insiders – Blog – 10 minute

The big picture: Microsoft’s monochromatic app icons have spent quite some time in Windows 10, but things are soon set to change for consumers, given that the company started pushing out new colorful icons to users in the Windows Insider program. The changes come as part of a design revamp meant to visually unify Windows 10 with Microsoft’s offerings on other platforms, and more importantly, with the company’s own foldable-friendly Windows 10X coming later this year.
We learned about Microsoft’s plan to redesign 100+ Windows app icons in December last year, with a few of them appearing in Windows 10X preview screens. The company’s Office apps made their Fluent Design transition even before that, and now other icon redesigns are making their way to Fast Ring insiders, meaning that a sea of Windows 10 users will soon get to experience them as well.
Alarms & Clock, Calculator, Calendar, Groove Music, Mail, Movies & TV, and Voice Recorder are the first built-in apps to get new icons, with plenty more to follow. They all bear consistent design cues like rounded corners and color patterns of the company’s fluent design language, and it would be nice to see this visual uniformity reflected across more places in Windows 10, even if Microsoft’s primary focus seems to be redesigning its cross-platform apps.

Windows Start menu and tiles on desktops could further take influence from Windows 10X UI (Source: Windows Central)
In her Medium post, Microsoft’s Design Leader for Windows and Devices, Christina Koehn, discusses the evolution of Windows and its icons and notes that with four connected devices per person (estimated), there is a need for simplicity at the systems level for Windows designers. She also comments on Windows 10’s Start Menu and tile interface:

Flat, monochrome icons look great in context of colorful tiles, but as more icon styles enter the ecosystem, this approach needs to evolve. When icons in the taskbar and Start menu are different styles, it creates more cognitive load to scan and find applications. We needed to incorporate more visual cues into the icon design language using our modernized Fluent Design Language.

It remains to be seen how Microsoft evolves the design of its core features like the Start Menu, File Explorer and even the controversial Metro-era tiles interface, among several others, but the new icons should start appearing to Release Preview testers anytime now, alongside a new Windows Update interface that lists optional driver updates from partners to let users decide on their download and installation, giving them more control over updates.

Rockstar will return GTA IV to Steam in March after removing Games for Windows Live code – Blog – 10 minute

Big quote: “Grand Theft Auto IV was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game.” — Rockstar Games
Rockstar announced it will bring GrandTheft Auto IV back to Steam in March. Last month we reported that the publisher had pulled the game due to problems stemming from it using the now-defunct Games for Windows Live (GFWL) platform.
It was unclear at the time what Rockstar’s plans were for the game. The most obvious solution would have been to patch GFWL out of the title. However, the developer was vague about the future of the title, only saying that it was “looking at other options for distributing GTA IV for PC.”
On Tuesday, Rockstar confirmed that it is removing GFWL from GTA IV. It will be returning the game to Steam next month on March 19. The update will combine GTA IV and GTA: Episodes from Liberty City into one package called Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition. Owners of either of the former will be able to upgrade to Complete Edition.

Unfortunately, the updated game will no longer support multiplayer mode or leaderboards. Rockstar did not say why it removed multiplayer. The most probable reason is that GFWL served as the backbone for MP mode. Developers would likely have had to rebuild the entire multiplayer infrastructure.
The publisher also said that a few of the radio stations would be temporarily unavailable, including RamJam FM, Self-Actualization FM, and Vice City FM. Two years ago, Rockstar removed several songs from the game, as well as the entire Russian station Vladivostok FM because of expired licensing agreements. It is unclear if it has run into a similar situation with the three stations it is temporarily removing, but that seems like a reasonable guess considering the game has been around for 12 years. However, Rockstar did promise that the stations would be returning.

Microsoft Warns of Windows 10 Updates that Crash Systems, Delete User Data – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Bleeping Computer and PCWorld.

Microsoft has had to issue major warnings to all Windows 10 users, confirming that the latest ‘Patch Tuesday’ update can cause system freezes and crashes across every supported version of Windows 10 – from Windows 10 Home through to Enterprise and even Server, reports Forbes.
The update designated as ‘KB4524244‘ had been available for four days before Microsoft pulled it, but four days is more than enough time for the bugged patch to be firmly installed in your system.
Another Windows 10 update, ‘KB4532693‘, a security fix, released two years ago by Microsoft has just recently begun causing stop errors or Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crashes. This particular update is quite nefarious because it is also reported to be deleted files – especially files stored on the desktop so be wary if you save content there – as well as user settings, are being reverted to default.
Microsoft has since pulled this update as well, seemingly confirming the reports.
“Thank you, Microsoft, for the latest updates which totally wiped all settings from my system on each startup,” writes one disgruntled user.
“Everything reverted to basic settings [and] all my programme information and settings were also deleted from every programme on my system. Several apps were deleted completely, keyboard settings, language screen res everything gone.”
Other users have complained about finding their desktops having gone “black, icons are gone”, with their Taskbar and Start menus being empty as well, and that having uninstalled the update has not returned any of the information.
This standalone security update has since been removed from all of Windows’ updating services.
I have installed this new update. What do I do now?
While the spread of the update has since been stopped, the update that deletes data and settings has managed to be circulated for some time before it was cancelled. Bleeping Computer reports that AMD and Intel computers had been affected but HP owners have been hit particularly hard with freezing and installation issues.
While Microsoft is working on an improved version of this update – hopefully one without any life-ruining issues – it is recommended that users follow these steps if they have installed these updates recently:
1. In Windows Desktop Search (the little ring on your taskbar) type ‘update history’
2. Click on ‘View your Update History’ when it appears
3. A window will open from Settings listing all your installed updates. At the top, a blue highlighted option says Uninstall Update – click on that
4. A new tab will open called ‘Installed Updates’ and will open a list very similar to the list that appears when you wish to uninstall a regular programme.
5. Go through the updates under Microsoft Windows and select the update suffixed with the number (KB4524244) or (KB4532693 – this update may be much lower in the list) then click Uninstall.
6. When it is done, exit all tabs and restart Windows.
This will ensure that either of the updates won’t cause any permanent damage to your PC due to the updates. For the update that deletes data (KB4532693), if you have previously created a Windows System Restore point then you could try a full System Restore to get your data back and uninstall the update. Otherwise, the prognosis is a bleak one.
Users proactively trying to prepare themselves against these and future updates should download Windows Update Troubleshooter, with which you can hide problematic updates and prevent them from reinstalling.
As this is happening, Microsoft continues to keep a keen eye on the future, pushing the ‘future of Windows updates’ which are expected to target a new generation of dual-screen devices and not for the millions of existing Windows 10 PCs and Laptops. With Windows 10 update improvements being cancelled on top of this.
Updates that crash systems should be unacceptable, let alone that delete user information. Microsoft should be held at a higher standard but continued blundering with how their updating protocol works has left very little good feelings about seeing “Working on Updates” upon start-up.

Windows 10 Your Phone app to support RCS messaging from your computer – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: Apple users have long enjoyed being able to use iMessage from their Macs. Microsoft and Samsung are trying to emulate that by enabling RCS support in Windows 10. This would allow owners of Samsung devices to send RCS messages to other devices that support the protocol. While it’s limited to Samsung devices, support for other Android devices should come soon.
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is supposed to replace the outdated SMS with one that’s similar to internet-based messaging services like iMessage or WhatsApp. Google was even able to finish rolling out RCS in the United States via the Android Messages application. However, it seems that Microsoft is adding RCS support to Your Phone, the built-in Windows 10 app that allows users to link their phone to their computer.
Microsoft is partnering with Samsung to allow the Your Phone app to relay RCS messages sent from Galaxy S20 phones. That said, while Microsoft is starting with Samsung phones, support for other Android phones could come in the future.

Proud to announce that we have partnered with the Samsung Messages team to bring RCS messaging support to #yourphone app via #linktowindows. Starting with the #galaxys20series you will be able to send and receive RCS texts from PC if your default SMS app is Samsung Messages!
— Roberto Bojorquez [Microsoft] (@bojorchess) February 15, 2020

There are a few caveats to using Your Phone. First, the default messaging app has to be Samsung Messages. It doesn’t appear that it works with Google’s Android Messages app just yet. Also, the recipient of the message must support RCS. It’s a good starting point and is a great way for owners of Windows PCs and Android phones (albeit Samsung) to gain iMessage like capabilities.
The RCS collaboration between Microsoft and Samsung is yet another example of the two companies working together. Microsoft worked with Samsung to further integrate Microsoft services into Samsung’s devices, such as pre-installing Microsoft apps and integrating OneDrive with Samsung’s photo app.
Those who don’t have a Samsung phone can still use RCS on their computer via the Android Messages web client. However, this is a good first step for improving the messaging capabilities on Windows 10.

Someone installed Windows 10X on a Surface Go and a MacBook – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: Microsoft is building Windows 10X from the ground up to adapt to various PC form factors. While the initial showing of Windows 10X was on the Surface Neo, two intrepid developers managed to install the upcoming OS on a MacBook and Surface Go. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can install Windows 10X yourself although it requires a bit of technical knowledge.
Microsoft recently released a Windows 10X SDK for developers to begin adapting their applications for dual-screen computers. However, two developers managed to install the fledgling operating system onto a Surface Go and a MacBook.
Twitter user “imbushuo” posted a video of Windows 10X running on the MacBook relatively smoothly. The OS treats the MacBook like a single screen and allows applications to run on either side of the screen or full screen.

— Sunshine Biscuit at scale (@imbushuo) February 13, 2020

Well-known developer Steve Troughton-Smith also managed to get Windows 10X running on a Surface Go. Unfortunately, there were some initial Wi-Fi and touch driver issues. Troughton-Smith posted a complete guide on how to install Windows 10X on different hardware, but it’s not for the faint of heart as it requires Powershell scripts, drive partitioning, and driver work.
It’s probably best to stick with the emulator if you want to play around with Windows 10X.

It worked! Surface Go successfully flashed with Windows 10X 😄 Touch driver not installed by default, nor WiFi pic.twitter.com/VftAK5bLdb
— Steve Troughton-Smith (@stroughtonsmith) February 14, 2020

Microsoft introduced Windows 10X running on the upcoming Surface Neo. The operating system is meant to run on dual-screen devices and might possibly be the future of Windows in the long term.
Microsoft has stripped out all of the legacy UI elements and built it from the ground up to be speedy and more efficient. For now, seeing the new operating system running on various hardware platforms seems to confirm the adaptability of Windows 10X, even if it’s a little buggy.

How can I speed up a Windows 10 laptop? | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

I am trying to resurrect an old but good-in-its-day laptop for my son to use for his A-levels. I have bought a cheap 256GB SSD to improve the read/write speeds, but it seems I am stuck with the current 4GB of memory. Its two memory slots could support 8GB but 4GB DDR2 memory modules are prohibitively expensive at roughly £65 each. It doesn’t seem to make sense spending that sort of money on outdated memory technology for a 10-year-old laptop.
What is the best way to set up Windows 10 so it runs fast on relatively limited memory? Is it worth using a different browser to Chrome? Is Microsoft Office too much of a resource hog?
There must be a lot of perfectly good machines awaiting an opportunity for a second life. Matt

Chip costs are driven by production volumes, so obsolete types of memory are no longer in production, or are very expensive to produce. Often, there are alternatives, such as buying second-hand memory modules, and cannibalising laptops sold on eBay for “spares or repair”.
In this case, there are very few second-hand modules for sale. When DDR2 was standard, many laptops had 2GB, but very few had the 8GB that would need two 4GB modules.
If your laptop can use ECC error correcting memory, then you might be able to buy some of that. ECC memory modules have an extra chip for parity checking, and were used in servers. Even decades ago, servers had lots of memory, so 4GB ECC chips should be easier to find.
On the bright side, 4GB laptops have been common for most of the past decade, and some people still buy them. It’s better to have 8GB, but 4GB is usable.
Lean Windows

Windows 10 has been designed to run well on most computers, including low-power machines with limited memory, such as the Surface Go. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
Microsoft has spent more than a decade making Windows more memory efficient. A laptop that could run Vista well in January 2007 can probably run Windows 10 well today.
Of course, Microsoft had ulterior motives. One was to enable PC manufacturers to make cheaper laptops. Another was to enable Windows to run on smartphones and tablets that only had 1GB or 2GB. Probably neither of those is still important thanks to tumbling memory prices and the failure of Windows smartphones.
A couple of years ago, Microsoft experimented with a version of Windows 10 called Windows Lean, but it didn’t use less memory. Its main purpose was to fit on tablets and cheap laptops with only 16GB or 32GB of storage. Thankfully, that idea seems to have been abandoned. Nobody should be buying laptops with less than 128GB of SSD, or a bigger hard drive.
Quick hits

Type ‘adjust’ into the start menu to find performance options. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
The simplest speed-up routine is to tell Windows to optimise itself for performance. To do this, type “adjust” in the Start menu’s search box and click “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows”. This will bring up the Performance Options properties sheet from the Control Panel. Select “Adjust for best performance” and Windows will drop all the fancy graphical effects such as sliding things in and out of view. You can use the Custom settings to retain any features you want to keep, such as “Show window contents while dragging”.
Next, run the Control Panel, type “power” into the search box in the top right and select “Choose a power plan”. Most laptops are set to “Balanced”. “Power saver” will reduce performance to extend battery life. “High performance” will deliver the best performance but use more energy.
Windows memory management

Task Manager can show you how much memory is being used at any one time. Photograph: Jack Schofield/The Guardian
When we were using Windows XP and Vista, geeks could improve on Windows’ use of memory. Those days have more or less gone. Windows 10 makes such good use of memory, its swapfile (pagefile.sys, hidden on your hard drive) and other resources that it is best left to do its thing.
In my experience, Windows 10 can use anything from 1.2GB to about 3.5GB or more, depending on how much memory you have. If you have more, it will use more. What happens when it runs out of space? It saves the pages of code it’s not using to the swapfile and reloads them into RAM only when they are needed. That’s one reason why fitting an SSD makes a laptop feel much more responsive: swapfile pages reload much faster.
In reality, Windows 10’s memory management is more complicated than that. It distinguishes between many types of memory, depending on whether pages are in use, can be swapped out when necessary, can be overwritten because they are no longer needed, or free. Type resmon into Windows 10’s search box, run the Resource Monitor app, and click the Memory tab for a coloured representation of the RAM used for different purposes, including “hardware reserved”.
What’s eaten my RAM?

Windows 10’s Process Explorer can show you what is using your machine’s memory in more detail. Photograph: Jack Schofield/The Guardian
Sophisticated memory management techniques – including compression – make it hard to know how much memory any particular program is using. Should you include pages that are in RAM but not in use, that are in the swapfile, or use shared resources? Windows provides a lot of common code through dll library files, and if six programs are using the same megabytes of shared code, it’s counted six times instead of once.
The Task Manager provides a crude but useful guide. To run it, press Ctrl-Alt-Del or right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. Click on Name to sort apps to the top. The Memory column shows how much each program is using. To make the column easier to understand, right-click in the header area, choose “Resource values” from the drop-down menu, then Menu and then Percents. On my PC, two browsers, Opera and Vivaldi, are now using more than 20% each, and nothing else matters. The next highest score is Voidtools’ Everything, with 2.6%. Word 2010, with six documents open, is consuming 0.6%, and a small Excel spreadsheet 0.4%.
Microsoft’s Process Explorer provides more details. Double-clicking a program’s name tells you how it’s using memory, how much code is shared, and how much virtual memory (ie swapfile space) it’s using. The Working Set Private number, which excludes shared code and swapfile space, tells you how much real RAM a program is using at the time. Obviously, it can vary. As a general indicator, the Peak Working Set number is probably as good as any.
Once your laptop is up and running, a quick check with either utility will tell you if any programs are using more memory than they are worth.
Start-up programs and services

You can now change which apps start at boot using the Apps menu of the Settings app. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
The Task Manager has Start-up and Services tabs that tell Windows what to load when it boots. Both are more or less obsolete. It is worth checking for start-up programs and disabling ones you don’t want, but do that from the Apps section of the Settings (cogwheel) app.
When we were using clunky old XP and Vista, disabling services could make a big difference, and some of us swore by Black Viper’s guides. Today, I wouldn’t make the effort, and Black Viper stopped providing service configurations with the April 2018 version of Windows 10.
If a process or service “goes rogue” – which can include a single browser tab – it’s easier to find it in Process Explorer, right-click it, then suspend, restart or kill it. Task Manager also lets you suspend and kill tasks, which can be handy if malware grabs your browser.
Browser choice

Process Explorer can show you how much memory your browser is using, here displaying Vivaldi. Photograph: Jack Schofield/The Guardian
Every Windows browser will run in 4GB, but the “lightest” common browser is Microsoft Edge. This is partly because it’s low on features and extensions, and partly because it’s a modern Windows Store app. Store apps can be suspended in the background, though this is hidden away in the Privacy section of the Settings app, under “Background apps”.
But Microsoft is now switching to a heavier version of Edge based on open source Chromium code, just like Google Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave and many others, except Firefox.
There’s not much to choose between the Chromium-based browsers: they all consume massive amounts of memory and resources. Opera has generally been the lightest, but “Edgium” could change that. I’ve been using the beta test version and it works well. Also, the code has been de-Googled, which is a plus point for people avoiding Google’s “surveillance capitalism”.
Otherwise, the keys to managing browser memory are not to install many extensions and not to open too many tabs. If you can’t help having hundreds, use a “lazy loading” browser. With lazy loading turned on, the browser will only reload or refresh current tabs when you click on them. I once had more than 600 tabs in Firefox and about 300 in Vivaldi, and both still worked perfectly. Alternatively install a tab suspender such as the Great Suspender for Chrome, which unloads dormant tabs but saves the URL so you can go straight back to it if you want. If the browser does slow down, just close and re-open it to free up some memory.
The old advice about turning it off and on again has been replaced by “restart your browser”.

Macs saw almost double the number of malware threats than Windows PCs last year – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: “Macs don’t get viruses,” or so the long-time saying goes. But according to Malwarebytes’ annual State of Malware report, that’s far from true. In fact, there was almost double the number of threats targeting Macs compared to Windows PCs in 2019.
The report states that Macs saw an average of 11 threats per endpoint in 2019, whereas Windows systems had an average of 5.8 threats—the first time Macs outpaced PCs when it comes to malware threats.

In 2018, there were just 4.8 Mac threats detected per endpoint, marking a 400 percent YoY increase. Malwarebytes notes that part of the increase can be attributed to an increase in the Mac userbase but said that “when calculated in threats per endpoint, Macs still outpaced Windows by nearly 2 to 1.”
“The increase in Mac endpoints with Malwarebytes installed only increased around 40 percent from 2018 to 2019. So, although this growth is definitely a factor, it is far too small to account for the growth in malware,” Malwarebytes’ Thomas Reed, director of Mac and mobile, told The Register.
Adware and Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) were the most prevalent threats for Macs. NewTab, which is installed as a browser extension or app that loads ads, was detected around 30 million times. Adware was also the biggest threat to Windows devices

Businesses are also being targeted more often, with a 13 percent increase in threats against companies. And while ransomware detections declined slightly from 2018 due to a lower rate of WannaCry detections leftover from 2017, Ryuk detections were up 543 percent, and Sodinokibi detections jumped 820 percent. According to a recent New York Times report, ransomware attacks were up 41 percent last year as average ransom payments reached $190,94.
With more Macs being targeted, Malwarebytes writes that Mac users can “no longer say that their beloved systems are immune from malware.”
