Recording 8K videos on the Galaxy S20 uses 600MB per minute – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: After months of speculation and anticipation, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S20 series yesterday. One of the devices’ most impressive features is the ability to capture video at an 8K resolution, but recording at 7680 x 4320 comes at a high storage cost: 600MB for every minute.
In addition to the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung showed off the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra—the first phones to support 8K recording—at its Unpacked event. Capturing footage with four times the pixels as 4K is obviously going to eat up a lot of storage space, and SamMobile has revealed exactly how much.
Samsung says one minute of 8K video will result in a file size of 600MB. While the S20 is limited to 128GB of internal storage, the S20+ (5G version) and S20 Ultra come in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models. You could also opt for a 1TB microSD card, which is enough for plenty of 8K clips.

There are a couple of limitations when shooting in 8K on the S20 handsets. Videos are limited to five minutes in length, and don’t expect to be hitting 60fps or even 30fps at this resolution—frame rates are capped at 24fps.
Samsung notes that recording in 8K allows users to grab 33-megapixel stills straight from the videos, meaning you can pick out high-quality photos from a clip.
While the scarcity and expense of 8K televisions mean watching your footage at its native resolution won’t be easy, Samsung’s partnership with YouTube allows users to upload the 8K vids directly to their channel from one of the devices.

Chrome will start blocking intrusive ad formats within short-form videos- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Google’s recent advertising shake-up has extended into video, where its Chrome browser will soon start blocking mid-roll and other ad formats for short-form videos.
Google is complying with a new standard from the Coalition for Better Ads, which applies to videos lasting eight minutes or less across desktop, mobile web and in-app.
The standard filters out mid-roll ads, pre-roll ads and other pods 31 seconds or longer that cannot be skipped after five seconds, as well as display ads that are in the middle one-third of the video player or take up 20% or more of a video.
The standard goes into effect on 5 August.
“Chrome will expand its user protections and stop showing all ads on sites in any country that repeatedly show these disruptive ads,” Google product manager Jason James said in a blog post.
Importantly, the standard also applies to YouTube, which recently revealed advertising revenues of $15bn.
Chrome, which accounts for roughly 70% of the US browser market, is cleaning up the video ad experience less than a month after it announced it’s phasing out third-party cookies in a significant blow to digital marketers.
While the decision to axe third-party cookies was more about alievating privacy concerns, Chrome’s move to block intrusive video ads is meant to improve the browser user experience by establishing best practices, said Matt Barash, head of strategy and business development at AdColony.
“Certain adtech companies that go out and tout browser-based, high-impact, non-standard formats will be penalized by this announcement,” he said.
AdColony is a member of the Coalition for Better Ads. Other members include Facebook, Unilever, News Corp and GroupM.
“GroupM has incorporated the Better Ads Standards into our inventory quality evaluation process, enabling our clients around the world to advertise more effectively in brand-safe environments,” said Joe Barone, managing partner of brand safety Americas at GroupM.
“Because they reflect consumer preferences, the Better Ads Standards are an essential tool for brands and publishers who aim to build trust and deepen relationships with their audiences.”
Smaller publishers – or ones that rush to hit quarterly targets with invasive video ads – may also feel the brunt of this decision from the Coalition for Better Ads.
“This speaks to a larger movement that is happening to clean up digital advertising,” said Andrew Serby, senior vice-president of marketing at Zefr, a company that helps brands advertise on YouTube.
“Google is taking charge here, which is good for consumers and brands, but disruptive for some of the bottom-feeding, audience-based and rich media companies that have largely been creating an interruptive and cheap digital space.”

Google Apologizes for Sharing Your Private Videos with StrangersIT News Africa – Up to date technology news, IT news, Digital news, Telecom news, Mobile news, Gadgets news, Analysis and Reports – Blog – 10 minute

February 5, 2020 • Online & Social, Security, Top Stories
Google has admitted that a small percentage of their Google Photos users had their private videos sent to the accounts of complete strangers by Google themselves.

Sourced from Engadget.

A technical issue, as Google states, is what was affecting their Takeout Service, which lets people download their Google Photos data, and caused the unplanned sharing of the videos between 21 November and 25 November last year, writes The Verge.
“We are notifying people about a bug that may have affected users who used Google Takeout to export their Google Photos content between November 21 and November 25”, reads a statement from a Google spokesperson to 9t5Google.
Google’s emails do not provide any details on how many people were affected by this privacy leak, neither does it say how many videos per account were sent to strangers. The issue was fixed within five days, and less than 0.01 per cent of users who used the Takeout Service were affected, according to a report from 9to5Google, a website dedicated to news pertaining to the company.
With the over 1 billion users Google Photos has accumulated, an approximate population of 100-thousand user-accounts could have been affected by the issue, of which the amount of private video leaks per account is currently unknown.
“We are notifying people about a bug that may have affected users who used Google Takeout to export their Google Photos content between November 21 and November 25”, reads a statement from a Google spokesperson. “These users may have received either an incomplete archive or videos – not photos – that were not theirs. We fixed the underlying issue and have conducted an in-depth analysis to help prevent this from ever happening again.”
The search and advertising giant has since apologized.

Google Accidentally Shared Private Videos of Some Users With Others – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Google might have mistakenly shared your private videos saved on the company’s servers with other users, the tech giant admitted yesterday in a security notification sent quietly to an undisclosed number of affected users.
The latest privacy mishap is the result of a “technical issue” in Google’s Takeout, a service that backs up all your Google account data into a single file and then lets you download it straight away.

According to a screenshot Jon Oberheide of Duo Security shared on Twitter, the issue reportedly remained active between 21st November and 25th November last year, during which “some videos in Google Photos [service] were incorrectly exported to unrelated user’s archives.”
Vice versa, if you had also requested for your account backup during the same 5-day period, you might have even received unrelated videos from other Google accounts.

So, the data leak incident potentially affects only those who used Google Takeout service in late November last year and doesn’t involve photographs you uploaded to Google Photos.
However, the extent of the bug remains unclear, as Google roughly saying “one or more videos in your Google Photos account was affected by this issue.”
The search engine giant also apologized for the glitch and confirmed that it has identified the issue and resolved it.

Google software glitch sent some users’ videos to strangers | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Google has said a software bug resulted in some users’ personal videos being emailed to strangers.
The flaw affected users of Google Photos who requested to export their data in late November. For four days the export tool wrongly added videos to unrelated users’ archives.
As a result, private videos may have been sent to strangers, while downloaded archives may not have been complete.
“We are notifying people about a bug that may have affected users who used Google Takeout to export their Google Photos content between November 21 and November 25,” a Google spokesperson said.
“These users may have received either an incomplete archive, or videos – not photos – that were not theirs. We fixed the underlying issue and have conducted an in-depth analysis to help prevent this from ever happening again. We are very sorry this happened.”
The company emphasised that the bug only affected users of Google Takeout, a download-your-data tool, and not users of Google Photos more broadly. It did not give specific numbers on how many users were affected but said it was less than 0.01% of Google Photos users.
Google said it had self-reported to the Irish data protection commissioner, who oversees the company in the EU and has the power to levy fines of up to 4% of annual turnover for breaches of the General Data Protection Regulation.
Javvad Malik, a security awareness advocate at KnowBe4, praised Google for the relative speed of its response but added: “While the issue was limited to videos being incorrectly shared when downloading an archive, it is a data breach and impacted the privacy of users.
“Many users trust cloud providers, especially for photos and videos which are automatically backed up from mobile devices. It is imperative that cloud providers maintain that trust through robust security measures that allow users to restore their data, while at the same time ensuring data is kept safe from accidental or malicious leaks.”
Google Photos offers unlimited cloud storage of images, with the trade-off that Google has access to the pictures and can use them to train its machine learning models.
This week the company started trialling a service in North America in which users can have 10 of their photos each month chosen algorithmically and printed and posted to them for $8 (£6.15) a month.
On Monday Google revealed its quarterly earnings and disclosed for the first time how much revenue it makes from YouTube advertising. The video sharing site raised more than $1bn a month last year, Google said.

Google says it accidentally exported users’ videos in Google Photos to strangers – Blog – 10 minute

Facepalm: Google is informing users of Google Photos that their private videos might have been sent to strangers. The problem was caused by a “technical issue” in the company’s Takeout service, which allows people to download data from Google apps as backups.
According to Google’s alert, anyone who used the Takeout tool to download one or more videos from Google Photos between November 21 and 25 may find they were incorrectly sent to other users.
“These users may have received either an incomplete archive, or videos — not photos — that were not theirs. We fixed the underlying issue and have conducted an in-depth analysis to help prevent this from ever happening again. We are very sorry this happened,” a spokesperson said in a statement to 9to5Google.

Whoa, what? @googlephotos? pic.twitter.com/2cZsABz1xb
— Jon Oberheide (@jonoberheide) February 4, 2020

Google recommends users delete any export performed during that 5-day period and perform another export of their content.
The tech giant fixed the issue in under a week, adding that just 0.01 percent of Google Photo users who used Takeout during this time were affected. But with Google Photos boasting over 1 billion users, the number of people impacted could be quite high. The company added that none of its other apps were affected.
The revelation that Google Photos shared users’ videos with strangers is going to look bad for the company. The service is currently trialing a new subscription service that automatically picks your best ten photos from the last 30 days and sends them out as prints, so any privacy concerns related to Google Photos could worry potential customers.

YouTube pressured to demonetise and delist viral climate denial videos- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A US activist group has slammed YouTube for allowing climate denial videos to profit on its platform.
Avaaz undertook a study to learn how Google is shaping climate change discourse as we approach the 11-year deadline set out by the UN – the so-called point of no return to undo manmade climate change. It found that ads from major brands such as Samsung, L’Oreal and Danone had appeared next to a host of climate disinformation videos.
According to the non-profit’s research, 16% of the top 100 related videos for the search term ‘global warming’ contained misinformation, with an average of over 1m views per video for the top ten most-viewed.
Julie Deruy, senior campaigner at Avaaz, said: “YouTube is the largest broadcasting channel in the world, and it is driving millions of people to climate misinformation videos.
“This is not about free speech, this is about the free advertising YouTube is giving to factually inaccurate videos that risk confusing people about one of the biggest crises of our time.
“The bottom line is that YouTube should not feature, suggest, promote, advertise or lead users to misinformation.”
The group credited steps made by YouTube on anti-vaccination and conspiracy theory content and asked for the same measures to be applied against broader misinformation and disinformation content, including climate misinformation. It suggested working with fact-checkers to determine misinformation before demonetising offenders and removing them from recommendation engines.
Avaaz asked additional questions about how YouTube’s recommendation engines are lining up videos that can misinform readers on climate change.
It said Google’s global warming info panels surfaced on the majority of the videos Avaaz deems to be climate misinformation. Some 3.5m impressions have hit those information panels since June 2018.
Misinformation does not breach YouTube policies, it can only be removed when if it breaches hate speech, harassment, violence or scam rules.
A YouTube spokesperson pointed out that its recommendations systems are not designed to filter or demote videos or channels based on specific perspectives.
They said: “YouTube has strict ad policies that govern where ads are allowed to appear and we give advertisers tools to opt out of content that doesn’t align with their brand. We’ve also significantly invested in reducing recommendations of borderline content and harmful misinformation, and raising up authoritative voices on YouTube. In 2019 alone, the consumption on authoritative news publishers’ channels grew by 60%.
“As our systems appear to have done in the majority of cases in this report, we prioritise authoritative voices for millions of news and information queries, and surface information panels on topics prone to misinformation — including climate change – to provide users with context alongside their content. We continue to expand these efforts to more topics and countries.”
It included ad-supported videos created by news organizations like Fox News and Ideacity. YouTube argues that it is important for it to allow the discourse around the topic. Contextually there are governments around the world led by climate deniers, putting the organization in a trickier position. It claimed that advertisers can exclude their ads from videos related to climate change and global warming.
In response to the research, the Conscious Advertising Network questioned whether there “has ever been a more dangerous form of misinformation?”
A spokesperson said: “An economic model based on the possible collapse of society. In the year that the UK hosts COP26 the urgency to base the narrative on truth has never been clearer. We call on everyone in the advertising ecosystem to step up and take responsibility right now, starting with a long hard look at where their advertising is going and funding.”
L’Oréal issued a comment.
“The information promoted by these videos is in direct contradiction with L’Oréal’s commitments and the work we have been carrying out for many years to protect the environment. We are collaborating with YouTube teams asking them to use all the technological means at their disposal to better inform the platform’s users about the nature of these videos and to limit their impact.”

Why so many careers videos are dull as dishwater- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

You know exactly the kind of video I’m talking about. The soundtrack straddles a line between elevator music and easy listening Dad Rock. The speakers all talk directly to the camera, using words like ‘synergy’, ‘dynamic’ and ‘horizontal progression’ – preferably while strolling faux-casually through the office. The cutaways consists of people nodding on the phone and laughing over an especially riveting pie chart. It’s the stock photography of videos: the classic recruitment video.
This video is, in my humble opinion, bad. Why? Let me break it down for you with my Bad Video Checklist:

Have I been unable to learn anything new or unique about this company?
Did the dialogue feel forced or scripted?
Did the speakers opt for industry buzzwords over natural conversational language?
Was the focus of the video the company’s mission instead of why someone should come and work there?
Did the whole thing just feel a bit, for lack of a better word, soulless?

If you answered yes to the majority of the above questions then I’m afraid, my friend, you’ve got a Bad Video on your hands. But before we fix it, we have to understand why video is important for your employer brand.
As activist Marian Wright Edelman once said, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” Video is a gateway into your company that a description on a website just can’t match – it allows potential employees to actually visualise themselves in your office, rather than just read about it.
This is particularly important if you’re in an industry that has any sort of PR problem. If your applicant pool is lacking in diversity, your first port-of-call should be the image that your company projects online, particularly in terms of its photography and film content.
Bad to good
A good video piques the interest of the potential employee and gives them a sense of what it is to work at your company, whether in a literal, day-to-day sense or a broader, value-driven sense. It shows them, rather than tells them, exactly who you’re looking for. It also – perhaps a little cynically – provides that sweet, sweet shareable content for social media.
Right, so, what does a good video look like then? ‘Good’ can manifest itself in a whole host of guises, but the uniting factor is a thorough research and ideation phase. Whether it’s a simple interviews-and-cutaways number or a higher concept piece, the driving themes behind the video should be the result of interviews conducted with stakeholders throughout the business to find out what actually makes your company unique and interesting. I’m not talking about the ping pong table or the free fruit. I’m talking about the culture, the community and the opportunities available.
Once you have a handle on that, you’re ready to get started on planning. If you’re choosing the talking heads route, there are a few essential points to consider: firstly, and I cannot stress this enough, do not script the interview content. You may have the best actors in the world on your hands, all of whom can carry a script off as if speaking totally spontaneously, but chances are you don’t.
Good to go
The difference between scripted and unscripted interview content is stark, and the latter adds such a crucial layer of warmth and authenticity to a video. If you feel the need to plant key phrases, then train your interviewees on the relevant messaging beforehand and allow them to land on it naturally in their answers. It will be worth it, I promise you.
Secondly, it’s important to put the same value on a careers video that you would on a corporate video. A shoddily-made careers video shows potential employees that you don’t care about your image as an employer, and a generic one will simply attract the generic people. Make sure that whoever is making this video for you, whether agency or in-house, has the right knowledge, skills and brief to make something that you’ll feel proud to post on your LinkedIn profile.
After all this talk of avoiding generic, the last point to consider is about ensuring that you don’t stray to the other end of the spectrum – sometimes in the quest to look unique, businesses end up with a cringe-inducing montage of people clinking craft beers, set to a tropical house soundtrack that may as well be produced by Kygo. Don’t try to force the cool factor, just focus on what makes your company a great place to work.
If you’re looking to get a little adventurous, then why not try a scripted concept film, such as Absolut’s The Vodka With Nothing To Hide (created by BBH). A concept film can spark much more excitement and interest than an interview-style video, but it’s also much harder to execute, so make sure you have the best possible team on-hand to pull it off. This is where the research and development stage truly becomes vital, as a concept can’t just be plucked out of mid-air. It should instead be a smart, well-considered representation of the values and behaviours you seek to promote in your organisation.
In summary, I present to you my good video checklist:

Does the content feel interesting and unique to this company?
Do the speakers seem natural and relaxed?
Does the soundtrack and videography style suit the tone conveyed by the speakers?
After watching this video, could you tell someone exactly why they should work at this company?
If it’s a concept video, does it feel well thought-out and executed?

Now get out there and become the next Martin Scor-careers-e.
Isobel Moulder, production manager at Wiser.

Facebook to remove deepfake videos in run-up to 2020 US election – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Facebook said it will remove deepfakes and other manipulated videos from its platform if they have been edited, but not content that is parody or satire, in a move aimed at curbing misinformation ahead of the US presidential election.
It would also remove misleading media if it was a result of technologies like AI that “merges, replaces or superimposes content on to a video, making it appear to be authentic”, the California-based company said in a blog post dated January 6.
“This policy does not extend to content that is parody or satire, or video that has been edited solely to omit or change the order of words,” Facebook said.
The social media giant told Reuters that as part of its new policy it will not remove a heavily edited video that attempted to make US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seem incoherent by slurring her speech and making it appear like she was repeatedly stumbling over her words.
“The doctored video of Speaker Pelosi does not meet the standards of this policy and would not be removed. Only videos generated by artificial intelligence to depict people saying fictional things will be taken down,” Facebook said in a statement.
“Once the video of Speaker Pelosi was rated by a third-party fact-checker we reduced its distribution, and critically, people who saw it, tried to share it or already had received warnings that it was false”.
Facebook has been criticised over its content policies by politicians from across the spectrum.
Democrats have blasted the company for refusing to fact-check political advertisements, while Republicans have accused it of discriminating against conservative views, a charge that it has denied.
In the run-up to the US presidential election in November 2020, social platforms have been under pressure to tackle the threat of deepfakes, which use artificial intelligence to create hyper-realistic videos where a person appears to say or do something they did not.

Facebook will ban deepfakes, but many fake videos can still fall through the cracks – Blog – 10 minute

In context: Facebook is stirring more controversy around its content policies with new changes that focus on fake videos created using artificial intelligence. At the same time, misleading content created using other techniques will only be marked as “false” and prevented from going viral through the news feed.
It’s no secret that Facebook is under pressure due to its controversial stance on political ads and its general policies on what content needs to go through fact-checking filters.
The social giant recently announced that it will ban deepfakes on its platform as a way to prevent them from interfering with the public perception on candidates of the 2020 presidential election campaign. The policy change was first reported by the Washington Post and confirmed by Facebook on Monday night.
The decision means Facebook will begin removing all content that has been manipulated “in ways that aren’t apparent to an average person” such as through machine learning techniques, which have proven quite adept in the recent past. And while deepfakes aren’t as widespread as other types of manipulated content, the scale of Facebook’s platform can be used to weaponize attacks on a politician’s image through content that has been edited in a way that makes people think an official said something they didn’t actually say.

The obvious problem with the policy is that it doesn’t extend to content that is parody or satire, according to Facebook’s Monika Bickert. That’s also true for “video that has been edited solely to omit or change the order of words.” The Washington Post notes that misleading videos that are created using conventional editing methods could slip through the cracks, offering the notable example of a viral video where House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s voice was altered using readily available software.
On the other hand, a video that doesn’t meet the new criteria for removal but violates the other Community Standards like hate speech and graphic violence can still get the boot from Facebook.

The company says it doesn’t want to make a stricter policy where it removes all manipulated videos flagged by its fact-checking filters or one of its 50 worldwide partners that comb through content in over 40 languages. Instead, the social giant will mark some of that content as false and control its visibility in the News Feed so that people can see things in context. The approach isn’t ideal, but Facebook thinks it’s a good compromise since false videos would still get uploaded on other platforms, which may or may not provide any clues about their authenticity.
Back in September 2019, Facebook partnered with Microsoft and several universities to create better open-source tools for detecting deepfakes as part of the Deep Fake Detection Challenge. The company poured $10 million towards research grants, hoping to encourage experts to contribute their ideas and spearhead development.
