Twitter flags doctored Trump video about ‘racist baby’ as manipulated media | Technology- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Twitter has flagged a video tweeted by Donald Trump, which contained a fake CNN news segment about a “racist baby”, adding a warning label that the post contained manipulated media.
The video, which had been doctored to make it appear as if were a CNN broadcast, features two toddlers running and includes a fake chyron that reads “Terrified todler (sic) runs from racist baby”. The clip later accuses “fake news” of spreading misinformation.
Twitter added a label to the video, which was tweeted out by Trump late on Thursday evening, marking it as manipulated. Earlier in the day, Facebook removed Trump campaign ads that prominently featured a Nazi symbol.
This latest move from Twitter comes after Trump signed an executive order last month is designed to narrow protections for social media companies over the content posted on their platforms.
Although Twitter had taken a largely hands-off approach to the president’s controversial tweets, in recent weeks the company began adding a label that fact-checked misinformation amplified by the US president, as well as a note cautioning that a post glorified violence.
The company’s policy prohibits sharing videos that have been “deceptively altered”, which is what earned the video sourced from a pro-Trump meme creator a warning label. The platform previously enforced the policy when the White House social media director, Dan Scavino, posted a manipulated video that made it appear as if Joe Biden had endorsed Trump.
Later on Thursday night, the president posted another video, which included another apparently manipulated CNN clip. The video again accuses journalists of amplifying fake news, and misconstruing what happened when a white Trump supporter chased after an Uber driver. It features CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta speaking to the camera, with a fake chyron that reads: “Trumps Fault? White Man in MAGA Hat Attacks Black Uber Driver.”
The manipulated toddler video shared by the president remained unlabelled on Facebook. Earlier this month, Facebook employees staged a virtual “walkout” over CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to leave up a post from Trump that appeared to encourage violence against demonstrators protesting police brutality. Trump invoked the phrase, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”, which dates back to the civil rights era, when it was used by a segregationist politician and white police chief justifying a crackdown against protestors. Twitter hid the message behind a grey box.
Twitter previously labeled a Trump post about fraudulent mail-in ballots with a message that reads, “Get the facts about mail-in ballots”, and redirected the public to news articles fact-checking Trump’s false claims.
The social network has also removed Trump tweets for copyright infringement after Trump used unlicensed music in an advert featuring music from the film Dark Knight Rises and in a video set to the song Photograph by the band Nickelback.

PlayStation 5: the video games console is not dead yet | Games – Blog – 10 minute

Last night in a livestreamed broadcast, Sony showed its new video game console, the PlayStation 5, for the first time, along with 28 new games that will be out this year or next. It is a futuristic-looking thing, all white curves and black and blue-LED accents and a touch of mid-00s service robot about it. One version is digital-only, the other comes with a drive for people who prefer to buy games on disc.
As cloud-based and Netflix-like subscription services have gained traction in the video game world, the “end of the console” has become a popular conversation point. Two years ago at E3, the yearly video games conference, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer told the Guardian that “we pivoted about three or four years ago to thinking about the gamer first, not the device first … Our focus is on bringing console quality games that you see on TV or PC to any device.” But Sony is doubling down on the idea of the games console, of generational technology shifts that make new kinds of games possible, and on the idea of selling us a new box by funding games that you can only play on PlayStation 5.

“The launch of a new video games console doesn’t just mark the passage of time, it represents a new paradigm, the promise of a new kind of creative expression,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Simon Rutter last night.
“I can recall a couple of years ago people were definitely sounding the death knell, saying either that the PS4 was the last one or that the PS5 was going to the last one, but [new consoles are] important to the people who play games. In general terms consumers like novelty, but also, there’s still more to come from the technology of a console.”
The technology that Rutter is talking about is present in the PlayStation 5’s new DualSense controller as well as in the console’s innards. It has triggers that resist the pressure of your fingers, letting a stiff brake feel different from smooth acceleration on tarmac in a racing game such as Gran Turismo 7, or drawing a bow feel different to shooting a gun in a first-person shooter. Inside the box, a speedy SSD makes loading times exponentially faster, meaning less time spent in elevators or squeezing through narrow passages in games while the console frantically loads in the next area.
Video game creatives are still coming out with exceptional games for the PlayStation 4 but, nonetheless, there’s a feeling among developers and players that it’s time for a change. It’s been nearly seven years since the PlayStation 4 was released, and modern games such as The Last of Us Part II and God of War push it so hard that the poor thing sounds like it’s about to take off. (Incidentally, Rutter assures me that “a great deal of effort” has gone into making sure the PS5 will be less noisy.)

“Console life cycles are fairly alone in technology terms, so when upgrades happen what we’re hearing is there’s an expectation of a noticeable change in how people game,” says Rutter. “When we put that together with the feedback that we were getting from the developers, there was a happy, serendipitous meeting of minds. The technology allows us to implement the kind of speeds and data flows that developers appreciate, but at the same time they realise very significant gameplay benefits for players.”
Those gameplay benefits are impossible to discern from a video, of course, but it’s not exactly hard to notice that the footage shown from PlayStation 5 games last night looks so good it’s barely credible. Horizon Forbidden West showed detailed desert vistas that extended for miles; Gran Turismo 7’s shiny race cars look actually better than real life; any given still from Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart looks like it could be from a particularly expensive Dreamworks movie.
But with Microsoft’s Project xCloud and Google Stadia (among others) touting streaming services that will supposedly be able to deliver games with cutting-edge graphics via the cloud, to any screen, without asking you to pay £500 or more for a new console, the question is whether this focus on a brand-new shiny box puts Sony behind the curve. That said, the muted reception for Google Stadia’s suggests that plenty of people aren’t ready to divest themselves from the concept of a games console yet – and Rutter maintains that now is not the time to move away.
“What we can do today on PlayStation 5 is unique and would be would be difficult if it were just a service or subscription option,” he says. “While the technology still enables us to come up with ideas that enable new creative possibilities, there will always be room for new consoles.”

MultiChoice Adds Netflix and Amazon Video Prime Streaming for Subscribers | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Image sourced from The Vanguard Nigeria

South African tv dish satellite operator MultiChoice will soon be adding both streaming services Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to its DStv platform. This comes as the pay-TV operator continues to show growth in the market, adding roughly another 900,000 DStv and GOtv subscribers over its last financial year.
MultiChoice already offers its own subscription-based video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming service. Now, the company seems set to add another swathe of subscribers to its already robust base of 19.5 million users, according to its latest financial results.
By adding these two international streaming services to its existing platform with DStv, MultiChoice seems set on continuing its mission as a “super aggregator” – a tactic used by other pay-tv platforms in the US, UK or New Zealand over the past year.
Now, existing subscribers will receive access to further streaming services through DStv simply by paying their monthly bill in the local currency for the Netflix and Amazon add-ons. This will no doubt be a further way to dissuade customers from choosing these streaming services over DStv and abandoning the satellite service completely. Now, users need not leave DStv to receive access to Netflix.

“We have long been a content aggregator, and this is proof of our aggregator model at work – providing simplicity, choice and convenience for our customers,” says Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice CEO.
“As our industry evolves, we believe that we are well-positioned to benefit from both worlds – a large, growing pay-TV market in Africa, as well as an emerging over-the-top (OTT) opportunity, where our own OTT services and aggregation capabilities can drive success.”
MultiChoice has shown a 5% increase in subscriber growth in its 2019/2020 financial year, taking its total pay-TV subscriber base to 19.5 million households with South Africa still representing the company’s largest market (8.4 million households). The rest of Africa represents a total of 11.1 million households for the platform.
MultiChoice is also getting ready to roll-out and launch its as-yet-unnamed “DStv dishless”, stand-alone DStv streaming service that will mimic its existing direct-to-Home (DTH) service but without the need for any installation.
MultiChoice continues to produce local content
According to Channel24, MultiChoice has produced 3850 additional hours of local content on top of its already heft library of 56,800 hours of locally-produced content, at least 40% of its total library.
The company plans on doing two new co-productions, Blood Psalms and Rogue, launch four new local content TV channels including a new action movie channel and plans to further ramp up its local content production in 2021.

Dame Judi Dench says she’s ‘not allowed’ any time off from TikTok video rehearsals- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Dame Judi Dench has revealed that her grandson, Sam Williams, has put her on a fairly non-stop rehearsal schedule for TikTok videos, which they have been filming together in lockdown.
Speaking on This Morning, the 85-year-old teased that she is “not allowed any time off” from rehearsing for the short clips.
“I’m not allowed any time off, I’ve got to go on and then he says ‘No, we are not ready to film yet’ and I have to go on doing it until I get it right, quite right!” Dench said.

In one of the short videos, Dench is seen dancing alongside Williams via an iPad – the duo perform the same routine simultaneously.
In another, Dench does quizzes with Williams and responds to riddles.

Elsewhere in the interview, Dench spoke about being chosen to front the cover of British Vogue for the publication’s June issue.
“It was a lovely day,” she said of the photoshoot, adding that she is “squeamish” about having her photo taken.
“But we had the most lovely day and it was very relaxed. It was at the very beginning of the year,” she said.
“I was taken there and put in wonderful clothes and there were two wind machines – that was my favourite.”
The cover made history as Dench was the oldest ever cover star to front the magazine.

For the cover, Dench was photographed wearing a pink, floral silk organza Dolce & Gabbana trench coat, while further images inside the issue show the Skyfall star dressed in a cream silk Armani Prive tunic.
The accompanying interview took place several weeks after the shoot, when the UK was in full lockdown.

During the interview, Dench urged people to look out for those who live alone during the coronavirus outbreak.
“I am sure I feel like everyone else, such unprecedented times are quite hard to comprehend,” she explained.
“What is a good thing is that it has made people aware of the predicament of others who are completely alone. If a great deal of kindness comes out of this, then that will be a plus.”

Japan’s video gaming grandma, 90, plays her way into record books | Games – Blog – 10 minute

Every day 90-year-old Japanese grandma Hamako Mori flexes her fingers to keep them nimble. Not for knitting or needlepoint, but to stay in shape for playing video games.
The pensioner known as “Gamer Grandma” spends three or more hours a day battling monsters and going on missions in the virtual worlds of her favourite games, and even has a popular YouTube channel for her fans.
“I’m passionate about playing games every day,” the white-haired widow told AFP in an interview conducted by videochat.
“Every day is an enjoyable day,” she said, describing eviscerating onscreen foes as a fantastic stress reliever.

Mori cuts an elegant, mild-mannered figure, with her hair pulled back into a ponytail and a pair of large glasses perched on her nose.
She begins the videos she posts on her YouTube channel with a friendly “Konnichiwa” and a bow.
But her grandmotherly demeanour disappears when she plays, transformed into a gun-toting character in Call of Duty or a sword-wielding android in NieR: Automata.
Mori, who lives in Chiba, south-east of Tokyo with her family, holds a Guinness world record certifying her as the world’s oldest gaming YouTuber.
“She always gets into the games,” her only grandchild, 43-year-old Keisuke Nagao, told AFP.
“I think she is slightly different. Ordinary old people are not so enthusiastic about video games as she is.”
Mori isn’t new to the gaming world, and has played some 200 titles since she took up the hobby some four decades ago.
Her first console was a Cassette Vision, which she bought in 1981 after being intrigued by her children’s obsession with gaming.
“I discovered that there was this fascinating thing that existed in the world,” she said.
She has played most of the gaming world’s smash hits including Super Mario Brothers, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy and Call of Duty, and admits to sometimes staying up until 2am when she is sucked into a session.
Her favourite games include action-adventure series Grand Theft Auto and popular fantasy role-playing game Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
“You can do whatever you want to” in a game, she said, describing them as a “motivation in life”.

Mori usually plays alone at home, but launched a YouTube channel in 2014 to connect with other gamers.
She posts new videos filmed by her grandson three or four times a month and has attracted 300,000 subscribers and millions of views with content featuring her gaming but also showing her daily life.
“It’s fun being watched by a lot of people, rather than playing alone,” she said of her Gamer Grandma channel.

Among her videos is one showing her blowing out candles on a cake to celebrate her 90th birthday with her family. Another features her unboxing a brand-new PlayStation console.
At 90, Mori is fighting fit, but she says some state-of-the-art games require agile hand motions that can prove challenging.
“It’s getting hard. It really is,” she said, describing exercises she does with her fingers and hands every day to keep herself game-ready.
But she has no intention of giving up gaming. “I won’t put it down just because it’s difficult … It’s better than doing nothing!”
And she hopes with practice she can improve further. “I want to play well no matter how old I am,” she said. “I want to continue as long as possible.”
Mori is something of an evangelist for video games, and encourages other older people to get into gaming, or find other hobbies that keep them going.
“It doesn’t have to be video games necessarily. But it’s good to do something,” said Mori, who swam regularly until the age of 80 and still knits.
And while Mori said she understands concerns about video game addiction, particularly among young people, she pointed out that gaming may have helped many survive lockdowns during the coronavirus. “It’s safer to play at home, rather than going out,” she said.
For now, Mori is eagerly awaiting the release of the PlayStation 5, due to hit shops later this year.
“It’s seriously preoccupying me,” she said. “I want one. I really do.”

‘Are you saying Trump never lies?’: reporters quiz McEnany over White House Twitter feud – video | Global- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Reporters have interrogated the White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, over Donald Trump’s feud with Twitter. ‘The president has clearly said things in these tweets that are not true. Do you acknowledge that?’ Jon Karl, of ABC News, said during the briefing. McEnany said she did not. Earlier, Trump signed an executive order aimed at limiting social media firms such as Facebook and Twitter from policing content on their sites. The executive order came days after Twitter put a warning on a false claim tweeted by the president

In video game stories, it’s often side quests that are most meaningful | Games – Blog – 10 minute

It is a narrative standard in role-playing adventure games: the hero is pitted against a Big Evil, who has a strategic or chaotic hunger to destroy the world we know. From Shinra’s greedy harvesting of the planet’s resources in Final Fantasy VII Remake to Ganondorf’s quest for power and destruction across more than 30 years of Legend of Zelda games, the stakes are always astronomically high.
But what really makes these fictional realms worth saving? Role-playing games need to offer more than a sequence of linked events toward a monumental finale. A world is made of people, not just objectives.
This is where side quests come in: the tiny stories that make the emotional texture of a journey richer and fuller. Whether we’re talking role-playing epics such as Final Fantasy and The Witcher, or indie adventures such as Night in the Woods and Iconoclasts, it is off the beaten path that the stories gain their power.

Side quests are not just portals to smaller adventures, they are demonstrations of kindness

Across a lifetime of playing video games, I think most often of these side quests: lost animals, medicine in need of delivering before the ingredients expire, underwear retrieved from a bedroom where it shouldn’t be, baby rats that must be fed every day, hiding a cursed fiance and his panicked bride in the nights before their wedding. All of these tiny stories are alleyways off the main drag of the quest, but ones I happily get lost down. I prefer a Cloud Strife who will stop to help a child in a slum find her lost cats to the one who would power through undeterred to his climactic battle. I prefer a Geralt who will gamely search for an old woman’s favourite frying pan or a Fallout 4 Sole Survivor who’ll assist a bunch of sailor robots as they launch their rusty ship for one last voyage.

Small fry … this humble pan forms the basis of a whole side mission in The Witcher 3. Photograph: Witcher 3
This is the kind of hero I would be, I think. I hope. I am interested in ways that we can play games and save worlds without violence, ways in which gameplay utilises curiosity, helpfulness and generosity as power in the place of a gun or a sword. Side quests are not just portals to smaller adventures, they are demonstrations of kindness.
In Paper Mario: the Thousand-Year Door, a starkly underrated RPG, we are invited to spend time keeping the ageing mayor of a village of Koopas company, or assembling a cake for a psychic who lives beneath the central town of Rogueport. These simple, transactional quests elevate the adventure, giving the world and its oddball creatures an independent life. And there is no rush: the princess will still be waiting in another castle when we are done.
The transgressive indie adventure Undertale turns the stuff of side quests into the main thrust of the game: talking to the monsters lets you pass them by safely. Rather than electing the simple input of violence, the game asks you to consider conversation and engagement instead, mercy as the ultimate display of heroism. In this way, every encounter becomes a tiny story of its own: a healing operation, a brief journey taken.
The first real side quest that impacted me profoundly when I was growing up was a classic within a classic. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, on the Nintendo 64, Kakariko Village. Upon arriving at the game’s first town, we are asked in simple terms by a stressed-out girl called Anju to help her find her chickens. She can’t go and get them herself because she can’t touch them – they’ll make her sick. So off you go. Though we have the burden of an entire kingdom on our young shoulders, a heavy sword, and an even heavier quest, we help her. We trek up behind the windmill, clamber over fences, thrash open boxes, and for a few minutes, we are just a child, running after chickens. In return, she gives us an empty glass bottle and sends us on our way.

Simple pleasures … there is more to life in Legend of Zelda than saving the world from Ganondorf. Photograph: Nintendo
The bottle, though not a weapon, becomes one of the most useful items in the entire game. Later, we use it to hold ingredients for medicine to help another citizen of Hyrule. It can hold potions, and milk, to heal us, too. The chickens weren’t even that hard to find.
In the shadow of huge plot devices like destiny and impending doom, it is important that adventure games give us the chance to yield to tiny, human interactions. We must be given space to heal the citizens of the world, as well as the world itself – to find beloved pets, gather ingredients, solve disputes. To put down your sword, and offer your hand instead.
