Twitter wants Clearview AI to remove photos of people it has scraped from its service – Blog – 10 minute

A hot potato: Twitter has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Clearview AI, a company notorious for creating a database of facial recognition profiles using photos scraped from public sources. The social giant wants all the data scraped from its service to be deleted, as it violates its policies for content usage.
Twitter recently demanded that Clearview AI remove the data it collected from the public profiles of its users, after news broke that the latter had been scraping photos from the service for years and selling facial recognition software to law enforcement.
Clearview AI has been flying under the radar in a sea of apps and services, but an investigation from the New York Times revealed that Clearview has managed to gather more than 3 billion photos from big online platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and even Venmo, which have been used by the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and 600 other agencies from around the world as a means to quickly identify suspects.
The New York Times says in its report that Clearview AI will “end privacy as we know it,” and they may not be mistaken.
The way the service works is that you upload a photo of a person you’re looking for and the app will use scour through its huge photo database to find a match using AI. Since these were scraped from many online profiles, the search has a chance of yielding a full name, an email address, and other details.

It’s worth noting that at least for now, the service isn’t available for the general public, but there’s plenty of speculation among investors that it may well be in the near future.
Services like Facebook offer an option that prevents your profile from appearing in search engine results, which means it won’t be scraped by Clearview AI. Still, if someone took a picture that includes you and uploaded it somewhere online, that has a chance of being scraped as well. A recent court fight between hiQ Labs and Linkedin set a precedent that scraping public online data doesn’t violate any law.
Interestingly, Clearview AI has updated its privacy policy to allow anyone to request the removal of any content it has from your online profiles. The catch is that in order to do that you have to provide a “name, a headshot and a photo of a government-issued ID to facilitate the processing of your request.” Furthermore, there’s no guarantee that they’ll honor your request, which is more worrying.
Between Chinese tech companies that are apparently shaping UN facial recognition standards and companies like Clearview AI, law enforcement sees big potential in these tools to fight crime, but regulators are worried they open up a new avenue of abuse. Senator Ed Markey recently sent a letter to Clearview AI CEO, Hoan Ton-That, where he noted that “any technology with the ability to collect and analyze individuals’ biometric information has alarming potential to impinge on the public’s civil liberties and privacy.”
The senator is concerned that the service “is capable of fundamentally dismantling Americans’ expectation that they can move, assemble, or simply appear in public without being identified.” He asked the company to list its customers and explain if its employees have access to the images uploaded in the database, as well as how it complies with Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Twitter is rolling out emoji reactions for direct messages – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: There are plenty of areas where Twitter needs fixing, but the latest feature being added isn’t what you’d call a high priority. The platform is rolling out support for users to add Facebook/iMessage-like reactions to direct messages.
Research engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who is prolific when it comes to revealing social media features before their launch, discovered that Twitter was testing DM reactions last year, and now it’s coming to all users on the web, iOS, and Android.

— Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) 16 October 2019

The reactions are similar to what you’d find on Facebook, with laughing, shocked, sad, heart, and thumbs-up options. There’s also a flame emoji and, instead of an angry face, Twitter has included a thumbs down.
Twitter’s Help Center site explains that the emoji reactions can easily be added to a Direct Message—both text and media attachments. “To add a reaction, hover over the message and click the reaction button (heart and plus icon), or double tap on the message and pick an emoji from the pop-up.”

Say more with new emoji reactions for Direct Messages!
To add a reaction, click the ❤️➕ icon that appears when you hover over the message on web or double tap the message on mobile and select an emoji from the pop-up.
For more about DM reactions: https://t.co/sdMumGDBYl https://t.co/QxMVmGt8eY
— Twitter Support (@TwitterSupport) 22 January 2020

Users can undo reactions at any time, at which point they’ll be removed from the message for all participants. You can tap on a reaction to see who posted it, and all conversation participants receive a notification whenever a new reaction is added to a message. You can even add reactions to messages that have been sitting in your DMs for years.
If you happen to be using an older version of the iOS or Android Twitter app that doesn’t support message reactions, they will be displayed as text-based messages.
While some would argue that Twitter should be dealing with the trolls and bots populating the service, the Reactions feature will certainly be useful for those messages where you’d rather not give an actual reply.

Twitter says it fixed a glaring issue that allowed ads to target neo-Nazis – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: A BBC experiment found that advertisers could use certain keywords to serve ads on Twitter to groups of people that show interest in sensitive topics that have to do with hate groups and discriminatory terms. Twitter says it has fixed the issue, and promises to continue enforcing its ad policies in the future, “including inappropriate content targeting minors.”
Between all the security issues that expose your personal data, Twitter has an even bigger fight to clean its platform of hate speech and trolls.
Earlier today, Twitter apologized after the BBC found it’s possible to use the company’s ad targeting tools in ways that break the rules for what content is acceptable on the platform. The social giant also scrambled to fix the issue, and a spokesperson explained that it was the result of not properly applying existing policies that are supposed to prevent such an abuse.
The first of the BBC experiments was set up to target Twitter users based on specific keywords like “white supremacists,” “anti-gay,” “transphobic,” and “neo-Nazi.” Twitter policies normally prohibit targeting sensitive categories like these, or anything that has to do with religious affiliation, racial and ethnic origins, medical issues or sex life.

The news organization ran the ad for approximately two hours for a total cost of about $5, which resulted in 37 people seeing and two people clicking on the ad. The second experiment targeted users between the ages of 13 and 24 with keywords like “bulimia” and “anorexia,” which was seen by 255 people and clicked on by 14 before being taken down by the BBC.
Interestingly, Twitter’s tools showed that using the term “neo-Nazi” had the potential to target an audience of around 67,000 to 81,000 people in the UK alone. Using “islamophobia” in an ad campaign showed an even higher potential of 93,000 to 114,000 people. But more importantly, it shows that Twitter collects a lot of data on its users, which could be abused by advertisers that target people with extremist and otherwise questionable views.
Twitter says it has a list of “sensitive words” that is constantly being updated to prevent advertisers from using them to target users based on those terms, and that this was an instance where it was not enough to prevent an abuse. The social giant has a complete ban on political ads, so at least there’s no way to abuse those.

Twitter drops Grindr from ad network over ‘GDPR breaches’ | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Twitter has suspended Grindr from its ad platform after a study claimed the dating app was passing significant amounts of private information to advertisers without explicit consent from users.
The study, carried out by the Norwegian Consumer Council (NCC), found that the online advertising industry was “systematically breaking the law”, transmitting personal data and tracking users in ways that are banned under the GDPR, the EU’s data law.

Of the 10 apps examined in depth by the NCC, which included period trackers and dating apps, Grindr stood out as being significantly problematic. The council said the app had such a “vague” privacy policy that it was probably in breach of GDPR, particularly concerning how the company tried to excuse itself from misuse of data by advertising partners.
Grindr told users that they needed to check with partners to find out how their data was used, but only named one such partner, MoPub, an ad network owned by Twitter. MoPub, in turn, lists more than 160 partners to which data may be passed.
“By stating that it does ‘not control the use of these tracking technologies’, and by asking users to read the privacy policies of any third-party companies that may receive personal data, Grindr is attempting to shift accountability for the advertising technologies that it is using away from itself,” the report concluded.
Max Schrems, founder of the European privacy non-profit organisation Noyb, told the NCC: “Every time you open an app like Grindr, advertisement networks get your GPS location, device identifiers and even the fact that you use a gay dating app. This is an insane violation of users’ EU privacy rights.”
Following the publication of the report, the council filed formal complaints of GDPR breaches against Grindr and MoPub, as well as four other ad tech firms.
Twitter said it would investigate the allegations saying Grindr provided data with inadequate consent, and suspended the app from MoPub. “We are currently investigating this issue to understand the sufficiency of Grindr’s consent mechanism,” Twitter said. “In the meantime, we have disabled Grindr’s MoPub account.”
Every app assessed had some privacy problems, however, leading the report’s authors to conclude that the problem was endemic. “Because of the scope of tests, size of the third parties that were observed receiving data and popularity of the apps, we regard the findings from these tests to be representative of widespread practices.”
The tests, which were carried out on Android devices, showed that every single app shared data with third parties. Eight of the 10 also shared data with Google’s ad service, while nine of them shared data with Facebook.
“We urge data protection authorities to enforce the GDPR,” the NCC concluded, “and for advertisers and publishers to look toward alternative digital advertising methods that respect fundamental rights.”
Finn Myrstad, the NCC’s digital policy director, told the New York Times, which first reported the study: “Any consumer with an average number of apps on their phone – anywhere between 40 and 80 apps – will have their data shared with hundreds or perhaps thousands of actors online.”
A Grindr spokesperson said: “User privacy and data security is, and always will be, a high priority for Grindr. Examples of this commitment include sharing our revised privacy policy in its entirety to every Grindr user in order to gain their consent and provide even greater transparency about Grindr’s privacy-forward practices.
“In addition, Grindr is currently implementing an enhanced consent management platform with OneTrust to provide users with additional in-app control regarding their personal data. As always, Grindr users have individual control over exactly what information they choose to provide in their profiles. We have also further enhanced our information security policy as part of our ongoing commitment to safeguard our users’ data.
“So while we reject a number of the report’s assumptions and conclusions, we welcome the opportunity to be a small part in a larger conversation about how we can collectively evolve the practices of mobile publishers and continue to provide users with access to an option of a free platform. As the data protection landscape continues to change, our commitment to user privacy remains steadfast.”

Oh what a night! Twitter brings £1,000 worth of orders to empty bookshop | Books- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

An independent bookshop that failed to sell a single book on a rainy day this week has been inundated with customers after publishing pictures of its empty aisles on social media.
The Petersfield Bookshop in Hampshire sent a melancholy tweet revealing it had not welcomed one paying customer, probably for the first time in its 100-year history.
Within a few hours the fantasy and science fiction author Neil Gaiman retweeted the post to his millions of followers and, as if by magic, orders came flooding in from across the globe.
The unlikely turnaround began when the bookshop – which specialises in antiquarian publications, maps and secondhand books – experienced a particularly miserable Tuesday.
Robert Sansom, who has worked at the shop for 13 years, hammered out the gloomy tweet.

“Tumbleweed,” the tweet read. “Not a single book sold today … £0.00”. Sansom thought nothing of it but was amazed when £1,000 worth of orders came in overnight.
“It was really touching,” he said. “People have been so kind. This will really make a difference. There are slow days, but it was a really unusual day for us to have not sold any books – no one wanted to come out because of Storm Brendan.”
John Westwood, 56, whose family owns the store, said: “It blows me away. I don’t understand social media because I’m old-fashioned, but when Rob called me and told me the figures, I was gobsmacked.”
By Wednesday the original post had been retweeted more than 5,000 times and received more than 10,000 likes.
The shop put out a further, more cheerful tweet: “What a night! We have been completely overwhelmed in a good way. We have 1,100 new followers. We have loads of online book orders. We have over 300 messages, many asking after books. We will answer all as soon as we can, please bear with us. Thank you all so much!”

Grindr and Twitter criticised over ‘out of control’ data-sharing practices- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Dating app Grindr and Mopub (Twitter’s ad platform) are facing a barrage of criticism today over their data sharing practices as part of an investigation by the nonprofit Norwegian Consumer Council (NCC), which describes their data handling as ‘out of control’.
The popular dating app has been named and shamed alongside five advertising firms over their data procedures, with ATT’s AppNexus, OpenX, AdColony and Smaato also in the dock.
The body found that the companies were guilty of unlawfully sharing user data, exposing both businesses to the possibility of large fines of up to 4% of global turnover if found to have breached EU general data protection regulation.
Outlining their findings the NCC wrote: “None of the apps provided the information necessary for the consumer to make an informed choice when launching the apps. Furthermore, we found a near-complete lack of in-app settings to regulate or prevent the sharing of personal data with third parties … If the consumer does not want their apps to transmit personal data to commercial third parties, the only option is often not to install the apps in the first place.”
Grindr, for instance, is accused of passing on personal details such as GPS coordinates, IP addresses and sexual orientation to advertising partners without offering the ability to opt-out, prompting Twitter to disable Grind’s MoPub account while it investigates the ‘sufficiency’ of its consent procedures.
For its part, Grindr has said it is already in process of ‘implementing an enhanced consent management platform’ to address concerns.

Twitter planning Bitcoin payments as tips on its platform – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Twitter planning Bitcoin payments as tips on o. Twitter is considering a feature that would allow users to tip one another – in Bitcoins though. The Information reports that the micro-blogging platform is working on implementing a new payment feature to let people send money to each other.
It is not yet clear whether the Twitter tipping feature would integrate with Jack Dorsey’s other company, Square, which is a financial services, merchant services aggregator, and mobile payment company based in San Francisco.
Dorsey has made absolutely no secret of his love of Bitcoin over the years.
NewsBTC has reported on the Twitter CEO opining that Bitcoin will one day be the currency of the internet and his company Square integrating cryptocurrency payments.
“Dorsey has been a major investor in the Bitcoin micropayments solution Lightning Network,” said the report.
Dorsey will move to Africa for three-six months this year to “define the future”.
“Sad to be leaving the continent for now. Africa will define the future (especially the bitcoin one!). Not sure where yet, but I’ll be living here for 3-6 months mid-2020. Grateful I was able to experience a small part,” said the Twitter CEO.
Dorsey has also hired Bitcoin developers for his payments company.
He is an advocate of digital currency bitcoin but he also says it is “not functional as a currency”.

NicheNet – a Twitter for cells developed by scientists- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Computational biologists led by Prof. Yvan Saeys (VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research) developed a new bioinformatics method to better study communication between cells. This method, called NicheNet, helps researchers to gain insight into how the gene expression of cells is regulated by interacting cells. NicheNet has a broad range of potential applications in fields like immunology and tumor biology, and was already successfully used by the collaborating group of Prof. Martin Guilliams (VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research).
In multicellular organisms cells don’t function on their own, but they produce signaling molecules that influence gene expression in interacting cells. This intercellular communication plays an important role in many biological processes, such as the development and functioning of cells. Studying intercellular communication is not only important to understand fundamental biology, but also to gain insights into diseases like cancer. Interactions between cancer cells and other cells in the microenvironment of the tumor are crucial for its growth.
An example of a process in which intercellular communication is essential, is the differentiation of macrophages, a type of immune cell. This process is affected by other cell types in the environment, or ‘niche’, of the macrophage.
Researchers from the group of Martin Guilliams (VIB-Ghent University), who work in close collaboration with the Saeys lab, wanted to study this process for Kupffer cells, a macrophage in the liver blood stream. They generated a lot of gene expression data of all cells involved.
“But, using this type of data to unravel how cells communicate is not a trivial task”, says Yvan Saeys. “We needed to develop a new sophisticated algorithm to tackle this problem.”
Machine learning for talking cells
Guided by post-doc Wouter Saelens and Yvan Saeys, PhD student Robin Browaeys started developing such a new method to analyze how cells might signal each other.
Browaeys explains: “Our idea was to make use of the enormous amount of available knowledge on intercellular signaling that was acquired over the years, and use this knowledge to find out which intercellular communication processes are going on in the data we had. To do this, we had to apply several machine learning and statistical techniques, including network algorithms that are also used to analyze social networks, for example.”
Saelens summarizes: “In essence, you can compare our newly developed method, NicheNet, with a hypothetical biologist who not only knows everything that is already published about intercellular communication, but who can also apply all this knowledge on complex, big datasets. Making reasonable predictions on intercellular communication is something that would have required weeks of literature study in the past, but this can now be done with the push of a button.”
A first test case for NicheNet was the Kupffer cell niche data generated by the Guilliams lab. Researchers from that lab were able to experimentally validate some of the signals that NicheNet predicted. “Thanks to NicheNet, we looked into factors that we would not have thought about ourselves”, confirms Martin Guilliams. “For us, NicheNet was an essential tool to help unravel the Kupffer cell niche”.
“In addition to the Kupffer cell story, we have also been applying NicheNet to investigate cell-cell communication in the tumor micro-environment”, adds Saeys. “We used NicheNet on single-cell data that was published earlier, but we are now working on novel single-cell datasets generated by collaborating research groups. How different types of treatment affect the cellular interactions within the tumor microenvironment, and how this influences the tumor, are some of the questions we are trying to address with NicheNet.”
These different applications illustrate the value of NicheNet for generating novel hypotheses about how cells communicate in fundamental biological processes and diseases.

Twitter will soon let you decide who can reply to your tweets – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: Twitter is introducing a new feature that will allow people to decide who, if anyone, can reply to their tweets. The platform already allows users to hide replies to tweets, but the new tool adds more control over what they see and should help address the long-running troll problem.
Suzanne Xie, Twitter’s director of product management, revealed the new reply options at CES. They will be tested in the first quarter of this year before being launched later in 2020, and consist of four settings that users can select:

Global – Anyone can respond.

Group – Allows replies from a user’s follows, or anyone mentioned in the tweet.

Panel – Allow replies from people mentioned.

Statement – No replies are allowed.

“We want to help people feel safe participating in the conversation on Twitter,” the company said.

Being able to prevent any replies at all to a tweet is certainly interesting, and you can expect plenty of people to use the option. When asked about the possibility of limiting replies leading to misinformation going unchallenged, Xie said the company is exploring the option of allowing quote retweets.
For many years now, Twitter has promised to do more to deal with the harassment and bullying that is rife on the platform. In July, it started removing tweets that “include language that dehumanizes others on the basis of religion.”
In December 2018, an Amnesty International report that examined the abuse of women on the site led to a short-seller labeling it “the Harvey Weinstein of social media.”
Xie also announced new conversational features were coming to Twitter in the coming months, including threading, with the aim of putting an entire conversation “on one screen.” The company is also upgrading its topics and lists discovery features.

Twitter to introduce ability to stop people replying to tweets | Technology- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Twitter users will be able to prevent others from replying to their tweets, the company has announced, in a move it hopes will prevent antisocial behaviour on the platform while improving the quality of conversation for all.
But the new features could undercut the social network’s ambition to prevent the spread of misinformation. It is unclear how Twitter intends to reconcile the two goals.
In a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Twitter’s director of product management, Suzanne Xie, said the company would be introducing a setting for “conversation participants” at some point this year. It will let tweeters choose from four options, on a per-tweet level:

“Global”: as today, anyone can reply to a global tweet.

“Group”: only people who you follow can reply, as well as anyone mentioned in the tweet.

“Panel”: only people mentioned in the tweet can reply.

“Statement”: no one can reply.

The company plans to begin experimenting with the features in the first quarter of 2020, with a goal to introducing them globally by the end of the year.
“Getting ratioed, getting dunked on, the dynamics that happen that we think aren’t as healthy are definitely part of … our thinking about this,” Xie said, according to the Verge.
The proposal could solve some of the problems that have given Twitter a reputation as a “toxic” platform. Being “ratioed” – a slang term for when a tweet receives more replies than likes or retweets – can be an unpleasant experience. Similarly, a conversation between friends can be interrupted by strangers, potentially turning a friendly chat into something more antagonistic.
But it also appears to go against Twitter’s policies on misinformation. Unlike Facebook, Twitter does not have a fact-checking programme and it only bans narrow misinformation aimed at manipulating or interfering with elections. Instead, the company argues that “Twitter’s open and real-time nature is a powerful antidote to the spreading of all types of false information”, as its then head of public policy, Colin Crowell, put it in 2017.
“Journalists, experts and engaged citizens tweet side by side correcting and challenging public discourse in seconds,” he said. “These vital interactions happen on Twitter every day, and we’re working to ensure we are surfacing the highest quality and most relevant content and context first.”
The new features would instead allow purveyors of false information to simply mark their tweets as “statements”, preventing those “vital interactions” from occurring. A similar feature that allows users to hide replies to their tweets is already being used by scammers on the social network to remove replies that fact-check their lies.
In response to such fears, Xie suggested that the ability to quote-tweet such misinformation may remain intact but acknowledged it was “something we’re going to be watching really closely as we experiment”.
