Tesla’s stock surpasses $500, total value now exceeds Ford and GM’s combined – Blog – 10 minute

In context: Despite a few setbacks over the years, Tesla is now doing quite well for itself. In 2019, it managed to ship an impressive (by Tesla standards) 367,500 vehicles, and it’s rapidly opening up new “gigafactories” throughout the world. If that wasn’t enough for the electric carmaker, though, there’s more good news for it to boast about now.
Yesterday, Tesla’s stock surpassed $500 per share, which has pushed the EV maker’s total valuation to roughly $94.6 billion as of writing. That’s an astounding figure for such a comparatively small car company and one that Tesla is probably pretty pleased with. Notably, it also makes Tesla America’s most valuable car company (for now).
The $94.6 billion number is made even more impressive when it’s put into the appropriate context. As other outlets have noted, Tesla’s total valuation is higher than not just that of other carmakers, but also the combined value of some such companies — Ford and GM, for example. The two automotive giants are, as of now, worth $36.64 billion and $50 billion, respectively.

Of course, as great as this news will be for Tesla’s executives and stockholders, there’s no guarantee this rapid stock price growth will be sustainable in the long term. Tesla has seen quite a bit of success and stability over the past few months in particular, but the company’s past is still troubled, especially where production is concerned. We’ll have to wait and see whether those troubles will rear their heads again in the future.
For now, though, Tesla (and anyone who’s purchased its stock) gets to enjoy the fruit of its labor. For our part, we look forward to seeing how Tesla’s stock performs over the next few months. Will it rise further and take the company beyond the $100 million ceiling or will it fall back down to earth? Only time will tell.

Explorium reveals $19.1M in total funding for machine learning data discovery platform – gpgmail

Explorium, a data discovery platform for machine learning models, received a couple of unannounced funding rounds over the last year — a $3.6 million seed round last September and a $15.5 million Series A round in March. Today, it made both of these rounds public.

The seed round was led by Emerge with participation of F2 Capital. The Series A was led by Zeev Ventures with participation from the seed investors. The total raised is $19.1 million.

The company founders, who have a data science background, found that it was problematic to find the right data to build a machine learning model. Like most good startup founders confronted with a problem, they decided to solve it themselves by building a data discovery platform for data scientists.

CEO and co-founder, Maor Shlomo says that the company wanted to focus on the quality of the data because not much work has been done there. “A lot of work has been invested on the algorithmic part of machine learning, but the algorithms themselves have very much become commodities. The challenge now is really finding the right data to feed into those algorithms,” Sholmo told gpgmail.

It’s a hard problem to solve, so they built a kind of search engine that can go out and find the best data wherever it happens to live, whether it’s internally or in an open data set, public data or premium databases. The company has partnered with thousands of data sources, according to Schlomo, to help data scientist customers find the best data for their particular model.

“We developed a new type of search engine that’s capable of looking at the customers data, connecting and enriching it with literally thousands of data sources, while automatically selecting what are the best pieces of data, and what are the best variables or features, which could actually generate the best performing machine learning model,” he explained.

Shlomo sees a big role for partnerships, whether that involves data sources or consulting firms, who can help push Explorium into more companies.

Explorium has 63 employees spread across offices in Tel Aviv, Kiev and San Francisco. It’s still early days, but Sholmo reports “tens of customers.” As more customers try to bring data science to their companies, especially with a shortage of data scientists, having a tool like Explorium could help fill that gap.

HackerOne just closed a new round of funding that brings its total funding to $110 million – gpgmail

HackerOne, the seven-year-old, San Francisco-based company that mediates between hackers and companies interested in testing their online vulnerabilities, has raised $36.4 million in Series D funding that brings the company’s total funding to date to  $110 million.

The deal was led by Valor Equity Partners, which was joined by the company’s earlier investors, including Benchmark, New Enterprise Associates, Dragoneer Investment Group and EQT Ventures.

The company says it now works with more than 1,500 customers that use the company to help find critical security weaknesses so they can address them before players with nefarious intentions find and exploit them. Among the list of companies that pay for its help are Google, Intel, Airbnb, Alibaba, General Motors, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

As we reported late last month, HackerOne is also working with Facebook and its partners on the Libra cryptocurrency project; specifically, it’s developing a bug bounty program for applications built on its blockchain.

With data breaches becoming an everyday occurrence for all kinds of businesses — often caused by flaws in payment systems but also sometimes the simple result of poor cyber hygiene — it’s no surprise that HackerOne, along with competitors like Synack and BugCrowd, are becoming more central to many more companies.

With more outfits under attack than ever before, the rewards that hackers can earn is also on the rise. While each client determines what it will pay for a job, with more complicated issues typically promising higher bounties (HackerOne refers to each task as “piece work”), the average bounty Hacker One paid for critical vulnerabilities has increased to $3,384 in the last year, a 48% increase over the prior year’s average.

The company meanwhile says that six hackers on its platform have now earned more than $1 million each in lifetime earnings. The first of these, a 19-year-old, self-taught hacker from Argentina, became the first person to earn more than $1 million in bounty awards from HackerOne back in March. He has reported more than 1,670 valid unique vulnerabilities to companies, including Verizon Media Company, Twitter, WordPress parent Automattic.

Since then, five more hackers have joined the million-dollar club, says HackerOne.

HackerOne works with hundreds of thousands of individuals in service to its customers. At an event hosted by this editor a couple of years ago, HackerOne CEO Marten Mickos suggested that a fair number are teenagers, too. Said Mickos at the time: “Some [of the hackers we work with] are teenage boys and girls today, and they’ll write us and say their life has changed. They bought an apartment for their mother, or they bought a motorbike for themselves. They show up on social media in their HackerOne hoodies. That’s their identity. It’s shaping them into respectable, contributing citizens who take responsibility for the world. It’s amazing to see how these young people stand up when we adults have been screwing up this world.”
