Deleted an Important Document by Mistake? Microsoft’s New File Recovery Tool Might Help | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from The Sun UK.

Microsoft has quietly launched a new utility service – Windows File Recovery for Windows 10.
While this service may be an important boon for users who have been struggling for years to use an application to quickly and efficiently recover permanently deleted files, it comes with a rather large catch.
The entire utility, Windows File Recovery, as of right now runs only on the Window’s Command shell, and it’s only available from the Microsoft Store.
Windows File Recovery. Sourced from Thurrott.
“Accidentally deleted an important file? Wiped clean your hard drive? Unsure of what to do with corrupted data? Windows File Recovery can help recover your personal data,” the store listing for the app states.

“For photos, documents, videos, and more. Windows File Recovery supports many file types to help ensure that your data is not permanently lost. Recovering from a camera or SD card? Try Signature mode, which expands beyond NTFS recovery and caters to your storage device needs. Let this app be your first choice for helping to find what you need from your hard drive, SSD, USB drive, or memory cards.”
While it offers a robust service, the use of Command may be a turn-off for many entry-level or casual users, but with a bit of tinkering the service may just be what users need to save their important files.
You can find more details about Windows File Recovery from the Microsoft Support website, which notes that the tool operates in three different modes.
Windows File Recovery – 3 Operation Modes
This mode uses the Master File Table (MFT), a database in which information about every file and directory on your PC’s NT File System is stored (NTFS), to locale lost files on the drives.
The NTFS is the system with which Windows computers use to store and retrieve data at the user’s command. Default mode works well when the MFT and file segments are present.
This mode does not require the MFT but still needs segments to locate data.
Segments are summaries of file information that NTFS stores in the MFT. Information such as name, date, size, type, and the cluster/allocation unit index of certain files.
This mode, probably the most casual-friendly but also least powerful, only requires that the data that is being looked for is present somewhere on the drives. Signature Mode searches for specific file types.
The problem is that this mode doesn’t work with small files. To recover a file on an external storage device, such as a USB drive, you can only use Signature mode.

Victoria Police admits officers trialled Clearview AI facial recognition tool – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Victoria Police has admitted to trialling the controversial facial recognition tool Clearview AI after previously denying that officers had used the software.
Documents released under freedom of information this week confirm at least five police officers signed up to use the software as part of a trial from late 2019.
The FOI request was made by IT consultant and analyst Justin Warren after the force declined to confirm its use of the software following news reports earlier this year.
Victoria Police was one of 2200 law enforcement agencies globally outed by BuzzFeed News for having had personnel use Clearview AI at one point or another.
Leaked records showed that more than five users had run more than 10 searches using the tool, which is capable of matching images with billions of others scraped from the internet.
FOI documents reveal correspondence between Clearview AI and several officers, including two intelligence analysts, a detective senior constable and sergeant who were invited to sign up.
The emails pitch Clearview as a “Google search for faces”, with officers able to upload photos to “instantly get results from mugshots, social media, and other publicly available sources”.
“Our technology combines the most accurate facial identification software worldwide with the single biggest proprietary database of facial images to help you find the suspects you’re looking for,” one of the emails reads.
Once the six officers signed up, they were also encouraged to “search a lot” and refer other colleagues to sign up to the tool.
“Investigators who do 100+ Clearview searches have the best chances of successfully solving crimes with Clearview in our experience,” another email reads.
“It’s the best way to thoroughly test the technology.”
The documents do not indicate how many of the officers actually used the software to perform searches, though one user applied to have their password changed after Clearview’s client list was exposed in a data breach.
Several officers did not take up invitations from Clearview to sign up.
In FOI correspondence, Victoria Police said the documents identified related to a “trial that was completed by the [Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET)] which has now ceased”
“The trial involved open-source images uploaded to the system for testing purposes,” the force said.
“The use of ClearView AI is not endorsed by Victoria Police. ClearView AI has not been utilised for investigative purposes at Victoria Police.”
Victoria Police stressed that “no commercial or formal agreements are in place with the organisation as the trial was conducted at no charge”.
“iFACE is the official Victoria Police facial recognition system and is used as an investigative tool only.”
The Australian Federal Police has also been forced to admit in recent months that nine of its officers piloted Clearview AI to test the tool’s suitability for use in child exploitation investigations.
It has similarly stressed that the platform has not been adopted as “an enterprise product” and that it has “not entered into any formal procurement arrangements”.
A number of large tech firms have recently followed IBM’s lead and committed to stop offering facial recognition software in the US.
Amazon Web Services and Microsoft will block police use of facial recognition for a year while new laws there are developed.

NBN Co is testing an online appointment rescheduling tool – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

NBN Co will test a new online booking tool that allows end users to reschedule inconveniently-timed technician appointments.
The tool is designed to automate – and therefore bypass – a bottleneck in the process that emerged due to COVID-19, namely the lack of contact centre agents, particularly on the RSP side, that can reschedule appointments.
“Due to the impact of COVID-19, there is reduced contact centre capacity across NBN Co and RSPs, and NBN Co has observed an increase in the number of appointments being rescheduled,” NBN Co said in documentation [pdf] released late Thursday last week.
“NBN Co is currently developing a new automated process through which contracted end users will be able to reschedule appointments via an online booking tool.
“It is anticipated that this new process will assist in easing current capacity constraints when rescheduling appointments.”
iTnews understands that three RSPs have signed up to a trial of the online booking tool so far.
The trial is expected to run through to the middle of July, which – if successful – could allow the tool to be put into production relatively quickly, and therefore available to most end users.
The tool can be used for technician appointments made to connect to the NBN and for “trouble tickets” (where additional work needs to be performed before a connection can be made).
End users will be sent a link to the online booking tool via an SMS, and will have two calendar days to respond to it.
“The contracted end user will be able to provide information regarding preferences for the rescheduling of the eligible appointment,” NBN Co said.
“NBN Co will reschedule the appointment using the information provided.”
Pre COVID-19, it is unclear if this kind of system would have been palatable to industry, given it involves the wholesaler communicating directly with end users about appointment times.
However, a number of RSPs have had contact centre capacity issues in the COVID period, forcing them to digitise processes and pursue automated workarounds in order to continue to respond to customers.
NBN Co’s online rescheduling tool is intended to complete a manual step that would normally be facilitated by the RSP, via their contact centres.
In addition to facilitating changes for customers that can’t be home for an initial appointment, it is also understood the tool can be used by a customer to preference times for an appointment that needs to be rescheduled because it was missed by the NBN contractor assigned to it.

Elon Musk-backed OpenAI to release text tool it called dangerous | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

OpenAI, the machine learning nonprofit co-founded by Elon Musk, has released its first commercial product: a rentable version of a text generation tool the organisation once deemed too dangerous to release.
Dubbed simply “the API”, the new service lets businesses directly access the most powerful version of GPT-3, OpenAI’s general purpose text generation AI.
The tool is already a more than capable writer. Feeding an earlier version of the opening line of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four – “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen” – the system recognises the vaguely futuristic tone and the novelistic style, and continues with: “I was in my car on my way to a new job in Seattle. I put the gas in, put the key in, and then I let it run. I just imagined what the day would be like. A hundred years from now. In 2045, I was a teacher in some school in a poor part of rural China. I started with Chinese history and history of science.”
Now, OpenAI wants to put the same power to more commercial uses such as coding and data entry. For instance, if, rather than Orwell, the prompt is a list of the names of six companies and the stock tickers and foundation dates of two of them, the system will finish it by filling in the missing details for the other companies.
It will mark the first commercial uses of a technology which stunned the industry in February 2019 when OpenAI first revealed its progress in teaching a computer to read and write. The group was so impressed by the capability of its new creation that it was initially wary of publishing the full version, warning that it could be misused for ends the nonprofit had not foreseen.
“We need to perform experimentation to find out what they can and can’t do,” said Jack Clark, the group’s head of policy, at the time. “If you can’t anticipate all the abilities of a model, you have to prod it to see what it can do. There are many more people than us who are better at thinking what it can do maliciously.”
Now, that fear has lessened somewhat, with almost a year of GPT-2 being available to the public. Still, the company says: “The field’s pace of progress means that there are frequently surprising new applications of AI, both positive and negative.
“We will terminate API access for obviously harmful use-cases, such as harassment, spam, radicalisation, or astroturfing [masking who is behind a message]. But we also know we can’t anticipate all of the possible consequences of this technology, so we are launching today in a private beta [test version] rather than general availability.”
OpenAI was founded with a $1bn (£0.8bn) endowment in 2015, backed by Musk and others, “to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity”. Musk has since left the board, but remains as a donor.

Over 1 Million South Africans Use Tempemail Department’s COVID-19 HealthCheck Tool | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

South Africa’s Tempemail Department of Health (NDoH) has confirmed that over 1 million South Africans have already used their COVID-19 digital self-assessment tool called HealthCheck.
The HealthCheck self-assessment tool allows for early detection, mapping and management of COVID-19 cases using USSD and the official COVID-19 WhatsApp Service (COVID-19 CONNECT).
The tool comes at a crucial moment in the South African government’s COVID-19 response – when certain aspects of the country’s lockdown have been relaxed and more responsibility is being placed on individuals to ensure their own health when going back to work or school and engaging in outdoor activity and other areas of public life.
Members of the public will be able to use HealthCheck to self-assess their COVID-19 risk by completing a few simple questions. Based on their answers and their symptoms or exposure history, they will be classified as Low, Moderate or High risk and suggested actions or guidelines will be recommended based on this classification. Actions could include remote medical advice or a suggestion to visit a nearby healthcare facility.

HealthCheck also issues receipts after a user completes their pre-screening self-assessment, providing them with an endorsed declaration of their risk level with a validity period of 24 hours. The digital receipts self-assessment result will see individuals fall into low risk (green), medium risk (orange) or high-risk (red) categories.
All users will get a receipt and those who get a low-risk result will be able to use the digital certificate for a period of 24 hours from being issued when entering spaces of public engagement. Based on guidelines provided by the NDoH, should the results of the self-check require further action, users will be guided to self-isolate, test or get emergency care.
Importantly, all data from HealthCheck will remain private and secure and will only be used by the NDoH and NICD to map possible infections or future outbreaks and input into epidemiological models to inform decision making on the national response to COVID-19.
HealthCheck is available on USSD for those without access to airtime or Internet, with network operators MTN, Telkom and Vodacom having made access to the USSD line free.
The USSD is available by dialling *134*832# where people are prompted to follow the menu instructions and answer a series of short questions.
The questions that are asked on the USSD line include location (province and town), age category, symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat), exposure to infected persons and acceptance of terms and conditions and confirmation that the NDoH can contact them.
The risk-assessment screening tool has also been added to the list of menu items on the NDoH’s COVID-19 Connect WhatsApp Helpline. The helpline, which has had over 6.2 million users since its launch on 18 March, is activated by messaging ‘hi’ to 0600123456.
The availability of HealthCheck on both platforms means that NICD and NDoH guidelines on self-isolation, testing or whether users should seek medical care will reach many more people during the current COVID-19 pandemic. It will also play an important role in taking the pressure off the country’s healthcare facilities whilst they are dealing with critical care of COVID-19 patients.

New USBCulprit Espionage Tool Steals Data From Air-Gapped Computers – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A Chinese threat actor has developed new capabilities to target air-gapped systems in an attempt to exfiltrate sensitive data for espionage, according to a newly published research by Kaspersky yesterday.
The APT, known as Cycldek, Goblin Panda, or Conimes, employs an extensive toolset for lateral movement and information stealing in victim networks, including previously unreported custom tools, tactics, and procedures in attacks against government agencies in Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos.
“One of the newly revealed tools is named USBCulprit and has been found to rely on USB media in order to exfiltrate victim data,” Kaspersky said. “This may suggest Cycldek is trying to reach air-gapped networks in victim environments or relies on physical presence for the same purpose.”

First observed by CrowdStrike in 2013, Cycldek has a long history of singling out defense, energy, and government sectors in Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, using decoy documents that exploit known vulnerabilities (e.g., CVE-2012-0158, CVE-2017-11882, CVE-2018-0802) in Microsoft Office to drop a malware called NewCore RAT.

Exfiltrating Data to Removable Drives

Kaspersky’s analysis of NewCore revealed two different variants (named BlueCore and RedCore) centered around two clusters of activity, with similarities in both code and infrastructure, but also contain features that are exclusive to RedCore — namely a keylogger and an RDP logger that captures details about users connected to a system via RDP.

“Each cluster of activity had a different geographical focus,” the researchers said. “The operators behind the BlueCore cluster invested most of their efforts on Vietnamese targets with several outliers in Laos and Thailand, while the operators of the RedCore cluster started out with a focus on Vietnam and diverted to Laos by the end of 2018.”
Both BlueCore and RedCore implants, in turn, downloaded a variety of additional tools to facilitate lateral movement (HDoor) and extract information (JsonCookies and ChromePass) from compromised systems.
Chief among them is a malware called USBCulprit that’s capable of scanning a number of paths, collecting documents with specific extensions (*.pdf;*.doc;*.wps;*docx;*ppt;*.xls;*.xlsx;*.pptx;*.rtf), and exporting them to a connected USB drive.

What’s more, the malware is programmed to copy itself selectively to certain removable drives so it can move laterally to other air-gapped systems each time an infected USB drive is inserted into another machine.
A telemetry analysis by Kaspersky found that the first instance of the binary dates all the way back to 2014, with the latest samples recorded at the end of last year.

The initial infection mechanism relies on leveraging malicious binaries that mimic legitimate antivirus components to load USBCulprit in what’s called DLL search order hijacking before it proceeds to collect the relevant information, save it in the form of an encrypted RAR archive, and exfiltrate the data to a connected removable device.
“The characteristics of the malware can give rise to several assumptions about its purpose and use cases, one of which is to reach and obtain data from air-gapped machines,” the researchers said. “This would explain the lack of any network communication in the malware and the use of only removable media as a means of transferring inbound and outbound data.”
Ultimately, the similarities and differences between the two pieces of malware are indicative of the fact that the actors behind the clusters are sharing code and infrastructure, while operating as two different offshoots under a single larger entity.
“Cycldek is an example of an actor that has broader capability than publicly perceived,” Kaspersky concluded. “While most known descriptions of its activity give the impression of a marginal group with sub-par capabilities, the range of tools and timespan of operations show that the group has an extensive foothold inside the networks of high-profile targets in Southeast Asia.”

A New Free Monitoring Tool to Measure Your Dark Web Exposure – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Last week, application security company ImmuniWeb released a new free tool to monitor and measure an organization’s exposure on the Dark Web.
To improve the decision-making process for cybersecurity professionals, the free tool crawls Dark Web marketplaces, hacking forums, and Surface Web resources such as Pastebin or GitHub to provide you with a classified schema of your data being offered for sale or leaked.
All you need to launch a Dark Web search is to enter your domain name.

The volume of stolen credentials on the Dark Web is booming

This week, over 26 million user records, including plaintext passwords, stolen from LiveJournal appeared on a Dark Web marketplace for as low as $35. The present week is likewise sadly marked with a compromise of 31 SQL databases (with 1.6 million rows of client data) from webshop owners.
There were 7,098 breaches reported in 2019, exposing over 15.1 billion records, a new worst year on record according to Risk Based Security report. Over 80% of data breaches within the hacking category involve usage of lost or stolen credentials, says the Data Breach Investigations Report 2020 by Verizon.
While over 21 million of stolen login credentials from Fortune 500 companies were readily available for sale in the Dark Web, according to ImmuniWeb report from 2019.

ImmuniWeb Dark Web monitoring tool in action

ImmuniWeb says that its Deep Learning AI technology is capable of distinguishing and removing duplicates and fake records, providing actionable and risk-scored data to its clients.
Here is an example of findings for a well-known financial institution:

Interestingly, for Gartner, there are over 100,000 mentions of detected login credentials and other data. However only 14% pass the AI-enabled validation, and as low as 466 were assigned a critical risk, potentially exposing apparently valid passwords from business-critical web resources:

In its press release, ImmuniWeb also mentions that on top visibility across 30 billion of stolen credentials, the free online test likewise detects and provides full technical details:

Phishing Campaigns
Domain Squatting
Trademark Infringement
Fake Social Networks Accounts

For example, for Yahoo, 131 ongoing phishing campaigns are targeting its clients, over 1,000 cybersquatted or typosquatted domains, many of which redirect to malware and ransomware doorways.
The hyperlinks to the malicious websites are displayed in a safe manner, with each entry also equipped with a screenshot to enable security professionals to assess the risk without the need to open dangerous web resources in their browser.
The tool is also available via a free API, making it an invaluable instrument for SOC security analysts to timely spot security emerging web security and privacy threats.
Last time we mentioned ImmuniWeb was among Top 10 Most Innovative Cybersecurity Companies after RSA 2020, and it seems that while successfully pursuing its growth track, their team doesn’t forget to contribute to the cybersecurity community. Good work!

New fuzzing tool picks up insecure USB driver code – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Two researchers say they have found a new approach to hunting for potentially serious bugs in the hardware drivers for the Universal Serial Bus interface, by emulating the peripherals in software.
Matthias Payer at the federal polytechnic school in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Hui Peng at Purdue University, United States, said [pdf] that they leveraged open-source components such as QEMU processor emulator to design a tool that’s low-cost and hardware independent, called USBFuzz.
USBFuzz is designed to be portable across operating systems, and minimal knowledge of the complex USB standard is required to use it.
Fuzzing is a technique used by security researchers to supply random data to programs and devices, to see how well they handle unexpected input.
USBFuzz emulates USB devices, feeding random data to their hardware device drivers.
The researchers said that as device drivers run directly in the kernel of operating systems, or in privileged processes, bugs in these are security critical.
However, USB peripherals are legion and the drivers for them are not exhaustively tested due to the difficulty in providing unexpected inputs from the device side, the researchers aid.
In their paper, the researchers say USBFuzz helped unmask a total of 26 new bugs in a USB Microsoft LifeCam VX-800 webcam driver.
Of these, 16 memory bugs were high impact security flaws in the Linux USB Core, USB Sound and network subsystems.
The researchers also found three driver bugs in Apple’s macOS, with two of the flaws unexpectedly rebooting the test system running in a virtual machine, and one freezing it completly.
They were also able to cause Blue Screens of Death (BSoD) faults in Windows 8 and Windows 10, and a single bug in a USB dongle driver for the most popular UNIX-like operating system in the world, FreeBSD.
USBFuzz build on prior efforts such as the hardware-based FaceDancer dumb fuzzer, and the Linux-only usb-fuzzer, and the researchers suggested that the emulator approach could be extended for testing other hardware device drivers as well.

NIC’s Cricket as an Assessment Tool makes e-learning ‘fun every day’- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Tempemail Informatics Centre (NIC) is not only supporting the state governments to adopt e-learning initiatives for continuity of academic curriculum for children amid coronavirus outbreak, but also making online classes more engrossing for kids.
NIC has developed a tool, Cricket as an Assessment Tool (CAAT), which uses gamification for teaching key subjects in school curriculum in Chhattisgarh. It not only makes students happy while studying but also attracts them to learn new things through innovative ways. A quiz is conducted in the form of a cricket match with the correctness of given answer being displayed in the form of assertive animation for a four, six or a wicket. There is multiplayer option wherein students can form teams and select their core subject to build a user profile.
Within a month of Cricket as an Assessment Tool’s launch, over 20 lakh students and 1.62 lakh teachers across Chhattisgarh have registered in the system voluntarily. NIC created academic cycle management system named “पढ़ाईतुहंरदुआर” which includes a wide range of modules such as online textbook delivery, video lectures, other teaching learning material (TLM) and reference material (videos, images, audios, PDFs), online classes, assignments, question bank, homework management and doubt clearance.
NIC says the tool is becoming more and more popular among the school children as they found it entertaining for their regular studies.
Notably, Covid19 has resulted in global lockdown of educational institutions, bringing the social life and learning of 72 per cent of the world’s student population to a virtual standstill.
The coronavirus outbreak has left staggering impact across all verticals of education sector including learning, daily nutrition, assessment having long lasting economic and social implications. Government of India is promoting e-learning initiatives by providing digital access to new and existing educational resources for students, teachers and professionals. A thrust is being given on using alternate channels to ensure the uninterrupted academic curriculum for children.
Similarly, NIC has provided e-governance solutions to Rajasthan as well. NIC has developed integrated ‘ShalaDarpan’ (http://rajshaladarpan.nic.in) that provides a coherent enterprise resource planning solution to Rajasthan’s state education department. The ShalaDarpan system handles online records of over 80 lakh students, over 4.15 lakh teachers/staff details of 65,000 government schools and provides operational support for effective decision making to education department administrators, head of schools, teachers, students and common citizens. It provides end to end solution starting from resource planning to daily operations and staff rationalisation.
In West Bengal, model assignments, model Q&A have been framed for all classes and made available in five languages (Bengali, English, Hindi, Urdu and Santhali) in BanglarShiksha portal (https://banglarshiksha.gov.in/) developed by NIC. It holds single data repository of 64,000 schools under grant in aid system, 1.4 crore students and 4.1 lakh teachers in West Bengal.
The portal facilitates live classroom through two TV channels daily with live phone-in facility and can be viewed offline with other e-learning content.
To help school children check the status of their scholarship and access e-learning content, NIC has created mShikshaMitra App (http://educationportal.mp.gov.in/) for Madhya Pradesh government. It has over five lakh downloads on Google Playstore. Teachers can report student enrolment details and access personal office records like service book, transfer orders, pay slip. Over 90,000 geo-tagged and geo-fenced photographs of school inspections are recorded every month in Madhya Pradesh using the camera-assistive GPS on smart-phones.
Indian school education system is one of the largest in the world comprising of over 1.5 million schools, over 9 million teachers and more than 26 million students. NIC has developed a robust, real time and a credible platform in the form of “Unified District Information system for Education” http://udiseplus.gov.in/), having complete information regarding school profile, physical facilities/equipment, teaching/non-teaching staff, enrollment, incentives, results, financials and safety standards.
