Optus runs mmWave 5G tests in Sydney – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Optus is testing 5G millimetre wave (mmWave) technology at four locations in Sydney, months after suggesting the technology could bring speeds in excess of 20Gbps.
The telco said in a statement that it has Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) approval to operate and test mmWave technology using the 26GHz band “at four locations in Sydney, including its Macquarie Park headquarters”.
As part of its tests, the company made a data call with technology partner Ericsson using mmWave customer premises equipment (CPE) made by Casa Systems.
It has also “run extensive testing at its lab facility in Sydney,” it said.
The telco reinforced its interest in using mmWave to serve the enterprise market in the first instance.
“MmWave 5G is the next step in unlocking mass productivity gains through a high-speed wireless communication layer,” Optus Networks managing director Lambo Kanagaratnam said.
“The enterprise market in particular is expected to gain from mmWave, with sectors such as autonomous manufacturing, mining and port operations all examples of industries that will considerably benefit from mmWave 5G and its capability to offer higher speeds.”
A mmWave spectrum auction is currently scheduled for early next year.

Twitter tests new voice tweeting feature – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Twitter is testing a new feature that will allow users to tweet using their voice, capturing up to 140 seconds of audio in a single tweet.
The feature will be available to a limited number of users on Apple’s iOS platform for now and be rolled out for more iOS users in the coming weeks, Twitter said in a blog post.
The micro-blogging platform said users will be able to create a voice tweet using a new “wavelengths” icon on the Tweet composer screen.
Social media companies including Twitter have long been under pressure to curb content such as abuse, harassment and misinformation on their platforms.
“We are working to incorporate additional monitoring systems ahead of bringing this to everyone,” Twitter spokeswoman Aly Pavela told Reuters.
“We’ll review any reported voice tweets in line with our rules, and take action, including labeling, as needed.”
Twitter, which adds labels to content containing manipulated or synthetic media, has also started adding fact-checking labels to certain types of coronavirus and election-related misinformation, including to a tweet by US President Donald Trump about mail-in ballots.
Last month, Twitter also added a warning to a tweet by Trump about Minneapolis protests that it said glorified violence.

Twitter Tests New Feature Recommending Users Read Articles Before Sharing Them | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Image sourced from Mission Statement Academy

Hugely popular social media platform, Twitter is now testing a new feature that recommends users read the entire news article before sharing it via retweeting. The company relayed this information via a tweet on their official support account.
The feature is being tested on Android devices and will prompt users asking if they’d like to open the article before they share it if they haven’t opened the article on Twitter.
“Sharing an article can spark conversation, so you may want to read it before you Tweet it,” the company says. “To help promote informed discussion, we’re testing a new prompt on Android, when you retweet an article that you haven’t opened on Twitter, we may ask if you’d like to open it first.”

Sharing an article can spark conversation, so you may want to read it before you Tweet it.
To help promote informed discussion, we’re testing a new prompt on Android –– when you Retweet an article that you haven’t opened on Twitter, we may ask if you’d like to open it first.
— Twitter Support (@TwitterSupport) June 10, 2020

This is in efforts, as Twitter says, to promote informed discussion and limit the spread of misinformed reactions that may lead to aggravated conversations between users that have been the norm in Twitter for many years.

I did read it, actually 🤔 pic.twitter.com/sqikMwu0pV
— Eric Tendian (@EricTendian) June 10, 2020

The above tweet is how the prompt appears for users. According to Twitter, the prompt will only appear when users attempt to retweet an article without having opened it on Twitter first. However, the prompt is still being tested and Android users may see the prompt even when they have already read an article.
It has been received with mixed reactions by users. TechWeez writes journalists and writers have praised the idea, while other users are split between admiring the move as bold and doomsaying upon the platform.

What is really, really interesting about this is that it deliberately introduces friction in a platform normally designed to be v. Frictionless.
Sounds like almost nothing, but friction can have huge impacts in aggregate behaviour. https://t.co/xrhYSJRxNe
— Carl Miller (@carljackmiller) June 10, 2020

Big move! Will be super curious about the data here. I expect it will help reduce the spread of misinfo. Side effect might be a barrier for paywalled news orgs to get their stories shared https://t.co/7EVzVzBxxf
— Sarah Frier (@sarahfrier) June 10, 2020

Lolllll this is gonna be the end of this site https://t.co/Q3I1DeuKR5
— Jack Hamilton (@jack_hamilton) June 10, 2020

This is another move on the social media mainstay’s fight against misinformation and flagrant reactions. Twitter has also begun to label tweets that could be holding fake news on the coronavirus and politics. Even a few of US President Donald Trump’s tweets had been slapped with fact-check labels.
The prompt will be based on clickthrough and not time spent on-page. This test will run for at least a few weeks to get enough data to make an informed decision on next steps.

Belgian rail tests sensors to keep workers apart during COVID-19 – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Belgium’s railways are testing smart cameras with sensors to ensure its workers wear masks and maintain their distance to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
From next week, so-called intelligent cameras will be installed in five strategic points in the offices of Belgian rail infrastructure operator Infrabel, where technicians would normally come together, such as the cafeteria.
A warning will sound if people are too numerous, do not have a face mask or get too close.
“We must ensure that our staff complies with the various social distancing guidelines. This is why we are setting up a number of devices based on artificial intelligence,” Benoit Gilson, Infrabel’s strategy director, told Reuters on Monday.
Using AI software available online, Infrabel said it had developed a way to interpret camera images for the purpose of COVID-19 protection, using the technology to calculate if workers are too close or wearing a face mask.
In a demonstration on Monday, staff seen on camera were shown on a giant screen as stick figures whose distance apart could be measured in metres.
On another screen, a camera detected if a worker entering a room was wearing a mask.
“The whole issue of distance (between individuals) is (managed by) a mathematical model that we developed,” said Daniel Degueldre, head of Infrabel’s information technology team.
The company, which has 11,000 employees, said it had already been working on ways to use sensors to protect technicians working on the Belgian railways by placing cameras on helmets that would alert staff in an accident.
That know-how was reappraised to fight coronavirus.
Responsible for Belgium’s 3,602 km of rail lines, Infrabel manages one of the world’s most dense rail networks.

Twitter tests telling users their tweet replies may be offensive – Networking – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Twitter Inc will test sending users a prompt when they reply to a tweet using “offensive or hurtful language,” in an effort to clean up conversations on the social media platform, the company said in a tweet on Tuesday.
When users hit “send” on their reply, they will be told if the words in their tweet are similar to those in posts that have been reported, and asked if they would like to revise it or not.
Twitter has long been under pressure to clean up hateful and abusive content on its platform, which are policed by users flagging rule-breaking tweets and by technology.
“We’re trying to encourage people to rethink their behavior and rethink their language before posting because they often are in the heat of the moment and they might say something they regret,” Sunita Saligram, Twitter’s global head of site policy for trust and safety, said in an interview with Reuters.
Twitter’s policies do not allow users to target individuals with slurs, racist or sexist tropes, or degrading content.
The company took action against almost 396,000 accounts under its abuse policies and more than 584,000 accounts under its hateful conduct policies between January and June of last year, according to its transparency report.
Asked whether the experiment would instead give users a playbook to find loopholes in Twitter’s rules on offensive language, Saligram said that it was targeted at the majority of rule breakers who are not repeat offenders.
Twitter said the experiment, the first of its kind for the company, will start on Tuesday and last at least a few weeks. It will run globally but only for English-language tweets.

Twitter tests disappearing ‘fleets’, similar to Instagram stories- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article

Twitter said on Wednesday it was testing in Brazil a new type of tweet that disappears after 24 hours, similar to the stories feature popular on Snapchat and Facebook’s photo-sharing app Instagram.
Called ‘fleets’, the vanishing messages can be viewed by tapping on a user’s profile picture. They do not appear on the user’s timeline or receive retweets, likes or public replies, Kayvon Beykpour, the company’s product lead, said on Twitter.
“We’re hoping that Fleets can help people share the fleeting thoughts that they would have been unlikely to Tweet,” Beykpour said.
The move comes nearly a year after Twitter’s much larger social media competitor Facebook announced that it would shift focus toward building products that emphasize privacy and ephemerality, which it says users are gravitating toward.
Twitter has been rolling out new features aimed at making the platform more user-friendly in the past several months, but the company’s growth has lagged behind rivals for years, leaving investors grumbling that it has failed to innovate or expand beyond its core platform.
Its shares fell last year when it disclosed that its platform experienced glitches that hindered its ability to target ads and share data with partners.
Activist hedge fund Elliott Management is now pushing for changes at the company, including the removal of its chief executive Jack Dorsey.

Twitter tests labels, community moderation for lies by public figures – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Twitter said on Thursday that it was testing a new community moderation approach that would enable users to identify misleading information posted by politicians and public figures and add brightly coloured labels under those tweets.
NBC News earlier reported that Twitter company documents showing a mockup of the new approach were accessible on a publicly available website, although it did not identify the site.
The company said that the leaked illustrations showed one possible iteration of a new approach to combat misinformation.
“We’re exploring a number of ways to address misinformation and provide more context for Tweets on Twitter,” Twitter said in a statement.
“This is a design mockup for one option that would involve community feedback. Misinformation is a critical issue and we will be testing many different ways to address it.”
A spokesman said the project was in the early stages and not currently staffed.
The mockup obtained by NBC News showed a plan to develop a “community reports” feature, which Twitter likened to Wikipedia. Twitter users would earn points and badges for rating “harmfully misleading” content.
Twitter and other social media companies are under intense pressure to stem lies and misinformation on their platforms.
They have introduced measures in recent months designed to head off interference in the US presidential election in November, although critics say they are insufficient compared to the scale of the problem.
Twitter announced in the summer that it would label and de-emphasise tweets that broke its rules but came from important public figures like politicians. But it has not yet done so for any tweets.
The company also banned political ads in the fall and said earlier this month that it would apply “false” warning labels to tweets containing synthetic or deceptively edited forms of media and remove any that are likely to cause harm.
Democratic presidential contender Mike Bloomberg on Thursday tweeted a video of Wednesday night’s debate edited to make it appear as though other candidates were rendered speechless when he asked if any of them had started businesses.
The Twitter spokesman said the company would likely label Bloomberg’s tweet under the new policy on synthetic and deceptively edited media, which is set to come into effect on March 5.

Apple lawsuit tests if an employee can plan rival startup while on payroll – Benchmarking Change- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Attorneys for a former Apple executive on Tuesday will try to convince a sceptical judge of a core tenet of tech startup culture – that employees can plan a competing venture while still in a job.
Apple’s lawsuit against a former chip executive-turned-rival will have implications for employees all over California who are considering striking out on their own and creating the startups that drive tech business and culture.
California’s long-held public policy favours employee mobility in contrast to states that allow strong non-compete agreements. That stance allowed for the “traitorous eight” who left their jobs at Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory for a rival in the late 1950s and who eventually spawned dozens of companies, including Intel Corp.
Apple filed the lawsuit in Santa Clara County Superior Court against Gerard Williams III, who left the company last year after more than nine years as chief architect for the custom processors that power iPhones and iPads to start Nuvia Inc, which is designing chips for servers.
Judge Mark H. Pierce last week issued a tentative ruling allowing the case to proceed but barring Apple from seeking punitive damages. Pierce will decide after a hearing on Tuesday whether to make his ruling final.
Apple sued Williams in August, alleging that he breached an intellectual property agreement and a duty of loyalty to the company by planning his new startup while on company time at Apple, spending hours on the phone with colleagues who eventually joined the venture.
Apple declined to comment on the case.
Through a spokesperson, Williams declined to comment. Apple is not suing Nuvia itself or any of Williams’ co-founders and it did not allege any intellectual property or trade secret theft.
According to a copy of Williams’ agreement that Apple attached to its complaint, the contract required that Williams “will not plan or engage in any other employment” that competes with Apple or is directly related to the company.
In a filing in November, Williams argued that Apple’s contract was unenforceable because California law allows employees to make some preparations to compete while still in their current job.
Even in California, there are limits, said Cliff Palefsky, a prominent San Francisco-based employment attorney. Workers can lay some plans for a competitor on their own time, but recruiting fellow employees on company time “gets a little dicey”.
In his tentative ruling, Pierce wrote that “an employee is not permitted to plan and prepare to create a competitive enterprise prior to termination if the employee does so on their employer’s time and with the employer’s resources.”
The case will likely hinge the specific facts of Williams’ planning for Nuvia, Palefsky said. Given that work at modern tech jobs rarely sticks to traditional business hours, it may be difficult to untangle whether calls were made during company time or personal time.
“That phrase – that you can’t plan to compete – raises a very interesting question of whether (Apple’s contract) is violative of the public policy and whether the courts are going to enforce it,” he said. “This is going to be some groundbreaking stuff, one way or the other.”
The court has not set a trial date.

NASA Tests Space Concrete for Future Mars Habitats

NASA is looking toward a future when humans could visit Mars for an extended period, and Elon Musk is promising to send people there in the next decade. Whenever humans do set foot on Mars, they’re going to need someplace to hang their hat (or spacesuit helmet). Concrete could potentially allow explorers to build structures quickly and easily, assuming it sets correctly without Earth gravity. NASA has conducted experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to assess the strength of concrete mixed in space.

Scientists believe concrete could be an ideal material for building on other worlds because it’s durable, offers protection from radiation, and it may be possible to make it using materials present on the moon and Mars. Being able to manufacture building materials at your destination (known as in-situ resources) makes missions cheaper and easier to design because you don’t have to launch as much mass from Earth.

However, there’s a lot we still don’t know about the molecular structure of concrete here on Earth. Concrete is a mixture of sand and gravel with lime or silicate (cement powder). As the cement dissolves in water, it forms crystal complexes that link together the aggregate to make a solid structure. The process of mixing and building with concrete is well established on Earth, but we don’t know how microgravity could affect it. Do we need to modify the ratios? Add additional materials? That’s what the ISS experiment aims to find out.

ISS concrete above and Earth concrete below.

The experiment, known as Microgravity Investigation of Cement Solidification (MICS), is the first time concrete has been mixed outside of Earth’s gravity. Astronauts aboard the ISS mixed tricalcium silicate and water in varying amounts to create a concrete paste. The astronauts added alcohol to some of the packets to stop the hydration process at set intervals as well. A separate experiment used a centrifuge simulated lunar and Martian gravity on the samples as they mixed.

The experiment confirms that concrete can harden in microgravity, which is a good thing. That means we can build structures with concrete outside of Earth’s gravity. The primary difference is an increase in pores compared with concrete mixed on Earth, and that could reduce the material’s strength. However, lower gravity on the moon or Mars would also put it under less strain. It may be possible to develop different binders that improve the strength of lunar or Martian concrete, and that may even lead to better concrete here on Earth.

Netflix tests human-driven curation with launch of ‘Collections’ – gpgmail

Netflix is testing a new way to help users find TV shows and movies they’ll want to watch with the launch of a “Collections” feature, currently in testing on iOS devices. While Netflix today already offers thematic suggestions of things to watch, based on your Netflix viewing history, Collections aren’t only based on themes. According to Netflix, the titles are curated by experts on the company’s creative teams, and are organized into these collections based on similar factors — like genre, tone, storyline, and character traits.

This human-led curation is different from how Netflix typically makes its recommendations. The streaming service is famous for its advanced categorization system, where there are hundreds of niche categories that go beyond broad groupings like “Action,” “Drama,” “Sci-Fi,” “Romance,” and the like. These narrower subcategories allow the streamer to make more specific and targeted recommendations.

Netflix also tracks titles that are popular and trending across its service, so you can check in on what everyone else is watching, as well.

The new Collections feature was first spotted by Jeff Higgins, who tweeted some screenshots of the addition.

If you’ve been opted in to the test, the Collections option is available at the top right of the app’s homepage — where My List would have been otherwise.

The suggestions are organized into editorial groups, with titles like “Let’s Keep It Light,” “Dark & Devious TV Shows,” “Prizewinning Movie Picks,” “Watch, Gasp, Repeat,” “Women Who Rule the Screen,” and many more.

You can follow the Collection from the main screen, or you can tap into it to further explore its titles.

If you tap a collection that interests you, it smoothly expands to the show the thumbnails of the suggested titles below a header that explains what the collection is about. You can choose to follow the suggestion from here too, which presumably ties into Netflix’s notification system.

Collections are also found on the app’s Home page, for those who have access to the new feature.

“We’re always looking for new ways to connect our fans with titles we think they’ll love, so we’re testing out a new way to curate Netflix titles into collections on the Netflix iOS app,” a Netflix spokesperson confirmed to gpgmail. “Our tests generally vary in how long they run for and in which countries they run in, and they may or may not become permanent features on our service.”

UQ4dOkhZ

This isn’t the first time Netflix has toyed with organizing content suggestions into Collections. The company’s DVD service (yes, it still exists), had rolled out a similar Collections feature in its own mobile app.

This test comes at a time when Netflix is working on features to better retain existing subscribers amid increased competition, including that from upcoming rivals like Disney+ and Apple TV+, among others. On this front, it also recently launched a feature allowing users to track new and soon-to-launch releases, as a means of keeping subscribers anticipating what comes next.

Netflix said Collections is only available on iOS. As a test, it won’t show to all users.
