Amazon to build first robotic Australian fulfilment centre in Sydney – Strategy – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon will build its first robotic Australian fulfilment centre in Sydney’s west in a bid to accelerate order processing times and improve the e-tailer’s competitiveness.
The company announced plans for the massive 200,000 square metre facility on Tuesday, which will also be its largest in Australia with “around the same land size as Taronga Zoo”.
The centre, to be located near the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, is expected to create 1500 permanent jobs when completed in late 2021, as well as a further 700 jobs during construction.
It will be the company’s second centre in Western Sydney, allowing it to increase its “capacity to fulfil customers orders”.
Amazon said the fulfilment centre will be “equipped with the most advanced Amazon Robotics technology”, allowing it to operate 24/7 and store “50 percent more items per square metre”.
The robots will be used to accelerate order processing times by “moving shelves to employees” to reduce how long it takes staff to pick “up to 11 million items” for customer orders.
Amazon Australia operations director Craig Fuller said the centre will more than double the company’s operational footprint in Australia, while improving efficiency for staff and customers.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the “construction and operation of this centre will deliver far-reaching benefits for the people and businesses of NSW”.
“With the ability to operate 24/7, the almost 200,000 square metre facility is expected to be the largest ‘fulfilment centre’ built in Australia,” she said.
“It will also be its most advanced, incorporating the company’s latest robotics systems, the first time these will have been deployed in the Southern Hemisphere.”
Amazon currently operates more than 50 robotic fulfillment centres around the world.

Optus runs mmWave 5G tests in Sydney – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Optus is testing 5G millimetre wave (mmWave) technology at four locations in Sydney, months after suggesting the technology could bring speeds in excess of 20Gbps.
The telco said in a statement that it has Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) approval to operate and test mmWave technology using the 26GHz band “at four locations in Sydney, including its Macquarie Park headquarters”.
As part of its tests, the company made a data call with technology partner Ericsson using mmWave customer premises equipment (CPE) made by Casa Systems.
It has also “run extensive testing at its lab facility in Sydney,” it said.
The telco reinforced its interest in using mmWave to serve the enterprise market in the first instance.
“MmWave 5G is the next step in unlocking mass productivity gains through a high-speed wireless communication layer,” Optus Networks managing director Lambo Kanagaratnam said.
“The enterprise market in particular is expected to gain from mmWave, with sectors such as autonomous manufacturing, mining and port operations all examples of industries that will considerably benefit from mmWave 5G and its capability to offer higher speeds.”
A mmWave spectrum auction is currently scheduled for early next year.

Lion accidentally directs milk orders to Sydney IT security consultancy – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Beverage maker Lion had its Tasmanian customers try to place dairy orders with a Sydney-based cybersecurity consultancy after publishing the wrong phone number for customer service following a cyber attack.
The error was corrected by Tuesday night, but not before Cliffside Security spent the day fielding drink orders in addition to its usual sales calls.
“Today the strangest thing happened. From what I understand, a dairy company got hacked, and their systems went offline, so they updated their website with phone numbers for orders, and the last phone number is our Cliffside Security sales number (a mistake on their side),” Cliffside Security’s Director and Principal Consultant Adriano Leite said.
“So our number has been ringing the whole day, because of a hack (as usual) but now we’re getting milk orders instead.”
Cliffside Security’s phone number was included in a placeholder image on the customer portal for Lion’s Australian dairy and drinks business.
“Customers looking to place an order are asked to please call the below numbers and place their order via a recorded voicemail system,” Lion said on its website.
It listed separate numbers for Victoria, NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania; the Tasmanian number had two incorrect digits.
Leite told iTnews that he received about 85 calls “and the same amount of voicemails” from Lion customers trying to place dairy and drinks orders.
A Lion spokesperson was contacted for comment.
Lion shut down its IT systems after what it publicly described as a “cyber incident” – though on its customer portal, the company made clear it had suffered an “attack”.
“We shut down our systems immediately as a precaution, and as a result we are experiencing disruption to some of our systems and we are unable to process your order via the portal right now,” it said.
“While there is no evidence to date of any data breaches, our priority is protecting our customers, suppliers, and people.
“We are now in the process of restoring our systems with our team of experts, but there will be ongoing disruption to customer services while we safely bring everything back online.”
Tests by iTnews on Tuesday night showed only one of Lion’s three customer portals was online.
Its NZ customer portal had been replaced with a “maintenance” message, while the Australian dairy and drinks customer portal carried a “cyber attack” notification (along with the phone number snafu).
The portal used by Australian beer customers to place orders appeared to be functioning normally.
The company, which is home to brands like XXXX, Toohey’s, Hahn, James Boag, Dairy Farmers Daily Juice and Yoplait, has not yet publicly disclosed the nature or extent of the attack.
However, it is reported to have disrupted manufacturing operations, in addition to customer orders.

Sydney Water to deploy thousands more IoT sensors – Projects – Hardware – Networking- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sydney Water will deploy “thousands” of new internet of things sensors in the coming months, ramping up technology trials that have so far seen around 1500 sensors deployed into the field.
The utility has been running IoT technology trials since 2017, with a primary focus on detecting service faults before they can negatively impact customers.
“We are currently exploring applications, such as the detection of sewer blockages and overflows, monitoring of water pressure and digital metering of customer water usage and have identified many more potential use cases we will investigate in the future,” a Sydney Water spokesperson told iTnews.
“So far, we’ve deployed around 1500 IoT devices, including sewer level sensors in high-risk areas and digital flow meters on customer properties.
“The rollout shows some early benefits; for example, the system detected a number of blockages in sewers which our crews could clear before customers or the environment were impacted.
“We plan to expand the IoT trial rapidly and roll out thousands more devices over the next [few] months.”
The spokesperson said the technology trials to date covered various low-power wireless networking technologies, as well as sensors, transmitters and IT platforms.
Part of its more recent work is in association with the Western Sydney Parkland Sensor Network project.
The sensing project has largely stayed out of the public spotlight but is part of the ambitious Western Sydney City Deal, which involves federal and state governments, and eight councils.
Sydney Water is supporting the Western Sydney Parkland Sensor Network project both with IoT expertise and low-power network equipment.
The utility’s spokesperson told iTnews that it “is providing each participating Council with a minimum of one LoRaWAN gateway.”
LoRAWAN stands for long range wide area network. The gateways being installed will join The Things Network (TTN) and are being installed “on Sydney Water or Council properties and offer both private and public LoRaWAN access.”
The Sydney Water properties hosting the wireless infrastructure are believed to include water reservoirs and towers.
Sydney Water’s spokesperson said the rapid expansion of IoT sensing capabilities would provide the organisation with data to aid decision-making and to progress more uses cases involving artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML).
“The ability to capture more and higher frequency of data will drive predictive analytics and machine learning capability with the ultimate goal of delivering artificial intelligence to support operations decision-making and enabling cognitive automation,” its spokesperson said.
“This, along with data from SCADA, drone technologies, building information modelling (BIM), asset performance data and hydraulic models, will be utilised to deliver digital twins of assets, systems and cities that will transform the way that planners and operators of the future work in a modern utility.”
Digital twins are virtual representations of physical assets and can be used to run realistic scenario tests before making changes to production infrastructure.
“As the next step towards this goal, Sydney Water has just begun an expression of interest (EOI) process for a strategic partner in the area of AI/ML,” the spokesperson said.
The EOI notes that the utility hopes to combine real-time data flows with “a rich historical dataset gathered over more than 20 years, coupled with a wealth of internal subject matter expertise, to contribute to the desired outcome.”
It is hoping to find a third party to help it develop “water utility AI and ML models coupled with associated technologies to allow us to operate in a predictive and proactive manner.”
In addition, Sydney Water flagged broader use of AI/ML techniques in the organisation, which could be pursued in subsequent phases of work.
“Whilst the focus of this EOI aims to advance our recently implemented IoT pilot and will be primarily around customer focussed operations and maintenance efficiencies we are cognisant that there are significant opportunities for the application of AI/ML to other domains within the business such as planning, HR, safety and property,” Sydney Water said.
“It is envisaged that these opportunities would be explored as a second phase of the program.”

COVID-19 pushes Sydney Trains to build occupancy reporting app for staff – Strategy – Projects- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A new app that allows Sydney Trains staff to report crowding on services has been rolled out in a bid to improve the flow of real-time occupancy data on Sydney’s rail network during COVID-19.
Transport for NSW launched the customer management team (CMT) app this week to help ensure strict physical distancing measures are maintained on public transport services during COVID-19.
It was developed by Sydney-based company AppJourney, which is also responsible for the customer travel app NextThere, over a single weekend in early May in preparation for the easing of restrictions.
The app will be used by Sydney Trains’ equally new social distancing squad, which was also revealed as the rail network’s new “eyes and ears” on Tuesday by Transport Minister Andrew Constance.
The majority of the 80-strong team will be positioned across 30 of the busiest train platforms at 25 stations to combat crowding., while 20 monitor passenger movements from the Rail Operation Centre (ROC) in Alexandria using the network’s 11,000 CCTV cameras.
A TfNSW spokesperson told iTnews the 60 staff positioned on the network’s business platforms will use the app to report “live loading data” to the team of 20 in the ROC to “allow operational decisions to be made in real-time like never before”.
The real-time data, which will be entered by staff from a large number of locations simultaneously, will also be available through the MyStation portal used by frontline staff at stations.
A video released on Tuesday shows a staff member using the app to report occupancy data from one of Sydney’s Waratah trains using a percentage toggle to reflect estimated occupancy.
The app also displays the occupancy data collected from in-build sensors under the axle of each Waratah train for comparison, and allows the staff member to submit notes with the form.
Given the data collected from in-build sensors under the axle of each Waratah train is only collected every ten minutes, the app will significantly improve the flow of data to the ROC, as well as passengers.
This will be particularly usually for busy city stations, which are often only one or two minutes apart.
There is also currently no real-time data available for older rolling stock, including on C or K sets – which are more than 35 years old – or Tangaras, to allow passengers to pre-empt crowding.
In addition to weight data, which was recently updated to reflect new occupancy limits on public transport service, data reported through the app is also combined with real-time data from the Opal network.
“Some of the systems we have developed are world-firsts and provide customers with smarter data than ever before so they can make more informed decisions around which services to catch,” the spokesperson said.
While the app was “briefed, created and delivered over a single weekend” in response to the need to monitor crowding during the pandemic, it is based on an iPhone-based “customer boarding assistance application” that was first trialled during the 2018-19 financial year.
According to Sydney Trains’ latest annual report, the app – which launched in the second half of last year – was developed to improve “the timeliness and accuracy of information provided to frontline customer services staff to better assist less mobile customers on and off the train”.

Sydney woman charged for running alleged unlawful digital currency exchange – Finance- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Detectives from the NSW Cybercrime Squad have charged a woman allegedly acting as an unlawful digital currency provider after seizing $60,000 in cash and over $73,000 worth of Bitcoin.
A 52-year-old woman was arrested at a Burwood shopping centre at around 1pm yesterday following inquiries from the squad’s Strike Force Kerriwah, which was established in late 2018 to investigate an online money laundering syndicate operating in NSW.
The investigation was also supported by AUSTRAC (Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC).
A search of the woman’s handbag and vehicle resulted in $60,000 in cash, 3.8 Bitcoin valued at more than $55,0000 and a mobile phone being seized.
NSW Police confirmed to iTnews the cryptocurrency was found on hard wallet and storage devices.
Strike force investigators also seized digital currency wallets and a further $18,200 in Bitcoin along with mobile phones, computers, digital storage devices and documentation while searching a residential unit in Hurstville shortly after the woman’s arrest.
The woman was taken to Burwood police station and charged with three counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime and breach requirement re digital currency exchange services.
It will also be alleged that the woman has transacted Bitcoin valued at more than $5 million since 2017.
Police will allege in court that the woman operated an unlawful online money laundering syndicate exchanging cash for cryptocurrency, which Cybercrime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Matt Craft said is the first arrest by the squad relating to non-compliant digital currency providers in the state, and potentially the first of its kind in Australia.
Craft stressed that the vast majority of digital currency exchange providers are doing the right things, but that this arrest also serves as a reminder to operators that they meet their legal obligations.
“While cash is still ‘king’, digital currencies are fast becoming the preferred choice for organised criminal networks involved in money laundering, funding terrorism, and cybercrimes.
“It is concerning that when this kind of online exchange goes unregulated, it can allow criminals to move currency and launder funds seemingly undetected.
“Let this arrest be a warning to digital currency exchange providers – if you fail to comply with your obligations, your actions will not go unnoticed.
“Any information about illicit activity by digital currency exchange providers that is provided to Cybercrime Squad detectives will be actively pursued in partnership with AUSTRAC and ACIC,” Det Supt Craft said.
The woman was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Monday 20 July 2020.
Amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 were introduced in April 2018 which included expanding the scope of the Act to include regulation of digital currency exchange providers.
AUSTRAC has cancelled associated digital currency exchange registrations as a result of investigations under Strike Force Kerriwah and will continue conducting assessments as inquiries by the Cybercrime Squad continue.

Vodafone trials 5G services in 700MHz spectrum in Sydney – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Vodafone Hutchison Australia is starting to trial 5G services using 700MHz spectrum at an undisclosed number of 5G sites in and around Parramatta in Sydney’s west.
The telco is using Nokia AirScale equipment for the field trial, which the vendor said is the “first 5G low-band NR700MHz deployment in a field test environment in Australia and the Asia Pacific region”.
Parramatta was the first location in Australia where VHA switched on its 5G network back in early March, and the telco has published coverage maps here, which gives some indication of the potential size of the 700MHz field trial.
Currently, Vodafone’s 5G network operates in the 3.5GHz band.
The 700MHz band is mostly associated with 4G service delivery in Australia, although not by Vodafone, which purchased only a small amount of the spectrum back in 2017.
Internationally, in markets such as China, 700MHz spectrum is being repurposed to deliver 5G services.
Nokia said in a statement that, once live, “the use of 700MHz spectrum will enhance VHA’s 5G network coverage, improve the indoor coverage experience and deliver high-speed 5G connectivity to customers where it is being made available.”
“Combined with its 5G spectrum in the 3.5GHz band, VHA will be equipped to deliver a compelling combination of speed, capacity and coverage to its customers,” it said.
“The 700MHz spectrum will be rolled out to selected areas as part of VHA’s 5G rollout.”
Nokia said its Global Services business “will play a crucial role” in that expansion, “providing project planning, installation, and network optimisation services.”
“Where it optimises network performance, Nokia and Vodafone experts will repurpose the 700MHz spectrum to 5G 700MHz enabling the delivery of new 5G services, whilst maintaining the performance of the existing 4G network,” it said.
Vodafone struck a minimum five year deal with Nokia on December 30 last year to underpin its 5G network, having been unable to use Huawei gear owing to a government ban.

NEC to join Atlassian at Sydney Central Innovation Hub – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

NEC has become the second tech giant after Atlassian to put its weight behind Sydney’s new Innovation and Technology Precinct slated for the construction above the Central Station rail yards as part of a new deal with the state government.
Both NEC Australia and its parent company, NEC, on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding with the NSW government through a video conference to become  founding members in the co-creation of the Digital Safer and Smarter City environment.
The strategy centres on using NEC’s artificial intelligence, internet of things and biometrics technologies to create more people-friendly, convenient and safer city environments.
NEC and NSW plan to largely focus on five main sectors: digital government, public safety, aviation, health and smart transportation, which will be expanded to so-called ‘lighthouse precincts’ including Westmead Health and Education Precinct, the Western Sydney Aerotropolis and regional Special Activation Precincts at Williamtown, Parkes and Wagga Wagga.
Stuart Ayres, Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney welcomed NEC to the foundation partner network to design and develop the state’s technology and innovation framework.
“We have found a strong partner who shares our vision of a safer and smarter cities experience,” Ayres said
“The NSW Government is committed to making our lives environment-resilient and digital-friendly and this strategic partnership with NEC will help us become an attractive precinct for global and domestic business and investors, while at the same time providing innovative experiences for the people of NSW.”
NEC Australia chief executive Mitsuhiro Murooka echoed Ayres’ sentiments, adding that partnership is intent on bringing the benefits of digital technologies to both the established and rapidly developing parts of the state.

Sydney Uni spins up ‘Corona-Bot’ to handle influx of queries – Projects – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Over the course of a single week the University of Sydney has built an “AI-infused” chatbot to provide instant, up-to-date information on the university’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Developed using Microsoft cognitive services, the ‘Corona-Bot’ is already handling between 200 and 400 interactions each day, with students typically asking two to three questions per session.
The response content is continuously updated to ensure the bot remains a central repository of information during the crisis – an issue iTnews discovered while putting together our own list of universities’ migration online.
Corona-Bot was initially devised as a single question/answer conversational agent able to respond to questions with a concise, up-to-date response.
However, the university is now considering how that might be further developed to enable multi-stage questions with a more natural, conversational tone.
For the university, the resulting data on what questions students are asking on a day-by-day basis is proving invaluable in informing its future responses to the evolving situation.
While students were initially asking about whether courses would be offered online, the current trend includes questions to do with exams such as what special considerations might be available for students who contract the virus and can’t submit an assessment or sit an exam on time.
“This project was a great example of the team addressing an emergent challenge quickly, with a solution that not only assists students, but also informs the University on the dynamically changing student concerns,” Steve Blunt, general manager at the university’s Automation & Innovation Hub, said.
The hub has previously used Microsoft cognitive services to deliver other chatbots, including a ‘FinBot’ for Sydney Uni’s finance department that can handle the vast number of orders, invoices and queries that nearly swamped the department.
