Creative Work of the Week: The KitKat Kit shows you a creative way to have a break- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

KitKat’s famous slogan, ‘have a break’ was given a new lease of life by Wunderman Thompson who elected to show that even the most intricate and demanding hobbies are better if you take a break.
To demonstrate this, it teamed with Airfix for a campaign that worked with YouTube influencers and was supported by press ads and OOH ads.
The two brands joined forces to create The KitKat Kit, a special edition of Airfix’s Supermarine Spitfire model. It added a sealed KitKat into the kits mounted on a 3D-printed plastic ‘sprue’, which also incorporates the famous ‘Have a Break’ message.
An additional step was even inserted into the instruction booklet telling the hobbyists exactly when to open the bag (as Step 38), take out the snack and enjoy their break.
For its playful twist on a classic slogan, Tempemail’s readers voted the campaign the Creative Work of the Week.

Radeon RX 5600 XT with new vBIOS boost shows impressive new benchmark scores – Blog – 10 minute

Recap: This battle between AMD and Nvidia essentially started at CES 2020, shortly after AMD announced its RX 5600-series. EVGA, presumably with Nvidia’s blessing, then unveiled what seemed a preemptive response in the form of RTX 2060 KO graphics cards, starting at the same $279 price as AMD’s RX 5600 XT.
Then, we learned that AMD pushed out a new vBIOS to its AIB partners as a response to Nvidia’s price cuts on the RTX 2060 in what’s been a back and forth volley between the two companies at the $300 price point.
The new vBIOS ratchets up the TBP (Typical Board Power) to 160W, a 10W increase from the original 150W TBP. This in turn affords AMD’s board partners a higher margin for core and memory clocks. Which brings us to Sapphire, one of AMD’s premiere AIB partners.
As we previously reported, Sapphire’s RX 5600 XT Pulse is now boasting increased base and boost clocks of 1,615 MHz and 1,750 MHz, up from the previous 1,560 MHz and 1,620 MHz. The memory clock is now running at 14Gpbs effective, as opposed to 12Gpbs.
Now, Twitter user @TUM_APISAK has sniffed out a leaked benchmark showing what kind of performance uplift the new vBIOS can create.

Sapphire new BIOS update score
TS – 76XX
FS – 219XXFSE – 108XXFSU – 55XX https://t.co/FHVcMgRJk3
— APISAK (@TUM_APISAK) January 18, 2020

The benchmarks are, in order: Time Spy, Fire Strike, Fire Strike Extreme, and Fire Strike Ultra. Doing the math between the new and old scores, the new scores net an impressive 10% – 11% uplift in performance, depending on the benchmark.
As with all synthetic benchmarks, these don’t necessarily indicate what users can expect in the real world. However, it’s certainly a nice preview of what we can expect from the RX 5600 XT. AMD and Nvidia will likely continue to insist that this was the plan all along, rather than either company admit to being one-upped by the other. However, the more pertinent question is: are there any more cards left to play, or have AMD and Nvidia showed their full hand?

No immunity from cyber attacks, shows Check Point Research‘s cyber security report- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Check Point Research, the Threat Intelligence arm of Check Point Software Technologies has published its 2020 Cyber Security Report. The Report highlights the main tactics cyber-criminals are using to attack organizations worldwide across all industries, and gives cyber security professionals and C-Level executives the information they need to protect their organizations from today’s fifth-generation cyber-attacks and threats.
The 2020 Security Report reveals the key attack vectors and techniques observed by Check Point researchers during the past year. Highlights include:
Cryptominers still dominate malware landscape – Even though cryptomining declined during 2019, linked to cryptocurrencies’ fall in value and the closure of the Coinhive operation in March, 38% of companies globally were impacted by crypto-miners in 2019, up from 37% in 2018. This is because the use of crypto-miners remains a low-risk, high-reward activity for criminals

Botnet armies surge in size – 28% of organizations globally were hit by botnet activity, an increase of over 50% compared with 2018. Emotet was the most common bot malware used, primarily because of its versatility in enabling malware and spam distribution services. Other botnet actions such as sextortion email activity and DDoS attacks also rose sharply in 2019.
Targeted ransomware hits hard – While the number of impacted organizations is relatively low, the severity of the attack is much higher – as seen in 2019’s damaging attacks against U.S. city administrations. Criminals are choosing their ransomware targets carefully, with the aim of extorting the maximum revenue possible.
Mobile attacks decline – 27% of organizations worldwide were impacted by cyber-attacks that involved mobile devices in 2019, down from 33% in 2018. While the mobile threat landscape is maturing, organizations are also increasingly aware of the threat, and are deploying more protection on mobiles
The year Magecart attacks became an epidemic – These attacks which inject malicious code into e-commerce websites to steal customers’ payment data hit hundreds of sites in 2019, from hotel chains to from commerce giants to SMBs, across all platforms.
Rise in cloud attacks – Currently more than 90% of enterprises use cloud services and yet 67% of security teams complain about the lack of visibility into their cloud infrastructure, security, and compliance. The magnitude of cloud attacks and breaches has continued to grow in 2019. Misconfiguration of cloud resources is still the number one cause for cloud attacks, but now we also witness an increasing number of attacks aimed directly at cloud service providers.

“2019 presented a complex threat landscape where nation states, cybercrime organizations and private contractors accelerated the cyber arms race, elevating each other’s capabilities at an alarming pace, and this will continue into 2020,” said Lotem Finkelsteen, Threat Intelligence Group Manager, Check Point Software Technologies.
He added, “Even if an organization is equipped with the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art security products, the risk of being breached cannot be completely eliminated. Beyond detection and remediation, organizations need to adopt a proactive plan to stay ahead of cybercriminals and prevent attacks. Detecting and automatically blocking the attack at an early stage can prevent damage. Check Point’s 2020 Security Report shares what organizations need to look out for, and how they can win the war against cyber attacks through key best practices.”

Recent search warrant reportedly shows FBI can access data on locked iPhone 11 – Blog – 10 minute

The billion dollar question: The FBI appears to have the ability to either unlock or otherwise retrieve data from an iPhone 11 running iOS 13 without having the passcode. If this is the case, why is it asking Apple to unlock two other devices — an iPhone 5 and iPhone 7? Surely, the older phones are not more secure than the current generation, or are they?
As we reported earlier this month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has once again asked Apple to unlock two iPhones in connection with the Pensacola Naval Air Base shooting. While the company has indicated that it has been cooperating with authorities by turning over relevant documents and files, it has stopped short of cracking the devices.
Pressure increased in the following weeks as the FBI, US Attorney General William Barr, and President Trump have also asked Cupertino for help opening the devices. However, it appears that they may not actually need Apple’s help at all.
Forbes reports that it has obtained a search warrant from an unrelated 2019 case that reveals that the FBI has already successfully cracked an iPhone 11 Pro Max. The device belonged to Baris Ali Koch, who is accused of aiding and abetting for helping his brother flee the country after he was convicted on a hate crime charge.
Photographs of the iPhone listed in the warrant show what is definitely Apple’s latest iPhone. Forbes confirmed with Koch’s lawyer that the phone was locked when the authorities obtained it and that his client did not provide the passcode. The image also shows the phone in a secured state, indicating it was locked when entered into evidence.
Image via Southern District Court of Ohio
An inventory sheet included with the warrant, stated that a USB drive containing GrayKey was used on the device for “forensic analysis.” The iPhone unlocking software made by Grayshift has been around since at least early 2018. Since its discovery, Apple has been implementing measures to thwart the technology with unverified success.
Apple’s newest devices are supposed to be more secure than past iterations, so it is unclear why officials are continuing to apply pressure to the tech giant to open the older Pensacola phones — an iPhone 5 and iPhone 7.
Oregon Senator Ron Wyden has asked the Justice Department for its reasoning in publicly demanding “backdoors” when it already possesses the tools to breach the newest iPhones.
According to Berkley International Computer Science Institute researcher Nicholas Weaver, the FBI’s tactics are nothing more than “theatre.” He explains that Cupertino designed the iPhone without a means for getting in without the passcode, not even for Apple.
“Basically, Apple made a safe where to change the combo you have to unlock the safe, and the FBI is saying ‘change the combo’ when they know full well you can’t change the combo without unlocking the safe first,” said Weaver.
To what end the theatrics serve remains in question. The DoJ has declined to comment on the matter, so one can only speculate as to the motivation for the continued demands. Perhaps the Bureau and other government officials are attempting to set a precedent to facilitate future failed attempts at cracking devices, but who knows?
Now that the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, it will be interesting to see if the FBI backs down on the issue.

Survey: New research shows it’s a hybrid and multi-cloud world – Blog – 10 minute

The big picture: At this point, virtually anyone who follows the tech industry in even the most casual way has probably heard, not only about the influence of cloud computing, but also the impact of what is commonly called “multi-cloud.” What many don’t know, however, is the specifics of how much companies are using these cloud computing resources, what types of workloads they’re running in the cloud, why they chose to use cloud services, and much more.
A new research study, initiated by TECHnalysis Research, dove into all those details. It began with a survey of 600 US-based businesses (200 medium-sized companies with 100-999 employees and 400 large enterprises with 1,000 employees or more) who were users of cloud computing services. The results show that today’s cloud computing environment is an incredibly dense, rich tapestry of different workloads at various maturity levels running in different locations on different underlying platforms for many different reasons.
The basic idea with multi-cloud is that companies use multiple different cloud computing options as part of their overall computing environment. In some cases, that could mean using multiple public cloud providers, such as Amazon’s AWS, Microsoft’s Azure, and Google’s Cloud Platform (GCP), or it could mean they’re using one public cloud provider and one or more “private” or “hybrid” clouds, or some combination of all the above.
Private cloud refers to computing environments that use the same basic types of flexible technologies and software platforms that public clouds offer but do so either within the company’s own data center or in what’s called a “hosted environment.” These hosted environments are external sites that house the physical resources (servers, storage, networking equipment, etc.) necessary to run computer workloads from multiple different companies simultaneously.
Typically, these locations—which are sometimes called co-located sites or “colos” for short—provide power, strong physical security, and most importantly, high-speed connections to large telecommunication networks or other network service providers. Unlike with public cloud companies, however, the physical assets (and the workloads) at these sites remain under the control of the company requesting the service.
Hybrid cloud refers to environments that mix some element of public cloud computing providers with private and/or managed/hosted providers either within the data center or at a co-located site.
What the study found is that for companies like those surveyed, who have been using cloud computing for several years now, approximately 30% of today’s workloads are being run in the public cloud, another 30% are legacy applications still being run in the corporate data center, and the remaining 40% are a combination of private and hybrid cloud workloads, as Fig. 1 illustrates.

Fig. 1
Interestingly, when asked what companies expected the mix to look like in 18-24 months, the results weren’t significantly different, with about a 5% drop in legacy workloads and about a 2.5% increase each for public cloud and private/hybrid cloud workloads, suggesting the transition to new cloud-based workloads has slowed for many of these organizations.
In addition to this diversity of high-level workload types, the study showed a large number of options being used within each of those groups. On average, for example, survey respondents were using 3.1 different public cloud providers across both IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service—typically access to the raw computing resources of a public cloud provider) and PaaS (Platform as a Service—adding software and services on top of the raw hardware) offerings. Of the nearly 87% of respondents who said they were running a private cloud of some type, they averaged 1.6 different private cloud platforms.
When it came to specific workload counts, companies averaged 3.4 workloads per public cloud provider and 2.9 workloads for private and hybrid clouds. Doing the math, that means organizations like the ones who participated in the survey typically have over 15 cloud-based workloads that they’re using. On top of that, survey respondents deployed a number of SaaS (Software as a Service) cloud-based applications as well. These include Microsoft’s Office 365, Google’s G Suite, Salesforce, and many others, and the average per company worked out to 3.7. As a result, today’s US businesses are balancing nearly 19 cloud-based applications/workloads as part of their computing environment, as the table shows below.

The reasons for moving all these different workloads to the cloud vary quite a bit by the specific type of workload, but looking at the weighted totals across all the various types and locations provides some interesting, though not terribly surprising, insights into the rationale that organizations are using to make the move to migrate or rebuild existing applications, or create new ones in the cloud. (Speaking of which, companies said that approximately 1/3 of their cloud-based applications fit into each of these three categories: migrate, or “lift and shift,” rebuild, or “refactor,” and build new.)
The top reasons that survey respondents gave for migrating workloads to the cloud are to improve performance, to increase security, and because of the need to modernize applications. Cost savings actually came in fourth. Ironically, the top reasons those same companies cited for not moving some of their applications to the cloud were very similar: security concerns, performance challenges, regulatory requirements and costs. These dichotomies highlight the ongoing challenges and opposing forces that are a regular part of the modern cloud computing landscape.
There’s no doubt that cloud computing, in all its various forms, will continue to be a critical part of business computing environments for some time to come. Making sense of how experienced companies are approaching it can help vendors optimize their offerings and other businesses find their way through the often very confusing cloud computing world.

Magic: Legends’ first gameplay trailer shows a potential Diablo 3 killer – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: Developer Perfect World dropped a new gameplay trailer (via Game Informer) on Wednesday for its upcoming Magic: Legends. The company describes it as an MMO action RPG, but it looks more like a four-player co-op Diablo 3 clone, and there is nothing wrong with that.
As the name suggests, it is Perfect World’s adaptation of the collector card game Magic: The Gathering that puts players in the shoes of a Planeswalker. If you like playing Diablo 3 as a magic wielder, Magic: Legends should be right up your alley.

The game offers five classes of magic users, but the official website only highlights two at the moment — the Mind Mage and the Geomancer. The former uses psychic-like powers such as telekinesis to attack from range, while the latter can get up close and personal using powerful earth and fire AoE spells to vanquish foes.
The studio also only has two worlds from the Magic multiverse to announce for now. Shiv is a volcanic island on the plane of Dominaria where players will face Ghitu tribes, goblins, ogres, and dragons. Benalia, also on the plane of Dominaria, pits you against the demons of the Cabal.

The game is currently still in the alpha phase, but Perfect World says they plan to launch on consoles and PC sometime this year. A beta version is coming soon, which you can sign up for through Arc Games.
What is most attractive to me is it appears Perfect World is going more with the action-RPG aspect rather than the MMO with the option to go it alone. Perfect for a lone wolf like me.

MSI shows off its futuristic, 5G-capable MEG Aegis Ti5 desktop – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: Most PC fans prefer putting together their own rigs rather than buying a pre-built system, but the latter option can have its advantages, such as coming with some unusual cases and features. MSI’s MEG Aegis Ti5, for example, has a dial, an OLED panel, and looks like something from the future. It’s also the “market’s first 5G-compatible desktop.”
We usually see weird and wonderful pre-built PCs at events such as CES, but the MEG Aegis Ti5 really stands out. The almost robotic design looks very cool, especially the way it’s raised off the surface, which would likely help airflow, but you’ll likely find your eye is drawn to the MSI Commander Unit, or MCU.
As reported by Tom’s Hardware, the MCU is an OLED display that provides real-time information from the PC, including notifications, statistics such as temperature, and even local weather reports. There’s also what MSI is calling a “gaming dial,” which allows users to make instant system adjustments.

Another impressive feature is the 5G support, which MSI says offers transfer speeds faster than both 4G and even wired connections, assuming you have access to a 5G network.
As you might imagine, the MEG Aegis Ti5’s internals are as impressive as its outer shell. While the specs haven’t been finalized, MSI said they should include the latest Core i9, Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti (or the company’s latest GPU), and 128GB of RAM. It also comes with three M.2 SSDs, two 2.5-inch drive bays, a 3.5-inch bay, and a 650W 80 Plus Platinum SFX. Additionally, it uses MSI’s Silent Storm 4 cooling setup, which keeps components in separate chambers to improve airflow.
Unsurprisingly, the MEG Aegis Ti5 doesn’t come cheap. There’s no official release date or price yet, but it’s estimated to be around $4,000 when it arrives, likely during the third quarter.

Sony shows off Vision-S electric car, driving Sony’s idea of the future of connected cars – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Sony driving its electric car on-stage probably makes for the biggest surprise reveal of CES. Called the Vision-S Prototype, the concept car isn’t meant to turn Sony into the next big EV maker, rather serve as a testbed for showcasing automotive technologies that leverage the company’s expertise in imaging, sensors and entertainment products.
Sony doesn’t plan on selling electric cars anytime soon, but the company’s first effort with the Vision-S concept certainly looks promising. Focused on the evolution of safety, adaptability, and entertainment in cars of the future, Sony partnered with several heavyweights in the auto industry to come up with its connected car platform, demonstrating it in a car built by the same team that put together Sony’s cutesy Aibo robot dog.
Codenamed ‘Safety Cocoon,’ the technology on-board the EV consists of over 30 sensors for making the car aware of its surroundings. These include CMOS image sensors, solid-state LiDAR and Time of Flight (ToF) sensors for detecting vehicles, objects and people, enabling day/night time vision and providing driving support with up to Level 2 autonomous capability.

The car’s exterior has hints of Tesla and Lucid Motors around the sides and rear, while the front looks to be inspired by the Porsche Taycan. In terms of propulsion, the Vision-S is powered by a dual-motor setup making a combined 400kW (536hp) through an all-wheel-drive system, enabling it to reach 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 149mph.
Range figures are likely out of the question since the car won’t be going into production, though Sony says it did a full road test of the Vision-S to ensure that the car and its tech comply with safety regulations.

The EV platform underpinning the Vision-S is built by Magna, a Canadian manufacturer with notable clients like GM, Ford, and Tesla. Meanwhile, Sony also partnered with Bosch, Blackberry, Continental, Nvidia, and Qualcomm for other components of the car.

The cabin features Sony’s 360 Reality Audio that puts a speaker in each of the four seats with object-based spatial audio for an immersive listening experience. There’s also a panoramic widescreen across the entire dashboard and two touchscreens for rear passengers.

In terms of adaptability, Sony’s “software-oriented design” is meant to provide over-the-air updates, a personalized user interface for each driver and a flexible automotive platform that can also be used with SUVs and vans.
“This prototype embodies our contribution to the future of mobility,” said Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, adding that its evolution would also redefine cars as a new entertainment space.

Leaked Intel document shows Core i9-10900K with 30% performance gains over Core i9-9900K – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: We know that Intel’s 10th-generation Comet Lake chips are on their way, and they include the flagship Core i9-10900K. Now, what’s purported to be an internal document from Chipzilla has shown some of the official performance gains of the ten-core CPU.
The document comes from MebiuW, a Weibo forum user, via Tom’s Hardware. The main takeaway is that the 10900K is up to 30 percent faster than the 8-core/16-thread Core-i9 9900K in threaded workloads.
The upcoming chip was tested with single- and multi-core workloads in benchmarks, including SYSmark, SPEC, XPRT, and Cinebench. The biggest performance increase over its predecessor is seen in SPEC, where the 10900K has a 30 percent uplift, while there’s a 26 percent increase over the 9900K in Cinebench R15, thanks to its two extra cores.

Single-threaded performance increases aren’t as large, with the 10900K just 3 percent faster than the 9900K in XPRT. The new CPU uses the same 14nm process, though its maximum 5.3GHz core clock is higher than the older chip’s 5.0GHz.
While the 10900K has a 125W TDP, the results also list a 250W TDP. The latter is the chip’s PL2 power state, which is required for all cores to hit the turbo frequency.
Last week, slides that revealed Intel’s entire 10-gen series leaked online. They showed the 10900K with a base frequency of 3.7GHz and a boost of 5.1GHz, reaching 5.2GHz with Turbo Boost Max 3.0. And by using Thermal Velocity Boost, which requires a high-end cooling solution, the chip can hit a single-core frequency of 5.3GHz and reach 4.9GHz on all cores. It also has 20MB of cache, Enhanced Core and Memory Overclocking, and Active Core Group Tuning, while supporting DDR4-2933, Wi-Fi 6 and 2.5G ethernet.
With these results, it appears that Intel’s 10th-gen processors could face a challenge from AMD’s Zen 2-based Ryzen 3000, which offer better multi-threaded performance, if inferior single-core performance. And with the future Zen 3/Ryzen 4000 rumored to feature massive IPC gains, Intel could be looking at some tough times ahead.
We still don’t know when the Comet Lake CPUs will arrive but expect to learn more at CES.
