Roku explains OTT audience surge as its OneView ad product comes to market- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Brands are adopting a more OTT-heavy ad strategy to reach audiences in lockdown according to Sam Bloom, chief executive officer at Camelot. OTT firm Roku has been unlocking this data to help migrate brands into the channel.
“The biggest challenge going forward is how we think about the TV business,” Bloom said, explaining how TV viewing habits have changed under lockdown. Speaking with Roku’s head of west and central ad sales, Julian Mintz in a fireside chat moderated by Tempemail senior journalist John McCarthy, he noted that video streaming platforms have started dominating viewership. US streaming giant. Roku, swiftly responded to the lockdown climate, particularly with the launch of its OneView Ad Platform. It adapted in participation of brands adopting OTT as part of their strategy.
Mintz said: “We were seeing an acceleration of OTT before COVID-19 hit. There’s been a shift away from linear TV as we move towards streaming. Nielsen recorded that, since January, streaming hours have been up in the US over 40%, whereas linear is actually down 3%. The switch towards ease, value and choice is inherent in streaming – which is only continuing as people are staying home and consuming more TV.”
With live sports events also temporarily halted on linear schedules, Mintz said that there are fewer reasons for people to continue watching it in the same way. He branded sports as the “last bastion” of linear TV and isn’t surprised by the sudden surge in viewers on streaming devices. “We’re seeing many people who were on the fence [with linear TV] about cutting the cord now jumping that fence,” said Mintz.
“Users that cut the cord and move towards streaming as their only source for TV usually don’t go back. That’s a trend we expect to continue growing.” Mintz cited Roku as a “gateway to streaming; it’s a platform for all of these channels and for all consumers.” He heralded the company’s direct relationship with its consumer base, and spoke up how its access to insights on viewership habits can help brands form their strategies in the space.
Besides appealing to consumers, Roku also benefits brands and content providers looking to break into the streaming space, according to Mintz. “On the content side, we provide a distribution mechanism,” he says. “And on the on the consumer side, we really focus around three key pillars; ease of use, the best content, and value. For brands, the TV screen is as powerful as ever, but there are key benefits that OTT offers, such as deep targeting and measurement.
Roku tracks viewer consumption, finding that consumers are now tuning into TV more throughout the day, even surpassing primetime viewership, according to Mintz. With brands still formulating their strategies on reaching viewers during the stay-at-home-period, Roku is using their unique insights to help inform brands, the leveraging data targeting, interactivity and different high impact content programs to make advertising options more impactful and efficient.
Roku’s self-serve, demand-side platform, OneView, launched during the pandemic in May 2020. It was designed to lower the bar of entry for companies seeking to enter the streaming TV space. “It’s a single platform rooted in TV data from Roku that allows brands to plan, activate and measure media not just across OTT, but on mobile and desktop as well,” said Mintz. “It’s an omni-channel solution.” OneView utilises Roku’s assets, enabling brands to plan and holistically measure across media while better connecting with consumers. “Our consumers are logged in the entire time they use Roku and so, our ability to understand identity is unparalleled in this space,” says Mintz.
Bloom thinks OneView would best suit clients with large advertisers and large customer bases. The software allows companies to gain detailed insights into anonymised consumer data so that they can then create customer segments that are of most value and determine the advertising metrics as necessary. These can be tracked on desktop and/or in-app, using various combined datasets, such as geolocation, to understand control and exposure.” This method allows advertisers to access different groups through a range of messages and removes the pain from campaign tracking.
Again, reflecting on the media buyers’ angle, Bloom added: “We’ve all had to pivot. With a platform like Roku, you can pivot much faster, with more specificity and granularity. We’ve been very impressed.” The data being gathered in mass consumption during lockdowns will come in handy when it comes to forecasting future impressions and consumption trends going forward, he added.
With viewership shifting into streaming platforms, with many leaning into the Roku ecosystem, and that of its partners, Mintz suggested that brands consider how OTT could tie into the rest of their media activity and how it could sit next to their linear TV offering. “That’s really what OneView is able to help solve,” he said. OneView offers a more holistic look at a brand’s entire media activity, while providing a simplistic breakdown of OTT.
The future is uncertain, especially as other streaming services continue to emerge, but Roku’s position as an alternative to the expensive set-top box and a funnel for top SVOD and AVOD apps could serve it well.

Roku Channel lands in UK: ‘People want free content to supplement subscriptions’- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Media streaming giant Roku is bringing its free, ad-supported TV channel to the UK, looking to offer comfortable familiar series beneath the sparring of subscription offerings like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+.
Roku made its name with internet-enabled, media streaming devices that upgraded TVs into smart TVs via their USB ports. It was the first such stick to bring Netflix to TV in 2008. Now the devices are home to around 1,000+ streaming channels, many are ad-funded, others carry a subscription. Those in the know can also use the hardware to access pirated channels. Joining them is the Roku Channel in the UK.
The channel makes available 10,000 shows and movies, for free, without login, and supported with ad breaks. After a test window in the US and Canada, its expansion betrays Roku’s broadcasting ambitions.
Rob Holmes, vice president of programming at Roku, said: “There’s increasing opportunity to subscribe to more and more services. We don’t think they’re going to keep layering more on. There’s a roof to what people are willing to pay. On Roku, we have those services but people can now pick from our free content to supplement their overall viewing.
While much is said on the draw of premium content, Roku’s looking to replicate the UK TV experience, but on demand. The likes of Homes Under the Hammer, The Commander, Ultimate Force, Fifth Gear, Skins and Britain’s Best Bakery have been heavily touted by the service, alongside movies like Get Carter, The Wicker Man and Les Miserables.
There’s a curated kids section too. Classics like Bob the Builder, Teletubbies and Fireman Sam feature against kid influencers like Ryan’s World Specials. It is more visually-intuitive than standard Roku, designed for users that may not yet know how to read.
In the UK, it boasts more than 40 content partners, including All3Media International, EndemolShine Group, FilmRise, pocket.watch and DRG. It hopes to add more in the coming months. Holmes said: “It’s not necessarily in the skillset of every content maker or producer to have the technical capabilities to create a great streaming experience.”
Stocked by such partners, the channel will be granted pride of place on Roku software, helping to ease viewers in. But helping to expand its reach is a partnership to feature on the Sky and Now TV platforms. Disney+ recently penned such a deal, showing how important a platform Sky is for these channels.
The Roku Platform
Roku boasts more than 36m active accounts around the world. It is a major benefactor of consumers cutting ties with traditional pay-TV set-ups.
It added 9.8 million active users in 2019. The increase in use and attention on its platform is seeing it make strides in advertising. In the fourth quarter of 2019, Roku’s revenue of $411m beat analyst expectations. Its monetized video advertising impressions more than doubled year-over-year.
In the UK, during a lockdown-inspired upsurge in TV and video streaming it is launching its first-party TV channel, which presents an opportunity for advertisers.
It claims a lower ad load than linear rivals, and the personalisation that digital TV offers, all bolstered by last year’s acquisition of DataXu. “Frequency capping is one of the things that resonates most with users, overall, we’re creating a really positive and favorable advertising experience.”
Instead of pre-roll, the attempt is made to insert ad breaks (shorter than linear) in the natural pauses such shows had during their initial live run. “You see less in terms of total amount of advertising per hour. We also want to enable you to get right in,” Holmes added.
He also positions his service as a means of capturing viewers and households that have slipped beyond the reach of linear TV. “They’re just streaming only now. If you want to reach those users, you have to make sure to be available on streaming platforms.”
Of course, connected TV has work to do around fraud and transparency that the tried and trusted means of TV don’t necessarily fall to, however. Roku in particular, urges marketers to buy directly from it or trusted publishers on the platform, and not to trust the whims of the open exchanges.
What’s true for advertisers, is also true for the content producers. They need to follow the eyes online.
Holmes concluded: “The 20s are going to be the decade of streaming, in terms of the time when they really make the transition.”

Roku believes half of US homes will have cut the cord by 2024 – Blog – 10 minute

Forward-looking: Streaming media player maker Roku as part of its earnings report this week predicted that by 2024, roughly half of all US homes will have cut the cord or never had traditional pay TV to begin with.
At last check a little over a year ago, research firm MoffettNathanson estimated that around 78 percent of US households still had some form of pay TV like cable or satellite. And that’s after years and years of companies like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu pushing streaming platforms down our throats so to think that the traditional pay TV industry could lose another 25 percent of subscribers in four years isn’t all that far-fetched, especially with the advent of 5G.

For those curious, Roku finished the fourth quarter with 36.9 million active accounts that collectively streamed 11.7 billion hours of content. Total revenue for the quarter ending December 31, 2019, checked in at $411.2 million, up from $275.7 million in the year-ago period and $260.9 million in the previous three-month window leading into the holidays.
An increase in operating expenses in the quarter, however, contributed to a $17.4 million loss overall.
Roku’s stock popped in after-hours trading following the close of markets yesterday but is down more than six percent on the day as of this writing.

Roku expands its TV licensing program to Europe – gpgmail


Roku TV today represents more than 1 in 3 smart TVs sold in the U.S. Now, the company is bringing its TV licensing program to European markets. At the consumer tech show IFA in Berlin, Roku announced it will now allow manufacturers to license its TV reference designs and use its Roku OS to build smart TVs for sale in Europe. It also said Hisense would be its first European Roku TV partner.

Today, the connected TV market is no longer limited to just the dongles, sticks, and streaming media players that plug into the HDMI ports of consumers’ TV sets.

Top companies like Roku, Google and Amazon are also making their operating systems and reference designs available to TV makers themselves, in a battle to gain consumer market share. Apple has been rumored to be working on its own television set powered by tvOS, as well.

Roku, to date, done well on this front in its home market, after first introducing the Roku TV platform at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2014. Hisense was then one of its first partners on the effort. Fast-forward to 2019, and there are now over 100 models available from over 10 brands in North America, and the company estimates that Roku TV is now the No. 1 selling smart TV OS in the U.S.

Roku isn’t alone in targeting Europe with its TV platform. Amazon this week announced more than 20 new Fire TV devices, 15 of which were TVs licensing its Fire OS. Many of these were also aimed at European consumers through partnerships with local brands and retailers.

The new Hisense Roku TV models will support 4K Ultra HD resolutions and HDR, and will come in sizes ranging up to 65 inches, Roku says. The models will launch in the U.K. in the fourth quarter.

“While consumers love Roku TV’s simplicity and advance features, TV manufacturers benefit from the low manufacturing cost, a variety of technology options, and support from Roku,” said Roku CEO and Founder Anthony Wood, in a statement. “The ability to quickly bring to market a leading smart TV experience that is regularly updated by Roku and is packed with entertainment gives TV manufacturers an edge in the competitive TV business. We are pleased to bring the Roku TV licensing program to Europe and look forward to the first Hisense Roku TVs in market this year,” he said.

Hulu debuts an expanded Live TV Guide on web, Apple TV and Roku – gpgmail


Yesterday, Hulu began rolling out an updated version of its mobile app sporting the brand-new interface the company first unveiled at CES in January. However, it was missing one of the pre-announced and more-requested features: Hulu’s revamped and expanded live TV guide. Today, that updated Live Guide is launching — but only to select TV platforms for the time being.

The updated Live Guide is coming today to Hulu.com on the web, Roku devices, and Apple TV.

As promised at CES, Hulu’s expanded TV guide will now allow viewers to scroll to see what’s airing in the next two weeks, as well as schedule recordings on upcoming shows, movies, and sporting events.

It’s also easier to navigate, as filters like “Recent,” “My Channels,” “News,” “Movies,” and “Kids” have now been relocated from the top of the grid to the left-hand side.

A green vertical line with a lightning bolt icon overlaid on the guide will help you to visualize how much of the program or movie has aired so far.

Users can also add channels from the guide to their “My Channels” list, which is now available from the Live Guide itself, as well as from the Home page.

This update follows Hulu’s revamp of its mobile app on Tuesday, which dropped the confusing “Lineup” section from the Home screen, while adding a way to see more content in each section.

Getting the Hulu interface right is a big priority for the company, given that its last big makeover didn’t go down all that well. At one point, a complaint about Hulu’s redesign became the most-upvoted item on the company’s user feedback forums, as many agreed that Hulu’s user interface was too difficult to navigate and had a confusing layout.

In the many months since, Hulu has been working to make changes to address user complaints by rolling out the live grid guide initially, then tweaking its appearance and functionality over time.

Unlike Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, or YouTube TV, for example, Hulu has been challenged with merging its vast on-demand library and original content with a more traditional live TV service.

Today, Hulu with Live TV is available on a range of devices — including the web, mobile, Apple TV, Fire TV, Echo Show, Xbox One, Windows 10, Chromecast, Android TV, Nintendo Switch, VIZIO SmartCast TVs, and select Samsung and LG smart TVs. But the updated Live Guide is only coming to a subset of those — Hulu.com on the web, Roku and Apple TV — as of today.

Hulu says it will roll out to more platforms and devices “soon.”

Roku launches a Kids & Family section on The Roku Channel, plus parental controls – gpgmail


Roku’s home entertainment hub, The Roku Channel, is expanding into kids’ programming. The company this morning announced plans to aggregate kids and family movies and TV alongside the channel’s other content, including its free, ad-supported movies and television, live TV, and subscriptions. In addition to the launch of the new “Kids & Family” section on The Roku Channel, Roku is also rolling out Parental Control features to give parents more control over what their kids can watch when accessing the channel.

The latter — while useful for families who don’t want the kids stumbling upon their HBO or Cinemax subscriptions — will also be a hindrance when the parents go to watch their own shows in The Roku Channel, due to Roku’s current lack of user profiles.

Meanwhile, the new kids section is not home to original content, but rather takes advantage of Roku’s ability to aggregate the streaming content on its own platform — including both free content from other channels and digital creators, as well as kid-friendly content from the family’s paid subscriptions.

At launch, the Kids & Family section will offer 7,000 free, ad-supported TV episodes and movies from 20 partners, including All Spark, A Hasbro Company, DHX Media, Happy Kids TV, Lionsgate, Mattel, Moonbug, and pocket.watch, and others. This will bring a mix of classic franchises and favorite characters to the channel, like Care Bears, The Cat in the Hat, Leapfrog, Little Baby Bum, My Little Pony, Rev & Roll, Super Mario Brothers, Thomas & Friends and more. 

This content will be mixed in with live, linear streams from Moonbug, pocket.watch, and XUMO-powered partners Ameba, BatteryPop, and KidGenius. There will also be five exclusive episodes of Ryan’s World by pocket.watch available.

In addition, the new section can pull in premium kids content from services like Blue Ant Media’s ZooMoo, CONtv, Dove Channel, HBO, Hopster, NOGGIN, Starz, or Up Faith.

That allows access to more well-known kids brands, like Bubble Guppies, Dora the Explorer, PAW Patrol, Peppa Pig, and family-friendly movies, including Adventures of Elmo in Groucholand, Muppets Take Manhattan and more.

In total, there are nearly 30 partners participating in the Kids & Family section. Notably absent, however, are top sources for kids’ shows, like Netflix and Hulu. These larger streaming services want to own the user experience end-to-end and collect their own data.

Roku says it will collect “non-user level data” from the new section, in order to see, in aggregate, which programs are popular. But it will not use data to personalize the experience for kids, target kids with ads, or make recommendations.

Instead, the content in the Kids & Family section is organized by age range, character, and theme in an interface that resembles Netflix’s Kids’ profile layout.

The ad load is also lighter than elsewhere on The Roku Channel, the company says.

“For The Roku Channel overall, we have on average, approximately half of the advertising time of traditional ad-supported linear TV. So it’s a really light ad load. And we think that something’s really resonated with users. When we look at a Kids & Family viewing experience, we want to even further reduce that advertising time. So we’re taking it down to 40% of the advertising time on traditional linear,” says Roku’s Vice President of Programming Rob Holmes.

He adds that the advertisers are kid-appropriate, and are vetted and served internally by Roku.

Ad revenue is the only way the new section will be monetized. Roku tells us the premium kids content will only be displayed to existing subscribers, as it’s not in the business of trying to upsell to children.

The launch follows several other recent developments for The Roku Channel, now one of Roku’s top five channels and a big selling point for Roku devices and TVs.

Since its 2017 launch which focused on aggregating free movies, the company has expanded into news, sports, TV shows and other entertainment offerings both from traditional studios and digital networks, as well as paid subscriptions from networks like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, EPIX and more.

Roku closed out its second quarter with 30.5 million active accounts, up by 1.4 million from the prior quarter, and revenue up 59% year-over-year to $250.1 million. The company’s platform business is now the primary revenue driver, up 86% year-over-year to reach $167.7 million in the quarter. Users streamed 9.4 billion hours of content on Roku in Q2.

Media companies have been heavily investing in kids’ programming, especially in the cord-cutting era, which gives Roku a large library to tap into. However, the biggest names in kids’ streaming — like Netflix and soon, Disney (with Disney+) — will not participate in aggregated sections like this, which ultimately limits their ability to become a true one-stop-shop for everything you want to stream.

The Roku Channel is rolling out in the U.S. today, on Roku devices, the web, the Roku mobile app, and select Samsung smart TVs.

Roku expands its free, live TV selection with 5 more channels, including fubo’s Sports Network – gpgmail


The Roku Channel continues to expand beyond ad-supported movies and premium subscriptions, with today’s announcement of the addition of several more live TV channels available to anyone with a Roku streaming device or Roku TV. The company says today it’s adding five free live TV channels to this offering, including most notably, fubo’s Sports Network.

The fubo Sports Network is streaming service fuboTV’s first-ever TV channel designed for distribution outside its own platform.

Soft-launched this June, fubo produces content for the channel, including original programming, event coverage, behind-the-scenes, and other exclusives. The network is already available to a few streaming platforms, including XUMO, Samsung TV Plus, and LG Channels (powered by XUMO.)

However, distribution to Roku’s popular entertainment hub is a big win for the new channel, given that Roku is now the top streaming device platform in the U.S., with a 39% share of streaming boxes and sticks and a 33% share of smart TV operating systems.

Other new networks arriving to The Roku Channel today include the ACC Digital Network, USA Today, Now This (news), and Comedy Dynamics.

Roku has been rapidly expanding its Roku Channel hub since it first launched in September 2017 with a focus on free, ad-supported movies — similar to Vudu’s “Movies on Us” or Tubi, for example. But shortly after, the channel began to roll out more content like news, sports, TV shows, and other entertainment offerings both from traditional studios and digital networks. This pushed the channel to become one of the most-watched on its platform.

And this year, Roku launched its own premium subscriptions alongside its free content, allowing The Roku Channel to become not just the place to find free entertainment, but where you tune in to your favorite shows as well. Today, its paid lineup includes top premium networks like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, EPIX, and many others.

The decision to invest in its own content hub gives Roku a powerful selling point for its devices — and that appears to be paying off with consumers and in terms of the company’s bottom line.

Roku recently closed out its second quarter with 30.5 million active accounts, up by 1.4 million from the prior quarter, and average revenue per user up from $19.06 in Q1 to $21.06 in Q2. Revenue was also up 45% year-over-year to $252.5 million.
