The five: robots helping to tackle coronavirus | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Boston Dynamics
Singapore park-goers have been reminded of their social distancing obligations by Boston Dynamics’ yellow “dog”. The robot hound is equipped with numerous cameras and sensors, which it can use to detect transgressors and broadcast pre-recorded warnings. The authorities have reassured locals it is not a quadruped data-collection device.

In Milton Keynes a recently expanded fleet of six-wheeled robots has been delivering food and small supermarket shopping consignments to hungry residents. The town’s large network of cycle paths makes it ideally suited to the knee-high machines, which trundle along at a top speed of 4mph. The company has been waiving its delivery charge for NHS workers during the crisis.

These Danish UV disinfection robots are being rolled out in Chinese hospitals. The machines deploy powerful UV lights, which destroy the DNA or RNA of any microorganisms in range. This effect of UV is well known but is dangerous to use if humans are nearby. However, the robots are able to learn the layout of hospitals and go about their work autonomously when medical staff aren’t present.

The UN has equipped Rwanda with five anti-epidemic robots made by Belgian company Zora Bots to help against the country’s battle with coronavirus. The robots can screen a patient’s temperature, identify people not wearing masks and monitor abnormalities in how patients sound or look. They can also be used to deliver medicine and other essentials to the infected.

In Japan, OhmniLabs’ Newme robots have been used to replace quarantined students who were unavailable to attend their graduation ceremonies. The “telepresence” robots, which had a computer tablet for a head, were draped in an academic gown and each student made a Zoom call to “receive” their degree from a university official. A similar ceremony, using robots built by students, has been held in Nanjing, China.

Microsoft sacks journalists to replace them with robots | Microsoft – Blog – 10 minute

Dozens of journalists have been sacked after Microsoft decided to replace them with artificial intelligence software.
Staff who maintain the news homepages on Microsoft’s MSN website and its Edge browser – used by millions of Britons every day – have been told that they will be no longer be required because robots can now do their jobs.
Around 27 individuals employed by PA Media – formerly the Press Association – were told on Thursday that they would lose their jobs in a month’s time after Microsoft decided to stop employing humans to select, edit and curate news articles on its homepages.
Employees were told Microsoft’s decision to end the contract with PA Media was taken at short notice as part of a global shift away from humans in favour of automated updates for news.
One staff member who worked on the team said: “I spend all my time reading about how automation and AI is going to take all our jobs, and here I am – AI has taken my job.”
The individual added that the decision to replace humans with software was risky, as the existing staff were careful to stick to “very strict editorial guidelines” which ensured that users were not presented with violent or inappropriate content when opening their browser, of particular importance for younger users.
The team working on the Microsoft site did not report original stories but still exercised editorial control, selecting stories produced by other news organisations – including the Guardian – and editing content and headlines where appropriate to fit the format. The articles were then hosted on Microsoft’s website, with the tech company sharing advertising revenue with the original publishers.
Manual curation of news stories also ensured that headlines were clear and appropriate for the format, while encouraging a spread of political opinions and avoiding untrustworthy stories, while highlighting interesting articles from smaller outlets.
Some of the journalists now facing redundancy had longstanding experience in the industry, while for others it offered a foot in the door and a job in an industry which has seen wave after wave of cuts. They now face a tough challenge to get jobs elsewhere when the whole industry is looking to cut costs. Other teams around the world are expected to be affected by Microsoft’s decision to automate the curation of its news sites.
In common with other news organisations, PA Media is facing tough financial challenges and has had to furlough some staff and ask others to take pay cuts. The company has expanded outside its traditional news agency business, recently buying stock image business Alamy shortly before the pandemic devastated the media industry.
A spokesperson for the company said: “We are in the process of winding down the Microsoft team working at PA, and we are doing everything we can to support the individuals concerned. We are proud of the work we have done with Microsoft and know we delivered a high-quality service.”
A Microsoft spokesperson said: “Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time to time, re-deployment in others. These decisions are not the result of the current pandemic.”
Many tech companies are experimenting with uses for Artificial Intelligence in journalism, with the likes of Google funding investment in projects to understand its uses, although efforts to automate the writing of articles have not been adopted widely.

Founded in 2007 as Milagrow Business and Knowledge Solutions by Rajeev Karwal, it was not until 2011 since the company forayed into AI Robotics. A huge success in the segment had Milagrow providing robots for facility management, hospitality, education, healthcare, retail as well as banking. Milagrow has also been actively involved in providing robots to battle the ongoing pandemic. The company has a manufacturing base in India that builds Milagrow Humanoid ELF.
Rajeev Karwal, Founder, Chairman – Milagrow Robots
To delve further into this, Rajeev Karwal, CEO and founder of  Milagrow Human Tech, speaks to Express Computer about their recent projects and the future of robotics.

Please share with us how your robots have been deployed in AIIMS Delhi and what are their functions?

As India’s healthcare system grapples with increasing cases of COVID-19, Milagrow announced its efforts with AIIMS, Delhi to help contain the spread of the pandemic amongst doctors and healthcare workers. Under this effort its advanced AI-powered robots – Milagrow iMap 9 and Humanoid ELF –being tested in the advanced COVID-19 ward at AIIMS, Delhi.
Manufactured in India, the Milagrow iMap 9 is a floor disinfecting robot that can navigate and sanitize the floors without any human intervention. It can destroy COVID spores on floor surfaces using a sodium hypochlorite solution, as recommended by ICMR. The robot moves around autonomously without falling, avoiding obstruction while planning its own path, guided by LIDAR and advanced SLAM technology. Milagrow’s patented Real-Time Terrain Recognition Technology (RT2RT) scans at 3600, 6 times per second to make a floor map in real-time with an accuracy of up to 8mm over a 16m distance. This enables the iMap 9 to perform successfully in the first attempt, whereas other robots can take twice or thrice the time. Additionally, the robot can do zoning, virtual blocking of avoidable areas, and sequential cleaning of zones based on specific needs.
The Milagrow Humanoid ELF enables doctors to monitor and interact with contagious COVID-19 patients remotely with no person-to-person contact, thereby significantly reducing the transmission risk. Bored patients in isolation wards can also interact with their relatives from time to time through this robot. The Humanoid ELF can navigate around the ward independently and record the activities in high definition video and audio. Offering 8 hours of battery life, it can travel about 2.9 km per hour, is 92 cms tall, has more than sixty sensors, one 3D and one HD camera, and a 10.1″ display screen. The advanced humanoid features eyes with Emotion, Open API for further development and customization. Both the Milagrow iMap 9 and Humanoid ELF come with the auto charging feature.

Could you share the results of how these robots have worked out during a pandemic?

In the fight against the spread of this epidemic you require 2 things. 1st the disinfection of the physical environments and 2nd protecting the medical staff by distancing them from patients and infected environments. Our robots do both the above functions.

How do you think Robots will change future post-COVID?

Our disinfection robots can be used to sanitize floors, windows, doors, walls, air ducts, indoor and outdoor environments. Our telemedicine, surveillance and delivery robots not only do what their names suggest but also prevent frequent and close contact of the healthcare workers with the patients and infected environments. The future will use more and more such robots where reception and contactless patient handling can be done by robots. Milagrow is also planning to enter into the rehabilitation robots also in the next few months.

What kind of infrastructure and technology will be required by companies in the near future to introduce robots?

Companies must automate all repetitive tasks where human intervention for relaxation of norms is not required. AI Software and Robots are the best way to accomplish that. Not just the workspaces but all recreation and relaxation spaces too have to be safe. Even the disinfection and sanitization tasks must not be left to human beings.

What other domains do you think Robots could be used effectively?

Robots are here to stay. In my opinion, most of the facility management, hospitality, museums,  shopping malls, and housekeeping operations will be taken over by robots forever. The repetitive tasks at the reception, guidance, and some diagnostic tasks can also be taken over by robots like the boarding pass printing machines at the airport. Telemedicine and telepresence where the doctors can attend to a patient or mark their presence in the hospital will be taken over completely by robots.

What do Milagrow’s immediate milestones look like?

Immediate and biggest milestone is to improve each robot of ours to make sure that it can function fully independent of human intervention, for a designated task, after giving it the start instructions. This will ensure that we help organizations to enforce social distancing, yet maintain their premises or do their jobs even better than before.

Fashion retailer Gap rushes robots into warehouses to assemble online orders – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

US apparel chain Gap is speeding up its rollout of warehouse robots for assembling online orders so it can limit human contact during the coronavirus pandemic.
Gap reached a deal early this year to more than triple the number of item-picking robots it uses to 106 by the fall.
Then the pandemic struck North America, forcing the company to close all its stores in the region, including those of Banana Republic, Old Navy and other brands.
Meanwhile, its warehouses faced more web orders and fewer staff to fulfill them because of social distancing rules Gap had put in place.
“We could not get as many people in our distribution centres safely,” said Kevin Kuntz, Gap’s senior vice president of global logistics fulfillment.
So he called up Kindred AI, the vendor that sells the machines, to ask: “Can you get them here earlier?”
Sourcing parts in time for the eight-foot-tall robotic stations was not simple or cheap, said Kindred’s chief operating officer Marin Tchakarov.
But the venture-backed startup was able to deploy 10 of them to Gap’s warehouse near Nashville, Tennessee and 20 near Columbus, Ohio, with plans to finish the rollout to four of Gap’s five US facilities by July, months ahead of schedule, he said.
Each machine handles work typically performed by four people, Kuntz said.
Neither the deal to triple the number of robots, nor the expedited installations, have been previously reported.
The news illustrates how the pandemic may speed up automation in the retail industry.
Companies including Gap and Amazon.com have long used such systems for a range of tasks, like moving items across warehouse floors.
Various new technologies are capable of supplanting some cashier, box packing and item picking roles that employ millions of US workers, and the pandemic is giving vendors a chance to make their case.
The firm RightHand Robotics, for instance, has helped its customer Walmart manage more online orders through greater use of its picking machines that had been deployed at several of the chain’s facilities, a person familiar with the matter said. Walmart did not answer requests for comment.
Vince Martinelli, RightHand’s head of product and marketing, declined comment on the deployment but said as a general matter, “If you’re going to have limited people in the building, the last thing you want them to do is a simple task that can be automated.”
Amazon is also relying more in the pandemic on automation for sorting items that warehouse workers have unpacked, sparing staff from having to walk by each other frequently as the more manual process once required, the company said. It is looking to roll out the technology more widely in its buildings.
Kindred, RightHand and robotics firm Berkshire Grey told Reuters they are seeing a rise in inquiries from prospective retail clients, though travel restrictions and the need to limit human contact make new installations a challenge.
The interest is no surprise: researchers from the Brookings Institution have said spurts of automation often follow economic shocks, a phenomenon they said could be replayed as retailers’ sales plunge.
“At these moments, employers shed less-skilled workers and replace them with technology and higher-skilled workers, which increases labor productivity as a recession tapers off,” the think tank’s March report said.
‘They never take breaks’
Pressure to make distribution networks more efficient is likely to increase for retailers because of their financial woes during the pandemic.
Gap last month said it faced a cash shortage, prompting it to borrow US$2.25 billion. Three-quarters of its revenue its last fiscal year came from over 3300 physical stores, most of which it has closed for weeks.
While Gap has kept shops in China in business and has started the re-opening of 800 others this month, its e-commerce operation has been a lifeline for sales.
Gap, based in San Francisco, did not disclose the financial terms of its deal with Kindred, or its base pay for staff.
The company said it has around 6500 warehouse employees, who are receiving higher wages because of the health crisis. It is limiting numbers in facilities because of US health guidance.
Kindred’s “SORT” machines help Gap assemble multi-item purchases from customers.
Goods from various online checkout carts fall down a chute and into a large basin that’s part of one of the machines.
A robotic arm above then picks each unit through suction and a physical grip, scans its bar code and places it in a bin in an adjacent cubby.
Once all the items in a customer’s order are in, a worker puts the bin on a conveyer for packing and delivery.
Kindred, with headquarters in San Francisco, is one of several startups selling artificially intelligent robots that aim to grasp almost any item quickly and without breakage.
Hundreds of thousands of US retail workers perform this task, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has said the tech is years away from taking over that work. Still, retailers can use robots to pick narrower sets of products.
Kindred’s Tchakarov said, “Our robotics systems, they never get tired. They never take breaks.”
Kindred and Gap say they aim for the technology to complement workers, not replace them. At its warehouses, Gap is still scouting for new hires – and potentially new machines.
“Should we do even more?” Kuntz asked. “How quickly can a Kindred build those machines?”

Could hotel service robots help the hospitality industry after COVID-19?- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Lead author Dr Tracy Xu, Lecturer in Hospitality at The University of Surrey’s world-renowned School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, has had her paper published in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. The research behind the paper involved speaking to 19 hotel HR experts to identify the key trends and major challenges that will emerge in the next ten years and how leaders should deal with the challenges brought about by service robot technologies.
Results showed that while service robots are anticipated to increase efficiency and productivity of hotel activities, they may also pose challenges such as high costs, skill deficits and significant changes to the organizational structure and culture of hotels. Therefore, the anticipated applications and integration of robotic technology will require leaders of the future to carefully consider the balance between the roles of service robots and human employees in the guest experience and to nurture a work environment that embraces open-mindedness and change.
The project finished in March 2020 just as COVID-19 broke out and as the virus rendered non-essential travel impossible, most hotels around the globe are feeling a catastrophic economic impact. There is now even more interest in developing innovative ways of deploying service robots across all economic sectors to limit human interaction. Considering the current pandemic, many industries are having to reinvent processes and systems to cope with a new isolated way of life. Robotic interaction in hotels could facilitate more socially distanced models of operation to enable a safer and faster reopening and recovery of some hotels.
Dr Xu said: “Application of service robots in the hotel industry is on the rise. With the added factor of a need to reassure potential guests that their stays will be compatible with minimised social contact and human interaction, this process could be accelarated. During the lockdown period it is likely that hotel managers will be planning for a ‘fresh start’ in the recovery and rebuilding period after the social isolation restrictions have been lifted and this is predicted to have a positive stimulus on the adoption of service robots.
“The anticipated applications and integration of robotic technology will require leaders of the future to carefully consider the balance between the roles of service robots and human employees in the guest experience and to nurture a work environment that embraces open-mindedness and change.”
Dr Xu was joined in her research by fellow Surrey colleague Mark Ashton, Teaching Fellow, and Jason Stienmetz, Assistant Professor at MODUL University Vienna.
Ashton said: “This is the first type of study to examine hospitality leadership and human resource management in the context of robotized hotels and at a time where hotels seem to need it most. Forward-thinking businesses who are proactively prepared for the introduction of these exciting new technologies will benefit in the long term.”

ITI Cuttack develops low cost robots to combat COVID-19- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Joining the fight against Covid-19, the government-run Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Cuttack has developed two low cost robots, which can save health workers from the infectious virus and reduce the need for personal protective equipment.
The cost of each robot is expected to be around Rs 2.5 lakh, ITI-Cuttack principal Hrushikesh Mohanty said.
In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the institute had constituted an innovation team that developed the robots in its laboratory, in association with SAK Robotics Lab, a start-up, Mohanty told PTI.
One of the two robots is a service robot, named CO-BOT (Corona Combat Robot), which can move on wheels and has a humanoid structure. Its hand-like structures can hold a tray and carry a load upto 20 kg, the principal said.
It can be used in COVID-19 hospitals for carrying food, water and medicines to and from patients. “This will reduce the risks to attendants serving the COVID-19 patients,” he said.
The wireless communication protocols being used to control the robot can be further programmed with navigation and mapping to make them work autonomously in a hospital ward, Mohanty said.
The second one, named NIGA-BOT, is a telepresence robot which can be used for surveillance and teleconsultation by doctors who can interact remotely with patients through live video streaming. This robot is also enabled with a wheeled mobile platform and has an interactive device for video calling.
NIGA-BOT can be used by health workers who have to make several rounds to the patients bed for monitoring their health.
“This will protect the doctors and nurses from contracting the virus during such interactions.
“All these innovations would lead to reduced need for more Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and could be a saviour for health workers,” he said.
These are low cost robots developed by the institute to meet the emergent needs following the coronavirus outbreak, Mohanty said.
Once medical professionals spell out their specific requirements, new features will be integrated to the robots, he said.
The office of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has also hailed the job done by ITI, Cuttack in collaboraton with SAK Robotics for using their skill to strengthen Odishas fight against COVID-19.
Founder and CEO of SAK Robotics Lab, Sakyasingha Mohapatra said, the start-up has provided the required technology in the joint venture to strengthen the battle against the deadly virus.
“The institute has a dream and desire to use industry automation to impact the lives of ordinary people,” the ITI principal said.

Shopping robots come into their own in locked-down English town – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A fleet of robots on wheels that deliver shopping in the English town of Milton Keynes have seen their popularity surge as residents are stuck indoors due to the coronavirus lockdown.
The robots, which come up roughly to an adult’s knee height and look like smooth white plastic boxes mounted on six black wheels, are a familiar sight in the town, where they have been delivering groceries for over two years.
But since the government imposed strict social distancing measures on March 23, the devices have been busier than ever, delivering for free to Tempemail Health Service (NHS) staff and facing increased demand from the general public.
“Right now we are offering free delivery to all NHS workers within the community. We want to make life a little bit easier for these people in these very, very stressful times,” said Henry Harris-Burland, of Starship, the company that makes the robots.
“Lots of them are doing … 80-hour weeks and they don’t have time to go to the local grocery store, so they use our robots for their shopping,” he said. “We’re honoured that we can be part of that solution.”
The robots have what looks like an antenna, topped with a small red flag to make it easier to spot them as they do their rounds. They are big enough to hold several bags of shopping as well as a pack of bottles.
Starship has doubled its fleet of delivery robots in Milton Keynes to 70 in the past three weeks. Harris-Burland said they had completed 100,000 autonomous deliveries in the town.
“Lots of the residents have been reaching out to us online asking us to deliver into their neighbourhood,” he said.
“We’re doing everything we can as quickly as possible to expand to offer this service to more people, especially at this really important time.”

Robots replace Japanese students at graduation amid coronavirus – Strategy – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Spring graduation ceremonies in Japan have been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, but students at one school were able to attend remotely by controlling avatar robots while logged on at home.
The robots, dubbed “Newme” by developer ANA Holdings, were dressed in graduation caps and gowns for the ceremony at the Business Breakthrough University in Tokyo.
The robots’ “faces” were tablets that displayed the faces of the graduates, who logged on at home and controlled the robots via their laptops.
One by one, the robots motored toward the podium to receive their diplomas. School staff clapped and said “congratulations!” as University President Kenichi Ohmae placed the diplomas on a rack mounted on the robot’s midsection.
“I think this is truly a novel experience to receive a certificate in a public area while I am in a private space,” Kazuki Tamura said via his computer avatar when receiving his master’s degree diploma.
The university hopes its approach can be adopted by other schools looking to avoid mass gatherings.
Reflecting the human world, however, the school limited the ceremony to just four graduates so that the robots could practice social distancing amid the pandemic.

From drones to robots to wearables, how the world is using technology for fighting Coronavirus- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Every disaster has a lesson for us, and if we do not take lessons from history, history more than often repeats itself. While India has had the experience of handling natural disasters like tsunamis and floods regularly, it has never been exposed to a pandemic like Coronavirus. Since the outbreak started, more than 1,000 cases have been reported in India.
India can take a cue from China, which has heavily used technology to fight the deadly coronavirus. For example, China is using drones that allow its authorities to scan through large crowds. Drones are equipped with thermal imaging and can quickly detect people who have a fever. Chinese giant, Baidu has developed an AI-powered non-contact infrared sensor system that has been used in places like railway stations to quickly detect a person suspected of a fever.
In Taiwan, officials have integrated the national health insurance database with its immigration and customs database to quickly identify high risk individuals based on individual doctor visits and travel history. These individuals were also tracked through their mobile phones to ensure that high risk individuals were quarantined at home.
To ensure that health caretakers are not put at risk, China has also deployed robots and drones to remotely disinfect hospitals and deliver food. In some places, ultraviolet disinfection robots are being deployed by hospitals to kill airborne and surface bacteria viruses. Autonomous or self driving vehicles have also proved to be a big help in helping the fight against Coronavirus. In China, a self driving startup called Neolix, has deployed nearly 200 tiny robotic vehicles to deliver medical supplies as well as food to health workers.
In China, a medical AI firm, inferVISION, has deployed its solution to help imaging departments quickly give a diagnosis. As the outbreak has put severe pressure, the AI solution is helping hospitals with limited medical resources to quickly screen out suspected coronavirus infected patients for further diagnosis and treatment. Similarly, Alibaba has claimed that its new AI algorithm can detect the coronavirus in CT scans with 96% accuracy within just 20 seconds.
Mobile apps have tracking capabilities, and authorities are using it to prevent the spread of the disease. South Korea, for example, which has become one of the countries to be affected the most with more than 6,000 cases, has developed a smartphone app to monitor quarantined citizens. These citizens will be monitored for symptoms and tracked to make sure that they stay at home. In China, citizens can install an app that gives people to give a red, yellow or green code to indicate the level of risk.
In a global pandemic, technology tools are vital weapons for effectively monitoring and controlling disease outbreaks, as humans simply cannot operate and match the scale and speed at what AI powered machines can operate.

Kerala has made a concrete place for itself in the startup archives of India. Also, sadly Kerala is one of the highest affected stats with the Covid-19 outbreak. However, the good news is that a couple of bots installed at the Integrated Startup Complex, Kochi are creating a stir on social media.
Kochi-based startup Asimov Robotics, has designed these bots that have mastered the art of offering hand sanitisers, and face masks to visitors and also brief them about the deadly Coronavirus. These robots are regularly cleaning the handlebars of the entrance door with sanitisers. It’s learnt that more and more features are being added to the bots, like an automated hand sanitiser spray and temperature check as a mandatory procedure. These robots would also be trained to disinfect people’s mobile phones, currency and coins.
These robots are from the Saya Bot series, that are developed by Asimov Robotics from the Kerala Startup Mission. As of now, they are deployed at the entrance of the integrated startup complex in Kalamassery. Also, these robots would be stationed in public places soon, where they would be approaching people and help in spreading the message.
Asimov Robotics said that there were two main reasons for having robots for awareness campaigns. They are of the opinion that not too many people are taking the situation seriously, inspite of the media disseminating proper information. Quite interestingly, these humanoid robots are supplemented with audio-visual aids that can help in creating awareness.
Also, the robots give accurate information effortlessly, by answering queries that are related to coronavirus.
