Govt reveals $1.35bn investment in cybersecurity over next decade – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The government has unveiled a $1.35 billion investment to beef up Australia’s cybersecurity capabilities over the next decade, a third of which will go into a new team of 500 specialists.
The investment is being called the “largest ever … in cybersecurity” in the country, and will be known as the CESAR package.
CESAR stands for cyber enhanced situational awareness and response.
“My government’s record investment in our nation’s cybersecurity will help ensure we have the tools and capabilities we need to fight back and keep Australians safe,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement.
The CESAR package confirms what has been rumoured to have been in the works for the past fortnight after Morrison fronted a surprise Friday morning press conference with news of sustained but unspecified foreign actors targeting critical Australian interests.
Of the $1.35 billion, $470 million – about one-third – will be put into assembling a team of over 500 new security specialists that will sit within the Australian Signals Directorate.
Some of the new cash injection will also go towards building Australia’s offensive capabilities, an expansion that was first flagged by the ASD in early April.
This is said to include the ability for government officials and industry to recognise and block attack traffic from even entering the country.
The government said it would put “over $31 million” into enhancing the ASD’s ability “to disrupt cybercrime offshore, taking the fight to foreign criminals that seek to target Australians, and providing assistance to federal, state and territory law enforcement agencies.”
A new cyber threat-sharing platform will be built for $35 million, “enabling industry and government to share intelligence about malicious cyber activity, and block emerging threats in near real-time.”
Additionally, $12 million will go “towards new strategic mitigations and active disruption options, enabling ASD and Australia’s major telecommunications providers to prevent malicious cyber activity from ever reaching millions of Australians across the country by blocking known malicious websites and viruses at speed.”
Other investments detailed this morning include at least:

$118 million to expand ASD’s data science and intelligence capabilities on emerging threats
$62 million to deliver a national situational awareness capability “to better enable ASD to understand and respond to cyber threats on a national scale”.
$20 million to establish “cutting-edge research laboratories to better understand threats to emerging technology, ensuring that ASD continues to provide timely and authoritative advice”.

Not all of CESAR was announced today: some parts will be held back and “ detailed in our 2020 cyber security strategy”, the government said.
The timing of that strategy’s release was not updated, though it was recently listed as “the coming months”.
Of the $1.35 billion, $748 million was announced today, leaving some $602 million still to be allocated.
The full investment would also mean relying on successive governments to carry through with the original plan.
In its entirety, the CESAR package “will put our nation on the front foot in combating cyber threats and our investment in a cyber security workforce will help ensure we have the people we need to meet future cyber challenges,” Defence Minister Senator Reynolds said.
“For example, this package will enable ASD and Australia’s major telecommunications providers to prevent malicious cyber activity from reaching millions of Australians by blocking known malicious websites and computer viruses at speed,”
“This package is one part of our $15 billion investment in cyber and information warfare capabilities that will form part of Defence’s 2020 Force Structure Plan to address the rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape.”

Sony Finally Reveals the PlayStation 5 | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The PlayStation 5 was finally revealed, after months of waiting, at Sony’s Future of Gaming Livestream event yesterday.
The console’s final design is vastly different from the company’s previous iterations. No longer will the PlayStation be a matte black box, but a gleaming white machine finished with aesthetic curves and wings.

To accompany the reveal, Sony released a video of the new hardware. Typical of the Japanese conglomerate, the PS5 is introduced through a highly artistic and mysterious reveal complete with waves of glowing orbs mapping out the PlayStation’s signature buttons – triangle, circle, X and square.

Along with the reveal of the normal PlayStation 5 is the reveal of the system’s digital-only edition that lacks a Blu-Ray disc drive and is far sleeker by comparison.
Both PS5 editions. The digital-only edition is on the right, note its lack of disc drive.
PlayStation 5’s Digital Edition of the console is for downloading games only. Sony assures that both Editions will feature the same gameplay.
“The PS5 gameplay experience will be the same, so the choice is all yours. While there are some slight differences in the look of each model, for the overall design, we wanted to deliver a console that’s bold, stunning, and unlike any previous generation of PlayStation,” the company states on their YouTube channel.
Originally scheduled to be revealed on 4 June 2020, the company decided to postpone the event after civil unrest began to explode in the United States.
System Specs
As previously revealed, the PlayStation 5 is running on a system similar to a high-end gaming PC. It features an 8 core Zen 2-based AMD CPU running at 3.5ghz. Its GPU is completely customised and based off of AMD’s next-generation RDNA 2 architecture capable of generating 10.28 teraflops.
The whole system shares 16GB of GDDR6 memory with a 256bit interface and has an 825GB custom SSD for internal storage.
Sourced from Eurogamer
Sony has also added a number of new accessories with the console. Including a wireless headset, a camera – probably for use with PSVR – a charging dock for the controllers, a media remote for users who use their consoles to watch Netflix, for example.
Sourced from Tech Weez.
The camera has dual 1080p lenses that be used for streaming, and the media remote will have a mic for voice commands.
Social Media’s Reaction
Twitter immediately began a torrent of opinions and jokes about the console. A lot of them pointing out that the new system looks a lot like an internet router.

Commonwealth Bank reveals new chief digital officer – Finance- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has doubled down on its fascination with how Scandinavian economies are quietly reshaping digital finance and commerce, luring across a key executive from Denmark’s Danske Bank to become its new chief digital officer.
Australia’s largest institution has confirmed that Fredrik Lindstrom, who is currently group chief information officer for Danske Bank, will replace Pete Steel in the increasingly important CDO role that straddles technology, customer experience, service design and delivery and marketing.
Steel, who has traded in his banker’s chips to hit the consulting circuit with Boston Consulting Group, had been regarded as one of the key players in maintaining CBA’s technological competitive advantage over its rivals by creating new ‘sticky’ services that provided experiential reasons for customers to stay beyond price and scale.
Two of the big moving pieces in CBA’s digital playbook – aside from ambushing its rivals by breaking an unofficial boycott of Apple Pay – have been the relaunch of the bank’s core mobile app and its complimentary Benefits Finder service that helps eliminate friction in dealing with government.
While those advances have positioned CBA well for likely greater integration and automation of transactions between banks and government services like tax, welfare and property, the CBA has also been building a buffer against a heavy fall in once lucrative credit card usage.
The CBA’s major hedge against plummeting growth in credit card issuance – the bank is Mastercard’s marquee issuer in Australia – has been to take a 5.5 percent equity stake in high-profile Swedish buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) service Klarna, joining luminaries including rapper Snoop Dogg on the shareholder register.
Notably, Klarna’s Australian arm is a 50/50 joint venture with CBA, giving the bank skin in the game against the likes of Afterpay that have skilfully exploited the consumer shift from credit to debit instruments by foisting even more transaction cost onto merchants – though BNPLs argue it’s still a fair deal because their customers are trade retailers would otherwise never see.
While Afterpay might still have the halo of a local tech unicorn stock (though these days even church tech platform PushPay’s market cap is more than $1 billion) Klarna is arguably a more developed, sophisticated and mature e-commerce ecosystem that lets retailers refine their digital offers for maximum yield.
At more than 15 years old, Klarna also appears to have a more socially conscious business model than some of its rivals, relying more on upselling its merchants than slugging customers with late fees to generate income.
That ethos is also more prevalent in Scandinavian and Nordic economies where government and financial institutions have traditionally leaned toward, or grown out of, a more collectivist environment like some European banks, a scenario more common in nations with smaller populations.
That’s not to say Scandi banks don’t have their own scandals, with Danske having one of the more conspicuous regulatory run-ins over €200 billion in transactions over nine years linked to Russian money laundering via its Estonian operation that broke cover in 2017.
While the Danish laundering scandal, like Australia’s, cost Danske’s former chief executive Thomas Borgen his job after an investigation, the stakes and players involved are in a whole different league compared to local thugs overstuffing ATMs with illicit cash.
Danske’s laundering scandal, according reports based on leaked documents in Danish newspaper Berlingske, included so-called ‘mirror’ transactions made by relatives of Russian president Vladimir Putin as well as the FSB, Russia’s main intelligence service.
Having triggered multiple raids and arrests across a number of countries in addition to embroiling other banks, the Danske scandal has not been without human cost.
In September 2019 Aivar Rehe, the former head of Danske Bank’s Estonian operation, was found dead at his home in Tallinn, with police reportedly determining the death to be a suicide, and prosecutors subsequently saying Rehe was not a suspect in their criminal investigations.
Denmark’s biggest bank in 2017 also retained the services of IBM-owned regulatory house cleaners Promontory Financial Group to run an independent investigation of how the laundering occurred, the same firm Westpac is using to get to the root of its problems.

Westpac CIO Craig Bright reveals iOS app overhaul – Finance – Cloud – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Regulators may be persistently grinding away at Westpac’s reputation, but for its chief information officer, Craig Bright, the mission at hand is remaining doggedly focused on delivering the best outcomes for customers on the platforms they want, how they want them.
Less than a month after Westpac finally shipped its own Apple Pay release, no small feat considering the bank’s Hogan legacy overhead, Bright has revealed Westpac is planning to shift to its own iOS native app to customers by later this year.
“We’re on track to deliver our new mobile app, which will be a native iOS app, come September,” Bright told iTnews.
“The fundamental difference is the shift to a native iOS app. We’ve traditionally run combination of, sort of, web app through to both internet and mobile.
“With this we move to a native app. It’s a more intuitive experience so it’s a fresher look. It’s a more intuitive use.”
App wars are nothing new between banks, but what is notable about Bright’s approach is the tenacity to turn challenge into opportunity, or what might be otherwise be coined the ‘Bradbury effect’, or last mover advantage.
Boiled down to simple terms it means that a sufficiently skilled tech leader can enter the race a bit late, bank the big wins and eschew the failures.
Bright can’t and won’t talk about Westpac’s issues with AUSTRAC that have the bank before the courts. What is clear however, suppliers say, is that Bright appears laser focused on avoiding any possible repeat scenario of the incident.
Which is understandable.
Not that customers notice such efforts, even if shareholders do. Customers, Bright maintains, want something they can hold, feel and touch.
With the CBA beating it’s chest about it’s app being able to put customers on the automation drip to government funds, there is some initial appeal, though maybe not if you are looking for a mortgage and trying to demonstrate independence from government welfare.
Though that could soon change, given the pressure on banks to allow people to stay in their homes.
Bright is playing the utility card hard.
“Generally, the focus is really on usability and simplicity of the mobile experience,” Bright tells iTnews, adding that an Android revamp is just around the corner after the Apple launch.
“We will move to android after that, yes,” Bright says.
That timing says a bit around Westpac’s install base and why it caved on Apple.
And who banks now see their main competitive threat as.
It’s also starting to make sense as to why Westpac shipped eftpos Apple Pay connectivity out of the box, following ANZ’s connection.
It’s starting to look like Australian’s blossoming generation of grey beards aren’t are just looking older and wiser; they’re a fair bit more picky and cynical too.
And let’s face it. Merchant terminal fee hikes ain’t coming back anytime soon.

NAB reveals swag of tech updates – Finance – Cloud – Security – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The great lockdown of 2020 may soon be gradually easing in some states, but banks are still doing their level best to give customers better options than visiting a branch as their online services get a rapid-fire COVID-19 makeover to cater for people stuck at home.
The Tempemail Australia Bank on Friday released details of a swag of new additions and digital enhancements to its well established online services, ranging from the rather contemporary NAB WhatsApp customer service channel to boosting existing voice biometrics and cheque digitisation facilities.
The steps might sound small, but for a bank that has always prided itself on a more personal touch for business and retail customers than larger institutions, keeping the convenience and engagement factor there for online services when there is no walk-in smile is a serious business.
Even more so now that former CBA retail chief Ross McEwan has set his sights on lifting the NAB’s occasionally patchy online performance to once again steal share from its peers and become envied for its customer service smarts.
WhatsApp au go go
“We launched WhatsApp to provide an alternative banking from home experience, giving our customers the choice to connect with us via a channel they’re already using in their day to day,” NAB’s head of social media Reveka Katakis said on the bank’s tech blog.
“As part of this launch, we also implemented a straightforward bot that answers frequently asked questions — customers can interact with the bot to get instant answers about how they can self-serve online.”
Biometric viva voce
Paula Constant, executive general manager of NAB’s consumer direct arm, was another senior staffer offering up the fruits of NAB’s cultivation of tech, pointing to its now highly mature voice biometrics function that was first rolled out more than a decade ago.
Voice biometrics, indeed voice telephony per se, may have recently been viewed as a glide-path technology in the age of FaceID and payments initiated within apps, but for millions of senior Australian’s who prefer to live without the likes of Twitter it’s the liquid gold of customer retention.
The customer journey is not hard to imagine: customers comfortable with the likes of viewing paper or online statements suddenly need to hit NAB’s inbound contact centre lines to find a way to pay bills they might otherwise go to the Post Office to transact.
“This technology has been crucial in the last few weeks (during the COVID pandemic) to be able to speed-up the authentication process for the thousands of customers that have calling us for assistance,” Constant said.
“We want to assure customers that keeping their information safe and secure is our highest priority. This technology is among the strongest in the industry. It is highly sensitive and sophisticated enough to detect if someone is impersonating you. It can even recognise you if you have a cold or sore throat.”
Which is great, but possibly all the more reason to stay away from a branch for the time being.
NAB also says that VoiceID will also soon be extended to business customers as well as consumers, which could make business customers wonder why they didn’t get it sooner.
Business customers – the kind NAB’s shareholders once loved but might now be somewhat concerned about, especially on the retail front – also get an upgrade.
Apple iMessage integration
NAB is claiming bragging rights as “the first bank in Australia to launch iMessage support for our customers” via Apple Business Chat that it says lets “users to easily communicate to NAB via their iMessage app to support their simple servicing needs.”
Or perhaps not so simple emotionally if you view it from the perspective of a struggling customer who prefers not to have to talk to someone directly and needs a written record of the advice. Let’s face it, email as a channel for banks has been pretty shot for a while.
“Hi. Due to my husband’s and my capacity to work during the current restrictions being enforced for COVID-19, we are having trouble coming up with the total amount to be paid on my credit card,” NAB cites as one example.
Our business has been severely impacted by Coronavirus and I want to find out what we can do with payments of loans and credit cards.
Cue the shift to a lower-priced unsecured, or better yet secured credit option, that may not put that couple’s house on the line in six month’s time.
Ross McEwan may have been pipped at the post for a local top bank job before he left Australia to resuscitate the Royal Bank of Scotland. It doesn’t look like he’s about to waste the COVID-19 crisis either, and for NAB customers and shareholders alike, that may not be such a bad thing.

Drake reveals why he decided to share photos of son Adonis on Instagram- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Drake has opened up about his decision to start sharing photos of his son Adonis on social media, two years after his birth.
In March, the rapper posted a series of photos of his son for the very first time, alongside a lengthy caption about how much he was missing his friends and family during lockdown.
The photos showed the two-year-old being hugged by Drake and his mother, artist Sophie Brussaux, and playing in a white electric ride-on car with a giant teddy bear.

“I love and miss my beautiful family and friends,” Drake wrote. “I can’t wait for the joyful day when we are all able to reunite.”
Now, Drake has revealed why he posted the images and admitted that he found the process “freeing”.
During an interview with Lil Wayne on Young Money Radio with Lil Wayne, the 33-year-old said: “I posted those pictures, it was great for me. It was great to just share that with the world.
“I wasn’t even anything I talked to anybody about or anything I planned. I just woke up one morning, and I was like, you know what? This is just something that I want to do.”
The rapper went on to explain how hiding his son was preventing them from making memories together, saying: “I want to be able to go places with my son and share memories with my son.

“I don’t want to feel like, just, because of a life choice I made to be a celebrity, that I got to make everybody live under this blanket. I just wanted to free myself of that [sic].”
Ms Brussaux have birth to Adonis in October 2017. However, Drake kept the birth of his first child a secret until the release of his album Scorpion in June 2018.

The rapper confirmed he had a child with a series of lyrics in the song “Emotionless”, which read: “I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world/I was hiding the world from my kid.
“I had to come to terms with the fact that it’s not a maybe. That s*** is in stone, sealed and signed. She’s not my lover like Billie Jean, but the kid is mine. S***, we only met two times.”

Telstra reveals facility outage numbers from bushfire crisis – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Few assets, such as this mobile facility at Surf Beach in NSW, were fire-damaged. (Credit: Telstra)

Telstra has revealed that 329 network facilities suffered over four-hour outages due to bushfires over six weeks last summer, though only around five were the direct result of fire damage.
Over 70 percent of the outages were in NSW with a further 22 percent in Victoria and the rest in South Australia, the telco said. [pdf]
About one-third of the facilities related to the mobile network while the rest were for fixed-line, Telstra said.
However, it noted that Telstra-supplied facilities used by NBN Co were not included in the tally. “Only NBN Co is able to provide a comprehensive view of impacts to its network facilities,” Telstra said.
Telstra said impacted network facilities included “mobile network radio equipment, mobile towers, fixed and mobile equipment huts, transmission infrastructure, power systems and roadside cabinets, among other things.”
The vast majority of facility outages between December 19 last year and the end of January 2020 were the result of all power to the site being lost.
“Mains power loss was due either to the proactive de-energisation of the power grid to reduce fire risk, or to power infrastructure damage caused by fire,” Telstra said.
In NSW and SA, fire damage was the root cause of network facility outages in only “1.4 percent and 4.5 percent of cases respectively,” Telstra said.
However, a not insignificant number of outages were attributed to “other” – which Telstra explained meant there were “multiple possible contributing factors, including power outages, fluctuating power (power going on/off in quick succession), hardware failure and/or high temperature.”
“In these instances, it is often not possible to say with any certainty which factor(s) were the root cause.”
Telstra said its response to the bushfire crisis was organised around “three-day, three-week and three-month time horizons”.
These corresponded to periods of crisis response, service restoration and network recovery respectively.
Much of Telstra’s experience in this regard appears to be reflected in an industry submission to the Royal Commission into Tempemail Natural Disaster Arrangements.
Telstra made much the same recommendations as the broader telco industry did, seeking – for example – better information from utilities and deeper visibility into rapidly evolving fire situations.
Telstra said it often picked up information on electricity services from public sources, and there were instances where it sent truck rolls with generators based on outdated information.
“Apart from the potential for wasted effort transporting and connecting a generator at a site just as power resumes, it can also put our staff at greater risk attempting to reach such sites, and / or may tie up [emergency services] unnecessarily in providing escorts into affected areas,” Telstra said.
“An example of the benefits of early notification of de-energisation occurred during the recent bushfires in North East Victoria.
“The relevant energy provider notified Telstra (through the State Control Centre) that power was going to be turned off to the town of Euroa, through which one of Telstra’s inland inter-capital transmission links runs.
“In response to that notification, the Euroa site load (i.e. energy requirement) and battery reserves were quickly assessed, and a generator capable of supporting the network and on-site facilities infrastructure was deployed to site within four hours.
“It is also important that we are informed when re-energisation is going to occur, to ensure we do not deploy a generator to an affected site shortly before mains power is turned back on.”
Telstra said that improved information flows between energy providers and telecommunications providers would allow telcos “to better manage and predict disruptions to their networks, and to coordinate the deployment of limited resources across their networks, with the aim of minimising service disruption to customers in critical times.”
