Sony Reveals New ‘DualSense’ Controller for PlayStation 5 | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from The Verge

Sony has just unveiled the controller for its next-gen console: the DualSense.
The new controller marks the biggest departure for the company’s controller design in its history of PlayStation consoles since the PlayStation One was released in 1994.
The controller is very aesthetically different to the previous generation’s DualShock 4 controller – appearing more akin to the controllers used by Xbox with its rounded shape and pale bone colour scheme. However, it does maintain the same button layout from the previous generation – except now the PS Button has changed to appear less like a button and more like a grooved logo.
Sony’s new DualSense controller compared to the PS4’s DualShock 4.
According to The Verge, the new controller has a few important changes on the inside as well. These changes include a replacement to the previous generation’s “Rumble” technology with the recently announced haptic feedback. The new controllers also feature “adaptive triggers” that can adjust their resistance to different gameplay effects.

The DualSense also features an integrated microphone so players no longer require headsets to communicate in multiplayer, along with new USB-C ports.
The “share” button has been renamed the “create” button, which will offer “new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world.”
Features that remain from the previous generation include the middle-mounted touchpad that proved the previous generation’s most important innovation. The colour bar that was behind the controller has been moved to the left and the right of the touchpad as it has been slightly raised. Sony is also sticking with the symmetrical button layout with the D-pad and face buttons still on the top half of the controller, and the analog sticks on the bottom.
Sony has announced that it will be offering more details soon, including release price. The PS4’s DualShock 4 retailed at release for $59.99, for example – the DualSense is expected to be more expensive.
The controllers new colour scheme and aesthetic could be a spoiler for the PlayStation 5’s final appearance. Perhaps Sony is changing its matte black colour scheme and replacing it with the pale white of its original console.
Twitter’s Reaction
When the DualSense was announced Twitter exploded as the phrase “Xbox Controller” began trending worldwide.
Users have been comparing the new controller to Xbox’s own controller design, insinuating that Sony has ‘copied’ their competition.

PlayStation 5: Sony reveals new DualSense controller | Games – Blog – 10 minute

Sony has revealed the new controller for its forthcoming PlayStation 5 console. Named DualSense, the pad is a major departure from the DualShock series in design terms, with a two-tone body and chunkier form-factor breaking away from the slimmer look of the past two decades.
The key new addition is haptic feedback – replacing the rumble feature of previous controllers– providing levels of resistance to player movement by simulating, for example, the slow grittiness of driving through mud in an offroad racing game. The two triggers will also feature adaptive feedback in the trigger buttons, so players can feel the tension and release when, say, firing an arrow from a bow.
Certain elements, such as the DualShock 4’s central touchpad, have been retained, although the light bar, which was previously on the front panel of the pad, is now on the face. A mic has also been added so that players are able to chat to friends without having to plug in a headset. The power cable now uses a USB-C port.

“Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box,” said senior vice president of platform planning and management, Hideaki Nishino, in the announcement blogpost. “We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!”
Finally, the DualShock 4’s share button, which allowed PlayStation 4 owners to quickly post screenshots and videos of their games, has been retained, but is now called the create button. “We’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves,” wrote Nishino. “We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.”
The announcement of the controller comes just after a lengthy online presentation by PlayStation 5 system architect, Mark Cerny, in which he revealed the console’s technical specifications and reiterated Sony’s desire to find new ways to immerse players in game worlds. It seems the use of haptic feedback in the DualSense controller is designed to accompany the console’s Tempest 3D sound engine, providing clearer, more definitive, placement of in-game audio.
The look of the PlayStation 5 itself is yet to be revealed, although the new controller suggests a likely move away from the black box design of the PS4. The machine is still slated for a winter 2020 release, similar to the Xbox Series X console from Microsoft. However, both consoles may face manufacturing difficulties due to coronavirus lockdowns in China, where components are made.

India Poised to Lead the World in the Next Five Years in Real-Time Payments Volume, New ACI Worldwide Research Reveals- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
More than half a trillion real-time payments transactions will be processed over the next five years, according to Prime Time for Real-Time, a new global report from ACI Worldwide and Global Data. This industry-first research, which analyzes global real-time, account-to-account payment volumes and forecasts across 30 global markets, projects a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 23.4 percent from 2019 to 2024.
According to the report, India is also set to lead the world in the next five years in overall real-time payments volumes as real-time payments transaction volumes are set to grow from 15.3 billion in 2019 to a staggering 52.8 billion in 2024.
The new report outlines the five strongest indicators of a market’s real-time payments success. A national system or individual country does not need all of these indicators in place for initial adoption, but a combination of two or more is enough to drive the initial growth explosion.

Centrally Driven Payments Modernization Initiatives—The backing of a motivated market force, whether governmental or collaborative stakeholders, is key for countrywide change—as countries like India, Nigeria and Malaysia have proven.
Seamless and Integrated Payments Experience with Rich Overlay Services—End users want convenience, and unsurprisingly, real-time growth is strong where access to easy-to-use payment types exists for both business and consumer users.
Connected Ecosystem of Players Enriching User Experience—When a market has broad ecosystem acceptance, combined with the convenience of rich overlay services and strong functionality, real-time payments can grow explosively.
Digital Payments Maturity Level and Ingrained Payment Habits—In regions with historic reliance on paper-based payments such as cash and checks, real time provides an easy digital alternative—and when this shift is backed by a government initiative, adoption can be significant.
Openness to Alternative Payment Methods—Alternative payment methods like mobile wallets continue to surge. Adoption is greater when real-time overlay services are offered, particularly the integration of real-time payment capabilities within mobile wallets.

“Recent events have given digital payments mainstream attention, and faster access to funds for individuals and small business has never been more critical,” said Jeremy Wilmot, group president, Banks & Intermediaries, ACI Worldwide. “The financial inclusion benefits of payments digitalization, including the launch of real-time payments, should not be overlooked, and they should be considered in tandem with national and global economic benefits. We see that internet access is now a necessity, and the ability to transact online is inextricable from the need for connectivity. Everyone needs to be prepared to handle the growth of real-time transactions, as well as digital and alternative payments and non-financial transactions.”
Additional Key Findings

India has demonstrated robust centrally driven payments modernization initiatives giving it an edge over the rest of the countries. Furthermore, UPI has witnessed phenomenal growth in P2P transactions with volumes and the number of transactions growing exponentially. One of the key factors in this “hockey stick” upward trajectory was India’s choice to implement a four-party model for IP. This model is usually seen in mature card markets, but India reimagined this status quo to enable access to UPI services for banks, processors, merchants and fintechs.
Additional key countries and regions to watch for real-time payments growth include the U.S. (42.1% CAGR growth), the Nordic countries of the P27 initiative (20.9% CAGR growth), ASEAN (39.0% CAGR growth) and Europe; these countries and regions already have one or more of the above indicators in place.
Among the countries relatively new to real-time payments, Malaysia, Finland and Belgium are predicted to have the most exponential growth in the next five years, with an expected CAGR of 176.5 percent, 90 percent and 67.9 percent, respectively.

“Our research reveals that despite vastly different cultural, economic and technological factors, there are a number of traits that determine if real-time transaction volumes will see a rapid upward trajectory, and within what timeframe,” commented Craig Ramsey, global head of real-time payments, ACI Worldwide. “Recognizing the key indicators of real-time adoption (or further real-time growth) is critical to getting ahead of the competitive curve. These indicators suggest what needs to be done to unleash the potential of real-time payments and will empower stakeholders to make the right decisions.”

Woolworths reveals its online delivery battle plan ahead of lockdown – Finance – Networking – Software – Storage- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Grocery behemoth Woolworths has gone into overdrive to prepare its online delivery network for what many believe will be a protracted national lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with chief executive Brad Banducci revealing the retailer is trying to hire 20,000 casuals.
Revealed this morning, the epic hiring round will literally put boots on the ground to deal with a huge anticipated surge in online orders now understood to be being manually prioritised under Woolworths, with eCommerce hiring staff listed as part of the emergency push.
“As we do this, we will have more hours for existing team members and additional roles to fill as we focus on meeting the needs of our customers and communities,” Woolworths chief executive Brad Banducci said.
“These new roles will not only help us better serve the increase in demand we’re seeing in stores right now, but also allow us to scale up home delivery operations in the months ahead.”
The triage of Woolworths already very large online ordering and fulfilment network to keep it running is an epic feat, not least because the system was never really designed with having to serve the whole of Australia all at the same time.
Prior to the arrival of COVID-19, most major grocery online orders only made up around four to five percent of sales value, with the online systems of both Coles and Woolworths shuttered to regular, non-prioritised customers after they failed to cope with the broader surge in panic sales.
Last week UBS estimated that grocery sales were up 25 percent year on year just on the back of the recent buying surge alone.
But a lot has changed since then, not least the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission green-lighting usually banned collaboration between Woolworths, Coles, Metcash and ALDI.
The move means the retailers will be able to better coordinate the distribution of stock across their physical and online networks.
Yesterday Woolworths revealed it had slashed trading hours across 41 stores around Australia, with affected stores only opening from 11am to 6pm “to support prioritising the delivery of groceries to the homes of vulnerable customers.”
Dubbed ‘Priority Delivery Hubs’, the designated stores have essentially been turned into crisis online fulfilment depots and will use their extra retail downtime to pick and pack orders.
“These 41 ‘Priority Delivery Hubs’ will use the additional hours the stores are not open to customers to pick online orders, with a focus on meeting the increased demand from ‘Priority Assistance’ customers which includes the elderly, people with disability, those with compromised immunity and people in mandatory isolation,” Woolworths said in a statement.
Woolworths currently operates around 1000 supermarkets and food sites across Australia, so there is clearly some headroom left in the Priority Delivery Hub model.
Woolworths arch rival Coles is also pivoting to ramp up online efforts after it also shuttered its web service, saying this week it will have its Coles Online Priority Service up and running next week.

DTA reveals its three-step myGov overhaul path – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Digital Transformation Agency has revealed its three-step path to an updated myGov digital services platform that promises citizens a single, tailored view of all their interactions with the federal government.
In a week dominated by problems with the existing online service portal due to the unprecedented number of people seeking welfare services, the agency has offered fresh detail on its vision for the new platform.
It follows an industry briefing with system integrators and strategic partners looking to work with the DTA on the build on Monday, when Services Australia was scrambling to increase capacity to a platform under siege.
A prototype of the platform also called the government digital experience platform (GOVDXP) that will initially “operate as an extension to, and in parallel with, myGov” has already been designed and developed by the DTA and Services Australia.

Source: Digital Transformation Agency

But the prototype, which resembles that of recognisable social media platforms such as Facebook, is intended to eventually give citizens a single, tailored view of their interactions with government, in particular Services Australia.
It is considered a key element of the government’s vision for Services Australia, which has been remade in the image of Service NSW to replicate its successful digital-first, one-stop shop government services model nationally.
Three horizons
The DTA has detailed three key releases – or horizons – for the project, each of which will add further functionality to the myGov update platform, which builds on “existing technical platforms maintained by Services Australia”.
“The intent is to continually enhance the product and productionise features, to support the end state future myGov update platform,” the DTA said in the requirements document for the platform.
Horizon zero, which showcases the design principles of the new platform has already been released as a new Australia.gov.au home page that offers information on the current coronavirus pandemic.
The solution, which is hosted on Amazon Web Services through Cloud.gov.au, is comprised of the Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Analysis and Adobe Campaign, and could eventually integrate with other platform like Notify.gov.au.
“The demonstrated prototype currently has no third-party integration but demonstrates the intended target state of services which may be exposing APIs over time for us to connect to,” the DTA said.
Big four consultancy Deloitte has been selected for an initial 90-day sprint to configure the prototype – which it expects to be complete in May – and perform additional user research and service design for the prototype.
Under horizon one, the DTA, working with a new system integrator and strategic partner, will develop a new government platform that “provides personalised content, with a web-based myGov inbox, opt-in notifications and login access to myGov” from July.
The DTA then intends to build out the platform, so that it becomes a “place where people can browse information and, once logged in, manage their interactions with government in a central place”.
“The new front end will provide dashboard, profile, inbox and forms, along with information systems such as content pages and notifications,” it said in a blog post.
“An integration layer will sit over the myGov systems, providing a way for information to flow back and forth between the myGov website and the myGov systems.”
“The platform will collect services, apps and other customer experience capabilities to give users everything they need.”
“This will operate on a ‘Netflix’ model, providing users with what they need to do next based on their previous interactions with government services — similar to Netflix’s ‘recommended for you’.
While no date for when horizons one and two will be complete beyond a July start date, the DTA  has not altered its procurement timeline in light of COVID-19.
The week that was (is)
Details of the work follows a difficult few days for Services Australia, which failed to successfully scale to accommodate the influx of people who flooded myGov after loosing their jobs to the coronavirus induced shutdown on Monday.
Problems with the existing platform have since tapered after the agency increased capacity to 150,000 concurrent users, more than 25 times what myGov could support last week.
Government services minister Stuart Robert on Wednesday said myGov had facilitated 2.6 million logins during the day, bringing the total since Tuesday to just under six million.
myGov logins currently average at around 500,000 each day, with the previous busiest day occurring during the 2019 taxtime period last July, where 1.8 million logins were recorded in a single day.
Robert said Services Australia would continue to add more capacity to myGov to support the unprecedented number of people attempting to access welfare services.
“We’re upgrading myGov capacity by creating more load space in our ICT systems to accommodate the surge in demand,” he said.
“We are continuing to monitor the situation and adjust so we can allow as many people to use myGov without compromising overall systems stability.”
The myGov meltdown was initially blamed on a “significant distributed-denial-of-service attack” that didn’t happen.
Robert has now admitted he ‘jumped the gun’ and did not wait for the outcome of Service Australia’s investigation before blaming the traffic surge on a cyber attack.

Telstra reveals 20x call volume increase to govt call centres – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Telstra is working to improve interconnection, capacity and routing of voice calls as its networks are hammered by large increases in call volumes.
Telstra said in a statement that mobile call volumes “on certain routes and geographies are up by more than 50 percent”.
In addition, it said, “specific numbers to Government call centres are experiencing three times the call volumes compared to last week, and over 20 times the normal call volume.”
“As a result, we’re seeing congestion impacting a small proportion (3-4 per cent) of calls on our mobile network, with most of the congestion being driven by the high number of calls to Government 13 and 1800 numbers,” the telco said.
“There is no impact on data as yet.”
Telstra said it is working with Optus “to fast-track upgrades to our interconnection capabilities which is contributing to this congestion”.
“We are continuing to push for a resolution urgently with them,” Telstra said.
“Yesterday we [also] made significant improvements to capacity and call routing on our network, which has allowed us to manage the significantly higher call volumes.”
Optus said in a statement of its own that “as Australians move to working from home and connect with each other digitally instead of face-to-face, we are expecting unprecedented growth in traffic on our networks.”
However, it said its networks “are currently performing well” and that engineers were “working tirelessly to increase capacity across both our mobile and fixed networks” in anticipation.
“We will keep you updated as we continue to boost our networks, but also ask that our customers are patient if they experience any network issues or some slowness – please be assured that we are onto it and doing everything we can,” Optus said.
Similar voice congestion is being seen in New Zealand which is subject to similar lockdown and work-from-home arrangements.

Facebook Reveals Dark Mode with New Desktop Redesign | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from The New York Times

Social network mainstay, Facebook officially rolled out its new modernised redesigned desktop yesterday. The new redesign offers a tabbed home screen, a cleaner view of the profile page, and a new dark mode, reports Tech Crunch.
Facebook tells Tech Crunch that as of yesterday “…the majority of people on Facebook will have access to the new desktop design.” The design itself was first announced at last year’s F8 conference and can be opted for or returned to the usual design by users. However, the design will eventually become the default for all Facebook users later this year.
Facebook Redesigned
Public rollouts of the new version of the desktop sites began being tested initially in October, and after months of positive feedback, Facebook finally decided to for a full rollout.
The social media pioneer also recently released a new redesign for its Messenger platform, removing its ‘Discover’ tab which will demote the visibility of businesses and chatbots.
For the last two years, the company has been planning and promising to simplify its apps after a decade of visual complexity that no longer suits a world filled with its streamlined contemporaries.
As for the desktop redesign itself, the more streamlined navigation is a welcome change – tabs for Groups, Marketplace, Watch and More now rest atop the home screen.
The home page’s larger fonts and more sensible layout are a lot easier on the eyes than the classic version.
Dark Mode
Sourced from Tech Crunch
The most notable feature of Facebook’s new design is the dark mode. The new mode is designed to minimize screen glare while maintaining contrast to spare your eyes from too much brightness when in a dull-lit room.
Activation
To activate the Facebook resign, simply go to the Settings menu of the website, then click “See New Facebook”. To disable the redesign, users return to Setting and hit “Switch to Classic Facebook”.

CBA reveals screen scrapers double its customer fraud propensity – Finance – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has fired a broadside into widespread claims that the use of screen scraping isn’t boosting online banking fraud or hitting consumers, disclosing usually tightly held internal cyber security figures in response to questions from the fintech inquiry.
But it’s not exactly shouting it from the rooftops.
A reply to questions on notice lodged with the Senate select committee on financial technology and regulatory technology published this week reveals Australia’s largest institution has calculated customers who have used data aggregators at least double their risk of copping a digital fraud hit.
The publication of the risk assessment is an eye-popper, not least because it is based on actual bank data rather than the usual rubbery figures and vague factoids regularly spun-up and bleated out by cyber security vendors and major consultancies spruiking their services.
CommBank doesn’t explicitly enumerate the losses it is copping as a result of the controversial data harvesting fudge; but the stinker of a risk number helps explain why the institution has played hardball on the issue to the extent of losing reputation paint, especially as a conga line of fintechs line-up to kick the bank and label it anti-competitive.
“CBA’s fraud analytics team conducted a study on the fraud propensity of customers who had logins via a data aggregator, where we could identify an aggregator. The analysis found that customers with logins via an aggregator are two or more times more likely to experience fraud, a statistically significant result at a 95 per cent confidence interval,” CBA’s general manager for government, industry and sustainability, Euan Robertson wrote.
“Whilst the study does not attribute cause for the statistical relationship, it does demonstrate a probable correlation between the unsafe banking practice of customers who share log-ons and password credentials with third parties and increased fraud. Behaviours that place customers at greater risk should not be encouraged.”
Robertson’s evidence provided to the committee comes after ASIC representatives played down the potential negative consequences of screen scraping in hearing prior to the CBA’s new evidence.
In evidence given to the fintech inquiry in late February ASIC’s acting executive director, financial services, Tim Gough said that “there’s no evidence of which we’re aware of any consumer loss from screen scraping.”
The CBA’s latest evidence, while not explicitly spelling out fraud loss numbers, essentially contests that assertion.
It also shifts the spotlight onto how the finance industry cop runs its review of the of the ePayments Code – essentially ASIC’s self-regulatory rulebook for attributing responsibilities and liabilities within the payments and banking ecosystem, will be a pivotal point for banks, fintechs, merchants.
Although down in the weeds of payments self-regulation, ASIC’s review of the ePayments Code is pivotal for banks because it could reset the anachronistic mechanism that allows banks and global card schemes to sheet back losses to merchants.
At the moment merchants, who pay handsome fees for everything from credit card slugs to buy-now pay-later clips, are forced to eat online losses that ride that ‘scheme’ credit card rails that also rope in debit payments made through Mastercard and Visa.
There are broad industry fears that fintechs and data aggregators who encourage the sharing of login credentials through screen scraping are unintentionally creating fraud data buckets that could be quickly weaponised if hacked.
Gough said in February that ASIC was “not planning to do anything drastic either” in terms of restricting screen scraping regulation.
A lot has changed since then.

Sony reveals PlayStation 5 specifications, including support for internal NVMe SSD upgrades – Blog – 10 minute

The big picture: Just like Microsoft’s new console, Sony devoted a lot of effort into making the PlayStation 5 feel like a true generational leap with an exotic silicon architecture and a revamped memory and storage architecture worthy of being called next-gen.
Microsoft recently revealed the full specifications and internal design details of its Xbox Series X, and now it’s Sony’s turn. The latter company has been a bit more secretive with the PlayStation 5, and has only been throwing small teasers like 4K, 120 Hz, and ray tracing support along with backwards compatibility for older games.

Just like the Xbox Series X, the PlayStation 5 is powered by an eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at up to 3.5 GHz, paired with a custom AMD GPU that has 36 compute units working at 2.23 Ghz that can deliver 10.28 teraflops of FP32 processing power. The Japanese company says comparisons with the PS4 would be unfair, but something worth noting is that Microsoft’s new Xbox will have more compute units for a total of 12 teraflops of peak FP32 processing power.
Sony’s solution for preventing thermal issues is to use a lower number of compute units that are clocked higher instead of more compute units clocked lower. PlayStation 5 lead architect Mark Cerny explained that this configuration has proven to be more efficient in calculating geometry in most games, and game developers have an easier time filling the lower number of compute units with useful work.

The new RDNA 2 GPU compute units have 62 percent higher transistor counts than those of the PlayStation 4, while also running at a much higher clock speed – save for situations when it must drop to stay within the thermal and power envelope.
Sony calls this technology “boost,” although the way it works is different from similarly named technologies. The way the company describes it is that the PlayStation 5 is designed to achieve a constant performance target regardless of ambient and operating temperatures.

This involves some clever power budgeting between the CPU and GPU, which run at variable frequencies to achieve a constant power consumption regardless of workload, as opposed to running at a constant frequency and letting the power vary based on the workload. It also means that developers will have to worry less about power consumption spikes impacting overall performance, an effort that is still going to be required with the Xbox Series X.
Sony is essentially saying that it can extract more performance from the GPU despite it looking worse on paper than the one used in the Xbox Series X. The company promises the same 4K 60/120 Hz performance target, which will sometimes require redirecting unused power budget from the CPU to the GPU to push more pixels, while clock speeds will only be dropped two or three percent at most, which is relatively minor.

The GPU in the PlayStation 5 has similarities with AMD’s upcoming PC GPUs, just like the one in the Xbox Series X. That means it has support for ray tracing accelerated directly through the shaders, and Cerny confidently noted that he’s “already seen a PS5 title that is successfully using ray-tracing-based reflections in complex animated scenes with only modest performance costs.”
Microsoft isn’t alone in thinking that next-gen consoles required a rethinking of how memory and storage architecture can be optimized to achieve fast game loading times as well as enabling developers to render complex scenes with large textures more efficiently with no popping or other similar issues.

Sony is using a smaller SSD at just 825 GB (versus 1 TB on the Xbox Series X) that achieves much faster transfer speeds thanks to a proprietary, 12-channel architecture. The quoted speed is 5.5 GB per second, which is enough to fill the PlayStation 5’s 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM in just a few seconds.
The controller uses a four-lane PCI Express 4.0 interface, and has a dedicated decompression block for ZLIB and Kraken data formats that supposedly has the power of nine Zen 2 CPU cores dedicated to this specific I/O task. It also uses a dedicated DMA controller that governs data transfers between the SSD and RAM and removes an additional performance bottleneck.

Similar to what Microsoft is doing with the Xbox Series X, Sony also employs a number of tricks that bypass traditional file system limitations, courtesy of two I/O co-processors, a coherency engine, and an on-chip RAM that work together to govern situations that typically bottleneck the GPU, such as when stale data in caches needs to be flushed and the storage subsystem is busy doing other I/O operations.
The good news for developers is that they don’t need to worry about the nitty-gritty about how all this works, as it all happens without outside intervention. Cerny explained that “you just indicate what data you’d like to read from your original, uncompressed file, and where you’d like to put it, and the whole process of loading it happens invisibly to you and at very high speed.”

There PlayStation 5 also supports user installation of standard NVMe drives, although Cerny says the company will first have to open up a certification program to ensure you know what drives are compatible before splurging on a 4 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
That’s because Sony’s implementation offers six priority levels arbitration to developers, as opposed to just two in the NVMe standard specification. So, if you want more internal storage, it won’t be quite as fast as the company’s proprietary SSD, and on top of that it’ll have to physically fit in the available space.

Finally, Sony spent a considerable amount of time and engineering effort to improve audio processing. The company says it created something called the Tempest Engine with the specific purpose of delivering unprecedented 3D audio fidelity. It did so by taking the PSVR’s bespoke audio chipset that supports “fifty pretty decent sound sources” and designing a new engine that supports hundreds of advanced sound sources.
The company’s new sound processing unit is also capable of running complex algorithms to achieve accurate sound positioning, and relies upon a custom table tied to every player that’s called the Head-Related Transfer Function. The system is based on how human hearing works, and will use a neural network to generate a model that works best for your ear.

To that end, the new SPU has equivalent processing power to eight AMD Jaguar APU cores. That said, Cerny says it’ll be years before developers will be able to deliver these significant quality improvements for all the different audio setups that everyone has at home.
Sony hasn’t revealed the looks of the PlayStation 5, and the price remains a nebulous even for the company itself. If the new logo is any indication, the overall design of the new console isn’t going to be very different.
Based on what industry watchers have said earlier this month, we’re going to have to wait at least until the end of this year to find out, mainly because of the many production delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Microsoft reveals Xbox Series X internal design and specs – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Microsoft’s new Xbox Series X console is a beast, courtesy of the biggest generational leap in SoC power and new APIs. The company has worked together with AMD to make a console that can rival some of the most powerful PC gaming rigs on GPU performance and game loading times.
Today, Microsoft revealed the full specifications and design details of its upcoming Xbox Series X console, after a series of leaks and teasers that made PC gamers a little envious. And that’s because the new Xbox isn’t just chuck full of powerful AMD hardware, but has NVMe expandable storage and ray-tracing support, while maintaining excellent backwards compatibility with older titles.

Microsoft is using a custom designed, 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.8 GHz (3.6 GHz with SMT enabled) paired with a RDNA 2-class GPU that can achieve 12 teraflops through its 52 compute units that are clocked at 1.825 GHz. As expected, this is all built on TSMC’s 7nm node process and tuned for power efficiency and silent operation.
But more importantly, the company installed 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM along with a 1 TB custom NVMe SSD that can achieve raw speeds of up to 2.4 GB/s – a first for consoles. The RAM is comprised of 10 GB of fast memory for the GPU and 6 GB of slightly slower memory, of which 2.5 GB is reserved for the OS.

There’s also an expansion slot for a 1 TB Seagate SSD for those who will feel the need to back up their games whenever they need additional space for more frequently played ones.
And if that isn’t enough, there’s also support for two additional USB 3.2 external storage drives.

To achieve this compact vertical design, Microsoft split the hardware across two mainboards and placed one 130 mm fan at the top to keep the new console cool. The air is sucked in at the bottom and pulled through a large heatsink, which the company says works best for the hot SoC that’s inside the Series X.
Microsoft has a performance target of 4K 60 fps or up to 120 fps – even cutscenes now run at 60 fps for smother transitions. Digital Foundry saw benchmarks on Gears 5 that show the Xbox Series X delivering similar performance to an RTX 2080, with Coalition’s Mike Raynor saying there’s still room for improvement.

There’s DirectX ray tracing support at an equivalent compute performance of over 25 teraflops (12 teraflops for FP32 compute), and Microsoft along with AMD has developed a solution that uses standard shader cores instead of Nvidia’s tensor core approach.
Ray tracing aside, Microsoft wanted the Xbox Series X to be fast with loading games, too. The company built a system called Velocity Architecture, which makes 100 GB of game assets on the SSD act like “extended memory.” Whenever the game needs some of that data, there’s a dedicated hardware decompression block that can send it at over 6 GB/s, which is especially useful for open world games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Red Dead Redemption 2.

That means that developers won’t have to set aside a significant performance budget for I/O operations, as that is covered through the Velocity Architecture along with DirectStorage and Sampler Feedback Streaming, which Microsoft says will come to PC users in the near future.
Another interesting feature is Quick Resume, which caches data from RAM to the NVMe SSD to make switching between three or four games as fast as possible. The game state will be preserved even after a reboot or a system update, but it’ll also eat a sizeable chunk of storage space, depending on the games that are being cached.
Other things that should make a visible difference in the overall gaming experience are mesh shading, variable rate shading, and variable refresh rate for HDMI 2.1 displays. These allow developers to use the GPU compute units more efficiently, avoid screen tearing, and reduce input latency.

Backwards compatibility wasn’t a second thought, as Microsoft wanted to use the additional power in the Series X to add HDR mode for older games, even those from an era where HDR wasn’t a thing. The company says SDR games will now be enhanced with the help of a reconstruction technique that doesn’t require developers to put in any effort.
Existing games that were made for the older Xbox consoles will run at full 4K thanks to an improved version of the Heutchy Method used in previous consoles.
The new Xbox Series X is full of improvements in every department, but if there’s one thing that is still a mystery, it’s the price.
