Nedbank is contacting clients who have been directly affected by a data breach at a company that sends out SMSs and emails on Nedbank’s behalf. 1.7-million Nedbank clients have had that their names, ID numbers, telephone numbers, physical addresses, and email addresses.
While this information may have been released, Nedbank says that no Nedbank systems or client bank accounts have been compromised in any manner whatsoever or are at risk as a result of this data issue.
The data issue itself was discovered at Computer Facilities (Pty) Ltd – a direct marketing company responsible for sending out SMS and email information for Nedbank and a number of other companies.
“Once we became aware of the issue, we engaged as a matter of urgency with the service provider and leading forensic experts to conduct an extensive investigation,” says Nedbank. To further ensure that no further issues arise, Computer Facilities (Pty) Ltd.’s internet connection has since been disconnected until further notice.
“We regret the incident that occurred at the third-party service provider, namely Computer Facilities (Pty) Ltd., and the matter is receiving our urgent attention. The safety and security of our clients’ information is a top priority,” Nedbank CEO Mike Brown says.
“We take our responsibility to protect our client information seriously and our immediate focus has been on securing all Nedbank client data at Computer Facilities (Pty) Ltd, which we have done.”
Nedbank wants to remind their clients that their bank accounts are not at risk and they do not need to take any further action, but to continue to be vigilant.

500 Chrome Extensions Caught Stealing Private Data of 1.7 Million Users – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Google removed 500 malicious Chrome extensions from its Web Store after they found to inject malicious ads and siphon off user browsing data to servers under the control of attackers.
These extensions were part of a malvertising and ad-fraud campaign that’s been operating at least since January 2019, although evidence points out the possibility that the actor behind the scheme may have been active since 2017.
The findings come as part of a joint investigation by security researcher Jamila Kaya and Cisco-owned Duo Security, which unearthed 70 Chrome Extensions with over 1.7 million installations.

Upon sharing the discovery privately with Google, the company went on to identify 430 more problematic browser extensions, all of which have since been deactivated.
“The prominence of malvertising as an attack vector will continue to rise as long as tracking-based advertising remains ubiquitous, and particularly if users remain underserved by protection mechanisms,” said Kaya and Duo Security’s Jacob Rickerd in the report.

A Well-Concealed Malvertising Campaign

Using Duo Security’s Chrome extension security assessment tool — called CRXcavator — the researchers were able to ascertain that the browser plugins operated by surreptitiously connecting the browser clients to an attacker-controlled command-and-control (C2) server that made it possible to exfiltrate private browsing data without the users’ knowledge.
The extensions, which functioned under the guise of promotions and advertising services, had near-identical source code but differed in the names of the functions, thereby evading Chrome Web Store detection mechanisms.

In addition to requesting extensive permissions that granted the plugins access to clipboard and all the cookies stored locally in the browser, they periodically connected to a domain that shared the same name as the plugin (e.g., Mapstrekcom, ArcadeYumcom) to check for instructions on getting themselves uninstalled from the browser.
Upon making initial contact with the site, the plugins subsequently established contact with a hard-coded C2 domain — e.g., DTSINCEcom — to await further commands, the locations to upload user data, and receive updated lists of malicious ads and redirect domains, which subsequently redirected users’ browsing sessions to a mix of legitimate and phishing sites.
“A large portion of these are benign ad streams, leading to ads such as Macy’s, Dell, or Best Buy,” the report found. “Some of these ads could be considered legitimate; however, 60 to 70 percent of the time a redirect occurs, the ad streams reference a malicious site.”

Beware of Data-Stealing Browser Extensions
This is not the first time data-stealing extensions have been discovered on the Chrome browser. Last July, security researcher Sam Jadali and The Washington Post uncovered a massive data leak called DataSpii (pronounced data-spy) perpetrated by shady Chrome and Firefox extensions installed on as many four million users’ browsers.
These add-ons collected browsing activity — including personally identifiable information — and shared it with an unnamed third-party data broker that passed it on to an analytics firm called Nacho Analytics (now shut down), which then sold the collected data to its subscription members in near real-time.
In response, Google began requiring extensions to only request access to the “least amount of data” starting October 15, 2019, banning any extensions that don’t have a privacy policy and gather data on users’ browsing habits.
For now, the same rule of caution applies: review your extension permissions, consider uninstalling extensions you rarely use or switch to other software alternatives that don’t require invasive access to your browser activity.

Google has admitted that a small percentage of their Google Photos users had their private videos sent to the accounts of complete strangers by Google themselves.

A technical issue, as Google states, is what was affecting their Takeout Service, which lets people download their Google Photos data, and caused the unplanned sharing of the videos between 21 November and 25 November last year, writes The Verge.
“We are notifying people about a bug that may have affected users who used Google Takeout to export their Google Photos content between November 21 and November 25”, reads a statement from a Google spokesperson to 9t5Google.
Google’s emails do not provide any details on how many people were affected by this privacy leak, neither does it say how many videos per account were sent to strangers. The issue was fixed within five days, and less than 0.01 per cent of users who used the Takeout Service were affected, according to a report from 9to5Google, a website dedicated to news pertaining to the company.
With the over 1 billion users Google Photos has accumulated, an approximate population of 100-thousand user-accounts could have been affected by the issue, of which the amount of private video leaks per account is currently unknown.
“We are notifying people about a bug that may have affected users who used Google Takeout to export their Google Photos content between November 21 and November 25”, reads a statement from a Google spokesperson. “These users may have received either an incomplete archive or videos – not photos – that were not theirs. We fixed the underlying issue and have conducted an in-depth analysis to help prevent this from ever happening again.”
The search and advertising giant has since apologized.

Google Accidentally Shared Private Videos of Some Users With Others – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Google might have mistakenly shared your private videos saved on the company’s servers with other users, the tech giant admitted yesterday in a security notification sent quietly to an undisclosed number of affected users.
The latest privacy mishap is the result of a “technical issue” in Google’s Takeout, a service that backs up all your Google account data into a single file and then lets you download it straight away.

According to a screenshot Jon Oberheide of Duo Security shared on Twitter, the issue reportedly remained active between 21st November and 25th November last year, during which “some videos in Google Photos [service] were incorrectly exported to unrelated user’s archives.”
Vice versa, if you had also requested for your account backup during the same 5-day period, you might have even received unrelated videos from other Google accounts.

So, the data leak incident potentially affects only those who used Google Takeout service in late November last year and doesn’t involve photographs you uploaded to Google Photos.
However, the extent of the bug remains unclear, as Google roughly saying “one or more videos in your Google Photos account was affected by this issue.”
The search engine giant also apologized for the glitch and confirmed that it has identified the issue and resolved it.

Zoom Bug Could Have Let Uninvited People Join Private Meetings – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

If you use Zoom to host your remote online meetings, you need to read this piece carefully.
The massively popular video conferencing software has patched a security loophole that could have allowed anyone to remotely eavesdrop on unprotected active meetings, potentially exposing private audio, video, and documents shared throughout the session.
Besides hosting password-protected virtual meetings and webinars, Zoom also allows users to set up a session for non-pre-registered participants who can join an active meeting by entering a unique Meeting ID, without requiring a password or going through the Waiting Rooms.

Zoom generates this random meeting ID, comprised of 9, 10, and 11-digit numbers, for each meeting you schedule or create. If leaked beyond an individual or intended group of people, merely knowing Meeting IDs could allow unwelcome guests joining meetings or webinars.
This could be bad news for anyone expecting their conversations to be private.

To circumvent such scenarios, Zoom late last year introduced some additional controls under the password settings for meetings and webinars, which according to Check Point, was the result of research on security loophole the security firm responsibly reported to the company in July 2019.
In a report shared with The Hacker News prior to its release, Check Point researchers demonstrated an effective automated but unsophisticated enumeration attack to identify valid random Meeting IDs rather than using the brute force technique.

“A hacker could pre-generate a long list of Zoom Meeting IDs, use automation techniques to quickly verify if a respective Zoom Meeting ID was valid or not, and then gain entry into Zoom meetings that were not password protected,” researchers claimed.
“We were able to predict ~4% of randomly generated Meeting IDs, which is a very high chance of success, compared to the pure brute force.”
As a result of Check Point’s disclosure, Zoom introduced the following security features and functionalities into its cloud-based video conferencing service:

Default Passwords ⁠— Zoom now, by default, automatically generates a six-digit numeric password for each meeting you create that participants need to enter when joining by manually entering the meeting ID.
Account and Group Level Password Enforcement — Under new controls, three new password settings are now enforceable at the account, group, and user levels by the account admin.
Meeting ID Validation — Zoom will no longer automatically indicate if a meeting ID is valid or invalid, making it harder for automated scripts to determine active meetings. For each connection, the page will load and attempt to join the meeting. Thus, a bad actor will not be able to quickly narrow the pool of meetings to attempt to join.
Device blocker — To prevent brute force attacks, repeated attempts to scan for meeting IDs will cause a device to be blocked for some time.

DMVs Are Selling Data to Private Investigators, Marketing Firms

A new report shows that the DMVs (Department of Motor Vehicles) in many states are taking full advantage of the modern information economy, and they’re making bank doing it. The data we’re required to hand over by law in order to qualify for a driver’s license is being used for very different purposes than you likely intend. Specifically, it’s being sold to private investigators.

That’s the result of a major Motherboard investigation into how DMVs are using the personal data of the citizens they supposedly serve. Like a lot of companies these days, DMVs sell data. Insurance companies buy some of the data, but much of it is being sold to other sources, like private investigators. Such data is apparently popular for surveilling cheating spouses, and the same private investigators that advertise such services are apparently major purchasers.

Multiple DMVs stressed that they don’t sell social security numbers or photographs, as if this represents some kind of meaningful protection. Some contracts with these investigators are for bulk searches; some are targeted searches. The cost per search is as low as $0.01, and these contracts can run for months at a time.

“The selling of personally identifying information to third parties is broadly a privacy issue for all and specifically a safety issue for survivors of abuse, including domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and trafficking,” Erica Olsen, director of Safety Net at the National Network to End Domestic Violence, told Motherboard in an email. “For survivors, their safety may depend on their ability to keep this type of information private.”

All of this is perfectly legal, thanks to the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, which was passed in 1994. While that law was specifically intended to increase the protections surrounding DMV databases, it included specific carve-outs for private investigators. Granted, the text of the law states that private investigators are only allowed to access these records for a “permitted” DPPA use, but apparently that’s not an issue.

The exact data sold varies from state to state, but it typically includes at least a name and address. Other data, including zip codes, phone numbers, date of birth, and email address are also included depending on the state. The DMV also sells data to credit reporting companies like Experian and LexisNexis. Delaware has arrangements with more than 300 entities. Wisconsin has more than 3,000.

Why are DMVs going down this road? Money. Delaware brought in $384,000 for itself between 2015 and 2019, while the Wisconsin DMV brought in $17M in 2018 alone, up from just $1.1M in 2015. In Florida, the DMV made an eye-popping $77M just in 2017. The contracts with various DMVs explicitly state that the purpose of these agreements is to generate revenue, and the states are aware that some of the information they sell to third-parties is abused. Whether their controls for catching and locking abusers out of these systems are adequate are an entirely different question.

It is long past time for the United States to pass better privacy laws. There is absolutely no justification for the current free-for-all. There is no standard for how data-sharing agreements should be overseen. Local investigations have found that Florida is selling data to marketing firms, not just private investigators, and some citizens have been hit with an onslaught of robocalls and spam as a result. Florida sells data to Acxiom, one of the largest data brokers in America. Acxiom is not a PI firm, just in case you were wondering. Citizens who have been slammed with robocalls, direct mail, and even door-to-door salesman showing up at their homes as a result of this relentless data-selling have no recourse. There’s no one to complain to, there’s no way to get taken off the lists, and there’s no way to prevent their own data from being endlessly sold. Robocalls have become such an epidemic, people now actively avoid answering the phone unless they know the number of the person calling them.

People often ask questions like “Why should I care if someone sells my data?” but don’t connect the question to the fact that they get 15 robocalls a day. Sexual assault and domestic violence survivors may not have those kind of options. But privacy shouldn’t be a right that depends on whether someone is threatening to harm you physically. Privacy should be the default state, particularly when it concerns the government organizations virtually all of us are required to interface with.

If you ever drive in the United States, you must have a driver’s license. Just as with credit reporting agencies, none of us get any choice in the manner. The legal system allows states and the federal government to create effectively mandatory standards because it recognizes that doing so helps ensure the safety of everyone. But if the legal system is going to require that citizens submit data to the federal and/or state government for licensing and registration purposes, it ought to simultaneously require that said data is kept private and only accessed under strictly controlled conditions. The idea that people “opt in” to these practices simply by existing has been stretched past the breaking point. It’s time for a change.

Parallel Markets is trying to make it easy to buy and sell private stock – gpgmail


Parallel Markets is a new startup aiming to make it as easy to buy and sell private company shares as it is for public company stock.

COO Nicholas Goss said this is becoming issue for startups as they stay private for longer, which means early employees can find their equity locked up for longer periods of time — and that’s assuming they can even afford to exercise their stock options.

“This is the type of thing that’s really change the game when it comes to attracting talent,” Goss said.

CTO Brian Muller added, “There’s a pent up demand, both for the ability to sell and the ability to buy … We’re bringing our platform into the mix to work directly with issuers to support that liquidity in a structured way.”

That idea of working with issuers (in other words, the companies whose stock is being sold) is a big of what the Parallel Markets team said distinguishes them from secondary marketplaces like SharesPost. Co-founder and CEO Tony Peccatiello said that while these sales usually happen without input from the company, Parallel Markets is taking a different approach, one that “puts the control over these transactions in the hands of a CFO.”

In other words, Parallel Markets will work with company executives to create what Peccatiello described as “structured liquidity events,” where employees can sell their stock to designated buyers at a given time. The platform also gives the companies additional controls, like a setting floors and ceilings on the price per share.

Meanwhile, all the employees get notified when there’s an opportunity to sell their stock. And the sales are handled by Parallel Markets’ subsidiary broker dealer, in a way that’s compliant with the various regulations.

Peccatiello said the startup — which has raised $1.4 million itself from friends and family — is already working with some initial partners, although it hasn’t actually powered any stock purchases yet: “We expect to be doing those in Q4 of this year.”

Goss (who previously worked as an IPO lawyer at Latham & Watkins, as well as on the investment banking team at Credit Suisse) predicted that over time, startups will make this a bigger part of their compensation packages, where it “almost mimics in reverse the vesting cliff,” where there’s not just a schedule for receiving stock, but also “when you can start selling into these liquidity events.”

Today, Parallel Markets is officially launching a new tool called Passport that Muller said was created for its own needs — namely, verifying accredited investors.

He explained that equity crowdfunding sites, plus other platforms that work with accredited investors, currently need to subject those investors to “a lengthy and arduous on-boarding process” that involves uploading a variety of documents to confirm their accredited status.

With Passport, on the other hand, investors can go through the verification process just one time. After that, when they’re looking to invest through a platform that uses Passport, they can simply click a button to give Passport permission to share their information.

“We looked for partners who could provide this, but we did not find anyone who could provide an ongoing identity verification tool that worked across multiple platforms,” Peccatiello told me in a follow-up email. “We want identity to be truly portable — not only on other third party websites but also places like the blockchain, which provides an interesting use case with smart contracts.”

Urbvan raises $9 million for its private shuttle service in Mexico – gpgmail


As cities in emerging markets grapple with increasingly traffic-clogged and dangerous streets, Urbvan, a startup providing private, high-end transportation shuttles in Mexico, has raised $9 million in a new round of financing.

Co-founded by Joao Matos Albino and Renato Picard, Urbvan is taking the reins from startups like the now-defunct Chariot and tailoring the business for the needs of emerging market ecosystems.

Hailing from Portugal, Albino arrived in Mexico City as a hire for the Rocket Internet startup Linio. Although Linio didn’t last, Albino stayed on in Mexico eventually landing a job working for the startup Mercadoni, which is where he met Picard.

The two men saw the initial success of Chariot as it launched from Y Combinator, but were also tracking companies like the Indian startup Shuttl.

“We wanted to make shared mobility more accessible and a little bit more efficient,” says Albino. “We studied the economics and we studied the market and we knew there was a huge urgency in the congested cities of  Latin America.”

Unlike the U.S. — and especially major cities like San Francisco and New York — where public transportation is viewed as relatively safe and efficient, the urban environment of Mexico City is seen as not safe by the white collar workers that comprise Urbvan’s principle clientele.

The company started operating back in 2016. At the time it had five vans that it leased and retrofitted to include amenities like wi-fi and plenty of space for a limited number of passengers. Since those early days the company has expanded significantly. It now claims over 15,000 monthly users and a fleet of 180 vans.

Urbvan optimized for safety as well as comfort, according to Albino. The company has deals with WeWork, Walmart and other retailers in Mexico City so that all . of the stops on t he route are protected and safe. The company also vets its drivers and provides them with additional training because of the expanded capacity of the vans.

Each van is also equipped with a panic button and cameras inside and outside of the van for additional monitoring.

Customers either pay $3 per ticket or sign up for a monthly pass that ranges from $100 to $130.

Financing for the company came from Kaszek Ventures and Angel Ventures with previous investor Mountain Nazca also participating.

For Albino, who went to India to observe Shuttl’s operations, the global market for these kinds of services is so large that there will be many winners in each geography.

“Each city is different and you need to adapt. The technology needs to be adaptable to the city’s concerns . and where it can . add more value,” says Albino. “The Indian market is super different from Latin America.. It’s a huge market with a lot of congestion… But the value proposition is a bit more basic [for Shuttl].”

Urbvan is currently operating in Mexico City and Monterrey, but has plans to expand into Guadalajara later this year.

YouTube is closing its private messages feature…and many kids are outraged – gpgmail


People love to share YouTube videos among their friends, which is why in mid-2017 YouTube launched a new in-app messaging feature that would allow YouTube users to private send their friends videos and chat within a dedicated tab in the YouTube mobile app. That feature is now being shut down, the company says. After September 18, the ability to direct message friends on YouTube itself will be removed.

The change was first spotted by 9to5Google, which noted that YouTube Messages came to the web in May of last year.

YouTube, in its announcement about the closure, doesn’t offer much insight into its decision.

While the company says that its more recent work has been focused on public conversations with updates to comments, posts, and Stories, it doesn’t explain why Messages is no longer a priority.

A likely reason, of course, is that the feature was under-utilized. Most people today are heavily invested in their own preferred messaging apps — whether that’s Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat, iMessage or others.

Google, meanwhile, can’t seem to stop itself from building messaging apps and experiences. When YouTube Messages launched, Google was also invested in Allo (RIP), Duo, Hangouts, Meet, Google Voice, Android Messages/RCS, and was poised to transition users from Gchat (aka Google Talk) in Gmail to Hangouts Chat.

However, based on the nearly 500 angry comments replying to Google’s post about the closure, it seems that YouTube Messages may have been preferred by many young users.

A sizable number of commenters are complaining that YouTube was the “only place” they could message their friends because they didn’t have a phone or weren’t allowed to give out their phone number.

Some said they used the feature to “talk to their mom” or because they weren’t allowed to use social media.

It appears that many children had been using YouTube Messages as a sort of workaround to their parents’ block on messaging apps on their own phones, or as a way to communicate from their tablets or via web, likely without parents’ knowledge.

That’s not a good look for YouTube at this time, given its issues around inappropriate videos aimed at children, child exploitation, child predators, and regulatory issues.

The video platform in February came under fire for putting kids at risk of child predators. The company had to shut off comments on videos featuring minors, after the discovery of a pedophile ring that had been communicating via YouTube’s comments section.

Notably, the FTC is also now following up on complaints about YouTube’s possible violations of COPPA, a U.S. Children’s Privacy law. Child advocacy and consumers groups complain that YouTube has lured children under 13 into its digital playground, where it collects their data and targets them with ads, without parental consent.

Though some people may have used YouTube Messages to promote their channel or to share videos with family members and friends, it’s clear this usage hadn’t gone mainstream. Otherwise, YouTube wouldn’t be walking away from a popular product.

The feature also had issues with spam — much like Google+ did —  as there were unwelcome requests from strangers, at times.

YouTube says users will still be able to share videos through the “Share” feature which connects to other social networks.
