Deciding a price for the PS5 proving difficult for Sony – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are due to arrive this holiday season, but for Sony, deciding what price its machine will sell for is proving difficult. Because of component shortages and their high cost, the build price of the console is said to be around $450, meaning the MSRP could be around $470 or more.
Bloomberg reports that Sony usually finalizes a console’s launch price in February of the release year, with mass production starting in the spring. But with the PS5, choosing the MSRP is proving difficult.
IHS Markit estimates that it cost $381 to manufacture the PS4, which sold at a retail price of $399. That would put the PS5’s release price at around $470, making it a lot more expensive than the PS4 Pro, which is $399 but often discounted as low as $299.
One of the biggest issues for Sony is securing a reliable supply of DRAM and NAND flash memory, which is in high demand thanks to smartphones such as the Galaxy S20, which come with a minimum of 12GB of RAM.

The PS5 dev kit
It’s been reported that the disruption caused by the coronavirus could impact or even delay the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but Sony says the outbreak hasn’t affected production, at least not yet.
Consoles were traditionally sold at a loss, with companies making profits from software sales and subscription services. Sony lost billions on the PS3 at launch but made sure the PS4 was profitable. Some at the firm believe it should take a loss on the PlayStation 5 if it means the price is competitive with the Xbox Series X, though others would prefer if it to make a profit like the PS4.
In addition to the expensive flash storage, the PS5’s manufacturing cost will be pushed up by the high-end AMD GPU. Sony is reportedly spending more than usual on the cooling system, too, ensuring all that hardware doesn’t overheat.
The report also states that a new PlayStation VR is being developed and will release soon after the PS5 launches. We’ve seen in previous reports that the PSVR 2 will be a major upgrade over the current headset, featuring an AR mode, eye/head-tracking tech, and cost $250.
To get our take on what the successors to the PS5 and Xbox Series X will look like, check out the Future of Tech: Consoles feature.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 line sticks around, gets a price cut – Blog – 10 minute

The big picture: Smartphone makers continue to push the boundaries of high-end device pricing in a cat-and-mouse game with consumers to see what they’re really willing to pay for the latest and greatest. Just a couple of years ago, a $1,000 flagship smartphone was scoffed at but now, nobody really bats an eye.
Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy S20 smartphones are the talk of the town in tech today but their price tags have caught some consumers off guard. The new foldable clamshell, while cheaper than its predecessor, still commands nearly $1,400 to get in the door and if you want the top-end S20 Ultra, be prepared to shell out roughly the same amount of cash.
If you fall into the concerned consumer category, perhaps price cuts to last year’s flagship may be worth looking into?

Samsung during its Unpacked event on Tuesday announced that the Galaxy S10 family will be sticking around for another product cycle albeit at a lower price. The S10e will now start at $599, the standard S10 will command a minimum of $749 and the bigger S10+ will go down to $849.
The most affordable Galaxy S20 starts at $999.

3 Amazon Price Tracking Tools For The Desktop Or Browser – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon has been the largest e-commerce retailer for years, and as the company has branched out into developing its own massively popular products, such as the Kindle Fire and Echo Dot, there’s no sign of it slowing down.
What was once a modest online book store is now a massive online marketplace that sells its own products directly and also allows third-party merchants to list items for sale. With such a hodgepodge of listings, the frugal and savvy are always looking for new ways to take advantage of Amazon’s deals.

Amazon holds large-scale sales very infrequently, it’s most popular being Prime Day, but prices are slashed and deals are launched every day—so many that it’s hard to keep track of.
However, to the benefit of thousands of shoppers, there are several online Amazon price tracking tools that aggregate Amazon’s millions of products and store price histories. In this article, let’s go over some of the best Amazon price tracking tools for your desktop or browser.
Keepa is our pick for the top Amazon price tracking tool in your browser. It’s supported through browser extensions on Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Edge, and even on mobile through the Firefox app.
Although Keepa does offer premium features, I’ve been using it freely for years now and it’s been the best way for me to track the perfect time to snag a product on Amazon.
After creating an account and installing one of Keepa’s browser extensions, it will automatically show price history charts on every Amazon product page.

This allows at-a-glance insight into the best time to purchase a product. This chart alone has saved me from purchasing products for tens of percentages above their frequent lowest prices, and that feels good.
Keepa will also allow you to set up individual price alerts for items directly on Amazon product pages.

When triggered, you can have these price notifications sent to your email, Facebook, Telegram, desktop notifications, or even an RSS feed.
Keepa makes Amazon price-tracking simple and intuitive, and I’ve found no sufficient reason to switch from it to a competing service.
CamelCamelCamel is surprisingly similar to Keepa. The main difference is the functionality of each’s website, rather than their browser extension. CamelCamelCamel’s website offers an Amazon price tracking tool, which offers very unorderly and inconsistent results. It feels like a step back from simply searching on Amazon directly.
CamelCamelCamel offers browser extensions to users of Firefox and Chrome, and its extension works almost identically to Keepa’s.
The key difference is that Keepa’s price charts embed into the Amazon page itself, whereas CamelCamelCamel’s are accessed via the extension’s icon in your browser’s toolbar. When you navigate to an Amazon product page, you’ll see the extension icon light up. Clicking it will bring up the product’s price chart.

The chart allows you to show or hide price types (Amazon, third-party new, and third-party used), and you can easily create price alerts directly from this pop-out by entering your desired price(s).
Choosing CamelCamelCamel over Keepa is a simple matter of if you require the more polished website features that Keepa provides, or if you prefer one’s charts over the other. Both work very similarly and well.
SlickDeals is very different from Keepa and CamelCamelCamel. It’s not a traditional Amazon price tracking service in the sense of keeping a database full of price histories. Instead, it relies entirely on the community to submit relevant deals.
There are pros and cons to this method of deal curation, but SlickDeals users have become masters of their craft over the years. SlickDeals was first to catch the $13,000 camera being sold for just $90 (an obvious price mistake) during Prime Day 2019, for example.
Amazon is all over SlickDeals, and it’s one of the official stores they list in their search results. This allows users to narrow deal alerts down to ones that only appear at Amazon.

While you may not be able to feed SlickDeals the URL of an Amazon product to monitor it for price fluctuations, what you can do is add a custom deal alert narrowed down to an exact store, category, brand, and keyword. As shown above, adding this alert would let me know the instant a user finds a deal for a Kingston DataTraveler flash drive on Amazon.
SlickDeals also has an official browser extension, but it functions more like Honey rather than Keepa or CamelCamelCamel. It’s more of a coupon tracker than a price tracker. One advantage SlickDeals does have over the other two trackers on this list, though, is an awesome app for both iOS and Android.
While it’s not necessarily an Amazon price tracking service, you won’t regret giving SlickDeals a try. You’ll be surprised to see the deals that the community finds!
Investing in the time to set up and maintain tracking on one of these three Amazon price tracking and deal-tracking services will pay dividends in the long run. If your goal is to become a more frugal shopper, definitely try out all three options listed above!

Trade agreement between US and China means no price rise for next-gen consoles – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: The trade agreement signed by the US and China last month has seen both video game fans and the industry breathe a sigh of relief, as it will prevent an increase in price for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The “Phase One” agreement put a hold on Donald Trump’s proposed 25 percent tariffs on $160 billion worth of goods made in China, which included consoles. In all likelihood, the tariffs would have made the next-gen machines from Microsoft and Sony more expensive due to them being manufactured in the country.
In June last year, the threat posed by the tariffs resulted in Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo joining forces and jointly writing an open letter to the office of the United States Trade Representative. The gaming giants said the extra import costs would cause “disproportionate” harm to the industry.

A few months later, a Sony executive reiterated that if the tariffs went through, the company may be forced to pass the costs onto consumers.
But the signing of the Phase One agreement appears to have put fears of a price increase to rest. In a statement to Polygon, the Entertainment Software Association said: “We are encouraged that the Administration suspended the implementation of tariffs on video game consoles and controllers. These tariffs would have significant implications for our industry, which boasts a trade surplus for the American economy. Tariffs will erode innovation, decrease job opportunities for American workers, and increase prices for consumers.”
It’s not just consoles that have been spared a price increase. The agreement has also stopped tariffs on some of Apple’s most popular products, including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks, which could have seen the company increase its prices.

US falls further down the broadband price table, Syria tops the list as the cheapest – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: Do you think the price of broadband is too high in the US? Compared to most other countries, it is. In this year’s worldwide pricing table, the United States was found to be more expensive than 118 other nations. The cheapest country, meanwhile, is Syria, though there are good reasons for that.
The information comes from UK comparison website Cable.co.uk, which collated the data into the 2020 Global Broadband Pricing League Table. It wasn’t a great showing for the US, which was ranked 118th thanks to its average fixed-line broadband price of $50 per month. The cheapest US package out of the 27 measured was $18, while the most expensive reached $299, and despite the year-on-year cost difference falling $17.69, the US has dropped 14 places since 2019.
“While broadband in the United States is widely available and uptake is high, lack of competition in the marketplace means Americans pay far more than they should compared to much of the rest of the world,” writes the site.
Canada, on the other hand, has more reasonable broadband prices. Its average cost is $34.86 per month, marking a $22.8 YoY decrease as the country moves from 86th position to 69.
If you want the cheapest broadband in the world, look to Syria, where the average price is $6.60 per month and the lowest coming in at $2.52. It’s noted that this is largely due to the ongoing collapse of the Syrian pound and the war. Plus, the average speeds are just 0.9Mbps.
The rest of the cheapest countries are made up of Ukraine ($6.64), Russia ($7.35), Romania ($8.15), and Belarus ($9.87). The most costly area is the African nation of Eritrea, where the average price is $2,666 per month, and the most expensive package reaches $15,051.

The other most expensive consumer broadband packages on the planet are found in Mauritania ($1333.78), Turks and Caicos Islands ($1488.11), Mauritania ($4386.95), and Yemen ($8333.33).
“The expense comes from a combination political climate, warfare, of extremely low take-up (no economy of scale) and the fact that in most cases the price you pay will go in large part to actually building a physical line to your property since few already exist. These ‘works costs’ rise exponentially the further your abode sits from each country’s main urban centers.”

The Oculus Go’s price has been slashed to $150 – Blog – 10 minute

In context: One of the main reasons the VR industry hasn’t become more popular is its high barrier to entry. Previously, you needed a high-end PC and a full, almost-$1000 VR kit to get the best experience. Naturally, those weren’t things most people, even many PC enthusiasts, were willing to shell out their hard-earned money for.
However, things have changed quite a bit over the past year or two. There are still pricey, high-end VR headsets out there, but there’s also plenty of more affordable alternatives. The $200 Oculus Go was already a great example of that, but it just became an even better one today.
Now, Oculus Go aims to bring entry-level VR to a greater portion of the mass market with a $50 price cut. From here on out, the Oculus Go can be had for just $150, which is a pretty decent deal.
That price gets you a per-eye lens resolution of 1440x1280p and 32GB of onboard RAM, which can be upgraded to 64GB for an extra $50. Obviously, those specs aren’t the most impressive in the world, but for the money, they’ll probably be perfectly adequate for most casual users.

We should note, however, that the Go doesn’t feature the same hand-tracking functionality as other, pricier VR headsets. It can only sync with a single controller (included in the box), so you won’t be able to use two hands at once in your favorite VR experiences. Still, at this price point, it’s difficult to complain about that too much.
If you do want something a bit more powerful and you have extra money to burn, the Oculus Quest is a solid mid-range alternative to the Go at $400.
Like the Go, it’s completely standalone (you need no exterior trackers), but it has better specs, and it ships with two controllers instead of one. Overall, it should look better, feel better, and offer more gameplay possibilities.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold is the ‘world’s first’ foldable PC with a $2,499 price tag – Blog – 10 minute

In context: Folding-screen devices are all the rage nowadays, and it isn’t hard to see why. Many such gadgets aim to strike a balance between traditional smartphone, tablet, or even laptop form factors by allowing users to switch between them at will. Samsung hopped on board this train with its controversial Galaxy Fold smartphone, and Lenovo followed suit with the announcement of its ThinkPad X1 Fold last year.
Unfortunately, Lenovo wasn’t willing to shed much light on the X1 Fold’s hardware specifications or unique features in its initial reveal. We got a glimpse of its overall design, and we knew that it would come in at about 13.3″, but that was pretty much it.
That changed with the ThinkPad X1 Fold’s CES 2020 showcase today. At the event, Lenovo revealed the device’s price tag, release window, unique features, OS info, and more. Before we get into that, a brief recap for those who aren’t up-to-date on the X1 Fold’s progress: the device is, according to Lenovo, the world’s first fully-functional folding PC with an OLED display.

As you’d expect given the name, the X1 Fold can morph between a fully-flat, tablet-like device and what is essentially a mini laptop (and various other shapes in between). Which mode you might benefit from the most will likely vary over time.
There may be scenarios where you’ll prefer the extra space that full-screen use offers, but other situations might demand a folded, dual-screen approach. No matter what form factor you prefer, the X1 Fold will ship with its own stylus for note-taking, doodling, or even full-on digital art.

Some of the use cases for a folding display include, say, watching a lecture on one “screen” while taking notes on the other, or folding the device slightly to read a few chapters of your favorite novel like a traditional book.
In the business world, you could even participate in a video call with the top half of the device, and manage a presentation in the bottom — it’s up to you, Lenovo says.
The X1 will release with optional 5G connectivity and a full version of Windows 10 — there’s a reason Lenovo is calling this the first “fully functional PC with a folding OLED display.” Support for Windows 10X will likely arrive at a later date, for an “enhanced” foldable experience.

The X1 Fold is made up of carbon fiber, “lightweight alloys,” and a “luxurious” leather cover, all of which should make the gadget pretty sturdy (though we still don’t recommend dropping it). The cover also gives it a notebook-like aesthetic, which was probably intentional on Lenovo’s part.
In terms of specs, Lenovo is continuing to remain surprisingly tight-lipped. We know it will run on Intel processors with the chipmaker’s Hybrid Technology, but specific CPU models, storage and RAM configurations, and even the X1’s screen resolution are still up in the air.
The device is not available for pre-order yet, but when it is, you’ll need to shell out a whopping $2,499 to grab one. For that price, we certainly hope the specifications don’t disappoint — it’s a bit unlikely that the X1 Fold’s form factor alone will be enough to justify such a high price tag.

Samsung Galaxy Book Flex Alpha breaks cover with QLED display, aggressive price point – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Samsung on Thursday welcomed a new member to its Galaxy Book line. The Galaxy Book Flex α (Alpha) is said to combine the productivity and premium experience of a laptop with the mobility and flexibility of a smartphone.
Samsung’s new 2-in-1 is powered by an unspecified 10th Gen Intel Core processor alongside Intel UHD Graphics and your choice of 8GB / 12GB of DDR4 alongside 256GB, 512GB of 1TB of solid state storage. Wi-Fi 6 comes standard, as does 802.11 ax 2×2 and although the system is compatible with Active Pen, you’ll have to shell out extra for the accessory.

The highlight of Samsung’s new 2-in-1 is without a doubt the 600 nit QLED display. It measures 13.3 inches diagonally with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 and boasts 100 percent color volume for a “vibrant picture in any lighting.”
Other noteworthy features include dual 1.5W stereo speakers, a fingerprint reader for enhanced security, a 720p webcam with dual array digital microphones and a backlit keyboard.

The svelte system measures 13.9mm thick (0.55 inches) and weighs just 1.19kg (2.62 pounds). Battery life is said to be rated at up to 17.5 hours from the 54Wh unit although Sammy admits that runtime will vary depending on usage and settings (meaning the reported figures are likely a best-case scenario).
The Samsung Galaxy Book Flex alpha will be available sometime during the first half of 2020 starting at $829.99.

Porsche Taycan vs Tesla Model S: Spec for spec, price for price

The Porsche Taycan is a missile aimed straight at Tesla. The German electric sedan packs everything needed to give the Model S its first real fight. The Porsche is just as fast, is sleeker thanks to a lower drag coefficient, and packs several technical goodies missing from Tesla’s sedan. However, the Tesla Model S has a longer range is much less expensive.

Specs alone cannot properly illustrate a vehicle’s worth but they’re a good starting point. What follows are several key areas comparing the two trim levels of the Porsche Taycan against the two versions of the Model S currently available.

The chart here does not list self-driving features or capabilities, a key feature to the Tesla Model S. As of writing Porsche has yet to revel any self-driving capabilities of the Taycan besides the standard driver assistance features found on all Porsche vehicles.

Please note, the EPA has yet to release official range numbers for the Porsche Taycan. Currently, Porsche is only noting that the new European rating system, (WLTP), rates the sedan with the max range of 279 miles. The EPA says the Model S Long Range has a range of 370 miles.

Disney will bundle Hulu, ESPN+ and Disney+ for a monthly price of $12.99 – gpgmail

Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+ will be available as a $12.99 monthly bundle with ESPN+ and ad-supported Hulu.

That means the full Disney bundle (it owns ESPN and — thanks to the Fox acquisition — has a controlling stake in Hulu) will cost the same amount as Netflix’s standard U.S. plan. That’s also about $5 less than you’d pay every month if you signed up for each of the three separate subscriptions.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the pricing this afternoon as part of the company’s third-quarter earnings call, as reported in Axios and elsewhere.

Earlier this year, the company announced that Disney+ will cost $6.99 per month as a standalone subscription, and will launch on November 12. At the time, executives said they were “likely” to offer a bundle with ESPN+ and Hulu as well, but they didn’t provide any concrete plans or details.

At launch, Disney+ will include a big swath of the joint Disney-Fox content library, including the first two Star Wars trilogies, the latest Marvel movies, “The Simpsons” and the Signature collection of classic Disney films, with more content added as it gets freed up from third-party deals.

Disney is also developing original shows for the service, including several Marvel shows and the Star Wars spin-off “The Mandalorian.”
