Amazon in contact with coronavirus test makers for potential screenings on employees – Hardware – Networking- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon.com Inc has been in contact with the CEOs of two coronavirus test makers as it considers how to screen its staff and reduce the risk of infection at its warehouses, according to internal meeting notes seen by Reuters.
The chief executives of Abbott Laboratories and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc have told Amazon they would like to work with the e-commerce company, though the US government is taking up all of their testing capacity at present, the notes said.
The company also discussed whether it could start such tests in at least one warehouse near its Seattle headquarters, the status of which was unclear. The nature of Amazon’s conversations with the test makers and the exact assistance they might offer were unclear.
The document separately indicated Amazon is looking into the ability to screen more than one person at a time for the virus, and it also wants to partner with a medical organization in its testing efforts. It did not give further details on multi-person testing or name a partner.
In a statement on Saturday, Abbott Laboratories confirmed it has been contacted by Amazon and other companies to provide testing for their workforces.
“We know it’s important for several industries for their workforces to be safe, but as we’ve said, right now we’ve prioritized the healthcare frontline workforce in outbreak hotspots and have been working with the White House Task Force, FDA, FEMA and CDC and state authorities to ensure they get to those areas,” said an Abbott spokesperson.
Thermo Fisher did not return a request for comment late Friday. Amazon declined to comment.
Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, is rolling out face masks and temperature checks for workers at all its US and European warehouses by next week.
Longer term, however, it wants to test workers for the virus and hopes other companies will follow suit, according to the notes, in which Amazon’s general counsel also criticized an employee who was fired on Monday.
The notes reveal how the company is focused on coronavirus testing as important to its operation and to bolstering the US economy. They also show how Amazon remains in the early stages of determining how to start checks for the virus and tackle a shortage of tests.
The attempts to increase screening measures come at a time when high-profile protests have hit several Amazon warehouses, as employees increasingly fear they will contract the virus by showing up to work. The COVID-19 disease already has been reported among staff from at least 19 of its US warehouses.
More than a million people globally have been infected and more than 58,000 have died in the pandemic.
Abbott has US marketing approval for a diagnostic test that can give patients results in minutes, for use in physicians’ offices and other community healthcare settings. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a Thermo Fisher test as well.
The type of evaluation Amazon was considering was also unclear, whether diagnostic to detect current infections or an antibody test to tell if someone may be immune.
Amazon has had a growing interest in healthcare. The company announced a partnership with Berkshire Hathaway Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co two years ago to lower health costs for their employees, a venture now known as Haven.
Other retailers, meanwhile, including rival Walmart Inc, have worked with the White House on drive-through testing for first responders.

AI finds 9 potential Coronavirus COVID-19 drugs that can be used on humans immediately- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
AI firm, Gero, which specialises in AI-driven drug discovery, has used its AI platform to identify the potential anti-COVID-19 drugs. Six of them have been approved, three were withdrawn, and the other nine have been already tested in clinical trials for other indications. The emergency of the situation, as well as the legal and regulatory status of these agents, make it possible to start immediate clinical trials for most of the suggested drugs.
Gero used its AI drug discovery platform to identify molecules with potential effects on the coronavirus replication. The fact that this time the potential treatments were found among the existing drugs marks a significant improvement over previous efforts to use AI to predict molecules active against COVID-19. The discovery makes it possible to start clinical trials in a matter of weeks.
Some of the drugs have been well known for decades and approved in many countries for human or veterinary use, some of them even have confirmed effects against SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 viruses, while others have not been known previously for any related effects.
The drugs found to be potentially effective include:
Niclosamide – an oral anthelmintic drug used to treat parasitic infections in millions of people worldwide. Niclosamide has been approved in Italy, the United States (now withdrawn), France, and some other countries.
Nitazoxanide – a broad-spectrum antiparasitic and broad-spectrum antiviral prescription drug that is used in medicine for the treatment of various helminthic, protozoal, and viral infections. Approved in the U.S., India, Mexico and some other countries.
Niclosamide and Nitazoxanide have been recently recommended to be tried as COVID-19 treatment in patients.
Afatinib – a prescription medicine approved in the U.S. for the treatment of patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), along with 28 countries within the EU, China, and some other countries.
Ixazomib – a prescription medicine used in combination with the medicines REVLIMID® (lenalidomide) and dexamethasone to treat multiple myeloma in patients who have received at least one prior treatment for their multiple myeloma. Approved in the U.S., EU and some other countries.
Reserpine was originally isolated from the flower Rauwolfia serpentina in 1952. It was once used as a treatment for high blood pressure and psychotic episodes. It has been approved in Italy, Germany, France and some other countries.
The list of potential anti-COVID-19 drugs also includes several senolytics. Senolytics (molecules that “kill” the so-called senescent or damaged cells) are attracting the growing interest from the academic world and the biotech industry for their potential against a range of age-related diseases and ageing itself.
Although some of the drugs with anti-coronavirus potential have been approved for use on humans for other medical indications and are immediately available to the public, Gero strongly urges against self-treatment and reaffirms the necessity of acting in line with the national regulations, including the rules for off-label use of available drugs.

New Site Helps Protect Private Car Buyers From Potential Scam | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The development of Africa’s private car buying market is rising, with a growth potential of between three to four million car sales between 2020 and 2025, according to market research and consulting firm Mordor Intelligence.
Growing at an even faster pace is the continent’s Internet usage. In July 2019 alone, more people in Africa (525 million people) accessed the Internet than in Latin America, North America or the Middle East.
But, as the Internet becomes more accessible to a wider population, so does the prospect of cybercrime threats, like sophisticated malware and software security breaches.
At the crossroads of the private car market and Internet security in Africa is YeloMotor, a new online community designed to provide honest reviews about online sellers and services from real consumers sharing their personal experiences.
Know Your Seller
In 2017, IT services firm Serianu found cybercrime in Africa cost the continent an estimated R49 billion with nearly 14,000 cyberattacks per day in South Africa alone. For consumers looking to purchase a car online from a private seller, the fear and anxiety that comes with spending thousands without ever truly knowing who they’re dealing with can be daunting.
YeloMotor’s mission is to help every potential buyer be informed and stay protected witha free “community” service allowing anyone with an Internet connection the ability to rate and review questionable sellers, mechanics, and auto body shops; because the best insights come from those who know.
YeloMotor offers an enhanced level of additional protection to its members. If you’re looking to spend your hard-earned money on a car, the last thing you want is to be ripped-off. For a small fee, potential buyers can utilize YeloMotor’s “search” feature to research a seller’s reputation, helping to provide awareness and reassurance when shopping for a car online.
This “search” feature can also be used to research mechanics and auto body shops. It’s not uncommon for small businesses in African markets, like South Africa, to have a limited digital footprint. YeloMotor makes it possible for consumers in the automotive community to alert others of unethical practices by businesses, helping save time and money. It also takes the guesswork out of knowing whether you’ll receive quality repairs and maintenance at a fair price.
Transparency and Trust
With prices continuing to rise in South Africa (and across the continent) for new car sales year-to-year, purchasing used cars remains more popular than ever. In a virtual world available to more people than ever before, consumers want convenience and peace of mind just as much as they want quality and value.
YeloMotor brings the online private automotive community together, with transparent reviews that potential car buyers can trust.

The gap between the potential and the promise of data: Tempemail Programmatic Punch UK- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Last year it was my pleasure to be part of the ‘Data, Data, Data’ panel at Tempemail’s Programmatic Punch event in London. Despite our different perspectives from different corners of the industry, it struck me that there was a remarkable level of agreement on our panel about the challenges facing this part of the marketing industry. For the issues facing advertisers about collecting and using audience data to improve marketing performance all boil down to one thing: the gap between the hypothetical potential of data and the rather different, practical reality.
The potential of being able to target individual consumers at scale and with pinpoint accuracy sounds hugely attractive, as all grand visions do. And yet the day-to-day reality is that so much of the data being used isn’t nearly as accurate as is claimed, and very often it’s not being implemented properly. As we discussed on the panel, it’s like the big vision of “£350m a week to the NHS” painted in white on the side of Boris’ big red bus during the EU Referendum. In principle it sounded great, and doubtless proved to be a vote-winner. The reality more than three years on is rather nuanced; there’s a lot more devil in the detail.
On the panel I didn’t raise my observations from some theoretical consultant’s viewpoint. I’ve been building large scale digital advertising capabilities for companies such as Sky and AOL for the last twenty years. And at Ebiquity, the work we undertake for advertisers is all done by ex-trading desk, DMP, and adtech professionals. It’s from this first-hand, practical experience that we base our observations.
In programmatic media trading, companies big and small talk routinely about the transformational benefits of data. But in our experience of working with some of the world’s biggest and most progressive advertisers, data rarely gets anywhere near the promise. One of the very real challenges for advertisers is that the companies selling services and solutions are far too focused on a theoretical upside or never mention any of the risks, downsides, and limitations. This is similar to the way politicians frame arguments to support their desired outcome of voter ballots. It’s why, over the past few years, fact checking services have grown significantly on both sides of the Atlantic.
The unspoken risks and downsides in programmatic include the increasing decline of the cookie and the fact that the dominant walled-garden platforms refuse to allow independent validation of their data accuracy. Regulatory pressure – GDPR in action, the imminent arrival of the California Consumer Protection Act, and the new EU Privacy directive – are all hastening the demise of the cookie. So, too, are changes in privacy settings in most major browsers; Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. Yet many leading companies continue to sell audience data products and services as if nothing had changed in the ecosystem over the past five years, and we are seeing a push to increase audience-led buying for 2020 without the necessary strategies to mitigate these risks.
From the work we’ve been recently doing with clients, it’s clear that the dream of using audience data isn’t translating into efficient increases in sales. In many cases, it’s delivering lower return on investment than other, more traditional options available. If it carries on like this, it’ll only increase the number and intensity of difficult questions from the chief finance officer.
Don’t get me wrong. Not everything about programmatic is doom and gloom, and we were by no means totally gloomy on the ‘Data, Data, Data’ panel at Programmatic Punch. But what we want is a much more realistic discussion – and one that balances potential and upsides with risks and downsides, in much the same way that consumer investment products must be said to offer opportunities that “can go up as well as down”.
At the end of the session, I was asked whether self-regulation was required in programmatic. I answered by asking the audience if they believed the energy industry should be regulated on issues of climate change or whether they should be allowed to regulate themselves. Like all rhetorical questions, it didn’t need answering. And so, for me, programmatic also needs independent oversight and for exactly the same reasons as the energy, banking, and political sectors do: to ensure that commercial pressures to grow revenues and profits do not drive behaviour which could have negative impacts for the customer.

Budget 2020 outlines the significance of a digital-first India in realizing the country’s potential: Prakash Mallya, Intel India- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Prakash Mallya, VP, and MD – Sales and Marketing Group, Intel India says that he is encouraged by the efforts to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to improve disease detection and pre-emption as part of the PM Jan Arogya Yojana
The Union Budget highlights the role technology-enabled innovation can play in leapfrogging the nation. From integration in priority sectors like agriculture and healthcare to a continued focus on smart cities, the first budget of the new decade clearly outlines the significance of a digital-first India in realizing the country’s potential. I am especially encouraged by the efforts to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to improve disease detection and pre-emption as part of the PM Jan Arogya Yojana. Such applications of emerging technologies combined with the focus on increasing the penetration of fibre connectivity in the nation have the potential to fundamentally impact the lives of millions in the coming years.
Provisions to invest in and nurture local talent and entrepreneurship will go a long way in organizing India’s workforce and equipping them with the skills and measures needed to continue to innovate for India and for the world. Policies and investments enabling data centres and quantum computing and applications will help India spur the development of new breakthroughs across sectors.
With the government’s target of a $5 trillion economy by 2024, Intel believes that technologies like AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and ML will continue to play a pivotal part in this journey. We look forward to further strengthening our work with the local ecosystem and with the government in enabling technology innovation and skilling India’s workforce to power the next wave of India’s digital revolution”

Nest thermostat feature alerts users to potential HVAC issues – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Google Nest is testing a new smart thermostat feature that can alert users of potential issues with their heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
Google Nest Product Manager Jeff Gleeson said that based on information like your thermostat’s historical data and current weather, it will learn to detect some unusual patterns that might indicate an issue. If it takes longer than usual to heat or cool your home, for example, there may be a problem brewing.
In the event an issue is detected, Google Nest will alert you via e-mail. Those who are already signed up for the Nest Home Report monthly e-mail that summarizes energy usage and safety events will automatically be enrolled to get the new HVAC alerts. If not, you can sign up by opening the Nest app, tapping Settings -> Notifications -> Nest Home Report and turning the slider to the “on” position.

Google Nest is also looking to monetize the feature. Through a partnership with Handy, the company can put you in touch with an HVAC Pro to come have a look at your system.
The Handy service will initially be offered in more than 20 metro areas including Boston, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Denver and San Diego, just to name a few. Additional regions will be added over the course of the testing period, we’re told.

Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Flip Z potential launch dates leak – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: We know that Samsung will unveil its Galaxy S20 line and the Galaxy Z Flip—assuming that’s its name—at an Unpacked event on February 11. The devices’ launch dates are still unknown, but a new leak could have revealed when we’ll get our hands on them.
The information comes from XDA Developers’ Max Weinbach, who’s been responsible for a number of leaks regarding Samsung’s upcoming phones. He tweeted that a new source told him the successor to the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip (previously thought to be called the Galaxy Bloom) will “likely” launch on February 14.
The foldable device will cost $1,400. That’s a lot cheaper than the Galaxy Fold’s near $2,000 launch price, though the successor is said to be more of a mid-range offering. It’s also $100 cheaper than the Motorola Razr, which looks to be a direct competitor to Samsung’s phone. Weinbach added that the Flip Z might be an AT&T timed exclusive and could be available unlocked.

S20, S20+, S20 Ultra will likely be available first Friday of March. S20 Ultra should retail for $1300.
— Max Weinbach (@MaxWinebach) 27 January 2020

As for the S20 line, Weinbach believes the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra will likely be available the first Friday of March, which is March 6—that’s 24 days after the Unpacked event. He adds that the S20 Ultra “should retail” for around $1,300.
Elsewhere, the writer claims that the Galaxy Buds+ will cost $149.99 and have double the battery life of their predecessors, along with improved Active Noise Isolation, not noise cancelation. The S20 phones, meanwhile, will have IP68 at around 5 meters and come with pre-installed screen protectors.

The most surprising thing about the leak is that the Flip Z could launch weeks before the S20. The Galaxy Fold was scheduled to launch later than the S10, and its technical problems pushed the release date back even further.
You can see more leaked details about the Galaxy S20+ here.

Magic: Legends’ first gameplay trailer shows a potential Diablo 3 killer – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: Developer Perfect World dropped a new gameplay trailer (via Game Informer) on Wednesday for its upcoming Magic: Legends. The company describes it as an MMO action RPG, but it looks more like a four-player co-op Diablo 3 clone, and there is nothing wrong with that.
As the name suggests, it is Perfect World’s adaptation of the collector card game Magic: The Gathering that puts players in the shoes of a Planeswalker. If you like playing Diablo 3 as a magic wielder, Magic: Legends should be right up your alley.

The game offers five classes of magic users, but the official website only highlights two at the moment — the Mind Mage and the Geomancer. The former uses psychic-like powers such as telekinesis to attack from range, while the latter can get up close and personal using powerful earth and fire AoE spells to vanquish foes.
The studio also only has two worlds from the Magic multiverse to announce for now. Shiv is a volcanic island on the plane of Dominaria where players will face Ghitu tribes, goblins, ogres, and dragons. Benalia, also on the plane of Dominaria, pits you against the demons of the Cabal.

The game is currently still in the alpha phase, but Perfect World says they plan to launch on consoles and PC sometime this year. A beta version is coming soon, which you can sign up for through Arc Games.
What is most attractive to me is it appears Perfect World is going more with the action-RPG aspect rather than the MMO with the option to go it alone. Perfect for a lone wolf like me.

Amelia Earhart Expedition Ends With Potential Clues, but No Answers

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Robert Ballard’s expedition to Nikumaroro to search for evidence of Amelia Earhart’s final resting place has ended without locating the Lockheed Electra. The search isn’t heading back entirely empty-handed — a land-based search party is still working on the island, and National Geographic pointed to a silver sheet of metal with what appear to be rivet holes as potentially being an artifact connected to the lost Earhart aircraft  — but no firm or final artifact was found to mark the spot where Earhart landed.

Ballard focused his search in the northwest corner of the island, near the lagoon. There were multiple reasons to focus on this location. The so-called Bevington Photo, taken by Cadet Officer Eric Bevington, while leaving Nikumaroro — then called Gardner Island — shows a strange object (inside the red circle) sticking up above the waves. The photo was initially discovered by TIGHAR, which has led searches for Earhart for decades.

Bevington Photo

The Bevington Photo. SS Norwich City in the background.

An enlarged image of that object is shown below:

When we ran our deep dive on Amelia Earhart and the search for her aircraft, one of our readers — a senior mechanical engineer at a U.S. electronics manufacturer — contacted us with a bit of sleuthing they’d done on their own time. He used multiple AI programs to sharpen the enhanced version of that image, and writes:

The first program I used, Sharpen A.I., has three modes: Shapen, Focus, and Stabilize. I tried all three and found that using Stabilize worked best. The photo was oversampled given its limited resolution so there is more “blur” than “information.” However, there was still a very small amount of vertical motion in the camera when the photo shot, resulting in some vertical motion blur, which Focus A.I. can do amazingly good work with.

Then I used Gigapixel A.I. to double the pixel count. When you have genuine information to work with (sharp images limited by resolution), Gigapixel A.I. can sometimes give results that truly astonish. There’s so little real information in the Bevington Object photo that the improvement afforded by Gigapixel A.I. was pretty limited. But the improvement seemed to be there, so I kept it.

After doubling the pixel count with Gigapixel A.I., I then halved the resolution (restoring it to its original 343-pixel width) using the Preview app in MacOS. To me, frankly, the sharpened photo appears more like water breaking over a rock than anything else. The way people’s vision system recognizes objects is heavily influenceable by suggestion.

The sharpened version of the AI image is below:

stablize double half (1)

In our larger write-up on the topic, we discuss why the Bevington Photo was considered to be such potentially powerful evidence that the Lockheed Electra had landed in this spot. Despite extensively surveying the target search zone and underwater canyons and “chutes” that descend from the coast of Nikumaroro, Ballard and his team found little of note.

There is, however, some cause for hope. National Geographic writes that the land search team may have found fragments of the skull found on Nikumaroro back in 1940. Once theorized to belong to Earhart, the skull and other bones were thought lost in WW2. The skull is being reconstructed and will be DNA-tested in the next few months. Nat Geo doesn’t provide any further information on the status of the land team, but the DNA analysis of those bone fragments might just answer this question once and for all. If we can’t find the wreckage of the Electra or any objects guaranteed to be associated with it, DNA evidence of either Earhart or her navigator, Fred Noonan would also confirm the story.

Ballard, meanwhile, is heading to Howland and Baker Islands — Howland was Earhart’s original destination — to map the undersea areas around both of them. He has no plans to return to the Earhart search but knows where he’d look if he did: the southern part of the island, where there are beaches and a potential campsite that may have been associated with the castaways.
