Trump criticises Apple’s encryption stance on Pensacola phones – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

US President Donald Trump lashed out at Apple on Tuesday, castigating the iPhone maker for what he said was its refusal to unlock phones used by criminals while benefiting from government help on trade.
Trump’s tweet came amid the investigation into the fatal shooting of three Americans by a Saudi Air Force officer at the US Naval Station in Pensacola, Florida, last month, which Attorney General William Barr called “an act of terrorism” on Monday.
The episode marks the latest flare-up in a privacy debate between technology companies such as Apple and Facebook and authorities.
The tech companies argue that strong encryption protects the privacy and security of their users, while law enforcement officials say criminals have used the technology to evade justice and called on tech firms to provide a way to crack it, using high-profile cases such as Pensacola and the 2016 shooting in San Bernardino, California, as examples.
Trump on Tuesday had harsh words for Apple.
“We are helping Apple all of the time on TRADE and so many other issues, and yet they refuse to unlock phones used by killers, drug dealers and other violent criminal elements,” the US president said on Twitter. “They will have to step up to the plate and help our great Country, NOW!” he said.
Apple has said it cannot access data that is encrypted with a passcode and stored on an iPhone and that it would have to build a specific tool for doing so, known in the tech industry as a “backdoor.” The company can and does, however, hand over data stored on its cloud storage servers to law enforcement officials, which often includes backups of iPhones, including iMessages.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment on Trump’s tweet. On Monday, the company said it rejected “the characterization that Apple has not provided substantive assistance.”
Earlier on Monday Barr called on Apple to help the Federal Bureau of Investigation unlock two iPhones involved in the case.
Apple said it had responded to seven separate legal requests from federal investigators in December starting the day of the shooting.
The company said it turned over “many gigabytes” of data to investigators, including iCloud backups, account information and transactional data for multiple accounts. Apple said the FBI did not request help unlocking phones until January 6, with a request for a second iPhone sent on January 8.
“A federal judge has authorized the Department of Justice to access the contents of the dead terrorist’s phones. Apple designed these phones and implemented their encryption. It’s a simple, ‘front-door’ request: Will Apple help us get into the shooter’s phones or not?” Kerri Kupec, a Department of Justice spokeswoman, said in a statement on Tuesday.
After the shooting by two Islamic militants in San Bernardino, California, in 2015, federal investigators eventually turned to third-party cybersecurity firms for help to unlock the shooter’s device.
The Wall Street Journal on Monday reported that the devices used by the Pensacola shooter were older iPhone 5 and iPhone 7 models and cited cybersecurity experts as saying commercial firms could likely crack them.

12 Free Mobile Ringtones That Sound Like Real Phones – Blog – 10 minute

There was a period of time when every mobile user had their own ringtone. However, that’s not the case today. You’ve probably been in this situation many times when you hear a default mobile ringtone in public and think it’s your phone ringing.
Changing your ringtone isn’t just a way to personalize your phone. You can use it to differentiate your contacts as well, by setting different melodies for different people or groups of people. It can help separate your personal life from work without other people realizing it.

The good news is, there are plenty of options out there. You can find all kinds of free mobile ringtones for your phone online. From classic retro options to the sounds from your favourite movies. No matter how picky you are, you’ll find something for your taste. If you’re looking to change your ringtone, consider one of these options that sound like real phones.
Put Your Phone in Nostalgia Mode
Sometimes you just want to be reminded of that worry-free time when you didn’t have dozens of social media apps on your phone buzzing one after the other.
If you’re looking to relive those better days, one of the following free mobile ringtones might be just what the doctor ordered.
Choose Your Nokia Classic

This is your stop if Nokia was your first cell phone. Add a bit of nostalgia to your digital life with an original Nokia ringtone. Throughout its journey, Nokia tone has gone through many modifications. There’s even a dubstep remix and multiple versions with musical instruments added to it. But for maximum effect we recommend using the original Nokia ringtone.
While it might seem outdated for some, if you’ve ever used a Nokia phone before, it will take you back to simpler times. Set it as a message or call tone, or even use it as a new alarm sound.
Your General Retro Ring
For retro lovers, there are plenty of ringtone options out there. When you say the words retro ringtone, everyone imagines their own sound. RIght now we want you to think of those old cord phones that we all used to have at home. Depending on where you lived back then, the sound you think of might differ. But it still feels and sounds like home.

If you’re looking for a retro ring from a specific country, a Beepzoid site can help you with that. It features over 60 vintage ringtones though. Might take a while to browse through them all. But when you set something like that as your modern phone ringtone, it’s bound to bring a warm nostalgic feeling with it.
Classic European Ringtone
If you’re looking not so much for nostalgia but for that classy vintage feeling, try the old European phone mobile ringtone. This double tone retro classic is bound to take you back in time.
Another Retro Tone
Do you often miss calls and sleep through alarms because you’re too used to your default ringtone? Then choose the retro tone that will shake up not just you but everyone nearby every time you get a call. The high-pitched ringtones are perfect for that.
Best Picks For Cinephiles
For a recognizable phone ring, look at the free mobile ringtones that were often used in movies and TV series.
That Hollywood Classic
The ultimate classic here is the phone sound from every retro Hollywood movie. When you get a call, everyone around you would be instantly reminded of an old show they used to love, or that time they were watching Pulp Fiction for the first time.
Luckily, if you ever want to watch some of the classic hits again, you can easily stream those movies online for free.
Austin Powers Ringtone

Whether you’re a fan of Austin Powers movies, or just trying to blend in as a secret agent, this free mobile ringtone is a hit.
It was originally introduced in the 1966 movie Our Man Flint. Is it classy or a little extra? You might need to rewatch the Austin Powers movies to decide.
Satellite Phone Ring
Speaking of famous Hollywood hits. Jurassic Part 3 features one of the scariest ringtones of all time. When one of the dinosaurs swallows a cell phone and it starts ringing behind the protagonists’ backs.
A ringtone coming from the dinosaur’s belly will definitely make you stand out.
24 CTU Ringtone
24 is a TV show that features Jack Bauer, and agent working for Los Angeles’ Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). You often hear the phone ring in the series, and the sound is quite distinctive.
If you’ve ever seen the show, you can probably hear it ring in your head right now.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop Ringtone

This one is for all comedy lovers. And the fans of this specific comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
The protagonist Paul Blart who works as a security guard at a mall buys a cell phone but doesn’t know how to change the ringtone. So whenever he gets a call, it plays Rasheeda’s My Bubble Gum tune. It’s rather amusing as it clashes with the character’s personality. A ringtone like that will definitely turn heads.
Ringtones For Attracting Attention
Want to annoy everyone on public transport? Or maybe just play a prank on your friends and family? Set one of the following tunes as your ringtone.
Mosquito Sound
What can be more infuriating than a high-pitched mosquito sound that just won’t stop? With a ringtone like that, you’re bound to be noticed in any group of people.
Be careful though, as it might lead to you hating your phone or even destroying it eventually.
Geico Commercial Ringtone
It’s hard to find someone who didn’t love Geico commercials. In the old ads they used a ringtone that people instantly loved. You can even find an hour-long looped version of it on YouTube. It’s loud, funky, and upbeat. Has all the qualities of a great free mobile ringtone.
Cuckoo Clock Tune
Cuckoo clock might seem like a nice even nostalgic sound at first. But as soon as you set it as your ringtone, you’ll notice how irritating it is. For you and everyone around you. For maximum effect, set it as your message and alarm sound as well.
How To Change Your Ringtone

When you’re done browsing through different options and know exactly what your phone should sound like next, you can download your ringtone from one of the free websites. After that, it’s time to set it as your ringtone. The procedures differ for Android and iOS.
Android

After you download the ringtone, go to the File Manager and move it from downloads to the ringtone folder.
Then go to your phone Settings > Sound > Ringtone. Now you can set it as your call, message, or even alarm sound.

For iOS, the process is much more complicated because of security restrictions. Have a look at our guide on how to create your own custom ringtones using iTunes to learn the procedure.
What Does Your Phone Say?
Having a favorite movie soundtrack as your ringtone is rather common. If you’re really looking to stand out, you’ll need to dig deeper.
Thankfully, one of the best things about owning a smartphone is the many ways to personalize it. Whether it’s a Tetris soundtrack or the sound of your wife’s snoring that you want as your ringtone, the possibilities here are infinite.

The Polaroid Lab uses the light from your phone’s screen to turn digital photos into Polaroids – gpgmail

When all of us are carrying phones that can snap a thousand photos a minute and are connected to cloud systems that can store millions, there’s an undeniable charm to physical photos. The ones deemed worthy; the ones so special that they must be transformed from bit to atom.

While photo printers are nothing new, Polaroid is twisting up the concept (and rebooting an idea from a few years back) with the “Polaroid Lab”. It’s a $129 tower that uses the light from your phone’s screen, bounced off a series of mirrors, to make a proper Polaroid from the photos you’ve already taken.

Open your photo in Polaroid’s companion app, place your phone (any iPhone after the 6S, and ‘current models of Samsung, Huawei, Google Pixel, and One Plus’ Android handsets) on top of the tower, and push the red button. A few seconds later, out pops a grey Polaroid. Did it work? You’ll have to wait a few minutes for it to develop, just like the good (?) ol’ days.

Is using light and mirrors better than just sending a picture to a printer over Bluetooth or WiFi and blasting the ink out from a cartridge? Maybe not. But it’s neat! It’s physical and sciencey and fun — and, arguably, as close as you can get to having a “true” Polaroid picture of a moment that’s already happened.

The company says that the Polaroid Lab works with its existing I-Type and 600 series films… which, as any enthusiast could tell you, doesn’t come cheap. Expect each photo printed here to cost you a buck or two. That’s a bit steeper than many at-home printers and definitely pricier than just blasting out some 4x6s at Costco, but this thing will almost certainly still find its audience amongst those going for a certain look.

There’s also a way to “blow up” one photo across a bunch of Polaroids, if you’ve got the film to spare. Here’s a demo video of what that looks like:

If the whole concept seems familiar, you might be remembering the Impossible Instant Lab — a product of a veeeery similar vein that raised over half a million dollars on Kickstarter back in 2012. The Impossible Instant Lab was discontinued in July of 2017… just a few months after the team behind it acquired the rights to the Polaroid brand. This seems to be a reboot of the concept, now with the added weight and officialness of the Polaroid name thrown behind it.

The team behind the Polaroid Lab says it should hit the shelves by October 10th.

The LG G8X Is the Company’s Latest Attempt to Make Dual-Screen Phones a Thing

Smartphones have basically gotten as large as they can reasonably get without some sort of radical design change. Samsung and Huawei are working with foldable OLED technology to allow phones to transform into tablets, but LG is still pushing the dual-screen design. The new G8X is the latest phone with one of the company’s snap-on Dual Screen accessories. Even with some new design refinements, this is going to be a tough sell.

As you might have guessed, the LG G8X ThinQ is a modified version of the G8 that launched earlier this year. It ditches the silly and almost inoperable motion controls, allowing for a smaller display notch. Inside, it’s a typical 2019 flagship phone with a Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. There’s also a headphone jack, which is something of an anomaly these days.

The phone itself isn’t the interesting part; it’s how the phone interacts with LG’s latest Dual Screen case. The 6.4-inch OLED in the phone clocks in at 2340 x 1080 and the case has an identical OLED. This is a change from past Dual Screen accessories which didn’t always match the phone’s display. In fact, the case even has a fake display notch at the top for its non-existent camera. There’s another display on the outside of the Dual Screen case as well. This 2.1-inch monochrome panel lets you quickly check the time and notifications without opening the phone.

Past Dual Screen cases also relied on pogo pins on the back of the phone for connectivity, but this one connects to the phone via the USB Type-C port. LG also says it’s less of a drain on the phone’s battery, which has grown to 4,000mAh from 3,500mAh in the previous G8.

With the Dual Screen case connected, you can run two apps side-by-side on the G8X. Those could be two separate web pages or something more elaborate like a game and a video player. You can even turn the phone into a miniature laptop by pulling up LG’s keyboard app on one screen with an app in landscape on the other.

At this point, you may think this sounds like a good deal. After all, flip cases for phones are not exactly a new idea and plenty of people like them. However, like all LG Dual Screen systems, this thing is bulky at about 15mm thick and 326 grams. For comparison, the Galaxy Fold only weighs 263 grams, and it’s about half a millimeter thicker when closed. App developers need to get on-board to enable advanced functionality, too. LG will have to move a lot of units to have any hope of significant support, and that’s far from a certainty.

LG will ship the G8X ThinQ in the fourth quarter of the year. Specific market availability and pricing will be announced closer to release.

Sony Is Back to Making Compact Phones With the Xperia 5

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

It is traditional for Sony to launch two flagship phones per year, so naturally, everyone expected its big IFA 2019 announcement to be the Xperia 2. After all, it released the Xperia 1 earlier this year. Instead, Sony unveiled the Xperia 5. The numbering scheme is unusual because this phone is essentially a smaller version of the Xperia 1, and that could make a lot of people very happy.

For years, Sony was the only smartphoneSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce maker that resisted the trend toward larger and larger phones. Companies that did make “mini” versions of their phones often hobbled them in some way to keep the price down. Sony simply made “Compact” editions of its larger flagship phones with all the same features and specs. It moved away from that as sales slumped, but the Xperia 5 could be a return to form.

The Xperia 1 sports a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display, but it’s a 21:9 ratio. That makes it very tall and narrow. Thus, it was more comfortable to hold in one hand than a 16:9 or 18:9 phone with the same diagonal measurement. Although, the overall length made the phone somewhat awkward at times. The Xperia 5 has a 6.1-inch OLED at 1080p, and it’s still 21:9. At just 68mm wide, it’ll be easy to use one-handed, provided you don’t have to reach up to the top of the screen too often. By comparison, the Note 10+ is almost a full centimeter wider.

On the inside, the Xperia 5 has almost the same setup as the Xperia 1. There’s a Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. The battery is necessarily a little smaller at 3,140mAh (3,300mAh in the Xperia 1), but the lower resolution display should more than make up for that. The phone runs Android 9 Pie, and Android 10 just launched a few days ago. It’s not uncommon for phones launched each fall to ship with a year-old version of Android, and Sony’s track record with Android updates is spotty at best.

The Xperia 5’s triple-camera system includes a 12MP main unit, a 12MP telephoto, and a 12MP wide-angle shooter. Sony says the camera app uses the same autofocus technology found in its line of Alpha mirrorless cameras. Although, Sony’s software processing has fallen behind the likes of Google and Samsung.

The Xperia 5 should be available for pre-order next week in Europe with shipping in October. We don’t have a price, nor confirmation of a US launch timeline just yet.

Light Phone’s founders discuss life beyond the smartphone – gpgmail

For a seemingly tough pitch, Light has had little trouble getting noticed. The company has run two successful crowdfunding campaigns for a pair of minimalist phones designed to augment or replace the smartphone. Today the startup announced that it will be shipping the second version of the handset, which introduces a handful of features back into the product, like texting.

Ahead of the launch, we spoke to Light’s founders, Kaiwei Tang and Joe Hollier, about funding, feature glut and the future of the handset.

How it all began

Brian Heater: The project essentially started as an in-house at Google, is that correct?

Kaiwei Tang: We met in 2014 in Google’s incubator called 30 Weeks. That’s where we met and started talking about Light Phone eventually.

Joe Hollier: 30 Weeks program was an experiment that came out of the Google creative lab, and their hypothesis was that if given the right resources, guidance, designers might be able to create new creative startups, and that designers should be on the founding table of companies.

So their hypothesis was that we as designers would be able to imagine a new going to startup in the software application space, and then through designing the end product, which is how the Google creative lab works, we’d be able to inspire the engineers and make the funding investors that we would need to make the product a reality.

Brian: What did you see in the market that wasn’t being fulfilled by countless different smartphone companies?

Joe: People were feeling overwhelmed by their smartphone and craving some escape, and we didn’t really see an escape.

Phones, laptops and game consoles get tariff reprieve until December – gpgmail

Electronics manufacturers are no doubt breathing a collective sigh of relief this morning at the news that the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has delayed tariffs on a number of categories.

A long list of exports, including livestock, foodstuff and clothing will have the additional 10 percent tariff imposed on September 1. Others, including “cell phones, laptop computers, video game consoles, certain toys, computer monitors, and certain items of footwear and clothing” have simply been delayed until December 15.

It seems the fees are an inevitability, but many might be able to scrape through just in time for the holidays.

“Certain products are being removed from the tariff list based on health, safety, national security and other factors and will not face additional tariffs of 10 percent,” the USTR writes. “Further, as part of USTR’s public comment and hearing process, it was determined that the tariff should be delayed to December 15 for certain articles.”

That list includes a wide range of electronics, from “telephones for cellular networks or for other wireless networks” to “telephone answering machines” and “cassette players (non‐recording) designed exclusively for motor‐vehicle installation.”

Stock prices for companies like Apple have already seen a positive bump following the news. The White House is expected to have additional trade talks with China next month in Washington, though Trump has since cast some doubt.

Asked by reporters whether he might cancel talks, the President answered, “Maybe. We’ll see what happens.”

Huawei’s in-house OS could show up on phones this year – gpgmail

Huawei has almost certainly been working on a software contingency plan for some time now, prepping for a worst case scenario. When the U.S. announced that it was blacklisting the Chinese hardware giant earlier this year, those plans were likely accelerated.

One of the things that’s still unclear, however, is what role the company’s Hongmeng OS will fill. Recent reports have suggested that the operating system was built for IoT and other industrial applications. However, the software may also be forked specifically to run on low-end mobile devices.

State-run media outlet Global Times issued a report based on sources this morning suggesting that Hongmeng could appear on a low-end phone later this year. The OS is clearly far less robust than Android in its current state, but could wind up on a new device priced at 2,000 yuan (~$290). The report adds that Huawei is set to reveal the operating system in full later that this week at its Developer Conference in Dongguan, China.

At present, Hongmeng doesn’t appear purpose-built to replace Google’s operating system, but Huawei is getting ready for the possibility of a future that completely cuts the company off from access to U.S.-built hardware and software. For the time being, at least, the company seems focused on continuing to use Android for its high-end flagships, while potentially building out Hongmeng on more entry-level devices.

Google’s Pixel Phones Will Soon Be Able to Speak to 911 Operators

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Google’s Duplex feature on Android phones can be a lifesaver if you just don’t have time to call and set up a reservation for yourself. A similar feature coming to select Android phones could be a real lifesaver, though. Automated 911 calls will soon be able to contact emergency services and relay your exact location without you saying a word.

While the new emergency calling feature is similar to Duplex, you don’t initiate it the same way. Duplex is built into Assistant, so you just ask it to call someplace and that all happens in the background. The automated call for help is part of the Google Phone app. After calling emergency services, the phone will show three buttons for medical, police, and fire. Tapping any of them will start the robot voice.

The unfailingly calm robot lady will tell the 911 operator that it’s a robot calling on your behalf before giving your location and the reason for your call (medical, fire, or police). Importantly, your Android deviceSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce is speaking to the emergency operator, not a Google server as in the case of Duplex. So, all the information relayed to the operator stays between you and emergency services. You can see the script on the screen as it’s read, and the call remains open the entire time. So, you can speak to the operator as well, should you be able to do so.

Google says this feature could be invaluable in situations where someone cannot speak to emergency operators because they’re injured or under duress. Many emergency call centers get GPS information from phone calls automatically, but the address in the message can help confirm and get help to you faster.

The bad news is that most Android users won’t have this feature. It’s coming to Pixel phones, of course. Google has full control over the software on those phones, and the automated emergency calls are part of the Google Phone app. It also says that select other phones will get the feature, but doesn’t list them. Many device makers like Samsung, LG, and OnePlus create their own phone apps separate from Google’s. Presumably, devices in the Android One program and Motorola’s almost stock phones could get this feature in the future.
