Video conferencing platform Zoom is planning to offer stronger encryption for video calls for its paid customers and not for users with free accounts. The discussion of encryption enhancements for paid users follows almost a month after the release of Zoom version 5.0.
“Zoom’s approach to end-to-end encryption is very much a work in progress – everything from our draft cryptographic design, which was just published last week, to our continued discussions around which customers it would apply to,” a company spokesperson told The Verge.
Video meet app Zoom had announced that after May 30, all its clients on older versions would receive a forced 5.0 update when trying to join meetings as GCM encryption would be fully enabled across the platform.
After facing several security and privacy issues, Zoom in April released a much-awaited 5.0 update to its popular video conferencing service with several security and privacy improvements.
The new features include improved AES 256-bit GCM encryption, data routing control and improved host controls.
Zoom has announced the acquisition of secure messaging and file-sharing service Keybase, as part of its 90-day pledge to address privacy and security issues with its own platform.

$100 Million Paid – One Billion in Sight for Hackers- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

One hundred million is an enormous number. Today we celebrate with all our hackers the phenomenal milestone of a hundred million dollars in bounties. Hack for Good! Yet we should know that we are only getting going. The digital world is not safe and secure yet. Much more work awaits us. We have one hundred million more bugs to find.
As of May 26, 2020, Tempemail has paid out $100,000,000 in rewards to hackers for their fantastic work in finding security flaws in software. Customers have fixed the holes, preventing cyber criminals from breaking in. Tens of thousands of ethical hackers all over the world have come together to harden our digital connected society. The one hundred million dollars they have earned in recognition of their creative work has paid for food, clothing, homes, vehicles, tuition, travel and pursuit of dreams long held. Software is better for the hackers and hackers are better for the bounties.
There is another 100 million number. We estimate that there are around 100 million security vulnerabilities still out there in the wild. These are the holes through which criminals break in as they look to steal data, install malware, disrupt vital operations, distort facts or threaten democracies. It will take years to find and fix all those bugs. But it also will happen. Although it is early days, we can already see that hacker-powered security is an order of magnitude or two stronger than all the power of blackhats, criminals and nefarious nation states. Time is on the side of good hacking. When we pool our resources and defend ourselves together, there is no adversary that can outpower us.
So far in our history, Tempemail has delivered about 170,000 valid vulnerability reports to its customers. It is impossible to know exactly how many cyber breaches have thereby been averted but we can estimate that it is thousands or perhaps over ten thousand. With the average cost of breach somewhere around $8 million, the savings are in the tens of billions.
Hacker-powered security has already made the world much more secure. And with three quarters of a million of hackers signed up, we are making sure we have the capacity to keep finding vulns and helping customers even as the volume of software keeps increasing at a tremendous rate. With a community that size, we represent the creative and inquisitive power of around 65 quadrillion neurons. There is no cybersecurity challenge that a large group of human brains acting towards a common goal cannot tackle.
The international community of hackers is creating a movement the world hasn’t seen before. Hacking is a philosophy, a mindset, and a way of life. They are motivated by the challenge, learning, protecting information, helping others, financial benefits and simply doing good in the world. The professional benefits shine through in our 2020 Hacker Report, with 44% saying they hack to help advance their own careers. In fact, I have a few predictions for what this community’s future holds.
– Within the next 15 years, we expect to have produced over 500 Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) out of our hacker ranks. These skilled and motivated people will help reduce cyber risk in key commercial enterprises and government agencies.
– As a result of their creativity and tenacity, we predict hackers will have earned $1 billion in bug bounties within five years, protecting companies and governments alike from persistent and ephemeral threats.
With the COVID-19 crisis hitting the world, there are suddenly much more digital assets exposed to cyber threats, yet much less budgets to spend. How do you manage your security operations in such challenging environments? Defense must grow but costs must shrink. The answer is hacker-powered security. The best hackers in the world stand ready to help you. You get their full brain power, but you share the cost burden with other customers. What you pay is only the exact fraction that is serving you.
The return on investment (ROI) of this model is out of this world. Hacker-powered security has saved the world billions in cyber breaches that did not get to happen, yet it has cost only $100 million in bounties so far.
Let us today celebrate the bounties paid. The heroes in all of this are the hackers. They have learned their trade on their own. They are voluntarily helping companies, governments, you and me. Customers have paid them $100 million in rewards for their finds. That enormous amount of money has already started to change society. Smart people all over the world are seeing an opportunity that they previously did not have access to. Hacker-powered security is not only making the software applications of companies and governments more secure. It is also democratizing and spreading economic opportunity around the world to everyone with that particular type of curiosity and tenacity.
Hackers win, companies win, governments win – and we all win. With the vital help of hackers, we are on a path to building a digital civilization with privacy, safety, security and trust built in. When we hack for good, we will have a future we can depend on and thrive in.

1 Indian firm paid Rs 8 crore on average to rectify ransomware: Report- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
An Indian firms paid over Rs 8 crore ransom on average to mitigate the impact of ransomware on its operations and overall, 82 per cent Indian firms were hit by ransomware in the past 12 months, a 15 per cent increase from 2017, a new report said.
Two out of three (66 per cent) organisations hit by ransomware in India admitted paying the ransom.
Data was encrypted in 91 per cent of attacks that successfully breached an organisation in India. The average cost of addressing the impact of such an attack in India, including business downtime, lost orders, operational costs, and more, was a little over Rs 8 crore.
Delhi topped the list as 85 per cent organisations in the national capital were hit by ransomware attacks in the past 12 months, followed by Bengaluru (83 per cent) and Kolkata (81 per cent).
At fourth spot was Mumbai-based firms (81 per cent), Chennai (79 per cent) at sixth place and Hyderabad (74 per cent) seventh, according to the “state of ransomware 2020” global survey by cybersecurity firm Sophos.
Ransomware is a form of malware that encrypts a victim’s files. The attacker then demands a ransom from the victim to restore access to the files.
According to Chester Wisniewski, principal research scientist, Sophos, organizations may feel intense pressure to pay the ransom to avoid damaging downtime.
“On the face of it, paying the ransom appears to be an effective way of getting data restored, but this is illusory. Paying the ransom makes little difference to the recovery burden in terms of time and cost,” he said.
This could be because it is unlikely that a single magical decryption key is all that’s needed to recover.
“Often, the attackers may share several keys and using them to restore data may be a complex and time-consuming affair,” said Wisniewski.
According to the report, only 8 per cent of victims in India were able to stop the attack before their data could be encrypted, compared with a global average of 24 per cent.
Nearly 29 per cent of the IT managers surveyed were able to recover their data from backups without paying the ransom. Globally, the average cost of recovery is $1.4 million if organisations pay the ransom and $730,000 if they don’t.
The survey polled 5,000 IT decision makers in organisations in 26 countries across six continents. Every organization in India that paid the ransom got their data back, although this was not always the case elsewhere.
Globally, nearly 5 per cent of public sector organizations paid the ransom but didn’t get their data back. In fact, 13 per cent of the public sector organizations surveyed never managed to restore their encrypted data, compared to 6% overall.
“An effective backup system that enables organizations to restore encrypted data without paying the attackers is business critical, but there are other important elements to consider if a company is to be truly resilient to ransomware,” informed Wisniewski.

Revealed: Amazon told workers paid sick leave law doesn’t cover warehouses | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon workers in southern California’s industrial heartland say the company’s policies are forcing sick employees to work and that warehouses are refusing to comply with a state paid sick leave law meant to prevent Covid-19 outbreaks.
In the Inland Empire region outside Los Angeles, Amazon workers told the Guardian they fear losing their jobs if they are ill and stay home. At least four Amazon warehouses in the region have recorded Covid-19 cases.
On 1 May, Amazon ended a policy allowing unlimited unpaid time off, a measure adopted at the start of the coronavirus crisis that allowed workers to take time off for any reason. They would forgo wages, but if they were concerned about their safety or had new childcare responsibilities due to lockdowns, they could stay home without losing their jobs.
Without the policy, workers say they could now be fired if they miss shifts. They worry the reversal will result in sick and vulnerable people showing up for shifts because they can’t risk termination. The health concerns are particularly serious in the Inland Empire, which has some of the worst air quality in the US and disproportionately high rates of asthma and other respiratory illnesses.

Employees also shared emails showing that Amazon has dismissed some paid sick leave requests by claiming a California law intended to provide supplemental sick leave during the pandemic does not apply to the warehouses.
“I’m afraid to come to work, but I don’t have a choice,” said Eddie, a 48-year-old San Bernardino worker with diabetes, who asked to go by his middle name and works in one of the facilities that had an outbreak. “I shouldn’t be there. We’re risking our safety for the company … The more I think about it, the more stressed I get.”
“We are a vector of this disease,” said one worker at a warehouse in San Bernardino. The 27-year-old, who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation, recovered from pneumonia last year and is at high risk of serious complications if they contract Covid. “There shouldn’t even be a debate about this. It’s incredibly nerve-racking.”

The Inland Empire, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, was once home to the west coast’s largest steel plant, a major air force base and an agricultural economy. Today, the historically rural area is a hub for distribution centers and the logistics industry, with huge warehouses for Amazon, UPS, Walmart and other retailers. The sector has added more than 50,000 jobs over the last decade as e-commerce has boomed, but a majority of families in the region don’t earn enough to make ends meet.
On 16 April, the California governor, Gavin Newsom, passed an executive order providing food sector workers two weeks of supplemental paid sick leave if they have to isolate due to Covid-19 concerns. The law covers “workers at warehouses where food is stored” and is aimed at protecting consumers from the virus and offering additional support to essential workers whose jobs involve the food supply.
Amazon warehouses in the industrial neighborhoods of San Bernardino and Riverside counties handle a wide range of packages, including food items. But employees say that when they have asked about Newsom’s order in recent weeks, the human resources department has ignored their questions or responded that the facilities are not considered part of the food sector.
The 27-year-old worker with a history of pneumonia works at a sort center and has been responsible for helping package a range of pantry food items. When they asked HR about the paid sick leave law for food workers, the company directed them to steps they could take to request unpaid time off.
A labor spokesperson for the state, however, told the Guardian that the law does apply to warehouses such as Amazon’s centers, noting that the order has a broad definition of “food facility”, which includes any operations that store or package food for human consumption.
Eileen Hards, an Amazon spokeswoman, declined to answer specific questions about Newsom’s order or whether the company has provided this form of paid sick leave, saying in an email: “Amazon has complied with all requirements given by the State.”
The company says in addition to the time off it provided before the coronavirus pandemic, it now gives two weeks of paid time off for infected employees and those presumed to have Covid-19. But in one recent case, a worker who tested positive only received his pay after a BuzzFeed reporter inquired about it, and employees across the country have reported difficulties getting any sick pay during the pandemic.
California’s law also appears to be broader than Amazon’s policy, requiring paid leave for workers who have to isolate due to health concerns, including if they live with someone sick or exposed, and it says they are entitled to “immediately” start leave upon request.
“People are absolutely going to show up sick. They have to,” said a 23-year-old worker at an Amazon fulfillment center in Rialto, a city near San Bernardino. The worker recently stopped going to work out of fear, even though he now risks losing his job and gets no paid time off. “We’re all crammed in there. It’s gonna get bad.”
A San Bernardino worker in her 40s, who has two children with asthma, said she was terrified of getting them sick but would not stop working: “Necessity is bigger than my fear. I need to pay my bills. If I don’t go, then my family is going to lose my home.”
Amazon confirmed that it had ended its unlimited unpaid time off policy, but the company says it continues to allow the option on a case-by-case basis. Workers accrue roughly 80 hours of unpaid time off over the course of a year, and they can now also apply for an unpaid personal leave of absence due to Covid concerns. But it can take weeks for Amazon to respond to these requests, and multiple employees who asked for this said their requests were “pending” and that they were worried they would soon lose their jobs.

Amazon workers across the US have accused the company of not doing enough to protect their health and safety amid the pandemic. Amazon has fired several employee activists after they participated in organizing actions, and a high-profile vice-president resigned this week over the firings. Meanwhile, Amazon has experienced a boom in sales during the pandemic, with revenues of $75.4bn in the first three months of 2020, over $33m an hour. The fortune of CEO Jeff Bezos has grown by $24bn during the crisis.
‘Infections are going to spike indefinitely’
“It’s wild that we’re asking for an [unlimited unpaid time off policy] to be returned, because even that was never enough,” said a San Bernardino employee in their 20s, who works at a sort center and is on an unpaid leave of absence. “It was a bare minimum so people who could afford to could have the chance to stay home without jeopardizing their job.”

The worker said they had another part-time job they could do from home and had some money saved as they worked toward graduate school: “This is going to set me back.”
Amazon has made changes over the last two months to try to enforce distancing within the warehouses, but the worker said the nature of the job made it hard to avoid other people. Another benefit of the unlimited time off was that the facilities became slightly less crowded, they said.
A 25-year-old who lives in Riverside county and has worked for Amazon for more than two years noted that Amazon was continuing to hire new workers as employees quit in fear.
“We don’t know what these people are bringing in. Infections are going to spike indefinitely,” said the worker, who has a baby and lives with his two older parents, who both have a range of health issues. “If I don’t go to work, I die of starvation. If I come home with an infection, I nearly kill half my family.”
Due to the lockdowns, he couldn’t find any other work. “Me and a lot of others have broke our back for Amazon … It’s almost like the virus doesn’t exist around them and all they care about are their numbers.”
Hards, the Amazon spokeswoman, said the company was “encouraging those who are unwell to stay home and taking extreme measures to keep people safe in our buildings”.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our teams,” she added.

Facebook Ads: 9 Ways to Analyze Paid Social Media – Blog – 10 minute

How can you calculate the impact of Facebook ads in driving the growth of your business?
Is your ad spend reaping a significant positive ROI or are you just wasting your resources on a marketing strategy that isn’t working for you?
To achieve success in any advertisement campaign, there are key social media metrics that you need to track. In this article, we’re highlighting nine ways that you can analyze your Facebook ads performance.
It helps if you use a tool with a complete Facebook ads dashboard to keep track of everything, but the measurements are available directly in the platform, too.
Let’s get started.
1. Monitor Reach and Impressions
The first step is to determine the number of people that see your paid ads. To calculate this, you need to monitor your ad reach and the number of impressions it receives.
Reach and impressions are two distinct metrics that marketers sometimes confuse, but they mean different things.
Your ad reach is the total number of people that saw your ad. For example, if your Facebook ad was shown to 50 users, your ad reach would be 50.
Impressions are the number of times people saw your ad, even if the same person saw the ad twice. The higher the number of impressions your ad gets, the more awareness it garners.
For example, if 50 Facebook users were shown your ads and they viewed it twice, the number of impressions would be 100.
While it is important that your ads get a significant number of impressions, you need to be wary of ad fatigue.
Ad fatigue is a situation where one user sees an ad multiple times while scrolling through the feed. For example, if your ad was shown to 500 people and it has 5,000 impressions, that would mean that the average user saw your ad 10 times.
A single user seeing an ad multiple times would reduce the amount of conversion your ads would generate. For instance, if your Facebook ad was shown 10 times to a user that has already been converted, it would be a waste of resources.
It would be better for the paid ads to be distributed evenly to users who haven’t viewed the ad before, or the ones who have viewed it once and need further convincing.
Not only can ad fatigue annoy your audience, but it can make your entire campaign expensive. So, what steps can you take to combat Facebook ad fatigue?
Automatically pause paid ads with high frequency
Once your Facebook ads reach a high frequency of impressions, you should pause the ads.
If you are running a ton of Facebook paid ads simultaneously, it would be tedious to do this manually. You can use Facebook’s automated rules to automate the process.
To create a Facebook automated rule, go to the Facebook Ads Manager, then click on Automated Rules under Create & Manage.
The next step is to click the green Create Rule button. Next, you apply the rule to All Active Ads and the action would be Turn Off Ads.
Under Conditions, you can choose when to turn off high-frequency ads. You can set the Frequency and Impressions limits to fit the parameters of your business and account activity.
Here is an example of what a rule looks like:

Create new Facebook ads and new audiences
Since you are pausing ads with high frequency, you would need to create new Facebook ads so you can keep generating revenue.
Creating a new ad isn’t difficult. You can do the following to get started quickly:

Change CTAs
Change ad copy or headlines
Use new images or videos in the ad content
Change the image background

These are the steps you can use to create a new audience:

Create a new audience based on customer behavior
Create lookalike audiences based on key metrics like engagement, time spent, purchasing power, etc.
Create new audiences by uploading customers from a file or directly syncing your CRM

2. Evaluate Your Engagement Rate
Engagement metrics are the performance indicators that show you how a user interacted with your ad content.

Some of the key engagement metrics you can evaluate are:

Reactions
Likes
Comments
Shares

Whether or not you should dwell so much on engagement metrics like comments or shares depends on your campaign objectives.

For example, if your campaign objective is to increase conversions and generate new leads, you should be concerned with metrics such as number of clicks. If you want to increase the reach of your content and the number of interactions it receives, you should analyze metrics such as shares and comments.
When your ad receives significant engagement, it signals to Facebook’s algorithm that your ad is worth viewing so Facebook would deliver your ads to more people. It’s one of many Facebook advertising benchmarks that can lead you to success.
3. Track Facebook Social Media Referrals
Google Analytics has made life easier for marketers. With this tool, you can properly analyze the amount of referrals you are getting from social media.
When running a Facebook campaign, it is important that you know the amount of referrals that you are getting from the platform. This allows you to gauge the performance of your ads.

The referral values you get from Facebook’s inbuilt analytics tool can be misleading. Facebook Analytics can show you more traffic and referral numbers than your site actually sees.
How?
If you are promoting a Facebook ad and a ton of users click on the ad but close the window before the page loads, Facebook Analytics would still count it as a click.
If you used just Facebook Analytics, you would think you have a ton of referrals when in reality you have none because the page didn’t actually load. You are more likely to see a higher number of clicks or traffic on Facebook Analytics than you actually got.
With Google Analytics, you would get a complete picture of your actual referral rate.
4. Calculate the Click-Through Rate
Click-through rate (CTR) is defined as the ratio of clicks (how many people clicked your ads) to impressions (the number of times your ad was viewed).
Facebook calculates your CTR by dividing your total number of clicks by impressions and multiplying the result by 100. The result is displayed as a percentage.

FB CTR = Clicks/Impressions × 100

For example, if 500 people saw your ad and 50 people clicked it, Facebook would divide the number of clicks (50) by the number of impressions (500). The value you would get is 0.1 multiplied by 100 to give you a CTR percentage of 10%.
Why should you bother to calculate CTR?
Your CTR helps you to determine the effectiveness of your ads. In an instance where 500 people view your ads and up to 100 people clicked on it, this would show that your ad is relevant.
When your ads are seeing high impressions with poor CTR, it means you are doing something wrong. Maybe your ad copy is off or the service you are offering isn’t valuable enough to urge the users to click.
Increasing your CTR rates can also increase your conversion rates. If you increase your CTR rates by 2x, it’s possible to increase your conversion rates by 50%.

Tip: To increase the CTR of your ads, it is important that you create ad content and offers with a clear value proposition. To get started, it is important that you determine your target audience.

You would deliver more value when you know the kind of content your audience wants to see. The more value you consistently offer, the higher your click-through rate.
To improve your CTR on Facebook, you need to target the right audience, write fantastic ad copy, and use powerful visuals.
5. Measure Your Bounce Rates
You’ve succeeded in getting users to click on your ads and you are now getting a ton of traffic from Facebook. The next step is to find what happens when they get to your site.
Do they just spend a few seconds on your site then leave? Or do they spend time reading from other pages on your site?
If a high percentage of people coming to your site are leaving a few seconds after visiting your site or are just reading one page then leaving, you would have a high bounce rate.
Measuring your bounce rates gives you an idea of the kind of content your audience loves to see.
For example, if your blog post in the form of long guides has a bounce rate of 70 percent, whereas your shorter articles or listicles have a bounce rate of 20 percent, this suggests that your readers prefer shorter articles than long guides. To reduce your bounce rates, you would then have to change your content strategy.
Another reason to improve the bounce rate is because of search engine rankings. A high bounce rate would make Google’s algorithm think that your content is not relevant, hence reducing your ranking in the SERPs.

6. Calculate Your Return on Ad Spend (ROAS)
Return on ad spend is defined as revenue divided by advertisement cost. The higher the return on your ad spend, the more conversion you get.
ROAS fundamentally answers the question, “If I put x amount of money in an ad, how much would I get back?”
This is an important question to ask because if your ads aren’t bringing in worthwhile dividends, then it isn’t worth it. Your target should be a positive ROAS value. This means that you are making more money than you are spending on advertisements.
ROAS is also similar to another performance metric – return on investment (ROI). ROI measures the overall effectiveness of your marketing campaign while ROAS measures the effectiveness of a specific campaign, ad group, or keyword.

Tip: When calculating your ROAS, consider your advertisement budget and click-through rate. Get at least 100 clicks before measuring ROAS.

Depending on your campaign objective, ROAS may not be the primary metric to measure. If your ad objective is increasing revenue, you should measure ROAS. In the instance where you want to drive awareness of your brand, you should be more concerned with engagement metrics like shares, comments, and reactions.
7. Measure Conversion Rates
Conversion refers to the specific action taken by a user on your website. The conversion metric would vary depending on your ad objective. For example, the desired action might be getting the visitor to enter their email address or to make a purchase.
Calculating your conversion rate helps you determine the number of user clicks that end up as paying customers.
To calculate your conversion rate, you divide the number of conversions by the number of clicks.

Conversion rates = number of conversions/number of clicks

One thing to note is that having a high amount of clicks does not equal high conversion rates. It is possible for users to click your ad and not end up taking the desired action.
There are simple steps you can take to help increase the conversions of your Facebook ads.
Create eye-catching visuals: The use of eye-catching images and videos can improve the conversion of your ads. Statistics show that Facebook posts with images receive 2.5x more engagement than posts with just text.
Keep your ad copy short: If your ad copy is too long, Facebook users won’t bother to read it. Good ad copy is brief and avoids technical jargon.
Include a direct call-to-action: The whole point of your ad campaign is to drive your target audience to take a desired action. Use a strong call-to-action to motivate them to take action.
8. Calculate CPC and CPM
Facebook offers you different ways to be charged for ads. The most common ones used by marketers are cost per click (CPC) or cost per thousand impressions/cost per mille (CPM).

CPC and CPM are good indicators of how efficient your ad spending is. It is better to spend $200 for 1,000 clicks than paying $200 for 250 clicks, assuming the traffic is quality.
With CPM, you are charged for every thousand impressions your Facebook paid ads get. The downside to this is that you would have to pay whether or not the ads convert. With CPC, you pay for every click that your ad gets.
The best time to use CPM is when you are testing multiple ad variants. This helps you know which ads would work best, so A/B testing ads is cheaper with CPM.
The disadvantage of CPC is that you get fewer impressions than CPM, especially when your ads have a poor CTR.
CPC and CPM by Ad Placement in Q4 2019.
While Facebook is considerably cheaper than other platforms like Linkedin and Twitter, you can easily waste money on ads if you do not track your ad performance regularly.
9. Number of Page Likes and Follows
Your page likes are the number of people that have opted to follow your brand on Facebook. These are the users for whom your post automatically shows up in their feeds.
The number of subscribers or fans that your page has gives you an idea of how many people love your content, product, or service.
You can see the number of people that like your page directly from Facebook.

You can even take this further by analyzing your page’s Like trends over time. This would include a breakdown of the amount unlikes, organic likes, and paid likes.

While page likes is considered a vanity metric, it is useful to keep track of. Page likes show you the size of your Facebook audience, so if it’s not moving up you’re either losing the same amount of likes that you’re gaining or people aren’t following you at all.
The Takeaway
Measuring your Facebook ads performance is not something you do on the fly. There are several metrics you need to take into consideration. Nonetheless, it is up to you to choose which metrics are most important to your business.
While it is easy to analyze metrics such as reach, impressions, and engagement, you need to take your time to calculate key performance metrics like click-through rates, conversion rates, CPC, and CPM.
Regularly analyzing these metrics would help you determine if you are getting a positive ROI from your ad campaigns. For instance, if your conversion rates are low, it might be because of your ad copy. Improving your ad copy and adding eye-catching images can help increase your conversion rates. With more A/B testing, you can determine if your ad campaigns are effective, decrease your Facebook ads cost, and also get a better ROI from your ad efforts.

Amazon promises up to two weeks of paid sick leave for workers diagnosed with COVID-19 – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Earlier today, we reported on Google’s decision to tell all of its North American workers to telecommute instead of coming into the office. The search giant hoped the move would help to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and keep its workers safe and healthy. Now, Amazon is instituting a new coronavirus-related policy of its own, though it’s more reactive than proactive.
Moving forward, if an Amazon employee is diagnosed with coronavirus or forced into quarantine, that individual will be given “up to” two full weeks of pay. This policy applies to both full and part-time workers, and it stacks on top of Amazon’s recent pledge to offer workers unlimited paid time off if they’re asked not to come in due to COVID-19 complications.
In other words, if you get struck with this dangerous illness, Amazon has your back. While the company is not exactly a shining pillar of humane employee treatment, it’s tough to deny that this is a remarkably pro-worker move — if you catch COVID-19, the last thing you want to worry about is paying your rent or feeding your family.

Amazon isn’t ignorant to the plight of its contractors and seasonal employees, either. The shopping behemoth is establishing the “Amazon Relief Fund,” a $25 million pool of cash intended to support such workers who find themselves “under financial distress” during the COVID-19 outbreak. These individuals won’t qualify for the month of paid time off mentioned before, but they can gain access to funds that would be “approximately equal” to two-weeks of pay if they’re diagnosed with the virus.
If you’re an Amazon contractor suffering from other financial hardships (whether they’re related to the COVID-19 outbreak or not), you can still get a helping hand. Natural disasters, federally declared emergencies, and “unforeseen personal hardships” can all qualify you for a “personal grant” amounting to between $400 and $5,000.
We hope to see more policies like this from Amazon in the coming weeks. The COVID-19 outbreak is serious, and it will take a coordinated effort from world governments, corporations, and — of course — to overcome it.

Sports Direct Workers Paid Less than Minimum Wage – Blog – 10 minute

A business (also known as an enterprise, a company or a firm) is an organizational entity involved in the provision of goods and services to consumers.Businesses serve as a form of economic activity, and are prevalent in capitalist economies, where most of them are privately owned and provide goods and services allocated through a market to consumers and customers in exchange for other goods, services, money, or other forms of exchange that hold intrinsic economic value.
Businesses may also be social non-profit enterprises or state-owned public enterprises operated by governments with specific social and economic objectives. A business owned by multiple private individuals may form as an incorporated company or jointly organise as a partnership. Countries have different laws that may ascribe different rights to the various business entities.

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

In recent decades, states modeled some of their assets and enterprises after business enterprises. In 2003, for example, the People’s Republic of China modeled 80% of its state-owned enterprises on a company-type management system. Many state institutions and enterprises in China and Russia have transformed into joint-stock companies, with part of their shares being listed on public stock markets.

Business process management (BPM) is a holistic management approach focused on aligning all aspects of an organization with the wants and needs of clients. It promotes business effectiveness and efficiency while striving for innovation, flexibility, and integration with technology. BPM attempts to improve processes continuously. It can therefore be described as a “process optimization process.” It is argued that BPM enables organizations to be more efficient, effective and capable of change than a functionally focused, traditional hierarchical management approach.

Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.

Many businesses are operated through a separate entity such as a corporation or a partnership (either formed with or without limited liability). Most legal jurisdictions allow people to organize such an entity by filing certain charter documents with the relevant Secretary of State or equivalent, and complying with certain other ongoing obligations. The relationships and legal rights of shareholders, limited partners, or members are governed partly by the charter documents and partly by the law of the jurisdiction where the entity is organized.
Business Discussions
Generally speaking, shareholders in a corporation, limited partners in a limited partnership, and members in a limited liability company are shielded from personal liability for the debts and obligations of the entity, which is legally treated as a separate “person”. This means that unless there is misconduct, the owner’s own possessions are strongly protected in law if the business does not succeed.
Where two or more individuals own a business together but have failed to organize a more specialized form of vehicle, they will be treated as a general partnership. The terms of a partnership are partly governed by a partnership agreement if one is created, and partly by the law of the jurisdiction where the partnership is located.

I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.

No paperwork or filing is necessary to create a partnership, and without an agreement, the relationships and legal rights of the partners will be entirely governed by the law of the jurisdiction where the partnership is located.
A single person who owns and runs a business is commonly known as a sole proprietor, whether that person owns it directly or through a formally organized entity. Depending on the business needs, an adviser can decide what kind is proprietorship will be most suitable.
Some businesses are subject to ongoing special regulation, for example, public utilities, investment securities, banking, insurance, broadcasting, aviation, and health care providers. Environmental regulations are also very complex and can affect many businesses.

Some specialized businesses may also require licenses, either due to laws governing entry into certain trades, occupations or professions, that require special education, or to raise revenue for local governments. Professions that require special licenses include law, medicine, piloting aircraft, selling liquor, radio broadcasting, selling investment securities, selling used cars, and roofing. Local jurisdictions may also require special licenses and taxes just to operate a business.

The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.

Businesses often have important “intellectual property” that needs protection from competitors for the company to stay profitable. This could require patents, copyrights, trademarks, or preservation of trade secrets. Most businesses have names, logos, and similar branding techniques that could benefit from trademarking. Patents and copyrights in the United States are largely governed by federal law, while trade secrets and trademarking are mostly a matter of state law. Because of the nature of intellectual property, a business needs protection in every jurisdiction in which they are concerned about competitors.
Many countries are signatories to international treaties concerning intellectual property, and thus companies registered in these countries are subject to national laws bound by these treaties. In order to protect trade secrets, companies may require employees to sign non-compete clauses which will impose limitations on an employee’s interactions with stakeholders, and competitors.

Facebook to publicly track political sponsored content after Bloomberg’s paid memes – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Facebook will provide a way for people to track political sponsored content on Facebook and Instagram ahead of the US presidential election, it said on Thursday.
The move comes after US Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg’s campaign started paying popular meme accounts on Facebook-owned Instagram to post content as part of its social media offensive ahead of the 2020 election.
In tweets sent by Facebook director of product management Rob Leathern, the company said it had added a new column to its free social media tracking tool CrowdTangle to show sponsored content for the presidential candidates.
Earlier this month, Facebook said it would allow US-based political candidates to run sponsored content on its social networking platforms, but that the content would not be catalogued in its overall public ad library.
Bloomberg’s campaign, which is running a highly-funded digital offensive to try and beat Republican President Donald Trump in November, has been working with a collective of influential meme-makers called Meme 2020 to post sponsored content on Instagram accounts over recent weeks.
In order to be shown in the new CrowdTangle column, influencers will have to use Facebook’s branded content tool, which allows them to more clearly tag in an official sub-header that the post is a paid partnership.
Facebook said it had reached out to the Bloomberg campaign asking them to use this tool to properly disclose the posts.
“We don’t have visibility into financial relationships taking place off our platforms, which is why we’ve asked campaigns and creators to use our disclosure tools. On the broader topic of political branded content, we welcome clearer guidelines from regulators,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.
The US Federal Election Commission’s rules do not explicitly address social media influencers, but it does say that public online communications advocating for the election or defeat of a candidate for a fee must include a disclaimer to inform who paid for the content.
The Federal Trade Commission requires social media influencers and content creators to clearly label sponsored posts.
“We push for maximum possible transparency across all of our content, and require that creators adhere to FTC disclosure requirements on sponsored content,” said Sabrina Singh, a spokeswoman for the Bloomberg campaign.
“Whenever possible, we push creators to use platform-specific branded content disclosure tools. However, basic business account tools are not made uniformly available to all Facebook and Instagram creators, so in those cases we require the FTC recommended copy disclosure.”
Facebook’s Leathern confirmed in a tweet that creators who have previously violated the company’s community standards may not be eligible to use the branded disclosure tool.
Facebook also said it was looking at how to increase transparency for branded content run from private accounts. Facebook requires accounts to be public to run branded content, but said it knows some accounts then switch to private.
The tactic of paying influencers – people with large numbers of engaged social media followers – to spread political messages or make content is also gathering momentum among groups such as political action committees.
Other controversial online tactics by the Bloomberg campaign include hiring hundreds of digital organizers to send content on their own social media accounts, a practice that came under scrutiny last week when Twitter suspended a group of pro-Bloomberg accounts for violating its platform manipulation and spam policy.
The billionaire’s team also recently posted an invitation on influencer marketplace Tribe, offering Bloomberg supporters a fixed fee of $150 to provide videos or images to the campaign.

Destiny 2 is getting rid of paid loot boxes for season pass holders – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: Since going free-to-play, Bungie has needed a way to monetize Destiny 2 to cover ongoing development costs. Paid loot boxes, aka Bright Engrams, could be purchased in the Eververse store to obtain cosmetic items. However, Bungie is now removing Bright Engrams for players who own the season pass. This consumer-friendly move is another blow in the recent efforts to monetize games that have already been paid for upfront.
Since splitting from Activision, Destiny 2 developer Bungie has since went on to release their latest major expansion, Shadowkeep. While players have been able to purchase in-game loot boxes called “Bright Engrams” for cosmetic items, the company is now removing them going forward.
Game director Luke Smith published a new “Director’s Cut” blog post in which he talked about the state of Destiny 2 and upcoming changes to the popular action MMO. Smith outlined some of the lessons learned from Shadowkeep including weapon balancing and ensuring that players who play Destiny 2 intermittently won’t get left out in favor of more dedicated players. Included in this update was the announcement that Bright Engrams will removed for players who have purchased the season pass. However, those who are sticking with the free-to-play version of Destiny 2 can still purchase Bright Engrams in the Eververse Store.
Smith emphasized that they “want players to know what something costs before they buy it.” This sentiment flies in the face of Activision’s former plans for the game as well as large publishers like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts who still use paid loot boxes as an ongoing revenue stream. That said, loot boxes and microtransactions in general have been undergoing serious scrutiny lately.
“We want players to know what something costs before they buy it”
EA, in particular, has borne the brunt of the backlash against loot boxes. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was famously ridiculed for including pay-to-win loot boxes at its launch, leading to the most down voted comment in Reddit history. Representatives from the company spoke in front of a UK parliamentary panel where they described loot boxes as “surprise mechanics” that players find “quite ethical and quite fun.”
The tide seems to be changing as of late. Fortnite is a free-to-play battle royale shooter that’s completely dependent on cosmetic loot boxes and a battle pass. EA subsequently copied that model with Apex Legends. Destiny 2 seems to be emulating that model also on some level. The game shifted to a free-to-play model when Shadowkeep launched and allowed players to purchase seasonal passes if desired. With the removal of loot boxes from paid content, this may lead to other publishers following suit.
