DionWired is Officially Closed for Business | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from HyperText

In February, it was learned that DionWired stores were bleeding money for their parent company, Massmart – this came just weeks after Massmart’s January announcement that the stores would be closing.
The initial statement from Massmart read “the Massmart Group has recently conducted a store optimisation project that highlighted a number of underperforming stores in its portfolio”.
The retail group had been in talks with unions about store closures and jobs cuts.“About 1,440 employees could be affected, the Johannesburg-based company said in a statement,” reported Bloomberg.
“Massmart has a total of almost 450 stores across 13 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and about 48,500 full-time employees.”
While Massmart’s division for Game and DionWired were seeing sinking losses, other Massmart stores like Makro and Fruit Spot saw profits from $60-million and $40-million respectively.
Now, after almost three months in a death rattle, DionWired has shut its doors with immediate effect. The store’s official website has been replaced with a banner that reads “DionWired is closed for business – Please not you can still get all your favourite brands at Game”.
Mega-retailer Game is DionWired’s sister company, owned by Massmart as well, and is reported to also be trading at a loss with DionWired.
“All DionWired stores will cease trading at 18:00 on 19 March 2020. Online shopping on www.dionwired.co.za will close at 8:30 am on 19 March 2020. But you can still get all your favourite brands at Game,” reads a Q&A section on Game’s website, which also mentions that there will not be a clearance sale and for customers to take their business to Game for similar product catalogues.
DionWired customer services will also be taken over by Game which will be honouring orders, repairs and warrantees from DionWired purchases.

World’s Largest Gaming Event E3 2020 Officially Cancelled | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Business Insider

Tempemail previously reported on the supposed cancellation of the Electronic Entertainment Expo – E3 – for 2020, with many publications stating that companies close to the event were in the process of pulling out as the cancellation announcements were soon expected.
Not a few hours after the article was posted, E3 released a statement confirming the massive gaming and entertainment expo was officially canceled.

The E3 team is devastated to share this news. This decision was not reached lightly, but it is the right one for the health and safety of all involved. Read our statement here: https://t.co/1uOWxTerN9 pic.twitter.com/gD2IxNACLX
— E3 (@E3) March 11, 2020

“After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors, and our longtime E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020,” reads the statement on the event’s official website.
“Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.”
The event scheduled for 9 – 11 June in the Los Angeles Convention Center has been ongoing since 1995. This is the event’s first-ever cancellation in its 25-year history. 2020’s event was slated by the Expo to have its largest-ever line-up of video game power-houses with companies like Nintendo, Ubisoft, Bethesda, and others ready to announce their latest and greatest titles.
Microsoft was expected to release new information about their next-generation console the Xbox Series X at the event including official retail prices. Sony opted out of last year’s event and was not slated for E3 2020.
The expo organizers suggest that they are going to go forward with plans to coordinate online exhibit experiences with members in order to allow for the showcasing of major industry news announcements. Whether this will include plans from Microsoft and the larger companies are yet unknown.
Popular publisher Devolver Digital is already considering running their own Livestream to make their announcements in place of E3’s stage.
“We thank everyone who shared their views on reimagining E3 this year. We look forward to bringing you E3 2021 as a reimagined event that brings fans, media, and the industry together in a showcase that celebrates the global video game industry.”
The expo is reaching out directly to attendees and exhibitors to provide full refunds.
E3 will join no less than 10 other major international tech events to be cancelled due to fears about the novel coronavirus and its spread. Vox reports that losses expected from cancelling events like E3, SXSW and the MWC are already exceeding $1 billion.

E3 2020 will be officially canceled today – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? If you were planning on going to E3 this year, here’s some bad news: the show has been canceled. As with multiple other events, safety fears over the coronavirus are being blamed for the cancelation, though the diminishing support from publishers will likely have played a part.
We predicted last week that E3 could be canceled following Los Angeles’ decision to declare a state of emergency due to the spread of the coronavirus. Having previously said it was “moving full speed ahead,” organizer the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) changed its stance to “monitoring and evaluating the situation daily.”
The first indication that E3 wouldn’t take place this June came via a tweet from publisher Devolver Digital that read: “Cancel your E3 flights and hotels, y’all.” Since then, multiple sources have told Ars Technica that the ESA will cancel the event, while Bloomberg writes that the organizer will make it official with an announcement at 9.30 am Los Angeles time today.

Cancel your E3 flights and hotels, y’all.
— Devolver Digital (@devolverdigital) March 11, 2020

While we don’t know if the event will be postponed or canceled outright this year, the ESA is reportedly considering an online E3 event to take place during the summer.
The coronavirus has caused the cancelation of MWC, GDC, SXSW, Facebook’s F8 conference, music festival Coachella, and many more events. But E3 was already facing other problems, including Sony missing another year, collaborator Geoff Keighley dropping out, and merchandise/events company iam8bit resigning from its creative director position after just five weeks.
One of the companies that will be scrambling to adjust its plans in the wake of E3’s cancelation is Microsoft, which was preparing a large press conference to reveal more of the Xbox Series X.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Officially Available on PS4 as Demo – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Dualshockers

PS4 owners can now download the official demo for the eagerly awaited Final Fantasy 7 Remake.  Developer Square Enix released the demo yesterday for the upcoming game on PlayStation Network across the world.
First announced in 2015, the recently delayed game is set to be released on April 10th. The game itself is a remake of the ubiquitous classic, Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation (1997). The original game is thought by many to be one of the greatest games of all times and is the most enormously popular Japanese RPG ever made.
Originally releasing on 3 separate CDs, Final Fantasy 7 told the story of blonde-haired protagonist Cloud Strife as he and his party of eco-terrorists set out to dismantle an evil corporation that is destroying the planet for its resources, all the while trying to solve the mystery of pop-culture icon and mega supervillain Sephiroth.
The 2020 remake, however, will not be the entire story, but only about the first quarter of the original game remade with next-generation tech. Other differences will include an entirely brand new combat system that takes inspiration from the previous few Final Fantasy games, especially 2016’s Final Fantasy 15.
The game that’s releasing this April will instead cover the opening Midgar section of the original game, with the developer stating that many more “episodes” covering the story are planned in the future.
The link in the Tweet below will you take you to your local PSN Store.

We’ve just released the free #FinalFantasy VII Remake demo on PlayStation Store.
What are you waiting for? Download it now and experience the beginning of the story for yourself! #FF7R

Riot’s reveals new details about ‘Project A,’ now officially called ‘Valorant’ – Blog – 10 minute

TL;DR: Riot’s Project A is now Valorant. It will feature 5v5 race-to-13 matchplay with eight playable Agents on four maps. The gameplay is twitchy and fast. Riot has it positioned well for esports competitions. It will be free-to-play when it releases this summer only on PC.
Riot Games has named its upcoming tactical first-person shooter Valorant. The studio first announced the game under the codename “Project A” last October, along with a slew of other titles in development. Last week, some details of the game leaked, including the name.

Polygon, which got an early preview of the shooter, notes there are eight playable characters called agents — Phoenix, Jett, Viper, Sova, Cypher, Brimstone, Sage, and Omen. Each hero has unique abilities to help them in combat. For example, Phoenix can cast fireballs, summon a wall of flame, or perform other feats associated with his namesake. Currently, there are only four maps, but Riot plans to add more Agents and maps over time.
Valorant will be a 5v5 FPS with matchplay being a race to 13 wins. Matches will last about half an hour or so. It plays a bit like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive but stylistically resembles Overwatch. While it is heavy on the gunplay, the abilities add a tactical element that rewards players who use them creatively. Riot is positioning Valorant to be a competitive esports contender with both Casual and Ranked modes.

According to the official Valorant website, developers focused on making the shooter available to the largest number of players possible.

“Here’s what we think it takes for you to trust a game enough to invest: 128-tick servers, at least 30 frames per second on most min-spec computers (even dating back a decade), 60 to 144 FPS on modern gaming rigs, a global spread of datacenters aimed at

Sova has a flying owl drone that can fire a dart that will reveal enemies who are hit.
Valorant still does not have a precise release date set, but it’s not far off. Riot says the game will be out this summer on PC and will be free-to-play. There are no plans for console variants at this time, but with a focus creating a new esport, that’s not really surprising.

Capcom has officially removed Denuvo from Devil May Cry 5 – Blog – 10 minute

DRM woes: DRM has never been a popular “feature” among PC gamers, but most of us have accepted it as a necessary evil; a headache we all have to live with to play the latest games legally. However, of all the forms of DRM, Denuvo is easily the most hated — users have accused the “anti-tamper” software of slowing down PC performance and degrading SSDs. Still, companies continue to use it to block pirates and preserve early sales.
And, to that end, Denuvo is tremendously effective. There are a few exceptions, of course, but in most cases, Denuvo-protected games can take months and months (sometimes over a year) to be cracked by pirates. However, not all companies use Denuvo permanently. As we said before, many developers use the tech just to boost critical early sales and reduce the number of illegitimate copies in the wild close to launch.
As such, those developers will often remove Denuvo at a later date, to gain some positive PR and additional sales from the truly hardcore anti-Denuvo crowd. Today, that’s precisely what Capcom has done with the PC version of Devil May Cry 5: the game’s Denuvo implementation has been officially pulled. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s DRM-free, as it might still use Steamworks (we’re looking into this now), but it’s a step in the right direction.

According to some Steam users, it was always possible to play a Denuvo-free version of Devil May Cry 5, but it required some (seemingly legal) file tweaks. Some of those who took advantage of the tweaks saw framerate improvements, so we’ll be curious to see whether or not that remains the case now that Capcom has made things official.
If you’ve been waiting for Devil May Cry 5 to lose Denuvo before snagging it, now is the time to give it a shot. Though it’s unfortunately still full price as of writing (despite launching almost a year ago), it’s available on Steam right now, and it has pretty fantastic user reviews.

Jack Ma officially retires as Alibaba’s chairman – gpgmail

Jack Ma stepped down as Alibaba’s chairman today, handing the role over to the company’s current CEO Daniel Zhang. The transition was announced a year ago.

Ma will continue serving on Alibaba’s board until its annual general shareholders’ meeting next year. He also remains a lifetime partner of Alibaba Partnership, a group drawn from the senior management ranks of Alibaba Group companies and affiliates that has the right to nominate (and in some situations, appoint) up to simple majority of its board.

Ma said in last year’s announcement that he plans for his departure from Alibaba Group to be very gradual: “The one thing I can promise everyone is this: Alibaba was never about Jack Ma, but Jack Ma will forever belong to Alibaba.”

Ma left Alibaba’s CEO position in 2013 and was succeeded first by Jonathan Lu. In 2015 Lu was replaced by Zhang, the company’s former COO. As its CEO and now its chairman, Zhang has taken Alibaba’s reins as it copes with a slowdown in China’s e-commerce market after a decade of explosive growth. The online retail landscape also now includes new players like Pinduoduo, which have gained an advantage by focusing on smaller cities, important growth markets for Internet companies.

One interesting fact about the day Ma chose for his retirement as chairman is that it is Teachers’ Day in China. Ma is a former English teacher who is still nicknamed “Teacher Ma” and has said that he plans to devote time to education philanthropy.

Netflix officially launches a ‘Latest’ section with built-in reminders – gpgmail

Last month, Netflix was spotted testing a new section in its TV app called “Latest,” which would connect viewers with a personalized list of upcoming content due to be released over the course of the current week and the next. Today, Netflix is formally announcing the launch of the feature with a focus on its ability to remind you of shows and movies you want to watch.

Netflix had confirmed in August that the Latest section would be available on its streaming app for TVs, including Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, and others. But it also had a similar feature available on Android and is testing the feature on iOS, it said at the time.

Today, the company confirms the new tab will now be available on many game consoles and Roku, with smart TVs and other devices getting the upgrade in the next couple of months.

The tab itself will feature content from across categories, like drama, comedy, horror, docs, foreign, original, licensed and kids, the company notes. These recommendations will be organized into three sections: New this Week, Coming this Week, and Coming Next Week.

When you see something of interest, you can click “Remind Me” to receive a notification when the title is available to stream.

Netflix says the new feature was inspired by its popular “Now on Netflix” newsletters which help subscribers keep up with the ever-changing content slate.

The feature’s launch is significant for a few reasons.

For starters, it’s a rare addition to Netflix’s top-level navigation in its app which before was limited to Home, Search, TV, Movies, and My List. The Latest section will now get a prominent position, just beneath the Home button.

It will also be an important tool that Netflix will use to keep viewers engaged with its content so they’ll continue to pay for the subscription service. This is now more of a concern for Netflix, which recently posted a disappointing quarter, where it lost U.S. subscribers for the first time since 2011. It’s also poised to face serious competition from newcomers to the streaming market including, most notably, Disney whose soon-to-launch Disney+ will cost less than Netflix and can be bundled with Hulu and ESPN for the same price as a standard Netflix subscription.

The new addition will help to address another challenge, as well — helping subscribers figure out what to watch. Unlike traditional linear TV, Netflix doesn’t just drop you into live TV — you have to make a decision. This often leads to people scrolling for several minutes to find a show to stream, getting frustrated or overwhelmed by the choices, then just launching an old standby, like “The Office.” With reminders and notifications, Netflix can gently nudge viewers towards titles they already want to watch, which could mean less timing browsing and more time streaming.

DirecTV Now’s rebranding to ‘AT&T TV NOW’ is officially rolling out – gpgmail

AT&T’s live TV streaming service, DirecTV Now, is getting a new name. The company in July announced that the service would soon be rebranded to AT&T TV NOW at some point later in the summer. The company today confirmed that change is officially rolling out.

The company teased the rebrand’s launch on its Twitter account this afternoon, but didn’t clarify what it meant by “whole new look.” Many assumed the tweet referred to the fact that DirecTV Now brand — which still remains across all app platforms and social accounts — will finally be removed.

A company spokesperson confirmed the tweet was related to AT&T’s prior announcement of the name change.

That being said, the AT&T DirecTV Now apps haven’t yet been updated in the app stores, so this is the first news that the name change is imminent. (The spokesperson could not speak to the exact timing of the rebrand’s arrival).

AT&T had previously explained that DirecTV Now customers would see the rebranding go live around the same time that the new AT&T TV service began its pilot testing.

The latter is the company’s new home TV service that doesn’t require a satellite. Instead, it offers live TV and on-demand titles over a broadband connection, plus a cloud DVR, and access to thousands of streaming apps like Netflix and Pandora, as well as a voice remote powered by Google Assistant.

Both AT&T TV NOW and AT&T TV will utilize the same AT&T TV app on mobile devices and on their TV’s big screen. There will be no change for current DirecTV NOW subscribers beyond needing to re-accept the terms of service to continue streaming.

The DirecTV Now app will update automatically to become the AT&T NOW app when the changes go live, the company said.

DirecTV Now rebranding isn’t the only change to AT&T’s streaming plans in recent months.

The company also rolled out price hikes and new bundles for DirecTV Now customers, punted on its original plans for a multi-tiered WarnerMedia streaming service, and last month announced its new HBO Max service would instead launch in spring 2020 for slightly more than the HBO NOW subscription of $14.99/month.

The new name for AT&T’s live television streaming service comes at an opportune time, as the DirecTV Now brand has been in the headlines due to a nearly three-week-long blackout of CBS stations while the companies negotiated a new carriage agreement.

That deal had impacted 6.6 million people across DirecTV Now, Direct TV, and AT&T’s U-Verse in several major cities including New York, Chicago, and LA. A new agreement was reached last week, just ahead of the anticipated announcement of a CBS-Viacom merger. (Announced today!)
