Cannes Lions postponed until October- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Cannes Lions organisers have confirmed the annual International Festival of Creativity will not take place in June and instead be moved to October.
Amid the growing outbreak of the coronavirus – and the cancellation of many other global events – organisers of the French festival published a contingency plan last week, but did not put it into action while it was “monitoiring the situation”.
Shortly after, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe began implementing restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus, including a ban on public gatherings and a temporary closure of its borders.
Today (18 March), chairman Philip Thomas and managing director Simon Cook issued a statement confirming the change in schedule.
Cook said: “Our community is facing unprecedented challenges and collaboration has never been more important.
“We are focussed now on planning the festival – and our beating heart, the Lions – to ensure our community is able to recognise the extraordinary work it contributes to business, organisations and society.”
Cannes Lions will now run in the south of France from 26-30 October, instead of 22-26 June.
The four-day event comprises a conference in the main Palais as well as its awards and many fringe events on beaches and boats. It typically attracts more than 20,000 attendees from around the world.
However, it is not the only event in the advertising calendar to be postponed until October. Advertising Week New York and the Association of Tempemail Advertisers’ ‘Masters of Marketing’ conference will now also take place in the same month.
A full breakdown of events that have been cancelled or rescheduled as a result of the coronavirus can be found here.

5 reasons to attend Disrupt SF this October 2-4 – gpgmail

In little more than three weeks, San Francisco will be all aglow with gpgmail’s Disrupt SF (October 2-4) at the Moscone Center. If you’re a part of the startup scene, or plan to be, there is a long list of reasons why you should join the event. (And there is a pass priced for most every pocketbook!) Here are five reasons why:

#1 The people you’ll meet.  At nearly 8,000 attendees last year, Disrupt SF was gpgmail’s biggest event ever but thanks to the CrunchMatch platform for attendees, meeting a potential (and relevant) investor, founder, employer or business partner is never more than a few taps away. Last year, CrunchMatch delivered almost 1400 1:1 meetings alongside tons of organic networking that happened on the show floor and during sessions.

#2 Watch, Work, Network. With the two Disrupt stages running concurrently, there’s always lots of content to take in – check out the agenda here. Pick your sessions, then take a break to take that call or tackle the inbox in one of the many comfy seating areas around the floor. Need a quiet place to take a meeting? There are several semi-private meeting rooms you can book. Stretch your legs in Startup Alley, where hundreds of startups are arrayed in categories, including ecommerce, SaaS, robotics and biotech, or line-up a few meetings through CrunchMatch. Days at Disrupt are guaranteed to be some of your most productive days this year.

#3 The Speakers. No matter your angle on the startup scene, gpgmail’s editors have have produced an impossible (and highly diverse) speaker line-up

  • There corporate titans include Spiegel (Snap), Benioff (Salesforce), Levie (Box), van Dijk (Naspers), and Hewson (Lockheed), Vestberg (Verizon)
  • The vast VC line-up counts the likes of Bannister (Founders), Gouw (Aspect), Dixon (a16z), Royan (Mithril), Krane (GV), Lee (Sequoia), Quinn (Spark)
  • The technologists / entrepreneurs span the gamut of tech from CRISPR to AI to robotics to security, to enterprise and mobility, including Thrun (Kittyhawk), Haurwitz (Caribou Biosciences), Altman and Brockman (OpenAI), Moll (Auris), Adkins (Google), Isakowitz (Aerospace Corp), Henderson (Slack), VanderZanden (Bird).

#4 Startup Battlefield. gpgmail’s signature startup competition brings to the big stage 20 incredible early stage companies that you’ve never seen before. The company names are under wraps until the end of the show but there’s a reason why Ashton Kutcher, Marissa Mayer, Alfred Lin (Sequoia), Ann Miura-Ko (Floodgate), and Mamoon Hamid (KPCB) were eager to step in as finals judges. The 857 contestants to date have pulled in $8.9 billion and produced 111 exits. That Cloudflare IPO this week? They launched at gpgmail Disrupt in 2011 at Startup Battield.

#5 The Extra Crunch angle. Many of the top speakers at Disrupt will appear on the new Extra Crunch stage, so named for gpgmail’s new sub subscription service aimed at helping founders move faster up the curve. On the Extra Crunch stage, it’s the same drill plus we’ve added in time for them to take questions from the audience.

  • Want tips for that Y Combinator application? Michael Siebel, YC’s CEO will share his.
  • Wondering how to go from a zero to a billion dollar SaaS business? Neeraj Agrawal (Battery Ventures) has the plan  from his investments in AppDynamics, Bazaarvoice, Guidewire, Marketo, and others.
  • Intent on building an open and high functioning company culture? Hear from the legendary Ray Dalio, head of Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund, and author of bestseller Principles.

We know that’s a lot but it’s just the start. Disrupt SF is one tech-focused startup event you have to experience in person. Don’t want for the FOMO to hit and get your passes to attend Disrupt SF this October.

Apple is releasing macOS Catalina in October – gpgmail

After a summer of beta test, Apple is about to release the next major version of macOS, macOS Catalina. But not so fast, the new version will arrive in October, according to Apple’s updated website.

As always, this update will be available as a free download in the Mac App Store.

This version completely rethinks the way you interact with media. Instead of using iTunes for everything, there are a handful of new apps specifically designed for each task — Music, Podcasts and TV.

Mac users will also notice a huge update to Photos. It borrows many of the new features that you can see in iOS 13, such as the ability to view photos by days, months or years with a curated selection of shots. The company tries to identify the best photos using artificial intelligence.

If you’ve been using Duet Display or Luna Display, macOS Catalina lets you use your iPad as a second Mac display. It’s as easy as opening the AirPlay menu and selecting your iPad to extend your desktop. The feature is called Sidecar.

Apple is also adding new accessibility features. For instance, you can open apps, click on dropdown menus and navigate apps much more easily with your voice.

More interestingly, this new version of macOS opens up the ability to port iPad apps to the desktop using Project Catalyst. Some developers already said that they plan on taking advantage of that feature, such as Twitter, Gameloft and Atlassian.

Discover the Extra Crunch stage at Disrupt SF this October – gpgmail

I am super excited that we are going to debut a whole new stage this year at gpgmail Disrupt SF that focuses on exactly these sort of founder-centric issues. On the Extra Crunch stage, we want to go behind-the-scenes of how some of the most successful startups have grown, fundraised, recruited, and ultimately exited — what are the lessons learned? What would the founders, builders, and leaders of these organizations have done differently?

Clearly, there is huge interest from folks to give back their knowledge to founders, because we have a deeply talented and experienced slate of folks joining us this year. Here are just some of the great panels you can look forward to:

Building delightful products is the first critical test of a new startup, but finding product-market fit and then growing active users can often remain a huge challenge for founders. We will host an energizing panel featuring Ravi Mehta, chief product officer (CPO) of TinderManik Gupta, CPO of UberDiya Jolly, CPO of Okta, and Robby Stein, director of PM for consumer at Instagram discussing the dynamics of iterating a product at scale, as well as the differences between markets and B2C and B2B products.

Building a strong team culture is one of the most important but ambiguous challenges facing any founder looking to scale his or her team. We are delighted to have Ray Dalio, one of the leading financiers of his generation as founder and head of Bridgewater and the author of company culture bestseller Principles, discussing how to build an open and transparent culture within a startup in conversation with Extra Crunch fintech columnist Gregg Schoenberg. If you haven’t already read our interview with Dalio, definitely take a sneak peek.
As you build your product and your team, the time might come to start to think about venture capital and how to fundraise. So just how do you raise your first VC dollars? We have Russ Heddleston, CEO of DocSend and frequent guest writer on Extra Crunch, talking with EC managing editor Eric Eldon about what the data of thousands of pitch decks show about how VCs engage with decks. How should you order your slides? What captivates a VC? And ultimately, how can you go from deck to check?

SaaS as a model for startups has gone from a strange business model that no one really understood to the darling of Wall Street. But how do you go from zero to a billion dollar SaaS businessNeeraj Agrawal of Battery Ventures is one of the most successful enterprise investors out there, having backed such startups as AppDynamicsBazaarvoiceGuidewireMarketoNutanix, and Omniture. He joins us in conversation with our enterprise reporter Ron Miller to discuss what SaaS startups need to do today to earn that coveted unicorn status.

You can grab your pass to attend Disrupt SF for a front row seat to this amazing content!

Microsoft’s next Surface event is October 2 – gpgmail

Microsoft just sent out invites for its next big event. Set for October 2 in New York, the unveiling comes exactly a year after the company’s last major Surface hardware launch. The timing is certainly right for one last major product push ahead of the holidays, as well.

Last year’s big event featured the launch of the Surface Pro 6 hybrid, Surface Studio 2, some software announcements and the launch of the Surface Headphone line. There are plenty of entries in Microsoft’s line that are due for a refresh, including Surface laptop and miniature Surface Go tablet.

The company also likes to launch at least one new product line at these things. As the Verge notes, the company’s long-rumored dual-screen tablet certainly seems overripe at this point, which at least two years of product research under its belt.

The above save the day invite, which was sent out to reporters today, subtly alludes to the inclusion of several convertible form factors, while paying homage to the Windows 10 logo.

AT&T’s CEO of Communications, John Donovan, to retire in October – gpgmail

John Donovan, CEO of AT&T Communications, announced today his plans to retire effective October 1, 2019. Donovan has for the past two years led AT&T’s largest business unit, which services 100 million mobile, broadband and pay-TV customers in the U.S., as well as millions of business customers, including nearly all the Fortune 1000.

The news comes amid several big changes in that business unit itself, and more in the broader telecom industry.

For starters, AT&T had just rebranded its over-the-top streaming service DIRECTV NOW to AT&T TV NOW, and  just last week rolled out a brand-new TV service, AT&T TV, in 10 test markets.

While DIRECTV NOW (aka AT&T TV NOW) is meant to compete with other over-the-top streaming services like Dish’s Sling TV, Hulu with Live TV, YouTube TV and others, the new AT&T TV is a more conventional — though still “over-the-top” — option that can work with any broadband connection.

However, it locks in customers to two-year contracts, requires a set-top box and has packages that range from $60-$80 per month, much like a traditional TV subscription.

Elsewhere at AT&T, its WarnerMedia division is working a streaming service of its own, HBO Max, which is meant to battle more directly with premium offerings, like Disney+ or Apple TV+, for example. AT&T also operates a low-cost streaming service, Watch TV.

And the company continues to offer pay-TV offerings like DIRECTV (satellite service) and U-verse (cable).

It seems AT&T is due to consolidate these efforts at some point, and Donovan’s departure could signal some changes on that front, perhaps. Plus, as The WSJ reported, Donovan and WarnerMedia head John Stankey had a strained relationship at times. That could because HBO Max will end up competing with other AT&T offerings and services, the report suggested.

In addition to its various streaming ambitions, AT&T is also starting to roll out 5G, a move Donovan spearheaded. The company is also preparing for competition from new players, including what arises from a T-Mobile/Sprint merger, and from Dish’s plans to enter the wireless market.

Donovan had been CEO of AT&T Communications for two years, after having joined the company as CTO in 2008. Prior to his CEO role starting in July 2017, he had been promoted to AT&T’s chief strategy officer and group president — AT&T Technology and Operations.

He previously worked at Verisign, Deloitte Consulting and InCode Telecom Group.

Donovan, 58, was nearing the company’s retirement age of 60, but his departure was still unexpected, The WSJ also said.

“It’s been my honor to lead AT&T Communications during a period of unprecedented innovation and investment in new technology that is revolutionizing how people connect with their worlds,” said John Donovan, in a statement. “All that we’ve accomplished is a credit to the talented women and men of AT&T, and their passion for serving our customers. I’m looking forward to the future – spending more time with my family and watching with pride as the AT&T team continues to set the pace for the industry.”

“JD is a terrific leader and a tech visionary who helped drive AT&T’s leadership in connecting customers, from our 5G, fiber and FirstNet buildouts, to new products and platforms, to setting the global standard for software-defined networks,” added Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s chairman and CEO. “He led the way in encouraging his team to continuously innovate and develop their skill sets for the future. We greatly appreciate his many contributions to our company’s success and his untiring dedication to serving customers and making our communities better. JD is a good friend, and I wish him and his family all the best in the years ahead.”
