A10 Networks Delivers Highest-Performance Virtual DDoS Defense Solution to Protect 5G and Cloud Infrastructures- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article

Today announced it has delivered the industry’s highest-performance virtual DDoS defense solution with its software version of the Thunder Threat Protection System (TPS) solution, vThunder TPS. The enhanced vThunder TPS provides 100 Gbps throughput in a single virtual appliance and can be expanded to 800 Gbps with eight-way clustering. As a result, service providers can build elastic DDoS defenses that can be incrementally scaled during wartime when peak capacity is required. vThunder TPS is compact and efficient, allowing it to be deployed in next-generation mobile edge compute (MEC) environments, conserving space and power while providing powerful DDoS protection.
5G mobile operators and cloud service providers are increasingly moving from purpose-built hardware-centric infrastructures to be more agile and virtualized. These operators need DDoS defenses that can keep pace with this movement toward elastic, virtualized private clouds. The transition to 5G makes this even more critical as operators need to be able to ensure the availability of business services against the potential for large DDoS attacks, particularly during high-visibility times like global sporting events and seasonal shopping spikes. DDoS attacks will only increase in severity as operators expand services to support IoT-driven energy, agriculture, transportation, healthcare and manufacturing.
vThunder TPS provides operators a cost-efficient way to protect their networks and infrastructures without over-provisioning DDoS defense capacity. vThunder TPS provides customers:

Cloud-ready DDoS Defense: Customers are able to gain deployment and operational flexibility with DDoS defenses that support major private cloud platforms including KVM, VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V. A high-performance 100 Gbps virtual appliance can scale to 800 Gbps with eight-way clustering to meet the performance needs of 5G mobile operators and cloud providers.
Agility and Scalability: With A10’s FlexPool® licensing, capacity can be scaled up in hours via license allocation rather than in weeks or months required for hardware purchasing, delivery and installation. Capacity can be scaled back down by reallocating licenses to other points of presence when intermittent demand subsides. A10’s subscription price model also provides lower start-up and upgrade costs.
Comprehensive Protection: When combined with the Orion 5G Security Suite, vThunder TPS provides high-performance DDoS detection and mitigation and protection against other threats across mobile and cloud network infrastructures.

AvailabilityvThunder TPS is available now. vThunder TPS with 100 Gbps performance is available in March 2020.

US says it has evidence that Huawei can spy on mobile networks – Blog – 10 minute

In context: The US has long insisted that Huawei has backdoor access to the mobile-phone networks it helps build around the world. Now, national security officials say they have evidence of this and provided details to the UK and Germany.
“We have evidence that Huawei has the capability secretly to access sensitive and personal information in systems it maintains and sells around the world,” US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien told the Wall Street Journal.
Back in May last year, President Trump, citing a threat to national security, added Huawei to an entity list that effectively banned US companies from doing business with the firm. But the spying claims have gone back years, with officials claiming they’ve been aware of Huawei’s backdoor access “since observing it in 2009 in early 4G equipment.”
The US has said it doesn’t need to show proof that Huawei can access the networks, and it still isn’t revealing the evidence, though it has been shared with other countries. “The US kept the intelligence highly classified until late last year, when American officials provided details to allies including the UK and Germany, according to officials from the three countries,” writes the Journal.

It’s noted that manufacturers who sell telecoms equipment to carriers must include backdoors for authorities to access the network for lawful purposes, but they “are also required to build equipment in such a way that the manufacturer can’t get access without the consent of the network operator,” the Journal wrote. Officials say Huawei’s equipment allows the company to access these networks without the carrier’s knowledge.
“Huawei does not disclose this covert access to its local customers, or the host nation national-security agencies,” an official said.
Germany and the UK were both warned by the US that it would withhold intel from the countries if they used Huawei’s equipment in their 5G networks. But last month, the UK government announced it would allow the firm to build parts of Britain’s 5G infrastructure, albeit with some restrictions.
Huawei has, of course, denied the new allegations. “No Huawei employee is allowed to access the network without an explicit approval from the network operator,” a company official said.

43% of cloud databases are not encrypted: Palo Alto Networks- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
On 5th February, Unit 42 (the Palo Alto Networks threat intelligence team) released the Spring 2020 edition of its Cloud Threat Report, which aims to uncover where cloud vulnerabilities are surfacing in the threat landscape among the widespread shift to cloud infrastructure.
Over the last 18 months, the Unit 42 team witnessed a radical shift in how DevOps teams are building their cloud infrastructure. Organizations are rapidly adopting infrastructure as code (IaC) as they attempt to automate more of their build processes in the cloud. When teams move to IaC, this means they are avoiding the manual creation and configuration of infrastructure in favor of writing code. Although IaC is not new, many organizations are adopting it for the first time—which means new risks.
Some key findings include:
Nearly 200,000 insecure templates Researchers found an astonishing number of templates with high and medium severity vulnerabilities, yet it only takes one such misconfiguration to compromise an entire cloud environment. Just as when you forget to lock your car or leave a window open, an attacker can use these mis-configurations to weave around defenses. This high number explains why, in a previous report, we found that 65% of cloud incidents were due to customer misconfigurations. Without secure IaC templates from the start, cloud environments are ripe for attack.
43% of cloud databases are not encrypted Unencrypted data is like having a house with glass walls; someone can walk by and see exactly what is happening inside. Keeping data encrypted prevents attackers from reading the information stored. Encryption of data is also a requirement of many compliance standards, such as PCI and HIPAA. The recent breaches of Vistaprint and MoviePass highlight the importance of having encrypted databases.
60% of cloud storage services have logging disabled A business would never tolerate having over half of its warehouses not keeping a logbook nor would they omit security cameras on doorways, as that would make it impossible to track who has accessed the facility. When storage logging is disabled, malicious actors from CloudHopper to Fancy Bear could enter the storage system and no one would ever know. Storage logging is critical when attempting to determine the scale of the damage in such cloud incidents as the U.S. Voter Records leak or the Tempemail Credit Federation data leak.
76% of cloud workloads expose SSH (port 22)Exposing SSH servers to the entire internet is a risky practice. Attackers actively target SSH services as they provide remote access to cloud environments. Security teams should focus on moving away from trust-based access models like accounts and passwords toward those that embody the Zero Trust approach of “never trust, always verify.” The fact this service’s exposure is on an upward trend is concerning.
69% of organizations expose RDP (port 3389)Pick your poison: RDP or SSH. When publicly exposed, either of these services allows attackers to knock on your front door when they shouldn’t even know it’s there. Researchers recommend strongly against directly exposing RDP to the public internet. Many alternatives now exist, such as Azure® Bastion, which is a PaaS service offered by Microsoft. The alarming upward trend is something to watch closely between reports.
27% of organizations use outdated versions of Transport Layer Security (TLS)TLS v1.1 was abandoned in 2008. In addition to violating compliance requirements, such as PCI, organizations are putting their customers’ data at risk. Having this number on a downward trend is good news for customer security and privacy

YouTuber uses neural networks to upscale 1896 short film to 4K 60 fps – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Someone was able to achieve remarkable results in upscaling a very old, low-resolution, black and white video from 1896 to a crystal-clear 4K video at 60 frames per second. This is one of many experiments that prove AI tech can be used to improve content that would normally seem impossible to “enhance” in any way.
One of the hot topics in tech for the last few years has been AI, with business leaders throwing lots of buzzwords around – machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, neural networks, computer vision, natural language processing.
These are all different approaches that companies implement and mix together to create intelligent services and breathe additional “smarts” into consumer electronics. Examples abound, but you may have heard about that AI developed by Google that is able to detect breast cancer, or that other one that Instagram is using to fight abuse on its platform.
AI’s complicated history can be traced back to software developed several decades ago with the purpose of imitating how the human brain learns. Today, many companies use something called neural networks, which are essentially layers of densely interconnected nodes that can be “trained” to recognize patterns by throwing large amounts of data at them and fine-tuning their parameters.

If you’re wondering what can be done with them other than say, improving accuracy in autonomous cars, look no further than the above video by YouTuber Denis Shiryaev, who did a cool experiment of turning the famous Lumière Brothers’ 1896 short clip “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat” into a 4K, 60 fps video that looks a lot better than your standard upscaled content.
The original is a modest 640 by 480 video at just 20 frames per second, and is the first example of a number of common cinematic techniques, not to mention one of the earliest attempts at 3D film. As you can see, it’s not exactly impressive by today’s standards, so Denis used a mix of neural networks from Gigapixel AI and a technique called depth-aware video frame interpolation to not only upscale the resolution of the video, but also increase its frame rate to something that looks a lot smoother to the human eye.
Supposedly, there is a myth that people who had the privilege of watching it in theaters at the time were startled by the sight of a fast-approaching train that seemed to almost come out of the screen. However, the upscaled version made by Denis showcases this effect quite well, even though it’s miles ahead of the original in terms of subjective quality.
The Gigapixel AI used for the upscaling process is developed by Topaz Labs and is being trained to “fill in” information in an image using patterns and structures from a large pool of source images that are downscaled so that results can be compared to the originals. Traditional wisdom is that upscaled content usually loses sharpness and clarity, and also doesn’t have any added detail since you’re limited by the source image, but Gigapixel AI doesn’t rely on interpolation like standard techniques to add in the missing pixels.

It can be argued that this new method might introduce erroneous details and is also much slower (according to Topaz Labs) than conventional techniques (bi-cubic, Lanczos, spline). However, the point is that neural networks can be trained to colorize images and add in various missing patterns in things like floors, windows, vegetation, etc.
There is even an experiment to teach neural networks how to paint, such as one conducted by Libre AI’s Ernesto Diaz Aviles, who used PyTorch and Fast.ai libraries to achieve just that. The idea here is to get computers to draw landscapes in much the same way that Bob Ross did in his famous program “The Joy of Painting” where he taught viewers how to use simple techniques in a fun way.
And we’ve already seen examples of what can be achieved using neural networks to visually overhaul old games like Doom and give game characters more natural and convincing animations.
AI is so big that companies like Google, Apple, Intel, Microsoft, Amazon, and others are all racing to buy or invest in every new and obscure startup in the field to foster talent for their various projects. It’s even the subject of ample discussion on the role AI in copyright and trademark law moving forward. It will be interesting to see what’s in store for the next decade, and, thanks to Nvidia, we might have a hint – AI-rendered, interactive virtual worlds based on massive libraries of real-world footage.

Agency networks WPP and IPG restrict staff travel to China during coronavirus outbreak- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Advertising networks including WPP and InterPublic Group have asked staff not to travel to China during the outbreak of the Coronavirus which has taken over 100 lives so far.
Tempemail has contacted a number of the advertising agency networks to understand their travel policy during the outbreak with IPG banning travel or staff to the country and WPP issuing an advisory notice to staff not to fly to the country.
As the outbreak has begun during the Chinese New Year, it is not thought to have been distributive at this time but could become problematic the longer the issue continues on.
“After consulting with our medical advisors and closely monitoring the travel advisories from the U.S. Center for Disease Control, the U.S. Department of State and other public authorities, we’ve decided to impose a company-wide travel restriction to China and Hong Kong due to the Coronavirus health situation. Effective immediately, all non-essential business travel to and from China and Hong Kong will need to be put on hold until the situation improves,” said an IPG spokesperson to Tempemail.
“At this time, this restriction only applies to China and Hong Kong. As always, this decision was made with employee safety and well-being in mind. We do also realize some travel may be necessary so the current restriction does allow for some business-critical travel in certain case-by-case situations. If there’s a critical business reason to travel, the travelling party must provide written justification along with management approval to IPG’s Risk office prior to ticketing. In the meantime, even if you don’t travel for work, there are simple precautions you can take to stay healthy,” explained a spokesperson. “We will provide further updates as necessary and thank you for your cooperation.”
WPP also expects staff to work from home following the end of the current holidays too, in keeping with government regulations.
“We’re closely monitoring on the outbreak as it develops,” commented a Havas spokesperson to Tempemail. “While at this stage we haven’t implemented a specific group-wide travel policy, we are strongly advising staff to follow local government and WHO recommendations. In general, these advise against all travel to Hubei Province and against all but essential travel to the rest of mainland China, and a period of self-quarantine for anyone who has returned from Wuhan within the past 14 days. Some of our offices – particularly those in South East Asia – have chosen to actively enforce similar precautionary measures for anyone with a recent history of travel to China.”
Accenture Interactive declined to comment on its own policy around the outbreak when approached while Omnicom has also advised staff to use their common sense when considering landing in the country. Dentsu Aegis Network had also been contacted but had not replied by the time of publication.
At the time of writing the number infected by the disease was 6065 people worldwide with all but 68 infections taking place in China.

NBN Co to stop overbuilding existing business fibre networks – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

NBN Co is set to stop overbuilding existing fibre connections to commercial buildings and instead use existing fibre – where possible – to serve enterprise and government customers.
The network builder hinted at a change in its approach to serving the enterprise and government (E&G) market in ambiguous commentary to the Australian Financial Review this morning.
It has now revealed that it will make use of existing dark fibre to serve E&G accounts rather than duplicate infrastructure to those sites.
“To date, whilst we have usually installed new fibre connections to large customer locations when requested, we have made some limited use of existing fibre when we have done so,” NBN Co’s chief strategy and transformation officer Will Irving said in a statement.
“However, because other network operators may have spare capacity on infrastructure serving some of these locations it may be unnecessary for NBN Co to duplicate the fibre infrastructure serving those premises.
“We hear the industry, and [we’re now exploring] ways NBN Co might efficiently obtain the use of that existing fibre to serve the needs of business and government customers who wish to be connected using the NBN network.”
The move was welcomed by Vocus CEO Kevin Russell.
“It is encouraging to see that NBN is listening to industry’s concerns, and Vocus looks forward to engaging in this consultation process,” Russell said in a statement.
“It is critical for the long-term health of the telecoms industry that we have the right environment to support private infrastructure investment.”
Pressure release
NBN Co has been under sustained pressure to change its approach to the E&G market since receiving a formal warning for its behaviour and practices from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in October last year.
An iTnews investigation published in December last year found little change had occurred.
Existing players in the E&G telco space remained frustrated at NBN Co overbuilding their fibre networks, encouraging customers to use only full NBN fibre, and NBN Co’s direct dealing with customers, instead of letting retail service providers (RSPs) manage that relationship.
Even this morning, Vocus had issued fresh criticism of NBN Co’s E&G play, calling for the team making direct customer contact to be closed down.
Optus – which until now has stayed silent on the E&G issues – also openly criticised NBN Co last week for overbuilding existing dark fibre and not making use of extensive fibre already deployed to most commercial buildings.
NBN Co has been facing increasingly tough questions on where the money is coming from to finance new fibre builds for its E&G play, with suspicions it is using its residential network to cross-subsidise its enterprise market entry.
That has it in regulatory crosshairs, though pulling back from building as much new fibre for E&G customers could relieve considerable pressure.
The company’s move today represents a major concession to existing telecommunications operators serving the E&G market.
It is proposing either to “request one or more pre-qualified NBN-approved suppliers to provide a proposal to supply dark fibre connectivity services at specific locations” to support a new enterprise customer, or to establish an “industry-wide reverse auction process by which the company would periodically conduct reverse auctions allowing existing fibre network providers to bid, on a confidential basis, to supply NBN Co with dark fibre connectivity services to specified locations on specific, predetermined standard terms and conditions.”
NBN Co said it would consult with industry on “all technical and operational” aspects of its proposal.

3 Major 5G Networks Launch across Africa |Tempemail – Up to date technology news, IT news, Digital news, Telecom news, Mobile news, Gadgets news, Analysis and Reports – Blog – 10 minute

January 21, 2020 • Features, Lists, Mobile and Telecoms, Top Stories

2020 is proving that Africa is no stranger to 5G and all the exciting benefits that come with it – in fact, more and more countries are beginning their network upgrade journey. Just this week alone, three major African markets have announced plans to adopt 5G within the coming months – these countries are South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.
Here’s a closer look at three African 5G network launches:
1. South Africa
Liquid Telecoms has plans to launch a wholesale 5G network in early 2020 – according to a statement published by the South African network provider – making it the first network of its kind in the country.
“Liquid Telecom is to launch the first 5G wholesale roaming service in South Africa,’ said the company. “Available from early 2020 in all major South African cities, this latest fifth-generation of mobile Internet connectivity will enable wholesale operators to create innovative, ultra-fast, and scalable digital services for their customers.”
2. Kenya
“About a week ago, Safaricom was spotted testing 5G in Kenya,” reports TechWeez. And this week it would seem that 5G is very much on the cards for the Kenyan network provider. Reports suggest that 5G could be rolled out anytime now in selected parts of the country – and that the Communications Authority (CA) is on board.
“Yes, the CA is aware of Safaricom’s plans,” says a CA spokesperson. “The spectrum envisaged for the first round of 5G rollout is already with the operators who are expected to reform their formerly assigned WIMAX frequencies in the 2.5 and 3.5Ghz bands.”
3. Uganda
An exciting collaboration between MTN Uganda and ZTE saw the launch of the countries first 5G network on Tuesday, 21 January 2020. The companies showcased the high-speed 5G network under the 60 MHz spectrum bandwidth with an actual rate of more than 1.494 Gbps, which can support a variety of applications, such as Gigabit without Fiber Connectivity, Cloud XR, ultra-HD live broadcast, automatic driving and remote surgery.
“ZTE is very keen on sharing new technologies with MTN,” says Bill Yi, Vice President of ZTE. “We have been constantly enhancing our 5G capabilities and have become a core supplier of end-to-end solutions in the global ICT industry.”

Palo Alto Networks intends to acquire Zingbox for $75M – gpgmail

Palo Alto Networks surely loves to buy security startups. Today it added to its growing collection when it announced its intent to acquire IoT security startup Zingbox for $75 million.

The company had raised $23.5 million, according to Crunchbase data. The three co-founders, Xu Zou, May Wang and Jianlin Zeng, will be joining Palo Alto after the sale is official.

With Zingbox, the company gets IoT security chops, something that is increasingly important as companies deploy internet-connected smart devices and sensors. While these tools can greatly benefit customers, they also often carry a huge security risk.

Zingbox, which was founded in 2014, gives Palo Alto a modern cloud-based solution built on a subscription model along with engineering talent to help build out the solution further. Nikesh Arora, chairman and CEO of Palo Alto Networks, certainly sees this.

“The proliferation of IoT devices in enterprises has left customers facing an enormous gap in protection against cybersecurity attacks. With the proposed acquisition of Zingbox, we will provide a first-of-its-kind subscription for our Next-Generation Firewall and Cortex platforms that gives customers the ability to gain control, visibility and security of their connected devices at scale,” Arora said in a statement.

This is the fourth security startup the company has purchased this year. It acquired two companies, nabbing PureSec and Twistlock, on the same day last Spring. Earlier this year, it bought Demisto for $560 million. All of these acquisitions are meant to build up the company’s portfolio of modern security offerings without having to build these kinds of tools in-house from scratch.

mobile and social media users in emerging markets have more diverse social networks – gpgmail

The latest study from Pew Research Center takes a look at the impact mobile technology, including the use of smartphones and social media, is having on the diversity of people’s social network in emerging markets. For the purpose of the study, Pew surveyed mobile users in eleven key markets: Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, South Africa, Kenya, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Tunisia, Jordan, and Lebanon. It found that users in these markets had broader social networks than those without smartphones and social media.

In the U.S., we’ve been concerned with social media’s ability to create “filter bubbles” — meaning how we surround ourselves online with people who hold the same opinions as us, which is then reinforced by social media’s engagement-focused algorithms. This leads us to believe, sometimes in error, that what we think is the most correct and most popular view.

According to Pew’s study, emerging markets are experiencing a somewhat different phenomenon.

Instead of isolation, the study found that smartphone users in these markets, and particularly those who also used social media, were more regularly exposed to people with different racial and ethnic backgrounds, different religious preferences, different political parties, and different income levels, compared to those without a smartphone.

In Mexico, for example, 57% of smartphone owners regularly interacted with people of other religions, while only 38% of those without a smartphone did. And more than half (54%) interact with people who supported different political parties. They were also 24% more like to interact with people of different income levels, and 17% more likely to interact with people of different ethnic or racial backgrounds.

These sorts of trends help up across the nations studied, Pew noted, with a median of 66% saying they interacted with people with different income levels, 51% saying they interacted with a those of different race or ethnicity, 50% saying they interacted with those having different religious views, and a median 44% saying they interacted with those who supported a different political party.

PI PG 2019.08.22 Social Networks Emerging Economies 2 03 1

The use of social media and messaging apps was found to be a huge contributor here, as it made people more likely to encounter people different from them, the study also said.

PI PG 2019.08.22 Social Networks Emerging Economies 2 04

The report, however, isn’t claiming that smartphone and the related social media use are the cause of this increase in diversity in these people’s lives. There may be other reasons for that. Smartphone owners, in general, may have more resources and money — they own a smartphone, after all — and this alone could help expose them to a more diverse group of people.

That said, smartphones are helping people stay connected to distant family and friends, and build out online networks of people they don’t ever see in person.

More than half of people in most of the surveyed countries said that only see half — or fewer — of the people they call or text in person. 93% said they keep in touch with far-flung contacts. And a median of 46% said they see their few or none of Facebook friends regularly.

PI PG 2019.08.22 Social Networks Emerging Economies 2 01

All this connecting isn’t seen as being fully positive, however.

An earlier Pew report found that users in these 11 countries believe the internet and social media are making people more divided in their opinions and only sometimes more accepting of different views. Exposure to diversity and acceptance of it are different things.

The new report also gets into how smartphones are used. For example, a median of 82% said they texted, 69% took photos or videos, 61% looked up health information, 47% looked up news and political information, and 37% looked up information about government resources.

PI PG 2019.08.22 Social Networks Emerging Economies 0 03

It also examined smartphones’ impact on digital divides, noting that people with access to these devices and social media, as well as younger people, those with higher levels of education and men, were gaining more benefits than others.

PI PG 2019.08.22 Social Networks Emerging Economies 0 04
