Police Arrested Hundreds of Criminals After Hacking Into Encrypted Chat Network – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

In a joint operation, European and British law enforcement agencies recently arrested hundreds of alleged drug dealers and other criminals after infiltrating into a global network of an encrypted chatting app that was used to plot drug deals, money laundering, extortions, and even murders.
Dubbed EncroChat, the top-secret encrypted communication app comes pre-installed on a customized Android-based handset with GPS, camera, and microphone functionality removed for anonymity and security.
EncroChat phones aim to securely exchange data and messages with pre-loaded apps for secure instant messaging, VOIP calling, self destruct messages, and includes a ‘kill code’ functionality to let users remotely wipe complete data in times of trouble.

The handset and its services, which cost around £1,500 for a six-month subscription, had 60,000 users worldwide and approximately 10,000 users in the United Kingdom.
“EncroChat phones were presented to customers as guaranteeing perfect anonymity (no device or SIM card association on the customer’s account, acquisition under conditions guaranteeing the absence of traceability) and perfect discretion both of the encrypted interface (dual operating system, the encrypted interface being hidden so as not to be detectable) and the terminal itself (removal of the camera, microphone, GPS and USB port),” Europol said.

However, the encrypted communication network was not so secure, as French and Dutch police successfully hacked into the network and analyzed millions of messages and hundreds of thousands of images in real-time, “over the shoulder of the unsuspecting senders.”
International law enforcement authorities successfully dismantled Encrochat and disrupted one of the key communication networks used by some of the most severe offenders.
The Tempemail Crime Agency, Europol and Metropolitan Police on Thursday announced that they shut down the EncroChat servers and arrested 746 suspects, including two law enforcement officers, which resulted in the seizure of:

over £54 million in illegal cash,
77 firearms, including an AK47 assault rifle, submachine guns, handguns, four grenades, and over 1,800 rounds of ammunition
More than two tonnes of Class A and B drugs
Over 28 million Etizolam pills (street Valium) from an illicit laboratory
55 high-value cars, and 73 luxury watches

The NCA also worked closely with policing partners to successfully mitigate more than 200 threats to life by preventing rival gangs from carrying out kidnappings and executions on Britain’s streets.
“In early 2020, EncroChat was one of the largest encrypted digital communication providers with a very high share of users presumably engaged in criminal activity. User hotspots were particularly present in source and destination countries for cocaine and cannabis trade, as well as in money laundering centers,” Europol said.

Law enforcement agencies claimed to have cracked the encryption code of EncroChat in March this year and began penetrating data from April 1. On June 13, EncroChat realized the platform had been penetrated and sent a message to users urging them to throw away their devices as its servers had been compromised by law enforcement.

“A large number of suspects have also been arrested in several countries which were not participating in the JIT (joint investigation team) but particularly affected by the illegal use of these phones by individuals active in organized crime, including in the UK, Sweden, and Norway,” Europol said.
“The effects of the operation will continue to echo in criminal circles for many years to come, as the information has been provided to hundreds of ongoing investigations and, at the same time, is triggering a very large number of new criminal investigations of organised crime across the European continent and beyond.”

MTN Launches 5G Network – Everything You Need to Know | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Image sourced from Pinterest.

MTN South Africa has launched its commercial 5G network, providing access to 100 sites across the country.
“Today, from MTN’s birthplace of South Africa, we are stepping up our digital revolution with the next generation of telecommunication technology, demonstrating to all South Africans that 5G is no longer just an idea. It is here, it works and it has the capacity to bring about exponential improvements to our economy, and to the lives of the people we serve,” says MTN SA CEO Godfrey Motsa during the company’s live-streamed launch event.
The network today covers specific parts of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Durban and other smaller towns.
“Our 5G strategy has been years in the making and we are confident that we have built a strong foundation to grow and support our 5G ecosystem,” says Giovanni Chiarelli, MTN SA’s chief tech and information officer, quoted by Tech Central.

Chiarelli says that the launch of the network is due in part by ICASA’s allocation of temporary spectrum. The regulator had allowed certain telecoms additional spectrum in order to aid South Africans during the COVID-19 pandemic that has gripped the country tighter than any other in Africa.
“One of the key innovations driving the broad roll-out by MTN has been a strategic approach to dynamic spectrum sharing, as these deployments overcome the challenges of lack of dedicated 5G spectrum,” he says.
MTN’s 5G runs on four different spectrum bands
What is known as the “golden band.” At 3.5Ghz, MTN offers some of its fastest speeds and lowest latencies. The “ideal spectrum band” has been deployed in sites across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Bloemfontein.

2.1Ghz and 1.8Ghz at 35 sites:

In this band, MTN re-farms some 4G spectrum in order to offer both 4G and 5G spectrum on the same band at the same time. This allows for easier migration of network technology from LTE to 5G. Further, MTN can use existing spectrum assets in the absence of additional high spectrum demand.
This band has been deployed in sites in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
With this band, MTN is set to cover smaller towns and rural areas. Due to its low-band frequency propagation, the telecom believes this will be ideal in such settings.
Small towns covered by MTN’s 700MHz 5G include Port Alfred, Hopetown, Virginia, Queenstown and Tsantsabane.
A high-frequency bandwidth that offers very fast speeds. Ideal for fixed-wireless 5G connectivity.
This solution has been deployed in Pretoria, Edenvale and Durban.
MTN partners with Emerge gaming
Since the advent of cloud game-streaming, the main drawback for platforms in South Africa was always connection speeds.
Most cloud-based gaming requires vast amounts of data to be sent very quickly to and from devices to ensure smooth and fun experiences. Now, MTN says that with its 5G network it can facilitate just that.
“Cloud gaming will do to gaming what video-on-demand has done to TV, it’s a complete gamechanger only this is a game-changer that will be delivered by 5G,” the company said during its launch event.
MTN SA partnered with Australia-based Emerge Gaming to demonstrate cloud game-streaming on a Huawei P40 Pro running on 5G spectrum during the live-stream.
On-stream, presenters played 2010’s Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II on mobile in an effort to show off the network’s data streaming capabilities. Though there were a few noticeable minor latency-bumps, the game seemingly ran smoothly.
The telecom also announced that it will begin to look into AR and VR, as well as high-definition streaming, AI and IoT all powered by its 5G network.

Australia Post to expand its network transformation – Cloud – Networking- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Australia Post is in the planning and design phase of the next stage of its network transformation, which will focus on optimising data centre and cloud interconnectivity to improve data flows.
The postal service laid out initial plans for its network transformation in the middle of last year, bringing 4000 post offices, delivery centres and offices onto the NBN and managing that connectivity via a Cisco SD-WAN.
It has cut over around 1000 sites to date, head of network and workspace technology Shane Hazim told a webinar last week, but even once complete, this is only a subset of Post’s ambition when it comes to transforming its networks.
“From a network transformation point of view, we’re very early – and what I mean by very early is although we’ve transformed about 1000 sites onto SD-WAN, that’s our edge transformation,” Hazim said.
“How we leverage it from a multi-cloud [perspective] and how we pass information or workloads between different types of data centres, whether private or public cloud, is yet to be determined.
“We need to start thinking about our next evolution of network transformation, which is what I like to call our data centre networks.
“That’s our next stage and that’s in the planning and the design phase.”
Hazim noted that this part of the transformation would be driven largely by the data and analytics needs of the organisation.
“It’s all about the experience or … that piece of data that helps [the business] make a decision or provide a different experience for their customer in some sort of way,” he said.
“How do we give insights and information to your business [area] to make smart decisions on-the-fly about rapid change or give them insights and information of what’s going on within their operational network?
“For us, it’s about parcel tracking and deliveries, the quality of an actual service, or a box or something else a customer wants.
“Feeding that information back into your customer [data]sets or to your stakeholders as an organisation [can help] to actually determine how you make different types of decisions.”
From a practical perspective, that meant embarking on a phase of work to optimise interconnectivity between AusPost’s data centres, private and public cloud infrastructure.
The ability of organisations to move quickly and make decisions had been put to the test by COVID-19, underlining the importance of having the right enabling infrastructure.
“The world that we’re moving towards is, how do you gear up your network in the future to be able to pivot and move large amounts of data regardless of where it is, but then process that data fast enough for people to be able to make on-the-fly decisions that enable their business quickly?” Hazim said.
“I think that’s what’s important and what’s come out of COVID. That’s why next year for us it’s all about our data centre network strategy to be able to get a business case approved, to get our C-level executives to understand why we need to do it and how it takes things to that next level, because right now what we’re … transforming is just our branch sites.”

Why PRTG Network Monitoring is Crucial for Efficient IT Systems | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The IT sector has been forced to gear up for a major increase in connected devices as more organisations around the world look at replacing traditional offices with remote working solutions.
This work-from-home migration — triggered by the coronavirus pandemic — means that there more business-critical devices supporting crucial IT networks scattered across the globe than ever before.
And while these connected technologies make doing an honest day’s work easier for employees, it’s also an unprecedented challenge for IT teams who need to keep track of their networks in order to minimize downtime and secure any cyberthreats.
With this in mind, ITNA recently chatted to Reagan Ndangi, account manager at Value-Added Distributor ASD, about exactly what PRTG Network Monitoring is and why it’s absolutely necessary for businesses.
What is PRTG Network Monitoring and how does it allow organizations to keep track of all their systems, devices, traffic and applications?
PRTG Network Monitoring is an agentless network monitoring software from Paessler AG. It can monitor and classify system conditions like bandwidth usage or uptime and collect statistics from miscellaneous hosts as switches, routers, servers and other devices and applications.
Why is it important for organizations to monitor systems, devices, traffic and apps on their IT network infrastructure?
Network monitoring is absolutely necessary for your business. The whole purpose of it is to monitor your computer network’s usage and performance and check for slow or failing systems.
The system will then notify the network administrator of any performance issues or outages with some kind of an alarm or an email. Some of the benefits of network monitoring include:

Staying ahead of outages. What causes IT outages?
Fixing issues faster. In a down situation, time is money.
Gaining immediate ROI.
Managing growing and changing networks.
Identifying security threats.
Justifying equipment upgrades.
Reporting on SLAs.

What is a PRTG reseller and how does one become just that?
A PRTG reseller is an ICT company who has agreed to offer PRTG to end-users in their portfolio. And, in order to do so, has agreed to sign our partner application and adhere to our partner program guidelines which includes their benefits and targets.
Why should an organization consider becoming a PRTG reseller?
Well, if they are interested in making more revenue (which I believe most organization do), great margins and discounts then PRTG is a great product as it enables their end-users to gain full visibility of their IT assets.
It empowers IT staff to not only take control and introduce strategic measures to avoid downtime, but it also helps organisations plan for the future.

Woolworths brings Cisco into large-scale network transformation – Projects – Networking – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Woolworths has revealed it now has over 2000 connected devices in each retail store, a network of over 30,000 access points nationwide it is now transforming the management of.
The company has partnered with Cisco to deploy a software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) and secure access control system across its operations.
In addition to covering its 3000 stores, the SD-WAN will also network Woolworths’ offices, data centres and distribution centres, with work to be completed over the next 18 months.
iTnews understands upgrades have already been made to Woolworths’ data centre network where benefits are already being realised.
The transformation project was unveiled in mid-June at the US version of the Cisco Live conference.
In a video, it was noted that a decade ago, a store had 40 connected devices.
“Now, it has over 2000,” the video states.
“Woolworths has 3000 stores, a network with over 30,000 access points. That’s an opportunity to perform and transform.”
Together with other networked assets outside of its retail stores, it is believed upwards of 86,000 network devices are connected to Woolworths’ network environment.
“Cisco’s SD-WAN and Secure Access is powering our next big step, delivered in a record time, just a few months,” Woolworths’ general manager of IT Patrick Misciagna said.
It is understood, however, that the rollout of Cisco hardware and software is ongoing, with 18 months left to run on the work.
SD-WAN technology is used to manage connectivity between an organisation’s physical sites and clouds, with “real-time traffic steering based on centralised policy”.
Woolworths is anticipating being able to manage its network loads more efficiently and make changes faster in response to network conditions.
The technology is also likely to improve visibility into the performance of the network at different locations.
The size of the deployment is also noteworthy, with the Cisco Live video touting it as “the largest undertaking of its type in the world”.
At the same time as SD-WAN is being deployed, Woolworths is separately upgrading physical connections to its retail stores to NBN fibre, under a deal signed in early 2019.
iTnews reported in September last year that Woolworths was connecting 50 retail sites a week with NBN fibre, for a total of 1200 sites at that time.
It is understood that the company is around 70 percent through a first tranche of 1800 locations identified for NBN cutover, meaning the number is likely to be closer to 1300 now.

MTN to Launch its 5G Network Next Week | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Business Tech

MTN South Africa will finally launch its 5G network next week, 30 June 2020, becoming the first of the telecommunications group’s 22 operations to launch the next-generation broadband technology.
The pan-African telecom is hosting a live event on its YouTube channel that same day. The event will be hosted by CEO Godfrey Motsa, chief consumer officer Mapula Bodibe and chief technology & information officer Giovanni Chiarelli.

At the beginning of the month, MTN began announcing that it would launch 5G networks in major cities across South Africa. The exact locations for these launches have been confidential.

Initially, MTN had been expecting to launch their 5G networks at the start of June, however, according to Business Insider, it experienced issues and “delays in bringing some equipment into the country.”
The company has also confirmed that, like Vodacom, it will be using the emergency spectrum allocated by the government to provide 5G services. Important to note that operators will only get access to the emergency spectrum till November, and MTN has of yet not announcing any 5G services not running on the spectrum.
Vodacom beats MTN to the punch
Rival Vodacom managed to beat MTN in the 5G race, having a month’s lead. The company launched its own 5G network services at the beginning of May.
This network will support both mobile and fixed wireless services and is currently available on twenty-live 5G sites, 18 of which are in Gauteng and 2 in Cape Town.
Vodacom customers with 5G enabled devices, and within a 5G coverage area, are now able to access one of the fastest and most sophisticated network connections in Africa. Vodacom has of yet not made clear what its plans are for the 5G network come November.

China puts final satellite into orbit to try to rival GPS network – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

China successfully put into orbit its final Beidou satellite, completing a navigation network years in the making and setting the stage to challenge the US-owned Global Positioning System (GPS).
The idea to develop Beidou, or the Big Dipper in Chinese, took shape in the 1990s as China’s military sought to reduce its reliance on GPS, which is run by the US Air Force.
Coverage was limited to China when the first Beidou-1 satellites were launched in 2000.
Now Beidou-related services such as traffic monitoring have been exported to about 120 countries.
As use of mobile devices expanded, China in 2003 tried to join the Galileo satellite navigation project proposed by the European Union but later pulled out to focus on Beidou.
The second generation of Beidou-2 satellites went into operation in 2012, covering the Asia-Pacific region.
In 2015, China began deploying the third generation of Beidou-3 satellites aimed at global coverage.
The one launched on Tuesday was the 35th Beidou-3 satellite – with analysts looking at the system’s reliability and how it is rolled out.
“The civil signal from Beidou is no better than GPS or Galileo,” said Alexandra Stickings, a research analyst at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies, a Britain-based think-tank.
“From a defence perspective, it is difficult to say whether Beidou is superior. One hurdle that will have to be faced will be upgrading receivers across military platforms, which will take time.”
Many countries using Beidou services are involved in the Belt and Road initiative spearheaded by China to create a modern-day Silk Road of trade and investment.
“This may prove popular among Belt and Road countries, particularly those who may wish to be less dependent upon the US GPS system,” said Stickings.
“However, Beidou will need to prove its reliability and ability to provide a consistent signal to gain the trust of users in the same way that GPS is trusted globally.”

Network zero-days leave millions of IoT devices open to abuse – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Security researchers analysing a network stack used in hundreds of millions of devices found that it contained serious vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers for remote code execution and data exfiltration.
The software library is made by Treck, which specalises in transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) networking stacks for embedded devices.
JSOF, which started analysing Treck’s software in September last year, found a total of 19 vulnerabilities.
Of these, four are marked as critical, having ratings over 9 under the Common Vulnerabilities Scoring System version 3 and can be considered as zero-days, JSOF said.
Two critical vulnerabilities that can be triggered by sending multiple malformed internet protocol version 4 and 6 packets to devices can be exploited for remote code execution, and carry the maximum 10 out of 10 severity score under CVSSv3.
Another remote code excution vulnerability rates 9 out of 10 on CVSSv3 but JSOF said that in its opinion, it is the most serious of all as domain name system (DNS) lookups can leave the network in which the device is located, allowing attackers to take over equipment through resolver cache poisoning.
Such a vulnerability can bypass security measures and will likely be difficult for firewalls and similar products to detect, JSOF said.
The software library is found in a large number of applications, ranging from industrial controllers to medical devices, printers, transportation systems, aviation, network equipment, government and national security, enterprise devices and more.

JSOF has confirmed that devices from several well-known brands such as HP, Schneider Electric, Intel, Caterpillar and Baxter used vulnerable versions of the Treck TCP/IP stack.
If the vulnerable devices face the internet, attackers could use the vulnerabilities to take them over, or compromise them to lie hidden in networks for years.
Bypassing network address translation (NAT) is also possible from the outside world, JSOF noted.
Apart from applying patches to vulnerable devices, JSOF recommends administrators try to filter out anomalous TCP/IP traffic to mitigate against exploitation.
Products that can’t be updated should not be accessible from the internet unless it’s absolutely necessary, and network exposure for these should be kept to a minimum, JSOF suggested.
Treck has acknowledged the vulnerabilities, issued patches for them and also notified its customers.
JSOF said working with Treck was “initally challenging” as the company appears to have never been the target of independent security research.
Treck also took the information disclosed by JSOF to litigation lawyers, the security vendor said.
After asking vendors that use the TCP/IP stack such as Digi, HP, Intel and Quadros for help, JSOF was able to make contact with Treck and work with the company to address the many vulnerabilities in its software.

Macquarie offer for Open Fiber stake could speed single Italy network – Telco/ISP – Finance- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Infrastructure fund Macquarie has made an offer to buy all or part of Enel’s 50 percent stake in its broadband joint venture Open Fiber in a move that could help speed up the creation of a single Italian network operator.
The Italian government sees building ultra-fast broadband as a priority and has called on former phone monopoly Telecom Italia (TIM) and Open Fiber to reach an accord quickly on creating a single network.
TIM has been in talks for months over a merger of its fibre network assets with those of Open Fiber, but differences over issues such as governance and regulation have thwarted efforts.
“We believe that the entrance of Macquarie … could be a strong catalyst towards the creation of the single network as it could speed up the negotiation given Enel’s sceptical stance on the matter,” Italian broker Fidentiis said.
Open Fiber is a wholesale-only broadband operator jointly owned by Enel and state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), while TIM has both a network and a retail business.
In a statement on Tuesday, Enel said its board had received a non-binding bid from Macquarie Infrastructure Real Assets (MIRA) on June 10 for “the acquisition of the whole or part of the stake”.
Enel CEO Francesco Starace has previously expressed concern about a vertically-integrated operator like TIM controlling a single network, saying it would not meet competition rules.
Analysts have said Open Fiber could be worth 3-6 billion euros (A$4.9 to $9.8 billion), while TIM’s copper and fiber network could be worth up to 15 billion euros (A$24.5 billion).
A source from the co-ruling 5-Star Movement told Reuters the party was ready to support Macquarie if its investment in Open Fiber could accelerate the creation of a single network.
The source, who said Macquarie had outlined its plans to some government representatives, said the Movement was campaigning for CDP to raise its stake in TIM in an effort to break the stalemate.
Sources told Reuters recently that Macquarie was interested in buying a stake in Italian motorway group Autostrade per l’Italia and would be ready to team up with CDP for that deal.
The Treasury and Macquarie declined to comment.
TIM, in exclusive talks with US fund KKR to invest in its own last-mile network, has made it clear it does not want to give up control of the network.
A second source from the 5-Star camp said talks between KKR and TIM had raised doubts among party members on implications for the future of the fixed network, which is deemed strategic by the government.
The head of broadcaster SKY’s Italian operations, Maximo Ibarra, warned on Tuesday a single network must not be controlled by a vertically integrated operator.
