Rishi Sunak, Son-In-Law of Narayana Murthy, Named The Finance Minister of UK- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article

39-year old former Goldman Sachs employee, Rishi Sunak and the son-in-law of Infosys co founder Narayana Murthy, is named as the new Finance Minister of UK. This happened when the incumbent Sajid Javid, had quit unexpectedly over a row over advisers.
This came as an unexpected move, as Sunak was handpicked to take over the ultra-safe seat in northern England, that was previously represented by the former Conservative Party leader William Hague. Narayana Murthy had once said that his advice to his children, including Rishi, has always been to work hard, be honest, and do good for the society.

Sunak had first entered the Parliament in 2015, when he was seen as a rising star in the ruling Conservative Party, ever since he entered the Parliament. Despite the fact that Sunak has already had a rapid ascent through the ranks of the Government, very few had already expected  that the Oxford University graduate would ascend to one of the highest officers in the land.
Sunak has been seen as a smooth media performer and an ultra loyal member of the Conservative Party. He has also been used by the Government to present and defend their policies in TV interviews.
He would take control at a crucial time juncture for Britain’s $2.7 trillion economy. Sunak would be expected to steer the economy through the turbulence of leaving the European Union, and would also be looking after the forging of new trade links that is likely to define Britain’s new relationship with the world.
Sunak’s appointment would make him one of the three ministers of Indian origin in Johnson’s cabinet. The other two being Priti Patel and Alok Sharma. Before joining Goldman Sachs and a hedge fund, Sunak had co-founded an investment firm.

ATO, RBA and DTA named 2020 iTnews Benchmark Awards finalists – Projects- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Every year the iTnews Benchmark Awards recognise the hard work of federal government agencies to improve productivity and service delivery, and this year is no different.
Over the last 12 months, huge gains have been made on some of the government’s most ambitious IT projects in recent years.
These projects extend beyond the function of government itself, with many attempting to solve whole-of-economy issues through the introduction of critical underpinning IT infrastructure.
It seems fitting then that all three finalists in the running to win this year’s coveted gong for best federal government project fall into this class.
The projects include a rebuild of Australia’s tax agent portal, a digital identity ecosystem that promises to unlock $10 billion in productivity and a massive IT overhaul at the country’s central bank.
All 14 categories in this year’s awards have now been revealed. You can read about the finalists here.
Keep an eye out for the first of our case studies on the finalists in the run up to the awards gala dinner on March 7, where we will announce the winning projects.

iTnews Benchmark Awards 2020 Federal Government Finalists

Australian Taxation Officer: ‘Online services for agents’
Faced with unstable – and equally unpopular – legacy tax and BAS agent portals, the Australian Taxation Office embarked on a massive rebuild to improve usability.
The final product was online services for agents, a cloud-based portal for agents to access ATO systems and client records and communicate with the agency on behalf of clients.
The ATO has gradually rolled out the portal, which has been built in partnership with Accenture, over the past two years, starting with a private beta in December 2017.
It officially became the ATO’s default portal in August 2019, replacing the former tax and BAS agent portals.
Since the portal was introduced, the ATO has been overwhelmed by feedback, particularly from many international revenue agencies, who consider it the new standard to beat.
It has also already resulted in cost-savings and increased efficient for both tax agents and the ATO. The self-service functionality alone is expected to save $5 million each year.

Digital Transformation Agency: ‘Govpass digital identity ecosystem’
In 2015, the government’s financial system inquiry led by David Murray found that Australia’s identity environment was immature, and contributed to higher costs and identity crime.
It highlighted that a national federated digital identity, supported by a trusted digital identity framework, should be developed to let citizens easily and securely access digital services.
Tasked with this challenge, the Digital Transformation Agency – and its predecessor, the Digital Transformation Office – has spent the last five years coming up with a solution.
After many iterations, the DTA has settled on solution that uses a ‘double-blind’ to ensure identity providers and service providers can verify identity without revealing an individual’s credentials.
Dubbed Govpass, the solution is served by a DTA-built identity exchange, which is now being operated by Services Australia, and the ATO’s new digital identity credential myGovID.
myGovID, which is a digital identity linked to a user’s iOS and Android device, works like a digital equivalent of the 100 point ID check.
It became available to citizens in June after the core infrastructure was deployed to production.
Further identity accredited digital identity credentials will also be offered by other third-parties in the future, starting with Australia Post.
As at November, more than 80,000 myGovID identities had been created.

Reserve Bank of Australia: ‘Banking technology modernisation’
The Reserve Bank of Australia has become a truly a 24×7 institution thanks to a major overhaul of its core banking system.
The central bank wrapped up the modernisation and decommissioned its legacy mainframe core banking applications in the second half of 2019.
It builds on early work to develop the Fast Settlements Service infrastructure that sits behind the New Payments Platform (NPP) that now underpins Australia’s financial system.
Together with a new cloud-based API gateway, government agencies are able to use the NPP and the new core banking system to trigger calls to initiate payments and banking services in real-time.
The RBA has delivered the program in-house, but had deliberately avoided bespoke software development.
The core banking platform, cloud-based API gateway and NPP were delivered by TCS, HCL, Mulesoft, IBM and Syntegrity Solutions.

‘Boring’ Peugeot named lead sponsor of new Sky Comedy channel- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

As part of Peugeot’s wider 2020 campaign to convince drivers its not boring, the car manufacturer is to sponsor Sky Comedy – a new TV channel that goes live from today (27 January).
Sky Comedy is Sky’s first full-time comedy station since it closed The Comedy Channel in 1992. It will broadcast shows from HBO, NBC and Showtime.
The campaign is part of a year-long deal with Sky Media, which aims to reimagine how the car manufacturer is perceived by drivers and convince them it is not a boring brand. The multi-platform partnership will cover TV, video-on-demand and Sky Go platforms.
“This year we’re dedicated to delivering our simple message that we are ‘Unboring the Future,” explained Peugeot’s marketing director, Steve Wass. “What better way to show our true selves than to partners with a brand-new fresh and relatable TV channel? This is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our brand with a new wave of excitement,” he continued.
The ‘Unboring the Future’ idents show various boring scenes, like washing machines, a lone, forgotten suitcase making its way around an airport conveyer and dull, paper orientated office jobs. Across the tedious scenes, the word ‘boring’ shoots up, before the scene changes to a cool shot of a Peugeot cruising along, to show how Peugeot is ‘unboring your TV.’
The idents will go live across TV and Sky’s video-on-demand platform. The partnership will also materialise into Peugeot 183 UK retailers, with the integration of Sky Comedy branding, merchanise and experientials.
On its partnership with Peugeot, Dan Morrisey, head of sponsorship activation at Sky Media, said: “We’re delighted to have Peugeot onboard as sponsors of Sky Comedy from launch. With the brand’s focus on “Unboring the Future”, aligning with Sky Comedy and its portfolio of critically acclaimed content makes perfect sense. From idents on screen to partnership amplification across PEUGEOT’s retail network, Sky Peugeot, Mediacom and Havas will be working in unison across 2020 to deliver a truly unboring partnership.”
The sponsorship between Sky Media and Peugeot is brokered by MediaCom, with creative execution by Havas. The digital activity will be delivered by Adylic and social artwork created by 33 Seconds.

First-ever iTnews Benchmark Awards resilience finalists named – Projects- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Two state government agencies and one of the country’s leading universities are in the running to win the inaugural iTnews prize for best cyber security project in this year’s Benchmark Awards.
After announcing finalists in the education, health, mass-market, sustainability and local government categories over the last week, we are delighted to showcase the three resilience finalists for 2020.
One of three new categories for 2020, the resilience award will be presented to the project that was best able to improve an organisation’s ability to withstand service disruptions and cyber-attacks, or reduce data exposure.
Stay tuned this week as we announce finalists in the remaining 9 categories, including finance, federal government, diversity, young leader and IoT.
We’ll also be publishing case studies on the finalists in the run up to the awards gala dinner on March 5, where we will reveal the winning projects, so keep your eyes peeled.
Drumroll please…
iTnews Benchmark Awards 2020 Resilience Finalists
Deakin University: ‘ Deakin Shield’
After several internal review exercises found a significant number of cyber security risks across the university, Deakin decided to take action.
The result was Deakin Shield, an enterprise-wide cyber security program design to mitigate the risk of compromise against the university’s data.
Through a series of sub-projects, the program has introduced a number of new technologies to counter cyber threats.
This includes multi-factor authentication for all staff to reduce the risk of compromised user credentials by asking staff to prove their identity with more than just a password.
Other new capabilities include a new virtual private network, improved email security tools such as a new ‘Phish Alert’ reporting function in outlook and new operating systems for all Deakin computers.
As a result of the changes, the amount of staff clicking on malicious emails has reduced, with phishing simulation tests helping to bring reduce this number further.
SA Water: ‘SCADA system’
When it comes to critical infrastructure, few services are more important than the supply of water.
Like other critical infrastructure such as electricity and telecommunications, control systems for water are increasingly exposed to cyber security threats.
In South Australia, the government agency in charge of providing water services to 1.7 million customers recognised this threat, and decided to overhaul its SCADA system.
The system is used by SA Water to monitor and control the assets that provide water to customers’ taps, and is used to transport and treat sewage safely.
The resilient, cost effective system now allows the agency to monitor and control its water assets in any situation, be it a state-wide power interruption or targeted cyber-attack.
Under the new SCADA system, which is a central, virtual solution in a single secure data centre,a full system rollback can occur in hours instead of days.
Victorian Electoral Commission
If there was anything that focused the minds of IT security experts working to secure the country’s voting systems in 2019, it was the state-sponsored cyber-attack against Parliament House.
While the incident, thankfully, was found not to extend to the country’s ageing voting systems, it did highlight the need to keep vigilant in a rapid changing security environment.
But it is not always a high-profile event that leads an agency to reinforce its resilience.
For the Victorian Electoral Commission, a highly-critical internal audit report highlighted a need to improve compliance with the state’s protective data security standards.
It also revealed a poor level of maturity under the Australian Signals Directorate’s Essential Eight model – now considered the baseline for cyber security.
To address the findings, the VEC partnered with Microsoft to build a platform that would rapid improve its cyber security posture, including compliance with four of the Essential Eight strategies.

The BBC is developing a voice assistant, code named ‘Beeb’ – gpgmail

The BBC — aka, the British Broadcasting Corporation, aka the Beeb, aka Auntie — is getting into the voice assistant game.

The Guardian reports the plan to launch an Alexa rival, which has been given the working title ‘Beeb’, and will apparently be light on features given the Corp’s relatively slender developer resources vs major global tech giants.

The BBC’s own news site says the digital voice assistant will launch next year without any proprietary hardware to house it. Instead the corporation is designing the software to work on “all smart speakers, TVs and mobiles”.

Why is a publicly funded broadcaster ploughing money into developing an AI when the market is replete with commercial offerings — from Amazon’s Alexa to Google’s Assistant, Apple’s Siri and Samsung’s Bixby to name a few? The intent is to “experiment with new programmes, features and experiences without someone else’s permission to build it in a certain way”, a BBC spokesperson told BBC news.

The corporation is apparently asking its own staff to contribute voice data to help train the AI to understand the country’s smorgasbord of regional accents.

“Much like we did with BBC iPlayer, we want to make sure everyone can benefit from this new technology, and bring people exciting new content, programmes and services — in a trusted, easy-to-use way,” the spokesperson added. “This marks another step in ensuring public service values can be protected in a voice-enabled future.”

While at first glance the move looks reactionary and defensive, set against the years of dev already ploughed into cutting edge commercial voice AIs, the BBC has something those tech giant rivals lack: Not just regional British accents on tap — but easy access to a massive news and entertainment archive to draw on to design voice assistants that could serve up beloved personalities as a service.

Imagine being able to summon the voice of Tom Baker, aka Doctor Who, to tell you what the (cosmic) weather’s like — or have the Dad’s Army cast of characters chip in to read out your to-do list. Or get a summary of the last episode of The Archers from a familiar Ambridge resident.

Or what about being able to instruct ‘Beeb’ to play some suitably soothing or dramatic sound effects to entertain your kids?

On one level a voice AI is just a novel delivery mechanism. The BBC looks to have spotted that — and certainly does not lack for rich audio content that could be repackaged to reach its audience on verbal command and extend its power to entertain and delight.

When it comes to rich content, the same cannot be said of the tech giants who have pioneered voice AIs.

There have been some attempts to force humor (AIs that crack bad jokes) and/or shoehorn in character — largely flat-footed. As well as some ethically dubious attempts to pass off robot voices as real. All of which is to be expected, given they’re tech companies not entertainers. Dev not media is their DNA.

The BBC is coming at the voice assistant concept from the other way round: Viewing it as a modern mouthpiece for piping out more of its programming.

So while Beeb can’t hope to compete at the same technology feature level as Alexa and all the rest, the BBC could nonetheless show the tech giants a trick or two about how to win friends and influence people.

At the very least it should give their robotic voices some much needed creative competition.

It’s just a shame the Beeb didn’t tickle us further by christening its proto AI ‘Auntie’. A crisper two syllable trigger word would be hard to utter…
