Amaysim buys OVO Mobile for up to $15.8m – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Amaysim is continuing a long trend of snapping up fellow mobile virtual network operators, this time paying up to $15.8 million for OVO Mobile’s 77,000 subscribers.
The company said in a financial filing that the integration of OVO Mobile would bring Amaysim’s total subscriber base to 1.17 million.
It has been on a long path of consolidation, targeting mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) whose services run on the Optus network, the same as Amaysim.
Its acquisition trail includes Vaya (140,000 subscribers) in June 2016, Jeenee Mobile (41,700 subscribers) late last year, and now OVO Mobile (77,000 subscribers) in June 2020.
Amaysim said it would migrate OVO subscribers onto its own network supply agreement with Optus, a process which is expected to take a bit less than four months.
The company said it expected OVO to “be earnings accretive in FY2021, with an increased earnings contribution in FY2022 and beyond”.
“The acquisition of OVO Mobile’s subscribers is further evidence of the execution of our strategic initiative to grow the recurring mobile subscriber base, both organically and through bolt-on acquisitions,” Amaysim’s CEO Peter O’Connell said.
“Under our asset-light operating structure, we are able to scale the subscriber base with no, or nominal, additional resources, delivering positive future earnings from the acquired base.
“Having completed the integration of Jeenee Mobile in less than three months, we have the skills and experience to accomplish an efficient and successful migration and we look forward to welcoming OVO customers to the Amaysim family.”

5 Essential Mobile Apps for Moms | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Being a mother has to be one of the most exciting but also demanding experiences life can provide. One moment your heart is swelling with thoughts of all the wonderful memories you will create with your little one – then suddenly, you are worrying about how you are going to juggle it all: the sleepless nights, the rocking to bed, the learning and unlearning.
Luckily, mobile apps have been a silver lining when it comes to handling motherhood. These five essential apps will no doubt bring convenience and laughter into your life:
1. Lullaby Songs for Babies
Sometimes rocking and singing your child to sleep can be exhausting. Conveniently, Lullaby Songs for Babies puts your vocal cords to rest for a few moments. The application has multiple lullabies available, which are categorised into certain themes such as Traditional Lullabies, Nature Sounds, Animal Sounds and Classical Music.

The best part? You are able to set a timer that is suitable for your little one’s sleep rhythms.
2. Kinedu
Keeping track of your child’s milestones can be tough. That’s why Kinedu gives you the opportunity to diarise the development of your child through physical, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional activities depending on their age (ages ranging from 0 to 4). As your child progresses, different milestones are available to show what your ‘mini-me’ has accomplished.
Furthermore, if you wish to share this journey with someone you can always add your nanny, partner and family to your account so that they can follow your baby’s development.
3. ScreenGuide
Once your kids know how to walk and talk, the world is their oyster. They can now easily find their way into your jewellery box, smear themselves with your lotions or make a canvas out of your wall. Therefore, introducing them to different forms of entertainment is a must.
Products such as tablets are a popular way of keeping kids out of trouble these days. Unfortunately, solving one problem can make new ones arise – such as monitoring what your children view online.
ScreenGuide controls your kid’s screen time using powerful parental controls like setting up daily screen times; blocking certain apps, websites or features; as well as allowing you to completely lock the device from wherever you are.
4. What’s For Dinner
When juggling your children, career and household – the last thing on you want to spend your time thinking about is a creative and nutritious meal. The What’s For Dinner app makes deciding on delicious and healthy food really simple thanks to its helpful resources and snack ideas.
The app also has an integrated grocery list that can be automatically prepared once you’ve decided on your family’s meals – this means that you’ll be sure to get everything you need.
5. Photo Collage Maker
When you bring a new being into the world, you’ll want to photograph every single moment of their journey. Editing apps like Photo Collage Maker give you the opportunity to make your memories sparkle (literally).
This app provides tools such as filters, screen effects, stickers and fonts to give your pictures extra personality. The app is completely free and is easily sharable to different social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and more.

Mobile telecom industry making rapid progress toward 5G: Survey- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Mobile service providers say they are making substantial progress toward ushering in a new generation of 5G Networks that will enable ultra-high-speed mobile connectivity and a wide variety of new applications and smart infrastructure use cases. Progress includes steady work toward virtualizing core network functions and a reexamination of the security investments they will need to protect their networks and customers.
COVID-19 is not expected to significantly delay 5G deployments, according to a new global study report, “Toward a More Secure 5G World,” developed by the Business Performance Innovation (BPI) Network, in partnership with A10 Networks. The percentage of mobile service providers who say their companies are “moving rapidly toward commercial deployment” has increased significantly in the past year, climbing from 26 percent in a survey announced in early 2019 to 45 percent in the new survey. Virtually all respondents say improved security is a critical network requirement and top concern in the 5G era.
Early 5G networks are being designed in accordance with the already-approved non-standalone 5G standard. However, 30 percent of respondents say they are already proactively planning to add standalone 5G, and another 9 percent say their companies will move directly to standalone. Standalone 5G will require a whole new network core utilizing a cloud-native, virtualized, service-based architecture. Many respondents, in fact, say they are making significant progress toward network virtualization.
“Our latest study indicates that major mobile carriers around the world are on track with their 5G plans, and more expect to begin commercial build-outs in the coming months,” said Dave Murray, director of thought leadership with the BPI Network. “While COVID-19 may result in some short-term delays for operators, the pandemic ultimately demonstrates a global need for higher speed, higher capacity 5G networks and the applications and use case they enable.”
“Mobile operators globally need to proactively prepare for the demands of a new virtualized and secure 5G world,” said Gunter Reiss, worldwide vice president of A10 Networks, a provider of secure application services for mobile operators worldwide. “That means boosting security at key protection points like the mobile edge, deploying a cloud-native infrastructure, consolidating network functions, leveraging new CI/CD integrations and DevOps automation tools, and moving to an agile and hyperscale service-based architecture as much as possible. All of these improvements will pay dividends immediately with existing networks and move carriers closer to their ultimate goals for broader 5G adoption and the roll-out of new and innovative ultra-reliable low-latency use cases.”

YouTube’s ‘Chapters’ Roll out on Desktop and Mobile | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Speechling.

YouTube has released its new video chapters feature to all users on desktop, smartphones and tablets. Chapters, the new feature that soft-launched in April, will make it easier to skip to precisely where you want to go in a video, similar to the chapters in a book, or scenes in a movie. Though not to the most ground-breaking or exciting new feature to land on YouTube, they are a welcome, if not overdue quality-of-life feature that will no doubt make the experience easier for many users.
On desktop, a video with chapters won’t look different from how videos have always looked. The biggest change is barely noticeable: the red bar used to show video progress will have breaks within it, showing the different chapters, the breaks indicate when the chapters begin and end.
Breaks in red scrobble line indicate chapter beginnings and ends.
The same design applies to how chapters work on the phone and tablet app for Android and iOS. Though, on phones, YouTube had to account for the simple fact that your finger might get in the way of you seeing where the chapters are. To solve for that, YouTube’s phone app will trigger a haptic buzz when you’ve arrived at the next chapter.
On tablets or any other mobile devices where haptic feedback isn’t available, the video progress bar will automatically snap to the beginning of a new chapter when you lift your finger off the screen.

If a user is looking for a specific time marker while you scrub through the video, keep your finger on the screen, then move it below the progress bar without letting up to clearly see the time marker.
There are no limits to how many chapters can be placed on a specific video, but not all videos have chapters automatically applied to them. Getting chapters on any other video relies on making sure there are some timestamps in the video description, the same workaround that creators have been utilizing for years to make their videos easier to navigate.
From April, listeners to music on YouTube may have already noticed the chapters feature. Videos that feature full-albums will have chapters for each song. Even unofficial mixes have featured chapters for specific songs.
For those who like to use their keyboard to skip forward in videos, YouTube told The Verge that it is working on a new set of keyboard shortcuts to make skipping between chapters easier for power users, though it won’t be ready for launch.
YouTube also says that it’s exploring bringing gestures to navigate between chapters to mobile, given that portable displays come in so many different shapes and sizes, though those won’t be available at launch either.

5G fires: Australian mobile companies work with police to prevent arson attacks | 5G – Blog – 10 minute

Australian mobile companies are seeking to head off any outbreak of anti-5G arson attacks on telecommunications infrastructure, stating they are working with police to keep an eye out for potential incidents.
Victoria police announced on Friday an investigation had commenced into a fire at a telecommunications tower at Cranbourne West in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
Police were assessing whether the fire was suspicious. As of Tuesday, Victoria police told Guardian Australia the investigation was still ongoing and the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
It followed another suspicious fire at a telecommunications tower in Morphett Vale in South Australia earlier this month, and an incident in Kyabram in northern Victoria where two Chinese flags and a Nazi flag with “#Covid19” were tied to a telecommunications tower.
More than a dozen towers in New Zealand have been vandalised since the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, and more than 20 towers have been vandalised in the UK, also believed to be connected to Covid-19 conspiracy theories connected to 5G.
In response to potential vandalism in Australia similar to that seen in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, the communications minister, Paul Fletcher, last week issued a statement reminding the public that spreading misinformation about 5G is dangerous, and attacking mobile towers is a crime.
“Interfering or tampering with telecommunications facilities is a criminal offence,” Fletcher said. “The Australian government will not tolerate any vandalism of communications infrastructure and I urge Australians to report any suspicious activity to their local police.
“Causing damage to mobile phone networks can cut vital connectivity, risking serious harm, even death, if a person is unable to contact Triple Zero.”
About 70% of all calls to Triple Zero happen via mobile phones and telcos have indicated one major concern about tower vandalism is if a tower is taken offline and people can’t make a phone call in an emergency.
The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association chief executive, Chris Althaus, told Guardian Australia that the mobile companies were not going to let the small minority of people who are spreading misinformation about 5G do enough damage to result in more towers being under threat.
“We’re not going to sit back. No one is going to cop it,” he said. “Frankly it’s disgusting to have the use of this genuine health pandemic for furthering an agenda against a technology that has proven to be safe.”
Althaus said telecommunications companies were partnering with law enforcement in the states and territories to keep on high alert for potential vandalism of telecommunications equipment in response to misinformation about 5G.
“This is critical infrastructure,” he said.
Anti-5G sentiment in Australia, fuelled by misinformation spread on social networks such as Facebook, has “shaken community confidence” in the technology before the vast majority of the public has even used a 5G-enabled device, a parliamentary committee reported earlier this month.
The federal government is spending $9m on an advertising campaign aimed at correcting misinformation.
Facebook has banned content linking coronavirus to 5G directly, and posts encouraging vandalism of telecommunications towers.
However, in many of the anti-5G groups, while posts may not directly link 5G to coronavirus, many have expressed concern that 5G services have been installed while the country is in tight Covid-19 restrictions – unaware or ignoring the fact that telecommunications companies plan their network construction months and years in advance.
One of the biggest groups, which has just under 50,000 members, Australians for Safer Technology, recently changed its name from “Stop 5G Australia” in a move to prevent it being deleted by Facebook as some have been in the UK. The group also has rules about not linking to content connecting 5G to coronavirus, and posts condoning violence or vandalism of 5G equipment.
One of the groups that participated in anti-lockdown and anti-5G protests in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this month have planned another national protest this weekend, however they have not been setting up events on Facebook because Facebook has had a policy of deleting events that encourage people to breach public health restrictions.

Mobile Connectivity: Staying Flexible is Key During Uncertain Times | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

As many companies in South Africa scramble to keep their employees working from home, the reality of connectivity costs, control and flexibility is becoming more important than ever.
In the traditional office environment, managing connectivity and data use was not such a serious issue for IT managers, as data costs were essentially a part of overall fixed network infrastructure.
Now, with many employees being forced to work from home, using mobile data where home fibre connectivity is not available has become costly and difficult to manage. Mobile data use has shot up while trying to keep employees connected and productive.
Furthermore, many traditional mobile connectivity options such as corporate APN’s are not ideal for certain uses due to high data costs, not having SIM-level control (bill shock risk) and requiring long term and inflexible commitments.

During the uncertain times that we live in, staying flexible is key. It is very hard to make long-term commitments as future mobile data use across an organisation is extremely hard to predict.
Companies need to be able to scale up and scale down fast as the environment changes. Staying flexible with regards to mobile network choice, SIM types and data spend commitments is key.
The online SIMcontrol platform from Flickswtch gives organisations a management and control layer for data SIMs from all major mobile networks. SIMcontrol’s self-help platform automates the management of prepaid, top-up, managed APN and global roaming SIMs at scale.
For ultimate flexibility, the unique Business Prepaid service allows companies to automate the management and loading of prepaid data SIMs across all major networks. With no long-term commitments, these SIMs can be scaled up and down as needed, with complete control over mobile data spend.
It also allows for easy one-click recharges to prepaid and “Top-Up” data contracts from all mobile networks. Many companies have rolled out these promotional data deals as part of their work from home connectivity, but are now struggling to manage the SIMs properly at scale.
Getting on top of mobile data spend while staying flexible and not locking in long-term spend will be important for companies in the months ahead.
The Flickswitch team, being network agnostic and with over 10 years of business SIM management experience, can offer independent advice on different mobile connectivity options.

5 Ways to Protect Your Business from Mobile Adware | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

One of the most common forms of cyberthreats designed to collect personal information from a user’s device is mobile adware. This is because roughly 4 billion people are connected to the Internet via their smartphone.
Despite the adoption of mobile devices, companies rarely prioritize mobile security. Check Point’s Cyber Security Report 2020 shows that in 2019, 27% of companies suffered a cyber-attack because the security of a mobile device was breached.
“It only takes one compromised mobile device for cybercriminals to steal confidential information and access an organization’s corporate network,” explains Pankaj Bhula, Regional Director for Africa at Check Point.
The main problem with adware is pinpointing how a phone became infected. Adware is developed to sneak onto a device undetected without uninstallation procedures. Removing this type of virus can be extremely difficult and the information it collects, such as a devices operating system, location, images, etc., can be a high-security risk.
Adware is commonly distributed through mobile apps. According to Statista, there are 2.5 million apps available to Android and Google Play users and there are 1.8 million apps available on the Apple Store. These figures demonstrate the wide scope of this kind of attack, giving a clear indication as to why cyber-criminals focus on mobile devices.
Here are five ways to ensure that you and your business are protected from mobile adware:

Only download apps from official Google Play or App stores. Pay attention to the number of downloads and reviews by other users.
Check whether the functions the app asks you to access are necessary. For example, if a flashlight app asks for access to your contacts, it is a red flag.
Avoid allowing the app to function in the background (unless it seems completely necessary).
Update your device and the application to the latest version, with all necessary security patches available.
Utilize security tools to help you protect your device as cybercriminals can attack both Android and iOS users.

Regulator asks for Credit Suisse directors’ mobile data – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Swiss regulators have requested electronic messaging data from the mobile phones of several Credit Suisse managers and supervisory board directors as part of a probe into spying at the bank, three people familiar with the matter said.
Switzerland’s markets watchdog FINMA is examining the culture and governance at one of Europe’s largest banks and whether management control failures allowed spying on former executive board members Iqbal Khan and Peter Goerke, the sources told Reuters.
The sources did not identify which managers and board directors FINMA was seeking the mobile phone data for. FINMA declined to comment.
Credit Suisse has been under investigation after revelations in September that it had hired a private investigator to spy on Khan, its former international wealth management head, and Goerke, which eventually led to the ousting of CEO Tidjane Thiam in February.
Credit Suisse was trying to establish whether Khan was seeking to take clients with him in his move to rival bank UBS. The bank later apologised to Khan, saying no evidence was found. Reuters could not determine why Credit Suisse had spied on Goerke.
Thiam, who has long said he was not aware of the activity, could not be reached for comment. Khan declined to comment, while Goerke could not be reached for comment.
As part of the broader investigation, FINMA is examining whether people used encrypted messaging apps to hide some discussions, another person with knowledge of the inquiry told Reuters.
“What they are more focused on now is who knew what, when, and who should have known,” said the person.
Homburger, a Swiss law firm that investigated the affair for Credit Suisse last year, said at a press conference in October that it had been inhibited by the deletion of messages sent on an encrypted communication app Threema, used by the company’s then chief operations officer, Pierre-Olivier Bouee, and security personnel.
Credit Suisse has publicly blamed Bouee for organising what it described as a rogue spying operation in which all executives and directors, including Thiam, were kept in the dark.
“Credit Suisse made public statements on the observation matter on several occasions this year and last year and informed the public of the results of internal and external investigations,” a bank spokesman said in a statement to Reuters.
“Due to the ongoing review by the investigating auditor appointed by Finma, with whom Credit Suisse has been cooperating since the beginning, we are not commenting further on the matter at this time,” the statement said.
Bouee, who has not spoken publicly about the affair, could not be reached for comment.
Urs Rohner, the chairman of Credit Suisse, had used Threema, two people familiar with the matter said. One added that Rohner had used it for personal use only.
“The Chairman has never used Threema in a business context,” a spokesman for Credit Suisse said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Monday.
FINMA has not accused anyone of wrongdoing as it continues to investigate. The Swiss watchdog’s rules allow it to take action against individuals if it finds that a bank broke its own internal communication rules or if it strayed from its usual framework for recording management decisions.
Credit Suisse declined to comment on its policy on employees using messaging apps, which Reuters was unable to independently review.
