Opera Launches Data-Saving Opera Mini Update | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Popular web browser Opera has announced the launch of Opera Mini 50 – the latest update which introduces a fully revamped user interface as well as a new data-savings widget so data consumption can be seen at a glance.
The Opera Mini 50 update enhances the browser’s fast and powerful capabilities – making it even easier for users to navigate unique features such as data compression, the download manager with offline file-sharing and the built-in ad-blocker.

In the biggest upgrade in five years, Opera Mini 50 is integrating a new and versatile status bar at the top of the browser screen. The new status bar adds a touch of personalisation – one where users can receive welcome messages, greetings and hints throughout the day while browsing.
The status bar also keeps users updated on what’s going on around them. It shows notifications with the latest news, available browser updates and events from partners.
“With Opera Mini 50, we are reinforcing the connection between users and the features that they love,” says Andrzej Czarnecki, Product Manager for Opera Mini. “We’ve introduced new styles, themes, and user interactions to improve access to the features users need within superior aesthetics.”
Data savings have always been important for Opera Mini users. In Opera Mini 50, the new status bar displays a data savings widget that allows users to view their data consumption at a glance.
“We know that data compression in Opera Mini is widely used among our users. That’s why our designers have introduced the new data-savings widget, on the status bar, to provide detailed information about users’ data consumption. It tells them what they need to know about how much data they are saving without navigating through the settings of the browser,” adds Czarnecki.
Easier access to offline file sharing
Opera Mini is currently the only browser that allows its users to also share files without using mobile data. With its offline file sharing, users can transfer images, videos, and audio files to nearby devices at high speeds using a safe and direct WiFi connection.
The freshly added offline file-sharing feature works with the popular download manager in Opera Mini. By combining these features, Opera Mini makes it easier for users to share files they have already downloaded from the web on their phones, without the need to navigate through their phone’s drive.
In Opera Mini 50, offline file sharing is easily accessed through a shortcut on the new navigation bar at the bottom of the browser screen.
Opera partners with African music sharing platform
Last year, Opera Mini partnered with Mdundo, a music sharing platform with the largest catalogue of independent artists across Africa. Through this partnership, Opera integrates Mdundo’s music catalogue into Opera Mini 50, providing users with free access to the music they love through their browser.
“Every time users listen to music using Opera Mini and Mdundo, they are supporting local and independent African artists, helping them to increase their chances of being discovered by more people, generate more streams and downloads, and motivate them to keep producing popular hit songs,” says Czarnecki
With Opera Mini and Mdundo, users can choose between streaming or downloading their favourite songs and, thanks to the hybrid advertising model of Mdundo, all music downloads are free.

PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini review – cult retro cartridge system returns | Games – Blog – 10 minute

Originally released by the Japanese consumer electronics giant NEC in 1987, the PC Engine was the cartridge-based system for hardcore gamers. Designed to compete against the Nintendo Famicom, the machine was an innovative joint venture with veteran developer Hudson Soft, boasting a 16-bit graphics processor and arguably the best sound chip of the era. Released much later in the US as the TurboGrafx-16, and later still in the UK with the catchy name PC Engine CoreGrafx, it never gained the momentum needed to challenge Sega or Nintendo, but its output of faithful arcade conversions and brilliant scrolling shooters ensured its cult appeal.
So now, following the success of the SNES Classic Mini and Mega Drive Mini retro consoles, we have the PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini. It’s a smaller-sized reproduction of the 30-year-old console, with more than 50 built-in games and a USB controller designed to resemble the original PC Engine joypad – including its two-phase autofire buttons, to save your fingers from RSI during prolonged shooter sessions. As with the Sega and Nintendo mini consoles, it comes with a USB power lead and an HDMI cable, and in the settings you can switch between an array of display options, from faithful 4:3 renderings to a stretched widescreen mode. There’s also an effective CRT filter so you can give each game that classic scan line look.

The unit is a pretty faithful reproduction of the Japanese system, down to the weird two-pronged chassis and the plastic lock that held the unique game carts (or HuCards, as they were known) in place. It feels a little cheaper than the Nintendo and Sega minis though, especially as you have to completely remove the rear plastic panel to connect the power and HDMI cables, which will make it very easy to lose. The PC Engine offers two joypad ports on the front, but sadly you only get one in the box. (There’s also a multitap peripheral sold separately, so you can engage in four-player sessions with Super Bomberman or Dungeon Explorer.)
Games-wise, this is a really decent collection, skilfully emulated by Japanese developer M2, a specialist in retro conversions, having previously worked on the excellent Sega Ages collections and many titles on the Nintendo Virtual Console. It’s been wonderful to rediscover true pixel art classics such as Parasol Stars, Air Zonk and the scrolling fantasy adventure Cadash, all looking crisp and colourful on a large HD display. The library is split into two Japanese titles and western releases, and while it’s great to have the former, some of the them are impossible to play unless you can read Japanese (or are prepared to go online and hunt down fan translations). Hideo Kojima fans hoping to experience his cyberpunk classic Snatcher may find themselves particularly frustrated.

But there is still so much to enjoy. Scrolling shooters such as arcade classics R-Type, and Salamander, and luscious Hudson original Soldier Blade, with its beautiful firing patterns and multi-stage enemies, really get to the heart of the machine’s appeal. Then there are memorable scrolling adventures such as horror romp Splatterhouse, martial arts epic Ninja Spirit, and Dracula-X: Rondo of Blood, one of the best titles in the Castlevania series. There are several old-school RPGs too, the highlight being Ys Books 1 & 2, which should be considered alongside Phantasy Star, Mother and Secret of Mana in the pantheon of 2D role-playing greats.
Super Bomberman fans will find three versions of the game, which is perhaps overkill, but as it’s one of the best local multiplayer franchises of all time, we’ll allow it. Military Madness is a fine early real-time strategy game in the style of Advance Wars. I’ve loved discovering the oddities too. The bizarre detective platformer JJ and Jeff, the croquet-alike sports title Appare! Gateball and fighting game The Kung Fu, with its huge sprites, are all worth five minutes of your time.

There are naturally some disappointing omissions: no Street Fighter II, no Gekisha Boy, no Magical Chase. At £100, it’s also £30 more than the retail prices of the SNES and Mega Drive Mini consoles.
However, the PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini covers all the basics and really conveys the spirit of this cult machine. NEC’s console and its CD-based successors represent a fascinating transitional period between 1980s arcade game design and the cinematic aspirations of the modern console era – and this miniaturised replica captures that. There will always be people who insist you should just download an emulator on your PC then hunt around online for game ROMs, but that process is legally and morally dubious – and can be complicated and time-consuming. This neat little gadget gives you excellent translations of the console’s best titles and lets you enjoy them on your living-room TV. For that convenience, plenty of old-school fans and curious newcomers will be happy to pay.

TurboGrafx-16 mini delayed until further notice due to coronavirus – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Retro gamers eager to add the TurboGrafx-16 mini to their collection of miniature console remakes will have to put those plans on hold thanks to the coronavirus.
Konami on Friday said that its manufacturing and shipping facilities in China have encountered an “unavoidable suspension” due to the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19. As a result, all TurboGrafx-16 mini (called the PC Engine Core Grafx mini in Japan) products that were originally scheduled to ship on March 19, 2020, have been delayed until further notice.
Could this be a sign of things to come in the gaming industry? It’s quite possible.

As GamesIndustry.biz questioned not all that long ago, what will happen to the planned launches of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later this year if the coronavirus situation isn’t resolved by then or worse, escalates?
There’s still a lot of time between now and the end of the year but one must consider everything that needs to be in place in the supply chain ahead of time to support big launches like Sony and Microsoft have planned. It’s a tricky situation indeed and one that highlights just how crucial China is to global manufacturing efforts.
Konami said it is investing all of its efforts into delivering the system as soon as possible and will provide an update on delivery timing once the details have been solidified.

Ads We Like: Mini USA uses analog tech to capture a storybook feel- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Mini USA is using creative tools of the past to highlight the story behind its brand. ‘The Inner Drive’ tells the story of how the first Mini was introduced to the world in a new interactive way.
More than 60 years ago, Englishman Alec Issigonis presented a new idea to the world – a small, space-efficient, fuel-efficient car that sparked a revolution in automotive. What started as an innovative idea on paper ultimately made the world rethink what it means to drive, while celebrating the power of small things.
The campaign uses a combination of artistic illustration, light and shadow, all captured in live action. Together the elements tell the story of how the first Mini came to be.
Created in collaboration with advertising agency 360i, Italian artist Virgilio Villoresi and illustrator Virginia Mori, ‘The Inner Drive’ centers around a 70-second film that unfolds within a handmade storybook.
The crafted short tells the story of Alec’s creative journey – from the moment he came up with his ground-breaking idea through the manufacturing process and the presentation of the first car to reporters. The effect is one of magic and light in storytelling.
A making of video shows how the artists played with light and paper to bring the action to life.
“The Mini brand has always embraced a creative spirit through forward-thinking ideas since the inception of the first car in 1959,” said Steve Ambeau, head of marketing and brand communications for Mini USA.
“‘The Inner Drive’ campaign allows people to connect with the inspiration and drive required to bring revolutionary ideas to life. Through the brilliance of a small, well-crafted story, this campaign celebrates the infectious spirit of Mini – a car built for everyone who loves to drive.”
‘The Inner Drive’ was designed and shot over several days in Milan, Italy. Various versions of the film, along with hand-illustrated posters featuring quotes from Issigonis, will be showcased across social and online properties, as well as in cinema.
This campaign is part of a broader redevelopment of Mini USA’s ‘For the Drive’ brand platform.

Why Victoria built a Mini Melbourne in Minecraft – Projects- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Department of Education and Training Victoria has become the largest provider of Minecraft: Education Edition in the world in its bid to provide new ways for students to explore the world while engaging with technology.
The project kicked off when Rail Projects Victoria partnered with the DET to create a digital copy of the state’s capital in the popular game to help educate Victorians about the Metro Tunnel Project and construction taking place beneath Melbourne.
It was also seen as an opportunity to create a learning module about the archaeological work being undertaken as part of the development.
Digital learning coach at DET, Stephen Elford, led the development of Mini Melbourne and believes it may quadruple in size from the 600,000 square metres of the city already mapped out in Minecraft.
The Department has made the platform available to its 1,600 public schools and 600,000 students, and it’s also available to the general public for through the Java, Bedrock and Education editions of the game.
Elford said the platform is readily adapted into a number of curricula for different age groups, with more content being added constantly by students, teachers and the general public.
“It changes the way you look at what learning is, what assessment is,” he said.
“The curriculum stays the same – but Minecraft: Education Edition gives you the opportunity to teach students in a different way and for students to demonstrate learning in a way we haven’t been able to before. It really does shift classrooms in an astonishing way.
This project has been named a finalist in the Education category of the iTnews Benchmark Awards for 2020.

Google Nest Mini review: better bass and recycled plastic | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

The second generation of Google’s smallest smart speaker gets a new name, more eco-friendly, a little smarter and more bass.
The £49 Nest Mini replaces the Google Home Mini as part of a revamped and renamed line of Google smart home products under the Nest brand, pushing its predecessor to a clearance price of only £19.
From the outside you would be hard pushed to see what has changed. The Nest Mini sticks with the same pincushion design with a fabric top and nonslip rubber pad on the bottom.
The top contains three far-field microphones and is touch sensitive. If music is playing, approaching the top with a hand lights up the LEDs to show you the volume and where to tap using ultrasound presence sensing.

The hidden LEDs light up as you approach the top of the Nest Mini with your hand while music is playing. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
Tapping on the left or right edge adjusts the volume, while tapping on the four central LEDs pauses or plays the music.
There is a mic mute switch on the bottom as well as a new hole for mounting the Nest Mini on a wall.
Specifications

Dimensions: 98mm x 42mm

Weight: 181g

Connectivity: Wifi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, Chromecast

Speakers: one 40mm driver

The body is made from 35% post-consumer recycled plastic and the top from 100% recycled plastic bottles, which is a step in the right direction.
The Nest Mini also has a new faster machine learning chip built into it, which is part of Google’s push to do more natural language processing locally for better speed and privacy. It also has a new wake word engine, which is designed to prevent accidental activation of Google Assistant while still enabling it to hear you from across the room.
I certainly noticed a reduction of accidental activations in a similar to that of the recently launched Google Nest Hub Max smart display. The less smart speakers are activated the less chance that they inadvertently capture speech you’d rather they didn’t.
Improved sound

A more rounded sound makes the Nest Mini a surprisingly pleasing listen, even if it cannot quite fill a room. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
Google has also upgraded the speaker, which it says produces twice as powerful bass. It certainly has a bit more punch in the low end and a more rounded sound than the Home Mini.
Vocals are clear, Google Assistant sounds great and details only start to get lost a little bit at maximum volume.
It is still a small speaker and cannot quite produce real, room-filling sound but it is pretty good for what it is – I enjoyed listening to it more than I anticipated.
Google Assistant natively supports music playback from Spotify, YouTube Music, Google Play Music, Deezer, BBC and other radio stations in the UK. You can also either Chromecast to the Nest Mini or use it as a Bluetooth speaker, both of which worked well from Android devices and iPhones.
Google Assistant

The Nest Mini listens out for its ‘Hey Google’ or ‘OK Google’ hotwords unless you flick the mic mute switch in its side. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
Google’s voice assistant continues to lead the pack in terms of natural language understanding and capability.
Teach it your voice and it can distinguish between users, giving personalised results pulling from information in your Google account such as your calendar.
It will answer most questions, set timers and everything else you would expect from a voice assistant in 2020, including controlling most common smart home devices such as lights.
Google recently rolled out a male voice for Assistant in the UK, allowing users to switch it over from the default female voice on a per-account basis. The UK still lags behind the US, however, in its choice of voices.
Price
The Google Nest Mini costs £49 and is available in four colours: chalk, charcoal, coral and sky. It is also frequently discounted to £34 or less.
For comparison, the Google Home Mini costs £19, the Google Home costs £49, Google Home Max costs £199, the Nest Hub costs £119, the Nest Hub Max costs £199 and Amazon’s Echo Dot costs £24.
Verdict
The Google Nest Mini is a future-proofing update rather than a radical change. Sure, it sounds a little better, the controls are improved and the wall-mount is nice.
But it is the improved machine learning chip within it that is the real upgrade – and one that is likely to be of larger benefit as we shift more and more of processing of our voices to local devices rather than Google’s servers. It is faster and better for privacy.
So the Nest Mini continues to be an excellent little smart speaker that gives the dominant Amazon Echo Dot a very good run for its money.
Just do not buy it at full price, given it is likely to be frequently and heavily discounted as with its predecessor.

Pros: good sound for the money, wall mount, made of recycled plastic, Google Assistant, Bluetooth 5.0, native BBC radio playback
Cons: No 3.5mm input, privacy concerns of a smart speaker, not quite room-filling sound

The rubberised bottom stops the Nest Mini slipping around on surfaces or there is a mounting hole for attaching it to a wall. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian

It Looks Like Sega Nailed the Genesis Mini

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Nintendo hit on a winning formula when it launched the NES Classic in 2016. Gamers clamored to get their hands on this plug-and-play gateway to gaming history. The SNES Classic followed, and then Sony tried its hand at mini consoles with the disappointing Playstation Classic. Sega’s effort has taken longer, but it’s almost ready for release, and it’s shaping up better than the PlayStation. Early reviews are universally positive — perhaps even more so than they were for the NES Classic.SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce

The Genesis Mini, known as the Mega Drive Mini outside the US, uses the familiar mini console formula. It looks like a shrunken-down version of the 90s hardware. Instead of plugging game cartridges into the Genesis Mini, it has 42 classic games preloaded on the internal storage. That’s twice as many included games as other miniature game consoles. It also comes with two retro-style Sega controllers (the three-button version), so you can do multiplayer without any additional purchases.

This is not the first retro Sega console. In fact, there have been many attempts to capitalize on the Genesis game library over the years, probably because Sega dropped out of the console market nearly 20 years ago. These devices usually suffered from a mediocre game selection, poor emulation performance, or both. The Genesis Mini software comes from a developer called M2, which specializes in emulation. The results, by all accounts, are superb. Playing on the Genesis Mini feels like playing games on the original hardware. It connects to your TV via HDMI, and you can choose between original 4:3 and 16:9 ratios. There’s even the option to add in CRT-style scanlines.

Sega didn’t skimp on the game selection for the Genesis Mini. It’s got all the hits, as well as some lesser-known classics. There’s Sonic the Hedgehog, of course, but also Golden Axe, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Altered Beast, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Streets of Rage 2, Earthworm Jim, and many more. It even includes Darius and Tetris, two games that never launched on the Genesis in the US. That’s not as cool as the unreleased Star Fox 2 debuting on the SNES Classic, but it’s still a nice bonus.

The Sega Genesis Mini is available for pre-order via Amazon, Best Buy, and more. It launches on September 19th. It’ll run you $79.99, the same price as the NES Classic at launch. There’s an officially licensed 6-button version of the controller also available for another $20.

Analogue’s Mega Sg is the Sega Genesis Mini alternative for the discerning retro gaming fan – gpgmail

The official Sega Genesis Mini is coming in September and hopes to capitalize on some of the retro gaming hype that turned the Super Nintendo and NES Mini Classic editions into best-sellers. But there’s already a modern piece of hardware out there capable of playing Sega Genesis games on your HDTV — plus Mega Drive, Master System and Sega CD, too.

The Analogue Mega Sg is the third in a series of reference-quality, FPGA-based retro consoles from Analogue, a company that prides itself on accuracy in old-school gaming. It provides unparalleled, non-emulated gameplay with zero lag and full 1080p output to work with your HD or even 4K TV in a way no other old-school gaming hardware can.

For $189.99 (which is just about double the asking price of the Sega Genesis Mini), you get the console itself, an included Master System cartridge adapter, an HDMI cable and a USB cable for power supply (plus a USB plug, though, depending on your TV, you might be able to power it directly). The package also includes a silicon pad should you want to use it with original Sega CD hardware, which plugs into the bottom of the SG hardware just like it did with the original Genesis. It includes two ports that support original wired Genesis controllers, or you can also opt to pick up an 8bitdo M30 wireless Genesis controller and adapter, which retails for $24.99.

Like the Nt mini did for NES, and the Super Nt did for SNES before it, the Mega Sg really delivers when it comes to performance. Games look amazing on my 4K LG OLED television, and I can choose from a variety of video output settings to tune it to my liking, including adding simulated retro scaliness and more to make it look more like your memory of playing on an old CRT television.

Sound is likewise excellent — those opening notes of Ecco the Dolphin sounded fantastic rendered in 48KHz 16-bit stereo coming out of my Sonos sound system. Likewise, Sonic’s weird buzzsaw razor whine came through exactly as remembered, but definitely in higher definition than anything that actually played out of my old TV speakers as a kid.

Even if you don’t have a pile of original Sega cartridges sitting around ready to play (though I bet you do if you’re interested in this piece of kit), the Mega Sg has something to offer: On board, you get a digital copy of the unreleased Sega Genesis game “Hardcore,” which was nearly complete in 1994 but which went unreleased. It’s been finished and renamed “Ultracore,” and you can run it from the console’s main menu as soon as you plug it in and fire it up.

Analogue plans to add more capabilities to the Mega Sg in the future, with cartridge adapters that will allow it to run Mark III, Game Gear, Sega MyCard, SG-1000 and SC-3000 games, too. These will all be supported by the FPGA Analogue designed for the Mega Sg, too, so they’ll also be running natively, not emulated, for a true recreation of the original gaming experience.

If you’re really into classic games, and care a lot about accuracy, this is definitely the best way to play Sega games on modern TVs — and it’s also just super fun.
