Tesla has overhauled Japanese rival Toyota to become the world’s most valuable automotive company.
Despite never having made a profit, the billionaire Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturer has been tipped by some pundits to achieve a valuation of more than $1tn (£800bn) as demand for electric vehicles soars.
Shares in Tesla climbed by more than 4% during Wednesday to more than $1,100 apiece, giving the company a valuation of $209bn, ahead of Toyota on $205bn. The increase means Tesla has now outstripped Toyota on the stock market, even factoring in differences in the way that companies are valued in the US and Japan.
Tesla’s performance is all the more remarkable given that it has never made a profit, but analysts have pointed to the company’s prospects as a market leader in battery-powered vehicle technology.
Analysts at the stockbroker Jefferies said the coronavirus pandemic could accelerate the speed at which the world adopts cleaner fuels.
“We see Covid-19 as an accelerator of the transition to EVs [electric vehicles] and renewables, from consumers and public policy,” they said.
“Tesla remains significantly ahead of peers in product range, capacity and technology.”
Excitement has also been building around a so-called “million mile” battery lasting up to 16 years, which Tesla’s Chinese supplier Catl has been working on and which is predicted to lower the cost of electric vehicles.
The rise in Tesla’s share price is doubly good news for Musk, who enjoys a controversial pay arrangement linked to the company’s stock market performance that could theoretically hand him a $55bn bonus.
Under the scheme corporate governance experts have described as “staggering”, Musk must build Tesla into a $650bn company over the next 10 years, meaning the company’s share price will have to more than treble from Wednesday’s price of $209bn.

Pirc, an influential adviser to shareholders, including the UK’s local authority pension funds, said this week that investors should vote against Tesla’s executive pay deal because it “unfairly enriches the chief executive”.
Ahead of Wednesday’s symbolic moment, Tesla appeared to have eclipsed Toyota earlier this month, according to the way that Wall Street values listed businesses.
Posts on Twitter in mid-June praised the company for reaching a stock market valuation of $184bn on the Nasdaq exchange, ahead of Toyota on $179bn, drawing approval from Musk via his own account on the social media platform.

But the Tokyo stock exchange measures stock market valuation differently, counting shares that companies hold in themselves and which cannot be purchased by outside investors.
Such shares, which are described as being held “in Treasury”, are the result of firms buying their own stock to boost returns to investors.
The practice is sometimes criticised as an artificial means of propping up a company’s stock market performance.
Including Treasury shares, Toyota remained the world’s most valuable carmaker at $205bn, until Tesla blew past that watermark on Wednesday. Tesla does not hold any shares in Treasury.

SA Startup Making Waves with New COVID-19 Tracing Tech | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A South African startup has launched a cheap approach to contact tracing in efforts to help with coronavirus measures.
Contact tracing is a method of tracking used in countries like the United Kingdom, Singapore and South Korea to aid in containing SARS-CoV-2 infections. The tracing is able to track exactly who was in contact with an infectious person and thus limit further contact.
South Korea, one of the only countries on Earth that have been able to bring a massive COVID-19 outbreak rapidly under control used contact tracing heavily. Currently, the country has just over a thousand cases and is no longer forcing stay-at-home lockdowns and most businesses are open.

The country is relying on high-tech solutions — a government app tracks the location of new airport arrivals, and mandatory location tracking bracelets are given to people who break quarantine laws.
Business Insider reports that the UK is also now due to trial its own contact-tracing app that will warn users of when they’ve come into contact with someone who has the virus. These solutions are strictly high-tech, however, and use apps installed on smartphones. Although the smartphone penetration in South Africa is over 80% it is still no match for the massive existing install bases of smartphones like in the UK or in South Korea.
Luckily, South African startup Automatech has stepped forward with a new low-tech solution. The company’s Active Contact Tracing uses nothing but small tags and its own software to track contact between people. According to Tim Stevens, a director at Automatech, the new technology has attracted international interest as well as the attention of much larger South African companies.

The technology was originally developed for the South African market, to require no sophisticated hardware or lots of data. The devices are relatively cheap – $15.09 (R250) for a unit, which means that a medium-sized company of 50 people can get set up for $905.57 (R15,000).
Companies like SA mega-retailer Tiger Brands and Japanese multinational corporation Pioneer have already signed up for Automatech’s solution. The company is now in talks to bring their contact tracing to several mining companies.
The tags don’t track your location. “We don’t care where you are,” says Stevens. Rather, they track interactions with other tags, so that the company can see who you’ve come into contact with.
The tags could save companies millions of Rand if they function as intended, as in the case of an outbreak in a factory, for example, the entire factory needs to shut down for weeks while all employees self-isolate. Instead, the tags will be able to indicate precisely who infected persons have come into contact with. Only those who have come into contact need to go into quarantine, while the rest of the force can return to work.
The tags will run for a year without needing a charge.

Mobile service providers say they are making substantial progress toward ushering in a new generation of 5G Networks that will enable ultra-high-speed mobile connectivity and a wide variety of new applications and smart infrastructure use cases. Progress includes steady work toward virtualizing core network functions and a reexamination of the security investments they will need to protect their networks and customers.
COVID-19 is not expected to significantly delay 5G deployments, according to a new global study report, “Toward a More Secure 5G World,” developed by the Business Performance Innovation (BPI) Network, in partnership with A10 Networks. The percentage of mobile service providers who say their companies are “moving rapidly toward commercial deployment” has increased significantly in the past year, climbing from 26 percent in a survey announced in early 2019 to 45 percent in the new survey. Virtually all respondents say improved security is a critical network requirement and top concern in the 5G era.
Early 5G networks are being designed in accordance with the already-approved non-standalone 5G standard. However, 30 percent of respondents say they are already proactively planning to add standalone 5G, and another 9 percent say their companies will move directly to standalone. Standalone 5G will require a whole new network core utilizing a cloud-native, virtualized, service-based architecture. Many respondents, in fact, say they are making significant progress toward network virtualization.
“Our latest study indicates that major mobile carriers around the world are on track with their 5G plans, and more expect to begin commercial build-outs in the coming months,” said Dave Murray, director of thought leadership with the BPI Network. “While COVID-19 may result in some short-term delays for operators, the pandemic ultimately demonstrates a global need for higher speed, higher capacity 5G networks and the applications and use case they enable.”
“Mobile operators globally need to proactively prepare for the demands of a new virtualized and secure 5G world,” said Gunter Reiss, worldwide vice president of A10 Networks, a provider of secure application services for mobile operators worldwide. “That means boosting security at key protection points like the mobile edge, deploying a cloud-native infrastructure, consolidating network functions, leveraging new CI/CD integrations and DevOps automation tools, and moving to an agile and hyperscale service-based architecture as much as possible. All of these improvements will pay dividends immediately with existing networks and move carriers closer to their ultimate goals for broader 5G adoption and the roll-out of new and innovative ultra-reliable low-latency use cases.”

Other features include encouraging and maintaining social distancing measures at dining areas, monitoring and managing the provision of critical supplies and increasing the availability of resources and improving communication with employees both working remotely and in the workplace.

The first priority now: Safety…
The world we will enter now will be placing safety as its top-most priority. While companies need to work again to earn money, they will still be careful about maintaining social distancing. Google Maps is Making Wheelchair-Accessible Locations Easier to Spot | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

In honour of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Google is adding a long-overdue feature to its Maps app that puts details about a location’s accessibility facilities front and centre.
With the “Accessible Places” feature enabled, business and points of interest with wheelchair-accessible entrances are marked with a wheelchair icon along with information about whether accessible seating, restrooms, and parking are available. Previously, all that information was tucked away in a location’s “About” menu, which users would have to navigate to for every destination individually.
“With this feature ‘rollout’, it’s easier to find and contribute wheelchair accessibility information to Google Maps,” Google Maps software engineer Sasha Blair-Goldensohn says in a company blog post.
“That benefits everyone, from those of us using wheelchairs and parents pushing strollers to older adults with tired legs and people hauling heavy items. And in this time of COVID-19, it’s especially important to know before you go so that you won’t be stranded outside that pharmacy, grocery or restaurant.”

Per Thursday’s blog, it’s first rolling out to users in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and America with support for additional countries “on the way.” There is still no word when the feature will be available in Africa.
Gizmodo reports that as of right now, Google Maps contains accessibility information for more than 15 million places worldwide. After a call for contributors in 2017, 120 million users posted updates on Google Maps regarding the presence of wheelchair-accessible facilities.
An estimated 130 million people worldwide are wheelchair users and roughly 30 million Americans said they had difficulty climbing stairs or used a wheelchair, cane, crutches or walker, according to the last nationwide census.
To turn the feature on, users can head to the app’s “Settings” menu, then navigate to “Accessibility Settings,” and toggle on “Accessible Places.”

History in the making: how libraries are capturing the pandemic for posterity | Museums- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

ow do you preserve a pandemic? Libraries, museums and historical associations around the world are struggling to survive right now but they’re also asking themselves this critical question. They know future generations will inevitably study Covid-19 – so what are the moments and materials we should capture for people in the future, and how can we capture them?
Collecting institutions around Australia have launched a series of projects aimed at creating coronavirus archives, and key to the ongoing efforts are the contributions of the general public.
The State Library of Victoria is working to enlist an army of citizen collectors who can help it gather Covid-19 related materials. This is the idea behind Memory Bank: A Collective Isolation Project, the library’s major pandemic archiving project.
“A citizen collector really needs to be an anthropologist for the future and to think about the kinds of things that we take for granted that someone in the future may find absolutely fascinating,” says a senior curator, Carolyn Fraser. She lists leaflets, pamphlets and temporary take-out menus as examples of items that the library might be interested in acquiring.
In addition to asking people to hold on to pandemic paraphernalia, the library is also releasing a series of weekly prompts which will encourage people to share details about their pandemic lives. The first prompt was “What’s in your fridge or pantry today?” Few of us would think to photograph our fridge or pantry, but knowing what’s in there could be useful for future scholars.
“Things like receipts and shopping lists that, within the context of an archive, are really, really telling for people beyond this moment, may seem like rubbish to us now,” Fraser says.
Dr Peter Hobbins, a medical historian, is also working to preserve pandemic-related ephemera. He started the #covidstreetarchive, a grassroots project encouraging people to photograph their streets and neighbourhoods, and to share their snaps on social media. The hashtag is filled with images of familiar sites: “closed” signs in shopfronts, empty streets and teddy bears in windows.
“The idea behind the #covidstreetarchive comes out of having been a historian who has studied the 1918-19 influenza pandemic and being aware that there are huge gaps in how we understand what it was like living through that period,” Hobbins says.
He notes that our understanding of domestic life and the impact of the 1918 flu on businesses is particularly limited, and he hopes that starting Covid-19 archiving efforts now will help minimise similar gaps for future historians.
In many ways, we’re already primed to preserve a pandemic. Smartphones and social media make it easy for us to share details about our daily lives.
The New South Wales State Library embarked on a similar project to Hobbins’, asking people to share pictures from self-isolation on social media using the hashtag #NSWathome. By the end of April, thousands of photos had been shared on the hashtag via Instagram and Twitter, from self-isolation dinners and baking projects; home improvement and home-schooling projects; and images of contributors attending Zoom work meetings, workouts and happy hours.
People are also being encouraged to keep a written record. The Diary Files is another of the Covid-19 projects launched by the SLNSW. A collective journalling project, contributors are invited to write and share short reflections on their circumstances. Early contributors include the literary and cultural personalities Tim Ross, Gretel Killeen, Michelle Law, Tony Birch and Wendy Sharpe, giving accounts of their experience during self-isolation.
Bruce Baskerville, a historian involved in a similar project at the Centre for Western Australian History, is also encouraging people to keep a record of their thoughts, feelings and observations. “This is creating the archive that historians and researchers will use in the future to see how ordinary people experienced this event,” Baskerville says.
Historians and curators involved in collecting efforts acknowledge that they don’t know how future generations will use the archives. Your social media snaps could end up in a museum exhibition; your diary entries could be the basis for a podcast; the teddy bear in your front window could feature in a material history of the pandemic. As Fraser says: “There’s a huge range of possibilities, and probably possibilities that we can’t even imagine right now.”

Making sense of changing consumer media consumption during the pandemic- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

We have all experienced sudden dramatic changes in our lives, so it’s no surprise that consumer media consumption has also been turned upside-down. Many of the new behaviours we’re witnessing are trends that were bubbling up under the surface and have been fast-tracked by the crisis.
Brands need to react to these changes in behaviour and consumption in order to stay relevant and, ultimately, survive. At least thing is certain in these unpredictable times: there will be no swift return to our previous normality. Looking ahead, here are the four key consumer media trends businesses have to adapt to sooner rather than later.
High numbers return to social media as key source of news
Lapsed or occasional social media users are flocking back as a way to keep in touch and augment their news sources. According to Global WebTrends, 30% of those surveyed are using Facebook for information about coronavirus, with 19% turning to Twitter and 18% to YouTube.
There was previously a lot of talk of millennials being turned off Facebook. Now a whopping 50% are using it for information about the virus (compared to an estimated 40% for WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube). While Facebook may have been making a conscious effort to move away from news before the crisis, 39% of people of all ages are now turning to social media to read more news stories.
Bear in mind, however, that another study of US and UK consumers found that 40% of people are concerned about inaccurate Covid-19 information. The exception, however, is that there seems to be widespread trust in the reported figures of infection and mortality rates.
Online video goes mainstream
With more time on our hands and a need for stimulation, we are all consuming more video content — and longer-form content is doing particularly well. Overall, 38% are watching more online video.
Some of the real heroes of lockdown have been fitness gurus providing videos to keep the nation fit (and entertained!). YouTube has come into its own at this time, with influencers like Joe Wicks and Mr Motivator seeing millions of viewers and new interest.
Meanwhile, YouTube and Instagram are seeing a big increase in people watching live video content. Instagram users are showing renewed interest in this format for everything from live cooking demos to meditation masterclasses. Similarly, with music venues closed and festival season postponed, DJs are taking to Facebook for a host of listen live parties. The genie seems out of the bottle with video and it may well be a trend that carries on when lockdown ends.
It’s not all about longer-form content, though. TikTok is also offering lighthearted distraction and snackable content. There were 315 million installs across Apple’s App Store and Android’s Google Play in the first three months of 2020, according to the analytics firm Sensor Tower.
Brands supporting people are rewarded
The new mood of communality in the country is perhaps best symbolised by the weekly clap for carers. Businesses have followed suit in this time of crisis. So many companies have pivoted at short notice to help people in need, whether it’s local caterers providing meals for NHS workers or Dyson producing ventilators.
There are encouraging signs for advertisers in this new world. According to Kantar, 92% of people still think brands should advertise, but 77% expect these same brands to be helpful in the new everyday life. In other words, businesses need to think about how they can be part of the solution at this time. Those that promote their work in this area — rather than just focusing on selling — will be rewarded. Those that react accordingly are building a lot of goodwill and are best placed to remain relevant when the crisis begins to subside.
Celebrities as everyday people
While footballers and some celebrities faced some stick at the beginning of the crisis, some football clubs are now showing the human faces of the previously god-like players. The recent Liverpool FC Zoom team meeting, for instance, was broadcast to fans. This virus has been a great leveller and seeing Mike Jagger’s living room at the recent One World Together At Home concert really helped to bring these stars off a pedestal. With many peoples’ financial futures in doubt, conspicuous shows of wealth will hit a wrong note.
New ads, such as the latest EE commercial with an earnest Kevin Bacon, reflect this new presentation of celebrities as everyday people trying to help. Brands will be likely to continue to use their star talent in a much more considered way in the future. The real celebrities of this crisis, after all, are doctors, nurses, and Captain Tom.
We’re all going about our lives differently and there is no sign this is likely to change in the near future. Brands that react accordingly and respond to these new behavioural trends will be best placed to weather the storm — and come out of it in a stronger position.

The schoolboy brothers making coronavirus visors for care workers | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

The young brothers were thrilled to find a 3D printer under their Christmas tree. Joseph, 13, planned to make Minecraft figures; Isaac, 11, Pokémon characters.
But the Sparey-Taylor family was about to move house, so the printer stayed in its box for a few weeks. Then lockdown came. The move was off, the boys’ school closed, and the 3D printer seemed a good way of filling long days at home.
Instead of Pokémon and Minecraft figures, the boys – with help from their parents – embarked on a very different project: printing PPE visors for people working in local care homes in Wrexham, north Wales.
A month after their first attempt, the project has grown into a volunteer hub, manned by 30 people around the clock based in a local school and using dozens of donated and crowdfunded printers to supply 200 visors a day. A new injection-moulding process will shortly come on stream, enabling the group to increase production to up to 8,000 a day.
“I am so proud of them and how this has grown,” said Rebecca Sparey-Taylor, a curate who had been due to take up a new post today as vicar for four churches in Denbigh before lockdown scuppered the move. Graham, her husband, lectures in automotive engineering at the University of Wolverhampton.
The boys designed their first visor on the basis of a photograph posted online by an engineering friend of the family. Within a few days, a Facebook appeal had resulted in donations of acetate sheeting to use for screens; and within a week, Ysgol Clywedog senior school in Wrexham had offered its computer department and invested in 10 3D printers.

A second appeal, asking for the loan or funding for more 3D printers, resulted in 9 to complement the school’s 90 computers.
Last week, the hub, now known as PPE Hwb Wrexham, heard that two injection-moulding machines – one donated by Toolmakers Ltd and Newton Plastics Ltd, and the other funded by North Wales Freemasons – will be set up this week, allowing a huge increase in output.

“We have a fantastic team of volunteers,” said Rebecca Sparey-Taylor. “Some have tech backgrounds, but we also have some with no experience, including relatives of NHS workers. I’ve been impressed by the number of teenagers and students who’ve volunteered. Young people get such a bad press, but they’re so keen to help – they’re an absolute inspiration.”
Wrexham councillor Phil Wynn, who has been heavily involved with the project, said: “We’d hoped to make a few hundred masks, but we’ve gone from this to a project where we make 1,000 visors a week – and that number is growing. We have people at home working on their own machines and in schools across the town.”
The boys are still producing visors at home, and visiting the hub regularly, said Sparey-Taylor. They have been astonished at how quickly the project developed. “I heard Joseph describing it as like having a caterpillar in your hand which grows into a beautiful butterfly and flies away.”
Isaac said he felt “kind of overwhelmed” by the speed of events. “There’s so much going on now, but I feel proud at helping to start it off.”

How brands are making use of outdoor during the coronavirus pandemic- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Much has already been said about the impact of coronavirus and the true impact on the advertising industry, and on my sector, the out-of-home (OOH) industry. Despite the challenges we are facing, OOH remains in a unique position to make a difference to the communities it is embedded in.
This unique moment in history demands caution from advertisers as we have already seen a backlash against some brands that have tried to capitalize on the situation,such as McDonald’s in Brazil, which separated its golden arches to encourage social distancing. It is essential that brands that ‘play’ in this area need to walk the walk as well as talk the talk.
The coronavirus is not an advertising brief, but in the face of adversity we have seen some incredible moves by companies all over the world doing what they can to make a difference: from Brewdog shifting its manufacturing capabilities to produce hand sanitiser to Pret A Manger offering half-price hot drinks to NHS workers.
And while for many brands OOH may not feel like an appropriate medium right now, it does still have a role to play. As an inherent part of our infrastructure and an endless canvas, it is in a unique position to deliver value not just for brands and governments but broader society too. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen impactful OOH campaigns around that world that are falling broadly under the following categories:
A celebration of heroes (particularly in the UK)
We’ve seen the London Eye and other landmarks turning blue as part of the Clap For Our Carers campaign, the Thank You NHS projections on hospitals up and down the country and of course, the OOH industry’s own campaign saluting the NHS and keyworkers on the front line.

Media as a service
From the Government’s simple but effective ‘Stay At Home’ campaign to the striking #Stayathome illumination on Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper, we’ve seen every type of OOH activation used to encourage people to stay at home and practice social distancing during the pandemic. And as our physical world shrinks, what is happening locally is becoming increasingly important, with OOH providing a space to communicate community information, advice, and support.
Campaigning
A number of brands have taken to OOH to highlight initiatives they may be backing, such as Just Park’s ‘Park Free’ initiative for NHS workers, or the Flower Council of Holland’s ‘Let Hope Bloom’ floral sculpture special build to support the floriculture industry and send a message of hope, love, gratitude, and support.

OOH has always been more than an advertising medium and these campaigns, and the many more we see emerging every week, have demonstrated how powerful OOH can be. With the advent of social media, its also not always essential for people to be at street level to see, experience and share these campaigns either, as we’ve seen with images of the amazing blue landmarks for the Clap for our Carers campaign filling our feeds.
While it is not yet clear when the public will be back on the streets and how their behaviors may have changed, what is clear is that OOH is ready and able to quickly respond.
