Along with this, data can be accepted and retained from all data sources in a data lake since it supports all types of data. 
How is it different from a data warehouse?
A data warehouse would be a more refined version of a data lake. All data is stored in an organised manner with everything in order and archived correctly. When the data comes in, it is analysed and checked to know what its purpose to business processes would be. Only when there is a purpose the data is solving, it is added to the warehouse. The structure and scheme of the data are established so it can ready to use for analysis and operations. Another major distinction is that a data warehouse stores data that comes from transactional systems and business applications. 
Here is where data lake particularly stands out. It stores data that comes from non-relational data such as mobile apps, IoT devices, and social media as well. This data can be tried with different types of analytics such as SQL queries, full-text search, real-time analytics, machine learning, etc which could give fruitful insights. 
What are its benefits?
A Data Lake will empower faster decision making since there are all kinds of data available that can be analyzed un multiple ways which can yield better results. A data lake brings these advantages to an organisation: 
Better customer interactions
Since a data lake accepts data from all kinds of sources, the CRM platform could be fed with customer data that has become from social media analytics and marketing platforms with buying history. This would mean that better insights on customers would make promotions and rewards better and hence result in increased customer loyalty. 
A good source for R&D innovation
Since the data is not structured or has a hierarchy, it would be easier for the R&D department to test their theories on this data and ascertain results. Since they are able to test their theories, the results will help reach a successful result that would benefit business processes. 
More efficiency in operations
As the IoT revolution calls for more data collection, a data lake makes it possible to store data and run analytics on that data easily. This will bring more clarity and insight into operational costs and quality. 
What are the challenges?
The one thing that a data lake can lead to is a data swamp. Since the data is raw and there is not any restriction on what content is stored, it can be difficult to find the right data. Without the right data, it will be tougher to draw up insights and solutions. Hence, a data lake needs some kind of regulation so the assortment of data is easier and not completely off track.

Intel’s 10th-gen Comet Lake desktop CPUs might not arrive until June – Blog – 10 minute

Rumor mill: Intel is rumored to finally release its 10th generation Comet Lake desktop chips next month, but the CPUs could be another product delayed by the coronavirus disruption, according to a new report.
While the Comet Lake laptop processors arrived last summer, the launch date of the desktop versions is still a mystery. But we now might have a better idea of when they’ll arrive, thanks to Unikoshardware.com, which has posted pictures of the Intel Core i5-10400 and a slide from the company.

The interesting part of the slide is the ‘Product Introduction Date (Press embargo)’ section, which reads: “Press News Embargo: April 13 – June 26, 2020.”
We don’t know if the slide is genuine, so take this with a pinch of salt, but it suggests there is no set embargo date for the chips’ launch. That could mean Intel is anticipating missing the April release date, with the CPUs potentially not launching until June.
If there really is a delay, it can almost certainly be attributed to the coronavirus. As noted by Tom’s Hardware, it wouldn’t make sense for Intel to release the chips if its partners can’t produce supporting motherboards in time.
The more optimistic and likely alternative is that Intel will be officially announcing the Comet Lake desktop chips on April 13, before introducing the various CPUs between then and June 26, each one with its own embargo date.
We’re expecting to see over twenty 10th-gen Comet Lake desktop chips, including the 10-core/20-thread i9-10900K that replaces the i9-9900K. Leaks say the flagship CPU will feature 125W TDP, a base frequency of 3.7GHz, and boost to 5.1GHz. The chips will have hyperthreading enabled from the most expensive model all the way down to the Pentium G6400T, unlike the current-gen CPUs, where it’s only on the i9 series.

Dell video reveals 10th-gen Comet Lake desktop CPUs are on their way – Blog – 10 minute

Highly anticipated: Intel debuted its 10th-generation Comet Lake laptop processors last summer, but we’re still waiting for any official word on the desktop version of these chips. However, a new YouTube video from Dell suggests it won’t be long before they arrive.
In a clip for Dell’s XPS Tower and XPS Tower Special Edition, it’s stated that they feature “10th Gen Intel Core Processors,” marking the first time we’ve seen the non-mobile version of these chips. Sadly, the video has just been set to private, but you can view a screen grab of the reveal above.
There has been the X-Series version, including the $1,000 Core i9-10980XE, but Intel says these are 9th-generation CPUs.
It’s thought that there will be over twenty 10th-gen Comet Lake desktop chips, including the 10-core/20-thread i9-10900K that replaces the i9-9900K. Leaks say the flagship CPU will feature 125W TDP, a base frequency of 3.7GHz, and boost to 5.1GHz.

With these processors, Intel will be looking to take on AMD and its third-generation Ryzen CPUs. Team Red has been chipping away at its rival’s desktop CPU market share for years, so Intel will be hoping to get back in the game with Comet Lake. The chips will have hyperthreading enabled from the i9-10900K all the way down to the Pentium G6400T, unlike the current-gen, where it’s only on the i9 series. They will also be more competitively priced against Ryzen.
Intel will have its work cut out, though. For a start, while AMD is down to 7nm, Comet Lake is based on a refined version of the 14-nanometer process Intel’s been using since Skylake, meaning they’ll have a higher power draw—up to 300W at maximum load. And with the latest Intel chips rumored to arrive in April, it won’t be too long before they’re competing against the fourth-gen Ryzen series, which launch sometime in Q3.

Lake Macquarie City Council launches new community portal – Projects- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Lake Macquarie City Council has rebuilt its online presence as it established a new digital service platform to streamline the way it engages with residents.
The new community portal was designed to offer council a single view of its customers and a personalised online portal through which forms could be accessed or submitted around-the-clock.
Applications and development coordinator Tom Eather told iTnews It was initially envisaged as a plug-in to the council’s existing website, however, a review of the website led to a significant widening of the projects scope.
“The website was built by the old communications manager mainly as a way of sharing council news,” Eather said.
“So there were about 5000 pages that were mostly content and full of council jargon, rather than services customers could use.”
Working with CMS provider OpenCities, the council designed a new site that could manage all of its current digital interactions and had the scope to incorporate any future functionality with minimal work or disruption.
Strong buy-in from the council’s chief executive helped ensure the expanded scope of the project was fully supported by the council and all of the divisions which suddenly had to come onboard.
Eather said that while the early stages had proved difficult due to the unexpected expansion, developing the new site and community portal using agile methodologies and a beta website on which customers could give feedback helped deliver a robust result.
“This was actually OpenCities’ first time doing a beta launch in Australia, I think because local government is typically quite risk averse by nature.
“But we’d definitely do it again. Our IT team is used to working that way, and the positive feedback helped keep the project on track.”
The only major complaint, Eather said, was that the old site and its search function were so broken users had just rote learned where to find the documents and services they needed, all of which was moved about in the rebuild.
Thankfully, the new site’s search function works fine those complaints are reducing as users figure out how to find the information and services they need.
Using data from Deloitte, the council estimates the switch to greater online service delivery will save almost $450,000 dollars in the coming year through reduced calls to its data centre and quicker processing times.

Intel Tiger Lake NUCs spotted in new leak, might include Xe graphics – Blog – 10 minute

Rumor mill: While manufacturers like Razer are trying to extend the NUC concept to a modular gaming PC that can fit inside an eGPU enclosure, Intel is busy working on the next generation of small form factor PCs that are said to hit the market later this year with Tiger Lake CPUs, PCIe 4.0 SSD support, and possibly even laptop-grade Xe GPUs.
The next generation of Intel NUCs – codenamed Panther Canyon and Phantom Canyon – may have been spotted by the folks at FanlessTech. The new series will reportedly replace the current NUC 10 Performance and NUC 10 Extreme, and include a few specs that Intel may not be ready to talk about on official channels.
Interestingly, both new models will come with 28W Tiger Lake U-series CPUs that can be paired up with up to 64GB of dual-channel DDR4-3200 RAM.

This means that both units will come with Intel’s Xe integrated graphics, but the company is supposedly not confident enough at this time about its dedicated Xe graphics prototypes to include them in the new NUCs, so it’s also exploring 3rd party options from AMD and Nvidia with 6 or 8 GB of VRAM.
In terms of storage, the Panther Canyon lineup will come with a tall case that can accommodate both a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVME SSD and a standard 2.5 inch SSD, as well as a more compact version that can only house the former. Those looking to get a bit more out of their tiny NUC will be able to opt for a combination of a large, inexpensive 2.5 inch SSD and Intel’s Optane Memory M10.

The housing on the Phantom Canyon looks similar to the Hades Canyon models, with a host of connectivity options including HDMI 2.0b, Mini DisplayPort 1.4, several USB 3.0 ports, and two Thunderbolt 3 ports. There’s also 10/100/1000/2500 Mbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5 for your networking needs. As is always the case with these small form factor PCs, they don’t have an internal power supply, so they’ll need a large power brick.
The new SFF PCs are expected to hit the market sometime in the second half of this year, starting with the Panther Canyon NUC.

Dell’s new XPS 13 packs Ice Lake CPUs and a larger display – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Dell ahead of next week’s annual CES has announced a new version of its popular XPS 13 2-in-1 sporting a larger display, faster internals and a thinner profile to boot. Look for them to go on sale starting January 7, 2020.
The new XPS 13 is constructed of machined aluminum, carbon fiber, woven glass fiber and Corning Gorilla Glass and packs a 13.4-inch, 16:10 display in an 11-inch form factor that Dell said should still fit neatly on an airplane tray table. The XPS InfinityEdge display is also 25 percent brighter than before, we’re told.

Under the proverbial hood, you’ll find 10th Gen Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processor options as well as an array of memory and storage configurations. You also have options when it comes to the display: there’s the standard FHD+ (1,920 x 1,200), an FHD+ variant with a touchscreen and a UHD+ (3,840 x 2,400) model with touchscreen.
The new Dell XPS 13 starts at $999.99 and will be available in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Sweden and France from January 7 before a global launch next month. A developer edition that swaps out Windows 10 for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS starts at $1,199.99 and will be available in February.

The 2020 Consumer Electronics Show officially kicks off on January 7 and runs through January 10 in Las Vegas. As always, the festivities – and onslaught of tech news – start a couple of days earlier with the arrival of media days starting January 5.

Intel Walks Back Apollo Lake CPU Recall

Last week, Intel published a PCN (Public Change Notice) on its QDMS website declaring that certain Apollo Lake processors had flaws and would be discontinued. The initial notification the company published was straightforward: An issue had been identified with the Low Pin Count (LPC) Real Time Clock (RTC) SD Card interface on Intel Celeron N3350, J3355, J3455, and the Intel Pentium N4200 processors. According to Intel, this issue results “in degradation of these signals at a rate higher than Intel’s quality goals after multiple years in service.”

Apollo Lake is the 14nm Goldmont-powered follow-up to Intel’s Bay Trail platform from several years ago. The Goldmont architecture provides a significant performance uplift compared with the old Silvermont architecture, and it pairs the newer CPUSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce design with Skylake Gen9 graphics. It’s since been succeeded in-market by its own refresh, Gemini Lake. Goldmont / Apollo Lake parts first shipped in 2016. The original plan was to replace the old B1 stepping of these parts with a new F1 stepping.

Then, after sites had begun to pick up on the announcement, it vanished. The company has now replaced it with a new PCN and different instructions for end customers.

According to this new document, customers who do not need “Intel IOTG Long Life Product Availability” can continue to rely on the B1 stepping parts without any worry. Only customers who need a guarantee under this program, it’s implied, may need to switch from B1 to F1 steppings. The F1 parts, meanwhile, are confirmed to still match all PC hardware requirements.

There are a few more pieces to this puzzle to consider. First, Intel dealt with a very similar problem to this back in 2017, when it announced it would set up a reserve fund for repair costs related to issues with the Atom C2000 family. These parts, codenamed Avoton, had exactly the same issue — Circuit degradation can lead to early product failure.

Also in 2017, Intel extended the expected platform life for its IoT products, from seven years to 15. It may be that this is the “Intel IOTG Long Life Product Availability” that the company referred to in the text above. What Intel is saying, we think, is that only customers who expect to need platform support for the full 15 years are going to have anything to worry about. Customers who are planning to use the hardware for a length of time that corresponds to the typical PC lifecycle, on the other hand, won’t need to replace equipment.

As for why Intel pulled this PDN and replaced it with a different one, the company is likely sensitive to the idea that any of its products have reliability issues. The fact that this problem seems to be repeating — Apollo Lake chips from 2016 are having problems in 2019, just as Avoton chips launched in 2013 started having issues in 2016 — is not a positive. Hopefully, the new F1 steppings resolve this issue, once and for all.

Leak Points to Intel Comet Lake Desktops Arriving in 2020: 10 Cores, New Socket

We’ve heard for a while that Intel might respond to AMD’s 7nm onslaught with higher core counts on desktop processors. A new leak suggests that’s exactly what the company will do, with a new chipset supporting up to 10-core CPUs built on the company’s mature 14nm process. This will supposedly require a new CPU socket, as Intel is increasing the power delivery and capability of its desktop motherboards to compensate for the higher power requirements in a 10-core chip.

The new socket is supposedly LGA 1200 and the top-end chips will offer 10C/20T configurations if rumors are to be believed. TDP is also finally rising, up to 125W. This last is something of an interesting point. Intel CPU power consumption currently has little relation to TDP if you allow the CPU to boost; TDP is measured at base clock, not boost clock. Intel may need to expand TDP to deal with adding more CPU cores, but in the past, it has kept its CPUsSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce in the same TDP brackets by cutting base clock.

Our guess is that Intel is raising TDP because it doesn’t want to do this again. Cutting its base clocks further to remain within the old 95W TDP bracket with 10 cores instead of eight is probably possible, but runs the risk of creating negative comparisons against previous generation parts or AMD hardware. Intel reduced base clock speed when it moved from the Core i7-8700K to the Core i9-9900K — the 9900K has a base clock of 3.6GHz, while the 8700K is 3.7GHz. The old 7700K had a base clock of 4.2GHz, though obviously vastly inferior performance overall.

The relatively low base clock may not have been much of a concern when AMD’s own Ryzen 7 base clocks were also in the 3.6 – 3.7GHz range, but AMD adjusted its own clock ranges slightly for 7nm. The 3700X has a base clock of 3.7GHz, while the Ryzen 3800X is 3.9GHz base and the 3900X is a 3.8GHz chip. Intel may want to bring clocks up slightly to make certain it matches on base, and the only way to do that is to nudge the TDP higher.

Supposedly the new 400-series adds another 49 pins to hit LGA1200, with the extra pins used for power delivery. There would be a few new features, like integrated 802.11ax support and presumably an easier method of integrating Thunderbolt 3, similar to what we’ve seen in mobile. 65W and 35W CPUs would still be supported (and released) on this latest 14nm revision, it’s just the enthusiast TDP bracket that would stretch up to 125W. Intel would likely try to keep the boost clock as high as possible, but I don’t want to speculate on what that will be.

Catching AMD Wouldn’t Be the Goal

Anyone who has paid attention to relative standings between AMD and Intel has already realized that a 10-core Comet Lake isn’t going to match AMD in most performance areas. The 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X is on its way, and we’ve already seen what happens when a 10-core Intel HEDT CPU takes on a 16-core AMD Threadripper: The 10-core CPU loses. Mostly, it loses by a lot.

But while this might sound faintly absurd, beating AMD in absolute multi-core performance probably isn’t the goal here. Both companies are working towards their respective strengths: For AMD, that means emphasizing multi-core while working to improve single-core, where Intel still holds a narrow advantage in some games at 1080p. For Intel, that means attempting to improve single-core while competing more effectively in multi-core. Bumping up to 10 cores and raising base clock via TDP increase probably helps the company achieve that. It’s going to take more than +2 cores to put Intel seriously back in the multi-threading game, and the company knows that.

The rumors of a 10-core Comet Lake are strong enough and have been running around for long enough that I think they’re pretty solid. We suspect this generation will see the return of Hyper-Threading as well to boost Intel’s competitive standing against AMD at lower price brackets. Without any price information, we obviously can’t opine on how the two companies will stack up, but Intel has a history of introducing better price/performance ratios at major product launches. This suggests we’ll see the company adjust its core count/dollar strategy at the next major launch.

Intel Announces Cooper Lake Will Be Socketed, Compatible With Future Ice Lake CPUs

Intel may have launched Cascade Lake relatively recently, but there’s another 14nm server refresh already on the horizon. Intel lifted the lid on Cooper Lake today, giving some new details on how the CPU fits into its product lineup with Ice Lake 10nm server chips already supposedly queuing up for 2020 deployment.

Cooper Lake’s features include support for the Google-developed bfloat16 format. It will also support up to 56 CPU cores in a socketed format, unlike Cascade Lake-AP, which scales up to 56 cores but only in a soldered, BGA configuration. The new socket will reportedly be known as LGA4189. There are reports that these chips could offer up to 16 memory channels (because Cascade Lake-AP and Cooper Lake both use multiple dies on the same chip, the implication is that Intel may launch up to 16 memory channels per socket with the dual-die version).

The bfloat16 support is a major addition to Intel’s AI efforts. While 16-bit half-precision floating point numbers have been defined in the IEEE 754 standard for over 30 years, bfloat16 changes the balance between how much of the format is used for significant digits and how much is devoted to exponents. The original IEEE 754 standard is designed to prioritize precision, with just five exponent bits. The new format allows for a much greater range of values but at lower precision. This is particularly valuable for AI and deep learning calculations, and is a major step on Intel’s path to improving the performance of AI and deep learning calculations on CPUs. Intel has published a whitepaper on bfloat16 if you’re looking for more information on the topic. Google claims that using bfloat16 instead of conventional half-precision floating point can yield significant performance advantages. The company writes: “Some operations are memory-bandwidth-bound, which means the memory bandwidth determines the time spent in such operations. Storing inputs and outputs of memory-bandwidth-bound operations in the bfloat16 format reduces the amount of data that must be transferred, thus improving the speed of the operations.”

The other advantage of Cooper Lake is that the CPU will reportedly share a socket with Ice Lake servers coming in 2020. One major theorized distinction between the two families is that Ice Lake servers on 10nm may not support bfloat16, while 14nm Cooper Lake servers will. This could be the result of increased differentiation in Intel’s product lines, though it’s also possible that it reflects 10nm’s troubled development.

Bringing 56 cores to market in a socketed form factor indicates Intel expects Cooper Lake to expand to more customers than Cascade Lake / Cascade Lake-AP targeted. It also raises questions about what kind of Ice Lake servers Intel will bring to market, and whether we’ll see 56-core versions of these chips as well. To-date, all of Intel’s messaging around 10nm Ice Lake has focused on servers or mobile. This may mirror the strategy Intel used for Broadwell, where the desktop versions of the CPU were few and far between, and the mobile and server parts dominated that family — but Intel also said later that not doing a Broadwell desktop release was a mistake and that the company had goofed by skipping the market. Whether that means Intel is keeping an Ice Lake desktop launch under its hat or if the company has decided skipping desktop again does make sense this time around is still unclear.

Cooper Lake’s focus on AI processing implies that it isn’t necessarily intended to go toe-to-toe with AMD’s upcoming 7nm Epyc. AMD hasn’t said much about AI or machine learning workloads on its processors, and while its 7nm chips add support for 256-bit AVX2 operations, we haven’t heard anything from the CPU division at the company to imply a specific focus on the AI market. AMD’s efforts in this space are still GPU-based, and while its CPUs will certainly run AI code, it doesn’t seem to be gunning for the market the way Intel has. Between adding new support for AI to existing Xeons, its Movidius and Nervana products, projects like Loihi, and plans for the data center market with Xe, Intel is trying to build a market for itself to protect its HPC and high-end server business — and to tackle Nvidia’s own current dominance of the space.

Intel’s Cascade Lake With DL Boost Goes Head to Head with Nvidia’s Titan RTX in AI Tests

For the past few years, Intel has talked up its Cascade Lake servers with DL Boost (also known as VNNI, Vector Neural Net Instructions). These new capabilities are a subset of AVX-512 and are intended to specifically accelerate CPU performance in AI applications. Historically, many AI applications have favored GPUs over CPUs. The architecture of GPUs — massively parallel processors with low single-thread performance — has been a much better fit for graphics processors rather than CPUs. CPUs offer far more execution resources per thread, but even today’s multi-core CPUs are dwarfed by the parallelism available in a high-end GPU core.

Anandtech has compared the performance of Cascade Lake, the Epyc 7601 (soon to be surpassed by AMD’s 7nm Rome CPUs, but still AMD’s leading server core today), and an RTX Titan. The article, by the excellent Johan De Gelas, discusses different types of neural nets beyond the CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) that are typically benchmarked, and how a key part of Intel’s strategy is to compete against Nvidia in workloads where GPUs are not as strong or cannot yet serve the emerging needs of the market due to constraints on memory capacity (GPUs still can’t match CPUs here), the use of ‘light’ AI models that don’t require long training times, or AI models that depend on non-neural network statistical models.

Growing data center revenue is a critical component of Intel’s overall push into AI and machine learning. Nvidia, meanwhile, is keen to protect a market that it currently competes in virtually alone. Intel’s AI strategy is broad and encompasses multiple products, from Movidius and Nervana to DL Boost on Xeon, to the upcoming Xe line of GPUs. Nvidia is seeking to show that GPUs can be used to handle AI calculations in a broader range of workloads. Intel is building new AI capabilities into existing products, fielding new hardware that it hopes will impact the market, and trying to build its first serious GPU to challenge the work AMD and Nvidia do across the consumer space.

What Anandtech’s benchmarks show, in aggregate, is that the gulf between Intel and Nvidia remains wide — even with DL Boost. This graph of a Recurrent Neural Network test used a “Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network as neural network. A type of RNN, LSTM selectively “remembers” patterns over a certain duration of time.” Anandtech also used three different configurations to test it — out-of-the-box Tensorflow with conda, an Intel-optimized Tensorflow with PyPi, and a version of Tensorflow optimized from-source using Bazel, using the very latest version of Tensorflow.

This pair of images captures relative scaling between the CPUs as well as the comparison against the RTX Titan. Out of the box performance was quite poor on AMD, though it improved with the optimized code. Intel’s performance shot up like a rocket when the source-optimized version was tested, but even the source-optimized version didn’t match Titan RTX performance very well. De Gelas notes: “Secondly, we were quite amazed that our Titan RTX was less than 3 times faster than our dual Xeon setup,” which tells you something about how these comparisons run within the larger article.

DL Boost isn’t enough to close the gap between Intel and Nvidia, but in fairness, it probably was never supposed to be. Intel’s goal here is to improve AI performance enough on Xeon to make running these workloads plausible on servers that will be mostly used for other things, or when building AI models that don’t fit within the constraints of a modern GPU. The company’s longer-term goal is to compete in the AI market with a range of equipment, not just Xeons. With Xe not quite ready yet, competing in the HPC space right now means competing with Xeon.

For those of you wondering about AMD, AMD isn’t really talking about running AI workloads on Epyc CPUs, but has focused on its RocM initiative for running CUDA code on OpenCL. AMD does not talk about this side of its business very much, but Nvidia dominates the market for AI and HPC GPU applications. Both AMD and Intel want a piece of the space. Right now, both appear to be fighting uphill to claim one.
