Curtin Uni to launch 5G research lab with Optus – Strategy – Training & Development – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Optus and Curtin University have teamed up to use the telco’s nascent 5G network for teaching, research and industry collaboration and establish an on-campus 5G lab.
Optus’ first 5G partnership with a university will also be used to further Curtin’s smart campus initiatives that kicked off in 2017 and increase adoption of emerging technologies like augmented reality by using the high-speed, low-latency network.
Curtin vice-chancellor Deborah Terry said the co-investment builds on the university’s relationship with Optus, which has had a strong focus on data science and applied research into artificial intelligence.
“The lab will give us the space to educate and conceptualise the application of the new technology and enable our students and staff to make substantial contributions to the Australian industry and economy,” she said in a statement.
“Curtin’s new smart campus will allow students to learn new digital skills and experience the power of 5G through practical, hands-on applied research while collaborating with industry.
“We will also be able to better integrate emerging technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence into our teaching and learning programs.”
Importantly for a WA-based institution, the increased connectivity should also help overcome “the tyranny of distance” in delivering remote education and telehealth operations, Terry said.
Optus Business vice president of product innovation Deon Liebenberg said the collaboration with Curtin will be a practical solution to advance 5G developments and use cases across a range of industries including mining, agriculture, health and fossil fuels.
“The technology’s low latency and fast speeds have the capability to transform remote learning and support academic applications of virtual and augmented reality,” he said.
“From virtual lessons and class trips, to advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics and medical training – the potential of 5G in education is enormous and we’re excited to explore its future alongside Curtin.”
Optus’ 5G network has been expanding since its launch last year and now covers more than 740 sites in capital cities, with 72 located in the greater Perth area.

Defence partners with Gold Coast rocket lab to develop space tech – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Gilmour Space Technologies CEO Adam Gilmour. Source: Supplied

Defence has tapped Gilmour Space Technologies to co-develop the nation’s critical space infrastructure and defensive capabilities.
The Gold Coast-based hybrid rocket launch provider will work with the Defence Science and Technology group to research propulsion, materials and avionics technologies to help develop a three-stage hybrid rocket capable of launching small payloads and satellites into orbit.
Hybrid rockets rely on rocket motor that use propellants in multiple phases – usually one solid and either a gas or liquid.
Founded in 2013, Gilmour Space reportedly became the first manufacturer to run a successful suborbital test flight using 3D-printed rocket fuel.
The company has also signed an agreement to work on space tech and development with NASA.
Defence Industry Minister Melissa Price said the agreement would open the door for Australian space companies to provide space capabilities to Australia’s defence force and commercial customers.
“Recent advancements in the capabilities of micro and nano-satellites, small satellite constellations and additive manufacturing present a unique opportunity for Defence and Australian industry,” Price said.
Linda Reynolds, Minister for Defence, added that technological advances have allowed rocket systems and launch service providers to offer access to space at a greatly reduced cost and infrastructure footprint.
Gilmour Space’s existing rockets have been launched from a semi-autonomous mobile platform in outback Queensland that can be rapidly set up and removed.
Aside from the commercial outcomes derived from domestically developed aerospace technologies, Gilmour Space said the work with Defence will address a number of civil priorities identified by the Australian Space Agency including positioning, navigation, timing, communications and space access.
Under the agreement, the rocket lab expects to be launching payloads into low earth orbit from 2022.

Biotech Startup Rolls Out Mobile Lab to Boost COVID-19 Testing in Nigeria | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Tech Cabal

Biotech company 54Gene has increased Nigeria’s laboratory testing capacity for COVID-19 with a mobile laboratory in Ogun, a state in the South-West of the country.
In addition to its DNA biobank lab in Lagos, the number of molecular laboratories in the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)’s network of coronavirus test centres rises to 17 as of today, reports Tech Cabal.
54Gene, a relatively new and private company, has taken an active role in the expansion of coronavirus testing in Nigeria. In March, the biotech startup launched a fund aimed at increasing the country’s ability to test for the disease – a total of $500,000 was raised.
The mobile lab itself is a 12-meter tall container structure. It is designed as a plug and play feature that minimises the logistical challenges involved in shipping samples to another location for processing.

Sourced from Tech Cabal
It is believed that the time and costs that will be saved with the prefabricated nature of the lab will, in turn, be channelled into more pressing infrastructural needs. Attention can instead be paid to ensuring the availability of test equipment and protective gear for healthcare workers.
Partnering with 54Gene on the mobile lab are financial institution First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and Argentil Capital Partners, a Nigerian-based energy and infrastructure advisory firm.
The facility will be powered by a 10kVA solar power solution provided by partner Arnergy, a Nigerian renewable energy company.
COVID Testing in Nigeria
The relatively slow pace of testing in Nigeria has seen much criticism. The Nigerian health authorities have begun taking steps to scale up over the past month. As of March 30 when Lagos, Abuja, and Ogun states went into a federally mandated lockdown, there were only 6 accredited laboratories for testing.
In the time since, other facilities have been added in states outside Lagos, the epicentre, including northern Nigerian states like Kano where reports of strange deaths have caused widespread concern.
54Gene is planning to roll out a mobile testing lab in Kano soon.

Luxury Escapes lab gives personalised holiday recommendations based on sensory cues- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

To help Australians get over the holiday blues, Luxury Escapes has launched a lab experience in Melbourne.
The experiential activity will be live until March 7 and hopes to lift Australians from the sadness that the summer holiday months are over by helping them find holiday ideas.
Experiential agency Grafitti, which led the project, based the concept on the insight that 60% of Australians feel a ‘sense of dread’ when going back to work after the break.
The lab concept allowed people to discover their own preferences through a set of experiences design around touch, taste and sound. Based on their selections, Luxury Escapes will create a personalised luxury holiday package for them.
Luxury Escapes chief executive officer Cameron Holland, said: “The Holiday Lab offers visitors the chance to design their own dream holiday through a range of interactive and immersive sensory experiences. As consumers engage with each experience, their responses are tracked through a custom-developed algorithm that helps build the consumer’s personalised travel persona and profile, offering them a tailored ‘remedy’ for post-holiday blues.
“We’re known for our team of travel experts who spend months finding the best holiday experiences, personally testing them, and negotiating the best end to end travel experiences for our customers, and the Holiday Lab brings this curatorial approach to life in real life,” Holland concluded.

Kerrie Spaargaren, managing director, Graffiti Experiential, said that the brief gave the agency a unique chance to blend offline and online.
“We aimed to upgrade the traditional concept of a pop-up store and create an idea which would stand out from the crowd. The Holiday Lab is beautifully surprising, interactive and hyper-personalised. Each patron is evaluated based on their sensory responses and served an amazing Luxury Escapes package that matches those responses,” she said.
Throughout the experience, the lab will be promoted through PR activity, including competitions and giveaways.

Cisco, Flinders Uni open new $1.5m digital health lab – Strategy – Training & Development- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Professor Trish Williams. Source: Flinders University

Flinders University has this week launched a new $1.5 million digital health design lab, jointly funded through Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration program.
The lab will examine organisations, technologies and models of care to explore novel ways to leverage data to build better health processes that are safer, more efficient and produce higher quality patient outcomes.
One of the primary research programs will investigate cyber security and privacy measures in hospitals – an area that has at times lagged behind other industries despite the high sensitivity of patient data.
Healthcare consumers are still wary about how digital initiatives like the MyHealth Record and digital prescription services will safeguard data from hackers, insurers and other government departments or service providers.
Those concerns were vindicated last year when German security researchers found hundreds of millions of sensitive medical images being on unprotected, easily accessible servers, including around 2.6 million images in Australia.
In a similar vein, the Digital Health Design Lab will also probe safe wireless networks by developing a standards-driven framework for wireless design and implementation in a potential nod to the growing number of medical devices connected to the internet of things (IoT).
Further research is set to assess the maturity of infrastructure using an international benchmark for technological capabilities in required to support the increasing sophistication of healthcare delivery.
Opportunities to use digital health tools to support the mental health of patients and students will also be featured in the research.
“It will bring together academia, care providers and industry around the big systems challenges in the provision of healthcare,” professor of digital health systems at Flinders and Cisco chair, Trish Williams said.
It will provide insight and leadership on the role of information systems in truly transforming the care process and enabling a more resilient and patient centred healthcare environment.”
Williams, who leads the lab, added that it will be a place for demonstrating practical and scalable outcomes that “support people and process”.
This exciting venture will be driven by industry collaboration and ‘possibility thinking’”.

The MIT Media Lab controversy and getting back to ‘radical courage’, with Media Lab student Arwa Mboya – gpgmail

People win prestigious prizes in tech all the time, but there is something different about The Bold Prize. Unless you’ve been living under a literal or proverbial rock, you’ve probably heard something about the late Jeffrey Epstein, a notorious child molester and human trafficker who also happened to be a billionaire philanthropist and managed to become a ubiquitous figure in certain elite science and tech circles.

And if you’re involved in tech, the rock you’ve been living under would have had to be fully insulated from the internet to avoid reading about Epstein’s connections with MIT’s Media Lab, a leading destination for the world’s most brilliant technological minds, also known as “the future factory.”

This past week, conversations around the Media Lab were hotter than the fuel rods at Fukushima, as The New Yorker’s Ronan Farrow, perhaps the most feared and famous investigative journalist in America today, blasted out what for some were new revelations that Bill Gates, among others, had given millions of dollars to the Media Lab at Jeffrey (no fucking relation, thank you very much!) Epstein’s behest. Hours after Farrow’s piece was published, Joi Ito, the legendary but now embattled Media Lab director, resigned.

But well before before Farrow weighed in or Ito stepped away, students, faculty, and other leaders at MIT and far beyond were already on full alert about this story, thanks in large part to Arwa Michelle Mboya, a graduate student at the Media Lab, from Kenya by way of college at Yale, where she studied economics and filmmaking and learned to create virtual reality. Mboya, 25, was among the first public voices (arguably the very first) to forcefully and thoughtfully call on Ito to step down from his position.

Imagine: you’re heading into the second year of your first graduate degree, and you find yourself taking on a man who, when Barack Obama took over Wired magazine for an issue as guest editor, was one of just a couple of people the then sitting President of the United States asked to personally interview. And imagine that man was the director of your graduate program, and the reason you decided to study in it in the first place.

Imagine the pressure involved, the courage required. And imagine, soon thereafter, being completely vindicated and celebrated for your actions.

Arwa Mboya. Image via MIT Media Lab

That is precisely the journey that Arwa Mboya has been on these past few weeks, including when human rights technologist Sabrina Hersi Issa decided to crowd-fund the Bold Prize to honor Mboya’s courage, which has now brought in over $10,000 to support her ongoing work (full disclosure: I am among the over 120 contributors to the prize).

Mboya’s advocacy was never about Joi Ito personally. If you get to know her through the interview below, in fact, you’ll see she doesn’t wish him ill.

As she wrote in MIT’s The Tech nine days before Farrow’s essay and ten before Ito’s resignation, “This is not an MIT issue, and this is not a Joi Ito issue. This is an international issue where a global network of powerful individuals have used their influence to secure their privilege at the expense of women’s bodies and lives. The MIT Media Lab was nicknamed “The Future Factory” on CBS’s 60 Minutes. We are supposed to reflect the future, not just of technology but of society. When I call for Ito’s resignation, I’m fighting for the future of women.”

From the moment I read it, I thought this was a beautiful and truly bold statement by a student leader who is an inspiring example of the extraordinary caliber of student that the Media Lab draws.

But in getting to know her a bit since reading it, I’ve learned that her message is also about even more. It’s about the fact that the women and men who called for a new direction in light of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuses and other leaders’ complicity did so in pursuit of their own inspiring dreams for a better world.

Arwa, as you’ll see below, spoke out at MIT because of her passion to use tech to inspire radical imagination among potentially millions of African youth. As she discusses both the Media Lab and her broader vision, I believe she’s already beginning to provide that inspiration.

Greg Epstein: You have had a few of the most dramatic weeks of any student I’ve met in 15 years as a chaplain at two universities. How are you doing right now?

Arwa Mboya: I’m actually pretty good. I’m not saying that for the sake of saying. I have a great support network. I’m in a lab where everyone is amazing. I’m very tired, I’ll say that. I’ve been traveling a lot and dealing with this while still trying to focus on writing a thesis. If anything, it’s more like overwhelmed and exhausted as opposed to not doing well in and of itself.

Epstein: Looking at your writing — you’ve got a great Medium blog that you started long before MIT and maintained while you’ve been here — it struck me that in speaking your mind and heart about this Media Lab issue, you’ve done exactly what you set out to do when you came here. You set out to be brave, to live life, as the Helen Keller quote on your website says, as either a great adventure or nothing.

Also, when you came to the Media Lab, you were the best-case scenario for anyone who works on publicizing this place. You spoke and wrote about the Lab as your absolute dream. When you were in Africa, or Australia, or at Yale, how did you come to see this as the best place in the world for you to express the creative and civic dreams that you had?

Mboya: That’s a good question — what drew me here? The Media Lab is amazing. I read Whiplash, which is Joi Ito’s book about the nine principles of the Media Lab, and it really resonated with me. It was a place for misfits. It was a place for people who are curious and who just want to explore and experiment and mix different fields, which is exactly what I’ve been doing before.

From high school, I was very narrow in my focus; at Yale I did Econ and film, so that had a little more edge. After I graduated I insisted on not taking a more conventional path many students from Yale take, so [I] moved back to Kenya and worked on many different projects, got into adventure sports, got into travel more.

Epstein: Your website is full of pictures of you flipping over, skydiving, gymnastics — things that require both strength and courage.

Mboya: I’d always been an athlete, loved the outdoors.

I remember being in Vietnam; I’d never done a backflip. I was like, “Okay, I’m going to learn how to do this.” But it’s really scary jumping backwards; the fear. Is, you can’t see where you’re going. I remember telling myself, ” Okay, just jump over the fear. Just shut it off and do it. Your body will follow.” I did and I was like, “Oh, that was easy.” It’s not complicated. Most people could do it if they just said, “Okay, I’ll jump.”

It really stuck with me. A lot of decisions I’ve [since] made, that I’m scared of, I think, “Okay, just jump, and your body will follow.” The Media Lab was like that as well.

I really wanted to go there, I just didn’t think there was a place for me. It was like, I’m not techie enough, I’m not anything enough. Applying was, ’just jump,’ you never know what will happen.

Image from Arwa Mboya

Epstein: Back when you were applying, you wrote about experiencing what applicants to elite schools often call “imposter syndrome.” This is where I want to be, but will they want me?

Mboya: Exactly.
