Impact of Coronavirus on Sports – Blog – 10 minute

The Olympics are held every two years, and each one is the type of international event that’s been in the works for a decade or more. Cities bid to be the host and then work for years and pour billions of dollars into preparations.
With all of that planning and investment, it’s an enormous event that could only be stopped by something equally monumental. That’s exactly what happened this year, as the worldwide impact of coronavirus on sports was seen in the Tokyo Olympics postponing this summer’s event to July 2021.
Japan had spent about $12 billion preparing for the event, and much of that will likely not be made back. The travel industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, and it’s impossible to say how many people will be willing to travel to such a large event next summer.
Sports all around the world have been affected, with most shut down completely for at least several weeks. One estimation looking at the US stoppage of pro, college, and youth sports put the revenue loss at $12 billion, and that figure could double if the NFL and college football aren’t able to return in the fall.
Amateur athletes and weekend warriors have been impacted in a few different ways as the fitness industry has dealt with COVID-19. But sports fans have largely been left in the wilderness, waiting for the sense of normalcy that games and competitions provide.
NBA’s Decision Leads the Way
For many people in the US, the full reality of the pandemic didn’t hit until the NBA suspended its season on March 11. Several games had already tipped off that evening, but during warmups for a game in Oklahoma City between the Thunder and the Utah Jazz, it was announced that the game would be postponed and fans were told to leave the arena.
Reports quickly confirmed that a Jazz player had tested positive for COVID-19, and it was revealed to be two-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert. The next day another Jazz player, Donovan Mitchell, tested positive and several more players tested positive in the following days.
The league, which had previously been considering playing games with limited or no fans in attendance, knew that one positive test meant the virus had already had a chance to spread to several more players and team personnel. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver initially announced the season would be suspended for 30 days.
As of late May, several team practice facilities have been opened for players to train but there is still no clear timeline on when, or if, the 2019-20 season will recommence. And the WNBA season that was scheduled to start on May 15 has been suspended indefinitely.
While the NBA was the first major domino, many more followed on March 12. The NCAA announced that the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, as well as its other winter and spring championships, would be cancelled. Other leagues, including the NHL and MLS, also put their seasons on hold, and no team sport in America has yet returned or started its new season, such as MLB.
In a bit of irony, Utah’s Gobert, who two days before his positive test jokingly mocked the seriousness of the coronavirus and touched all of the mics and recorders near him at a press conference, has been credited for helping people realize the seriousness of the situation. Life in the US changed rapidly after the NBA suspended its season, and Gobert later apologized for his actions and made donations to those affected by the virus.
From the digital marketing angle, a decline in overall ad spend generally followed the increase in coronavirus cases. According to Socialbakers data, by the end of March the cost per click for all worldwide sport ad accounts was about $0.09, compared to $0.124 at the same time in 2019.
Similarly, the usage of #ad and other regional sponsored hashtags decreased to a 15-month low for Instagram influencers associated with worldwide sport accounts.

Other Entertainment Options
Many major sporting events that would’ve taken place over the last couple of months have been postponed or cancelled, including March Madness, the Masters, and the conclusion of seasons like the English Premier League (sorry Liverpool fans).
In their place, fans cooped up at home have been looking for their fix from something other than live sports. Many people turned to esports or other video games and streaming services, as Socialbakers data showed big increases in Instagram influencer mentions for Netflix’s documentary series “Tiger King” and the game “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” on the Nintendo Switch, compared to similar releases the previous year.

In the sports world, one streaming option reigned supreme: “The Last Dance”, a 10-part documentary produced by ESPN and Netflix about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dynasty. The debut episode on April 19 averaged 6.3 million viewers, making it easily the most-watched documentary in ESPN history and the highest-rated non-live event on the network since 2004.
Over its full run, the documentary, which was moved up from its planned release date in June, averaged 5.6 million viewers across all episodes airing on ESPN and ESPN2. The series was also available the next day on Netflix’s international streaming services, with the platform reporting that more than 23 million outside the US tuned in to at least part of the documentary.

23 was always his lucky number!

The documentary dominated most sports social media conversations in the US, but it wasn’t the only thing happening. Other slices of entertainment included basketball players participating in both a video game tournament and a HORSE competition that was sponsored by State Farm, while nearly a million fans tuned in to watch the first virtual NASCAR race on Fox Sports 1.

KBO and Bundesliga Get Worldwide Attention
Considering how eager sports fans have been for content while in quarantine, the first league to return figured to gain fans all across the globe. Enter the Korean Baseball Organization.
The timeline of sports returning is, not surprisingly, largely tied to the countries where they’re played. And since South Korea has been one of the best countries at testing and controlling the spread of the coronavirus, its baseball league was able to be the first team sports league to return to action on May 5.
It didn’t matter that games would air largely in the middle of the night for US fans; many stayed up to watch the games on ESPN while deciding whether to become fans of the NC Dinos or the Samsung Lions.
Germany’s Bundesliga became the first major soccer league to return to action on May 17, with games similarly aired on ESPN for sports-starved fans who normally wouldn’t watch soccer but are willing to take what they can get these days.

So far both leagues have been able to proceed without issues, and the KBO is even working on plans to open 20 percent of its stadium to fans by early June. Other soccer leagues including the EPL, La Liga, Serie A, and MLS are slated to return to action in June or July, pending future developments.
Meanwhile, a study of European sports sponsorships found that 72% of brands intend to extend their current partnership deals. So when games do return, there will likely be the same brands advertising in the stadiums and on TV.
Individual Sports Start to Make a Comeback
While the NBA suspending its season was the tipping point for most sports leagues, the first major cancellation in the US came two days earlier on March 9. That’s when the Indian Wells Masters, considered the fifth biggest tennis tournament of the season, was cancelled.
Other tennis tournaments worldwide made similar decisions in the following weeks, including Wimbeldon being cancelled for the first time since World War II. However, since individual sports are more easy to control than team sports, they’ve also been some of the first to return to action.
The UFC, for example, returned from hiatus on May 9 and held three events in an eight-day span at a mostly empty arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

The mixed-martial arts company has also discussed hosting future events on a so-called fight island, where fighters and training staff would be quarantined away from the general population. The NBA and MLB have also discussed a solution like that, but none have been implemented.
Meanwhile, driving is one of the safest outdoor activities for anyone during the quarantine so it makes sense that auto racing was able to come back. NASCAR drivers ditched the virtual races for real ones as the series returned to its schedule on May 17, while IndyCar and Formula One are scheduled to return in early June and early July, respectively.

Depending on which US state you live in, golf has either been encouraged as a way to safely exercise during the pandemic or courses have been closed. Some states have gone through both, but in general it’s easier for golfers to keep a safe distance from each other than most sports.
That’s why there have been some charity golf events featuring big names like Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson, and the PGA is scheduled to return in mid-June with the LPGA to follow in July.
Tennis tournaments are also scheduled to return in July, as slowly but surely sports try to get back on schedule, albeit with little or no fans in attendance.
The Takeaway
The worldwide pandemic has affected people in many different ways. Through the lens of sports, it has largely taken away both a source of entertainment for those sitting at home and a source of exercise for people unable to go play a pickup game.
In the absence of live sports, people largely turned to replays or other nostalgic forms of reliving their favorite games. Fans consume more sports on more platforms than ever before, but they still need those sports to actually take place in order to do that.
As the leagues continue to return, there’s going to be big opportunities for digital marketers to advertise to fans who either aren’t allowed to, or aren’t comfortable, attending a game in person. Because even though things are starting to return, the world is still a ways away from the sight of a sellout crowd cheering at a live game.To learn about other industries that Socialbakers has analyzed, read about how coronavirus has impacted education or how beauty influencers adapt to times of crisis.

Impact of Coronavirus on Education – Blog – 10 minute

It’s that time of year again, graduation season! Right now, our social media feeds should be flooded with photos and posts congratulating this year’s high school seniors and university graduates.
However, ceremony invitations weren’t sent this year as the impact of coronavirus has tossed out the idea of a traditional graduation all together.
The near-total closures of schools, universities, and colleges worldwide has reshaped nearly every aspect of normal life. Based on UNESCO data, more than a billion (yes, billion with a B!) students were thrown into very uncertain waters as the pandemic put a halt to in-person classes and courses.
From primary schools to PhD programs, students across the globe are experiencing the altering effects of coronavirus as classrooms move online and course curriculums stretch into the summer.
Both students and teachers have been burdened with the task of adapting to an online learning environment seemingly overnight. As well, many parents have been forced to take on the role of IT technician, teacher, and babysitter as kids remain struck at home.
Although the stark consequences of COVID-19 have thrown both families and the education industry for a loop, the sudden switch to digital learning has brought with it a few valuable lessons. In fact, the future of education has been transformed to not only accommodate online classrooms, but embrace a digital education.

How Coronavirus Has Set New Waves of Digital Transformation
Find Out Now

The Major Challenges of Online Learning
While the transition to online learning gave many schools a chance to salvage the spring semester, it didn’t come without its challenges. Students and educators were met with a number of unprecedented obstacles that made shift more complex than originally thought.
Technical Difficulties
Technology, am I right? When there’s a chance something can go wrong, it usually will.
Whether it’s unstable wifi or a confusing interface, technology plays a huge role in online learning. Subsequently, many teachers and students find it quite difficult to adjust to learning and teaching from the confines of a computer screen.
While this problem is likely to get better as users become more familiar and comfortable with the new online classroom platform, it’s nonetheless an annoyance to undergo.
Disrupted Schedules
For younger students especially, keeping a consistent schedule is extremely important for maintaining discipline and motivation. The sudden termination of in-person classes has made it much more challenging for students to properly manage their time and remain productive throughout the day.
Additionally, students must adapt to studying primarily at home with the diminished assistance of an instructor. While this may encourage students to explore new studying methods, it poses an extreme disadvantage for educators to evaluate students.
Substantial Delays
Due to the closure of schools and business, many students suddenly had no idea when or how classes would resume. During this time, teachers and administrators were understandably ill prepared as many scrambled to establish an online platform that could deliver the same quality of education as before.
This delay in courses has pushed the majority of student course schedules deeper into the summer. Although the educational system was unequipped to move 100 percent online, perhaps this experience will force schools to invest in an easily transferable digital platform for coursework in the future.
Struggling Parents
It’s no secret that most parents aren’t exactly delighted to fill the role of teacher this semester – especially those who are trying to work from home. Moving to online learning has put parents in a precarious situation as many have struggled to manage their professional and domestic responsibilities.
Furthermore, parents who are employed as health care professionals or front line workers are forced to either find childcare or take off work. This has placed extra stress on families and may even become a financial burden to some.
Emerging Opportunities for the Education Industry
While the abrupt overhaul in learning styles has come with its fair share of obstacles, it’s also managed to open the door to new opportunities. In fact, the urgent demand for digital learning has been a driving factor for providing more educational resources to students as coronavirus sets new waves of digital transformation.
Free Online Courses
Although students have lost the one-on-one learning experience offered in the classroom, several online learning platforms are seeking to help students finish the semester strong by offering free online courses.
Worldwide learning platforms, including Coursera and Khan Academy, are providing everything from online college courses to homework problem assistance. The impact of COVID-19 has inspired academic resources to become more readily accessible and widely available.
Remote Teaching/Learning
Thanks to communication and collaboration platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, remote teaching has been made available to students all over the world. Remote teaching has allowed online learning to commence and provide students with the opportunity to ask questions and interact with one another as they would in the classroom.
Even though distant learning during a pandemic can be a challenge for many students, it makes the continuation of education possible from the safety of home. Learn more about how to make the most out of video conferencing with 5 tips on how to improve your video call quality.
Reaching Students via Social Media
Before social distancing, many students would receive assignments and updates directly from their teacher. However, given the recent changes, communication has been a point of contingency as both students’ and teachers’ emails are overflowing.
Rather than sending out emails that are either going to be ignored or overlooked, schools are turning to social media in an effort to inform students of important dates and resources available to them. Social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, are all hotspots for students to get academic information willingly.
Social media platforms have played a crucial role in disseminating news about the spread of COVID-19. Learn more about what social media platforms have been doing to help during the coronavirus.
Unique Learning Experience
Online learning is an excellent opportunity to introduce students to technology that they wouldn’t have otherwise experienced. Children of all ages are getting a chance to become familiarized with video chat and its many features.
Students are also learning valuable lessons of internet safety, digital literacy and time management. The many new responsibilities will likely be a formative experience for younger generations and their relationship with technology. Learn more about the many surprising benefits of social media for teenagers.
How Higher Education Is Digitally Transforming
While it may be graduation season, it’s also deep into the recruitment process for colleges and universities around the world.  Whether it’s scouting potential students, sifting through thousands of applications, or hosting a welcome weekend for incoming freshmen, social distancing has really thrown a wrench into those plans.
Here is how higher education is dealing with it:
Virtual Campus Tours
Despite social distancing, which removed any chance of campus tours this spring, many schools have been proactive in giving prospective students an up close look at their campus. Websites such as CampusTours are offering virtual tours of more than 1,800 schools in the United States, as well as tours of schools in the United Kingdom, Canada, China, and France.
Other resourceful platforms include StriveScan, which is offering students a chance to ask questions to officials from more than 450 colleges from 45 states and 13 countries on everything from college essay advice to applying for financial aid.
More Online Classes
Before the spread of COVID-19, many colleges and universities had limited online course options, especially over the summer. However, given the situation and lack of alternative options, schools around the world have begun offering more online courses than ever before.
In fact, there’s not only more online college courses available but some schools are providing discounts as well.
Hosting Live Events
Spring and summer time are usually when universities host a number of activities on their campuses such as camps, meetings, and other ancillary activities. However, given the restrictions of social distancing, many universities are moving their activities onto social media rather than cancelling them.
A prime example of universities going digital are the countless schools opting to live stream graduation ceremonies. Instead of the normally jam-packed auditorium, students and families will be able to watch their names appear on the stage from the comfort and safety of home.
Learn more about the impact of COVID-19 on social media marketing.
Greek Life Goes Virtual
A crucial element of many American universities is the presence of greek life on campus. While thousands of incoming students would be preparing for recruitment week, this year’s drafting process will be slightly different as it will be held virtually.
For example, Stanford decided to host informal recruitment events at the end of its spring quarter. Those events include online workout sessions, cooking demos, Netflix viewing parties, game nights, and meet-and-greets with current members of some organizations.
This year’s educational experience has been quite out of the ordinary. The sudden global pandemic has pushed nearly every industry to adjust, with the education industry being no exception.
We’ve seen a move towards technology that will likely reshape our relationship and reliance on communication platforms, especially if some schools remain closed in the fall. Students around the world have been thrown for a loop, trying to not only adapt to the digital classroom but excel in an online environment.
Although the switch to online courses was a bumpy one, both students and teachers have shown a great magnitude of resilience and perseverance as the education system navigates the new normal together.

Mapping COVID-19’s impact on job losses and disadvantage – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A new map of Australian suburbs is exposing the regions most at risk of economic and social disadvantage due to COVID-19 job losses, with more than 100 locations emerging as new areas of disadvantage.
The third iteration of the Employment Vulnerability Index (EVI) was created by researchers at the University of Newcastle and Griffith University using census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Building on previous EVI data and insights on the jobs most affected by an economic downturn, Professor Scott Baum from Griffith and Professor Bill Mitchell from Newcastle modelled COVID-19’s effect on more than 80 percent of Australians.
EVI 3.0 shows two groups are at risk of job losses: historically disadvantaged areas and an emerging group that have not historically suffered disadvantage, but are likely to experience social and economic pain as a result of the pandemic.
In total, 108 locations across Australia were identified as areas of emerging disadvantage, adding to the list of 97 locations with existing disadvantage, Mitchell said.
“Regional areas will be hit hard.
“Of the 108 areas of emerging disadvantage, 69 fall in non-metropolitan regions compared to 39 in metropolitan areas.”
Baum added that the two different groups – emerging and historical – will raise drastically different issues for policymakers.
“For the group we call ‘existing disadvantage job loss suburbs’, further labour market disadvantage will cement the social and economic malaise experienced by these communities and widen the gap with the rest of the nation,” Baum said.
However, emerging areas of disadvantage will likely see a different mix of workers being able to transition with changes to the economy, while others may not be so lucky.
“The challenges may include household and community burdens associated with increasing localised financial hardship or increases in a range of social problems seen in places that have been disadvantaged over a longer term.
“How deep and long these potential impacts will be is a matter of wait and see.”
The map also highlights which regions may be impacted if government support like the JobKeeper and elevated JobSeeker payments are wound back too quickly.
“There is a real danger that the government will retract its support mechanisms too soon. This is something we have seen before,” Mitchell said.
The map shows, for instance, that regions like the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are facing some of the most widespread downturns due to the closure of tourist hotspots and curbs on international travel.
“Ultimately how these suburbs and localities fare will depend on the impact of the Federal Government’s economic rescue package and the depth of the economic downturn.
“Outcomes may not be as bad as some have predicted.”

Leveraging Geo-spatial technology to effectively map the spread of COVID-19 to minimize its impact on business- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
The spread of Covid-19 and impended lockdown has impacted the SMBs and large corporations alike. A downward trend is on the showcase across sectors be it manufacturing, retail, e-commerce, and Travel & Tourism ever since. With businesses trying to get their operations back on track, technology-backed solutions can be of great help. ‘Transerve Technologies’ through its offering ‘Transerve Online Stack (TOS)’ has come up with a solution to map Covid19 density zones using geospatial technology. This advanced solution works on Predictive Analysis and uses layers of geospatial data to track, monitor, analyze, and visually represent them into data stacks. These data stacks will help in route optimization in COVID positive zones that can further assist businesses in making statistically driven decisions.
Large and medium-sized retailers who are now eagerly waiting to re-open their stores are heavily dependent on geo-spatial datasets on deciding which outlets to open and which ones to not open. Similarly, large manufacturing companies are using geospatial data to analyze their suppliers’ catchment areas and effectively plan their sourcing strategies. Supply chain professionals across organizations and logistics companies are planning to extensively use geospatial data for the route optimization of their vehicles by avoiding the red zones. Moreover, analyzing data of existing health infrastructure and census data sets and mapping it to those infected can help policymakers and concerned authorities in identifying COVID19 containment zones. Similarly, such analysis can also estimate the load on each corona testing center and help health officials to set up more labs or increase or decrease the capacity of existing ones depending on population density and distance to the testing laboratory. With so many practical applications TOS is emerging to be a very effective tool for governments and corporates. TOS has been maintaining a Corona timeline and created interactive digital maps of all the districts in India, and color-coded them to map all the Covid19 related information.
Commenting on how ‘Transerve Online Stack’ works, Mr. Amarsh Chaturvedi, Co-Founder, Transerve and IIT-Kanpur alumnus said, “Keeping a tap on COVID19 contaminated zone is the need of the hour. Our Government is playing best on their part to keep the citizens safe from infection. It is very important for new-age entities like ours to support the Government and corporations by making the utmost use of our technology in order to deal with this global crisis. Transerve’s technologically advanced API based spatial platform serves as a single point database to access all the information related to COVID19 contaminated zones.

Mr. Ashwani Rawat, Co-Founder, Transerve and IIT-Kanpur alumnus said“With our platform, we aim at providing a helping hand to government authorities and corporates, so that the society can reap benefits on a larger scale. We are also publishing map visualizations on COVID19 related data released by Government sources from time-to-time in order to help the public in understanding the infection and its containment. The Maps published will be freely available for use by any organization globally.”
Transerve platform allows users to perform analysis on the web on real-time through intuitive process and save the results for later use. The platform provides the functionality to collect data using mobile devices, manage, analyze, and publish the geospatial data on the web in real-time.

Social impact firm Purpose joins Capgemini- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

On February 12, 2020, Capgemini announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Purpose, one of the world’s leading social impact agencies and hub for campaign innovation, headquartered in New York with outlets across the globe. The expertise of Purpose’s 100 campaigners, creatives, strategists and technologists, combined with Capgemini Invent, the digital innovation, consulting and transformation brand of the Capgemini Group, will further support clients to transform their business models and practices for impact, and engage their stakeholders in making meaningful contributions to society.
Founded in New York in 2009, Purpose has spent the last decade building a footprint and reputation for enabling impact across six continents by creating purpose-driven campaigns, branding, creative content, and participatory social impact strategies to a blue-chip client roster. It has launched major initiatives on issues ranging from refugees to international LGBT rights and established relationships with global brands and corporations, major philanthropies, the UN system, and many of the world’s leading civil society organisations.
Cyril Garcia, chief executive officer of Capgemini Invent and member of the group executive board, said: “Heightened demands from stakeholders have driven a major shift towards building business with purpose. For many large companies, this has evolved beyond corporate social responsibility to business transformation and the need for a redefinition of business models, practices and culture”.
“Purpose joining Capgemini will bolster the capabilities of our teams that are working closely with senior executives and boards, to envision and build what’s next for their organisation. Placing a positive contribution to society at the core of what they do, rethinking their commitment to Sustainable Development Goals, and committing to strong action on climate change, are the new imperatives for a sustainable business in the coming years.”
As an agency, Purpose helps clients harness participation for meaningful social impact. Its market-leading capabilities will offer the Capgemini Group’s clients a critical dimension to their business transformation strategy as well as new sources of shared value creation.
Purpose’s approach consists of four key components: its Labs that develop new public engagement innovations on the most important issues of the day such as climate change and international development; the agency team which develops social impact strategies, builds campaigns and crafts creative content; innovative technology that underpins its services including measurement and training tools; and finally, a host of methodologies that foster participation and help move people to action. Each of these elements work hand in hand to shape and deliver effective and impactful campaigns.
Jeremy Heimans, chief executive officer and co-founder of Purpose said: “By joining the Capgemini Group, we can truly take Purpose to the world — dramatically growing our scale and impact at a crucial moment for so many of the issues we care about. Capgemini Invent, combined with the wider Group’s scale, offers us access to vast technological capacity, unrivaled data and analytics, and a deep understanding of how to change organisations and business models from the inside out. This opens up extraordinary possibilities for the campaigns that we can create and the global organisations that we can advise and support.”
Purpose will continue to operate as a Public Benefit Corporation in pursuit of its mission of advancing a more open, just and habitable world. The parties intend for Purpose to be run independently as previously, and for senior management to remain in place. It will operate within the Capgemini Group under a policy of “Editorial Independence,” ensuring that Purpose retains its own unique and prominent voice and perspective on major global issues.
The transaction is subject to customary conditions precedent.

Nokia Oyj is expected to report a rise in revenue for the first three months of the year, backed by higher sales of 5G equipment, before feeling the effects of supply chain disruption in the current quarter.
The Finnish company, battling with China’s Huawei and Sweden’s Ericsson, is trying to strengthen its 5G slate and looking to deployment by US telecom companies for growth.
Nokia, which will publish earnings on April 30, is expected to report revenue of 5.1 billion euros (US$5.55 billion), up 1.25 percent from a year earlier, according to Refinitiv data based on eight analysts.
Analysts also estimate the company to break even in the quarter compared with an underlying loss of 2 cents per share in the same period last year.
Nokia, which axed its dividend after a profit warning last October, is awaiting the arrival of former executive Pekka Lundmark from energy group Fortum in September who will replace Rajeev Suri.
Both Ericsson and Huawei have posted growth in revenue in the first quarter of the year, helped by strong demand as telecom services help to keep businesses working remotely during the pandemic.
While Ericsson has flagged near-term supply disruptions, Huawei has also faced a political backlash over alleged use of networking equipment to spy for the Chinese government, which the company has denied.
Nokia has been hampered by delays in its 5G system-on-chip (SoC) development, which allows a single chip to carry an entire computer system and should enable it to produce its network technology more cheaply.
China weakness
In the latest contract awards by China Mobile, the world’s largest telecom company, Nokia missed out entirely.
Nokia also didn’t win any 5G contracts from China Unicom and China Telecom, according to media reports.
However, it was not clear if Nokia had chosen to opt out rather than chase business at any price.
“We remain a long-term player in China and our commitment to China remains, but as you know, we have always taken disciplined approach to our business in China, which is focused on profitability as opposed to market share,” Nokia told Reuters in an emailed statement.
Nokia, however, is set to grow this year in North America, its biggest market.
After the completion of a merger, the combined T-Mobile and Sprint is pushing ahead with the rollout of 5G. That bodes well for Nokia – a key supplier to both.
“Samsung historically had 1/3 share at Sprint, and we believe this share may shift more to Nokia as part of a new strategy,” BofA analysts said.
Its other customers, AT&T and Verizon, have also earmarked billions of dollars to deploy 5G.
Nokia shares, which took a beating last year, recovered some of those losses after rumors https://in.reuters.com/article/nokia-shares/nokia-shares-surge-on-report-of-takeover-bid-idINKBN21Y2PA surfaced that it may be a takeover target.
“We must also note, especially given recent M&A rumors, that Nokia’s minimal participation in China 5G markets may increase its attractiveness in the US 5G ‘national champion’ acquisition scenario,” Northland Capital analyst Tim Savageaux wrote in a note. (US$1 = 0.9188 euros)

Big Issue campaign highlights the impact of coronavirus on street vendors- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Big Issue has launched a social creative campaign, #TheBigMissYou, to support its appeal to customers during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Due to the outbreak of the virus, the weekly magazine previously took the decision to protect the safety of its network of news vendors by asking them to stop selling on the streets of the UK.
#TheBigMissYou campaign aims to show Big Issue readers the difficulties street-vendors are currently facing during the Covid-19 crisis, as many rely on selling the magazine as a legitimate form of income as well as benefiting from the positive social interactions and relationships they build with their regular customers.
The campaign therefore encourages supporters of The Big Issue to subscribe or support the title with a one-off support payment through this crisis so the organisation can be there for those that need them now and in the future.
The Big Issue worked alongside the creative consultancy Fox & Hare to deliver the creative.
Zoe Hayward, group marketing & communications director of The Big Issue, said: “It’s been a real pleasure to work with Fox & Hare, so that new and existing readers are able to keep reading and supporting The Big Issue throughout this incredibly tough time.
“The team has delivered a highly impactful campaign that allows us to demonstrate to our customers how challenging it is for vendors in this crisis and how public support for The Big Issue is critical to secure the future of the magazine and will make a real difference to the lives of our vendors around the country.”
People can support The Big Issue by downloading the app, available on Apple Store and Google Play, for weekly downloads of the magazine at £2.99 a copy or via subscriptions, starting from £32.99 for three months.
Supporters can also subscribe at bigissue.com or make a one-off support payment to help The Big Issue through this period.
Copies of the magazine are also available to buy in selected Sainsbury’s stores and online and from 1,400 McColl’s stores and 2,600 Co- op stores.
50% of net proceeds will go to vendors needing their help. The remaining 50% will enable The Big Issue to continue its vital work with vendors now and in the future.

What is the impact of Covid-19 on the DIY industry?- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

It’s been just over three weeks since the UK was put on lockdown to try and slow the coronavirus pandemic. Like me, many of you have probably exhausted all that Netflix has to offer, played every board game in the house and are still eagerly awaiting the arrival of the jigsaw puzzle you ordered two weeks ago.
Surprisingly, seeking out jobs to do around the house feels like it’s becoming an act of desperation, rather than a nuisance. Spending more time within our four walls means that we have the time to get started or even finish off those jobs that have previously been put on hold in favour of well, life?
So, what are the home improvements homeowners are comfortable undertaking themselves and who in the household volunteers their efforts? How are DIY products being purchased and how can home improvement retailers help consumers in their DIY pursuits? In February, before the escalation of the coronavirus outbreak, we interviewed over 500 homebuyers as part of the Opinium Retail Tracker to explore the loved/loathed task of DIY in UK households and to examine how retailers can help homeowners with their DIY pursuits.
DIY, still a man’s world
According to homebuyers, DIY is still very much a male dominated task with 66% of males saying they do the majority of DIY jobs in their household versus 22% of females whose partners are more likely to take the lead (50%). Over a quarter (28%) of 18-24-year old homebuyers are still reliant on their family members to help them out with DIY job; a sign of a waiving interest in DIY amongst young people or just lack of confidence to be developed? We’ll find out over time.
On the other hand, 14% always hire a professional to complete DIY jobs, this incidence increasing with age from 4% of 25-34-year olds to 23% of over 65s. The main reasons those who don’t do DIY personally choose to avoid it are the possible danger surrounding using power tools (15%), not knowing where to start with a task (28%) and a lack of belief in their own DIY abilities (48%).
Half of homeowners said they’ve had a previous DIY project go wrong, 13% of which saying it took a long time to sort out and 6% saying it still hasn’t been resolved – quite understandable as to why many would be put off by a do-it-yourself approach.
Ability and purpose
However, luckily those who undertake the DIY in the household are rated or rate themselves reasonably well for their efforts. Homeowners rate their partners 7.4 on average out of 10 for their DIY abilities, whilst those who do the work themselves are slightly more modest with their rating, an average of 6.6. Enjoyment of DIY jobs is mixed with 53% overall claiming they do enjoy it, a quarter feeling indifferent (23%) whilst almost a fifth saying it’s not something they enjoy doing at all (18%).
The main reasons homebuyers who tend to keep DIY tasks within the household do so is primarily because it’s cheaper (65%), secondly the sense of accomplishment (37%) – particularly among older age groups – and because it provides more control over how the job is done (33%). However, 25-34-year olds – a key first time buyer group – hold a slightly different perspective with 25% claiming it to be something nice to do with their partner (versus 10% overall) and because it’s more sustainable / better for the environment (16% versus 8% overall).
In-store for purchase, online for advice
Overall, purchasing for DIY at home is still very much an in-store mission with 77% preferring to physically visit a store and browse the aisles over buying the items they need online (22%). With that in mind, it’s understandable that B&Q, with over 300 stores nationwide, was deemed the top retailer to visit for DIY projects in the home, followed by Homebase. Among online DIY shoppers, however, Amazon and eBay are particularly popular when buying tools and decorating items.
Despite shopping being predominantly done in-store, online is the main channel for homeowners when seeking out hints and tips for DIY. YouTube is the top source of information overall (predominantly amongst men and those aged 35-44) whilst Google comes in as the second most popular resource, most frequently used by younger age groups. Those aged 55+ are more likely to trust their own knowledge and tend not to seek out external help resources, likely due to experience just learning ‘on the job’ quite literally.
Optimising sales during the coronavirus outbreak
When we interviewed homebuyers over a month ago on this topic, 17% said they were planning on DIY over the Easter holidays with a further 19% saying they might use the holiday as a chance to improve areas of the home. Since then, the coronavirus pandemic has turned normality on its head and we’re spending more time at home than ever before, but what does that mean for DIY activity?
Recently, advice from a number of medical societies urged to the public to stick to necessary household jobs and to avoid any activity which increases the risk of accidents to reduce any additional pressure on the NHS. In a recent study on flexible monthly spending during the coronavirus outbreak we asked consumers whether they’d be spending more or less on DIY / home improvements than usual.
Results were split (25% spending more, 24% spending less) a mixed result which undoubtedly takes into consideration the formal advice communicated to the public and the ease of the tasks in question.
But despite the advice, it’s inevitable with this extra time on our hands that repairs will need to be made and those jobs that have been put off for a while will be top of the to-do list. In-store, as we know, is the dominant shopping channel for the DIY industry. Whilst the bricks and mortar stores are closed for the foreseeable future, retailers will need to ensure they’re providing an ‘in-store experience’ on their websites as much as possible.
Making sure that online services are set up to provide advice and safety tips on tools and materials, offer flexible payment solutions and put in place reasonable delivery and return policies will be key to retailer success. Implementing such initiatives will give consumers the confidence to purchase via an unfamiliar method for this category in unfamiliar times.
