Hackers have launched a wave of cyber-attacks trying to exploit British people working from home, as the coronavirus lockdown forces people to use often unfamiliar computer systems.
The proportion of attacks targeting home workers increased from 12% of malicious email traffic before the UK’s lockdown began in March to more than 60% six weeks later, according to to data from cybersecurity company Darktrace provided to the Guardian.
Attacks specifically aimed at exploiting the chaos wrought by Sars-CoV-2 have been evident since January, when the outbreak started to garner international news headlines.

“>The attacks have increased in sophistication, specifically targeting coronavirus-related anxieties rather than the more usual attempts at financial fraud or extortion.
In early May, Darktrace detected “a large malicious email campaign” against UK businesses that told employees they could choose to be furloughed if they signed up to a specific website.
Other attacks have targeted the tools used by remote workers, including fake requests to reset virtual private network (VPN) accounts, Zoom video conferencing accounts with faked sign-in pages, or accepting an incoming “chat” request from colleagues on supposedly corporate messaging systems.
There has also been an increase in spoofing attacks, with emails purporting to be from a colleague. Darktrace said about a fifth of malicious emails would normally use some form of spoofing, but that this rate has reached up to 60% as attackers exploit the increased separation of workforces.
One spoofing attack featured an unnamed company chief executive supposedly asking workers to donate to his health charity, while others mimic IT support departments asking workers to download new software.
GCHQ, the UK’s cyber-intelligence organisation, has called for people to report attempts at phishing using fraudulent emails as it tries to block malicious websites.
The EU’s foreign affairs wing, the European external action service, has already warned of a proliferation of cyber-attacks and disinformation campaigns related to the pandemic, highlighting efforts thought to be linked to the Russian and Chinese states. The World Health Organization and the US Tempemail Institutes of Health have been targeted.
Darktrace said similar patterns were evident across the world, with increases in home-working attacks evident as soon as different countries entered their lockdowns, with Italian workers targeted before those in the UK and the US.
Max Heinemeyer, director of threat hunting at Darktrace, said attackers often reuse the same techniques on many different companies, looking for back doors in networks that may have inadvertently been left open.
“It can be very easy and very quick to capitalise on vulnerabilities like this,” he said, adding that attackers such as the APT41 operation, believed to have been carried out by Chinese state-backed actors, “sprayed and prayed”, attacking large numbers of targets.
The warning came after British airline easyJet was forced to reveal that a hack had exposed the personal information, including travel records, of 9 million people over a period of more than four months.

A person with knowledge of the probe into the easyJet attack said investigators believed financial fraud was not the main motivation for the attack. Reuters reported that investigators believed the easyJet hack may have been carried out by the Chinese state.
Security experts have seen a high volume of attacks since January by actors believed to be backed by China. Another trend has been the targeting of hotel and travel companies in what is believed to be an effort to gather movement information for large numbers of people.

NTT Ltd bets big on innovations; sees huge growth coming from India- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Fueled by a fast rising market for data consumption, NTT Ltd is bullish on huge growth coming in from multiple quarters. This can be seen from the launch of Global Data Centers division of NTT Ltd. in India, led by industry veteran, Sharad Sanghi.
Explains Sharad Sanghi, CEO, Global Data Centers and Cloud Infrastructure (India) at NTT Ltd, “We see growth coming in from multiple areas. Almost every industry is going to the cloud. There is also growth coming in due to compliance requirements set by regulatory authorities such as RBI that mandate that personal data of Indian citizens must be stored on local servers in the country. We continue to see huge growth coming in from global hyperscalers, born in the cloud firms, OTT players and manufacturing firms upgrading their critical applications such as SAP. Other sectors such as banking and finance are refreshing their technology infrastructure, while sectors like IT/ITeS and e-commerce are good growth areas for us.” NTT is also betting heavily on government projects. The company has already been empanelled for Maharashtra Government and Central Government cloud-based requirements.
Betting big on innovations
NTT through its acquisition of Netmagic, has a series of innovations, that have helped it provide far greater value to its customers. This include innovations such as SimpliHANA (a SAP certified hosting solution), cloud comparison engine (ability to compare costs across multiple clouds for customers), cloud optimization engine (customers can use this service to better optimize their infrastructure. For example, they can turn off virtual machines that are not in use), Cloud Connect Service and Solution Insights.
Explains Sharad Sanghi, “Many of these innovations have been developed at our Pune or Bangalore centers. For example, Solution Insight is a platform for holistic visibility and control of an increasingly sprawling and disparate ICT infrastructure for an enterprise. It provides a single pane of glass into understanding the state, performance and events occurring within and around the infrastructure and provides controls to respond accordingly.”
In a multi-cloud environment, this can be the game changer, as Solution Insight can manage a hybrid portfolio of cloud infrastructure, provided by the service provider or a third party provider (such as AWS or Microsoft Azure). Customers can also allocate their cloud spend back to applications and departments and monitor the cost on the go against the budget set by the budget owners.
To ensure a greener world, NTT has heavily invested in renewable energy projects. “We are committed to generating our power requirements through renewable energy. We have already setup a solar plant in Solapur, and all our data centers in Maharashtra will be majorly powered by solar, with the rest being provided by wind energy. The goal is to take this across the country in a phased manner.”

India’s huge outsourcing industry struggles with work-from-home scenario – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

As the coronavirus pandemic pushes India into lockdown, the call centres and IT services firms that function as the world’s back office are struggling to piece together work-from-home solutions and other business-continuity plans.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday ordered 1.3 billion Indians to stay at home for 21 days to stem the spread of COVID-19, following earlier lockdown orders in many Indian cities and states. As of Tuesday, India had reported over 500 cases of the virus and nine deaths.
Many of the companies that provide business services such as call centres, information technology services and business process automation were not prepared for work-for-home arrangements, according to interviews with more than a dozen employees of several companies.
That raises questions about whether one of India’s showpiece industries can function smoothly amid the coronavirus crisis.
“The industry has been scrambling to set up its own business continuity plan,” said R. Chandrashekhar, a retired federal government official and a former president of India’s IT services lobby group, NASSCOM.
In the southern tech hub of Bengaluru, an employee working at a JPMorgan call centre said that until last Friday, her managers had repeatedly declined staffers’ pleas to work from home.
“Even if I am infected with the virus, I know the death rate for young people isn’t very high, but I am very very scared that I might transfer it to family,” she said on condition of anonymity, as she was not authorised to speak to the media.
After a state government order, JPMorgan on Sunday asked its Bengaluru staff to “stay at home until further notice,” according to a message to employees seen by Reuters.
In some cases, companies must seek client permission before allowing employees to work on sensitive projects outside the office, a senior human resources executive at a top Indian IT firm said of working remotely.
“These days the challenge is not really the technology, the challenge is the regulations, and, in case something goes wrong, who’s going to take the responsibility,” the person said on condition of anonymity.
Software services firms, led by Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys , gained prominence by giving Western clients low-cost solutions to routine computer problems. Over time, they assumed a major role at many global companies.
Three employees of midsize IT services firm Mphasis in the western Indian city of Pune said they were all being asked to come to the office until last Friday, even as some expressed concerns about working in close proximity with roughly 90 other people.
Maharashtra state, where Pune is located, had imposed restrictions on private company employees going to offices in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. But it made exemptions for essential services including some IT companies.
During the past week, security guards barred employees from venturing outside one of the Mphasis offices in Pune to avoid attracting the police, fearing a forced shutdown, two employees said, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak to the media.
One said a human resources executive told him not to wear a mask as it would “panic people who come to work”.
As Maharashtra enforced a curfew starting Monday, some Mphasis employees were being asked to remain home this week, even though they lacked equipment such as laptops, the employees said.
Mphasis said in a statement that not all of its staff were working remotely. But the company said it was speaking with clients and trying to enable as many people as possible to work from home while ensuring employee safety.
An employee of French tele-services provider Teleperformance on the outskirts of Delhi said his company had been reluctant to let staff work from home.
But he said employees were finally told Sunday the company would begin installing corporate desktop computers at their homes after a wider lockdown in several cities.
JPMorgan and Teleperformace did not respond to requests for comment.
Some have been able to make a temporary and quick transition to the work-from-home scenario.
Qualcomm, the world’s biggest supplier of “modem” chips that connect mobile phones and other devices to wireless data networks, said about 90 percent of its workforce in India was able log in to work-from-home since the lockdown started in the country.
“I can tell you that in the last 24 hours 90 percent of Qualcomm’s workforce in India logged in, indicating that our employees have been pivoted well to working from home”, a Qualcomm spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.
India’s home ministry, in guidelines issued on Tuesday, advised states to exempt essential IT and IT-enabled services from the national lockdown.
NASSCOM, the lobbying group, said several states had listed IT and e-commerce among essential services that are exempt.

Leaked slide shows huge performance boosts of Nvidia’s RTX 2070/2080 Super mobile GPUs – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: Fans of gaming laptops could soon have something to celebrate, with Nvidia’s RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 Super mobile cards seemingly on their way and offering a significant boost over their non-Super counterparts.
The news comes from PCGamesN, which got its hands on a confidential Nvidia slide that compares the performance of the RTX 2080 Super and 2070 Super laptop graphics cards against the rest of the company’s current mobile GPUs.
The slide comes from an anonymous source, and, assuming it’s genuine, shows the 2070 Super is 50 percent faster than the standard RTX 2070 and around 5.8 times faster than the GTX 1050 with DLSS turned on.

The chart also shows the RTX 2080 Super is about 50 percent faster than the RTX 2070 Super and roughly 6.7 times faster than a 1050. There’s no standard RTX 2080 mobile card on the chart, which PCGamesN theorizes is due to it offering almost identical performance to the 2070 Super that uses the same TU104 GPU.
The chart’s performance levels are taken from three games: Control, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and Deliver Us The Moon, all of which were running at 1080p with the setting at max. We also see that the benchmarks were run on an unreleased 10th-gen Intel Comet Lake-H CPU (reportedly an i7) along with 16GB of RAM and Windows 10.
The slide is reportedly part of a release kit for laptop manufacturers, so it looks as if machines packing these Super cards will arrive soon, possibly as early as this month.

Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud sees huge adoption in India- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article

Oracle, which recently opened enterprise-grade Gen 2 Cloud region for its existing and new customers in India, is witnessing a huge demand from the Indian businesses – from verticals like education, jewellery, footwear, banking/finance — to join its Autonomous Database Cloud services. The Generation 2 enterprise cloud supports all legacy workloads while delivering modern cloud development tools, so enterprises in India can bring forward their past as they build their future.
India currently is the sixth largest market for Oracle globally in the data management space.
“We’re the No 1 player in India with over 60 per cent market share in the database segment. The initial response for Oracle Autonomous Database has been fantastic from customers and we are very excited about our growth prospects here,” Chema Aramburu, VP-Autonomous Database Cloud, Oracle JAPAC, told IANS in an interaction.
Currently, most of a company’s data is locked in separate, often duplicative silos, even though the company’s different business units are all seeking the same or similar insights.
“What if the organisation could create an internal data exchange and bring the entirety of this valuable resource together so that they can see the value that’s hiding in their data and use it in new and innovative ways?” asked Aramburu.
“What if, at the same time, they can bring the transaction costs of getting the data different users want, into the shape they need it, down to near zero?”
This is the power Oracle Autonomous Database gives to businesses — self-driving, self-securing and self-repairing Cloud services.
“The JAPAC region (Japan and Asia-Pacific) has been the home for a great number of our early adopters, several of whom are from India, and are already seeing tremendous business value,” said the Oracle executive.
Armed with deeper and more meaningful insights, these customers have been able to significantly improve and fast-track business decisions, introduce new products/services to market quicker and create a smarter workforce.
Oracle Autonomous Linux is another important step towards bringing the autonomous enterprise to life.
“We have made the database and now the operating system autonomous, and included autonomous capabilities in our Oracle Gen 2 Cloud Infrastructure,” informed Aramburu.
In India, businesses are looking at a secure cloud environment – be it on-premise or on cloud.
Bullish on its India operations, the Cloud major in October last year announced the availability of its first Gen 2 Cloud region in Mumbai, with plans to open another Gen 2 region in Hyderabad next year.
“From our vantage point, Oracle Gen 2 Cloud has the potential to play a critical role. It is the only true enterprise-grade cloud built from the ground-up to meet the needs of mission-critical applications, and give unprecedented performance, speed and security, along with low and predictable pricing,” elaborated Aramburu.
It also supports all legacy workloads and cloud native development, so enterprises can bring forward their past as they build their future.
Sharda University, one of India’s leading higher education institutions, wanted to elevate the learning experience for students, improve learning outcomes and also make faculty training more effective.
Traditional data management models didn’t help unearth actionable insights on time.
By using Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse along with Oracle Analytics Cloud, the university has been able to extract critical business insights much faster and expedite the insights-to-decision making cycle.
“The university has already started to witness improved student engagement and performance,” said Aramburu.
Federal Bank aimed to improve the efficacy of its ATMs as well as the overall experience of customers.
The bank used Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse and Oracle Analytics Cloud to focus on data from this area and in less than four weeks, was able to create an intuitive, user-friendly solution that empowered their senior leaders with actionable insights for faster, better decision making.
“Federal Bank is now able to determine customer footfalls and ATM transaction behaviours better and faster, thereby improving their bottom line,” informed Aramburu.
Today, More than 15,000 customers in India are using Oracle to manage their mission-critical workloads.

Tata Communications to launch 100G media backbone for tapping huge opportunities in eSports- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Tata Communications will launch a 100G media backbone to meet the growing bandwidth demands of the industry. The backbone – delivered in collaboration with Net Insight – will enable broadcasters, sports organisations, OTT companies and eSports businesses to offer their audiences worldwide more immersive viewing and gaming experiences and transform how they operate through full remote production.
The new backbone will help accelerate industry adoption of ultra-high definition (UHD) 4K video, which requires 12Gbps of bandwidth when uncompressed – four times more than HD video. With 100G, broadcasters and eSports companies, for example, are able to offer viewers and gamers the ultra-immersive 4K viewing experiences they crave without having to worry about running out of bandwidth.
Tata Communications’ 100G backbone will also help overcome the technical complexities of eSports, with each event involving multiple cameras, cutaways, real-time reactions, commentary and intensive editing. As the global audience of eSports is expected to reach 645 million by 2022, the bandwidth boost of 100G will bring eSports fans worldwide seamless and highly engaging gaming experiences.
At major sports events, the new infrastructure will have the capacity to support up to 50 raw video feeds and the delivery of unilateral, localised feeds by different rightsholders for their regions. The combination of the 100G backbone and workflows on Tata Communications’ media ecosystem will help more and more broadcasters and rightsholders switch to full remote production to bring live events to audiences across the globe, boosting efficiencies and generating cost savings. The 100G capacity lowers the barriers for global sports organisations to move from satellite-based content distribution to fibre across entire continents too.
The new backbone, being built using Net Insight’s next-generation WAN transport platform Nimbra 1060, will underpin Tata Communications’ global end-to-end managed Video Connect network.
“We’re proud to launch this game-changing 100G backbone, and excited about the new opportunities that the powerful combination of Tata Communications and Net Insight’s capabilities offer to broadcasters, sports organisations, OTT players and eSports businesses,” said Dhaval Ponda, Associate Vice President, Media and Entertainment, Tata Communications. “Viewers, sports fans and gamers increasingly expect immersive, high-quality content – delivered live from the other side of the world or on demand – on a range of different media platforms. This 100G backbone and our managed video services will help our customers innovate with agility and become more competitive.”
Net Insight’s Nimbra 1060 is a new terabit WAN transport platform that enables the delivery of IP-based media services across global media networks without the complex traffic engineering typically associated with high-quality media transport. Designed for all-IP services and all-IP networks, it guarantees quality for the most demanding live media events while providing agility through automated real-time provisioning.
“The fact that Tata Communications is delivering its new global 100G backbone using the Nimbra platform is yet another testament to the scalable and innovative nature of our technology,” said Ulrik Rohne, Vice President, Media Networks, Net Insight. “The merger of media and IT is putting increased pressure on cost-efficiency and workflow automation in media networks. The Nimbra platform is designed to meet these new demands and offer unparalleled flexibility and excel in the highest quality of service and lowest total cost of ownership.”

A huge database of Facebook users’ phone numbers found online – gpgmail

Hundreds of millions of phone numbers linked to Facebook accounts have been found online.

The exposed server contained over 419 million records over several databases on users across geographies, including 133 million records on U.S.-based Facebook users, 18 million records of users in the U.K., and another with more than 50 million records on users in Vietnam.

But because the server wasn’t protected with a password, anyone could find and access the database.

Each record contained a user’s unique Facebook ID and the phone number listed on the account. A user’s Facebook ID is typically a long, unique and public number associated with their account, which can be easily used to discern an account’s username.

But phone numbers have not been public in more than a year since Facebook restricted access to users’ phone numbers.

gpgmail verified a number of records in the database by matching a known Facebook user’s phone number against their listed Facebook ID. We also checked other records by matching phone numbers against Facebook’s own password reset feature, which can be used to partially reveal a user’s phone number linked to their account.

Some of the records also had the user’s name, gender, and location by country.

A redacted set of records from the U.K. database. The “44” indicates +44, the U.K.’s country code and the “7” indicates a cell phone number.

This is the latest security lapse involving Facebook data after a string of incidents since the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which saw more than 80 million profiles scraped to help identify swing voters in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Since then the company has seen several high-profile scraping incidents, including at Instagram, which recently admitted to having profile data scraped in bulk.

This latest incident exposed millions of users’ phone numbers just from their Facebook IDs, putting them at risk of spam calls and SIM-swapping attacks, which relies on tricking cell carriers into giving a person’s phone number to an attacker. With someone else’s phone number, an attacker can force-reset the password on any internet account associated with that number.

Security researcher Sanyam Jain found the database and contacted gpgmail after he was unable to find the owner. After a review of the data, neither could we. But after we contacted the web host, the database was pulled offline.

Jain said he found profiles with phone numbers associated with several celebrities.

Facebook spokesperson Jay Nancarrow said the data had been scraped before Facebook cut off access to user phone numbers.

“This dataset is old and appears to have information obtained before we made changes last year to remove people’s ability to find others using their phone numbers,” the spokesperson said. “The dataset has been taken down and we have seen no evidence that Facebook accounts were compromised.”

But questions remain as to exactly who scraped the data, when it was scraped from Facebook, and why.

Facebook has long restricted developers access to user phone numbers. The company also made it more difficult to search for friends’ phone numbers. But the data appeared to be loaded into the exposed database at the end of last month — though that doesn’t necessarily mean the data is new.

This latest data exposure is the most recent example of data stored online and publicly without a password. Although often tied to human error rather than a malicious breach, data exposures nevertheless represent an emerging security problem.

In recent months, financial giant First American left data exposed, as did MoviePass and the Senate Democrats.

Watch SpaceX launch a huge satellite using a twice-flown Falcon 9 live – gpgmail

SpaceX is launching a Falcon 9 rocket with a huge communications satellite as payload, with launch window opening at 6:53 PM EDT (3:53 PM PDT) today. The window extends to 8:21 PM EDT, so there’s a possibility of a launch anytime in between there, should weather conditions or anything impact the ability to launch. The livestream above should begin around 15 minutes prior to the opening of the launch window.

The launch will use a twice-flown Falcon 9 first stage booster, which previously flew in missions in July and November of last year. This will be the last mission for the rocket, however, since the launch is configured in ‘expendable’ mode, which means that there’s no attempt to return it to Earth for a soft landing.

That’s because Amos-17, the satellite SpaceX is launching on behalf of Israeli company Spacecomm for this mission, weighs over 14,000 lbs – meaning it needs all the fuel on board the Falcon 9 to achieve its target orbit, leaving none remaining for an attempted controlled decent.

The launch will, however, include an attempted recovery of the nose cone fairing that protects the satellite during the ascent phase. SpaceX has managed to catch the fairing once before during a launch, using a ship at sea called ‘Ms. Tree’ which was fitted with an extra large net. Recovering the fairing is a big cost savings for SpaceX, as is recovering the Falcon 9 booster, all of which contributes to SpaceX’s goal of achieving 100 percent reusable launch capabilities.
