Google Earth Finally Available on Browsers Other than Chrome – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from The Verge

Google is releasing its web-based version of Google Earth on browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera today, reports The Verge.
Google released Earth for web integration in 2017, killing its desktop app while it was at it. Earth launched on the web with the Chrome-only Native Client, or NaCl, as there wasn’t a standard that supported what it wanted to do becoming of the many Chrome-only websites from Google. Despite this Google says “…we are big supporters of open web standards.”
NaCl, perhaps a pun on salt, allows Google to bring native C++ app code and run it directly on Chrome browsers – giving users all the performance capabilities they’ll need to zoom in and out of locations on a virtual globe. Google has spent the last three years on emerging web standards like WebAssembly, which allows other developers to bring native code to the web.
Over the past 6 months, Google has been beta testing a switch from its NaCl implementation to WebAssembly – this testing has been successful, leading to today’s launch of Google Earth on Edge, Firefox and Opera.
Conspicuous by its absence is Safari, but the Google Earth team notes in a blog post that they still “have some work to do,” and they would be “polishing our experience across all these browsers and adding support for Safari.”
Google has stated that they would add Earth support for Safari once Apple adds “better support for WebGL2” in the browser.
Check out Google Earth on Edge, Firefox and Opera here.

Google wants to Work with Huawei despite US China Trade Ban – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Google is reportedly eager to work with Huawei again, after telling German news publication DPA that it has applied for licensing with the US government.
This comes after US president, Donald Trump claimed that Huawei is a danger to American national security in May 2019. Trump then went on to sign an executive order allowing his government to block any trade between the US and a foreign organisation deemed as a threat — i.e. Huawei – even though the company has denied that its products could be used for espionage.
“Google is prohibited from working with Huawei on new device models or providing Google’s apps including Gmail, Maps, YouTube, the Play Store and others for preload or download on these devices,” says Google.
Despite the ban, a number of American companies have been permitted to work with Huawei and other Chinese companies under strict licensing and regulations from the US government.
“We have continued to work with Huawei, in compliance with government regulations, to provide security updates and updates to Google’s apps and services on existing devices, and we will continue to do so as long as it is permitted.”
Since news of the ban broke, Huawei has been working relentlessly to replace Google Mobile Services which runs on all Android devices and is the core system of support behind both the Google Play Store and a number of security features.
Beginning in March 2020, all newly launched Huawei devices will now operate Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and users will be able to access apps through the Huawei AppGallery.
Although, “due to government restrictions, Google’s apps and services are not available for preload or sideload on new Huawei devices,” says Google.

Google asks US for license to let Huawei use its services – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: It’s not just Huawei that wants Google’s apps and services back on its latest devices; the search giant has the same goal, and it’s asking the US government for a license to deal with the Chinese giant once again.
After Huawei was added to an entity list last May that prevented it from doing business with US companies without a license, the firm was unable to use Google Mobile Services (GMS), such as the Play Store, Gmail, Maps, and YouTube, on its latest phones and tablets.
According to German wire service Deutsche Press Agentu, Vice President of Android and Google Play Sameer Samat confirmed that Google has applied to the US government for a license to resume working with Huawei.
Only two Huawei devices have launched without GMS: The Mate 30 series and Mate XS foldable, neither of which are available in the US. The company said if Google is granted a license, its newest phones would be updated with Google’s suite of apps and services.
While the US government continues to battle against Huawei—the US Department of Justice recently charged it with conspiracy to steal trade secrets—it did grant Microsoft a similar license late last year, allowing Windows 10 to ship on Huawei’s latest laptops, including the MateBook 13 and updated Matebook X Pro. As such, Google will likely be feeling optimistic about its chances.

Google recently warned users of new Huawei devices not to sideload its apps, explaining that doing so brought a high risk of installing an app that had been tampered with in ways that could compromise security.
Huawei has developed its own alternative to the Play Store called the AppGallery, but it lacks some of the world’s most popular apps, including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Uber, Netflix, Amazon, and Spotify.
Earlier this month, Huawei told the US to look at its own history of spying on phone networks before accusing it of doing the same thing.

Can I move my data to the EU before Google shifts it to the US? | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Given Google’s recent announcement about moving UK users’ data to US jurisdiction, what’s the best way to migrate to EU-based services? Can you download+upload or crossload your Gmail to another service? And are we in for the same treatment by Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram et al? Sean

Last week Google notified users that “because the UK is leaving the EU, we’ve updated our terms so that a United States-based company, Google LLC, is now your service provider instead of Google Ireland Limited. We’ve also changed our privacy policy to make Google LLC the data controller responsible for your information and for complying with applicable privacy laws.”
This makes sense. There is no reason why two countries that are not in the EU should store data in an EU country. It would be much better, of course, if Google stored UK data in the UK. However, now we are just one of dozens of small countries, it may be hard to justify the cost.
Other online service providers may well make the same decision, after weighing the financial, commercial and legal costs of storing UK users’ data locally.
At the moment, it should be a moot point. UK data is covered by the Data Protection Act 2018, which is the UK’s version of the EU’s GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). One problem is that the UK may lower its data protection and privacy standards to US levels, along with our food and other standards, as part of a US trade deal. Another problem is that even if we maintain EU-level regulations, there is no guarantee that the US will observe them. Given Trump’s actions since taking the US presidency, it is hard to imagine that the situation has improved since Edward Snowden shocked us with his revelations.
Where is your data?

Until recently, Google stored UK user data in its Irish data centres such as this one in the Grange Castle business park just outside Dublin. Photograph: Patrick Bolger/The Guardian
It is hard to be sure where your data is stored because service providers can and do rent space in other people’s hyperscale data centres. However, as far as I know, only Amazon (AWS) and Microsoft have their own server farms in the UK. Google’s are in Dublin in Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and Finland. Facebook’s are in Dublin and Denmark. Microsoft has a site in Dublin, of course, but it also has data centres in London, Durham and Cardiff.
As traffic grows, the major online service providers keep opening new data centres to be closer to their customers. However, outside the US and the EU, coverage can be sparse. Google, for example, has only three data centres – in Chile, Singapore and Taiwan – for the whole southern hemisphere. It doesn’t have any in Africa, or in Brazil, China, India, Russia or Japan.
At the moment, Microsoft is the only major service provider to host UK data in the UK. Presumably, this is a commercial decision based on selling Office 365 and Azure cloud services to the British government and businesses that actually care where their data is stored. However, some less popular Office services are served from overseas. Yammer, Planner and Forms, for example, are still served from Ireland and the Netherlands.
Consumers who use Microsoft’s Outlook.com webmail do not have any control over where their data is stored. As a matter of principle, Microsoft stores it for best performance. Local storage is therefore the most likely option but that could depend on network speeds and whether there is enough local storage available.
Again, it should be a moot point. Microsoft has been pushing for higher data protection standards in the US, and it responded to the GDPR by “levelling up”. That is to say, it applies GDPR standards for all users in all countries, even if the local regulations allow lower standards.
Switching Tempemail services

GMX is a German email service that is free and can send encrypted emails. Photograph: Jack Schofield/The Guardian
If you are determined to switch away from Gmail, then Microsoft’s Outlook.com is an option. Both services offer 15GB of free storage and both will import your old emails, which makes for an easy transition. (Microsoft also offers an extra 5GB of storage in OneDrive, which Google doesn’t.) Both services let you reply from your “old” email address if necessary.
However, getting everyone to use a new address takes time and I find Outlook.com’s infinite scrolling pages and broken search/move routine a horrible experience in a browser. If you get a significant amount of email, I would only recommend it with a decent Tempemail program such as Microsoft Outlook (the Office program), eM Client, Mailbird or whatever. Fortunately, the smartphone and Windows 10 apps, which provide a different view of your webmail, are fine.
You could also consider GMX.com, the English-language version of the German email service, GMX.net (from Global Mail eXchange). It is a free service that can send encrypted emails and it includes three somewhat primitive office apps. GMX used to have a very limited amount of storage but now offers 65GB – space for “about half a million emails”, the company says. The idea is to use GMX’s Mail Collector to pick up Tempemail from your other accounts and consolidate it in one place.
It is a couple of decades since I last used GMX but it was very easy to open an account and it sent emails without any problems.
I have mentioned some other alternatives – FastMail and ProtonMail – before. FastMail is a good, independent email service with 24/7 support at reasonable prices: $3 per month with 2GB of storage and $5 per month with 30GB. While the company is Australian, its servers are in Amsterdam and New York, so your data should be inside the EU. Fastmail encrypts the email on its servers and it supports YubiKey access for extra security.
ProtonMail is an encrypted GDPR-compliant privacy-focused email service based in Switzerland, which has high data protection standards. Its free service only offers 0.5GB of storage, which isn’t viable for many users. Its Plus plan with 5GB of storage costs €5 per month or €48 per year.
Other data

Deleting the app off your phone isn’t enough, you have to delete your account, too. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian
You cannot do anything about where Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram et al store your data. These are all proprietary services and they can do whatever they like. If you do not want them to store your data in the US, you will have to download whatever you need (if that’s possible) then delete your accounts.
The same thing is true of most business services until they have grown big enough to start opening data centres overseas, such as Adobe.
However, you do have a choice of online storage services or “cloud drives”, where the technologies are basically interchangeable. I covered some of these services in an earlier answer: Where’s the cheapest place to store 500GB of data online?
If you fancy the Swiss option, pCloud will store 500GB of data for £47.88 per year or 2TB for £95.88 per year. It will also store 2TB for a lifetime for a one-off payment of £350. The assumption is that disk space will keep getting cheaper until the cost of storing 2TB is irrelevant.
When I got my first 10MB hard drive in the early 1980s, disk space cost about $500,000 per gigabyte, so 2TB would have cost a cool $1bn. Today, you can buy 2TB for £50. Sobering thought.

Google to invest over US$10bn in 2020 on US data centers, offices – Finance – Cloud – Hardware – Networking- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Alphabet Inc’s Google said on Wednesday it would invest more than US$10 billion in offices and data centers across the United States this year.
The company added that the new investments will focus on 11 states including Massachusetts, New York and Ohio.
“These investments will create thousands of jobs – including roles within Google, construction jobs in data centers and renewable energy facilities, and opportunities in local businesses in surrounding towns and communities,” Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said in a blog post.
Last year, the company said it would spend over US$13 billion on data centers and offices in the United States in 2019.
The tech giant’s total costs and expenses surged about 19 percent at US$36.81 billion for the recently reported fourth quarter ended Dec. 31.

Google will invest over $10 billion on US offices and data centers in 2020 – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: Google plans to invest more than $10 billion in data centers and offices across the US in 2020, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed on Wednesday. The expenditure will further deepen Google’s roots in America and lead to the creation of more jobs, too.
Pichai said Google has a presence in more than half of the states in the US but will focus its new investments in 11 states including Georgia, Colorado, Nebraska, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Washington, Texas and California.
Collectively, the investments will create thousands of jobs including gigs for construction workers, new opportunities for local businesses and roles within Google. In Atlanta, for example, Google aims to bring in new engineering teams and in Ohio, a new data center will open. Google’s Hudson Square campus is also expected to open this year in New York City, allowing the company to double its local workforce by 2028.

Parent company Alphabet said in its most recent earnings report that it had 118,899 employees at the end of 2019. Expenses for the quarter checked in at $36.81 billion.
Google previously announced plans to open a new office in Rochester, Minnesota, and an operations center in northwest Mississippi.
The contribution builds on the $13 billion the search giant pumped into local communities last year. According to a report from Progressive Policy Institute, Alphabet was the largest investor in the US in 2019.

Google Advises Android Developers to Encrypt App Data On Device – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Google today published a blog post recommending mobile app developers to encrypt data that their apps generate on the users’ devices, especially when they use unprotected external storage that’s prone to hijacking.
Moreover, considering that there are not many reference frameworks available for the same, Google also advised using an easy-to-implement security library available as part of its Jetpack software suite.
The open-sourced Jetpack Security (aka JetSec) library lets Android app developers easily read and write encrypted files by following best security practices, including storing cryptographic keys and protecting files that may contain sensitive data, API keys, OAuth tokens.
To give a bit of context, Android offers developers two different ways to save app data. The first one is app-specific storage, also known as internal storage, where the files are stored in a sandboxed folder meant for a specific app’s use and inaccessible to other apps on the same device.

The other is shared storage, also known as external storage, which sits outside the sandbox protection and is often used to store media and document files.
However, it has been found that the majority of the apps use external storage to store sensitive and private data on users and don’t take adequate measures to protect it from other apps, allowing attackers to steal photos and videos, and tamper files (called “Media File Jacking”).
The consequences of the same were demonstrated two years back with the “man-in-the-disk” attacks that make it possible for attackers to compromise an app by manipulating certain data being exchanged between it and the external storage.
Another research demonstrated a side-channel attack using which attackers can secretly take pictures and record videos — even when they don’t have specific device permissions to do so, but only by leveraging access to the device’s external storage.
To prevent such attacks, Android 10 ships with a feature called ‘Scoped Storage‘ that sandboxes each app’s data in the external storage as well, thereby limiting apps from accessing data saved by other apps on your device. But JetSec library takes it one step further by offering an easy-to-use solution to encrypt data for an extra level of protection.

“If your app uses shared storage, you should encrypt the data,” the company outlined. “In the app home directory, your app should encrypt data if your app handles sensitive information including but not limited to personally identifiable information (PII), health records, financial details, or enterprise data.”
What’s more, Google is also recommending that app developers should combine encryption with biometric information for added security and privacy.
The Jetpack Security library was originally previewed last May at its annual developer conference. It comes as part of an expansion of Android Jetpack, a collection of Android software components that helps developers follow best practices and design high-quality apps.

Insane Hack Lets You Play Google Stadia on Android Without Controller – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A Reddit user wrote a workaround for Google Stadia’s requirement of having a controller to play its games on smartphones.
Calling it TouchStadia, user SmashShock created a JavaScript plugin to enable touch controls – and an overlay – to function with Stadia on an Android phone – with nothing else required.
The Reddit thread was picked up by Android Central over the weekend, reports The Verge.
The feature known as TouchStadia adds an on-screen controller overlay when playing games using a touchscreen device, such as a smartphone. This overlay mimics the set-up of the Stadia controller.
TouchStadia works by using a JavaScript snippet, a small sequence of code, that you put directly into Chrome while running Stadia in desktop mode on your Android device.
Unless the workaround is blocked by Google in the next few weeks, this will allow Stadia subscribers to play their games directly on their phones without the controller as if it was natively included on the platform.
If you’re a Stadia user who forgets your controller at home or simply wishes to play without it as you’re on the go, this workaround seems like a no-brainer. Especially with how quick and easy the installation and gameplay seem to be. It brings into question why something so easy to implement – by a single developer at home over a few weeks – wasn’t already added to Stadia by billion-dollar mega-corporation Google.
The user has included the JavaScript code, and step by step instructions on GitHub, as well as a video showing the workaround function perfectly in real-time playing Destiny 2 on Android.
With the Stadia’s lukewarm reception after its conflicted launch, perhaps this is what defibrillates its slow-pulsing heart and lurches it forward into the mainstream market.

Google warns against sideloading its apps on new Huawei devices – Blog – 10 minute

In context: The US government’s battle with Huawei isn’t showing signs of abating. As such, Google has published an article that explains how the situation affects the Chinese manufacturer’s devices and its services. With Google’s apps not available on new Huawei phones and tablets, the company is advising people not to sideload the likes of Gmail, YouTube, and Maps.
Back in May last year, Huawei was added to an entity list that essentially prevents US companies from doing business with the firm. It means Huawei models launched after May 16, 2019, aren’t certified to run the Play Store or Google’s suite of apps.
Google’s Android and Play Legal Director, Tristan Ostrowski, writes that the search giant has received several “questions about new Huawei devices,” particularly when it comes to sideloading its apps. The company advises against this practice, warning that there’s a “high risk of installing an app that has been altered or tampered with in ways that can compromise user security.”

The Mate 30 series: no Google apps and no components that originate from America
Additionally, Google warns that the apps will not reliably work as it does “not allow these services to run on uncertified devices where security may be compromised.”
Ostrowski confirms that Google continues to support Huawei devices sold before it was added to the entity list. These phones and tablets will continue to receive security updates along with updates to Google’s apps and services “as long as it is permitted.”
To find out if your Android device has been certified under Google Play and Protect, open the Google Play Store, tap ‘Menu’ and go to ‘Settings.’ You will see if your device is certified under “Play Protect certification” in the ‘About’ section.
Earlier this month, Huawei told the US to look at its own history of spying on phone networks before accusing it of doing the same thing. Additionally, the US Department of Justice charged the company with conspiracy to steal trade secrets.
