Monash Uni infosec staff find gaping security hole in Palo Alto Networks gear – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Palo Alto Networks has issued patches for a critical authentication bypass in several of its enterprise security products that was reported to the security vendor by two Monash University infosec staff.
The flaw, discovered by cybersecurity systems analyst Salman Khan and systems engineer Cameron Duck at Monash University, rates 10 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerabilities Scoring System (CVSS) version 3, and is easy to exploit with no user interaction required.
“When Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) authentication is enabled and the ‘Validate Identity Provider Certificate’ option is disabled (unchecked), improper verification of signatures in PAN-OS SAML authentication enables an unauthenticated network-based attacker to access protected resources,” the security vendor wrote in its advisory.
Multiple versions of the Palo Alto’s PAN-OS running on the company’s firewall, gateway, virtual private networking and access products are affected by the flaw.
Upgrading to PAN-OS versions 8.1.15, 9.0.9 and 9.1.3 fixes the authentication bypass vulnerability.
The United States government cyber command advised users to patch all their Palo Alto Networks devices immediately, warning that overseas nation-state sponsored hackers would likely try to exploit the vulnerability.

Please patch all devices affected by CVE-2020-2021 immediately, especially if SAML is in use. Foreign APTs will likely attempt exploit soon. We appreciate @PaloAltoNtwks’ proactive response to this vulnerability.

— USCYBERCOM Cybersecurity Alert (@CNMF_CyberAlert) June 29, 2020
If it’s not possible to immediately patch against the vulnerability, Palo Alto Networks said configuring the SAML authentication with a Certificate Authority (CA) Identity Provider Certificate, along with enabling validation of the credential, can be used as a complete mitigation for the vulnerability.
If SAML is not used for authentication, the bypass bug can’t be exploited, Palo Alto Networks said.
For now, the security vendor is not aware of any attempts at exploiting the vulnerability.
Attempts at exploiting the vulnerability can be logged by systems, but Palo Alto Networks said it can be difficult to distinguish between valid and malicious logins or sessions.
Unusual user names or source internet protocol addresses found in system logs are indicators of compromise, Palo Alto Networks warned.

UK telcos told to stockpile Huawei gear – Networking – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

British security officials have told UK telecom operators to ensure they have adequate stockpiles of Huawei equipment due to fears that new US sanctions will disrupt the Chinese firm’s ability to maintain critical supplies, according to a letter.
Britain granted Huawei a limited role in its future 5G networks in January, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson has since come under renewed pressure from Washington and some lawmakers in his own party who say the company’s equipment is a security risk. Huawei has repeatedly denied the allegations.
Officials at the Tempemail Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) are now studying the impact of US measures announced in May, which are intended to restrict Huawei’s ability to source the advanced microchips needed to produce its 5G equipment and flagship smartphones.
Senior NCSC officials wrote to operators including Britain’s BT Group and Vodafone last week, said three people familiar with the matter, telling them to maintain adequate supplies of spare parts from all manufacturers.
But the letter also emphasised the increased risk to Huawei’s equipment and its future ability to provide updates for those products in the face of US pressure.
“Ensuring that products and components are kept up-to-date is essential to maintaining the security of networks,” the letter said.
“Escalating US action against Huawei may affect its ability to provide updates for products containing US technology.”
An NCSC spokeswoman said: “The NCSC has provided operators with a series of precautionary steps we recommend they take while we carefully consider the impact these sanctions have on the UK’s networks.”
Huawei Vice President Victor Zhang said: “Our customers are our number one priority and we are working with them to ensure business continuity. We strongly oppose politically-motivated actions by the US that are designed to damage our business and are not based on evidence.”
BT and Vodafone declined to comment.
Britain designated Huawei a “high-risk vendor” in January, capping its 5G involvement at a 35 percent market share and excluding it from the data-heavy core of the network.
Officials now say they are reviewing the specific guidance on how Huawei equipment should be deployed in order to best secure UK networks and are considering a range of options. A decision is due in the coming weeks.
Any move by London to further restrict Huawei or bar the company completely would strain relations with China, which have grown tense in recent months over Beijing’s handling of the situation in Hong Kong and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pandemic pushes central bank digital currencies into top gear – Finance- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The coronavirus pandemic is accelerating the development of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) as it has prompted millions of people to turn to cashless payments, central bank officials said on Thursday.
Central banks have been examining how CBDCs could become a reality since Facebook’s efforts to launch its Libra cryptocurrency stablecoin raised the prospect of a private sector social media giant competing with traditional currencies.
“There is little evidence that cash transmits the virus but COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented experiment in digitalisation across our lives,” Benoit Coeure, head of the Innovation Hub at the Bank for International Settlements, said.
“COVID-19 will be remembered by economic historians as the event which pushed CBDC development into top gear,” he told an online event held by think tank CEPR and the London School of Economics.
Coeure co-chairs a group of central banks working on the “building blocks” of a CBDC and will report back in October.
Central banks will introduce CBDCs but in a cautious way to avoid fragmenting the financial and monetary system, he added.
“There is no such thing as an off-the-shelf CBDC,” he said.
Christina Segal-Knowles, executive director for financial markets infrastructure at the Bank of England, said the pandemic has accentuated an existing trend of shrinking use of cash.
Withdrawals from cash machines in Britain have plummeted since the national lockdown to fight the pandemic began in March as shops insist on contactless payments in some cases, she said.
The BoE has published a discussion paper on a potential CBDC, whose uses could include cutting the cost of cross-border payments like remittances, she said.
“We are actively exploring it given the potential opportunities,” Segal-Knowles told the event, adding it was still unclear what impact a CBDC would have on the financial system and implementation of monetary policy.

Amazon workers walk out over lack of protective gear amid coronavirus | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon workers walked out of a New York City facility on Monday, going on strike and demanding increased protective gear and hazard pay as they work through the coronavirus pandemic.
“Since the building won’t close by itself, we’re going to have to force their hand,” Chris Smalls, lead organizer of the Staten Island strike, told CNBC. He added that workers “will not return until the building gets sanitized”.
The strikers at the JFK8 warehouse demanded the company close down the large warehouse for thorough cleaning after reports of multiple employees testing positive for the coronavirus.
“How many cases we got? Ten!” went a call-and-response chant outside the fulfillment center, according to one report.
On Monday afternoon, Smalls said he had been told he would be dismissed from his position at the company.
He said in a statement: “Amazon would rather fire workers than face up to its total failure to do what it should to keep us, our families, and our communities safe. I am outraged and disappointed, but I’m not shocked. As usual, Amazon would rather sweep a problem under the rug than act to keep workers and working communities safe.”
Amazon said in a statement that Smalls received multiple warnings for violating physical distancing guidelines and putting the safety of others at risk, and he had been asked to stay at home for 14 days with pay after having found to have had close contact with a person who had been diagnosed with Covid-19.
The company also disputed the allegations of the workers who had participated in the walkout and said it had taken measures to keep people safe, including by intensifying cleaning and procuring safety supplies.

Delivery workers for Instacart, a national delivery service also went on strike across the country on Monday, demanding disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer and better pay to offset risks faced in bringing groceries to Americans confined to their homes.
They received support from the Massachusetts senator and recent presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren.

Some Whole Foods workers are also expected to strike on Tuesday.
While much of the US navigates public gathering restrictions and mandatory stay-at-home orders, and as confirmed cases and deaths from the respiratory illness rise, Small alleged that Amazon employees have been exposed to multiple people who have been found to have Covid-19.
Employees at the New York facility accuse Amazon of poor communication about worker health. Small himself is in quarantine after coming in contact with an infected co-worker.
The management assistant alleges only “a select few of the general managers” and a handful of colleagues in close proximity were informed about the diagnosis. Another anonymous worker told CNBC gloves were being rationed.
Amazon confirmed an associate, who reported for work on 11 March, has since been diagnosed with Covid-19. The associate received medical care and is in quarantine, the company said.
“We are following all guidelines from local health officials and are taking extreme measures to ensure the safety of employees at our site,” a spokeswoman told CNBC.
The company shot back at Small’s accusations, claiming he was “alleging many misleading things” while at home on quarantine and receiving full pay.
Amazon insisted it had “taken extreme measures” for safety, including deep cleaning and procuring safety supplies. The spokeswoman added the company permits unlimited unpaid leave for employees who feel uncomfortable working during the outbreak.
Amazon has had to balance a spike in demand for online deliveries with growing risks to its workers. Research indicates the coronavirus can survive on items like cardboard for 24 hours, and on plastic for up to three days.
The company instituted a 3ft distancing policy and distributed hand sanitizer throughout its facilities. Still, workers had already tested positive for the coronavirus at 11 warehouses. One warehouse in Kentucky was forced to close temporarily.
With Amazon employing nearly 800,000 people, some workers claim the measures don’t go far enough. Warehouses are still sometimes packed with thousands of employees confined to small spaces.
New York state has the most confirmed Covid-19 cases in the US. More than 60,000 cases have been confirmed across the state, resulting in more more than 1,000 deaths.
On Sunday, Instacart announced concessions to its delivery workers including new health and safety supplies and automatic tipping.
In a Medium post, Instacart workers and the Gig Workers Collective said the company’s response was “insulting for a number of reasons”.
“We are heartened by the outpouring of support we’ve received from Instacart customers, politicians, activists and everyday folks worried that they could be exposed to the virus due to Instacart’s craven profit-seeking,” the workers wrote.
“It goes to show that corporate greed is an issue that impacts us all, whether one is a shopper directly being affected, or not.”

5G Will Shift C-V2X into High Gear- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article

While the commercial rollout of 5G for consumers is in full swing, the new generation of cellular connectivity will also have a transformative effect on roadways worldwide. Soon, in 2023, cars will start to communicate with each other to increase overall road safety and traffic. According to recent figures published by global tech advisory firm ABI Research, a total of 41 million 5G connected cars will already be on roads by 2030. That number will rise to 83 million 5G connected cars by 2035. By then, 5G connected cars will make up more than 75% of the total C-V2X equipped cars.
“These numbers underline the huge momentum for cellular connectivity, and particularly 5G, in the automotive sector,” says Leo Gergs, Research Analyst for 5G Markets at ABI Research. “As a consequence, we will see a rising number of automotive OEMs start developing C-V2X modules for their cars during 2020. We can then expect the first 5G connected cars on the roads in 2022.”
While leading car manufacturer Ford already announced new car models equipped with C-V2X for 2021, other automotive heavyweights like Audi, BMW, and Volkswagen have all partnered up with the likes of Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia to commence large-scale trial projects to test the capabilities of cellular technology for connected car use cases. The results of these proof-of-concept projects are auspicious and show that, through enhancing traffic efficiency, 5G can reduce fuel consumption by up to one third. “More importantly, however, the sharing of sensor data will make overtaking much safer and will be critical to protecting vulnerable road users (such as pedestrians or cyclists). Therefore, bringing 5G-based cellular connectivity into cars will be critical in making the vision of zero road traffic deaths a reality,” Gergs emphasizes.
In total, ABI Research has quantified the contribution of 5G to global GDP to reach US$17 trillion by 2035. A large part of that global GDP will be through increasing the safety of road traffic, which will reduce health care expenditure drastically and take pressure off doctors and hospitals.
“To unlock all these benefits, public authorities and transportation infrastructure owners need to realize their responsibility to fund the installation of cellular networks and enable the widespread deployment of C-V2X to make road traffic safer and greener,” Gergs concludes. “Recent developments around the FCC’s decision to open up the 5.9 GHz frequency for C-V2X technology is a first step in the right direction. Now, other regulators need to follow. Furthermore, both infrastructure vendors and network operators need to wake up and work closely with automotive manufacturers to make 5G a success for connected cars.”
These findings are from ABI Research’s 5G in Automotive and Smart Transportation application analysis report. This report is part of the company’s 5G Markets research service, which includes research, data, and analyst insights. Based on extensive primary interviews, Application Analysis reports present in-depth analysis on key market trends and factors for a specific technology.

New documents show Huawei role in shipping prohibited US gear to Iran – Strategy – Hardware – Networking – Security – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

China’s Huawei Technologies, which for years has denied violating American trade sanctions on Iran, produced internal company records in 2010 that show it was directly involved in sending prohibited US computer equipment to Iran’s largest mobile-phone operator.
Two Huawei packing lists, dated December 2010, included computer equipment made by Hewlett-Packard Co and destined for the Iranian carrier, internal Huawei documents reviewed by Reuters show.
Another Huawei document, dated two months later, stated: “Currently the equipment is delivered to Tehran, and waiting for the custom clearance.”
The packing lists and other internal documents, reported here for the first time, provide the strongest documentary evidence to date of Huawei’s involvement in alleged trade sanctions violations. They could bolster Washington’s multifaceted campaign to check the power of Huawei, the world’s leading telecommunications-equipment maker.
The United States is trying to persuade allies to avoid using Huawei equipment in their next-generation mobile telecommunications systems, known as 5G. Separately, US authorities are battling Huawei on a legal front.
The newly obtained documents involve a multi-million dollar telecommunications project in Iran that figures prominently in an ongoing criminal case Washington has brought against the Chinese company and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou. The daughter of Huawei’s founder, Meng has been fighting extradition from Canada to the United States since her arrest in Vancouver in December 2018. Huawei and Meng have denied the charges, which involve bank fraud, wire fraud and other allegations.
The documents, which aren’t cited in the criminal case, provide new details about Huawei’s role in providing an Iranian telecom carrier with numerous computer servers, switches and other equipment made by HP, as well as software made by other American companies at the time, including Microsoft Corp, Symantec Corp and Novell Inc.
A US indictment alleges that Huawei and Meng participated in a fraudulent scheme to obtain prohibited US goods and technology for Huawei’s Iran-based business, and move money out of Iran by deceiving Western banks. The indictment accuses Huawei and Meng of surreptitiously using an “unofficial subsidiary” in Iran called Skycom Tech Co Ltd to obtain the prohibited goods.
“Huawei could thus attempt to claim ignorance with respect to any illegal act committed by Skycom on behalf of Huawei, including violations of” US sanctions laws, the indictment states. Skycom, which Huawei has described as a local business partner in Iran, is named as a defendant. Records in Hong Kong, where Skycom was registered, show the firm was liquidated in June 2017.
The newly obtained records reviewed by Reuters show that another Chinese company, Panda International Information Technology Co, which isn’t named in the US indictment, was also involved in acquiring hardware and software for the Iranian project. Panda International has longstanding ties to Huawei and is controlled by a Chinese state-owned company.
“Due to ongoing legal proceedings, it is not appropriate for Huawei to comment at this time,” a Huawei spokesman said in response to questions about the newly obtained documents. “Huawei is committed to comply with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries and regions where we operate, including all export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US, and EU.”
China’s foreign ministry said that “the United States, without presenting any evidence, has been over-generalizing the concept of national security and abusing its state power to unreasonably suppress specific Chinese firms.” It referred questions about the Huawei documents to the company.
Packing lists
The US indictment cites articles by Reuters in 2012 and 2013 which reported that Skycom had offered in late 2010 to sell at least 1.3 million euros worth of embargoed HP computer equipment to Mobile Telecommunication Co of Iran. The Iranian mobile provider is variously known as MCI and MCCI.
MCI’s parent company is Telecommunication Co of Iran. At the time, TCI was controlled by a consortium whose largest stakeholder was a company controlled by the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Another stakeholder was Setad, an organization controlled by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The earlier Reuters reports were based on a partial price list included in a Huawei and Skycom proposal in October 2010 to expand MCI’s customer billing system. Huawei had provided MCI’s original billing system, which wasn’t keeping pace with MCI’s growing customer base. The price list was marked with Huawei’s logo and stamped “SKYCOM IRAN OFFICE.”
At the time, Huawei said it ultimately never delivered the HP goods to Iran. A Huawei spokesman told Reuters in 2012 that the price list was a “bidding document” submitted by Skycom and that “Huawei has never provided the equipment … nor done so through Skycom.”
But the newly obtained documents – more than 100 additional pages related to the project – show that Huawei was involved in sending at least some of that US equipment to Iran. The documents are variously written in English, Chinese and Farsi.
One internal document showed that Huawei was deeply involved in the MCI expansion project. It states that on September 25, 2010, MCI asked Huawei to start the project. “The equipment contract was signed,” the document states, without providing details.
The documents also include a “Bill of Quantity Quotation,” a 2010 proposal that listed the equipment needed for the project. It was produced by Huawei and includes HP gear, as well as server software made then by Microsoft, Symantec and Novell.
The documents also include two packing lists that were dated December 7 and December 13, 2010, with Huawei’s logo at the top. The name Huawei also appears in the lists’ metadata – computer information about the documents’ creation.
The packing lists, which include some prohibited HP equipment, provided extensive details of 340 shipping cases, such as weights and sizes, with ultimate destinations in the major Iranian cities of Tehran, Shiraz and Mashhad.
The packing lists include numerous HP servers, switches and disk arrays, as well as Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000 software.
Sale ‘prohibited’
Reuters did not have access to other transport records, such as customs and delivery forms, specifying which equipment reached MCI. But a later Huawei document stated that equipment for the telecom expansion project had arrived in Iran.
MCI did not respond to a request for comment.
A spokesman for Hewlett Packard Enterprise said: “Our contract terms prohibited the sale of these products to Iran, and required that our partners comply with all applicable export laws and regulations. This remains true today.”
Microsoft did not answer questions about the legality of shipping its server software to Iran. Symantec, now called NortonLifeLock Inc, declined to comment. The current owner of the Novell software didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Some of the newly obtained documents suggest Huawei may have used Panda International to purchase hardware and software.
The records include a signed equipment contract between MCI and Panda International that included more than $10 million worth of equipment for the billing system project, although it doesn’t specify all of the gear. According to the contract, which references an invoice from September 2010, MCI was to pay Panda International through China Construction Bank’s branch in the city of Shenzhen – the location of Huawei’s headquarters.
Panda International is controlled by China Electronics Corp, a Chinese state-owned tech company. According to Panda International’s website, Panda has a “long and deep history with Huawei” that began in 2007.
People familiar with the matter told Reuters that Huawei regularly used Panda International to ship equipment to customers in Iran and Syria.
Panda International, China Electronics and China Construction Bank did not respond to requests for comment.
In 2014, the US Department of Commerce added Panda International to its “Entity List” – a roster of companies effectively banned from doing business with US firms. The department said Panda International may have attempted “to export items to destinations sanctioned by the United States.”
The documents reviewed by Reuters show that Huawei was involved in the equipment contract between Panda International and MCI.
A letter from MCI to Huawei with a handwritten date in July 2011 reported a series of problems with the installation of HP racks and other equipment in Shiraz related to the Panda International contract.
Two years later, a joint letter signed by officials from Huawei and MCI in October 2013 confirmed that “problems and shortcomings” under the equipment contract “were resolved by Huawei.”

A Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Review: Should You Buy One? – Blog – 10 minute

The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier was first released to the smartwatch market on November 18th, 2016. To this day, it remains the #1 best selling smartwatch on Amazon.
There are good reasons for this. Not the least of which is the fact that unlike most bulky, square smartwatches, the Samsung Gear S3 has a circular face that looks like a regular watch.

The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier in particular is especially popular because of its innovative rotating bezel for interfacing with the OS, the impressive watch faces you can download, and features that’ll make you feel like you’re James Bond.
In this Samsung Gear S3 Frontier review, you’ll learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier, and why you probably should own one.
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Design and Specs
The Gear S3’s 1.3-inch super AMOLED display has more room for apps than you might expect, when compared to square smartwatches.
The circular bezel lets you quickly navigate through apps, scroll through messages, and even answer calls. One twist left shows you all notifications, and one twist right lets you switch quickly to multiple widgets.

The body, bezel, and buttons are made of stainless steel, which means it’s a watch that’s durable enough to last you for years.
One charge of the 380 mAH Li-Ion battery will typically last you a couple of days, and you can purchase a Qi wireless charger so that you can charge at home, the office, or while you’re traveling.
Important features:

IP68 rated to withstand dust, dirt, and submersion into up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.
Gorilla Glass 1.3 inch touchscreen face offering 16 million colors
Tizen-based OS running on a dual-core 1.0 GHz Cortex-A53 processor
768MB flash RAM with 4GB of internal storage
802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter
Bluetooth compatible
Embedded GLONASS GPS receiver
Sensors include accelerometer, gyro, heart rate, and barometer

The watch weighs in at 64 grams (2.22 oz), which feels slightly heavier than a large men’s Casio watch.
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Watch Faces
The watch faces that are available for the Samsung Gear S3 family of watches are remarkable. The most stylish and beautiful ones are usually offered at a price ranging from $1 up to $5. Most are very much worth the price.
Although, there’s also a wide selection of excellent free watch faces as well.

Watch face range from health focused or classy and stylish to military style or comic book and animated. There’s a Samsung Gear S3 watch face for just about anyone out there.
The worst thing about the selection is that you’re going to have a hard time deciding which one to use. One option is to use a different watch face every day of the week!
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier GPS Apps
All of this hardware offers you some of the coolest features to support all of your adventures.
To install apps and watch faces onto your watch, you’ll need to install the Galaxy Wearable app onto your Android from Google Play or your iPhone from the Apple Store (yes the watch is compatible with both).

The embedded GPS receiver is one of the most useful features of the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.
MapMyRun
For example, if you install the MapMyRun app on your Android or on your iPhone, you can install the companion Samsung Gear MapMyRun app to log your walk or run even if you leave your phone in the car.

Navigation Pro
If you install Navigation Pro: Google Maps Navi on your Android or your iPhone, you can install the companion Navigation Pro app on your Samsung Gear to display navigational directions right on your wrist.

This means you can put your phone away while you’re driving and just glance at your wrist for directions.
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Health Apps
When it comes to health, the Samsung Gear S3 doesn’t look like other sleek and stylish sports smartwatches. But when it comes to functionality, it does offer everything you might need.
Samsung Health
When it comes to monitoring your health, the Samsung Gear Health app uses the accelerometer, gyro, and heart rate monitor to log your movements, exercise, and heart rate.

These are all logged and synced with the Samsung Health app on your phone. The Samsung Health app is central to all of the tracking features available on your phone:

Step tracking
Heart rate
Water and caffeine intake
Sleep quality

Many watch faces will display your current steps, calories burned, and heart rate as well.
Download Samsung Health for Android or for your iPhone
GymRun
You can also use the GymRun Workout app on your Samsung Gear S3 to track your workouts without having to carry your smartphone around the gym.
Use the custom workouts you’ve designed from your phone app to track your exercise using your phone while you’re in the gym.

Keep in mind that the Premium version of GymRun is required in order for the Samsung Gear S3 companion app to work.
Download GymRun for Android. This app is not available for iPhone.
G’night Sleep Tracker
Another important aspect of health is how well you sleep, and yes there’s an app for that. The G’Night sleep tracking app is one of the best. This is a standalone app that runs in the background and senses every small movement you make during the night.

It’s a little more detailed than the Samsung Health app in the details it provides about your movements and how long you spent in REM sleep.
Other Useful Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Apps
If you really want to impress people around you, when it comes time to pay at the grocery store, just hold your phone up to the card reader and pay with your Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch.
Samsung Pay
This technology is made possible thanks to the Samsung Pay app. The app uses your Gear’s ability to transmit an NFC signal to the pay terminal. The Pay terminal recognizes this signal just the same as if you’d swiped your bank card.

All you have to do to set it up is install the Samsung Pay app on your smart watch and on your Android smartphone (not yet available on iPhone). Then configure your bank cards using the instructions in the app.
Forget your wallet or purse at home? No problem!
Make and Receive Phone Calls
One of the coolest features available with your Samsung Gear S3 is the ability to make or receive phone calls right from your watch.
This is because the watch hardware includes both a speaker and a microphone.
This feature includes full access to all of your phone contacts, the ability to dial out from your watch, and the ability to decline calls as well.

Tap the green phone button when receiving an incoming call, and you can carry out a full conversation with the person talking directly into your watch.
You may get some curious glances from people around you, but don’t let that stop you.
Plus, if you don’t want people hearing your conversation, just pair your bluetooth earphones with your Samsung Gear S3 and you can use the earbuds to have the conversation instead.
Barometer and Altitude
The barometer sensor in your Samsung Gear S3 means you get access to two useful readings for your environment.
Since air pressure at sea level is roughly 14.7 pounds per square inch at sea level, and since the watch’s GPS knows your location, it can calibrate the watch to detect your altitude above sea level.

You can also keep an eye on the barometer reading to see if it’s rising or falling and predict coming storms.
Should You Buy A Samsung Gear S3 Frontier?
This smartwatch is ideal for people who are going for a more rugged watch look. Since it’s a bit heavier than something like a Fitbit, it may not be idea for runners or people with a smaller body frame.
However, if you enjoy hiking or exploring and are looking for an “adventure” smartwatch that’ll track your health, monitor your location and altitude, and let you make and receive calls while keeping your phone in your pocket, then this is the smartwatch for you.

NBN Co upgrades network gear software after Sky Muster faults skyrocket – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

NBN Co is upgrading the software on network equipment used for its Sky Muster service following a sharp rise in the number of network faults recorded over the past six months.
The company overnight released numbers on the performance of its satellite network in January, a month in which it had a near two-day outage impacting some users.
Across the whole of January 2020, NBN Co recorded 22 satellite network faults, well above the six it saw on the network in July and August last year.
The company produced a graph showing the number of faults had risen consistently over the past six months, as had the “average” time needed to resolve them, which is now almost 2.5 hours.

“Average” time to resolution somewhat masks the impact of outages by distributing the impact across all 96,000 Sky Muster users for reporting purposes, even though many of those users would not have experienced an outage.
The company’s main January outage is a case in point.
While it was reported at the time that the number of impacted users was around 3000 to 4000, it can now be revealed that the impact was felt by 10 percent – about 9600 – users.
“The [total] January average time to restore figures were impacted by a complex network incident that affected roughly 10 percent of our overall satellite customers,” an NBN Co spokesperson told iTnews.
The impact on directly impacted users was severe, stretching to “37.3 hours”, according to NBN Co’s official post-mortem numbers.
However, when averaged across the entire user base, the impact appears considerably less.
The sharp rise in network incidents on Sky Muster coincided with a catastrophic bushfire season, and flash floods in parts of the country in late January.
NBN Co’s spokesperson confirmed that, in January alone, “the increased number of satellite network incidents in January was largely driven by an increase in weather-related faults, which accounted for 13 of 22 faults”.
“However, there were also a number of short running, low impacting equipment related failures in the network,” the spokesperson said, adding that “a software upgrade aimed at fixing these issues” is being deployed from this month.
It’s worth noting that January 2020 is the worst ever month for network incidents on Sky Muster, though not for average time to restore.
That milestone was set in April 2019 when NBN Co saw 20 incidents and an average time to restore of 13.5 hours, indicating a particularly widespread fault.
Still, the existence of data on Sky Muster faults is relatively nascent, being introduced only in September last year, with a backdated set of numbers stretching back to September 2018.
The Sky Muster numbers also include a quirk not found in other reported figures: the accounting for weather-related faults.
“For all technologies except for Sky Muster and Sky Muster Plus, when we calculate our metrics we do not include natural disasters or other extraordinary events beyond our control in the calculation as they would skew the results significantly,” NBN Co’s spokesperson said.
“For Sky Muster and Sky Muster Plus, a ‘network fault’ means an incident on the NBN satellite network where one or more Sky Muster and Sky Muster Plus services degrades and does not meet NBN Co’s technical criteria and which NBN Co is responsible, or is caused by a weather event.”

Sideloaded Google apps won’t run on newer Huawei gear – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei.

Google is warning users with newer Huawei devices who yearn for apps like Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Hangouts and the Play Store not to “sideloade” these from unofficial and potentially insecure sources, saying the company won’t allow its services to run on uncertified devices.
The online advertising and search giant’s Android and Play legal director Tristan Ostrowski reiterated over the weekend that Google is prohibited by the United States government from collaborating with Huawei after May 16, 2019.
This means that while Huawei devices that went on sale on or before that date can have Google services, ones made available after that cannot.
Newer Huawei devices are considered by Google to be uncertified as they have not been through the security vetting process other vendors undergo, due to the US government ban that’s in effect.
Sideloaded Google apps “will not work reliably because we do not allow these services to run on uncertified devices where security may have been compromised,” Ostrowski said.
Ostrowski suggested that users who want to check if their devices are certified should use the Google Play Store app to do so.
In the Settings menu item Android devices announce if they have the Play Protect certification or not.
Google Play Store is not available on newer Huawei devices due to the US government ban on American companies working with the Chinese telco giant however.
It is not clear if Ostrowski’s comments mean that there are Android devices that have Google Play Store could be uncertified despite the app being preloaded on them.
Older Huawei devices remain supported by Google and its apps on these will receive updates and security patches.
Huawei is trying to work around the US ban on Google services and has launched its own mobile service ecosystem for Android devices that developers can use to build apps and monetise them.

Canada’s Telus to launch 5G network with Huawei gear – Financial Post – Security – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Canadian telecom operator Telus Corp will use Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s equipment to launch 5G network in the country later this year, the company’s chief financial officer, Doug French, told the Financial Post.
“We’re going to launch 5G with Huawei out of the gate,” Doug said in an interview with the Post following the Canadian telecom’s fourth-quarter earnings.
Canada is reviewing the security implications of 5G networks, including whether to allow Huawei to supply 5G network equipment.
Doug told the Post that the company will continue to work with the government to ensure all standards are met.
Telus on Thursday warned of higher costs related to setting up 5G wireless network if the Canadian government banned Huawei.
Meanwhile, US prosecutors on Thursday accused Huawei of stealing trade secrets and helping Iran track protesters in its latest indictment against the Chinese company.
Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou is currently in Canadian custody awaiting a decision on extradition to the United States.
Telus did not offer an immediate comment, while Huawei said it does not comment on customers.
