No, Clearview AI’s creepy plan to spy on us is not ‘free speech’ | Jake Laperruque | Opinion- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Law enforcement agencies around the world are enthusiastically adopting the services of Clearview AI, a tech company whose powerful software scrapes several billion open-source images for the purposes of facial recognition.
As the company confronts mounting criticism over its disturbing surveillance practices, its CEO, Hoan Ton-That, is rolling out an audacious new defense: he claims that Clearview’s practices are protected by the first amendment. Ton-That’s upside-down views of civil liberties are, it seems, just as Orwellian as his company’s surveillance apparatus.
Fortunately he is dead wrong. The constitution does not shield Clearview AI from accountability. We can, and must, pass laws to limit it and other facial recognition systems.
Facial recognition is extremely dangerous. It offers us the horrible choice between dysfunction and dystopia. On the one hand, studies have repeatedly shown that facial recognition can have serious accuracy problems, especially for people of color. Even when these systems do work, however, they give the government unprecedented power to catalog and track the activities and interactions of people everywhere. No wonder the technology is employed most frequently by authoritarian states like China, which reportedly uses facial recognition to spy on its persecuted Muslim minority.
The unrestricted use of facial recognition technology is clearly incompatible with a democratic society. The first amendment does not give companies the unassailable right to engage in “speech” that involves sending out the intimate details of our lives.

Laws have existed for decades which prevent companies from sharing sensitive user information – for example, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act prohibits companies from voluntarily sharing the contents of our text messages or emails, except for narrow exceptions such as emergencies. Phone companies have long been prohibited from handing out or selling our phone records, and more recent rules similarly prohibit the sale of our phones’ GPS data (although lax FCC enforcement has caused serious harm).
Just because images or information were hypothetically obtained from public sources doesn’t totally nullify our right to privacy. The supreme court recently ruled that the fourth amendment bars the police from tracking our cellphone locations without a warrant, even when you are traveling in public. And just as the fourth amendment already protects us from warrantless cellphone tracking, future laws can guard us from facial recognition surveillance technologies that effortlessly catalog our location in much the same way.
Ton-That specifically defended his company’s ability to scrape our public photos off social media. Web scraping isn’t always bad – academics, researchers, and journalists all employ scraping in highly beneficial ways. But we don’t need to totally ban scraping in order to stop bad actors like Clearview AI. We can enact policies that limit how our personal data is shared and used.
We must pass laws that restrict facial recognition technologies, both in the private sector and when used by government. Attempts to defend mass surveillance under the auspices of free speech are misguided at best and sinister at worst. All Americans should push back.

Free webinar: How can you avoid burnout in 2020?- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Creatives are increasingly expected to do more with less and this means it is not uncommon for them to experience burnout. In fact, 75% of creatives globally have suffered from some kind of exhaustion or burnout over the last six months, according to a study Asana conducted on burnout in 2019.
A follow up study from Asana, it’s Anatomy of Work Index explored in detail how time is spent at work, and how this can contribute to workloads, motivation and staff retention. This study suggests that one of the reasons workers stay late is not having enough time to do their actual job and subsequently being overwhelmed with administrative tasks — well over half (60%) of knowledge workers’ time is currently spent on doing ‘work about work’ such as responding to emails and ‘pings’, or unexpected meetings.
In this latest DrumCast, Asana’s head of global community Joshua Zerkel advises businesses on how to boost productivity by drawing deep into Asana’s research over the past year into how we spend our time at work, and what causes burnout. “The World Health Organization has classified burnout as an occupational phenomenon. And while our research shows there’s small differences from country to country, the overall trend is showing things are moving in the same direction of people increasingly being overwhelmed,” he says.
“We can see nearly half of the hours in a standard 40-hour work week are being spent on activities people don’t enjoy doing, and this puts them into a productivity black hole. Knowledge workers are spending their time chasing people for approval and switching between apps, but there are ways to piece together the work-flow and create a process that makes employees feel much happier.”
When asked what this might look like, and how to apply a more cohesive workplace strategy in the workplace, Zerkel goes onto suggest: “If you have six different tools to help with workplace management then you’re using far too many. You want to talk to Chris, you use Slack. You want to talk to Emily, you go to her desk. It’s exhausting! Defining channels is really important, and you need one system that’s going to make everything as simple as possible. There needs to be a joined-up approach.”
Zerkel says at his Asana office, which is based in San Francisco, there is a “no-meetings Wednesday” rule in action and claims this has upped the productivity of his workers and allowed them to get more done. “It’s a good example of how you really reduce the root causes of worker burnout,” he adds.
To find out more about how to manage workplace burnout and how you can make your team as creative and productive as possible, register to watch the full Asana DrumCast here.

Free ‘FASTag’ Till February 29th, Date Extended By NHAI- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
The Tempemail Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is waiving the FASTag fee until the end of February. The fee was exempted for vehicles that were registering for it from November 22 to December 15 in 2019. With this extension, NHAI further encourages the move towards an electronic toll collection system in India. However, there won’t be any change for the minimum balance amount required in the FASTag wallet and security deposit.
A FASTag is an electronic tag that is pasted on a vehicle’s windscreen for identification at toll booths. FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification technology to enable toll payments directly via prepaid or savings account that has been linked to the tag. It is managed and operated by the Tempemail Highway Authority of India.
In a statement made by the Government, they have announced that the NHAI FASTag will be free of cost between February 15 and 29, 2020. Owners of vehicles can obtain a FASTag by visiting any authorized point-of-sale location and carrying along a valid Registration Certificate (RC) of their vehicle.
As per their statement, FASTags can attained from all regional transport offices, national highway fee plazas, common service centers, transport hubs, petrol pumps, etc. The government has also developed an App named MYFASTag to search for locations and also a website – www.ihmcl.com and additionally a helpline number 1033.
As of today, the FASTag system has become accessible in more than 527 national highways across the country with over 1 crore FASTags being issued until December 2019. In a statement made by Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, this implementation of electronic toll collection has grown their revenue to Rs 87 crore from Rs 68 crore.

10 Best Free Online College Course Websites – Blog – 10 minute

Education is important, but the path to education is changing rapidly. Getting a degree may still be important, but in the 21st Century economy it’s not the gold standard it used to be.
You’ll need to keep learning for the rest of your life in order to keep up. You may even have to change careers multiple times over the course of your life. Unfortunately, for most people who  work, dropping everything to go back to school is not a viable option.

The good news is that you no longer have to put your life on hold (or empty your bank account) to get a college-level education. Thanks to the open education movement and advances in eLearning, you can take free online college courses from the comfort of your home. Many of these are often free!
The following are ten of the best, free online college course websites. Be aware that some of these sites also host paid courses or paid add-ons, but you’ll find plenty of free courses to elevate your knowledge to the next level.
A Note on Assessment and Accreditation
One important thing to mention before we get to the actual free online college course websites is accreditation and assessment. There are three components to a college course. The first is course material. The second is assessment of your knowledge. The third is the school’s accreditation.
With online courses, these three components are usually separate. Most often, the course content is free. This is perfect for someone who wants to learn something new. The assessment of your knowledge, when offered, is often also free. You’ll either complete a computerized exam or have your work graded.

Accreditation is a different story. This is the process through which an institution certifies your assessment and gives you formal credit for knowledge gained. Depending on the nature of the accreditation, you can usually use it to get a job, gain college credit or some other formal purpose.
Where accreditation is offered, it usually carries a price tag. Most people looking to learn online don’t need accreditation, but if that’s what you’re ultimately after, this is one thing you won’t get for free.
MIT OpenCourseWare is special for a few reasons, but the most important is that it’s the pioneering project that kickstarted free college-level education on the web. Back in 2001, MIT made the decision to publish all of their course material online, for free.
Using the Creative Commons licence framework, students and educators can read, modify and reuse learning content from one of the most elite educational institutions in the world.

Given MIT’s reputation and technological specialization, you’d be right to expect many amazing courses in areas such as Computer Science and Engineering. However, they also have free online college courses in humanities subjects, such as linguistics, philosophy and even gender studies.
Unlike many of the sites below, MIT OpenCourseWare is solely focused on content. You don’t actually get to “take” these courses. Rather, you can download all the course material and go through it yourself. Sometimes this includes assignments with answers, and for some more recent courses it also includes video recordings of lectures.
If you want to see what makes MIT special and are interested in their specialized subject areas, MIT Opencourseware is an essential resource. However, if you want something a little more interactive, then let’s move on to the other worthy contenders on this list.
Coursera is one of the early MOOC pioneers. That is, Massive Open Online Courses. It was started by two ex-Stanford professors back in 2012 and today hosts content from universities such as Princeton, Duke and Stanford. To name but a few.

If you are willing to pay the fee, you can get an accredited certificate or even a degree! However, for no money at all you can learn some of the most relevant skills in modern life here. Coursera is especially valuable for learning about hot, new in-demand skills and fields.
The free online college courses here are usually self-paced and put together by some of the best educators in the world. You can get a certificate of completion for some courses, such as this one.

Of course, it’s not accredited, but that might not matter to your employer or whomever else you want to show that you’ve put effort into learning something new.
Like Coursera, edX is a pioneer of the MOOC revolution. Launching in 2012. The site is a joint venture by Harvard University and MIT. However, free online college course material on edX comes from a large variety of respected institutions.

There are college-level courses in just about any subject area that you can imagine, including hard-hitters such as engineering and medicine. The quality of the courses are exceptional, with plenty of self-paced offerings on the menu.
While taking a course is free, you can receive a “verified certificate” for a fee. This can be used as evidence that you’ve passed an assessment and that you were the person who completed the test. Although this does not count as any sort of official accreditation, you can include it with job applications or any other relevant applications to show you’ve done the work.
Khan Academy started off as a way for Salman Khan to help family members understand their math homework. Today it’s one of the best educational resources on the internet.

While the majority of topics covered here cover the school years before college, there are college prep and college level material here as well. It’s also an excellent way to brush up on things like high school mathematics. This is helpful if you want to enroll in college later in life and are a bit hazy on your school days. According to their official documentation, their coursework covers all of K12 and “early” college.
Everything on the site is free, and the creators have created one of the most intuitive systems to gauge your current level, and guide you along a learning path suited to your needs. This is especially helpful in tough subject areas such as mathematics.
Udemy was founded all the way back in 2009 and has simply gone from strength to strength in the world of online learning. The key innovation of Udemy is that it makes it relatively easy for anyone with something to teach to create a course. If you’re an expert who can transfer your skills to others, then Udemy is a great place to do that while earning some money.
Yes, many of the courses on Udemy do attract a fee, but there are also hundreds and hundreds of excellent free online college courses on the platform. Often, instructors will make their introductory courses free, only charging money for intermediate and advanced levels. Which means that you can freely learn the fundamentals of various subjects.

While these courses are generally not meant to be the equivalent of college course modules, many of them are taught by retired faculty or professionals in those fields. So it’s a good way to gain skills and knowledge from a field directly in a less formal way.
On the other hand, Udemy does not have stringent curation standards compared to the likes of edX or Coursera, so you’ll always have to approach any courses offered on the site with a critical eye. We also think that Udemy has one of the most user-friendly, polished mobile apps of any online education site today. It’s well worth a visit!
Not to be confused with the similarly-named Udemy, Udacity was famously founded by Sebastian Thrun and remains a key player in the world of online education. When Udacity was first launched, it focused on replicating college courses, but as competition in this sector had heated up, Udacity has evolved into a more vocational, skills-focused platform.

There are plenty of excellent free online college courses on Udacity, but if you’re willing to pay you can enroll for Udacity’s innovative “nanodegree” programs, which are built up from various smaller courses and come with a formal accreditation, so you can use them to apply for jobs and other formal purposes.
Udacity’s courses aren’t self-paced, and you need to enroll and start along with everyone else. That being said, there’s an extensive archive of past free courses to audit. The knowledge is there for the taking!
Blackboard is one of the world’s leading learning management system (LMS) providers and their Open Education site provides a platform for institutions to offer free courses. It’s a pretty barebones site, but using it proves to be just as simple.

All you need to do is either enter a search term or browse the course catalog using various filters. This includes searching by institution, subject area and language of instruction.
The platform is a little slow, but Blackboard itself is a very solid LMS and there are plenty of very useful courses in the catalog which you can take to your heart’s content for no money at all.
OpenLearn is the Open University’s best-known Open Learning Resource project. It’s also one of the oldest open learning resources on the web, dating back to 1999. Long before the MOOC revolution, driven by sites such as Coursera or edX.

OpenLearn has an absolute mountain of resources for those in the education industry, but the part that’s of interest to frugal students with a desire to learn is the catalogue of free online college courses on offer. These cover just about every subject area you can imagine, with courses clearly marked in terms of their length and difficulty level.
Since these are a collection of open courses from various sources, the level of polish varies, but it’s a very user-friendly site to use and an essential learning resource.
Carnegie Mellon is another world-famous university that’s thrown its hat into the open learning movement. However, not every course on this site is free. Luckily, the courses are clearly marked as “open & free” when applicable.

Even better, you don’t even have to sign up for an account in order to access course content. Although, of course, you can’t save any progress, settings or work if you don’t.
Futurelearn is one of the most interesting entries on this list. It was created from the ground up to focus on MOOCs, rather than adapting existing college courses  FutureLearn has been making MOOCs as a speciality.

The production quality and design of their courses are a cut above the competition. FutureLearn is partly owned by the Open University, but features courses contributed by well over 100 institutions.
FutureLearn is a little more commercialized, which makes sense since those glossy courses also cost quite a bit of money to make. The good news is that they charge a single annual subscription, which gives you access to hundreds of paid short courses. What we want however, are free courses and FutureLearn have handily lumped all of their free courses together into one catalogue.
Get Your Learn On!
The internet started life thanks to support from academia, so it’s only right that it can provide free education to millions of people all over the world today.
With these ten sites, you have access to what feels like the sum total of human knowledge, along with user communities and often access to expert educators. So do you really have an excuse not to up-skill yourself? The time to learn is now!

Simon Hackett backs free 3D mapping project to help bushfire recovery – Strategy – Projects- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Emergency services, researchers and fire-affected communities in South Australia can now access high-resolution 3D maps of the destruction wreaked by bushfires to aid recovery and future planning efforts.
Adelaide-based not-for-profit Airborne Research Australia (ARA) has cobbled the maps together from a combination of LIDAR, RGB cameras and hyperspectral sensors that provides more detailed insights than satellite or ground surveys can produce.
The project was backed by Internode founder Simon Hackett’s philanthropic organisation, which helped ARA launch a series of flights over the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island to collect the imagery of the fire grounds.
Data collected by the slow, low-altitude flyovers was compiled using software donated by UK-based vendor Veesus, providing “centimetre resolution detail,” ARA chief scientist and founder Jorg Hacker said.
“This lets us both detect the location of such habitats and the state and structure of the undergrowth with LIDAR and even the state of health of the surviving vegetation with hyperspectral scanning.
“We also want to make this data freely available to people in the research community so they can study it and use it to obtain insights that will help communities better prepare against fires and to assist fire defenders to plan their strategies against these unprecedented fire events.”
The first flights were launched over the Adelaide Hills in mid-January, followed by flights over Kangaroo Island last week that focused on the Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area.
Hacker, also a Professor Emeritus at Flinders University with a background in atmospheric sciences, said the ARA’s purpose-built aircraft gave the organisation an advantage over commercial aerial surveyors.

(L) Simon Hacket with (R) Jorg Hacker and an ARA plane

“In most cases, commercial surveys fly high in order to get coverage of large areas, so you don’t see details,” he said.
“Our planes are derived from a glider, so they can fly low and slow, with minimal fuel usage. We use less than 15 litres of premium unleaded petrol per hour. producing less pollution and less noise, compared with the smallest Cessnas, which use 40 to 50 litres of Avgas per hour.
“Drones are not a viable option for what we do because they cannot carry the sensors we’re using and are limited in their range. Our planes let us cover remote areas such as Kangaroo Island, flying from Adelaide,” he added.
The granularity of the data means pockets of bush that survived the fires readily stand out from the background, while LIDAR data exposes geographical features typically hidden by vegetation – all of which could help direct recovery efforts in the future and identify ways in which the natural landscape can be used to mitigate risk.

“We want to make all this data available to the public – the affected public especially – to helpthem recover their landscape, especially the natural landscape,” Hacker said.
“For example, Kangaroo Island has some very deep gullies which the fires may have ‘jumped’ over, so the natural habitats may remain intact in these gullies. Our sensors can map in unprecedented detail landscape and forest features that are not visible with standard aerial photography or satellite data or from the ground.
The data is available from ARA’s website.

Facebook commitment to free speech will ‘piss people off’, Zuckerberg says | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook chief executive, has unveiled a new approach to political advertising which he described as a stand for the principles of free speech, but also one that will “piss off a lot of people”.
In a candid discussion at the Silicon Slopes Tech Summit 2020 in Salt Lake City on Friday, Zuckerberg said that since his company is criticized for both what it does and does not do in terms of monitoring use of its platform, it will now support free speech “because in order to be trusted, people need to know what you stand for”.
“We’re going to stand up for free expression,” he said, apparently referring to the company’s decision to resist pressure to ban political ads because it would be too tough to determine the line between true and false content.

“It’s unfortunate that this is such a controversial thing,” Zuckerberg said, adding that critics of his stance are typically “people not at risk of being censored themselves”.
He did acknowledge that the Cambridge Analytica data breach might have been avoided with better monitoring of how customer data was being handled, and said the company was introducing tools to combat hate speech and terrorist recruiting.
The issue of targeted political advertising, including its use in Russian interference with the 2016 US election, continues to haunt the social media giant.
Facebook was recently accused of accepting a Trump ad that included false information about potential challenger Joe Biden and an Elizabeth Warren ad that contained false information. The Massachusetts senator said her campaign intentionally made the ad and submitted it to see if it would be approved.
Zuckerberg has said he has considered banning political ads because “from a business perspective the controversy is not worth the very small part of the business that they make up”. But he has also said he believes “that when its not absolutely clear what to do, we should err on the side of greater expression”.
During a call with analysts last week, after Facebook announced a 27% rise in revenue for 2019 and record profits of $7.35bn for the final quarter, Zuckerberg said his “goal for this next decade isn’t to be liked, but to be understood”.
In Utah on Friday, he offered further explanation for the decision to refuse to ban political advertising, a step Twitter has taken.
“Powerful people are always going to have a voice,” Zuckerberg said. “I feel like someone needs to stand up for giving everyone a voice.”
His comments are unlikely to dampen pressure on his company, which has almost 1.6bn daily users, to take a more proactive role in editing content for inaccuracies and preventing the misappropriation of data.
In a column for the New York Times on Friday, the billionaire philanthropist George Soros warned that Zuckerberg and Facebook would help Donald Trump win re-election in 2020, thanks to a developing “informal mutual assistance operation or agreement”.
Soros wrote: “I believe that Mr Trump and Facebook’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, realise that their interests are aligned – the president’s in winning elections, Mr Zuckerberg’s in making money.”
Facebook, Soros added, “follow[s] only one guiding principle: maximise profits irrespective of the consequences.”
In Utah, Zuckerberg acknowledged that “communication is not my best thing” but said Facebook was ultimately about creating a place where everyone can participate.
“This is the new approach, and I think it’s going to piss off a lot of people,” he said. “But frankly the old approach was pissing off a lot of people too, so let’s try something different.”

6 Best Free Messaging Apps for Android – Blog – 10 minute

Do you remember the last time you went a whole day without sending or receiving a text? Probably not. Whether you’re using your computer to send messages or your phone, it’s a big part of your communication online. And sometimes using a default messenger app on your device simply isn’t enough.
Thankfully, there are plenty of third-party messaging apps for Android to choose from. Whether you’re looking for something very straight-forward with a minimum number of functions, or searching for an app that will let you customize everything about it down to the very last symbol.

Telegram – Best Overall
There are many reasons why you might want to start using Telegram right now. To name a few, the ability to send large media files, have “secret” chats with your friends, edit or delete messages after you send them, or even watch YouTube videos while chatting to people.
However, Telegram’s creators pride themselves on putting security as their main priority. With this app, you can send encrypted messages without worrying about your private conversations staying private. The app also allows you to use a proxy server which can further help you protect your data.

When it comes to chatting, Telegram also has plenty of special features that other messaging apps are lacking. For example, you can use multiple phone number within the app. If you’re creating a group chat, you don’t need to be worried about the number of people you’re adding to it. In Telegram you can have a group chat with up to 200,000 participants.
The app is also very customizable. There’s an auto-night mode, various themes and chat backgrounds to choose from. You can also use Telegram’s live location share feature to track your family and friends from your phone. So if you’re looking for a messaging app that has it all, Telegram deserves to be on top of your list.
Signal – The Most Secure One
If strong security is a deal breaker for you, consider making Signal your primary messaging app. The app uses strong end-to-end encryption and doesn’t store any user records. While you do need to register a valid phone number to use it, that’s the only information that can be revealed about your use of the app.

Other features that make Signal one of the most secure messaging apps include setting an additional screen lock on the app, hiding notifications from your lock screen, and self-destructing messages.
The latter is actually an extremely useful feature, since on other apps you sometimes have to learn how to send self-destructing messages. On Signal you can simply switch the “disappearing messages” function on, and the app will do all the work for you.
Android Messages – The Simple Option
Sometimes you don’t have to go far to find what you’re looking for. Android Messages is Google’s official texting app that has the minimal number of all the basic features for the average user.

Android Messages supports RCS features, which means that you can get extra chat functionality like read receipts, and file transfers. The app also has a dark mode, perfect for low-light environment. If you ever need to send messages from your computer, you can also do that using the app’s official website.
WhatsApp – The Convenient One
While there might be many alternative messaging clients, the majority of users in the West keep using WhatsApp. One of the main reasons for that is the app’s popularity. Most of your friends are already using WhatsApp, so why choose a different messenger?
Plus, if you are looking for an option that has a good balance between the amount of features, security, and customization, WhatsApp might be the best choice for you.

Among the most useful features this app comes with is live location sharing, switching from one phone number to another while keeping your WhatsApp data, and the ability to “unsend” your messages. On top of that, WhatsApp caters to voice and video calling – a feature that’s not available on Telegram, for instance.
WhatsApp also uses end-to-end encryption for both messages and file transfers, which means that the messages are removed from the servers once they’re delivered.
Viber – The One For Making Friends
Viber is another messaging app with an interface and functionality similar to WhatsApp. And there are plenty of reasons you might want to choose it as your main chatting app. You can liven up your texts with stickers and GIFs, as well as voice and video messages.

When it comes to security, Viber has secret chats that come with a self-destruct timer. You can set it to delete messages in a certain conversation to make sure your private information stays private. One interesting feature the app has is the ability to call any mobile or landline in the world. The service is called Viber Out, and while it’s not free, it’s definitely useful if you’re trying to contact someone who’s not a Viber user.
However, the main feature that makes this messaging app stand out is Viber Communities. They’re public group chats that you can join at any moment. Meaning you don’t even need to have friends on the app to use Viber. These chats have unlimited number of members, their own admins and moderators who look after the chats. You can even start your own community and meet new people that share your views and interests.
Facebook Messenger – The One With Extra Functionality
Many people believe that you can’t use Messenger without having an active Facebook account. In reality, you can use Facebook Messenger as a standalone app. All you need to sign up is your mobile number. The only difference is, if you already have a Facebook account, you’ll see all of your Facebook friends in your Messenger contacts already.

The app comes with all the standard features, like using group chats, reacting to messages, and the ability to remove the messages you already sent. Messenger also supports file transfers, so you can share photos and videos with your friends. You can also use the in-app camera to capture your own photos and videos, then edit them in the app using filters and editing tools, and send them to your contacts.
One distinctive difference that Messenger has compared to other apps though is the ability to do more than just chatting. Inside a chat, tap on the four dots in the bottom-left corner and you’ll see a list of activities that you can start with your contacts. That includes sharing your location, setting reminders, playing games, watching videos together, and many more.
The Perfect Texting App For You
In the end, it all comes down to what you want from your messaging app. Whether it’s excellent security, extensive functionality, or over-the-top customization, there’s definitely an app out there that can cater to your needs and preferences.
But if you’re looking for a messaging client that’s already proven its worth, give one of the apps from our list a try. And if you find the one that’s most convenient and satisfying for you, maybe you can get your contacts to switch to a better option with you.

Free webinar: Time is precious, so find out how to use it more wisely in 2020- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

How do we spend our time at work? And are the ways we’re working together actually working? Constant emails, message notifications, unexpected meetings.
The creative industries are in the grip of a cultural pandemic: ‘work about work’ – the tasks and meetings that should be used to optimise and streamline working habits – is getting in the way of meeting the real objectives. Research from Sapio Research on behalf of Asana has found that well over half (60%) of office hours are spent on ‘work about work’. At a time when the demands on creative industry workers already far outstrips their resources, that can lead to missed targets and all the stress and hassle that comes along with that: fully 75% of creatives have suffered from burnout in the last six months.
This special Drumcast, in partnership with work management solutions provider Asana, will examine the Anatomy of Work in order to determine how best the issue of ‘work about work’ can be addressed and improved.
Asana’s head of global community Joshua Zerkel will take you through the research, pulling out insights from individual countries and sectors, and will offer solutions to a phenomenon that is putting the brakes on productivity in our industry.
For instance, while many of us instinctively know that many hours spent in meetings are wasted, it might come as a surprise that workers unnecessarily spend over five hours per week distracted by notifications and switching between apps.
