Arizona files consumer fraud lawsuit against Google – Finance- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Arizona filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday, alleging that the US tech giant used “deceptive” and “unfair” practices to obtain the location data of users.
“Google collects detailed information about its users, including their physical locations, to target users for advertising. Often, this is done without the users’ consent or knowledge,” the state’s attorney general Mark Brnovich said in a tweet on Wednesday.
The suit comes as technology companies have been facing regulatory scrutiny globally over their policies and data monitoring practices.
“The Attorney General and the contingency fee lawyers filing this lawsuit appear to have mischaracterized our services. We have always built privacy features into our products and provided robust controls for location data”, a Google spokesman said in an emailed statement.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and argues that the maker of the Android smartphone operating system had set its mobile software such that it deceived device owners about the protections afforded to their personal data.
“When consumers try to opt out of Google’s collection of location data, the company is continuing to find misleading ways to obtain information and use it for profit,” Brnovich said in an interview with the Washington Post.
In February, New Mexico attorney general Hector Balderas sued Google, alleging that its educational software collects young students’ personal information without the required parental consent.
The world’s top search engine sells its Chromebook laptops to schools around the world alongside its free or low-cost G Suite for Education software package, which includes email and writing tools.

45% of Indians Do Not Back Up Their Data and Files- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Avast conducted an online survey before World Backup Day to raise awareness around the importance of securing data. The survey results reveal that 45% of Indians do not back up their data or files, risking data loss should they be destroyed or deleted.
Reasons Indians do not back up their data
Of those who do not back up their data, nearly 34% claim they don’t have any data or files that are important enough to back up. Further reasons given were:
· 32% don’t know how to back up their data
· 22% want to, but forget
· 22% want to, but don’t have time
How Indians back up their data
Of those who do back up their data, nearly 42% Indians back up to a cloud storage, 36% back up their data to an external hard drive, 23% back up to a USB or flash disk, 18% back up their phone to their PC, and 10% back up to a network storage drive. When asked how often they back up their data, Indians said:
· At least once a month: 53%
· Continuously: 12%
· Every 1-6 months: 12%
· Every 6-12 months: 15%
· Less often than yearly: 7%
When it comes to iPhone and Android phone owners, the percentage that back up is nearly the same, 69% and 70% respectively. How frequently they back up varies with 67% of iPhone users backing up their data at least once a month, while only 59% of Android users do the same. Twenty-one percent of iPhone owners claim to back up continuously, and 13% of Android owners claim to do the same.
The reasons Android and iPhone device owners gave for not backing up also varied a bit. iPhone owners appear to think their data is more valuable than Android owners. Only a quarter of iPhone owners don’t back up because they don’t think their data is important, versus 39% of Android owners who think the same. The percentage of smartphone owners that don’t know how to back up their data doesn’t vary much between iPhone and Android owners, with 13% and 17% claiming not knowing how to, respectively. Thirteen percent of iPhone owners and 12% of Android owners forget to back up. When it comes to not having time to back up, 38% of iPhone owners and 12% of Android owners gave this as a reason.
Consequences of failing to back up
Data loss can be caused by users accidentally deleting their data themselves, hardware damage and failure, as well as malware, causing valuable data such as photos, videos, documents, and messages to be lost forever. Ransomware and other malware, such as wipers, can either encrypt or completely destroy files, and there is no guarantee that files can be decrypted if a ransom is paid. Between February 15 and March 15, 2020, Avast protected 9,733 Indian users from 87,815 attempted ransomware attacks.
The top three ransomware strains during this time were:
· WannaCry
· VirLock
· Sodinokibi
“The results are surprising, especially surprising is the amount of people that don’t back up their data and the amount of people that don’t know how to back up their data and files. It could be that many aren’t aware they are backing up, as it could be happening automatically, in the background, however, others really might not be backing up at all, thinking it is not worth it. Losing personal documents, photos and videos can be a painful experience and it’s not until this happens that they realize how valuable it actually is,” said Luis Corrons, Security Evangelist at Avast. “It’s important to back up data on a regular basis, keeping memories, captured in the form of photos and videos, safe and secure.”
Tips to best back up data
Back up to two locations: When it comes to backing up data, one can never be too careful. If anything happens to one form of back up, everything could be lost. It’s therefore recommended to back up data to two different locations, like the cloud, and a physical storage, like an external hard drive.
Disconnect: External hard drives should be disconnected after a back up is performed in order to protect them from malware like ransomware, which can spread from the computer to attached devices.
Automatically back up: Most cloud storage services offer an automatic backup option, which is advisable to activate, so that data is automatically backed up and secured.

No large files during day and evening, Comms Alliance pleads – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Australia’s telecommunications industry body the Communications Alliance is asking broadband subscribers to consider ways to lower data traffic during peak hours to mitigate network overloading caused by an increasing number of people self-isolating and working from home.
Although many internet providers have increased or fully removed data caps on customers’ monthly plans to help people working from home, Communications Alliance suggested that people generate less data traffic, and avoid downloading and uploading large files during peak times.
Peak times now include daytime hours, and CA said “it can make a big difference if you can plan ahead and download a movie or other large files between 9pm and 9am.”
Furthermore, if customers have a choice of image quality, they should pick standard definition (SD) over 1080p high definition (HD) or 4K Ultra HD for streaming video, the industry body advised.
Earlier this month, telcopreneur Bevan Slattery urged video streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Disney to put the brakes on video quality to preserve precious bandwidth on Australia’s residential connections for other users.
Slattery suggested that there would be no 4K video streams, with quality being limited to HD maximum, and ultimately dropping down to SD, as he feared that the capacity required by people working from home in large numbers would exceed what’s available on the NBN, especially over shared hybrid fibre coaxial networks.
Audio and video group calls should be scheduled at start times 10, 20, 40 or 50 minutes past the hour to ease dial-in congestion.
To reduce data volumes for group calls and meetings, CA said users should consider recommending audio-only online conferences.
If it’s difficult to place voice calls over mobile networks, CA said to try Wi-Fi calling if users have access to that option.
Should that not work and people still experience congestion and other issues, they should consider waiting and try again later if their calls are not urgent, CA suggested.
CA pleaded with broadband customers to try to be patient as telcos and their staff are doing their best in difficult times.
Another problem that the COVID-19 pandemic has created is disruption of call centres outsourced offshore, to provide IT, customer and technical support for Australian service providers, CA said.
This is occasionally causing headaches when customers move their service form one provider to another.
CA said the migration disruption is being addressed by the industry as a matter of the highest priority.

Melbourne TAFE data breach exposes 55k student, staff files – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Melbourne Polytechnic’s Preston Campus

The personal information of students and staff from one of Victoria’s largest TAFEs has been accessed in a data breach that exposed more than 50,000 files from held on institute’s IT systems.
Melbourne Polytechnic disclosed the “highly complex” data breach, which occurred sometime between September and December 2018, on Wednesday after extensive forensic analysis.
It said it was notified of the “data theft” in October 2019 following an investigation by Victoria Police and has spent the past months working to determine the extent and scale of the breach.
The individual allegedly responsible for the breach has been charged by police, with a trial expected later this year.
The breach is believed to have affected any staff, students and suppliers whose details were held on Melbourne Polytechnic’s IT systems between September and December 2018.
Melbourne Polytechnic is understood to have upwards of 50,000 students and staff across ten campuses.
Forensic analysis has concluded that 55,000 files containing personal, health and financial data were accessed. The breach did not affect the system where student performance records are held.
For the majority of affected individuals, access was gained to their Melbourne Polytechnic usernames, passwords and email addresses.
“It is possible that any information held in those Melbourne Polytechnic accounts at that time was exposed,” the institute said.
But it also warned that “a small number of people” may have also had passport, driver’s licence, credit or debit card, superannuation account, tax file number and Medicare details accessed.
Melbourne Polytechnic said it has begun contacting affected individuals whose personal data was accessed in the breach.
A personalised summary of the specific types of information that was access has been included for each affected individual.
In a statement, Melbourne Polytechnic CEO Frances Coppolillo apologised to staff, students and suppliers affected by the breach
“On behalf of Melbourne Polytechnic, I offer my sincere apologies to all the people affected by this data breach,” she said.
“In sharing your information, you expected us to keep it safe and I am sorry that we were not able to do so.
“We are deeply sorry for the impact that the theft of this personal data might have.”
Coppolillo said the institute had conducted an independent review of its cyber security procedures in light of the breach and was currently “implementing a range of improvements including software and hardware upgrades to better protect our IT systems”.
“This data breach was highly complex in nature and it has taken many months to fully understand its scale and impact, including identifying the names and contact details of the people affected and the details of how they were impacted by the breach,” she said.
“With the forensic analysis now complete, we have acted as quickly as possible to notify affected individuals and to support them to take the actions needed to protect themselves.
“I would also like to apologise for the length of time it has taken us to be able to share this information with the people concerned.”

Switzerland files criminal complaint over Crypto spying scandal – Networking – Security – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Swiss government has filed a criminal complaint over the US Central Intelligence Agency’s alleged use of a cryptography company as a front to spy on various governments’ secret communications, the Swiss attorney general’s office said on Sunday.
The complaint against persons unknown for alleged breaches of the law governing export controls follows recent reports on “Operation Rubicon”, which for decades involved the CIA and German BND spy services covertly reading other nations’ secret messages encoded with technology sold by Swiss firm Crypto AG.
The case of Crypto, which sold encryption devices and software while being secretly owned by US and German intelligence services that could freely read what it encrypted, is embarrassing for neutral Switzerland and could hurt its international reputation, particularly if it turned a blind eye.
Although the outlines of Operation Rubicon were known for years, new details about its scope and duration were made public last month by Swiss, German and US investigative journalists.
“The Office of the Attorney General confirms it has received a criminal complaint by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) dated Feb. 2, 2020 regarding possible violations of export control law,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement. SECO is part of the Swiss Economy Ministry.
The attorney general’s office will review the complaint before deciding whether to open criminal proceedings, the statement said, confirming a report by newspaper SonntagsZeitung.
A spokeswoman for Switzerland’s Economy Ministry confirmed that the complaint had been filed but declined to elaborate.
The technology Crypto sold to dozens of governments including those of Iran, India, Pakistan, Libya, Egypt, Chile, and Argentina had deliberate flaws or built-in back doors that made messages easily readable to US and German spies. In effect, those client countries paid millions to be spied on.
SonntagsZeitung said SECO, which is in charge of authorising exports of sensitive equipment, believes it was deceived into clearing the sale of Crypto’s machines and software, and argues it would never have done so had it known of the scheme.
The Swiss government has appointed a former Swiss Supreme Court justice to look into Operation Rubicon. He is due to report back by the end of June and the cabinet will be briefed.
But pressure is mounting for parliament to launch its own investigation to find out who in Switzerland knew about the scheme.

How To Unzip & Open Files On Android – Blog – 10 minute

Not all PC files work on your Android smartphone or tablet, but there are some exceptions. For example, you can unzip any archive files. Most smartphones these days have built-in file managers with unzip tools but if they don’t, you can certainly find a file manager in the app store that can unzip files for you.
Let’s take a look at how to unzip files and open them when using your Android smartphone or tablet.
How To Unzip Files On Android

For this guide, we will assume your Android smartphone doesn’t have a file manager with zipping capabilities. If you already have a file manager installed, you can try to repeat these steps with the pre-installed app.

First, visit the Google Play Store and download Files by Google.
Once installed, open Files by Google.
Give the app access to your storage when it asks for permissions.
Next, tap the Browse button at the bottom of the app.

Locate the folder the zip file is saved in. If you downloaded it from the internet, it’s likely to be in the downloads folder. Find the zip file and tap the extract button.

Once extracted, a pop-up menu will appear, telling you what files have been extracted. You can choose to delete the ZIP file here to save space on your smartphone. By default, the ZIP file will stay on your phone even though you’ve already extracted the files.
After that, tap Finished.

How To Create Zip Files On Android
Creating Zip files is also possible on Android, so long as you download an app with the right functionality.
Unfortunately most of the apps that offer this function aren’t exactly amongst the best Android apps available. Searching for zip apps is a minefield of intrusive ads, apps that crash or barely function, or apps that require unnecessary permissions to run, which strikes obvious privacy concerns.

Be careful when downloading these apps. For this guide, we recommend ZArchiver, which is ad-free, and only requests permissions to access files, as it should. ZArchiver doesn’t come without some bugs and issues, but it works most of the time.

Once you’ve installed ZArchiver, open the app. You’ll see a simple file navigator. Locate the folder that contains the files you’d like to zip.

Next, tap the three dots at the top and then select Create.
After, select Create Archive.

Choose the archive file type – go with .zip if you’re unsure – and then choose a name.
Next, click OK. You can then tap to select multiple files for your zip folder.

Once you’ve selected your files, tap the green tick at the bottom of the screen. If it was successful, you’ll see a message pop up saying archive successfully created and you’ll find the new archive file in the folder you created it in.

Why Should I Zip Files?
When you compress files into a .zip file, you are making it far easier to send and transfer multiple files at once. A single .zip file can include hundreds of other files and folders, which would be a nightmare to send individually.
On top of this, .zip files actually reduce the overall file size of your content. This means that you can store your files in compressed .zip files and save space on your storage. It becomes faster to send zipped files and it’s faster to download them because of the compression that takes place. Don’t worry, though – once a zip file is uncompressed, you’ll get all of your files in their original quality.
If you do transfer a lot of .zip files, make sure to delete the archives after uncompressing, because otherwise you’ll have both the .zip file contents and the original .zip, both of which will take up space on your storage.
The Best Zip and Unzip Apps for Android
We already suggested Zarchiver, but there are many alternative apps for compressing and decompressing files on Android.
As mentioned earlier, many of these have intrusive ads or ask for unnecessary app permissions. We have picked out two of the most reasonable options available so that you can stay away from an otherwise frustrating experience with these types of apps.
RAR by RARLAB
RAR is an app published by RARLAB, the same company responsible for the most popular zip tool online – WinRAR. Unlike WinRAR, the RAR Android app isn’t freeware. Instead, you get ads that appear as you use the app and you can pay to remove them. It’s not a one-time payment, either. Instead, you must pay $0.99 per year.

Occasionally, RAR will freeze or force stop, usually when trying to call in ads. But when it works, the functionality and UI of RAR is very straightforward. Simply tap to select files, archives, or folders, then tap the archive or decompress buttons at the top. There is also a trash button for deleting files.
RAR doesn’t request any unnecessary permissions.
WinZip – Zip UnZip Tool By WinZip Computing
With WinZip, you will see ads at the bottom of the display, which can be removed with a single $1.49 purchase. This also gives you access to cloud backups via Google Drive, Dropbox and ZipShare.
For usage, simply long-press files and folders in the file browser, then tap the zip button at the bottom of the display. You can also create new folders to organize files, and unzipping is as easy as long pressing the archive and tapping unzip.

Overall, the functionality on WinZip is a little more advanced than RAR. You can quickly send .zip files via mail from within the app, and the folder creation in-app. The only frustrating issue is that WinZip will start you at the root directory of your phone each time you create a new archive, which means you’ll need to tap through multiple folders in some cases, to get back to your previous folder.
WinZip doesn’t request any unnecessary permissions, so you won’t need to worry about any major privacy concerns.
Summary
As you can see, unzipping and opening files on Android is very straightforward. So long as you download a reliable app, you shouldn’t run into any issues.
We hope that this article has helped you to learn how to unzip files on Android. Do you have any questions about archiving apps on Android? Make sure to leave a comment with your thoughts and we will engage with you there.

This WhatsApp Bug Could Have Let Attackers Access Files On Your PCs – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A cybersecurity researcher today disclosed technical details of multiple high severity vulnerabilities he discovered in WhatsApp, which, if exploited, could have allowed remote attackers to compromise the security of billions of users in different ways.
When combined together, the reported issues could have even enabled hackers to remotely steal files from the Windows or Mac computer of a victim using the WhatsApp desktop app by merely sending a specially crafted message.
Discovered by PerimeterX researcher Gal Weizman and tracked as CVE-2019-18426, the flaws specifically resided in WhatsApp Web, a browser version of the world’s most popular messaging application that also powers its Electron-based cross-platform apps for desktop operating systems.

In a blog post published today, Weizman revealed that WhatsApp Web was vulnerable to a potentially dangerous open-redirect flaw that led to persistent cross-site scripting attacks, which could have been triggered by sending a specially crafted message to the targeted WhatsApp users.

In the case when an unsuspecting victim views the malicious message over the browser, the flaw could have allowed attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of WhatsApp’s web domain.
Whereas, when viewed through the vulnerable desktop application, the malicious code runs on the recipients’ systems in the context of the vulnerable application.

Moreover, the misconfigured content security policy on the WhatsApp web domain also allowed the researcher to load XSS payloads of any length using an iframe from a separate attacker-controlled website on the Internet.
“If the CSP rules were well configured, the power gained by this XSS would have been much smaller. Being able to bypass the CSP configuration allows an attacker to steal valuable information from the victim, load external payloads easily, and much more,” the researcher said.

As shown in the screenshot above, Weizman demonstrated the remote file read attack over WhatsApp by accessing the content of the hosts file from a victim’s computer.
Besides this, the open-redirect flaw could have had also been used to manipulate URL banners, a preview of the domain WhatsApp displays to the recipients when they receive a message containing links, and trick users into falling for phishing attacks.
Weizman responsibly reported these issues to the Facebook security team last year, who then patched the flaws, released an updated version of its desktop application, and also rewarded Weizman with $12,500 under the company’s bug bounty program.

The Best Ways to Transfer Large Files Online – Blog – 10 minute

Services like Dropbox and Google Drive make it easy to store and share files across the web, but they have limitations. For instance, the free version of Google Drive only provides 15GB of storage (which is a lot for a free service) while the free version of Dropbox gives users a comparatively lacking 2GB of storage.
If you need to transfer a huge file of more than 15GB (like an edited video file, for example) then neither one of these services will cut it. What you need is a dedicated service for transferring files. This article will walk you through several of the best ways to transfer large files online.

We will also suggest a few ways to make shuffling huge amounts of data easier. We have covered some other services already, as well as some for sending large videos. We’ve also covered WeTransfer, a dedicated way of moving big files.
MediaFire is a cloud storage system that offers up to 50GB of free storage, with 1 TB of storage coming in at just $3.75 per month. If you have the free plan, there’s a maximum upload size of 20GB, but this restriction goes away with one of the paid options.

MediaFire has apps on a variety of devices, so you can transfer large files online from your mobile devices as well as from a laptop.
pCloud is a cloud storage service that has a dedicated file transfer system. That said, it’s a fantastic option. There is no limit on upload size or upload speed. If you have fast internet, you can upload large files quickly without artificial bottlenecks placed by the service to conserve bandwidth.

pCloud also provides multiple features that make it even more appealing, like the ability to spread your files across multiple services to keep them safe.
pCloud offers a free trial so you can test out the service, but you will need to subscribe to continue using the service after this trial. Subscriptions are available in both monthly and yearly plans, but if you want to save money, go for the annual payment—it shaves off a few bucks overall.
Masv is the go-to service for people that need to transfer tremendously large files online. It’s designed for videos, large graphics, and other types of media that are not email-friendly sizes. It’s a popular service among video editors and freelancers because of the ability to move files larger than 20GB. Masv is also a bit different when it comes to pricing.

Rather than a subscription model, Masv is a pay-as-you-go service. You will pay per gigabyte of data. While that might seem pricey, it actually helps cut down on wasteful spending because you are only paying for what you actually use.
If you want to try out Masv, there is a seven-day free trial that gives you 100GB of free data transfers. It’s a great way to test the service without committing to it.
FTP
If you’re more tech-savvy than most, FTP clients are always an option. File Transfer Protocol is the old-school way of moving data around, but these days it is more focused on the business side of things.

There isn’t much call for consumer FTP use, which means the available options can be a bit on the complicated side. If you want to find out more, we have a dedicated FTP article you should look into.
How To Make Transferring Files Easier
Many people make the mistake of sending files in their raw formats, but that only makes the task more difficult. Here are a few tricks for reducing the size of huge files that will make them easier to transfer and save you a lot of hassle—without sacrificing the quality of the file itself.
Compress Data By Zipping It
There are multiple services available for turning a normal file into a .zip file. WinRAR and 7zip are both well-known not just for their storied history, but also because of the memes. Let’s face it: the true 1% are those that paid for WinRAR.

You can also compress data in macOS by selecting it, right clicking, and choosing Compress.
Split Files Into Smaller Sections
If you are transferring an unfinished file to an editor, ask if you can send the files in pieces. Breaking a two-hour video into 30-minute segments might result in 4 different files, but those files will be much smaller than a single entity.
This is a particularly useful trick for someone with a finicky internet connection; the last thing you want is for the file to almost finish its transfer before a dropped connection tanks the entire process.
Check The File Type
Some file types are significantly larger than others due to resolution and quality. While there are times when you can’t avoid high-resolution files, if it isn’t strictly necessary then using a smaller file type might be an option.
For example, JPG is such a popular format because it compresses the data to an extreme extent. The downside is that it also loses something in the process. On the other hand, TIF is a “lossless” format that doesn’t result in artifacting—but the files won’t be as small as JPG files.
Paid Versus Free Services
In the modern world, there are a huge number of services that allow you to transfer even gargantuan files for free. For the most part, there’s no downside to using these services. A paid service does offer a few benefits that might appeal to you, especially if you want to keep things simple. Paid services also tend to have higher transfer rates and higher storage capacities.
There is no right or wrong answer. If you need to transfer files between 15 and 20GB, you can likely use a free service, but larger than that will require a payment. Evaluate the best ways to transfer large files online and choose the one that’s right for you.

Nintendo Files Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Another Large ROM Site

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Nintendo owns some of the most iconic intellectual property in games, and it’s taking a stand against ROM sites. After securing a win against two major ROM distributors, Nintendo has set its sights on another website called RomUniverse. Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the owner of RomUniverse seeking millions of dollars in damages and demanding that the site shut down.

According to the legal filing, RomUniverse is one of the largest unauthorized distributors of Nintendo games. It also seems to be a particularly brazen enterprise, featuring a Nintendo-themed background and paid memberships (a one-time $30 fee) that allow users to download as much content as they want. Without the membership, you can only download three items per week. RomUniverse also hosts movies and ebooks, and these are direct downloads. At least torrent sites have the advantage of not storing infringing files on their servers.

Nintendo points to numerous examples of infringing content including ROMs for the current-gen Switch consoleSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce and older systems like the 3DS, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and NES. Simply having ROM files isn’t illegal, but it’s something of a gray area. You’re probably in the clear if you make backups of games you already own. However, making those ROMs available for download is just asking for trouble, and Nintendo is famously strict about the use of its IP.

The company’s lawsuit seeks $2 million in damages for trademark infringement across the site plus $150,000 per infringing file. That’s where the damages would really stack up. There are thousands of Nintendo ROMs on the site. Just the selection of Switch titles would push the damages into the tens of millions. In addition to damages, Nintendo demands that the website operator shut down the site and transfer ownership to Nintendo.

It has been just over a year since Nintendo filed a lawsuit against LoveROMS.com and LoveRETRO.co, both of which were owned Jacob Mathias. By late 2018, Mathias had agreed to a $12 million settlement with Nintendo. The sites temporarily went offline shortly after Nintendo filed suit, and later became apology pages. Peloton files publicly for IPO – gpgmail

Peloton, the well-funded maker of high-tech bikes and treadmills, has revealed documents for its upcoming initial public offering. The business previously submitted a confidential draft submission of its S-1 statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June.

The company will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol PTON.

Peloton, founded in 2012, raised $550 million in venture capital funding last year at a valuation of $4 billion. The startup, which initially struggled greatly to convince venture capitalists of its vision, has since inspired a new wave of fitness tech companies to launch, including a smart mirror company appropriately named “Mirror.”
