If you want to know why the worst president in US history currently stands a very good chance of winning again, consider a few facts. Donald Trump’s re-election campaign is already in full flow, brimming with cash, drenching social media with targeted ads, and reaping oceans of data on voters.
The impeachment drama is, predictably enough, the perfect opportunity to put out material that plays to the idea of Trump as a noble maverick, struggling against the liberal conspiracy implied by his online questionnaires: “Do you agree that President Trump has done nothing wrong? Do you believe the Democrats will try and make up LIES to impeach the president?”
The Democrats’ most likely challenger, by contrast, made headlines last year when he cut his online ad budget, and decided to concentrate on TV advertising: a very odd decision by Joe Biden, but there we are.
What really helps Trump is Facebook. Last October, it became clear that, whatever its collective remorse about the role it had played in Trump’s election three years before, Mark Zuckerberg’s company had quietly exempted advertising by parties and candidates from its regulations on truth and falsehood. After the flurry of criticism that followed, there was speculation that Facebook might shift – on both that policy, and the kind of micro-targeting of adverts that makes it almost impossible to scrutinise what a candidate is saying to voters, and why (the Trump campaign is currently reckoned to be launching more than 1,000 new micro-targeted Facebook ads every day).
But earlier this month there came confirmation that on these two crucial points, company policy was going to remain unchanged.
Cosmetically at least, some other internet giants have been tightening up. Not that it absolves Twitter of much of the blame for spreading hatred and misinformation – or indeed, hosting Trump’s personal feed – but in October last year it banned almost all political advertising. Again, Google is hardly free of responsibility for encouraging the worst kind of online politicking, but it has stopped political advertisers targeting people based on their political affiliation, and promised to take action against “demonstrably false claims”.
Facebook, by contrast, isn’t moving. It may have shone some light on political ads via new transparency tools, announced that users will now have the option of seeing fewer ads about “political and social issues”, and increased its efforts against foreign interference, but the most egregious aspect of the way it treats politics remains untouched.
When I contacted the company’s press office, I received an email from a global “CEO advisory firm” called Teneo that requested I paraphrase Facebook’s company line – that it is not its role to “referee” political debates and prevent politicians’ messages reaching their intended audience; and that targeted ads are considered a good thing not just by political campaigns, but charities and NGOs. Self-evidently, the problem with that defence is that it leaves candidates and campaigns free to lie with impunity, and micro-targeting makes doing so even more mouthwatering.
An example: in October last year, Trump’s organisation released an ad falsely alleging that Biden had offered the Ukrainian authorities $1bn if they dropped an investigation into a company linked to his son. CNN refused to air it; Facebook had no such qualms. There will be plenty more of this stuff.

It is interesting to note that Facebook’s hands-off approach to political lying has reportedly been endorsed by Peter Thiel, the Trump-backing billionaire who sits on Facebook’s board. If you want to understand the kind of thinking he supports, a good place to start is the recent leaked memo written by Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, Facebook’s “augmented and virtual reality vice-president”. Trump won three years ago, he says, because “he ran the single best digital ad campaign I’ve ever seen from any advertiser”, and this year Facebook’s ad policies “very well [sic] may lead to the same result”.
When it comes to the relevance of Facebook’s political ads policy to Trump’s chances, Bosworth goes all mystical. “I find myself thinking of the Lord of the Rings at this moment,” he says. “Specifically when Frodo offers the ring to Galadriel and she imagines using the power righteously, at first, but knows it will eventually corrupt her. As tempting as it is to use the tools available to us to change the outcome, I am confident we must never do that or we will become that which we fear.”
But what of the fact that Facebook’s algorithms privilege the most hysterical, mendacious, loathsome kind of political discourse? “The algorithms are primarily exposing the desires of humanity itself, for better or worse,” says Bosworth, going on to claim that “corporate paternalism” is not the answer, and that “giving people tools to make their own decisions is good, but trying to force decisions upon them rarely works (for them or for you)”. Facebook, in other words, just presents you with the poison, often in a micro-targeted form that makes it even more tempting: if you want to imbibe it, that’s up to you. In this vision, Tolkien-esque cod-philosophy is less relevant than reckless libertarianism. Such is the variety of corporate responsibility offered by arguably the most powerful corporation in the world.
The traditional media might still understand elections in terms of speeches, campaign launches and set-piece interviews. But as evidenced by Boris Johnson’s victory after weeks of eluding any meaningful scrutiny, this is not where politics really happens any more. Facebook offers a dual enticement to campaigns and candidates: you can spend no end of money spreading falsehoods, and also be assured that you are using the most effective means of political communication anyone has ever invented.
It hardly absolves Labour of its serial failures, but this formula was right at the heart of the Tory win in December: towards the end of the election, it was revealed that 88% of Conservative advertisements published on Facebook over a four-day period contained claims deemed to be misleading by Full Fact, a fact-checking organisation used by Facebook itself (the figure for Labour material was 7%).
Honourable debate might have symbolically breathed its last on the occasion in 2008 when Senator John McCain silenced an audience member at one of his rallies when she implied that Barack Obama was not American. There may well be chilling auguries of the future in the kind of facts pointed out last week by my colleague Emily Bell – that the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, an expert at internet politics, has never held a press conference, that the White House press secretary has not delivered a public briefing in six months – and, for that matter, that the new British government apparently wants precious little to do with mainstream news and current affairs programmes.
We are, it seems, in the opening stages of a completely new age, in which victory will usually go, as the New York Times put it the other day, to those who specialise in “emotionally charged, hyper-partisan content, regardless of its factual accuracy”, and very nasty techniques indeed: witness the 2016 Trump campaign targeting anti-Hillary Clinton material at black Democrat supporters via Facebook, so as to suppress turnout.
Something lodges itself in my head anew every time I write about Facebook: that even if it began with benign intentions, it has long since failed to match its power with the commensurate responsibility. After a fashion, Zuckerberg himself seems to agree that there is a case for action. “There are a number of areas where I believe governments establishing clearer rules would be helpful, including around elections, harmful content, privacy, and data portability,” he said in his recent new year message.
What is actually required is enforced break-up, tight subsequent regulation and the belated realisation that Facebook has come close to tearing democracy to pieces in the name of bringing people closer together – all thoughts now fashionable among people at the top of the Democratic party. Facebook’s unprecedented corporate power, however, offers an answer to that: the fact that Trump may well beat whichever Democrat is selected to challenge him, using all the shadowy sophistry Facebook puts at his disposal.

Facebook must disclose app records for Massachusetts probe, judge rules – Benchmarking Change- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Facebook Inc has been ordered by a Massachusetts judge to turn over material to the state’s attorney general about thousands of apps that the social media company suspected may have misused customer data.
In a decision made public on Friday, Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Brian Davis said Attorney General Maura Healey had demonstrated a “substantial need” for the material, as she investigates Facebook’s privacy practices.
Healey began her probe in March 2018, following news that Facebook had let British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica access data for as many as 87 million users.
Cambridge’s clients had included US President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign.
Davis said Facebook did not show that most of the material Healey sought, including the identities of developers behind suspect apps, was protected by attorney-client privilege or an attorney “work product” that did not need to be disclosed.
“Only Facebook knows the identity of these apps and developers, and there is no other way for the attorney general to obtain this information on her own,” Davis wrote.
Facebook said it was reviewing its options and may appeal.
“We are disappointed that the Massachusetts Attorney General and the court didn’t fully consider our arguments on well-established law, including the work product doctrine,” it said.
According to court papers, the Menlo Park, California-based company’s own probe led it to suspend 69,000 apps last September, mostly because their developers did not cooperate.
About 10,000 of these apps were found to have potentially misused user data.
Healey welcomed Davis’ decision, which is dated January 16.
“Facebook simply telling its users that their data is safe without the facts to back it up does not work for us,” Healey said in a statement. “We are pleased that the court ordered Facebook to tell our office which other app developers may have engaged in conduct like Cambridge Analytica.”
The judge gave Facebook 90 days to turn over the material Healey sought.
Healey’s probe is one of several by state attorneys general regarding Facebook’s ability to protect user data.
Last July, Facebook agreed to pay a record US$5 billion fine to resolve a US Federal Trade Commission probe into its privacy practices.

Facebook says technical error caused vulgar translation of Chinese leader’s name – Cloud – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Facebook Inc on Saturday blamed a technical error for Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s name appearing as “Mr Shithole” in posts on its platform when translated into English from Burmese, apologising for any offence caused.
The error came to light on the second day of a visit by the president to the Southeast Asian country, where Xi and state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi signed dozens of agreements covering massive Beijing-backed infrastructure plans.
A statement about the visit published on Suu Kyi’s official Facebook page was littered with references to “Mr Shithole” when translated to English, while a headline in local news journal the Irrawaddy appeared as “Dinner honors president shithole”.
It was not clear how long the issue lasted but Google’s translation function did not show the same error.
“We fixed a technical issue that caused incorrect translations from Burmese to English on Facebook. This should not have happened and we are taking steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We sincerely apologize for the offense this has caused,” Facebook said in a statement.
The Facebook system did not have President Xi Jinping’s name in its Burmese database and guessed at the translation, the company said. Translation tests of similar words that start with “xi” and “shi” in Burmese also produced “shithole”, it added.
China’s foreign ministry declined comment.
Facebook is blocked in mainland China. But it is not blocked in Hong Kong and mainland companies advertise elsewhere on the platform, making China Facebook’s biggest country for revenue after the United States. It is setting up a new engineering team to focus specifically on the lucrative Chinese advertising business, Reuters reported last week.
Facebook has faced numerous problems with translation from Burmese in the past. In 2018 it temporarily removed the function after a Reuters report showed the tool was producing bizarre results.
An investigation documented how the company was failing in its efforts to combat vitriolic Burmese language posts about Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims, some 730,000 of whom fled a military crackdown in 2017 that the UN has said was conducted with “genocidal intent”.
It also showed the translation feature was flawed, citing an anti-Rohingya post advocating killing Muslims that was translated into English as “I shouldn’t have a rainbow in Myanmar”.

Joe Biden wants to make Facebook liable for users’ content by revoking Section 230 – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: While most critics of social media giants agree that we need better regulation to increase accountability, Joe Biden thinks an easier route would be to repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act that gives those companies the excuse of enabling free speech and giving users a voice.
Joe Biden isn’t a fan of Facebook, and likely not a fan of fake campaign sites that troll and garner more attention than his actual campaign.
The Democratic front-runner told the New York Times during an 80-minute interview that to him, the Facebook CEO is “a real problem. […] He knows better.”
Biden alluded to the fact that Facebook, like other social giants and owners of big digital platforms don’t want to take full editorial responsibilities and enforce a strict filter on what can be posted on them. In the case of Facebook, Zuckerberg says he wants it to be a tool that gives the little guys a powerful voice, and as such he will prioritize free speech over policing content.

This means that Facebook can find excuses that all stem from Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which offers special protections for internet companies. However, Biden thinks Facebook is not just an internet company and that Section 230 should be revoked to make it easy to hold such companies responsible for “propagating falsehoods they know to be false.”
Biden also advocates for setting similar privacy standards to those imposed by the EU. But his eyes are set on the 20-year-old Communications Decency Act, and Republicans have expressed similar criticisms and proposed several changes to the law.
Meanwhile, other political figures are proposing even more extreme measures against executives of companies that currently pay a relatively small price for their privacy violations and their inaction on misinformation campaigns. One notable example is the “Mind Your Own Business” act proposed by Senator Ron Wyden, which could punish those like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg directly.
In any case, Biden is the only presidential candidate that has asked for Section 230 to be repealed. Last year, President Donald Trump said he had a “constructive meeting” with Mark Zuckerberg about internet regulation and preventing the dissemination of harmful content, but only discussed those issues in more general lines.

Facebook is betting big on selling ad space to Chinese companies – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Facebook is currently banned in China, but that doesn’t mean it can’t tap its potential in other ways. Many Chinese companies want to use the social giant’s global presence and powerful ad tools to get ahead of the competition and expand their customer base, so Facebook is building a team dedicated to helping them out.
Last week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg officially gave up on annual challenges, opting for longer-term goals that cover the next decade. Among them are the fight to give more power to the people and a push for establishing rules around issues that are long in the tooth, such as election integrity, privacy, and the sanity of Facebook’s online platforms.
Meanwhile, there’s a lot of money on the table for its advertising business, especially in China. Despite Zuckerberg’s criticism of the region and its tendency to govern big platforms with censorship and strict rules, Facebook is building a new team of engineers in Singapore that will be dedicated solely to driving its advertising business in Southeast Asia.

Reuters notes the biggest challenge will be to develop ad-buying tools that Chinese customers can use to overcome internet restrictions imposed by the government. China is the second-largest source of revenue after the United States, with Facebook selling an estimated $5 billion worth of ad space in the region.
While Zuckerberg is unable to operate Facebook in China, companies, like TikTok owner ByteDance have used Facebook’s ad tools to propagate to a global audience. By the second half of 2019, ByteDance shifted to build its own advertising business to compete with Facebook’s.
Still, that leaves many small startups that need the power of Facebook to achieve visibility in a crowded global landscape. According to Raggy Lau, who runs a small ad agency in China, serving 30 companies, Facebook will see a significant demand for its ad tools this year and beyond.

IPA: Facebook micro-targeted political ads ‘a clear and present threat’ to elections- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) has taken a strong stance against Facebook’s decision to continue allowing unchecked microtargeted political ads on its network, a tool the trade body says has been “demonstrably abused in the recent past”.
Nigel Gwilliam, director of media affairs at the IPA issued the condemnation after Facebook announced it would not reduce the targeting on, or fact-check, political ads it enables during elections.
There’s growing demand for it to do so and it is becoming ever more isolated by resisting. In November, Google stepped away from micro-targeted political ads, understanding the difficulties that can arise from running them. Twitter also stopped running them and TikTok never has. Snap will continue to, but they will be fact-checked with the app citing its importance in inspiring greater turnout of young people during elections.
Facebook’s role in democracy is coming under increasing scrutiny. Its acceptance of political ads while many other networks turn them away comes after its well-documented struggles to police misinformation and the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica scandal which saw its data weaponised to influence voters.
Gwilliam said: “Advertising technology designed for the promotion of products and services has been weaponised for political messaging. In a democracy, political ideas need to be aired and debated in the public square. Microtargeting has the potential to subvert this, especially when combined with the absence of fact-checking or any other message regulation.”
He pointed a loophole in current UK advertising regulation, chiefly that the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) does not cover political advertising.
Gwilliam added: “This is a clear and present threat to politics in democracies. While we support regulation of political messaging, we do not believe this will be introduced in the foreseeable future.”
As a result, the IPA has made two calls:
“We endorse transparency in the world of political advertising online as the next best thing to regulation. For this reason, we call for a publicly accessible, platform-neutral, machine-readable register of all political ads and ad data online.
“A ban on microtargeted political advertising online. If you don’t limit the granularity of targeting, especially in a world of growing automation/AI, you risk a sheer volume of different messages overwhelming any transparency measure like the proposed register.”
Trying to get ahead of this as the 2020 US election approaches, Facebook is running branded content in trusted media outlining its efforts to make its political advertising strong, trustworthy and transparent.
Axios sponsored content claimed that ‘Facebook creates industry-leading transparency for political ads’. Of course, the tool crashed days before the most recent UK general election.
Somewhat less well-received was a piece that ran in Teen Vogue explaining ‘How Facebook Is Helping Ensure the Integrity of the 2020 Election’. Questions emerged whether it was undisclosed advertorial or not. Teen Vogue blamed a labelling error before later deleting the piece.
On Thursday 9 January, Facebook did announce new transparency features and allowed users to control how many political ads they see. The ads will still be checked by third-party media companies and non-profits, all the more difficult when posts are microtargeted, often invisible to those who would scrutinise them, especially when transparency tools break.
Facebook’s defence is that “people should be able to hear from those who wish to lead them, warts and all, and that what they say should be scrutinized and debated in public”. The platform could be a powerful tool for political discourse if it hosted better quality, and rigorous content, and afforded better tools to tackle misinformation. It pulls significant revenue from political ads and appears reluctant to let go of that income stream. CNN branded it ‘a very dangerous decision for 2020’.
There is evidence of state-backed misinformation on the platform. Some evidence we have of these dangers, Facebook admitted Russian troll farm content reached as much as 126 million people during the 2016 election. Specially created Groups were also employed to drive dissent and misinformation.
As the public’s awareness of microtargeted ads rises, seemingly so does the public’s distaste. Steve Kuncewicz, partner at BLM Law firm and specialist in social media law, previously told Tempemail: “Microtargeted ads are becoming a riskier proposition in general, and the debate around political advertising looks to be giving some of the major platforms an opportunity to nail their colours to a particular mast.”

Facebook said on Thursday it was making some changes to its approach to political ads, including allowing users to turn off certain ad-targeting tools, but the updates stop far short of critics’ demands and what rival companies have pledged to do.
The world’s biggest social network has vowed to curb political manipulation of its platform, after failing to counter alleged Russian interference and the misuse of user data by defunct political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica in 2016.
But ahead of the US presidential election in November 2020, Facebook is struggling to quell criticism of its relatively hands-off ads policies. In particular it has come under fire after it exempted politicians’ ads from fact-checking standards applied to other content on its network.
Facebook said that in addition to rolling out a tool enabling individual users to choose to see fewer political and social issue ads on Facebook and its photo-sharing app Instagram, it will also make more ad audience data publicly available.
In contrast, Twitter banned political ads in October, while Alphabet Inc’s Google said it would stop letting advertisers target election ads using data such as public voter records and general political affiliations.
Other online platforms like Spotify, Pinterest and TikTok have also issued bans.
In a blog post, Facebook’s director of product management Rob Leathern said the company considered imposing limits like Google’s, but decided against them as internal data indicated most ads run by US presidential candidates are broadly targeted, at audiences larger than 250,000 people.
“We have based (our policies) on the principle that people should be able to hear from those who wish to lead them, warts and all,” Leathern wrote.
The expanded ad audience data features will be rolled out in the first quarter of this year and Facebook plans to deploy the political ads control starting in the United States early this summer, eventually expanding this preference to more locations.
Custom audiences
Another change will be to allow users to choose to stop seeing ads based on an advertiser’s “Custom Audience” and that will apply to all types of advertising, not only political ads.
The “Custom Audiences” feature lets advertisers upload lists of personal data they maintain, like email addresses and phone numbers. Facebook then matches that information to user accounts and shows the advertiser’s content to those people.
However, Facebook will not give users a blanket option to turn off the feature, meaning they will have to opt-out of seeing ads for each advertiser one by one, a spokesman told Reuters.
The change will also not affect ad targeting via Facebook’s Lookalike Audiences tool, which uses the same uploads of personal data to direct ads at people with similar characteristics to those on the lists, the spokesman said.
Leathern said in the post the company would make new information publicly available about the audience size of political ads in the company’s Ad Library, showing approximately how many people the advertisers aimed to reach.
The changes follow a New York Times report this week of an internal memo by senior Facebook executive Andrew Bosworth, who told employees the company had a duty not to tilt the scales against US President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
Bosworth, a close confidant of chief executive Mark Zuckerberg who subsequently made his post public, wrote that he believed Facebook was responsible for Trump’s election in 2016, but not because of misinformation or Trump’s work with Cambridge Analytica.
Rather, he said, the Trump campaign used Facebook’s advertising tools most effectively.

Facebook says it will let users choose to see fewer political ads on their feed – Blog – 10 minute

In the absence of regulation, Facebook thinks it’s better for would-be leaders to have a voice so the public can have a basis for their arguments when they debate their choices.
The social giant recently said it would ban deepfakes on its platform as a way to protect the integrity of the 2020 presidential election, but it looks like it still won’t back down from its decision to let politicians lie in ads.
In a blog post earlier today, Facebook announced that it will keep its controversial ad policy firmly in place, along with all the microtargeting tools that allow political advertisers to control their reach down to very small groups of people based on specific criteria.
To be fair, the company’s huge platforms are the reason why liberals are asking for stricter regulations that put more responsibility on the shoulders of social media giants, while conservatives complain that their views are misrepresented or suppressed.
Twitter has chosen to ban political ads altogether, Snap says it’s fact-checking all of them, and so is Google, who will also limit microtargeting. Back in November 2019, Facebook reportedly asked Republican and Democrat advertisers for feedback on its political ads policy, which some interpreted as signs that things could change.

However, the only changes coming are small tweaks like increased transparency for its ad library so that journalists and researchers can easily find and study the various ads run by political advertisers. And since many users have requested the ability to see fewer campaign and social issue ads in their news feeds, the company says it will see to that in the coming months for both Facebook and Instagram users.
If you’re wondering why Facebook insists on keeping its ad policy unchanged, the company says it explored several possibilities but found that limiting ads and targeting tools would deprive non-profits and smaller organizations of their power to express themselves at scale. Facebook’s Director of Product Management, Rob Leathern, further noted that 85 percent of ad spend for US political candidates is homing in on audiences larger than 250,000 people.
Leathern believes that “in the absence of regulation, Facebook and other companies are left to design their own policies. We have based ours on the principle that people should be able to hear form those who wish to lead them, warts and all, and that what they say should be scrutinized and debated in public.”
To put things in perspective, Facebook will hold its current stance on political ads until regulators come up with bills like the proposed Honest Ads Act, which is meant to increase accountability for companies that own big digital platforms. Last year, a former Facebook executive said the company can’t stay out of politics, which is why it’s calling for regulation to catch up with the new reality that social media has a powerful influence that can easily be abused.

Branded content body on Teen Vogue Facebook gaffe: ‘Don’t be untruthful, not worth the risk’- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Teen Vogue has endured heavy criticism for publishing a fluffy Q&A with five female Facebook executives who ‘explained’ how the social network ‘protects elections’. What looked to be an undisclosed advertorial landed after the social network came under fire for its negative impacts on the democratic process ahead of the 2020 election.
Facebook continues to face questions around its acceptance of political ads given other networks turn them away, its well documented struggles to police misinformation and the fallout out of the Cambridge Analytica scandal which saw its data weaponised to influence voters.
However, on Wednesday 8 January Teen Vogue ran ‘How Facebook Is Helping Ensure the Integrity of the 2020 Election’.
The piece originally ran without a byline or an advertorial label. It said: “As the 2020 campaign gains speed, Facebook is taking measures to protect against foreign interference and stop the spread of misinformation… Facebook is at the forefront of encouraging civic discourse.”
Five top Facebook execs went on to list the many steps it is taken to ‘ensure the integrity of the election’. After being called out by readers and jounrlaists on social networks, Teen Vogue amended the piece with an advertorial label. However, Facebook then denied paying for it. The story has since been deleted after a now deleted tweet from a Teen Vogue Twitter account admitting it was unsure what the feature was supposed to be.
The title blamed “labelling confusion” but it appears to have originated from Facebook’s sponsorship of the three-day Teen Vogue Summit last November. The article was at some stage a part of that package and was uploaded to the CMS, reports The Wall Street Journal citing someone close to the incident.
The incident has raised wider questions about disclosure around branded content. What’s New In Publishing reported that publisher branded content revenue grew by 40% into the first half of 2019, the negative side of this growth is that the media could be used to gloss over corporate shortcomings.
However, there are rules in place to ensure publishers do not disguise paid-for pieces as editorial. Andrew Canter, global chief executive of the Branded Content Marketing Association told Tempemail that brands need to be “extremely clear, honest and transparent about labelling” on advertorial content or risk a backlash.
This mishap garnered global press coverage. The New York Times dubbed it ‘the mystery of Teen Vogue’s disappearing Facebook article’. The Washington Post asked ‘Article or Ad?’.
Canter’s organisation helps create the ‘rules and regulations’ of the space, a code of conduct that members sign up to when they join. One of the most relevant rules is that “Members [whether marketers, publishers or owners of other media] should ensure that marketing communications are designed and presented in such a way that it is clear that they are marketing communications.”
Similar codes of conduct are in place globally to ensure a separation of church and state in the media.
On how to avoid gaffes like the Teen Vogue one, he said: “We always advise brands to be extremely clear, honest and transparent about labelling – if you are not clear you will get found out and it will damage your brand. This is not ‘rocket science’ and often reflects negatively on those who are trying to behave in the right way and within the rules.
“You need to ask yourself whether being untruthful is beneficial to your brand particularly as we move into a new decade with ‘purpose’ at the heart of an increasing number of marketing campaigns. It is a simple message – don’t do it, it is not worth the risk.”
