How Easy Offices and Croud used SEO and PPC to smooth the path for international expansion- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Croud won the ‘Integrated SEO & PPC’ category at Tempemail Search Awards Europe 2019 with its campaign for Easy Offices. Here, the agency reveals the challenges faced and the strategies used to deliver this successful project.
The challenge
Established in 1999, Easy Offices is one of the UK’s leading specialist advisers on serviced offices. They partner with office companies in London and throughout the UK to provide temporary offices for businesses needing short-term, flexible choices.
Easy Offices turned to Croud with the goal of becoming the biggest office space broker globally. This would be the first time the company would create brand awareness and reach outside of the UK through SEO.
The strategy
As Easy Offices’ long-standing search marketing partner, Croud had seen success with various SEO and PPC tactics across the UK account. Dynamic search ads (DSA) had proven particularly successful in the UK, driving a 7% month-on-month uplift in leads and 5% increase in enquiries for Easy Offices in that market, by allowing the office broker to tap into audiences looking for their services.
However, DSA relies on a well-developed website with lots of relevant content, and the Easy Offices site had little to no content for rest of the world and was noindex nofollow. This meant that Google couldn’t crawl the site to run DSA, nor did we have content in place to support the domain becoming visible across international market SERPs.
As such, Croud’s PPC and SEO teams worked closely together to come up with a data-driven strategy for driving visibility and conversions outside of the UK.
We needed to make sure that their global PPC budget was being used efficiently, while boosting organic traffic to their website in markets outside of the UK. Through an integrated, data-driven approach, the team aimed to find a way to optimise paid and organic search activity, in order to drive more impressions, clicks and conversions, while reducing cost.
The campaign
The first step was to understand how to prioritise which markets should have content produced and opened up for Google to index, to support Easy Offices in their global expansion ambitions.
We combined organic and paid data to understand which markets should be prioritised in terms of global content production. To determine the phased roll-out of SEO across markets, the Croud team conducted a search landscape analysis to better understand the current competition (using PPC competitors) and the commercial value of each market.
This analysis involved looking at metrics such as:

Total search volume for ranking keywords per market
Competition levels in each market
Average cost-per-click (CPC) of each market
Total cost to capture all of the search volume in each market via PPC (using CPC x search volume per keyword)
Number of enquiries from PPC for each market
Number of deals from PPC for each market
Total revenue from PPC for each market
Average deal value from PPC for each market

Following this analysis, we then looked at which markets over-indexed across the average values of the above metrics, giving each market an overall roll-out priority percentage score, in order to determine a top-three priority market list. This list was filtered to include only English-speaking markets to start with, which made the most sense for the business overall.
From this analysis, we determined that Australia – with a roll-out priority score of 89%, driven by under-average competition and above average CPC for PPC to attain visibility – made the most sense as our initial target market for content production.
The next step was to produce search-led content that aligned to PPC-targeted terms. We analysed a search query report from PPC conducted in the last 12 months to understand local market search behaviour. This approach meant that all content being produced was data-led, targeting key terms that had proven to deliver results for PPC in the Australian market. This data was also used to decide on four product landing pages for the highest revenue-driving queries.
We then utilised our global Croudie network, Croud’s unique network of 2,000+ on-demand digital marketing specialists across the globe, to write highly localised, unique copy for 12 Australian cities, and 83 office centres in those cities. We continually reviewed the best-performing ad copy and fed the insight back into the new pages’ metadata optimisation, encompassing page titles, meta descriptions and H1 tags.
With the newly created content published and indexed, the team were all set to launch dynamic search ads in Australia, in order to take advantage of the relevant content that was now on the Easy Offices website for the Australian market.
The results
DSA was launched in Australia in early September 2018, driving impressive results across the board for Easy Offices. Looking at the four months prior to launch (May – August 2018) versus the four months post-launch (September – December 2018), Easy Offices saw the following results across its PPC activity in Australia:

Impressions increased by 1,321%
A 608% uplift in clicks
Average cost-per-click decreased by 20%
Conversions were up 440%

With such impressive results, this strategy is now being rolled out across other international markets for Easy Offices, setting them well on their way to becoming the biggest office space broker globally.

Fallout 76 will come to Steam on April 7, alongside human NPC-focused ‘Wastelanders’ expansion – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: Fallout 76 was a controversial game on launch, and it still is to a degree. However, much of the heat from players and the media has died down due to the plethora of bug fixes and content updates it has received over the past year or so. Indeed, the game is set to receive one of its most significant free expansions yet in a couple of months.
Called “Wastelanders,” the update will bring human NPCs to the world of Fallout 76 for the first time ever. So far, players have had to make do with user-to-user and user-to-creature interactions, which made the world feel a bit lifeless and stale. Theoretically, Wastelanders will fix that problem, while also adding in a new faction quest, companions, wild new monster types, and a revamped main storyline.
For players who have stuck with 76 from the start, Wastelanders promises to be a significant breath of fresh air. Always-online games such as this live and die on the quality and quantity of their updates. Developers may not have to deliver a stable or even worthwhile product on launch (much to the chagrin of many), but as long as their games get better over time, they will likely amass a decent following.

Of course, opening up your game to a broader audience helps with its potential success, too. Alongside the Wastelanders update’s April 7 launch, Fallout 76’s Bethesda.net PC exclusivity will come to an end. On that day, the game will arrive on Steam, one of the largest PC-focused digital distribution platforms out there.
Fallout 76’s Steam version will come with the usual perks you’ve come to expect from other games on the platform: the Steam overlay, friends list integration, discussions, user reviews, refunds, achievements, and possibly even Workshop mod support down the line.
If you’ve held off on buying Fallout 76 up to this point due to poor reviews or its exclusivity, April 7 may be a great time to give it a shot. You can’t pre-order the game on Steam yet, but we assume you’ll be able to soon. As long as its pricing doesn’t change much in the next two months, it should run you about $40.

The second Metro Exodus expansion arrives in February – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: Metro Exodus was one of the best games of 2019, and while most people will have played through the game and its Two Colonels DLC more than once, a second and likely final expansion is arriving on February 11.
With its large, open areas, Metro Exodus was a big change from the previous two games, which were mostly set in the underground tunnels of Moscow. Two Colonels brought back the claustrophobic atmosphere of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, while the upcoming Sam’s Story is described as a “sandbox-survival” expansion by developer 4A Games.

In the DLC, players take on the role of Sam, an American marine who was trapped in Russia following the nuclear apocalypse. We get to guide Sam’s path from the Aurora and through Vladivostok’s “tsunami-ravaged harbors, ruined industrial buildings, and crumbling residential districts” as he tries to get back home to the US and, hopefully, find his family alive. Expect to discover some new enemies to fight and weapons to play with.
No word on how much Sam’s Story will cost but expect it to be similar to Two Colonel’s $7.99 price unless it happens to feature a lot more content. The game arrives on February 11, which is just a few days after Metro Exodus’ Epic Store exclusivity deal ends, so it’ll be available on both the Steam and Epic storefronts.
Metro Exodus remains one of our Best PC Games (You Should Be Playing), and Sam’s Story could be a great excuse to return to its world.

How Starling Bank is gearing itself up for 2020 expansion- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Starling Bank is on a mission to it double its customer base to two million in 2020. After focusing on the technology powering its services, it’s now investing heavily into its marketing and adopting a brand-led approach.
But with traditional banks getting more tech-savvy and increased competition from other fintech start-ups encroaching on its user base, it won’t be an easy ride for the company as it endeavours to break-even this year.
Something to shout about
Starling Bank – now the third biggest neobank – was established in 2014 by Anne Boden, offering mobile current accounts for business and personal users.
“We’re not a start-up anymore. We’re like a gangly teenager, in that we’re still learning but we have the energy of youth behind us,” said Rachael Pollard, Starling Bank’s head of growth.
2019 was a pivotal year for the brand. It appointed its first-ever head of growth, reached one million customers and launched its first-ever UK-wide TV campaign. It was also voted the top bank for the second year running at the British Bank Awards.
“We’ve been very British about the way we position ourselves, and how much we shout out about what we do,” admitted Pollard. “We needed to take a more bombastic approach to let the UK know more about us.”
In an attempt to escape the London bubble and become nationally recognised, its first major investment into marketing resulted in a TV campaign to present Starling as a national bank for affluent, older customers. It worked. A midway campaign dip test reported that prompted brand awareness had jumped up to 38% from 22% across the country.

Hitting the ground running in 2020, Pollard said Starling Bank will continue to plough money into big brand marketing. Throughout January, which Pollard says is a “massive month” for the company, there will be a refreshed version of its October campaign.
Beyond that, it has another major through the line campaign in the works, with a planned release in the first quarter. “It will be different to the current creative, but a continuation of the theme,” she divulged.
This year, Pollard said that “travel will be a much bigger strategic campaign.” ‘Travel with no fees’ was a small campaign the team launched last year that targeted all the main airport terminals and train stations.
Two million milestone
All of this is in aid of a big customer target the banks bosses have set. “We’re really gathering pace,” said Pollard. In 2019, the bank had doubled its 500,000 customer base by November. The key KPI for 2020 is to reach two million customers.
Despite the one million milestone, compared to other fintech players, Starling Bank still has a lot of catching up to do. Though while it trails behind Revolut’s eight million customers, and Monzo’s 3.3 million, Starling Bank feels it has the edge over competitors due to the kind of customers it’s attracting.
“If we were going for pure volume, it would be different. But we want two million higher-value customers, who are harder to reach and harder to acquire,” Pollard said.
While Monzo has positioned itself as the card for the young professional, Starling Bank has set its sights on the 25 to 44, more affluent, bracket. A smart move, given Monzo is now having to expand its client beyond the young millennials who are taking advantage of its £500 overdraft limit.
However, to assuage trepidation among consumers who are nervous about pivoting away from big, traditional banks is not an easy task, though Starling hopes its big brand-awareness campaigns will “convince people to download the app and give us a go.”
Starling is also banking on the residual mistrust of banks leftover from the 2007-2008 banking crisis. “The older bracket is still burned by the banking crisis,” Pollard said. “We want to be a genuine alternative bank for those affected by the banking crisis,” Pollard said. Starling claims to be the only fintech that is fully-regulated and signed up to all the other codes of conduct, which she said is “really good for securing people’s money and giving them peace of mind.”
Competition from traditional banking
While fintech companies benefit from being digital-first, it is questionable how much longer their superior tech will set them apart from traditional banking.
With traditional banks ploughing budgets into digital in a bid to catch up with fintech disruption, Starling Bank needs to keep on its toes. NatWest has even launched a banking app called Bó, designed to compete with the start-ups.
“My hope and ambition for Starling is to disrupt an entire industry, for the better,” said Pollard. “In the future, I hope the word ‘fintech’ becomes redundant, and there are only banks.”
Pollard’s hopes for the future lies in the bank abilities to stay ahead in terms of tech capabilities and greater awareness in places outside of London.
She said that, unlike Monzo who had plans to release a metal card that was criticised for being ‘faddish,’ beyond scaling up its user base, through 2020 Starling hopes to run its own race though “new functionalities on the app. We’re constantly testing and trying to make our product better.”

Uber commits $200 million to Uber Freight expansion in bet on trucking and Chicago – gpgmail


Uber Freight is establishing its headquarters in Chicago as part of Uber’s broader plan to invest more than $200 million annually in the region, including hiring hundreds of workers.

Uber said Monday it will hire 2,000 new employees in the region over the next three years, most of which will be dedicated to Uber Freight .

Uber Freight, which helps truck drivers connect with shipping companies, has become an important piece to Uber’s larger business strategy to generate revenue from all forms of transportation, including logistics for packages.

Since launching in May 2017, Uber Freight has grown from from limited regional operations in Texas to the rest of the continental U.S. and then to Europe.

Uber made Uber Freight a separate business unit in August 2018. Since then, the company has redesigned the app, adding new navigation features that make searching for and filtering loads easier to customize and more intuitive, as well as other features, including an updated map view and a search bar across the top of the screen.

It’s also made some key hires, one of which intimated the company’s global ambitions. The company hired Andrew Smith, one of Box’s early employees, to head up global sales at Uber Freight, and Bar Ifrach, formerly of Airbnb, to lead its marketplace team.

With signs of some success, Uber is doubling down on the trucking business.

Uber Freight has more than 400,000 drivers in its carrier network and 1,000-plus shippers as customers, including AB Inbev, Niagara Bottling and Land O’Lakes, according to the company. Uber Freight also has more than 50,000 carriers on the platform.

“I believe this makes Uber Freight  the biggest virtual fleet in the United States,” Lior Ron, head of Uber Freight, told gpgmail in a recent interview.

The company has been relatively quiet as it has scaled up, Ron said, noting that this announcement marks a turning point for Uber Freight.

“This is really a graduation moment for us and where we can share that because the business is doing so well we are doubling down on our investment,” he said.

The new Uber office located in The Old Main Post Office in the historic Chicago River area will serve as Uber Freight headquarters and its first engineering hub outside of San Francisco.

“Trucking represents an enormous opportunity for Uber, and this milestone is a testament to our long-term commitment to our Freight business,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement. “Chicago is the heart of America’s transportation and logistics industry, and there is no better place to open our dedicated Freight HQ. Uber has long recognized the incredible history, innovation, and talent that Chicago has to offer, and we’re excited about the thousands of new jobs our Freight business will help bring as we become one of the city’s largest technology employers.”

As part of its new investments in the region, Uber is collaborating with the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership (CCWP) to help with workplace diversity. Uber will start onboarding new employees in 2020 and will work with CCWP to develop a process for identifying potential candidates through their system.

Flower delivery startup UrbanStems raises $12M to fund national expansion – gpgmail


UrbanStems is announcing that it has raised $12 million in Series B funding.

CEO Seth Goldman told me the startup has already been using the money to expand nationally. He explained that UrbanStems now has two delivery models — there are bike couriers who deliver plants and flowers within two hours in New York City and Washington, D.C. (where the company is headquartered), and then there’s a third-party shipping partner who offers next-day delivery to anywhere else in the United States.

The company started out with bike couriers, and Goldman said it’s not abandoning that strategy: “We will find areas where there’s enough demand to warrant jumping in, boots on the ground.”

At the same time, he said next-day shipping has allowed the company “grow a lot faster in the short term.” (Regardless of method, UrbanStems does not charge an extra delivery fee.)

Recent initiatives include a partnership with Vogue, with bouquets created by Vogue editors. In addition, the company has been expanding beyond flowers (where prices start at $35) and plants ($50) by offering curated gift boxes ($55). It sounds like Goldman has plans to do more in this area, too.

“The gifting market is far bigger than just the flower market,” he said. “We are providing more than a product … Gifting itself is a highly emotional, vulnerable experience. [You want to] make sure it gets there successfully, make sure it gets there on-time, make sure they love it, it’s packaged well, every little detail feels personal and special.”

The round was led by SWaN & Legend Venture Partners (who also led the startup’s $6.8 million Series A) and Motley Fool Ventures, with participation from Middleland Capital, NextGen Venture Partners and Sagamore Ventures.

“We are excited to continue to invest in the growth of UrbanStems,” said SWaN & Legend Managing Director David Strasser in a statement. “We continue to be impressed with the team led by Seth Goldman, as he builds on the strong foundation the cofounders laid out in building the pre-eminent gifting platform of the future.”

The funding came after a leadership change at the company, with Goldman (who joined as COO in 2017 after serving as CEO for HelloFresh USA) taking over the chief executive role from co-founder Ajay Kori in May of last year.

When asked about the transition, Goldman noted that Kori remains involved as chairman of the board, and he said, “We partnered a lot on this and kept our team from making it feel like it was a huge deal — which is a weird thing to say, even though it is a huge deal. But I was already managing more than half of the headcount of entire team across the company … so they knew what they were getting with me as a leader.”

SoftBank-backed Fair taps three executives to lead vehicle subscription app expansion – gpgmail


Fair, the vehicle subscription startup backed by SoftBank, is loading its executive team with veterans in the tech, venture and automotive industries as it seeks to build out its Uber leasing program and expand beyond North America.

Fair.com today announced three key hires to lead the development of its car subscription app, financing department and leasing program with Uber.

Jay Trinidad, a former Google and Discovery Networks executive, is now chief product officer. Trinidad will direct the company’s app development and technology efforts. Former chief accounting officer of TrueCar John Pierantoni has been hired as senior vice president of finance and risk.

Pat Wilkison, general partner of venture firm Exponential Partners — an early investor in Fair — will run the startup’s Uber program.

The three hires are critical additions for the three-year-old startup as it tries to convince consumers to try its car-as-a-service platform over buying or leasing a vehicle from a traditional dealership or other online sales upstarts. The advantage for Fair, aside from the $1.5 billion treasure chest it has amassed — is the platform itself.

The company was founded by automotive, retail and banking executives, including Scott Painter, former founder and CEO of TrueCar, on the premise that today’s consumers, including those in the gig economy, want flexibility.

Fair has tweaked the traditional lease to give consumers more options. Users can subscribe to the program and switch vehicles through the term of their “lease.”

It’s a capital-intensive business model that requires the kind of experience that Painter believes these three executives can deliver.

The hires will help drive Fair’s aggressive efforts around payment, infrastructure and financial planning as it scales its flexible car ownership model internationally and tries to make a name for itself on the global stage.

“A critical part of our transformation effort is deepening our bench of talented executives to set us up for success now and into the future,” Painter said.

The three hires come on the heels of rapid growth, a critical acquisition and huge Series B funding round of $385 million led by SoftBank, with participation from Exponential Ventures, Munich Re Venture’s ERGO Fund, G Squared and CreditEase.

“After closing $385M in our Series B, it’s time to put that capital to work for us to buy cars and propel growth—with this new executive team providing us with important insights and leadership.” Painter said in a statement. “Jay will eliminate execution risk and bring in operational and strategic expertise, Pat is an investor-turned-employee crusader, while John is a world-class financial and accounting expert around whom we can build a sound subscription business and strong auto insurance division.”

Fair acquired in January 2018 the active leasing portfolio of Xchange Leasing, a service Uber first established in 2015 to lease new and nearly new vehicles to drivers who did not come to the service with their own cars.

That acquisition laid the foundation for what has become a big piece of Fair’s business today. Some 45% of Fair’s cars are used by Uber drivers today.

Fair also has aspirations to expand beyond the U.S., Trinidad told gpgmail in a recent interview. The company hasn’t publicly disclosed which countries it might go to first. Europe and Asia, particularly considering Trinidad’s long background in the region, would be the most likely markets for Fair.

In the next year, the company hopes to move into international markets and grow its workforce, which will likely mean moving into a bigger office, Trinidad said.

“I really think in a year’s time, at least in the markets we’re targeting such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, you’ll start to hear ‘Why not Fair a car instead of buying or leasing one?’ It will be a third option people consider.”
