Europe can win global battle for industrial data, says EU industry chief – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Europe may have lost the battle to create digital champions capable of taking on US and Chinese companies harvesting personal data, but it can win the war of industrial data, Europe’s industry policy chief said on Saturday.
Vast troves of data from how fast we drive our cars to how much time a robot needs to churn out products will open a new front in the battle for digital dominance, said Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner in charge of the bloc’s single market.
Alarmed by the dominance of US and Chinese tech companies such as Google, Amazon or Huawei, the European Commission is leaving behind the “laissez-faire” attitude of the early 2000s and ratcheting up regulatory pressure to protect its businesses.
The new approach will be on display on Wednesday when Breton unveils the bloc’s new data and artificial intelligence strategy.
“We’re entering a new phase. The battle for industrial data starts now, and the main battlefield will be Europe,” Breton, a former French finance minister, told Reuters in an interview.
Breton said the EU had a unique opportunity to win the next phase of the digital revolution centered on the harvesting, management and analysis of data from factories, transport, energy and healthcare.
“Europe is the world’s top industrial continent. The United States have lost much of their industrial know-how in the last phase of globalisation. They have to gradually rebuild it. China has added-value handicaps it is correcting,” Breton said.
“But the bulk of the industrial value chain, from large groups to SMEs, is based in Europe today. That’s why all eyes are on Europe right now,” he added.
More assertive
The commissioner, who was speaking from the Munich security conference where he met the chief executive of Microsoft before meeting Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in Brussels on Monday, is keen for Europe to take a more assertive approach.
“In this sector, tomorrow’s winners won’t necessarily be today’s winners,” he said, adding that the big cloud platforms that exist today will probably be replaced by more decentralised and secure “mini-clouds”.
A former CEO of French IT giant Atos and telecoms group Orange, Breton said the European Commission would unveil a three-pronged approach on Wednesday, consisting of tighter regulations, infrastructure investment and sector-specific strategies.
Reuters exclusively reported on January 29 a 25-page draft document outlining the measures to create a single market in data, that could still be tweaked ahead of the February 19 presentation.
It will include an array of new rules covering cross-border data use, data interoperability and standards.
The document also proposes scrapping competition rules which hinder data sharing and possibly introducing rules to prevent large online platforms from unilaterally imposing conditions for access.
Europe will remain open to non-European companies but wants to use the heft of its industrial base to set its own rules before other continents do, Breton said.
“Europe is not naive, it can very well see what’s going on. That’s why we have to organise ourselves now, including when it comes to the deployment of the first 5G networks,” he said.

Rebuffed by UK, US pitches ‘big tent’ for Huawei rivals in Europe – Benchmarking Change- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The United States is seeking to rally European support for competitors to Huawei Technologies following disappointment in Washington over Britain’s decision to use 5G equipment made by the Chinese company.
US officials at a global security conference in Germany this week urged governments and business leaders to build an ecosystem of “industry champions” that can provide alternatives to Huawei, the world’s biggest maker of mobile networking equipment.
Previous US efforts to convince allies to bar the Chinese company from their networks have primarily focused on warnings that its equipment could be used by China for spying.
Huawei has repeatedly and vehemently denied the espionage allegations. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Reuters on Friday there was no credible evidence that Huawei was a threat to US security.
Speaking on Saturday, US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told the Munich Security Conference that Washington was already working with vendors to develop and test new 5G technologies.
“We are encouraging allied and US tech companies to develop alternative 5G solutions and we are working alongside them to test these technologies at our military bases as we speak,” Esper said.
The United States has used high-profile events in recent years to raise security concerns about Huawei equipment, warning that allies that use it in their networks risked being cut off from valuable intelligence-sharing feeds.
Officials in Munich repeated those concerns but also struck a softer tone, emphasising the need to work with Huawei competitors to support their market position. They stopped short, however, of detailing any concrete plans or measures.
White House advisor Robert Blair told reporters the United States was already working with Scandinavian suppliers Nokia and Ericsson, as well as Korea’s Samsung and other smaller firms.
“We will have some sort of a partnership with industry, we’re not sure what that’s going to look like but … we will have a big tent,” said Blair, White House special representative for international telecommunications policy.
“It will be very much a US-led effort but with like-minded partners around the world and we’ll have to see where that discussion goes. And that’s a matter of months not years.”
People with knowledge of the matter said Blair had met with senior executives from both Nokia and Ericsson on the sidelines of the conference but declined to detail the contents of the conversations.
One industry executive said the US arguments about alternate suppliers were not new but had been stepped up following a British decision last month to use Huawei equipment, partly due to a lack of alternatives.
“If people oppose one brand or another then they have to tell us what is the alternative, right?” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said ahead of the UK’s decision.
“The Americans are frustrated by the weak response from Britain, and worry Germany and France will think the same,” said the industry executive, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations with American and European officials.
“As they see it, European leaders are not basing their statements on facts.”

Facebook Dating postponed in Europe over GDPR compliance – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: It appears that Facebook will have to postpone the European launch of its dating service. Facebook Dating was set to go live in the EU on Thursday, the day before Valentines’s Day. However, regulators in Ireland showed it no love by pointing out that it had not filed the proper paperwork in time.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (IDPC) threw a wrench in the social media giant’s plans to import its Facebook Dating service to the European Union. The Wall Street Journal notes, the commission claims that it did not receive a data processing impact assessment (DPIA) until yesterday. A DPIA is required under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
After inspectors from the IDPC visited Facebook’s Dublin-based European headquarters last week, the company decided to put its plans on hold indefinitely. It notified Irish officials on Wednesday of the cancellation of the rollout. In a statement, Facebook said it wanted to be sure it was in compliance with the GDPR.

“We are taking a bit more time to make sure the product is ready for the European market. We have worked carefully to create strong privacy safeguards, and have shared this information with the IDPC ahead of the European rollout.”

The spokesperson also said the company had completed and submitted the DPIA. According to IDPC Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle, this paperwork was requested last week. Facebook turned in the assessment only a day before the intended launch, which is not enough time for review.
“We were very concerned that this was the first that we’d heard from Facebook Ireland about this new feature, considering that it was their intention to roll it out tomorrow, February 13th,” said Doyle.
Facebook initially announced plans for the dating service at its 2018 F8 developer conference. It launched last year in the US. People have also been finding love online in 19 other countries, including Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, and others.

US, Europe could team up on 5G, but not if trade war under way – German lawmaker – Finance – Networking – Security – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The United States and the European Union could team up to counter the dominance of China’s Huawei Technologies in next-generation 5G telecoms technology, but not if Washington continues to threaten tariffs against Brussels, a senior German conservative lawmaker said late on Friday.
Norbert Roettgen, a member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats, said he told US officials during a visit to Washington that he saw opportunities for greater transatlantic cooperation on 5G that would benefit both sides.
“But … it must be clear that cannot happen if there is simultaneously the threat of trade war on the table,” said Roettgen, who heads the foreign affairs committee of Germany’s lower house of parliament, speaking after meetings with State Department and White House officials.
After reaching a Phase 1 trade deal with China, and securing the passage of a new North American trade pact in Congress, US President Donald Trump has set his sights on Europe and what he views as its unfair barriers for US companies.
Trump has threatened to slap 25 percent tariffs on European car imports, a move Brussels says it would counter with tariffs of its own. The two blocs are also at odds over digital services taxes, aircraft subsidies, and Huawei.
The United States says gear provided by Huawei, the leading telecoms equipment vendor with a global market share of 28 percent, contains “back doors” that would enable China to spy on other countries, a claim Huawei vigorously denies.
Roettgen told reporters he did not expect Trump to follow through on the car tariff threat until after the November presidential election, but said the situation was unpredictable.
He said Trump’s rhetoric had become increasingly polarizing, but the historic allies shared security concerns about China and could work together to expand Europe’s alternatives to Huawei’s dominance of the 5G market.
US Attorney General William Barr on Thursday suggested the United States consider taking a “controlling stake” in two major foreign rivals of Huawei, Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson, but the White House dismissed that proposal on Friday.
The EU last week said members should decide for themselves what part Huawei can play in their 5G networks, resisting pressure from Washington for an outright ban.
Merkel favors strict security requirements for Germany’s 5G network, but opposes excluding individual companies.
Roettgen sees growing support for taking a tougher line by requiring firms that roll out a 5G network to be free of political influence in their home country, a move clearly aimed at Huawei.

Qualcomm Faces Tough Competition In Europe Over RFFE Chips For 5G- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Qualcomm has been facing some fresh antitrust scrutiny from the European Commission, as the regulator has raised questions about radio frequency front end (RFFE) chips that can be used in 5G devices.
Qualcomm has been expanding into selling RFFE chips for 5G devices, per Reuters. This would encourage buyers of its 5G modems to also buy its radio frequency front-end chips, rather than buying from other vendors and the integrating their hardware with its 5G modern chips.
As per a European Commission spokesperson, they said that the Commission has sent out questionnaires, as part of a preliminary investigation into the market for radio frequency front end.
Qualcomm has not commented so far.
However, if a violation is found, it warns investors that the EC has the power to impose a fine up to 10 percent of its annual revenues, and also could issue injunctive relief that prohibits or restricts certain business practices.
Last year, Europe’s competition commission fined Qualcomm close to around $270 million, followed by a long-running antitrust investigation. Also two years ago, the Commission had fined the chipmaker a full $1.23 billion in another antitrust case, that was in another antitrust case that was related to its dominance in LTE chipsets in smartphones and specifically related to its relationship with Apple.
Previously, Qualcomm has said that they would continue to vigorously defend them in foregoing matters. But, litigation and investigations are uncertain, and there might be difficulties in evaluating or estimating likely outcomes.

Bose is shutting down all of its 119 retail stores in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Audio company Bose has announced that it’s closing all of its brick-and-mortar retail stores across several global markets over the coming months, due to an increasing number of consumers choosing to shop online instead of physically checking out or buying their products in shops.
Getting hands-on experience with a gadget in-store has its own charm, where the excitement only increases upon observing other neatly arranged products that are yours to try. However, it makes little business sense to keep the shops open and employees on the clock when customers are increasingly shopping online, given the convenience it brings, among other benefits.
Bose, which sells premium audio equipment, has also been affected by this trend and, as a result, will soon be closing all of its retail stores in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia, citing “the dramatic shift to online shopping” in these markets.
“Originally, our retail stores gave people a way to experience, test, and talk to us about multi-component, CD and DVD-based home entertainment systems,” said Colette Burke, Bose’s vice president of global sales. “At the time, it was a radical idea, but we focused on what our customers needed, and where they needed it – and we’re doing the same thing now,” she added.

The Bose Headphones 700 offer class-leading noise cancellation, but also cost a pretty penny
The closure across these regions mean hundreds of layoffs for Bose’s store teams, who Burke says have “set the standard for customer service” over the years. The company isn’t revealing the number of employees affected, but it will be offering them “outplacement assistance and severance.”
In countries including China and the United Arab Emirates, Bose still has around 130 retail stores, which the company says will continue to operate, alongside additional locations in India, Southeast Asia, and South Korea.

Hearst Magazines adopts ‘One Hearst Europe’ structure to drive collaboration- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Hearst Magazines is unifying its European teams to better unlock talent across the group.
The magazine brand boasts 25 titles in the US and 300 international editions, including Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Elle, Bazaar, and Men’s Health but is hoping to derive benefits from bringing European entities closer together.
It has announced strategic changes to better align operations across UK, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, in what it calls the ‘One Hearst Europe’ model. Its top European minds will butt heads to create cohesive strategies in three key commercial pillars: digital acceleration, revenue diversification and growing print share.
Teams are structured by function, rather than nation. While not fully desiloing its national boundaries, it has created four new divisions that span them. Central operations will be led by Claire Blunt, chief financial and operations officer. She moves to the chief financial, operations and data officer (CFODO) role.
The content and consumer (B2C) wing will be led by Giacomo Moletto, chief executive of Western Europe, he moves to chief operating officer (COO).
The people team will be led by Surinder Simmons, chief people officer UK, whose role expands across all of Europe.
The B2B side will be handled in the interim by James Wildman, president of Hearst Europe.
Wildman said: “I am beyond proud to be leading Hearst Magazines Europe into this exciting new decade. I’m also delighted to unveil a new organisational structure that will underpin our future success across the region. By aligning our exceptional talent across our markets, we will become even more innovative and effective.”
Back in August, in the UK, it restructured its sales and marketing teams as a means of simplifying the media buying process across its portfolio. Yet another restructure shows that the organisation is not resting on its laurels as it fortifies its business model against industry-wide declines in print and lower-than expected ad-yields.
The business is on the hunt for new lucrative income streams.
As well as developing products with IMG at a global level, particularly for Cosmopolitan and Esquire, it is looking to get closer to brands and developing new solutions.
In its London HQ, Hearst created a brand showroom space for prospective partners and high-interest brands to meet its editorial and showcase products to influential figures in the media company.

RTL AdConnect inks measurement deal to lure US brands to Europe- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

RTL AdConnect, the sales house for RTL Group, has brought on TVSquared as its exclusive pan-European measurement provider in an effort to entice American brands looking toward international expansion.
RTL Group, which is one of Europe’s largest broadcasters, already has partnerships with smaller measurement firms in individual countries. However, the deal with TVSquared aims to standardize TV measurement and attribution across the whole of Europe to make it easier for US brands to enter the market.
The sales group is specifically targeting direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands, its fastest growing business sector, said AdConnect’s managing director, Stephane Coruble.
“We need to make sure we’re measuring TV like we’re measuring digital,” said Coruble, adding that RTL AdConnect wants to position itself as the “gateway” to Europe for American brands.
Courting DTC brands used to the granular campaign metrics of digital advertising could be a way for RTL Group to stem recent losses in advertising revenue.
Full year ad revenue for 2018 fell by roughly 1%, or €47.9m ($53.2), compared to the prior year. That continued in 2019, with first half ad revenue down 2.1% year-on-year.
DTC companies are advertising more on TV, having increased national TV spend by 35.8% in 2018 and 52.9% in the first half of 2019.
Coruble said the first challenge is to raise the brand awareness of RTL stateside, since the broadcaster doesn’t own any TV stations in the US.
However, RTL Group does own Fremantle, a production company whose properties include American Idol, The Price is Right and Family Feud.
US brands looking to grow in Europe also have to familiarize themselves with the region’s TV ad model, which varies country to country and, overall, is considerably different from that of the US.
“You will have different measurement systems at local levels.” said Coruble, “But at the end of the day, when it comes to attribution, you will have the same KPIs.”
RTL AdConnect says it simplifies pan-European decision making with the offer of a single dashboard.
TVSquared tags a brand’s website and matches it with spot data – such as the cost of a TV ad and the time and location it aired – to measure business outcomes and attribution in near real-time.
Jo Kinsella, chief revenue officer of TVSquared, said providing that level of information could also help European brands enter the US market, too, where the measurement firm and RTL AdConnect have a similar relationship.
“We have European brands … on the platform that have been reluctant to try the US because it’s really big, really expensive and it comes across as being really hard,” said Kinsella. “If you can make that frictionless by simplifying it massively, then we’ll see adoption the other way as well.”
Coruble said the US is the “priority market” for AdConnect, which plans to double its staff of seven between New York and Los Angeles by the end of the year.
RTL Group operates 150 TV channels in 12 different European countries. The measurement deal covers RTL’s total TV footprint, which includes linear broadcast, on demand and its digital properties.
RTL Group plans to grow its total number of paying subscribers to its digital platforms by at least 3 million by 2021, boosting VOD revenue to a projected €360m ($400m).
More broadcasters are onboarding measurement alternatives to the likes of Nielsen to offer advertisers more granular audience data beyond age and gender.
TVSquared has similar deals with Comcast’s Effectv, NBCUniversal and Ampersand. Fox and NBCU have deals with iSpot TV to measure business outcomes, too.
“This is now about changing the conversation and [networks are] saying we’re going to sell you a mix, we’re going to sell you linear and digital, and we’re going to be transparent,” said Kinsella.
“We’re going to give you your own dashboard to… keep us honest and keep us accountable.”

Ford unveils lineup for Europe to outpace gas and diesel vehicle sales by 2022 – gpgmail

Ford unveiled a range of hybrid vehicles Tuesday at the Frankfurt Motor Show as part of its plan to reach sales of 1 million electrified vehicles in Europe by the end of 2022.

Ford introduced hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Mondeo wagon, Puma compact crossover, Kuga (shown below) and Explorer SUVs as well as the new Tourneo “people mover” at the show.

FORD KUGA SIDE CHARGING

But more are coming. Ford said earlier this year it plans to bring eight electrified vehicles to market this year and another nine that will be produced by 2024. One of those, an all-electric Mustang-inspired SUV, will come to market in 2020. The electric SUV with Mustang styling has a targeted range of 600 km (more than 370 miles) calculated using the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), and fast-charging capability.

Ford expects that electrified vehicles will account for more than 50% of its car sales in Europe by 2022, surpassing combined sales of conventional petrol and diesel models.

Ford’s upcoming portfolio is part of its broader plan to make its Europe division leaner and more profitable. The company said in June it will cut 12,000 jobs and consolidate its manufacturing footprint to a proposed 18 facilities by the end of 2020. Most of the job cuts, 2,000 of which are salaried position, will occur through voluntary separation programs.

The automaker also announced Tuesday partnerships with six energy suppliers in Europe, including Centrica in the U.K. and Ireland, to install home charging wall boxes and provide green energy tariffs. A partnership with NewMotion aims to help drivers locate and pay for charging more easily at more than 118,000 charging points in 30 countries.

“With electrification fast becoming the mainstream, we are substantially increasing the number of electrified models and powertrain options for our customers to choose from to suit their needs,” Ford of Europe President Stuart Rowley said in a statement.

Electrified doesn’t mean every vehicle will be solely powered by electricity. The term means the vehicles can use hybrid, plug-in hybrid or battery-electric technology. The showcase Tuesday supports the automaker’s earlier commitment that every new Ford passenger vehicle will include an electrified option.

Ford Europe plans

While some automakers have stuck to an all-electric strategy, Ford plans to produce a range of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles.

“There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution when it comes to electrification – every customer’s circumstances and travel needs are different,” said Joerg Beyer, executive director of engineering at Ford of Europe. “Our strategy is to pair the right electrified powertrain option to the right vehicle, helping our customers make their electrified vehicle experience easy and enjoyable.”

Ford isn’t doing this alone. The automaker announced in July a partnership with Volkswagen Group that covers collaboration on electric vehicles and development of autonomous technology via a $2.6 billion investment by VW into Argo AI.

Under the EV part of the tie-up, Ford will use VW’s MEB platform, the underlying architecture for its upcoming line of passenger electric vehicles, to develop at least one fully electric car for Europe. VW debuted Monday the ID.3, the first model with MEB platform.
