In 2050, every second car on the streets could be electric which would reduce global CO2 emissions by up to 1.5 gigatons per year — equivalent to the total current CO2 emissions of Russia, a new study has predicted.
Under current conditions, driving an electric car is better for the climate than conventional petrol cars in 95 per cent of the world, said researchers.
It is a known fact that electric cars are friendlier to the environment and produce fewer greenhouse gases than petrol vehicles.
“The answer is clear: to reduce carbon emissions, we should choose electric cars and household heat pumps over fossil-fuel alternatives,” said study lead author Florian Knobloch from the Radboud University in the Netherlands.
The study, published in the journal Nature Sustainability, found that average lifetime emissions from electric cars are up to 70 per cent lower than petrol cars in countries like Sweden and France (which get most of their electricity from renewables and nuclear), and around 30 per cent lower in the UK.
In a few years, even inefficient electric cars will be less emission-intensive than most new petrol cars in most countries, as electricity generation is expected to be less carbon-intensive than today.
The research team also looked at electric household heat pumps, and found that these too produce lower emissions than fossil-fuel alternatives in 95 per cent of the world.
Heat pumps could reduce global CO2 emissions in 2050 by up to 0.8 gigatons per year – roughly equal to Germany”s current annual emissions, it added.
The study examined the current and future emissions of different types of vehicles and home heating options worldwide. It divided the world into 59 regions to account for differences in power generation and technology.
In 53 of these regions – including all of Europe, the US and China – the findings show electric cars and heat pumps are already less emission-intensive than fossil-fuel alternatives.
These 53 regions represent 95 per cent of global transport and heating demand and, with energy production decarbonising worldwide, Knobloch said the “last few debatable cases will soon disappear”.
The researchers carried out a life-cycle assessment in which they not only calculated greenhouse gas emissions generated when using cars and heating systems, but also in the production chain and waste processing.
“Taking into account emissions from manufacturing and ongoing energy use, it”s clear that we should encourage the switch to electric cars and household heat pumps without any regrets,” Knobloch noted.

Battery performance can make or break the electric vehicle experience, from driving range to charging time to the lifetime of the car. Now, artificial intelligence has made dreams like recharging an EV in the time it takes to stop at a gas station a more likely reality, and could help improve other aspects of battery technology.
For decades, advances in electric vehicle batteries have been limited by a major bottleneck: evaluation times. At every stage of the battery development process, new technologies must be tested for months or even years to determine how long they will last. But now, a team led by Stanford professors Stefano Ermon and William Chueh has developed a machine learning-based method that slashes these testing times by 98 percent. Although the group tested their method on battery charge speed, they said it can be applied to numerous other parts of the battery development pipeline and even to non-energy technologies.
“In battery testing, you have to try a massive number of things, because the performance you get will vary drastically,” said Ermon, an assistant professor of computer science. “With AI, we’re able to quickly identify the most promising approaches and cut out a lot of unnecessary experiments.”
The study, published by Nature on Feb. 19, was part of a larger collaboration among scientists from Stanford, MIT and the Toyota Research Institute that bridges foundational academic research and real-world industry applications. The goal: finding the best method for charging an EV battery in 10 minutes that maximizes the battery’s overall lifetime. The researchers wrote a program that, based on only a few charging cycles, predicted how batteries would respond to different charging approaches. The software also decided in real time what charging approaches to focus on or ignore. By reducing both the length and number of trials, the researchers cut the testing process from almost two years to 16 days.
“We figured out how to greatly accelerate the testing process for extreme fast charging,” said Peter Attia, who co-led the study while he was a graduate student. “What’s really exciting, though, is the method. We can apply this approach to many other problems that, right now, are holding back battery development for months or years.”
A smarter approach to battery testing
Designing ultra-fast-charging batteries is a major challenge, mainly because it is difficult to make them last. The intensity of the faster charge puts greater strain on the battery, which often causes it to fail early. To prevent this damage to the battery pack, a component that accounts for a large chunk of an electric car’s total cost, battery engineers must test an exhaustive series of charging methods to find the ones that work best.
The new research sought to optimize this process. At the outset, the team saw that fast-charging optimization amounted to many trial-and-error tests – something that is inefficient for humans, but the perfect problem for a machine.
“Machine learning is trial-and-error, but in a smarter way,” said Aditya Grover, a graduate student in computer science who co-led the study. “Computers are far better than us at figuring out when to explore – try new and different approaches – and when to exploit, or zero in, on the most promising ones.”
The team used this power to their advantage in two key ways. First, they used it to reduce the time per cycling experiment. In a previous study, the researchers found that instead of charging and recharging every battery until it failed – the usual way of testing a battery’s lifetime -they could predict how long a battery would last after only its first 100 charging cycles. This is because the machine learning system, after being trained on a few batteries cycled to failure, could find patterns in the early data that presaged how long a battery would last.
Second, machine learning reduced the number of methods they had to test. Instead of testing every possible charging method equally, or relying on intuition, the computer learned from its experiences to quickly find the best protocols to test.
By testing fewer methods for fewer cycles, the study’s authors quickly found an optimal ultra-fast-charging protocol for their battery. In addition to dramatically speeding up the testing process, the computer’s solution was also better – and much more unusual – than what a battery scientist would likely have devised, said Ermon.
“It gave us this surprisingly simple charging protocol – something we didn’t expect,” Ermon said. Instead of charging at the highest current at the beginning of the charge, the algorithm’s solution uses the highest current in the middle of the charge. “That’s the difference between a human and a machine: The machine is not biased by human intuition, which is powerful but sometimes misleading.”
Wider applications
The researchers said their approach could accelerate nearly every piece of the battery development pipeline: from designing the chemistry of a battery to determining its size and shape, to finding better systems for manufacturing and storage. This would have broad implications not only for electric vehicles but for other types of energy storage, a key requirement for making the switch to wind and solar power on a global scale.
“This is a new way of doing battery development,” said Patrick Herring, co-author of the study and a scientist at the Toyota Research Institute. “Having data that you can share among a large number of people in academia and industry, and that is automatically analyzed, enables much faster innovation.”
The study’s machine learning and data collection system will be made available for future battery scientists to freely use, Herring added. By using this system to optimize other parts of the process with machine learning, battery development – and the arrival of newer, better technologies – could accelerate by an order of magnitude or more, he said.
The potential of the study’s method extends even beyond the world of batteries, Ermon said. Other big data testing problems, from drug development to optimizing the performance of X-rays and lasers, could also be revolutionized by the use of machine learning optimization. And ultimately, he said, it could even help to optimize one of the most fundamental processes of all.
“The bigger hope is to help the process of scientific discovery itself,” Ermon said. “We’re asking: Can we design these methods to come up with hypotheses automatically? Can they help us extract knowledge that humans could not? As we get better and better algorithms, we hope the whole scientific discovery process may drastically speed up.”

When the automobile industry rulers like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Mercedes ventured into electric mobility, the sustainability and future of this type of mobility became vivid. The Department of Heavy Industries (DHI) received 86 proposals from across the country to deploy 14,988 electric buses. However, only 5,595 buses were accepted by DHI. Companies such as Olectra Greentech, Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland are a few known manufacturers of EVs. 
Very recently, Tata Motors announced they will be setting up 700 EV charging stations across the country. While the push for EVs is hard, the infrastructure that needs it to sustain needs to be developed too. This is where technology comes in. 
How can technology boost EV infrastructure? 
Faster charging stations
Most EV owners complain of slow charging stations which is a major inconvenience. This is the reason most people are not convinced enough to move to electric vehicles. Along with this, the charge is not enough for long-distance travel. 
Soon one can expect faster-charging stations to solve this problem just the way superchargers worked for electronic devices. Tesla already has a headstart on deploying supercharging stations globally. 
Battery technology
At the moment, rare metal lithium is being used to make batteries for EVs. There hasn’t been much headway in finding a better way to make these batteries since lithium is so hard to find. However, there has been a key finding of lithium reserves in India recently. Around 100 km from Bengaluru, Mandya is a city in south Karnataka where lithium reserves were discovered. This can be a big boost for EVs and also expect better technology for the battery to significantly reduce costs in the future. 
Autonomous driving
Moving to electric mobility already enhances the driving experience and with it one can expect autonomous driving too. Tesla and Toyota are already using autonomous driving for their electric vehicles. This will help make roads safer since the car will be making decisions based on real-time data. 
Urban mobility
If the cost of electric vehicles is a concern, then the best part about technology today is smartphones. There can be so many apps developed around EVs that can cater to all requirements of an individual. Ride too costly? Make an EV ride-sharing app. Battery low? Find the nearest EV charging station on your phone. Applications and AI tools can be used to help the customer with anything and everything. 
Software
As the EV market grows, tech companies will be looking to provide new solutions for new problems. Autonomous cars would be on the lookout for more bandwidth and closer data centers to perform functions. The tech infrastructure will see a major boost to support EVs on road. There will also be improvements in in-car entertainment, sensors, real-time information, etc.

As per experts, the EV conversion will grow by 40%-45% in 2030 alongside the developments in the tech industry. They are both interlinked. When EVs become a regular thing, there will be a need for more charging stations, some that are even in residential buildings. Electric scooters can help cities move beyond cars v pedestrians | Opinion – Blog – 10 minute

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that being hit by a scooter hurts less than being hit by a bike. That may sound like a strangely negative place to start, but it’s sort of fundamental to why I’m glad the government is finally showing signs of legalising the use of electronic scooters on public roads across the UK.
The current state of the law is a mess. Its broad strokes are reasonable enough: powered vehicles require an MOT and registration to use on public roads, while unpowered vehicles do not. Pavements are for foot traffic only. Access requirements complicate matters, but only a little: wheelchairs, both manual and powered – legally, “class three invalid carriages” – can go on pavements, while some – class four – can go on roads as well.

It’s hard to argue that an electric motor is inherently more dangerous than pedal power

Then, in the 1980s, the law was modernised to support the first generation of electric bikes. Fitted with simple motors that aided hill climbs, it felt silly to ban them as electric vehicles, and so a new category – the “electrically assisted pedal cycle” – was invented, and the laws amended further in 2015 to remove weight limits, allow for four wheels and increase the maximum power of the motor.
Which means, as the law stands, you can ride a four-wheeled vehicle of potentially unlimited weight, largely powered by a motor up to 15.5mph, on public roads without training, licensing or registration. But not an electronic scooter. Nor, for that matter, a 5kg, 10mph “hoverboard”, unlikely to hurt anyone save its rider.
Looking at the laws from the ground up, the distinguishing characteristic should be safety, not how a vehicle is powered. It’s hard to argue that an electric motor is inherently more dangerous than pedal power. In fact, given the variability of human strength, it’s almost possible to argue the opposite: electric motors in e-bikes are capped at 250W of power, after all, but no such limit is possible for people, where a fit cyclist can easily exceed 300W or more.
And so a set of regulations which allowed, alongside bikes, skateboards and scooters, electric vehicles of limited weight, power and speed is surely the only justifiable outcome of any consultation.
But more than justifiable, such a set of rules would be good. One of the truisms of the cycling world is that the safest thing for cyclists on the road is more cyclists on the road. It’s not all about public policy and accessible cycle lanes: sheer weight of numbers is important too, in forcing other road users to treat cyclists as a viable third transportation mode, rather than just annoying slowpokes ripe for close passes and aggressive overtakes.
Expanding that constituency, to encompass a wide variety of mid-speed vehicles, would only help push cities towards the tipping point where they can consider transport beyond a simple car/pedestrian binary. And that’s a point every city needs to reach, sooner rather than later, in the face of a climate crisis that much see car usage drastically curtailed.

But. While laws need to be rewritten to support electric scooters, they don’t necessarily need to support the peculiarly American model of dumping a load of scooters on a pavement and hoping enough people will ride them before they get stolen or damaged for the unit economics to work out favourably. That model, unfortunately, has defaulted to its present state: unregulated, unmanaged and cutthroat, with councils left fighting back with nothing but their powers to prevent littering.
Here, the trade-off is more painful. Dockless rideshare – of bikes, e-bikes or e-scooters – can be great for promoting access, but it can also harm those least able to cope, as anyone who has tried to navigate a wheelchair or pram around a pile of Uber bikes knows. Micromobility can succeed with or without the Silicon Valley business models – but it can’t succeed without being given a chance on the roads.

UPS inks electric van deal with Arrival to test Waymo automation – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

United Parcel Service said on Wednesday it was ordering 10,000 electric delivery trucks from UK-based Arrival Ltd and teaming with self-driving startup Waymo as the package carrier works to cut costs and tailpipe pollution.
The UPS/Arrival partnership includes a minority investment from the world’s biggest package delivery firm and lands four months after customer-turned-rival Amazon ordered 100,000 electric vans from Rivian, a Michigan startup partially funded by the world’s largest online retailer.
UPS said a six-month test run with Waymo, the self-driving unit of Google parent Alphabet, would start next month.
UPS will pay Waymo to use autonomous Chrysler Pacifica minivans to shuttle packages from Phoenix UPS stores to a nearby sorting centre several times a day, starting with one route.
The Arrival and Waymo projects “will help us continue to push the envelope on technology and new delivery models that can complement the way our drivers work,” said Juan Perez, chief information and engineering officer at UPS.
Financial terms were not disclosed for either deal.
Amazon’s growing delivery network is putting pressure on UPS and rival FedEx Corp, which are racing to squeeze more profits from surging e-commerce deliveries that are upending their business models.
Electric vehicles have no tailpipe pollution – which is critical as more cities worldwide crack down on emissions from idling delivery vehicles. Broad corporate adoption of electric vehicles could cut sticker prices and make them cheaper to operate and maintain than fossil fuel-burning vehicles. Eventually, removing human drivers might cut costs further.
Perez said the Waymo test would not replace the driver on the affected route. That driver will still make the scheduled daily UPS Store stop.
For Waymo, UPS counts as the latest in a series of moves to expand use of its robotic “Waymo Driver” system beyond robo-taxis.
Waymo recently expanded testing of its autonomous trucks and vans to Texas and New Mexico. Waymo also has extended a deal with vehicle retail chain AutoNation to deliver parts to Phoenix-area stores. AutoNation in turn services Waymo vehicles.
Atlanta-based UPS plans to take ownership of all 10,000 Arrival zero-emission electric vehicles by 2025. The first trucks should hit streets in Paris, London and undisclosed US cities in the second half of this year.
Executives from Arrival and UPS said the trucks had a modular “skateboard platform” that allows users to customise vehicles with swappable parts that reduce production and maintenance costs.

Karma Automotive will reveal its electric pickup truck later this year – Blog – 10 minute

Forward-looking: Electric automaker Karma Automotive is planning to reveal its first electric pickup truck later this year, setting the stage for a near future that could potentially be filled with electric pickups from a variety of manufacturers.
COO Kevin Pavlov told Bloomberg in a recent interview that Karma will base the truck on a new all-wheel-drive system that’ll be manufactured at its Southern California production facility. It’ll be more affordable than the company’s luxury sedan, the Revero, which commands a minimum of $135,000 although specifics beyond that weren’t mentioned.
The AWD platform will also serve as the foundation for a high-end sport utility vehicle, we’re told.
Karma Automotive launched in late 2015 after Chinese auto parts manufacturer Wanxiang Group purchased the remnants of Fisker Automotive out of bankruptcy in February 2014. The company teased an image of its truck last November, just days before Tesla took the wraps off its futuristic Cybertruck.

From what we can discern from the cloaked image, the concept isn’t quite as “forward-thinking” as the Cybertruck but is still unique enough to differentiate it from the crop of gas-powered pickups on the road today.
Tesla isn’t the only other big name that Karma will have to compete with in the electric pickup segment. General Motors and Rivian are also prepping electrified trucks while Ford has its Mustang Mach-E SUV waiting in the wings.

GM is investing $3 billion to build electric vehicles in Detroit – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? General Motors on Monday moved one step closer to making its vision of an all-electric future a reality with the announcement of a substantial investment at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.
The automaker is setting aside $2.2 billion to convert the facility into its first dedicated entirely to building electric vehicles. At present, the Detroit-Hamtramck plant employs around 900 people who build the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6. It’ll go idle at the end of February as the renovations get under way.
Once fully operational, the investment will create more than 2,200 US manufacturing jobs.

The company’s first all-electric pickup truck is slated to enter production in late 2021. It’ll be followed by the Cruise Origin, the electric shuttle bus we profiled on TechSpot last week.
An additional $800 million will be used for supplier tooling and other projects related to the electric trucks, GM said.
GM isn’t the only automaker working on electrified pickups. Tesla unveiled its ambitiously designed Cybertruck late last year and Rivian is working on the R1T, a more conventional pickup that’ll be able to turn on a dime thanks to a feature quite literally called tank turn.
GM was even linked to rumors that it, along with Amazon, was interested in investing in Rivian roughly a year ago although it is unclear if a potential investment from either company ever panned out.

The big picture: When you step back and think about it, traditional cars really aren’t all that ridesharing friendly. They’re difficult to get in and out of, aren’t meant to accommodate a lot of passengers and have lots of useless instruments taking up space. Really, they are best suited for individuals or small groups taking long trips.
Cruise this week showed off its vision for the future – an electric shuttle bus constructed by majority shareholder General Motors that’s purpose built for ridesharing.
Cruise has reimagined the automobile as if it never existed in the first place. The Origin strips out unnecessary equipment like the steering wheel, pedals, rearview mirrors, windshield wipers, fuel tanks and cramped seats. In their place, you’ll find spacious seats that face each other and sliding subway cart-style doors with wide entryways.

These autonomous shuttles will operate 24/7 and run for at least one million miles – far more than you can get out of the average car. Redundancy is built in so there’s no need for a backup human driver. On average, the company said a family in San Francisco that drives or use ridesharing could save up to $5,000 per year with Origin.
How – or when – we can expect to realize those savings remains a mystery as Cruise hasn’t yet shared details on when and where production will take place. We also don’t know much about the vehicle’s powertrain, battery system or cost – both how much it’ll cost Cruise to operate and how much they’ll charge riders for the opportunity.

Subaru sets mid-2030s target to sell only electric vehicles – Strategy- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Japan’s Subaru Corp set a target on Monday to sell only electric vehicles worldwide by the first half of the 2030s, in a move towards its long-term goal of a carbon-free society.
The news comes as Subaru has strengthened capital ties with Toyota Motor Corp, in a trend of global automakers joining forces to slash development and manufacturing costs of new technology.
To supplement the mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars already in its lineup, Subaru plans to develop a so-called “strong hybrid” vehicle using Toyota technology and intended to debut later in the decade.
It is also developing an all-battery electric car with Toyota for release around the same time.
“Although we’re using Toyota technology, we want to make hybrids that are distinctly Subaru,” chief technology officer Tetsuo Onuki told a briefing.
“It’s not only about reducing CO2 emissions. We need to further improve vehicle safety and the performance of our all-wheel drive.”
Subaru said that by 2030 at least 40 percemt of its cars sold worldwide will comprise battery electric vehicles or hybrids.
The Japanese automaker, which produces the Outback and Forester SUVs, is known for its horizontally placed boxer engines, along with its EyeSight autonomous driver assist and all-wheel-drive technologies.
Car manufacturers worldwide are scrambling to chase scale, manage costs and boost development of the self-driving cars, electric vehicles and new mobility services that are upending the industry.
“Subaru’s strong commitment and dedication towards car-manufacturing that we have cultivated throughout our history remain unchanged,” president Tomomi Nakamura added.
