AMD’s Lisa Su doubles down on ‘Big Navi’ and Zen 3 for 2020 – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: On The Bring Up series hosted on AMD’s YouTube channel, Dr. Lisa Su confirmed once again that we’ll see more potent Radeon graphics cards this year. Su also reaffirmed the arrival of Zen 3 in 2020, going so far as to say Zen 3 is doing “really well.”
“I’ve heard a little bit through Twitter and Reddit that people are wondering about, you know, Big Navi. I can say you’re gonna see Big Navi in 2020. There might be few people wondering about Zen 3 as well, and I can tell you that Zen 3 is doing really well, we are excited about it, and I look forward talking about that later in 2020,” said Su.
Beloved CEO, Lisa Su has got its own action figure turns out

Outside of the acknowledgment that Big Navi will debut this year, Su remained tight lipped about details. Judging from AMD’s past hardware launches, we can reasonably expect to know more at E3, presumably with an event similar to last year’s New Horizon Gaming Event. That’s where AMD debuted its Navi 10 silicon and the RX 5000-series.

As to what form Big Navi will take, we’re still forced to speculate. We can expect — or hope, rather — that AMD will finally address the upper end of Nvidia’s RTX product stack, from the RTX 2070 Super on up. Recently, we were treated to a leaked benchmark of what could be an unannounced AMD GPU. While it’s important to take that benchmark with all due skepticism, the prospect of a proper competitor to Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti is tantalizing indeed.
AMD typically reserves CPU and motherboard announcements for Computex, and it’s likely that’s where we’ll hear more regarding AMD’s next generation of desktop processors.

This robovac doubles as a mobile surveillance system for your home – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: The obvious shortcoming? Well, you’re inviting a roving camera into your home meaning privacy is going to be a concern for some potential buyers. There’s also the $799 price tag although really, that’s in line with some of its competitors already on the market.
Autonomous robotic vacuums have been making life a bit easier for their owners for over two decades now. While later examples are significantly more capable than earlier models, even the most advanced robovacs still have some pretty significant shortcomings that limit their usefulness.
Anyone with pets, for example, is well aware of how unpredictable they can be. A simple accident due to an upset stomach can turn into an absolute nightmare if your robot vac isn’t able to detect the mess and take evasive maneuvers. Yes, it’s a very real possibility and one that happens more often than you might think.

A company by the name of Trifo believes it has developed a solution to avoid such calamities and more through the use of edge AI and cameras.
Trifo’s new Lucy robotic vacuum is equipped with a 1080p HDR color camera and an active depth sensor. Together, these sensors can identify objects down to an inch tall so things like slippers, socks and pet accidents won’t get run over and hinder the robot’s job (or worse, transfer the mess all around your home).
The cameras – powered by a six-core ARM processor – also double as a mobile surveillance system, scouting your home day and night for any suspicious behavior. Lucy has a 5,200mAh battery that’s good for up to 120 minutes of runtime and is rated at 3,000 Pa of suction.
Look for Lucy to do your bidding from the first quarter of this year.

Paytm’s annual loss doubles to $549M – gpgmail

Running a payments business in India is not cheap. Just ask Paytm . One of India’s largest payment companies reported a net loss of Rs 3959 crore ($549 million) for the financial year that ended in March, up 165% over 1490 crore ($206 million) in the same period last year.

During the same period, the company’s revenue rose to Rs 3232 crore ($448 million), compared to Rs 3052 crore ($423 million) in the year before. The firm’s debt also surged to Rs 695 crore ($96 million), One97 Communications, the parent firm of Paytm, told investors in its annual report.

One97 Communications also runs an e-commerce business, which recently raised money from eBay, and Paytm Money, that runs mutual funds business. On a consolidated basis, the 9-year-old firm reported an annual loss of Rs 4217.20 crore ($584 million), up from Rs 1604.34 crore ($222 million) from the year before.

Indian news outlet BloombergQuint first reported (paywalled) the financial performance of Paytm.

The loss should worry Paytm, whose CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said in a conference last week that the firm would begin to work on going public in the next 22 to 24 months. The level of competition that Paytm faces today is only about to increase in the coming future, and unlike earlier, the Indian firm is not facing off financially weaker local rivals.

Paytm, which has raised over $2 billion to date from a range of investors including SoftBank, Alibaba, and Berkshire Hathaway, continues to be the largest mobile wallet app provider in India, but increasingly users are moving to government-backed UPI payments infrastructure. In UPI land, Paytm competes with Flipkart’s PhonePe and Google Pay, both of which are heavily-backed.

As of July, both PhonePe and Google Pay commanded a bigger market share across UPI apps than Paytm.

Also in UPI land, you don’t make money on each transaction. So lately, every payments firm in India, including Paytm, has expanded it offering to include financial services such as a credit card, or loan, or insurance.

In many ways, this has created a level playing field for payment firms that did not dominate the wallet business.

In a statement, Paytm said it has been investing $1 billion per year for the last two years to “expand payments ecosystem in our country.” The company plans to invest a further $3 billion in the next two years.

“We believe India is at the inflection point of digital payments and Paytm’s sole focus is towards solving the merchant payments and offering them financial services. We will invest Rs 20,000 crore ($2.7 billion) in the next two years towards achieving this,” a company spokesperson said.

The biggest challenge for Paytm and other UPI payment apps has yet to emerge. Before the end of this year, WhatsApp, which has over 400 million users in India, plans to offer UPI payment option to all its years in the coming month.

Intel Core i9-9900KS Ships in Oct., Cascade Lake-X Nearly Doubles Performance Per Dollar

Intel made some product announcements at a pre-IFA event in Berlin this week, including news on the Core i9-9900KS that it announced earlier this summer and an upcoming product refresh for its Core X family. Intel has been pushed onto its proverbial heels by AMD’s 7nm onslaught, and it has yet to respond to those products in a significant way. These new parts should help do that, albeit at the high end of the market.

First, there’s the Core i9-9900KS. This CPU is a specially-binned Core i9-9900K, with the ability to hit 5GHz on all eight CPU cores, and a 4GHz base clock. That’s a 1.1x improvement over base clock on the 9900K, but the impact of the all-core 5GHz boost is harder to estimate. A sustained all-core 5GHz clock speed would be substantially higher than the Core i9-9900K we have here at ET — but Intel CPUsSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce no longer hold their full clocks under sustained load. Our Core i9-9900K will turbo up to high clocks for 20-30 seconds, depending on the workload, before falling back to speeds in the lower 4GHz range when run on our Asus Z390 motherboard.

A faster Core i9 will undoubtedly improve Intel’s positioning against the Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 family,SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce but even a chip that could hold an all-core 5GHz boost won’t catch the 12-core/24-thread Ryzen 9 3900X in most multi-threaded applications that can scale up to 12 cores. The gap between the two parts is too large to be closed in such a manner.

What the 9900KS will do for Intel, however, is give it a little more room to maneuver in gaming performance, which is where the company is making its stand. On the desktop side of things, Intel is facing a genuinely tough competitive situation, and even the advent of 10-core desktop CPUs may not solve the problem.

Cascade Lake May Meaningfully Respond to Threadripper

For the past two years, AMD has hammered Intel with high-performing, (relatively) low-cost workstation processors. Even though Intel’s Skylake X CPUs have often punched above their weight class compared with the Core family, AMD’s willingness to shove tons of cores into its chips has secured it the lead as far as performance/dollar, as well as the absolute performance lead in many well-threaded applications.

Intel may intend to challenge this in a far more serious way this year. The company showed the following slide at IFA:

The implication of this slide is that Intel will launch new Cascade X CPUs at substantially lower per-core prices than it has previously offered. We say “implication,” however, because technically this is a slide of performance per dollar, not price. Imagine two hypothetical CPUs, one with a price of $1,000 and performance of 1x, while the other chip costs $1,500 and has 2x the performance of the first chip. The second chip is 1.5x more expensive than the first but offers 1.33x more performance/dollar.

With AMD potentially eyeing Threadripper CPUs with up to 64 cores, however, Intel may not feel it has a choice. We haven’t heard from AMD on this point yet, so much is up in the air. There seems to be a battle brewing in these segments — hopefully, Intel will bring a much more price-competitive series of parts to market.

Ikea doubles down on smart home tech with new business unit – gpgmail

Ikea’s smart home investments to date have been smart but scattered – now the Swedish home goods brand says it’s going to amp up its smart home bets with a brand new dedicated business unit.

The company’s smart home endeavors began in 2012, and focused on wireless charging and smart lighting. It’s iterated in both areas since, developing self-installed integrated wireless chargers for its furniture, as well as light/charger combos, and finally with a new partnership with Sonos that produced the Symfonisk line of wireless smart speakers.

Ikea also has its own ambitions in terms of being the hub for future smart home products, not only from a hardware perspective, but also via its Home smart app, which it rebranded from being more strictly focused on its Tradfri line of connected bulbs in June. During the Symfonisk launch, Ikea told me it has broader ambitions for the Home smart app as a central hub for connected home control for its customers.

“At IKEA we want to continue to offer products for a better life at home for the many people going forward. In order to do so we need to explore products and solutions beyond conventional home furnishing,” said Björn Block, Head of the new IKEA Home smart Business Unit at IKEA of Sweden, in a press release from the company.

Ikea also characterized this as its biggest new focus area in terms of the overall business and brand since it introduced its Children’s Ikea line.

The partnership between Sonos and Ikea that produced the Symfonisk line is a long-term one, and both companies told me to expect more products to come out of that team-up in future. But it sounds like Ikea intends to explore how smart home tech might touch all aspects of its business, so it’s fair to anticipate more partnerships and product categories to follow as a result of this new investment focus, too.
