DigitalOcean Data Leak Incident Exposed Some of Its Customers Data – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

DigitalOcean, one of the biggest modern web hosting platforms, recently hit with a concerning data leak incident that exposed some of its customers’ data to unknown and unauthorized third parties.
Though the hosting company has not yet publicly released a statement, it did has started warning affected customers of the scope of the breach via an email.
According to the breach notification email that affected customers [1, 2] received, the data leak happened due to negligence where DigitalOcean ‘unintentionally’ left an internal document accessible to the Internet without requiring any password.

“This document contained your email address and/or account name (the name you gave your account at sign-up) as well as some data about your account that may have included Droplet count, bandwidth usage, some support or sales communications notes, and the amount you paid during 2018,” the company said in the warning email as shown below.

Upon discovery, a quick digital investigation revealed that the exposed file containing customers’ data was accessed by unauthorized third parties at least 15 times before the document was finally taken down.
“Our community is built on trust, so we are taking steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We will be educating our employees on protecting customer data, establishing new procedures to alert us of potential exposures in a more timely manner, and making configuration changes to prevent future data exposure,” the company added.

To be noted, this specific breach neither indicates the DigitalOcean website was compromised, nor the customers’ login credentials were leaked to the attackers.
So, if you have an account with the hosting service, you don’t have to rush into changing your password. However, the service also offers two-factor authentication that every user must enable to add an extra layer of security to their accounts.
The Hacker New has reached out to DigitalOcean for a comment, and the story will be updated with the response.

COVID-19: E-com, VoD, gaming and edtech seeing significant growth in customer base, Prabhakar JayKumar, DigitalOcean- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

There is growing demand for cloud infrastructure in Indian businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What kind of enquiries are you getting from the current customers ?Cloud is the backbone for most of the new-age tech businesses.  Given the increase in people working from home and the lockdown situation across the country, businesses in the domains of e-commerce, video streaming, gaming and ed-tech to name a few are seeing significant growth in their customer base and as an extension, there is increased usage of cloud infrastructure to keep up with the growing demand they are seeing in their businesses.
Many of your customers are start-ups. They are bearing the brunt of COVID-19. What concessions are you offering them and what’s the strategy to offer support to start-ups.One of the core values at DigitalOcean is “Our community is bigger than just us”.  Our mission to serve the global community is now even more urgent as we feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are committed to supporting developers and entrepreneurs all over the world.
We know how powerful technology can be in making real change and driving positive outcomes in the face of challenges and for this reason, we launched our Hub for Good program.
As part of the DigitalOcean Hub for Good, we have committed to the following:

$100,000 in infrastructure credits. These grants support our core community of developers and innovators who are using technology to make a positive impact on the world. We are providing up to $1,000 in credits to each new, not-for-profit project related to COVID-19 that needs cloud services.
$50,000 cash donation to our COVID-19 Relief Fund. We understand that the most immediate needs are often economic in nature, and we are honored to support medical professionals on the frontlines, researchers leading scientific developments and initiatives, and those who are facing particular turmoil during this time.
Raise awareness of COVID-19-related projects, and provide learning resources to developers. We share these projects on our portal to attract more volunteers and collaborators across the globe, while continuing to support developers as they learn and iterate on their ideas.

Please discuss the experience of providing work from home at a massive scale (Bandwidth management, API handling, etc)Most of the applications such as video and audio streaming and real-time communication  whose usage has spiked in the Covid-19 environment are bandwidth-intensive. Bandwidth costs on most cloud platforms can be substantial and constitute a significant portion of a customer’s cloud computing costs.
DigitalOcean has proven especially popular with companies developing network-intensive apps because we charge only ~10-20% of what other clouds do for bandwidth. The savings can easily add up to hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars for apps that require large scale.
Your views on the security concern when working from home? The view that working from home could lead to security concerns is a myth. The following are some basics that need to be followed to ensure security:

Enabling access to critical applications and data through a VPN
Having security software installed on individual machines and keeping the software up-to-date

How do you see the future of cloud in a post-COVID-19 scenario? How will the view change and why ?Given that most startups and businesses these days are “born in the cloud”, the number of businesses that will continue to leverage the cloud to manage and grow their businesses will only continue to increase.

DigitalOcean launches managed MySQL and Redis database services – gpgmail

Half a year after launching its managed PostgreSQL service, upstart hosting and cloud services platform DigitalOcean today announced the launch of its managed MySQL and Redis database offerings, too.

Like most of the company’s latest releases, this move exemplifies DigitalOcean’s ambition to move beyond its discount hosting roots and to become a more fully-fledged cloud provider. Besides the database service and its core hosting products and infrastructure, the company now offers object and block storage and a Kubernetes engine, which itself can be used to run virtually any modern piece of cloud infrastructure. It’s unlikely to catch up with the hyperclouds anytime soon, but it’s good to have a competitor in the market.

“With the additions of MySQL and Redis, DigitalOcean now supports three of the most requested database offerings, making it easier for developers to build and run applications, rather than spending time on complex management,” said Shiven Ramji, DigitalOcean’s Senior VP of Product. “The developer is not just the DNA of DigitalOcean, but the reason for much of the company’s success. We must continue to build on this success and support developers with the services they need most on their journey towards simple app development.”

Pricing for the managed database services remains the same, no matter which engine you choose.

The new database services are now available in the company’s New York, Frankfurt and San Francisco data centers. Support for other database engines is also in the works. As the company notes, it selected MySQL and Redis because of popular demand from its developer community and it will do so for other engines as well. MySQL and Redis were the only services on DigitalOcean’s roadmap for 2019, though, so I don’t expect we’ll see any additional releases before the end of the year.

DigitalOcean gets a new CEO and CFO – gpgmail

DigitalOcean, the cloud infrastructure service that made a name for itself by focusing on low-cost hosting options in its early days, today announced that it has appointed former SendGrid COO and CFO Yancey Spruill as its new CEO and former EnerNOC CFO Bill Sorenson as its new CFO. Spruill will replace Mark Templeton, who only joined the company a little more than a year ago and who had announced his decision to step down for personal reasons in May of this year.

“DigitalOcean is a brand I’ve followed and admired for a while — the leadership team has done a tremendous job building out the products, services and, most importantly, a community, that puts developer needs first,” said Spruill in today’s announcement. “We have a multi-billion dollar revenue opportunity in front of us and I’m looking forward to working closely with our strong leadership team to build upon the current strategy to drive DigitalOcean to the company’s full potential.”

Spruill das have a lot of experience, given that he was in CxO positions at SendGrid through both its IPO in 2017 and its sales to Twilio in 2019. He also previously held the CFO role at DigitalGlobe, which he also guided to an IPO.

In his announcement, Spruill notes that he expects DigitalOcean to focus on its core business, which currently has about 500,000 users (though it’s unclear how many of those are active, paying users). “My aspiration is for us to continue to provide everything you love about DO now, but to also enhance our offerings in a way that is meaningful, strategic and most helpful for you over time,” he writes.

Spruill’s history as CFO includes its fair share of IPOs and sales, but so does Sorenson’s. As CFO at EnerNOC, he guided that company to a sale to investor Enel Group. Before that, he led business intelligence firm Qlikto an IPO.

It’s not unusual for incoming CEOs and CFO’s to have this kind of experience, but it does make you wonder what DigitalOcean’s future holds in store. The company isn’t as hyped as it once was and while it still offers one of the best user experiences for developers, it remains a relatively small player in the overall cloud game. That’s a growing market, but the large companies — the ones that bring in the majority of revenue — are looking to Amazon, Microsoft and Google for their cloud infrastructure. Even a small piece of the overall cloud pie can be quite lucrative, but I think DigitalOcean’s ambitions go beyond that.
