‘Avataar.me’ Deploys AR To Provide A Contactless Experience- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
How do you think the AR sector will upsurge in the near future?
Pre-COVID the estimates for the Marketing and Commerce AR were around USD 2 Bn in 2020 and are estimated to reach USD 20 Bn by 2023. We expect the trend to accelerate further post covid as there has never been a greater need to bridge the online and offline experience gap. With ‘contactless’ to be a new normal, consumers will demand contactless experiences and all commerce is expected to be ever more digitally influenced.
What different approach has Avataar.me taken to enhance the AR/VR industry?
Our deep tech capabilities are unparalleled in the AR/VR industry. Our patents and IP differentiate us on photo-realism, scalability of AI, topology preserved compression, run time rendering on the lowest spec smartphones, and delivering highly interactive experiences. This helps us drive very high emotional engagement and impulse with consumers, delivering full-funnel outcomes for our brand and commerce partners.
Avataar’s platform works in a plug & play fashion for our partners – our deep-learning AI directly converts 2D photos and videos to life-size 3D from existing 2D inventory of images and videos, helping brands immerse their consumers in life-size AR visual discovery – from trying apparels, makeup and accessories on yourself, to trying furniture in your living room, or a life-size car in your backyard – we can do it all! Our AR platform embeds into our brand’s social pages as well websites/apps to offer plug-and-play experiences at scale.
Moreover, our unique capabilities have enabled us to enter partnerships with global brands and social platforms like FB and Instagram.
What are the new technologies that expect you to accelerate in your field?
Avataar is working towards deeper penetration of AR/VR into the action plan of partner businesses to grow exponentially. Social AR is already working well and we are working hard to unleash our first to market WebAR capabilities to help Auto, Home Improvement, Apparel, FMCG and Electronics customers drive tangible at-home discovery and delight.
While Lifesize 3D is here and now and substrate independent reaching over 3.0 Bn users, true AR penetration is 15 – 20% currently but expected to ramp up significantly with better smartphone camera hardware and experience a step jump once AR glasses become commercial and mainstream in 2023 and beyond. (Apple has already announced untethered AR glasses by 2023).
How technology and AR can help in an increasing need for contactless experience?
Today of the nearly 3Bn + smartphone, nearly 55% are AR-enabled and this number will grow to 80% over the next 2 years. Over the last decade, the advent of technology has been driven by mobility and convenience, unlocking multi-billion in businesses and industries that could enhance consumer lifestyle. Apart from mobility and convenience, AR brings in a third vector of safety/hygiene where tangible high-quality product discovery can happen from the safe confines of your home. AR’s unique capability to bridge the online-offline experience makes it the only scalable technology that can drive true omnichannel discovery and purchases, in a post Covid world.
The technology will eventually be all-encompassing and AR/VR use cases will extend to healthcare and education, enterprise productivity and telepresence, industrial applications like Auto and Heavy engineering … beyond just digital and digitally influenced commerce.
What are your immediate and long term objectives?
Our immediate objective is to rapidly accelerate our business partnership capabilities to the big AR/VR markets globally (India/US/UK/Japan/SEA) – to partner with the top 50 digital clients in key geographies, within Auto, Home Improvement, Apparel, FMCG and Electronics categories. The long term objective is to be a globally dominant AR/VR powerhouse shaping the future of the industry.

SA Health deploys Microsoft Teams to 40k staff in a single week – Strategy – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

South Australia’s Health department (SA Health) armed its more than 40,000 staff with Microsoft Teams in a single week to ensure communication, particularly between clinical teams, could continue during the coronavirus crisis.
The unified communication platform was rapidly deployed to staff when the agency first declared a health emergency in response to COVID-19 in mid-March.
Like most other workplaces, SA Health employees had been encouraged to work from home where possible to limit the spread of the virus, making day-to-day contact between teams difficult.
But the platform was also particularly important for clinical staff who had to abide by social distancing measures while continuing to work in hospitals and health services.
Chief digital health officer Bret Morris, who was appointed last year to oversee the state’s new electronic medical record project, said Teams had allowed staff to continue communicating during the crisis.
“At a time when many of our staff were required to work from home, the ease of use of Teams meant we needed to provide minimal training,” he said.
“Clinicians and staff recognised [this and] quickly adopted the technology, resulting in exponential growth in uptake; to 13,000 users in just two weeks.”
He said SA Health worked in partnership with the Office for ICT and Digital Government within the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and Microsoft to complete the rollout.
The state government’s Office 365 central tenancy was leveraged for the rollout.
Staff are able to use Teams on their own devices, as well as on desktops and laptops as part of the standard operating environment for SA Health.
More than 400,000 messages and over 25,000 calls have taken place using the platform since it was introduced, with these numbers growing daily.
SA Health intends to continue using Teams as its central communications and collaboration platform in the future.
It is planning to explore how Teams could be further used in clinical scenarios and integrated with the Sunrise EMR.
Microsoft Australia national technology officer Lee Hickin said the “impact” of SA Health’s “rapid deployment of Teams is impressive”.
“Clinical teams have been able to communicate quickly and clearly from any device and any time, optimising patient outcomes without compromising their own safety and security,” he said.

Going by the same lines,  Cube Wealth, a fintech startup has introduced fun and rewarding games on its mobile applications to make transactions easier. Satyen Kothari, Founder & CEO, Cube Wealth shares his entrepreneurial journey.
How do you think the recent times have aggravated the need for tech-based products?
I think these trying times have shown investors the value of high-quality advice. It has also highlighted the inherent advantage of technology-based products like Cube Wealth. I can, however, look at data. If you look at the SENSEX we have already climbed up from around 25,000 pts back in March to 31,600 in the first week of May. And if you believe in the overall India story for the long term (10-20 years), buying stocks of high-quality companies as evaluated by the experts is still the way to go.
How has Cube Wealth simplified wealth creation for the professionals? Could you delve a little deeper?
Cube Wealth has simplified wealth creation for busy professionals. It gives regular investors access to top-notch advisors and Wealth Coaches. Earlier only the ultra-rich had access to such high-quality advisory. It is the combination of a simple no-drama app interface and the human touch we provide that sets Cube apart.
The app lets you do things you don’t want to do without anyone else’s intervention. So you can set up SIPs, track your portfolio & browse recommended funds on your own. Then there are things that you need help with – so our expert advisors can guide you with financial analysis, tell you what to buy, and even more importantly when to sell your mutual funds & stocks.
Could you enlighten us on the multiple layesr of security your startup is abiding by?
We use a lot of tech behind the scenes for usability, performance, security. For example our apps have simplified login like no one else. So the user can quickly see their portfolio value even during their daily commute without entering many passwords etc.
But yes, behind the scenes there are multiple layers of security using technology to ensure the wrong person cannot touch your portfolio.
Figuratively speaking, the traditional process of filling in KYC can be a little monotonous. Can technology come to aid?
To truly simplify wealth creation Cube looks has a two-pronged approach. There are things technology can do better. When you can share basic financial details & do boring things like KYC in a few clicks why would you waste an hour talking to a traditional bank advisor? On the flip side, why would you spend time studying the markets when a dedicated Wealth Coach and excellent market advisors can do it for you? There’s a sweet spot between the 100% human-centric old guard and the new wild west of investment apps – that’s where Cube Wealth sits. The best of human and tech.
What are your finances like? Could you share some numbers?
We raised $2 million in 2016. We have built the company from this money. Our investors come from all parts of the globe and they love our long term mission.
Where do you see Cube in a few years down the line?
The plan is to scale up Cube so that many more busy professionals can create wealth using our knowledge and platform.

WA Police deploys mobile tracking app to locate officers in real-time – Strategy – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

All on-duty police officers in Western Australia can now be located in real-time thanks to a new application developed as part of WA Police’s OneForce digital policing program.
The app, dubbed OneForce Locate, has been built to give the force complete visibility of its 4000-plus frontline officers across the state when they’re in the field.
It is one of a number of mobile apps that officers can now use to perform policing functions, following the deployment of iPhone 11 smartphones over the course of the past five months.
Developed in partnership with Modis Australia (previously Ajilon), OneForce Locate allows officers to view their location, status and current duties, as well as that of their colleagues.
The app – which is also available as a desktop or web app – can also be used by supervisors to push notifications to officers in order to coordinate incident response.
With the largest geographical area of any police jurisdiction in the world, WA Police – like other law enforcement agencies – has previously struggled to locate its officers in real-time.
Chief information officer Andrew Cann told iTnews the force previously used a combination of in-car computer aided dispatch (CAD) and police radios to locate officers.
However, this presented a problem when officers left their vehicle to perform any policing duties or were patrolling on a bike or horseback.
“Whilst we have vehicle locations, once officers get out of the vehicle and start walking … we had no idea where they were,” he said.
But with the app, Cann said the GPS location of each officer was now updated every five seconds, though this is dependent on triangulation from a mobile network.
“If you’re deep inside a building, it has trouble giving us a precise location, but we generally find that if they’re out on the road it’s within about five metres,” he said.
The app has helped officers to quickly locate their colleagues, with Cann citing an example where the app was used to locate a canine officer in northern WA after he left the roadside.
“The officer ran through the bush with his dog for about four kilometres on this trail, and while he literally had no idea where he was, he was able to call for backup on his radio,” he said.
“And because he had his phone on him, he said [backup] arrived within a minute or two at his precise location because they all used their phones to track down where he was.”
Designed and built with officers
The app, which is hosted on Microsoft Azure as a managed application, was built by a team consisting of both Modis staff and sworn police officers from WA Police’s digital policing unit.
Modis Australia’s solutions, innovation and partners executive general manager Peter Hawkins said having a co-located team ensured the app was built to police specifications.
“The team that delivered this has been embedded with police officers, and that’s what makes a difference,” he said.
“That’s when you get an application that really does what the business needs and makes sense to the individual officers.”
Hawkins said this approach was helped by Modis’ long-standing partnership with WA Police, which has allowed it to develop a “really strong understanding of their technology landscape”.
One such feature within the app built with officers in mind is the ability for officers to toggle the GPS signal on or off depending on whether they’re on duty or not.
“We gave them that so they feel comfortable that we’re not tracking what they do 24 hours a day,” Cann said.
Officers similarly have the ability to assign themselves a role depending on their duties for the day, which is then displayed on the map.
“The BIS [Business Information Systems] team has been very responsive to the needs of the frontline troops and excited to be building systems and apps that really benefit WA Police and the community as well,” Cann said.
The app also meets WA Police’s stringent information security requirements and has been independently pentested.
Since being pushed out to phones in December, OneForce Locate has been tweaked five or six times, including in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, based on officer feedback.
This has been possible because the app is “completely set up with Azure DevOps, and so what that means is it’s really responsive to change”.
Hawkins said this allowed additional functionality to be added to the app for the police response to COVID-19 in a single day in March.
He also said that using native applications, and running OneForce Locate as “platform as a service, rather than on old school VMs”, allowed the force to keep run costs to a minimum.
Policing on the go
OneForce Locate is one of a number of apps now at the disposal of WA police officers, following the rollout of iPhone 11’s over the last five months.
The deployment, which was initially for only frontline officers, has now been extended to all officers after WA Police received additional funding.
Cann said officers could use Motorola’s mobile CAD platform to search backend systems using, and OneForce Search to perform basic name, vehicle and location searches.
Officers can also use the devices to capture and view video and photos and upload the content to Axon’s digital evidence management platform using the Axon Capture app.
In addition, officers now have access to Microsoft Office 365, including Teams, which means they can access email on the go, share files and chat with other officers.
“Officers didn’t even have access to outlook before we did this. Only a limited number of WAPOL personnel could access email on their phone,” Cann said.
“So it’s been a real productivity boom, not just with the apps that we’ve built.”
Cann said the force was now exploring how it could take statements out in the field and have the witness sign them at that time using the iPhones, rather than go back to the station.
“There’s a lot of forms that WA Police officers have to fill out and so it means that they have to take a pile of forms with them on the road,” he said.
“I’d like to be able to convert a lot of that to be electronic and automatically push them through to the right places using workflows.
“We also need to be able to capture family violence and general crime incident information on the phone as well.
“Those couple of things will even more dramatically improve the productivity of the agency.”

Amazon deploys thermal cameras at warehouses – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon has started to use thermal cameras at its warehouses to speed up screening for feverish workers who could be infected with the coronavirus, employees told Reuters.
The cameras in effect measure how much heat people emit relative to their surroundings.
They require less time and contact than forehead thermometers, earlier adopted by Amazon, the workers said.
Cases of the virus have been reported among staff at more than 50 of Amazon’s US warehouses.
That has prompted some workers to worry for their safety and walk off the job.
Unions and elected officials have called on Amazon to close buildings down.
The use of cameras, previously unreported, shows how America’s second-biggest corporate employer is exploring methods to contain the virus’ spread without shuttering warehouses essential to its operation.
US states have given Amazon the green light to deliver goods with nearly all the country under stay-at-home orders.
In France, Amazon has closed six of its fulfillment centers temporarily – one of the biggest fallouts yet from a dispute with workers over the risks of coronavirus contagion.
Other companies that have explored using the thermal camera technology include Tyson Foods and Intel.
The camera systems, which garnered widespread use at airports in Asia after the SARS epidemic in 2003, can cost between US$5,000 and $20,000.
This week and last, Amazon set up the hardware for the thermal cameras in at least six warehouses outside Los Angeles and Seattle, where the company is based, according to employees and posts on social media.
Thermal cameras will also replace thermometers at worker entrances to many of Amazon’s Whole Foods stores, according to a recent staff note seen by Reuters and previously reported by Business Insider.
The company performs a second, forehead thermometer check on anyone flagged by the cameras to determine an exact temperature, one of the workers said.
An international standard requires the extra check, though one camera system maker said the infrared scan is more accurate than a thermometer.
How widely Amazon will deploy the technology at a time when camera makers are grappling with a surge in demand could not be determined.
A Whole Foods representative said cameras ordered weeks ago were starting to arrive for use.
Amazon confirmed that some warehouses have implemented the systems to streamline checks. The company is taking temperatures “to support the health and safety of our employees, who continue to provide a critical service in our communities,” it said in a statement.
Early this month, Amazon said it would offer face masks and start checking hundreds of thousands of people for fevers daily at all its US and European warehouses. Associates walk up to a Plexiglas screen, and an employee on the other side scans their forehead by pointing a thermometer through a small hole.
That process has not been without challenges. A worker performing temperature checks in Houston said his proximity to associates made him uncomfortable, in spite of the screen separating them.
“I didn’t sign up for this,” he said.
A Los Angeles-area employee, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said a line once formed outside her warehouse, and employees could not receive masks until after they had entered the building and had their temperatures taken.
The thermal camera system is faster, two other workers said, with no stopping in front of a screen necessary. The cameras connect to a computer so an employee at a distance can view the results, one said.
Amazon did not disclose whose gadgets it was using.
One of the employees, at a warehouse outside Seattle, said the technology came from Infrared Cameras Inc (ICI) in Texas. Reached by phone, ICI’s chief executive, Gary Strahan, said he would not confirm or deny his company’s working with Amazon.
Other purveyors include UK-based Thermoteknix and US-based FLIR Systems.

iOS exploit chain deploys “LightSpy” feature-rich malware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A watering hole was discovered on January 10, 2020 utilizing a full remote iOS exploit chain to deploy a feature-rich implant named LightSpy. The site appears to have been designed to target users in Hong Kong based on the content of the landing page. Since the initial activity, we released two private reports exhaustively detailing spread, exploits, infrastructure and LightSpy implants.

Landing page of watering hole site

We are temporarily calling this APT group “TwoSail Junk”. Currently, we have hints from known backdoor callbacks to infrastructure about clustering this campaign with previous activity. And we are working with colleagues to tie LightSpy with prior activity from a long running Chinese-speaking APT group, previously reported on as Spring Dragon/Lotus Blossom/Billbug(Thrip), known for their Lotus Elise and Evora backdoor malware. Considering this LightSpy activity has been disclosed publicly by our colleagues from TrendMicro, we would like to further contribute missing information to the story without duplicating content. And, in our quest to secure technologies for a better future, we reported the malware and activity to Apple and other relevant companies.
This supplemental information can be difficult to organize to make for easy reading. In light of this, this document is broken down into several sections.

Deployment timeline – additional information clarifying LightSpy deployment milestone events, including both exploit releases and individual LightSpy iOS implant component updates.
Spreading – supplemental technical details on various techniques used to deliver malicious links to targets
Infrastructure – supplemental description of a TwoSail Junk RDP server, the LightSpy admin panel, and some related server-side javascript
Android implant and a pivot into evora – additional information on an Android implant and related infrastructure. After pivoting from the infrastructure in the previous section, we find related implants and backdoor malware, helping to connect this activity to previously known SpringDragon APT with low confidence.

More information about LightSpy is available to customers of Kaspersky Intelligence Reporting. Contact: [email protected]
Deployment timeline
During our investigation, we observed the actor modifying some components involved in the exploit chain on February 7, 2020 with major changes, and on March 5, 2020 with minor ones.

Figure 1. Brief LightSpy event timeline

The first observed version of the WebKit exploit dated January 10, 2020 closely resembled a proof of concept (PoC), containing elements such as buttons, alert messages, and many log statements throughout. The second version commented out or removed many of the log statements, changed alert() to print() statements, and also introduced some language errors such as “your device is not support…” and “stab not find…”.
By analyzing the changes in the first stage WebKit exploit, we discovered the list of supported devices was also significantly extended:Table 1. iOS version exploit support expansion

As seen above, the actor was actively changing implant components, which is why we are providing a full list of historical hashes in the IoC section at the end of this report. There were many minor changes that did not directly affect the functionality of each component, but there were also some exceptions to this that will be expanded on below. Based on our observations of these changes over a relatively short time frame, we can assess that the actor implemented a fairly agile development process, with time seemingly more important than stealthiness or quality.
One interesting observation involved the “EnvironmentalRecording” plugin (MD5: ae439a31b8c5487840f9ad530c5db391), which was a dynamically linked shared library responsible for recording surrounding audio and phone calls. On February 7, 2020, we noticed a new binary (MD5: f70d6b3b44d855c2fb7c662c5334d1d5) with the same name with no similarities to the earlier one. This new file did not contain any environment paths, version stamps, or any other traces from the parent plugin pattern. Its sole purpose was to clean up the implant components by erasing all files located in “/var/iolight/”, “/bin/light/”, and “/bin/irc_loader/”. We’re currently unsure whether the actor intended to replace the original plugin with an uninstall package or if this was a result of carelessness or confusion from the rapid development process.
Another example of a possible mistake involved the “Screenaaa” plugin. The first version (MD5: 35fd8a6eac382bfc95071d56d4086945) that was deployed on January 10, 2020 did what we expected: It was a small plugin designed to capture a screenshot, create a directory, and save the capture file in JPEG format. However, the plugin (MD5: 7b69a20920d3b0e6f0bffeefdce7aa6c) with the same name that was packaged on February 7 had a completely different functionality. This binary was actually a LAN scanner based on MMLanScan, an open source project for iOS that helps scan a network to show available devices along with their MAC addresses, hostname, and manufacturer. Most likely, this plugin was mistakenly bundled up in the February 7 payload with the same name as the screenshot plugin.

Spreading
We cannot say definitively that we have visibility into all of their spreading mechanisms. We do know that in past campaigns, precise targeting of individuals was performed over various social network platforms with direct messaging. And, both ours and previous reporting from others have documented TwoSail Junk’s less precise and broad use of forum posts and replies. These forum posts direct individuals frequenting these sites to pages hosting iframes served from their exploit servers. We add Telegram channels and instagram posts to the list of communication channels abused by these attackers.
These sites and communication medium are known to be frequented by some activist groups.

The initial watering hole site (hxxps://appledaily.googlephoto[.]vip/news[.]html) on January 10, 2020 was designed to mimic a well known Hong Kong based newspaper “Apple Daily” by copy-pasting HTML content from the original:

Figure 4. Source of html page mimicking newspaper “Apple Daily”

However, at that time, we had not observed any indications of the site being purposely distributed in the wild. Based on our KSN detection statistics, we began seeing a massive distribution campaign beginning on February 18, 2020.

Table 2. LightSpy related iframe domains, urls, and first seen timestamps

Starting on February 18, the actors began utilizing a series of invisible iframes to redirect potential victims to the exploit site as well as the intended legitimate news site from the lure.

Infrastructure
RDP Clues
The domain used for the initial watering hole page (googlephoto[.]vip) was registered through GoDaddy on September 24, 2019. No unmasked registration information was able to be obtained for this domain. The subdomain (appledaily.googlephoto[.]vip) began resolving to a non-parked IP address (103.19.9[.]185) on January 10, 2020 and has not moved since. The server is located in Singapore and is hosted by Beyotta Network, LLP.
At the time of our initial investigation, the server was listening on ports 80 (HTTP) and 3389 (RDP with SSL/TLS enabled). The certificate for the server was self-signed and created on December 16, 2019. Based on Shodan data as early as December 21, 2019, there was a currently logged in user detected who’s name was “SeinandColt”.

Admin Panel
The C2 server for the iOS payload (45.134.1[.]180) also appeared to have an admin panel on TCP port 50001.

The admin panel seems to be a Vue.js application bundled with Webpack. It contains two language packs: English and Chinese. A cursory analysis provides us the impression of actual scale of the framework:

If we take a closer look at the index.js file for the panel, some interesting configurations are visible, to include a user config, an application list, log list, and other interesting settings.
The “userConfig” variable indicates other possible platforms that may have been targeted by the same actors, such as linux, windows, and routers.

Another interesting setting includes the “app_list” variable which is commented out. This lists two common applications used for streaming and chat mostly in China (QQ and Miapoi). Looking further, we can also see that the default map coordinates in the config point directly to the Tian’anmen Gate in Beijing, however, most likely this is just a common and symbolic mapping application default for the center of Beijing.

Android implants and a pivot into “evora”
During analysis of the infrastructure related to iOS implant distribution we also found a link directing to Android malware – hxxp://app.hkrevolution[.]club/HKcalander[.]apk (MD5: 77ebb4207835c4f5c4d5dfe8ac4c764d).
According to artefacts found in google cache, this link was distributed through Telegram channels “winuxhk” and “brothersisterfacebookclub”, and Instagram posts in late November 2019 with a message lure in Chinese translated as “The Hong Kong People Calendar APP is online ~~~ Follow the latest Hong Kong Democracy and Freedom Movement. Click to download and support the frontline. Currently only Android version is available.”
Further technical analysis of the packed APK reveals the timestamp of its actual build – 2019-11-04 18:12:33. Also it uses the subdomain, sharing an iOS implant distribution domain, as its c2 server – hxxp://svr.hkrevolution[.]club:8002.
Its code contains a link to another related domain:

Checking this server we found it hosted another related APK:

The distribution vector remains the same – Telegram channels:

The latest observed APK sample is hosted on a server that is unusual for the campaign context – xxinc-media[.]oss-cn-shenzhen.aliyuncs[.]com. We assume that the actors are taking steps to split the iOS and Android activities between different infrastructure pieces.

We had not observed any indications of this URL being distributed in the wild yet.
If we take a look closer at the domain poorgoddaay[.]com that not only hosted the malicious APK but also was a C2 for them, we can note that there are two subzones of particular interest to us:

zg.poorgoddaay[.]com
ns1.poorgoddaay[.]com

We were able to work with partners to pivot into a handful of “evora” samples that use the above two subzones as their C2. Taking that a step further, using our Kaspersky Threat Attribution Engine (KTAE), we can see that the partner samples using those subzones are 99% similar to previous backdoors deployed by SpringDragon.

We are aware of other related and recent “evora” malware samples calling back to these same subnets while targeting organizations in Hong Kong as well. These additional factors help lend at least low confidence to clustering this activity with SpringDragon/LotusBlossom/Billbug.
Conclusion
This particular framework and infrastructure is an interesting example of an agile approach to developing and deploying surveillance framework in Southeast Asia. This innovative approach is something we have seen before from SpringDragon, and LightSpy targeting geolocation at least falls within previous regional targeting of SpringDragon/LotusBlossom/Billbug APT, as does infrastructure and “evora” backdoor use.

Israel deploys cyber-monitoring against coronavirus, tells people not to leave home – Networking – Security – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Israeli government began deploying cellphone-monitoring technology against the coronavirus on Tuesday and urged people not to leave home unless necessary.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet approved emergency regulations enabling the Shin Bet security service to tap into cellular data to retrace the movements of the infected.
The data, customarily used for anti-terrorism, will be used by the Health Ministry to locate and alert those who have been in their vicinity, the government said.
Such cyber monitoring would normally require parliamentary ratification and judicial oversight. Netanyahu, who announced the measure on Monday, circumvented the process by invoking the emergency orders.
In a separate move, the Health Ministry published new directives telling people to largely remain at home. A Justice Ministry official described the directives as recommendations rather than compulsory measures that can be enforced by police.
Separately, Israel’s Defence Ministry said 2,500 military reservists were being called up to help manage the crisis.
The Health Ministry directives added beaches and parks to a list of places – including schools, shopping malls, restaurants and theatres – that have been closed to the public. No more than 10 people are supposed to gather together.
But the ministry said Israelis could still go to work – many businesses are operating with reduced staff to try to halt the virus’s spread – shop for food and medicine, exercise briefly outdoors and walk their dogs.
In a signal the restrictions could prove protracted, a Health Ministry official said Israelis celebrating Passover next month should do so “with nuclear family only”. A highlight of the Jewish calendar, Passover is usually a time for hosting extended family and guests, and sees a tourism influx to Israel.
The use of anti-terrorism technology to track infected people and anyone with whom they have come in contact drew criticism from civil rights groups when Netanyahu first proposed it over the weekend.
Israeli authorities said the cyber monitoring, in effect for the next two weeks, was aimed only at halting the spread of coronavirus and would ultimately be deleted.
But The Association for Civil Rights in Israel called the move “a dangerous precedent and a slippery slope”.
Gabi Ashkenazi, a senior member of the centrist Blue and White Party, also criticised the use of emergency orders.
“It’s inappropriate to approve such a measure in this manner, without public and parliamentary supervision,” he wrote on Twitter.
His party leader, former general Benny Gantz, could be the next prime minister after he was tapped by Israel’s president on Monday to try to form a new government following a March 2 election, the third within a year
However Justice Minister Amir Ohana dismissed the criticism.
“The concerns of those disturbed by cyber monitoring are outweighed by the threat we are facing,” he told Israel Radio.
There are 324 confirmed coronavirus cases in Israel. In the Palestinian territories, 41 have been confirmed in the occupied West Bank, with none in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian government instructed Palestinians working in Israel to find accommodation there, saying they would be barred from travelling there as of Friday. It also asked Palestinians to cease working in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank as a precaution against a coronavirus spread.
