Today announced it has delivered the industry’s highest-performance virtual DDoS defense solution with its software version of the Thunder Threat Protection System (TPS) solution, vThunder TPS. The enhanced vThunder TPS provides 100 Gbps throughput in a single virtual appliance and can be expanded to 800 Gbps with eight-way clustering. As a result, service providers can build elastic DDoS defenses that can be incrementally scaled during wartime when peak capacity is required. vThunder TPS is compact and efficient, allowing it to be deployed in next-generation mobile edge compute (MEC) environments, conserving space and power while providing powerful DDoS protection.
5G mobile operators and cloud service providers are increasingly moving from purpose-built hardware-centric infrastructures to be more agile and virtualized. These operators need DDoS defenses that can keep pace with this movement toward elastic, virtualized private clouds. The transition to 5G makes this even more critical as operators need to be able to ensure the availability of business services against the potential for large DDoS attacks, particularly during high-visibility times like global sporting events and seasonal shopping spikes. DDoS attacks will only increase in severity as operators expand services to support IoT-driven energy, agriculture, transportation, healthcare and manufacturing.
vThunder TPS provides operators a cost-efficient way to protect their networks and infrastructures without over-provisioning DDoS defense capacity. vThunder TPS provides customers:

Cloud-ready DDoS Defense: Customers are able to gain deployment and operational flexibility with DDoS defenses that support major private cloud platforms including KVM, VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V. A high-performance 100 Gbps virtual appliance can scale to 800 Gbps with eight-way clustering to meet the performance needs of 5G mobile operators and cloud providers.
Agility and Scalability: With A10’s FlexPool® licensing, capacity can be scaled up in hours via license allocation rather than in weeks or months required for hardware purchasing, delivery and installation. Capacity can be scaled back down by reallocating licenses to other points of presence when intermittent demand subsides. A10’s subscription price model also provides lower start-up and upgrade costs.
Comprehensive Protection: When combined with the Orion 5G Security Suite, vThunder TPS provides high-performance DDoS detection and mitigation and protection against other threats across mobile and cloud network infrastructures.

AvailabilityvThunder TPS is available now. vThunder TPS with 100 Gbps performance is available in March 2020.

Valentine credit data crackdown delivers kiss of death for online fraud – Finance – Networking – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

It might be Valentine’s Day, but there will be no bouquets for debt collectors and online payment card fraudsters hoarding personal details, all thanks to a small but lethal tweak quietly delivered by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
From today, credit information providers across Australia will be legally required to share information, between themselves, on when a consumer has asked for a ban on new credit applications – the ground floor door for online fraudsters establishing bogus credit cards and loans.
It’s a small, common sense and incremental change that flies in the face of all the fear and loathing peddled by cyber security vendors and will require no big spend on new detection systems, software and widely loathed PCI-DSS upgrades that can cost more than they save.
But it’s set to have a big effect, because it closes a yawning hole scammers have been exploiting for decades thanks to the opaque nature of consumer credit hygiene reporting used by banks, credit cards utilities and telcos.
The crackdown comes in the form of amendments to the Credit Reporting Code 2014 overseen by the OAIC and requires agencies that check your credit score to now ping each other to check if you’ve requested an active stop on fresh credit being issued in your name.
What that means is that if you’ve been a victim of identity fraud, or had your card or accounts compromised, crooks will find it a lot harder to just keep signing you up for new products that are then looted, leaving consumers to clean up the mess.
The OAIC’s small step is also important because once it bites, it’s likely to lessen the utility and dark market resale value of stolen Australian credentials used by fraudsters to impersonate legitimate customers.
Credit cards are the big prize for ID fraudsters, because once bogus accounts are set up across multiple issuing banks it can be between 50 days to three months before a sting is discovered, often when bills aren’t paid and are sent through to ‘collection’ – or the debt collectors.
And it’s those defaults that then wind up on a customer’s credit file, with the victim often only finding out when debt collectors come calling with threats of legal action, triggering a long and painful disputation process.
It’s a regulatory loophole the credit fraudsters have driven a truck through for years.
Amazingly, until now, there has been no formal requirement for credit bureaus to share consumer requests for new credit stops between themselves, resulting in identity theft victims being forced to go agency by agency to prevent their stolen credentials from being repeatedly misused.
We’ll get to the important and ignominious relationship between debt collectors and credit agencies in a moment, because there’s a track record of poor, often illegal behaviour and fraud victim exploitation
The challenge for ID fraud victims, especially in the age of digital onboarding and screen scraping, is that it’s not just loans or credit cards that get maxed-out by fraudsters. In the main, banks are vigilant to fraud and can and do act quickly upon detection.
The real consumer sting is for phone services, gas, electricity, cable television packages and now increasingly buy-now pay-later and merchant credit facilities (think tech, tools and tradies) that are used to milk out value.
The typologies are not that sophisticated, but they are effective. Sign-up for a two year mobile phone plan on a stolen card and and credentials, shift the phone.
Take the poor value (but easy to get) monthly instalment plan for a high-end gaming laptop. The list goes on.
Enter the debt collectors and the credit bureaus, who for the most part are joined at the hip.
Once the payments made using stolen credentials or instruments stop and the bills mount up (remember the 50-day interest free period), the fraud victim usually only finds out when they get a menacing phone call to pay.
As previously reported by iTnews, not all debt collectors are empathetic to the plight of fraud victims.
They and can, and do, sometimes harass and threaten fraud victims to get the money allegedly owed, irrespective of the evidence, abusing their substantial powers and aggravating the harm to victims.
Queensland based debt collector Panthera is currently being prosecuted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for multiple instances of unconscionable conduct that all revolve around the alleged hounding of fraud victims to pay debts they did not incur.
The key allegation in the ACCC case is that Panthera broke the law because it used “undue harassment” stemming from “repeatedly pursuing payment from each of the consumers, and continuing to require onerous documentation from each consumer after they had informed Panthera of the basis on which they were not in fact liable for the debt being pursued”.
In one of the incidents alleged by the ACCC in the Panthera case, the debt collector extracted $100 from a victim who had a Telstra Mobile Broadband account fraudulently taken out in their name under the pretext of a credit default being removed (it wasn’t, despite the money being paid).
Put that behaviour in the context of credit bureaus not telling each other when a stop on new credit has been requested and it’s not hard to see how criminals milk the same victim multiple times over.
“These changes make it easier for people to prevent identity and credit fraud. Consumers can ask credit reporting bodies to notify each other about the consumer’s request to place a ban period on credit applications, OAIC Commissioner Angelena Falk said back in December when the changes were flagged.
The amendments will also set strict timeframes “for processing corrections to consumer credit reports” as well as limiting what information can be kept on credit files.
The seamy end of the credit and debt collection industry will never smell of roses, but from today it will stink that little bit less.

Ads We Like: Janelle Monáe delivers a powerful message for The New York Times’ ‘1619 Project’- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Janelle Monáe stands in a bay in Virginia, the waves lapping at her feet. She is not there as a star on the red carpet – instead she is an advocate for social justice.
The commercial for The New York Times’ ‘The 1619 Project’ finds Monae at the water’s edge off the coast of Hampton, Virginia at Point Comfort, the site where the first enslaved Africans were recorded being brought to Britain’s North American colonies; this same location inspired the cover photo for ‘The 1619 Project’ magazine issue.
In her short monologue, she states “No aspect of the country we know today has been untouched by the slavery that followed.” The viewer is left to ponder that thought as they stare at the gray bay. It then types in “Words from ‘The 1619 Project: How Slavery Shaped America’.”
‘The 1619 Project’ and its impact is the centerpiece of the next wave of ads from The New York Times’s ‘The Truth Is Worth It’ brand campaign. The commercial will premiere during the Oscars on 9 February and feature singer, actor and producer Monáe.
“Our role as an independent news organization is to unearth the facts and surface important voices that increase understanding of the world we live in. ‘The 1619 Project’ is an example of the power and importance of telling these stories,” said Dean Baquet, executive editor, The New York Times.
The campaign’s central message, “The truth can change how we see the world,” highlights how deeply reported journalism, like ‘The 1619 Project,’ has sparked thoughtful conversations about the foundational role slavery has played in our nation by examining the forces shaping our past, present and future.
The campaign, which includes national television, digital, social media and print advertising, was developed in collaboration with creative agency Droga5.
Nikole Hannah-Jones, Times journalist and architect of “The 1619 Project,” said: “Every American child learns about the Mayflower. Yet, a ship called the White Lion that arrived in 1619 and the people it carried is just as important to the story of America. Our reporting excavated this moment in our history and in doing ignited a fierce debate among historians, academics and readers of all kinds and all ages. But that’s the power of The New York Times — to spark an important dialogue that allows us to reexamine our assumptions.”

SAP’s new leadership duo delivers in-line results, lifts guidance – Finance – Strategy – Cloud – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

SAP raised its revenue and profit outlook on Tuesday as new co-CEOs Jennifer Morgan and Christian Klein delivered a solid first set of quarterly results at the leading provider of business software.
Morgan and Klein took over in October from long-time CEO Bill McDermott, who in his final year in charge let go of 4 percent of SAP’s staff and launched a new long-term strategy focused on organic growth and improvements in efficiency.
That put the emphasis for the new leadership team on execution, in particular encouraging SAP’s customers to adopt its latest S/4HANA database and switch to subscription-based services hosted at remote datacenters.
“We are seeing a huge acceleration into the cloud,” Klein told reporters on a conference call.
Europe’s most valuable technology company now expects adjusted operating profit to grow by between 8 percent and 13 percent in 2020, while confirming its ambition of achieving €35 billion (US$38.8 billion) in revenue in 2023.
SAP, based in the small Rhineland town of Walldorf, has set a target of boosting margins by one percentage point a year. Acquisition-related costs slowed progress in 2019, but margin boosting should accelerate this year.
“We have great expectations for continued efficiency gains and expansion of our profitability in 2020,” said Chief Financial Officer Luka Mucic.
SAP forecast that non-IFRS operating profit will reach €8.9-€9.3 billion in 2020, while revenues are expected to gain 6-8 percent to €29.2-€29.7 billion .
At the mid-point of that guidance, margins would increase by 120 basis points to 30.9 percent in 2020, compared to an 80 basis point gain last year, he told reporters.
In the fourth quarter, non-IFRS operating margin at constant currency was 35.2 percent, up a percentage point from a year earlier, and just above a median forecast of 35 percent in a poll of analysts by Vara Research.
Non-IFRS operating profits, which strip out one-off items such as restructuring charges, gained by 9 percent to €2.8 billion in the fourth quarter at constant currency, in line with analyst expectations.
Unadjusted profit fell, however, by 11 percent on account of the restructuring exercise and costs related to the US$8 billion takeover in 2018 of Qualtrics, which specialises in measuring customer sentiment.
(US$1 = 0.9014 euros)

Cherry Viola switch delivers mechanical feel at membrane pricing – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Mechanical switch maker Cherry waited until the final day of the Consumer Electronics Show to announce its latest product. The new Viola mechanical switch is a value-oriented product built on a solder-free design that offers 2mm of pre-travel, 4mm of total travel and 45 cN of actuation force.
The Viola switch uses an industry standard cross-stem design for attaching the keycaps. They are hot-swappable and fully compatible with LED lighting systems that seem to be all the rage with gamers these days. The team at Cherry spent over a year designing the new switch, we’re told, and will be building them in Germany alongside their other switches.

In testing, TechCrunch said the switch resembled a quiet MX Brown switch. Tom’s Hardware noted that it had a less tactile and clicky feel than other mechanical keyboards and was somewhat quieter, too. Despite those characteristics, it didn’t have a mushy, low-profile feel like a membrane keyboard, the publication added.
Cherry hasn’t yet provided guidance with regard to how many keystrokes the switches will be rated for although that will likely come as we get closer to launch. The first Viola keyswitch-equipped keyboards should be coming down the pipe soon starting around the $50 mark.

Tesco Christmas ad blitz delivers record day of food sales- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Tesco’s outgoing chief executive has praised the performance of its festive ad campaign, which helped the retailer deliver its fifth consecutive year of sales growth at Christmas.
It saw a 0.1% increase in UK like-for-like sales in the six weeks to 4 January, while third-quarter revenues overall rose 0.4%.
Presenting its results for the critical period, Dave Lewis today (9 January) said its year-long investment into the BBH-created campaign to celebrate its 100-year anniversary culminated in a successful marketing investment into a Christmas execution which resonated with shoppers.
Most of its advertising budget for the period had been allocated to media, versus blockbuster creative, which saw the campaign run across TV, OOH, press, radio, digital, social, and in-store with an equally heavy spend on PR. Its advertising agency also created a bespoke AR Lens with Snapchat, as well as a Facebook arcade game, which allowed customers to go behind the wheel of Tesco delivery vans.
Lewis claimed this ad blitz saw a rise in key measures around perception of quality and value were, as well as improved reports of ease of shop, colleague helpfulness and availability of products in-store.
“I’ve never seen the business running as well as it did at Christmas,” said Lewis, who will exit the company this year.
“This combination helped us outperform the market against a challenging backdrop.”
Despite concerns that people would curb their spending at Christmas as a result of the election and uncertainty around Brexit, the chief executive claimed he had witnessed “nothing discernible” in shopper behaviour since Boris Johnson was elected.
In fact, on the 23 December the retailer sold more food in one day than any other time in its history.
In comparison, Morrisons reported a 1.7% fall in third-quarter sales while Sainsbury’s was also down 0.7%.
Lewis admitted he was particularly pleased with Tesco’s performance given how “subdued” the market is.
According to the British Retail Consortium, retailers in the UK their worst year for Christmas sales since records began.
While it was positive for Tesco in the UK, at a group level it continues to battle falling sales, which were down 0.8% due to tougher trading in central Europe and Asia.
The company is set to sell of its operations in Thailand and Malaysia.

The New Nintendo Switch Delivers Vastly Improved Battery Life

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

The new, barely changed Nintendo Switch has finally hit the market. It hasn’t been clear what benefits end-users could expect from this new revision of the console — data pointed to better battery life, but not much more than that as far as overall improvements were concerned. Now we’ve got an idea what improvements the new console delivers. Sometimes manufacturers sneak in improvements that aren’t widely played up beforehand, but that’s (mostly) not the case here.

Digital Foundry took the new Switch for a spin and finds that Nintendo lived up to their promises as far as battery life is concerned. Overall system longevity is vastly improved and power consumption has been cut nearly in half, from 13.3W to 7W while playing Breath of the Wild.

Digital-Foundry-Switch-Tests

Image and data by Eurogamer

Battery life at half brightness is now 1.64x better, while full-brightness battery life is 1.78x better. Switching from full brightness to 50 percent brightness improves Switch battery life by 1.17x, for those wondering what the impact of the screen setting is. Overall temperatures are not much reduced — the heat off the internal SoC is 50C instead of 54C. However, DF notes that the Switch is also physically quieter than before, implying that Nintendo may have reduced the fan RPM, choosing to limit noise as opposed to keeping equal cooling and therefore further reducing temperature.

One known reason for the improved battery life may be changes to the display. There are reports that Sharp provided an IGZO panel for the Switch Lite, but it isn’t clear if this covers the new Switch modelSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce as well. However, the display is definitely different, with a magenta tint and an off-white background color compared with the OG Switch.

As for performance, the two devices are almost equivalent. I say almost because, while average frame rates wind up in pretty much exactly the same places on both consoles, there are some specific spots where performance is improved. Digital Foundry has more details on this. Outside of some corner cases, however, overall performance is the same.

Customers who want to try and pick up the newer model with better battery life should look for a console labeled HAC-001(-01) as opposed to HAC-001. Nintendo’s guidance is slightly different, however, indicating that the new Switch will start with a “HAD” label rather than “HAC.” That’s official guidance from the company, so it’s possible that the old HAC-001(-01) / HAC-001 split was for the Asia-Pacific market, and Western consoles will have a different label.

It has not been formally confirmed whether the new Switch is using a Tegra X1 chip built on a more advanced process node, but we suspect it is. The new Switch uses the same size battery as the old Switch. While screens are major drivers of power consumption, the Switch uses a comparatively low-resolution display to start with. While changing the displayed resolution of a panel does nothing to change how much power it consumes, the absolute number of pixels in the display does impact overall power consumption. Android Authority did a comparison of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL earlier this year and calculated out the impact of 1440p versus 1080p on power consumption after taking the XL’s larger battery into account. Using a 1080p panel instead of a 1440p panel increased battery life by 1.1x at the same battery capacity.

Since the Switch uses a lower-resolution panel to start with, we wouldn’t expect the panel technology alone to account for a gain this large, but details will have to wait for a formal device teardown. There’s no sign of a fix for JoyCon drift — this problem continues to hit Switch owners, though Nintendo now offers a free repair program for affected customers. There’s also no secondary improvements, like the better Wi-Fi, improved 3D effects, NFC support, or other improvements that Nintendo introduced with the New 3DS relative to the 3DS, but Nintendo also isn’t trying to position this like a major console update. The entire idea is that customers with the newer variant get better battery life, but nobody should feel left behind if they don’t have the latest edition.
