Dazn unites OTT, social & VOD football deals to ‘rival’ club and league offerings- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Dazn Media has united the group’s football media assets for the first time, meaning that advertisers can make a splash around major football events across OTT, social and VOD.
This centralised sponsorship package, it claims, can reach as much 400 million fans across Goal, sponsorship of VOD on Dazn and Goal’s YouTube channels, and the Dazn Player video network which also sits on third-party sites like Mail Online, MSN and Kicker.de.
Dazn Media’s increasingly courting advertisers across its vast sports empire, increasingly it is positioning as a creative solution with an understanding of social football fandoms to these brands entering its ecosystem. Since its 2018 restructure from Perform Group, it has been looking to unify these products into a single point of purchase.
Kim Parker, vice president of activation at Dazn Media, told Tempemail that it has taken some time to unite the products.
“One of the key strengths is our ability to reach a mass audience through our global platforms, but with fan-targeted capabilities.” Most recently, this was bolstered with the growth of the Dazn OTT service’s ad product. “We can reach fans at every stage of their content journey, including pre, during and post-event.”
Brands like New Balance, Nissan and Santander helped inform the group’s development of its global football package, “it is an attractive proposition and delivers greater value for brands”.
Dazn is positioning the product as an alternative to traditional club or league sponsorships that “are not always available or may not necessarily represent the best value”. We’ve seen recently that Chelsea FC is opening up to shorter-term deals, showing that space at the top teams could be freed up in the coming years without clashing with long-term partners.
Parker is on the hunt for brands keen to align with premium football. He anticipates more spend from food delivery, electric cars, FX Trading and the tech unicorns in the coming years.
“We’re also seeing brands from key growth markets investing more heavily in football, as well as the more traditional brands, who could either see this as a platform to activate their current sponsorships or as an alternative to their sponsorship.”
“With the introduction of advertising on Dazn, we’ve seen brands such as Volkswagen are advertising on Dazn in multiple markets and now we can now combine all of our media assets to provide more flexible, creative and contextual ways of integrating a brand into our global media network.”
Currently, this package focused only on football but boxing, tennis, and motorsports are next on the slate. Parker concluded: “We are constantly looking to work with brands in more integrated and creative ways.”
Stefano D’Anna, executive vice president of media at Dazn Group said: “We feel this is a step-change in how brands can align with premium football and target fans. It’s a package that will rival any mainstream football sponsorship.
“Football content consumption is fragmenting and reaching modern digital audiences is getting harder and harder. By aggregating our assets, we can offer a brand the best global football with localised relevance. All underpinned by digital targeting, delivery and reporting that ensures accountability and limits wastage.”
In select markets, Dazn’s rights include more than 95 leagues and competitions, including the Premier League, Uefa Champions League, FA Cup, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Copa del Rey, and more.

NBN Co will stop direct deals with enterprise customers – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

NBN Co has yielded to industry blowback over its enterprise and government business, declaring it will stop contracting directly with users and share sales leads with retailers.
The decision is likely to end what had become an increasingly combative relationship between NBN Co and retail service providers (RSPs) over NBN Co’s participation in the lucrative enterprise and government (E&G) market.
As reported by iTnews in December, RSPs had two main issues with NBN Co: its insistence on overbuilding their existing dark fibre into commercial buildings, and its insistence on striking deals directly with end users, despite being a wholesale-only entity.
On Tuesday this week, NBN Co said it would stop overbuilding others’ fibre and try to use it instead to serve E&G customers.
Now, NBN Co has also said it will let RSPs own the relationship with E&G users, instead of striking direct deals.
“In response to this feedback, NBN Co will evolve its enterprise contracting model so that RSPs will in all cases have the direct contractual relationship with enterprise customers,” NBN Co said in a statement.
“Previously, NBN Co has at times contracted directly with enterprise customers to build connectivity ahead of those customers engaging one or more RSPs to provide operational broadband services.
“The company will continue to engage with enterprise customers through its engagement team to understand their infrastructure requirements, and to educate and stimulate demand for nbn wholesale services.”
NBN Co will run consultations with industry on both issues.
On today’s backdown, it will canvas “how any sales leads or inbound interest should best be shared with the industry on a transparent and non-discriminatory basis.”
This means it has taken onboard industry suggestions to establish some form of channel program where leads can be farmed out to RSPs.
NBN Co said it would publish a consultation paper on how it will manage E&G relationships and leads by February 7.
“We are making this announcement now to enable prompt, equal and transparent awareness of this intent amongst all customers, RSPs and other interested parties,” it said.
The backdown was immediately welcomed by Macquarie Telecom.
“Macquarie Telecom welcomes the decision by NBN Co to avoid direct enterprise deals while continuing to educate corporate customers on the benefits of using NBN in conjunction with RSPs,” group executive Luke Clifton said in a statement.
Comment was also being sought from other RSPs at the time of publication.
NBN Co has been under sustained pressure to change its approach to the E&G market since receiving a formal warning from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in October last year.
An iTnews investigation published in December last year found that little had changed in the two months following the formal warning, and that industry remained aggrieved with NBN Co’s attitude and perceived lack of action on key points, such as direct dealing and overbuilding of existing commercial networks.
The criticism had ramped up substantially in the past week, with Optus breaking its long silence on the issue, and Vocus calling for NBN Co’s industry engagement team – which has made direct outreach to hundreds of top E&G accounts – to be shut down or structurally separated from the rest of the company.
At the same time, NBN Co’s E&G approach faced fresh scrutiny from the ACCC over concerns that it was undercutting existing commercial operators using a cross-subsidy from its residential network.
The increasingly combative environment was never going to play to NBN Co’s favour, given it sees the business market eventually contributing up to 20 percent of its total revenues.

Nokia signs 63 commercial 5G deals globally- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Finnish company Nokia has announced it has signed 63 commercial 5G contracts worldwide, positioning it as a global leader in the delivery of end-to-end 5G solutions. The client list includes customers such as AT&T, Korea Telecom, LG Uplus, NTT DOCOMO, SK Telecom, SoftBank, Sprint, STC, T-Mobile US, Verizon, Vodafone Italy and Zain Saudi from the key 5G early adopter and progressive markets.
“This milestone highlights the quality and customer confidence in our 5G portfolio and we expect this to continue this year with the addition of many more new deals,” Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said in a statement.
The 63 signed commercial contracts exclude any other type of 5G agreements, such as paid network trials, pilots or demonstrations. If such agreements were to be included, the total number of 5G agreements would reach over 100, said the company.
“Our global end-to-end portfolio includes products and services for every part of a network, which are helping network operators to enable key 5G capabilities such as network slicing, distributed cloud and the industrial Internet of Things (IoT),” Uitto elaborated.
Nokia have more than 350 customers in 4G and the first 63 5G customers represent some two thirds of its global Radio Access Networks business in a typical year.
“Further, these 63 contracts — across low bands, middle bands and high bands, and across traditional and cloud network architectures — provide us with invaluable early experiences and insights for the benefit of the rest of the world. So, it is a great start”, the Nokia executive said.
Nokia has globally available end-to-end product portfolio that covers all 5G network elements, including radio, core, cloud and transport as well as management, automation and security. Approximately 60 per cent of Nokia’s 5G customers select more than just New Radio from its end-to-end portfolio.
The company declared more than 2 000 5G patent families as essential for 5G, a year after making its first declarations for the standard.

The youngest new partner at the venture firm Felicis Ventures, Niki Pezeshki, on how he wins deals – gpgmail

Felicis Ventures has, in its roughly 13 years of existence, established a reputation in venture circles as a smart early-stage investment firm that’s willing to make bets almost anywhere in the world. Founded by ex-Googler Aydin Senkut, the San Francisco-based firm has also demonstrated a knack for attracting talented investors into the fold, including another former Google executive, Wesley Chan; Sundeep Peechu, who held various product roles at Intel before joining the firm in 2010; and Renata Quintini, an investor who Felicis eventually lost to Lux Capital (which more recently lost her to her own firm, Renegade Partners, which is reportedly raising a $300 million debut fund).

We talked this morning with yet another member of Felicis, Niki Pezeshki, who, following several promotions, has just became the youngest partner in the firm’s history. For aspiring VCs out there, we wondered how Pezeshki landed the role — and how he’s managing to win deals. Following is part of that conversation, edited lightly for length.

TC: Everyone wants to work in VC. How did you land this gig?

NP: Out of undergrad [at the University of Southern California], I went to work for [private equity firm] Vista Equity Partners. They hire, like, four people out of undergrad every year at USC. I was in Austin [where the firm is based] for three years. It was amazing. I didn’t know what I was getting into at the time — Vista has blossomed into this incredible fund — but it grounded me in the fundamentals of business and what is a good software investment. I think it made me more numbers-focused than a lot of other venture capitalists. I may get flamed for saying this, but I come to the world of venture with a much more numbers-driven and formulaic approach to understanding business that I think helps me pick good investments.

TC: How did you wind up in the Bay Area?

NP: My family is from LA so I came to California to work for Climate Corp. for a year; I worked in sales strategy and operations. I wanted a bit of operating experience. But I love investing so much; I wanted to go back to it. So I got a job with [PE firm] Summit Partners, where you’re doing hardcore outbound sourcing and learning how to reach out to people and get conversations started and figuring out [who you should be learning more about] out of hundreds of founders.

While there, Felicis randomly reached out to me through a friend of a friend, who said, ‘You should meet Sundeep,’ and they told Sundeep, ‘Sundeep, you should meet Niki,’ and though I hadn’t thought about venture, a lot of what they were doing really resonated with me. In many ways, I’m doing what I was doing at Summit, but with a much wider aperture.

TC: You were just promoted to partner from principal, up from senior associate, where you started in 2016. What does that mean on a practical level?

NP: A lot of the role won’t be much different than in the past year. I think from an external-facing perspective, it gives me more credibility with founders and investors. It’s one more thing that I can use to win great deals.

TC: What’s one competitive deal that you’ve won already?

NP: Modus in Seattle. It’s a [tech-driven] escrow startup that is to the title and brokerage industry what Compass is to real estate. I led the Series A deal for that company and I’m on the board and I got lot of credibility internally for that. I think they were thinking of promoting me next year or the year after, but they were like, ‘Dang, Niki just led a competitive Series A round. Let’s give him ammunition.’ [Laughs.]

TC: How did the deal come together, and what do you think won them over?

NP: I think three things: bonding with the founders, conviction about their company and speed. I’d heard that they were going to be in town for two weeks, fundraising, and I knew their goal was to leave the area with a term sheet. A lot of firms are fairly bureaucratic and it’s hard for them to spin up their team and do due diligence that quickly, but Felicis has a small team and I had conviction about the space already, so when they came through, I told them how excited I was to do something on their timeline.

We also bonded over [an up-and-coming] DJ. It’s also about creating that human connection with founders. I have a bunch of friends who are founders who say it often feels very transactional, their relationship with investors. You want to support these people.

TC: You don’t have tons of operating experience. You aren’t alone in this, but plenty of VCs will argue that to founders that it’s crucial. How do you counter this?

NP: Some founders do want more operational expertise, others don’t care that much unless the VC once ran a multibillion-dollar company. If you’re Martin Casado [of Andreessen Horowitz] and someone really loves Nicira, I’m probably not going to win against him.

But I’m relatively young compared with other partners, and I’m really passionate, and I think that comes across in the fundraising process. I think founders know that I will take a call any time, and help them build an amazing model for their business, and really help them prep for their next fundraising process, and help them with any VP recruits.

I’m still building my track record, so founders know that I care and that my incentives are aligned with theirs. If a founding team is successful, I’ll be successful versus someone who is already sitting on 15 boards and will show up once a quarter and try to own the room and who is less invested in whether or not the company does well because [that investor] has already been successful. I want every single portfolio company to do incredibly well. I want that to come across. And I think it does.

Where have all the seed deals gone? – gpgmail

When it comes to big business, the numbers rarely lie, and the ones PitchBook and other sources have pulled together on the state of seed investing aren’t pretty. The total number of seed deals, funds raised and dollars invested in seed deals were all down in the 2015-2018 time frame, a period too long to be considered a correctable glitch.

The number of seed deals, defined as U.S.-based deals under $1 million, dropped to 882 in Q4 2018 from 1,500 three years earlier, a 40% drop. The number of seed funds raised and the total dollars invested in seed rounds were both down roughly 30% over the same time period. And the trend isn’t limited to the U.S. — venture capital investment volume outside the U.S. dropped by more than 50% between 2014 and 2017.

The rise before the fall

To discover the reason behind the precipitous drop in seed deals requires a trip back in time to 2006, which was the start of a seed boom that saw investing rise 600% over a nine-year period to 2014. If you’re an internet historian, 2006 should ring a bell. It’s the year Amazon unveiled their Elastic Compute Cloud, or EC2, its revolutionary on-demand cloud computing platform that gave everyone from the government to your next-door neighbor a pay-as-you-go option for servers and storage.

Gone were the days of investing millions of dollars in tech infrastructure before writing the first line of code. At the same time, the proliferation of increasingly sophisticated and freely available open-source software provided many of the building blocks upon which to build a startup. And we can’t forget the launch of the iPhone in 2007 and, more importantly for startups, the App Store in 2008.

With the financial barrier to starting a business obliterated, and coupled with the launch of an entirely new and exciting mobile platform, Silicon Valley and other innovation hubs were suddenly booming with new businesses. Angel investors and dedicated seed funds quickly followed, providing capital to support this burgeoning ecosystem. As more capital became available, more companies were formed, leading to a positive reinforcing cycle.

Enter stagnation

But this cycle began to slow in 2015. Had investor optimism waned, or was the supply of founders dwindling? Had innovation simply stopped? To find the answer, it’s helpful to understand a key role of the traditional venture capitalist. Once the Series A round of financing closes, the lead investor will join the company’s board of directors to provide support and guidance as the company grows. This differs from the seed round of financing when investors typically do not join the board, if one exists at all. But even the most zealous and hardworking of VCs can only sit on so many boards and be fully engaged with each portfolio company.

An old-fashioned logjam

If you’ve ever ridden Splash Mountain at Disneyland, you’ve likely experienced a moment when the boats stack up due to a hiccup in the flow somewhere farther down the route. This is what happened with seed companies looking to raise a Series A round of financing in 2015.

Venture capital remains a hands-on business.

With venture investors limited by the number of board seats they could responsibly hold, a huge percentage of seed-stage companies failed to successfully raise more capital. Inevitably, many seed funds also felt this pain as their portfolios started to underperform. This led to tighter availability of capital, which led to a tougher fundraising environment for seed-stage companies. Series A investors could not absorb the giant wave of seed opportunities — the virtuous cycle had turned vicious.

The scaling of venture capital

In its simplest form, venture investing has three distinct phases: seed, venture and growth.

Because seed investors are not weighed down by the constraints of active board roles, they have the ability to build large portfolios of companies. In this sense, seed funds are more scalable than traditional early-stage venture funds.

At the other end of the spectrum, growth funds are able to scale their volume of dollars invested. With the average age of a company at IPO now being 12 years, companies are staying private longer than ever, which affords growth funds an opportunity to invest enormous amounts of capital and raise ever-larger funds.

It’s in the middle — traditional venture — where achieving scalability, by quantity of deals or dollars, is the most challenging. It was this inability to scale that led to the great winnowing of seed companies hoping to raise their Series A.

It’s a situation that is unlikely to change. Venture capital remains a hands-on business. The tight working relationship between investors and founders makes venture capital a unique asset class. This alchemy doesn’t scale.

The irony for traditional Series A venture investors is that the trait they find most desirable in a startup — scalability — is the one thing they themselves are unlikely to achieve.

Important Considerations When Buying A CPU

Before purchasing a processor, it’s imperative that you first research the parts performance and compatibility. In general the more cores and a higher clock speed a processor has the better it will perform, but this is far from the only important factors. For more information on how specific CPUs perform, I suggest you check out the PCMag’s processor reviews.

As for compatibility, is designed to fit inside of a specific socket and to work with specific motherboard chipsets. All modern Intel processors use the LGA1151 socket. If you are buying an 8000 or 9000 series processor, you will specifically want to purchase an LGA1151 socket motherboard with a 300-series chipset. LGA1151 socket motherboards that use the old 100 and 200 series chipsets were designed to work with Intel’s 6000 and 7000 series processors respectively and will not work with newer CPUs.

AMD customers will want to purchase a motherboard with an AM4 CPU socket. If you purchase an AMD Ryzen 1000-series processor, you will be able to use it with any 300 or 400 series chipset motherboards, but 1000-series processors are incompatible with AMD’s new X570 chipset. Similarly, you cannot use the new Ryzen 3000-series processors on any of the old 300-series chipsets. Instead, you will need to purchase either a 400 or 500 series chipset. Last but not least AMD’s Ryzen 2000-series processors are a bit easier to work with as they are compatible with all AM4 motherboards currently on the market regardless of which chipset is used.
