Ten minutes into my date with Taylor and I’ve spilled the champagne, smashed four glasses and slapped his cheek with uncooked lobster. The table is a blazing inferno (my attempt to light our votive candle was suboptimal). While I fumble with the fire extinguisher, Taylor stares at his phone, arms folded, and purses his lips. Moments like these transform Table Manners from a physics-based dating simulator into something approaching hilarious Mr Bean fan fiction.
Table Manners borrows the idea Bossa popularised with Surgeon Simulator by challenging players to complete a series of dexterous tasks via purposefully janky controls. Each level entails a visit to a series of increasingly whacky restaurants that play host to various romantic dates. Your partner makes demands – “Order us burgers … Refill my glass … Cook fondue” – and you have a limited time to realise their whims lest they slam down their fist and declare the date over.

It’s a fun premise, made sharper by a puckish commitment to a conceit that pokes fun at modern dating conventions. To embark on a date you must first take out your mobile phone, boot up an an app called Blundr then wipe your gammon-finger across the face of a prospective suitor. But under all the beards, piercings and makeup, every date (whether male or female) has the same base character model – and this standardisation is jarring. Similarly, you can flirt with your date through the app, but everyone has identical pre-generated chat options.
In any other game this could seem lazy, but in Table Manners the superficiality is satirical. There’s always another near-identical suitor to take your date’s place at the table. In Table Manners you repeat the same dates with different people – steak, sushi, burgers – while in real life many of us bookmark classy-but-not-too-pricey haunts to revisit with other “first dates”.
But there are frustrations. While Table Manners’ slapstick controls are part of what makes the chaos fun, sometimes they swing from deliberately awkward to accidentally broken. Unscripted bugs cause mayhem: a bucket of chips attached itself to my hand and smashed into anything I tried to delicately grasp; the blow torch refused to detect the food I was trying to toast; a glass got stuck halfway inside a table mat and prevented burgers being served; I had to restart the game twice after the pointer couldn’t detect “home” on the menu after completing levels.

Meanwhile, as the table settings grew more complex the challenges became unfairly obscure. In an ice bar Taylor insisted, “my glass is empty!” but when I filled the glass on his placemat, the task remained incomplete. As it turned out, a metal cup balanced on the opposite edge of the table should have been filled instead. Upon returning home from the unsuccessful date, I logged in to chat with some other matches on Blundr. The pre-generated chat served the same joke twice within 10 seconds to one suitor, but whereas she hated it the first time round, the second made her laugh.
There’s a fine line between playfully obtuse instructions and infuriatingly vague game design. Being unable to complete a task because it’s challenging is one thing, but not knowing exactly what the task is (and being blocked from doing it by bugs) is another. Table Manners has a brilliant premise and provides incisively funny commentary on modern romance but, just like when a Tinder date doesn’t match their profile and then proceeds to behave inexplicably, sometimes you just want to make your excuses and leave.

5 Ways Your Marketing Funnel Is Exactly Like Your Dating Life – Blog – 10 minute

Marketing, at its core, connects the brand and the customer. We meet the customer, get to know them, ask questions, and nurture the relationship forward. Doesn’t that sound a lot like dating? 
Our challenge is to develop the relationship forward, whether it’s through branding, content or any other part of the experience. The customer responses, at any touchpoint, determine where the customer is in our marketing funnel, where they are on their journey, and how we should approach them. 
Replace “marketing” with “dating” and “customer” with “date”, and the analogy is clear as daylight. It’s actually a really useful way to approach marketing. 
Want a solid relationship? You need your customers to be successful and become your raving fans – and for that to happen, you need to create exciting experiences and foster your relationships.
You don’t want to be pushy or clingy or irrelevant. If you are, you’ll lose them – your dropout rates will be huge and you’ll have to reevaluate your messaging or offering. 
Just as in marketing, love has five goals: attract, convert, nurture, close, retain. And for the love of your dating life, or your marketing funnel, follow them closely:
1. Awareness
You’ve just met. You have their attention. They grow familiar with your brand, but your intentions (or offering) aren’t just clear yet. It’s vital to share who you are and how you can help them solve their problems. It’s about them, not you. 
What to do (and to avoid): Use their favorite formats! Talk to them through blogs, social media, FAQs, or video tutorials. This isn’t the time for your sales pitch (i.e. the marriage proposal). Have some empathy and practice active listening. Focus on their needs, educate them, and establish trust. Your goal is to attract attention, spark interest and most of all, please, be authentic. Isn’t that the foundation for any relationship?
2. Consideration
Yes, we’re moving forward! Both parties are interested in developing the relationship. There’s a real sense of connection and meaning, and more personalized information is being exchanged. The more in-depth it is, the higher the chances of engagement. 
What to do (and to avoid): Stick to the formats that worked for them in the past: blog, respond to social media or emails, or why not offer them a free trial (no commitments yet)? Let them determine if the value is there. 
Get to know your prospects better. Avoid blanket approaches and personalize your messaging. You should already know what their pain points are, so offer exact solutions. And don’t leave them hanging; be timely with your responses if you’re serious about this.
3. Intent
We’re now beyond texting and phone conversations. You go to dinners, movies, concerts. Have you even Netflix and chilled already? OK, skip to the world of sales and marketing. At this point you’re doing demos, walkthroughs, offering e-guides, case studies, and giving them real thorough trials of whatever it is you’re selling. Show them your value; the Why and the How are paramount to this stage.
What to do (and to avoid): Yes, this may still seem more serious than it is, but the customer is truly evaluating if there’s a good match. Whatever doubts or objections there are, handle them quickly and effectively with a no-nonsense approach. They are interested but not yet 100% convinced. Find out what’s missing and fill the gap. 
4. Evaluation
Looks like you may have this wrapped up. This is the final chance to prove you’re a match. The customer may be weighing the pros and cons, pricing and longevity of the relationship. But you know what? They are probably doing the same with a competitor too. Help them choose you! Ask questions like: What do we need in order to make this the best decision for your business? How do we compare to the competition? How can we go the extra mile?
What to do (and to avoid): Encourage them to talk and to open up. What are they missing? What are the obstacles to their decision? But don’t forget that this all has to be done tastefully, ensuring the best experiences for the customer. If you’ve been honest, responsive, and helpful from the beginning, you will be the go-to person for questions when it’s decision time. 
5. Conversion
It’s decision time! Be 100% confident in the service you provide, ensure you’ve shared all the key information they need, and create the best possible scenario for them to choose you without obstacles. You can already start thinking about the bright future ahead. 
What to do (and to avoid): They know and trust you. Be persistent and confident, but not pushy, needy, or greedy. Remind them of your shared values, hint at the exciting future ahead, and highlight the benefits if needed – you got this! 
The Takeaway 
And now just as you finally wanted to take a break, the customer journey continues far beyond the sale. Always have your customer’s success as your top priority. Don’t contact them only when they’re up for renewal or when a new product is launched. Maintain the trust you’ve built. 
Have a customer nurturing strategy so you stay in regular contact. If you stay customer-focused, you’ll build brand advocates and let the good word spread further. 
Always impress with top-level service. And remember, they aren’t just buying solutions, they are buying experiences. The better experience you create, the longer and happier the relationship will be.

Facebook Dating postponed in Europe over GDPR compliance – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: It appears that Facebook will have to postpone the European launch of its dating service. Facebook Dating was set to go live in the EU on Thursday, the day before Valentines’s Day. However, regulators in Ireland showed it no love by pointing out that it had not filed the proper paperwork in time.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (IDPC) threw a wrench in the social media giant’s plans to import its Facebook Dating service to the European Union. The Wall Street Journal notes, the commission claims that it did not receive a data processing impact assessment (DPIA) until yesterday. A DPIA is required under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
After inspectors from the IDPC visited Facebook’s Dublin-based European headquarters last week, the company decided to put its plans on hold indefinitely. It notified Irish officials on Wednesday of the cancellation of the rollout. In a statement, Facebook said it wanted to be sure it was in compliance with the GDPR.

“We are taking a bit more time to make sure the product is ready for the European market. We have worked carefully to create strong privacy safeguards, and have shared this information with the IDPC ahead of the European rollout.”

The spokesperson also said the company had completed and submitted the DPIA. According to IDPC Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle, this paperwork was requested last week. Facebook turned in the assessment only a day before the intended launch, which is not enough time for review.
“We were very concerned that this was the first that we’d heard from Facebook Ireland about this new feature, considering that it was their intention to roll it out tomorrow, February 13th,” said Doyle.
Facebook initially announced plans for the dating service at its 2018 F8 developer conference. It launched last year in the US. People have also been finding love online in 19 other countries, including Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, and others.

Majority of Malware Attacks in Africa Come from False Dating Apps | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

With Valentine’s day around the corner and fast approaching, everyone is looking for love – instead, they may find an online virus that is stealing their money. Ain’t that a kick in the head?
Antivirus gurus Kaspersky say that while choosing the right partner for a romantic night out is of paramount importance, there is another matter that should be treated with care. Their analysis has shown that within 2019, the local region saw the circulation of 275 threats under the guise advertisements for over 20 popular dating apps in South Africa – with a total of 4,451 malware attacks coming from them. This is 58% of all attacks detected in all African regions (7,734).
Popular dating apps used internationally like Bumble, Zoosk and most importantly Tinder often become bait used to spread malware to mobile phones. Malware that is used to retrieve personal data to later bombard the users with unwanted ads or even spend their money on expensive paid subscriptions. These files and ads are not legitimate. They usually only use the name and design of popular apps to trick would-be victims.
Kaspersky notes that cybercriminals use Tinder the most as a cover for their malware. The app’s design and face were used in nearly a fifth of all cases.
The danger that these files bring varies and depends on the files themselves. Trojans hiding as “JOIN NOW” buttons can download other malicious files to your system, types of malware that send expensive SMSs from your phone to adware that bombards the user with annoying advertisements of things the user has no interest in.
For example, one notable application appears as Tinder at first glance, but is in fact, a banking Trojan that constantly requests Accessibility rights. When the rights are given the Trojan gives itself full access to the bank accounts of users, stealing their money.
On the internet, fake copies of apps like Tinder and Match.com are everywhere. Users are required to leave their personal information or connect to the disguised app through a social media account. The data will later be used or sold by cybercriminals, feeding on those simply looking for love.
“We advise users to stay attentive and use legal versions of applications that are available in official application stores,” says Vladimir Kuskov, head of advanced threat research and software classification at Kaspersky, “…and, of course, we wish you best of luck finding the perfect date for this special day.”
Kaspersky recommends a few ways to avoid cyber risks ahead of Valentine’s Day, here’s 4 of the most pertinent:
1. Always check application permissions to understand what an installed app is allowed to do.
2. Do not install applications from untrusted sources and use your smartphone’s settings to block any installations from unknown sources.
3. Find out more about the dating website you are about to visit before giving them any personal information – try to find user feedback and any sort of online trace or reputation.
4. Avoid sharing too much personal information with strangers online, and make sure the person you are chatting with is real and not a fraudster using a fake profile to scam you.

Facebook Dating launches in the U.S., adds Instagram integration – gpgmail


Are Americans ready to trust Facebook with their dating life? Barely more than a month has passed since the U.S. Federal Trade Commission fined Facebook a record $5 billion over its privacy lapses, and imposed a modified corporate structure to hold the company more accountable for its decisions over user privacy. In the wake of this historic action, Facebook’s brand-new dating product is today launching to all in the U.S., promising to leverage the company’s deep insight into people’s personal data to deliver better matches than rival dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, Match and others.

With its U.S. arrival, Facebook Dating will now also allow users to integrate their Instagram posts in their dating profile and add their Instagram followers to their “Secret Crush” list, in addition to Facebook friends.

By year-end, Facebook Dating users will be able to select which Facebook or Instagram Stories they want to add to their dating profile.

Trusting Facebook to find your match

Though the U.S. is the 20th market for Facebook Dating, it’s one of the most important for the product, which was first announced at the company’s F8 developer conference last year.

The new service represents a significant step toward making Facebook a tool for connecting with people who aren’t just friends or family.

This is an area where the company is now heavily invested. The Facebook Groups product, used by a billion people on a monthly basis, connects users by similar interests or by geographic location, as with its neighborhood groups. The company also launched Facebook at Work a few years ago to allow businesses to build their own networks on top of Facebook infrastructure.

Arguably, none of these efforts require as much trust as opening up your Facebook data — to a company known for its mishandling — in the hopes of finding love.

Facebook, well aware of the potential privacy pitfalls in such a product, has taken a number of steps to lock down the Facebook Dating experience so you’re not unwittingly outed to family or friends, or to work colleagues and other professional acquaintances. (Or, you know, to your spouse or significant other.)

For starters, the people you’re shown on Facebook Dating will not include your Facebook Friends. You can also opt to have Facebook Dating only show you those people where you don’t have any friends in common, for another layer of protection. And you can pre-emptively block people from seeing your profile on Facebook Dating — which may work well as a way to ensure an ex’s profile never, ever comes up and to make sure they never see yours.

And of course, Dating is an opt-in experience.

Your profile will never be visible to friends anywhere or to any people not on Facebook Dating, and it won’t appear in the News Feed. With the newly added Instagram integration, only your photos will be shown — not your Instagram handle.

However, there is still a way to add a Facebook friend as a “Secret Crush,” which will only be revealed if the interest is mutual. People are also limited to nine “crushes,” to prevent abuse of the feature. This now extends to Instagram followers, too, with the U.S. launch.

The product, which lives within the main Facebook app, also allows you to connect with people attending the same events or who participate in the same groups — though this is off by default and can be enabled on a one-by-one basis.

Beyond that, however, Facebook Dating will present you with a set of profiles based on other factors — mutual friends (if enabled), mutual groups (if enabled), mutual schools and other, unknown factors.

This is where things get tricky.

Facebook, of course, has been known to be eerily accurate with its friend recommendations — so much so that some people believed it had to have been spying on them. (As it turned out, Facebook did know more about who you were connecting with than people had realized.)

In terms of Facebook Dating’s recommendations, it’s unclear what “other” data, specifically, Facebook will be using.

Officially, Facebook says that match suggestions are based on “your preferences, interests, and other things you do on Facebook.”

Asked how exactly Facebook will rank its profile suggestions, Nathan Sharp, the Product Lead for Facebook Dating, said he can’t discuss the details of the system.

What I can say is that, in terms of privacy, none of the people you would see or encounter would be divulging any sort of information,” he explains. “So, if you and Taylor, for example, had gone to the same college, but you’d never posted that on your dating profile, you may be up-ranked. But Taylor would never see what college you went to and you would never see what college Taylor went to,” says Sharp. 

Sharp notes that people may discover their mutualities — like sharing the same alma mater, for instance — naturally, through conversations had within Facebook Dating chat.

Though it’s not unusual for a dating app maker to be tight-lipped about its secret sauce, the amount of data Facebook has to play with here is a competitive advantage and possibly a cause for concern as users are in control of what profile data Facebook is using behind-the-scenes.

On Tinder, you may write that you “love hiking,” but Facebook would know if you actually participated in hiking-related groups or events, and how often. It may know a lot more, too — like your check-ins to hiking trails, if there are mountains in your photos, if you posted updates with the keyword “hiking,” if you “Liked” Facebook Pages about hiking, etc. But Facebook won’t confirm if this sort of data is used or how.

If people can look past the uncertainty around Facebook’s use of their personal data — and that’s a huge unknown for the U.S. market — the product itself has several advantages.

Facebook Dating’s larger goal is to make matchmaking feel personal again. It aims to remind people there’s a real person behind these profiles. That dating is not meant to be a game. This could be a big differentiator from a market tired of but still committed to using dating apps.

The issue is that today’s dating apps aren’t incentivized to help people make long-lasting connections — after all, people who find a relationship abandon their dating service. That’s bad for the apps’ bottom line. What better, then, but to double down on the “single lifestyle,” as Tinder is now doing, to ensure users stick around?

Facebook, on the other hand, isn’t exactly worried about user churn. With the social network’s 2.4 billion monthly users, it has the bandwidth to make dating an additive feature. Its sheer numbers also mean the potential for a far larger pool of daters, including those who wouldn’t otherwise think to join a dating app.

Another advantage is that Facebook is a company that knows how to build a compelling user experience. It shines in the details on Facebook Dating — like how easily it flows you into a gender identification screen at setup, or how it gives you a way to quickly share your live location for first-date safety with a trusted friend on Messenger .

It’s cracking down on the sending of unsolicited photos and porn-bot spam that plague dating apps, by limiting chats to text and GIFs only. That means no links, photos, payments or videos can be shared in messages.

And when Story integration goes live by year-end, checking out daters’ less-polished updates may become a new favorite activity.

Finally, because its raison d’être is not (for now at least) direct monetization of core dating features — like messaging or returning to a profile you accidentally swiped past — Facebook can create a free product where you’re not limited by the app’s need to squeeze you for dollars.

In addition to the U.S., Facebook Dating is live already in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Guyana, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, Suriname, Thailand, Uruguay and Vietnam. It will be in Europe by early 2020. 

The company won’t say how many users are on the Dating product so far, but claims it’s “doing well.”

Facebook Dating is rolling out to users 18 and over in the U.S. starting today.

The League founder and CEO Amanda Bradford on modern dating, and whether Bumble is a ‘real’ startup – gpgmail


Welcome to this week’s transcribed edition of This is Your Life in Silicon Valley. We’re running an experiment for Extra Crunch members that puts This is Your Life in Silicon Valley in words – so you can read from wherever you are.

This is your Life in Silicon Valley was originally started by Sunil Rajaraman and Jascha Kaykas-Wolff in 2018. Rajaraman is a serial entrepreneur and writer (Co-Founded Scripted.com, and is currently an EIR at Foundation Capital), Kaykas-Wolff is the current CMO at Mozilla and ran marketing at BitTorrent.

Rajaraman and Kaykas-Wolff started the podcast after a series of blog posts that Sunil wrote for The Bold Italic went viral. The goal of the podcast is to cover issues at the intersection of technology and culture – sharing a different perspective of life in the Bay Area. Their guests include entrepreneurs like Sam Lessin, journalists like Kara Swisher and Mike Isaac, politicians like Mayor Libby Schaaf and local business owners like David White of Flour + Water.

This week’s edition of This is Your Life in Silicon Valley features Amanda Bradford – Founder/CEO of The League. Amanda talks about modern dating, its limitations, its flaws, why ‘The League’ will win. Amanda provides her candid perspective on other dating startups in a can’t-miss portion of the podcast.

Amanda talks about her days at Salesforce and how it influenced her decision to build a dating tech product that focused on data, and funnels. Amanda walks through her own process of finding her current boyfriend on ‘The League’ and how it came down to meeting more people. And that the flaw with most online dating is that people do not meet enough people due to filter bubbles, and lack of open criteria.

Amanda goes in on all of the popular dating sites, including Bumble and others, providing her take on what’s wrong with them. She even dishes on Raya and Tinder – sharing what she believes are how they should be perceived by prospective daters. The fast-response portion of this podcast where we ask Amanda about the various dating sites really raised some eyebrows and got some attention.

We ask Amanda about the incentives of online dating sites, and how in a way they are created to keep members online as long as possible. Amanda provides her perspective on how she addresses this inherent conflict at The League, and how many marriages have been shared among League members to date.

We ask Amanda about AR/VR dating and what the future will look like. Will people actually meet in person in the future? Will it be more like online worlds where we wear headsets and don’t actually interact face to face anymore? The answers may surprise you. We learn how this influences The League’s product roadmap.

The podcast eventually goes into dating stories from audience members – including some pretty wild online dating stories from people who are not as they seem. We picked two audience members at random to talk about their entertaining online dating stories and where they led. The second story really raised eyebrows and got into the notion that people go at great lengths to hide their real identities.

Kaykas-Wolff: Yeah, so the kind of backstory and what’s important for everybody that’s in the audience to know is that this podcast is not a pitch for a product, it’s not about a company, it’s about the Bay Area. And the Bay Area is kind of special, but it’s also a little bit fucked up. I think we all kind of understand that, being here.

So what we want to do in the podcast is talk to people who have a very special, unique relationship with the Bay Area, no matter creators that are company builders, that are awesome entrepreneurs, that are just really cool and interesting people, and today we are really, really lucky to have an absolutely amazing entrepreneur, and also pretty heavy hitter in the technology scene. In a very specific and very special category of technology that Sunil really, really likes. The world of dating.

Rajaraman: Yeah, so it’s funny, the backstory to this is, Jascha have both been married, what, long time-

Kaykas-Wolff: Long time.

Rajaraman: And we have this weird fascination with online dating because we see a lot of people going through it, and it’s a baffling world, and so I want to demystify it a bit with Amanda Bradford today, the founder CEO of The League.

Bradford: You guys are like all of the married people looking at the single people in the petri dishes.

Rajaraman: So, I’ve done the thing where we went through it with the single friends who have the app, swiping through on their behalf, so it’s sort of like a weird thing.

Group dating app 3fun exposed sensitive data on 1.5 million users – gpgmail


More than 1.5 million users of a group dating service had their personal data exposed — including their real-time location — because of a vulnerability in the app.

The app, 3fun, bills itself as a “private space” where you can meet “local kinky, open-minded people.” But the data wasn’t private at all. Ken Munro, founder of Pen Test Partners, which published the research Thursday and shared its findings with gpgmail, said it was “probably the worst security for any dating app we’ve ever seen.”

Pen Test Partners researchers found the app was leaking the precise location, photos and other personal details of any nearby user.

Worse, because the app wasn’t properly secured, the researchers found they could plug in any coordinates they wanted to spoof their location, revealing sensitive information on anyone within any location of their choosing, including government buildings, military bases, and even intelligence agencies.

gpgmail ran the same tests as Pen Test Partners and confirmed its findings. We were able to modify our current geolocation to any set of coordinates we wanted — including the White House and the CIA.

Using a man-in-the-middle tool like Burp Suite, we could capture our real location, manipulate it in transit on the way to the server, and receive a batch of data for that location.

We found profiles of users at both locations, including their sexual preferences — including sexual orientation and their preferred matches; their age; username and their partner’s username; their bio — many of which included expansive, specific and personal information on the user; and their full-resolution profile picture. In some cases, dates of birth were also exposed.

None of the data was encrypted. The researchers called the app a “privacy train wreck.”

The researchers contacted 3fun on July 1 to report the bugs. Munro said the app maker took weeks to fix the issues.

We emailed 3fun with several questions, but spokesperson Jennifer White did not respond to a request for comment.

It’s the latest app to fall foul of proper security standards in recent months. Jewish dating app JCrush left 200,000 user records exposed in June following a security lapse. Last year on its launch day, conservative dating app Donald Daters exposed its entire user base — at the time some 1,600 users — after leaving a set of hardcoded keys in its app, which was quickly found after a security researcher decompiled the app.

Another dating app, Coffee Meets Bagel, was breached on Valentine’s Day, no less.

Well, that’s one way to a person’s heart — hacking their dating profile.
