Check out this convincing deepfake of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk in Star Trek – Blog – 10 minute

In context: It’s no secret that deepfakes have been getting better in recent times, especially when it comes to placing people into movies and TV shows. The latest example sees Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and Tesla CEO Elon Musk dropped into the pilot episode of the original Star Trek, and it’s quite an eye-opener.
Deepfakes, for those unfamiliar with the term, is the manipulation of images and videos using machine learning, usually involving the superimposing of a person’s face over the source material. When it first came to light, it was quite easy to spot a doctored video—but the quality is improving.
In the clip, Bezos plays a Talosian alien. Its big, bald head likely made it easier to insert the Amazon CEO. We also see Musk as Captain Christopher Pike, captain of the USS Enterprise before Kirk. There are several characters involved in the scene, but they’ve been cut out, which is why the conversation seems a bit bizarre.

An equally impressive recent deepfake saw an altered version of 80s classic Back to the Future. In it, Spider-Man Tom Holland is pasted into the Michael J. Fox role, while Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. takes over from Christopher Lloyd.
While these clips are fun, there’s concern that deepfakes could be used to put words into the mouths of public figures, thereby spreading false news or worse. It’s also been used to place the faces of Hollywood actresses onto porn stars in adult movies—something that’s been classed as nonconsensual content.
A deepfakes pioneer last September said we were six months away from “perfectly real” videos, and it looks as if he might be right.

(naturally not considering people whom you already know )… yes they are still ‘connections’ until you acknowledge affection or love and other emotions towards them. With the proliferation of online tools and platforms, the online community circle of people has also increased. To loosely define, connections with whom your relationship is purely on the tool or platform. It started there and remains like that. Some chats, likes, emojis, comments here and there. Nothing beyond that.
Valentine’s Day is an apt moment, to express and manifest the online relationship and take it to the next level. Gifting can be the way to show that your mindspace also has a small real estate for them. But online relationships has a trust factor involved and sending a gift requires a physical address to be shared, which people would be hesitant to share. Dead end. No. There is a platform available, which can allow you generate a virtual postal address and invite your connections to send you gifts.
Hide n Gift generates a six digit virtual postal address after having entered your physical address. Then, it creates a link, which can be posted on social platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. The people who would like to send the gift to you can click on the link and select from the gift shop that opens up and send the gift. The payment can be done online and the gift gets delivered through courier. The parcel will only have the name of the sender without any information whatsoever. Even the courier company has no information about the sender.
There are a host of options available to express your love. From a thirty rupee kit-kat to an expensive gift-pack. “To start with, we have a gift list of small ticket size items – chocolates, gift packs, etc but we expect the volumes to be higher. Valentine’s Day is one such opportunity for people to express their love,” says Anand Muthiah, Founder, Hide N Gift.
The registrations and volumes have shot up in the last couple of days because of Valentine’s Day. In an interesting instance of people showing their gratitude towards old age citizens. A junior colleague gifted his senior colleague with a fruit and nut chocolate and she got elated and shared it as a testimonial. Small moments of love.
Anonymous gifting is a new space. There are many options available to gift known people but there are hardly any avenues to gift online associations. Amazon Wishlist being one exception, where people who want to receive gifts can select the products and Amazon will package them in a link, which can be posted on social media platforms by the wishlist creator. People who are interested in gifting will buy those gifts from Amazon and send it to the person.
So when you send gifts to your ‘connections’, they are no longer connections but ‘associations’.

Check out the world’s largest firework lighting up the sky – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? Think you’ve seen some big fireworks? They’re nothing compared to the one launched in Colorado last Saturday night, which has been verified as the largest ever aerial firework. Weighing 2,797 pounds, its explosion briefly lit up the night sky.
The massive firework was set off at Colorado’s Steamboat Springs annual winter festival. The 62-inch shell was launched from a 26-foot long motor that sat on top of Howelsen Hill, launching at 300mph and flying nearly a mile into the sky before bursting.
The firework was developed over the course of seven years by a team headed by Tim Borden of Steamboat Springs. Borden had attempted to break the record before, back on February 10, 2019, but that 2,500-pound shell exploded inside the mortar.
The firework breaks the previous record by 400 pounds. The former holder weighed 2,397 pounds and was launched in the United Arab Emirates on January 1, 2018.

Christina Conlon from the Guinness Book of Records verified that the shell was the world’s largest. She presented a certificate to Borden and his team, praising them for their achievement after last year’s failure.
“We invested hundreds of hours into this project, and we anticipate that we will enjoy the satisfaction of this success for months to come,” Borden said. “People are already asking us, ‘What’s next?’ I really can’t answer that question, other than to say, whatever it is, I hope to do it with this same bunch of guys.”
The record-setting launch wasn’t without its problems. The Steamboat Pilot & Today reports that a winter storm dumped more than two feet of snow on the mortar and meant transporting the shell required extensive machine work.

Check out this $5,000+ iPhone 11 Pro inspired by Tesla’s Cybertruck – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Don’t have between $39,900 and $69,900 to buy one of Tesla’s Cybertrucks? Then you could always get a modded iPhone from Russia’s Caviar, which has a design inspired by the boxy vehicle.
The Cyberphone, as it’s called, is essentially just an iPhone 11 Pro inside a titanium protective case. Caviar says that “the design of the body is inspired by the geometry of Tesla’s Cybertruck. At the same time, it is improved aesthetically.”

The Cyberphone features a screen cover that doubles as a kickstand, allowing it to be stood up vertically. While the cover might feel a little bulky in your pocket, it appears to offer plenty of protection for the device inside.

Caviar has come up with plenty of unusual and expensive takes on popular devices in the past. There was its $4,300 iPhone X Tesla featuring an attached solar charger, $720 gold-plated AirPods, and a $24,000 jewelry-encrusted iPhone Xs. It’s also produced a $3,000 Apple Watch that pays homage to Vladimir Putin, a $4,300 iPhone 5S engraved with Putin’s face, and a $2,500 Nokia commemorating the Russian President’s meeting with Donald Trump.
As with Caviar’s other products, the Cyberphone isn’t cheap. It starts at $5,990 for a 64GB iPhone 11 Pro and goes up to $13,590 for an iPhone 11 Pro Max. There are also ‘Light’ versions that range from $4,260 to $11,860. Only 99 Cyberphones will be made, and at the time of writing, there are 23 units left.

Farmers crack whip on data rights in agtech reality check – Strategy – Networking – Software – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Australian farmers are renown cutting through the crap routinely delivered by big corporates and politicians seeking to look closer to the land.
So it was only ever really a matter of time before the public relations props of agtech and blockchain felt the sharp sting of reality from the rural stock whip.
So it was this week, when the Tempemail Farmers Federation bowled up its extensive and plain English take on all things agtech, X-tech, telco and blockchain to Canberra, tipping a bucket on all the giddy talk of IoT powered farms, supply chain transformation and robots in the fields.
There is plenty of innovation happening in the ag sector, the peak body for farmers duly notes, but there’s also quite a few annoying tech issues getting in the way; and a tendency for the tech sector to try and tell people on the land how to run their farms with gadgets when more basic fixes are needed.
Like broadband, which the NFF notes could be a lot better in its submission to the Senate Select Committee on Financial Technology and Regulatory Technology, especially if the raft of tech pilots and prototypes are ever to make it into everyday use.
“Future applications will further encompass data-driven technologies that employ automation and robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning and satellite and remote sensing capabilities,” the NFF said in its submission.
“The nature of the broadband connectivity options available (including coverage, speed, price, capacity and latency) is an important factor in technology uptake, and the poor quality of services in areas of regional Australia is a major factor restricting uptake.”
The issues of bush broadband, or lack thereof, is of course well-documented and has for decades been the subject of direct government regulatory interventions such as the Universal Service Obligation to stop telcos deserting or price gouging regional areas.
Even when there is access, farmers note that a fair bit of the agtech pushed in their direction doesn’t really pass muster on the usefulness front.
“Producers perceive the value propositions of agtech products and services to be weak. This issue is compounded by a lack of interoperability between products – i.e. farmers are unwilling to pay for a tool that isn’t compatible with the machinery / software / other tech that they already use or might purchase,” the NFF paper notes.
“Technologies are being pushed into the industry by entrepreneurs who do not understand the complexities of farming, rather than pulled into agriculture by producers who see value to be gained from adopting agtech solutions.”
Farmers are also justifiably wary of just giving up their data or being locked into platforms on promises of great things to come.
With agricultural data being a prized asset in terms of trading and pricing on commodities markets for centuries, farmers want to know who is getting what when they plug into new systems.
“Concerns about data privacy and ownership, and how farm data is used by agtech providers, undermines trust and can limit uptake. In addition to these cross-cutting barriers, there are specific issues preventing uptake of individual technologies.”
On that front blockchain gets a special mention, not so much for its immutable utility but for its power bill, which is pretty steep.
“Research has found that key limitations to the widespread uptake of commercial blockchain applications in agriculture include high energy requirements to fuel processing power,” the NFF paper says.
The paper also singles out the “availability of mechanisms, such as sensors and automated data capture, to capture error-free data” noting that adoption “may require an investment in additional, accurate data collection, and the returns on this investment are not yet assured.”
“There is a significant and increasing amount of data collected on-farm and through the supply chain, and while the potential benefits and value of using this data are considerable, the tension between those who provide the data (farmers) and those who collect and have rights to the use of the data (agribusinesses and third parties) is a major hurdle to realising those benefits,” the NFF paper says.
Farmers also want a say on how data reaped from the land is used, going as far to push a regulatory code back to industry, with the NFF developing “a voluntary Farm Data Code of Practice, to provide assurance to farmers around how their data will be used and that the value coming from that data will flow back to farmers.”
You don’t hear about that one in too many IoT case studies.

No immunity from cyber attacks, shows Check Point Research‘s cyber security report- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Check Point Research, the Threat Intelligence arm of Check Point Software Technologies has published its 2020 Cyber Security Report. The Report highlights the main tactics cyber-criminals are using to attack organizations worldwide across all industries, and gives cyber security professionals and C-Level executives the information they need to protect their organizations from today’s fifth-generation cyber-attacks and threats.
The 2020 Security Report reveals the key attack vectors and techniques observed by Check Point researchers during the past year. Highlights include:
Cryptominers still dominate malware landscape – Even though cryptomining declined during 2019, linked to cryptocurrencies’ fall in value and the closure of the Coinhive operation in March, 38% of companies globally were impacted by crypto-miners in 2019, up from 37% in 2018. This is because the use of crypto-miners remains a low-risk, high-reward activity for criminals

Botnet armies surge in size – 28% of organizations globally were hit by botnet activity, an increase of over 50% compared with 2018. Emotet was the most common bot malware used, primarily because of its versatility in enabling malware and spam distribution services. Other botnet actions such as sextortion email activity and DDoS attacks also rose sharply in 2019.
Targeted ransomware hits hard – While the number of impacted organizations is relatively low, the severity of the attack is much higher – as seen in 2019’s damaging attacks against U.S. city administrations. Criminals are choosing their ransomware targets carefully, with the aim of extorting the maximum revenue possible.
Mobile attacks decline – 27% of organizations worldwide were impacted by cyber-attacks that involved mobile devices in 2019, down from 33% in 2018. While the mobile threat landscape is maturing, organizations are also increasingly aware of the threat, and are deploying more protection on mobiles
The year Magecart attacks became an epidemic – These attacks which inject malicious code into e-commerce websites to steal customers’ payment data hit hundreds of sites in 2019, from hotel chains to from commerce giants to SMBs, across all platforms.
Rise in cloud attacks – Currently more than 90% of enterprises use cloud services and yet 67% of security teams complain about the lack of visibility into their cloud infrastructure, security, and compliance. The magnitude of cloud attacks and breaches has continued to grow in 2019. Misconfiguration of cloud resources is still the number one cause for cloud attacks, but now we also witness an increasing number of attacks aimed directly at cloud service providers.

“2019 presented a complex threat landscape where nation states, cybercrime organizations and private contractors accelerated the cyber arms race, elevating each other’s capabilities at an alarming pace, and this will continue into 2020,” said Lotem Finkelsteen, Threat Intelligence Group Manager, Check Point Software Technologies.
He added, “Even if an organization is equipped with the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art security products, the risk of being breached cannot be completely eliminated. Beyond detection and remediation, organizations need to adopt a proactive plan to stay ahead of cybercriminals and prevent attacks. Detecting and automatically blocking the attack at an early stage can prevent damage. Check Point’s 2020 Security Report shares what organizations need to look out for, and how they can win the war against cyber attacks through key best practices.”
