Sydney Uni’s Brain and Mind Centre scores $7m for AI projects – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Two multidisciplinary projects at the University of Sydney are set to share in over $7 million to develop technologies for mental health and neurological disorders using artificial intelligence.
The two projects from the university’s Brain and Mind Centre received the funding as part of the federal government’s Medical Research Future Fund.
A shade over $4 million will go towards a project led by professor of neurology Michael Barnett and the the Sydney Neuroimaging Analysis Centre (SNAC).
They will investigate how AI can be combined with medical imaging technologies to improve diagnoses, monitoring and treatment of diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS).
Known as the Translating AI Networks to Support Clinical Excellence in Neuro Diseases (TRANSCEND) project, the researchers are attempting to build a new AI learning ecosystem by training the AI to recognise biomarkers linked to the progression of MS.
Barnett said TRANSCEND fills an important gap in the research of AI technologies in the health sector.
“Software-generated ‘artificial neural networks’ have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for (generic) image recognition,” Barnett said in a statement.
“Despite the clear potential for this technology to transform health delivery, particularly through advances in medical imaging, AI research and implementation has remained the purview of research institutes and technology companies with limited access to real-world data.”
“By incorporating real-world data, TRANSCEND will enable new AI research and technologies within the health sector, while preserving patient privacy and data security.”
Meanwhile, $3.1 million was allocated to a project led by post-doctoral research fellow Frank Iorfino to test and quantify the impacts of youth mental health interventions using AI.
This study brings together data and computer scientists who will work with clinicians and health services to develop digital tools that can help inform clinical decisions about which interventions and treatments are best suited to young people looking for mental health care.
Iorfino said the research is vital given mental disorders are a leading cause of disability and death among young people.
“A key challenge for youth mental health care is how to make effective clinical decisions about the timing and sequence of interventions, particularly for those with complex needs.
“This three-year project will use AI to model youth mental health outcomes and quantify the impact of interventions on these outcomes.”
Professor Ian Hickie, Brain and Mind Centre co-director of youth mental health and policy, said that the new approaches could result in real-time decision aids that can help clinicians make better choices about which early interventions will be of the most benefit to young people with emerging mood and psychotic disorders.

Data centre chip sales unlikely to cover for smartphone weakness – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

At Samsung Electronics, demand for its chips from data centres bulking up to meet a surge in work-from-home traffic was not likely enough to offset muted sales of its smartphones in the second quarter, analysts said.
The world’s biggest supplier of DRAM and NAND memory chips on Tuesday will announce preliminary April-June revenue as well as operating profit, which it previously expected to show a decline.
Profit likely fell 4.5 percent to 6.3 trillion won (A$7.54 billion) from the same period year earlier, according to Refinitiv SmartEstimate, which is weighted towards the more consistently accurate analysts.
Work-from-home orders and growth in online learning is underpinning chip demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting US DRAM supplier Micron Technology to forecast strong quarterly revenue last month.
Chips bring in roughly half of Samsung’s profit. The rest is mainly smartphones, of which the South Korean firm is the world’s largest maker.
“With improved demand, a spike in DRAM prices helped Samsung continue with a solid performance in the second quarter,” said analyst Park Sung-soon at Cape Investment & Securities.
Those price increases were likely driven by data centres stockpiling chips and so are unlikely to continue, analysts said.
Though DRAM prices jumped 14 percent in the quarter, they were flat in June versus May, showed data from DRAMeXchange.
“Until uncertainty stemming from the pandemic goes away, the sector’s outlook isn’t too positive,” said CW Chung, Nomura head of research in Korea.
In smartphones, Hyundai Motor Securities estimated Samsung’s operating profit fell 16% in April-June.
Gadget sales have fallen along with discretionary spending during the pandemic. Samsung’s smartphone shipments hit a low in April and is likely to take time to recover, analysts said.
Samsung’s display business – whose customers include Apple and Huawei Technologies – is likely to post a second consecutive quarter of loss, analysts said.
The firm will likely release detailed earnings figures later this month.

All hail Macbath! Australia’s Ramsay Centre introduces world to new Shakespeare play | Australia news- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

By any standards, it was a tweet with a few too many errors. By the standards of a multi-million dollar education centre devoted to western civilisation and which partners with universities to fund its own degrees, it was probably better off deleted.
On Thursday, Australia’s Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation stunned its followers on Twitter by introducing them to the little-known Shakespeare play “Macbath”.
In an error-riddled, and now-deleted tweet, the centre devoted to the Western canon misspelled “tragedies” and “Macbeth” itself, and referred to the infamous “Scottish Play” as a “book”. “Instalment” was also written using the US spelling of the word: “installment”.
“We’re excited to present the fifth installment [sic] of our Great Books of the Western Canon Video Series,” it said. “In this most recent video of the series, the discussion focuses on Shakespeare’s Macbath [sic], one of Shakespeare’s great tradegies [sic].”
The Ramsay Centre is a philanthropic body set up to “to advance education by promoting studies and discussion associated with the establishment and development of western civilisation”.
Currently, it funds degrees in Western civilisation at both the University of Queensland and University of Wollongong, and has signed an agreement with the Australian Catholic University.
At the University of Wollongong, less than 40 students are studying the Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation, 30 of whom have been given a $30,000 scholarship from the Ramsay Centre.
The centre has given the university $50m to fund the course itself.
Its degrees were criticised by academics from the University of Sydney for teaching content already taught in existing arts and humanities degrees, but with “the institutionalisation of ideas…that strengthen racism and European supremacism intellectually and politically” and “the superiority of a monoculture”.
On Twitter, users poked fun at the unfortunate irony of a centre for Western civilisation misspelling “Macbeth”.

Don’t they know that it is terribly bad luck to call it “Macbath”? For safety, it should be referred to as “The Scottish Plug” https://t.co/h7rVErBsgb
— Angus M-a-c-i-n-n-i-s (@AequoEtBono) July 1, 2020

The official Ramsay Centre account soon apologised and thanked people for pointing out the errors. It blamed “autocorrect” for the error.
“The joys of smartphones, auto correct, and working from home,” it said. “Rest assured, tweets are not great books. If only Shakespeare was here with a twitter account”.
The account then deleted and reposted the original tweet. However, the second attempt still spelt “Macbeth” as “Macbath”.

The Ramsay Centre just deleted their tweet and reposted a “corrected” version. Which they’ve now also deleted. pic.twitter.com/fuXhJ7sFJ6
— Margaret Morgan ✒📚 🎬 (@Monocotyledon) July 2, 2020

All three tweets were then deleted.
As former BuzzFeed News and ABC journalist Cameron Wilson pointed out, “autocorrect absolutely doesn’t put typos into words”.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, students at the University of Wollongong’s Ramsay Centre course are told in week two to “discuss the controversy surrounding their own course, and debate whether it is appropriate to study Western civilisation at all”.
Director of the program, Prof Daniel Hutto said the course would teach students critical learning through the Socratic method.
“You wind up in a puzzle,” he told the Herald in March. “You learn that you didn’t know as much about the topic as you thought you did in the beginning.”

Amazon to build first robotic Australian fulfilment centre in Sydney – Strategy – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon will build its first robotic Australian fulfilment centre in Sydney’s west in a bid to accelerate order processing times and improve the e-tailer’s competitiveness.
The company announced plans for the massive 200,000 square metre facility on Tuesday, which will also be its largest in Australia with “around the same land size as Taronga Zoo”.
The centre, to be located near the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, is expected to create 1500 permanent jobs when completed in late 2021, as well as a further 700 jobs during construction.
It will be the company’s second centre in Western Sydney, allowing it to increase its “capacity to fulfil customers orders”.
Amazon said the fulfilment centre will be “equipped with the most advanced Amazon Robotics technology”, allowing it to operate 24/7 and store “50 percent more items per square metre”.
The robots will be used to accelerate order processing times by “moving shelves to employees” to reduce how long it takes staff to pick “up to 11 million items” for customer orders.
Amazon Australia operations director Craig Fuller said the centre will more than double the company’s operational footprint in Australia, while improving efficiency for staff and customers.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the “construction and operation of this centre will deliver far-reaching benefits for the people and businesses of NSW”.
“With the ability to operate 24/7, the almost 200,000 square metre facility is expected to be the largest ‘fulfilment centre’ built in Australia,” she said.
“It will also be its most advanced, incorporating the company’s latest robotics systems, the first time these will have been deployed in the Southern Hemisphere.”
Amazon currently operates more than 50 robotic fulfillment centres around the world.

WA Police CISO named first Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre CEO – Strategy – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

WA Police’s first-ever chief information security officer Hai Tran will leave the force after almost five years to become the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre’s inaugural CEO.
South Australian Premier Steven Marshall and Minister for Innovation and Skills, David Pisoni, announced Tran’s appointment on Monday ahead of the centre’s official launch next month.
The centre, backed by a $8.9 million investment from the state government, will support startups and other businesses to launch new cyber products and services.
Located at Adelaide’s Lot Fourteen innovation precinct, the centre – or A3C – will include a training academy and cyber testing range to test solutions in a secure environment.
Tran, who will take up the role on Wednesday, comes to the centre with 15 years experience in IT, risk management and governance from the private and public sectors.
Before joining WA Police in August 2015, he spent three years as the head of the Australian arm of Coptercam and four years as the CISO at Curtin University of Technology.
He also previously worked at the federal Department of Finance, Macquarie Telecom, and security services company CyberTrust.
Tran will lead the centre alongside its board, which includes AustCyber chief Michelle Price and CyberCX chief strategy officer and former national cyber security advisor Alastair MacGibbon.
Marshall said Tran, along with the “highly credentialled board”, will “bring together industry, education and research institutes and entrepreneurs from around the world to collaborate”.
“South Australia is now driving the growth of Australia’s cyber industry, creating high-tech jobs and generating significant interest from interstate and overseas,” he said in a statement.
He said the centre was particularly important following COVID-19, which has created further awareness of cyber security and resilience for the business community.
A3C chairman Kim Scott said the centre would “use local cyber capability wherever possible”, as well as seek out capability from internationally recognised organisations where “gaps” exist.
On LinkedIn, Tran said he was “sad to leave [the] WA Police Force after five years” and paid tribute to his former colleagues.
“It was highly satisfying to contribute to the community of WA. I wish to thank my former team for their support and outstanding achievements.”
A3C has been established in collaboration with industry, including BAE Systems, Optus and Dtex Systems, as well as academia and government.

How Businesses Can Think Human and Place People at Centre of IT Decisions | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from TTEC.com

Organisations are placing business and shareholder goals above employee needs when adopting new technologies, according to a new study from Lenovo. The research, conducted among 1,000 IT managers across EMEA, found that just 6% of IT managers consider users as their top priority when making technology investments.
Lenovo believes that this approach to IT adoption is ultimately leading to productivity being stifled.
When businesses implement new technologies without considering the human impact, many employees become overwhelmed due to the complexity and pace of change, with 47% of IT managers reporting that users struggle to embrace new software.
With all industries having to adapt to the ‘next normal’ and take stock of their responsibility – to employees, to the environment and to the wider world – Lenovo encourages businesses to place the needs of their people at the heart of IT decisions.
Untapped potential
There is an understandable desire for businesses to embrace transformational technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things, as soon as possible. The benefits these promise – innovation, improved productivity, reducing cost and greater customer experience most importantly – are tantalising for any organisation, but their true potential is completely untapped if adoption is purely led by business goals.
While successfully implemented technology should act as an enabler for employees and businesses to achieve greater things, a poor strategy can see technology become an inhibitor – hampering users whose needs have not been carefully considered and catered for. Almost half (48%) of respondents reported a negative outcome where technology implementations have actively inhibited their teams’ ability to operate.
Businesses need to focus on people, offering everything from comprehensive training, to change management, while ensuring leadership KPIs, robust policy & strategy and thorough rollout analyses are aligned with a people-first ethos.
Businesses should also ask people-centric questions during any adoption process – is this technology intuitive, will it solve rather than create challenges for employees, will users get a good experience. By taking these steps, businesses can realise the benefits new tools promise, seeing greater productivity and driving innovation. In fact, 52% of IT managers are optimistic about emerging tech’s ability to deliver improved productivity.
However, with 21% of users reporting new technology has actually slowed down processes, it is imperative for businesses to embrace the right technology at the right time. It’s also vitally important businesses consider everyone in the organisation – from those who use it every day to the IT teams implementing it, to the boardroom decision-makers.
The goal should be to adopt smarter technology that is always connected, seamless, agile, flexible, easy to collaborate, adaptive to needs, reliable, high performance and with enhanced security and privacy. Not only that, but it should be suited to the needs of everyone in an organisation.
Responsible business in the ‘next normal’
Organisations are currently re-evaluating how they operate in order to thrive in the next normal. Being a responsible business must now be a priority – placing human impact on the same level as achieving business goals. With 62% of IT managers reporting their investment decisions are entirely business-centric, it will require a fundamental mindset shift for many businesses.
However, as flexible working policies are embraced in order to provide more support to employees during the COVID-19 outbreak, a people-first approach is beginning to emerge, with 70% of respondents seeing more emphasis within their organisation on responsible business.
“Times are changing rapidly, not only for businesses but the technology industry as a whole. Stripped of office walls, we are seeing organisations place greater emphasis on the wellbeing of their employees, and it’s heartening to see this shift in priorities from being all about the bottom line. But the study shows that this is only the beginning,” says Giovanni Di Filippo, President of Lenovo’s Data Centre Group for the EMEA.
“If there is a change of heart and mind within the industry, taking a people-first approach to IT adoption, we will see positive change for both organisations and wider society. Happier employees, greater productivity and a faster pace of innovation – these are the benefits of placing people at the centre of IT decisions.”
Time to think human
IT vendors whose portfolio can empower businesses to think human will help employees embrace change and enable them to be more productive. Such vendors do this by having an open mindset in working with other organisations, thinking about customer outcomes, not just adoption, reducing the burden on customers as well as the IT department and by helping put usability and experience first.
Di Filippo says that “for too long IT decisions have placed pure cost above a business’s most valuable asset: people. It’s people that change the world, and we know that data and technology cannot be transformative without humans bringing it to life and giving it purpose.”
“We want businesses to think human by investing in ‘Smarter Technology for All’. As for vendors – it’s time to think beyond what they make and consider who they make it for. If people are put first, we know the benefits and desired company outcomes will be great.”

Data centre chip startup Ampere to release more powerful processor – Hardware- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Ampere, the data centre chip startup led by former Intel executives and backed by Oracle, on Tuesday announced a more powerful processor in its efforts to court cloud computing customers.
The Santa Clara, California-based company said its new chip, the Altra Max, will have 128 computing cores, up from the 80 of its predecessor the company announced in March.
The new chip will start shipping to some customers in the fourth quarter, with higher volumes expected by the middle of next year.
Ampere said the extra cores are important for additional security when chips are used in cloud computing data centers.
Ampere is trying to challenge Intel and Advanced Micro Devices by targeting cloud customers such as Microsoft, which is testing its chips, and Oracle, which has signed on as a customer in addition to being an investor.
Ampere also said it has produced test chips using a new 5-nanometer semiconductor fabrication process at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), which makes its chips, for processors that will be released in 2022.
TSMC has said it wants to build a US$12 billion 5-nanometer chip fab in Arizona that could come online in 2024.
Jeff Wittich, Ampere’s senior vice president of products, said Ampere’s future chips could be made there if its customers wanted.
“As long as (TSMC) follow their standard practices, and industry standard practices, there’s nothing that would prevent us from running on 5-nanometer in an Arizona fab rather than a Taiwan fab,” he said in an interview.

NSW govt sets up vulnerability tracking centre in Bathurst – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The NSW government has set up a cyber security vulnerability management centre in Bathurst, which will start operating next month.
The centre will be operated by Cyber Security NSW, the new name given to what was formerly the Office of the Government Chief Information Security Office.
It will provide the NSW government with an increased awareness of vulnerabilities in internet-facing services and assets,” Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello said in a statement.
“It will deliver a vital, sector-wide risk management capability and is critical to ensuring enhanced monitoring of at-risk government systems, as well as early identification and remediation of known vulnerabilities.
“Early detection of vulnerabilities and the ability to report them to the relevant agencies and departments is essential to improving our cyber security.”
The government added that the centre “will provide ongoing and automated vulnerability scanning across departments and agencies, and as capability develops, other services will be introduced.”
The centre is the first of its kind in NSW and will employ eight Bathurst-based cyber security staff.
It will also see Cyber Security NSW work in partnership with UpGuard “to provide the NSW Government with greater capabilities to detect and manage internet-facing vulnerabilities and data breaches.”
The centre’s establishment comes as the NSW government prepares to invest $240 million into cyber security over the next three years.
It also comes as news reports emerge of the state government being a major target of a potentially state-based attack.

NSW govt data centre goes down after power outage – Strategy – Storage – Networking- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A number of NSW Health and Service NSW systems are offline after the state government’s Silverwater data centre suffered a power failure overnight.
Reports of issues with NSW Health systems, including the state’s electronic medical record and other corporate applications, emerged this morning.
The health.nsw.gov.au website has also been down all morning. It currently returns the message “cannot connect to the configuration database”.
After enquiries to NSW Health’s digital arm, eHealth NSW, a spokesperson for the Department of Customer Service told iTnews the outage had been caused by a power issue.
“The NSW Government data centre at Silverwater experienced a power issue at 4am this morning,” the spokesperson said.
“This has impacted a number of government systems across the State this morning, in particular NSW Health and Service NSW.”
While technical staff are still investigating the cause of the outage, the spokesperson appeared to rule out a cyber attack.
“Technical staff have been working to urgently bring systems back on line and are investigating the cause,” the spokesperson said.
“It is not believed to be a cyber security incident.”
The spokesperson said while NSW Health had executed business continuity processes, “no patient data is affected by the outage and patient safety is unaffected while systems are rebooted”.
“Service NSW customers should expect some delays to a number of services,” the spokesperson said.
The outage comes days after a system outage at Transport for NSW that was reportedly due to a “malicious hack”.
Separately, The Sydney Morning Herald also reported that a series of cyber attacks against the NSW government and critical infrastructure providers prompted Prime Minister Scott Morrision’s cyber attack warning last week.
More to come.

Little Orpheus review – madcap adventure to the centre of the Earth | Games – Blog – 10 minute

Following a diminutive cosmonaut on an unexpected journey to the centre of the Earth, Little Orpheus is a madcap Soviet adventure story with the panache of a great Saturday-morning cartoon from the 80s. By swiping and tapping the screen, you guide little Ivan Ivanovich through a secret underground kingdom of lush jungles, forgotten cities and intimidating megafauna, listening as he colourfully recounts his mishaps to a sceptical, beefy military interrogator wondering where he’s been for the last three years. The art, music and narration are all top-notch, enlivening the voyage with humour, beauty and the odd moment of wonder. It’s been a while since I had such a positive time staring at my phone.

Little Orpheus is scarcely more complicated than the 80s classic, Pitfall!, requiring little more from the player than running from left to right and jumping at the right times. But from these simple actions, developer the Chinese Room constructs humorous, exciting scenes. In the first episode you’re dashing behind rocks to evade the beady, amber eye of a T rex; by the fourth, you’ve discovered a new species of humanoid and ventured through the squelchy innards of a whale (“A glade of polyps and globules!” enthuses Ivanovich). Each of the eight episodes, which are about the length of the average commute, takes you to a different splendid location. The art is top-notch, with vibrant colours that recall old sci-fi adventure novels; and a jaunty, orchestral score adds cinematic verve to Ivanovich’s antics.

Such a grand adventure is not optimally suited to the dimensions of a phone screen. The vistas are better enjoyed on an iPad or a Mac, when your fingers don’t obscure so much of them. I found that my gestures were sometimes confused, sending Ivan flying from a dangling rope to his death rather than shimmying up it, but I was having such fun that I hardly minded having to replay a few sections because of a fat-fingered fumble. The final episodes are more demanding and, therefore, more frustrating, but have courage, comrade – this is a journey that’s worth seeing through.
• Little Orpheus is available now on Apple Arcade.
