La Trobe Uni builds AI ‘Explorer’ to help Arts students visualise a career – Cloud- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

La Trobe University is giving prospective Arts students a Netflix-inspired experience they can use to select a major from the more than 50 on offer and to then “know what career outcomes that would give them”.
Chief technology officer Stuart Hildyard revealed the existence of the Bachelor of Arts Explorer at IBM’s Think 2020 conference overnight.
Hildyard said the Explorer is currently at a minimum viable product (MVP) stage.
It was designed and built on an IBM cloud and AI stack in the IBM Garage, which is essentially a network of physical hubs aimed at helping customers to quickly turn an idea into a product.
“A Bachelor of Arts is one of the major courses universities offer, and the problem is that our Arts course has over 50 majors,” Hildyard said.
“Arts students know they want to study Arts, but they don’t know what major they want to do.
“A lot of those majors, like archaeology for example, they will never really come across in their studies at high school.
“What we found is traditionally, Arts students would apply for the course [but] often they would drop out, or not go through the acceptance process because they just got confused about what to study.”
“What we saw with the benefits of the Bachelor of Arts Explorer was that the students were able to actually select their major and know what career outcomes that would give them.”
Hildyard said the Explorer was built over a four-week period.
He said the idea was to “present a Netflix-type view to the students, where they could scroll through and go, ‘I want to know about that major’, and based on a series of questions like, ‘Do you like critical thinking? Do you like reading? Are you interested in this?’, it’s pulling in information.”
Prospective students could then ‘favourite’ a major that appealed to them.
Although early days, Hildyard said the University had already seen higher offer acceptance rates in Arts, which it attributed to the existence of the Explorer.
“The University absolutely has a priority around student acquisition,” Hildyard said.
“What we’ve been able to track through the use of this is that … after the students have their offer for a Bachelor of Arts  the acceptance rate is absolutely tracking higher than it has in any previous year. 
“The only thing that we changed [in that space] was to deliver the Bachelor of Arts Explorer. 
“I think that’s a great outcome and it fits into our ‘enabling student acquisition’ piece, which is critical to our revenue.”
Hildyard said the University had bigger aims for the ‘Explorer’ technology – even at the project’s outset – though it had honed in on the specific Arts use case through its work with IBM Garage.
“Our bigger vision is to actually build something out for the university that can lay across our key courses and provide similar information,” Hildyard said.

How the govt plans to create a formal APS tech career track – Strategy – Training & Development- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The Australian Public Service Commission has settled on a pathway to help uplift digital capability across government, releasing a new strategy to establish a formal APS tech career track.
Commissioner Peter Woolcott announced the APS digital professional stream strategy on Thursday to “drive a cohesive and engaged digital profession through building digital expertise”.
A digital profession, as well as a separate data profession, was called for in the root-and-branch review of the APS last year to “ensure the APS has the skills required to develop, build and maintain ICT systems”.
The review had found that “the APS lacks the ability to attract, retain and nurture high-quality talent and the level of consistent leadership across the whole of government required for a culture of innovation and change”.
The new strategy, which was developed with the Digital Transformation Agency, aims to address this “digital skills shortage”, outlining both what has already been done and what lies ahead to develop a digital profession.
It expects to do this by introducing a “structured way to build and uplift the core digital expertise … and specialist expertise in digital roles” through “setting professional standards, implementing digital career pathways and addressing digital skills gaps”.
While there are currently an estimated 10,000 people working in digital and ICT roles across the APS, as many as “100,000 additional technology workers” are expected to be needed by the government by 2024, according to the strategy.
To drive forward change, Digital Transformation Agency chief Randall Brugeaud has been appointed digital head of profession to “champion the digital professional stream and collaboration across agencies”.  
Brugeaud will work with heads of departments and agencies to “embed and showcase good digital capability”, though he will have no “formal authority over agency head decision making”.
He will also be supported by a digital leaders reference group composed of senior chief information officers, as well as senior officials from central agencies.  
An immediate area of concern will be “advanced digital skills such as embedding cloud environments”, which the APSC and DTA have only recently begun to address through the capability cubed pilot under the ‘building digital capability program’.
The strategy will also see a digital professions code of service developed to “ensure those in the profession meet thresholds for skills, attitude and aptitude” and a common framework for skills assessment.
Digital professionals will also increasingly play a key role in vetting prospective applicants for leadership roles in a bid to increase attributes that are attuned to a changing APS.
This will build on existing initiatives like the ‘leading in a digital age program’ for senior executive service (SES) staff, which aims to increase “digital ways of thinking and working”.
“Our leaders need to show their own abilities to lead well in new, changing and ambiguous situations, using their ability for whole-of-systems thinking in an adaptive and agile public service,” the strategy states.
“There are some key roles where we need relevant professional credentials. Agency Heads will be encouraged to include digital professionals on selection panels for key leadership roles. They will be professional advisers to the selection panel.”
Specialist communities will also for certain disciplines like cloud and service design will also be introduced to increase on-the-job learning and improve networking.
Woolcott said the coronavirus pandemic, which has uprooted long-established ways of working, has highlighted the importance of digital and IT skills, which are expected to only become more important.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored, in the sharpest way possible, the need for the APS to be more joined up and agile with digital technology if we are to effectively meet community expectations,” he said.

Less than 50% of Women Studying STEM-related Courses Consider it a Career, report says | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

TechCabal has released the Nigerian Women in Tech Report which examines the distribution and level of involvement of women in Nigeria’s technology and STEM fields.

The report, which is available for free download, looks at the gaps that exist in women participation, show challenges and highlight recommendations for improvement. It also puts the spotlight on 21 women entrepreneurs, c-suite executives and 7 women developers working in the Nigerian technology industry.
“Notwithstanding decades of progress towards workplace equality, women remain underrepresented in Nigeria’s technology workforce. We’ve embarked on this report to showcase the arena where women in technology play across Nigeria, and the contribution to the big picture when we look at it through the lens of STEM,” said Tomiwa Aladekomo, CEO at Big Cabal Media.

Key findings in the report:

More than 65% of the female STEM university students surveyed applied for those courses as a result of their passion and interests as against being pressured by their parents to do so or because it was the only available option.
59% of the survey respondents admit to facing challenges in their course of study, however, over 75% of the same respondents say that the challenges are not gender-related. Despite the challenges faced, 54% of them feel happy about studying the course.
Less than 50% of the female students surveyed see themselves having a STEM-related career in the next 5 – 10 years.
The majority of the founders surveyed – 55.6% said that the challenges they faced were gender-based while many of the developers surveyed didn’t feel this way. 83% of the latter felt that their challenges weren’t gender-based.
The number and percentage of female developers in the tech companies we surveyed are increasing with each passing year, which shows that there is a growing interest in women’s participation in the tech field.

My Career Just Got Hacked: Rana Robillard Joins Tempemail- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

My career just got hacked.. and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Turns out, getting your career hacked* can be exactly what you need to re-energize your work life and ensure it aligns with your passion and personal values.
