Signs of the Sojourner review – playing cards in faraway places | Games – Blog – 10 minute

Card games typically pit players against each other. Signs of the Sojourner is more like matching dominoes, asking players to lay out their cards to map conversations with those they meet along the road. The game follows a travelling trader who follows their mother’s routes after her death, crisscrossing the continent to bring goods home to their village shop. Every stop is a chance to meet new people, take in the sights, and help others out.
The place descriptions are the game’s high point, evoking that traveller’s high of feeling out of place and full of wonder. This world is tough, ravaged by climate change, but its inhabitants are compassionate and resourceful. Events happen according to a calendar schedule, whether you’re there to witness them or not. You can’t do everything, but locals will chat about what you missed – and the game lasts only a few hours, so you are welcome to explore again in a fresh save.
Your deck of cards determines how you relate to those you meet, and it’s constantly changing. Every conversation offers a new card, topic or phrase that replaces an old one. Just as slang spreads through a community or you begin to see things differently by hanging out with a different crowd, new cards offer opportunities to rub along better with those whose company you seek. But this can alienate you from those you leave at home, especially when useless fatigue cards start filling up the deck from long journeys.
Boiling conversations down to a card game doesn’t always work perfectly. But it evokes the material unfamiliarity of faraway places, and the learning inherent in travel. Plus, failing in conversations doesn’t mean failing entirely; you move on, with a little sting of awkwardness and maybe a small gap in your travelling salesperson’s inventory.
With real travel compromised right now, tagging along with Signs of the Sojourner’s caravan is one way to experience the sights and smells of new streets.

Russian Hacker Gets 9-Year Jail for Running Online Shop of Stolen Credit Cards – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

A United States federal district court has finally sentenced a Russian hacker to nine years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty of running two illegal websites devoted to facilitating payment card fraud, computer hacking, and other crimes.
Aleksei Yurievich Burkov, 30, pleaded guilty in January this year to two of the five charges against him for credit card fraud—one count of access device fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit access device fraud, identity theft, computer intrusions, wire fraud, and money laundering.

Burkov admitted to operating a website named Cardplanet that was dedicated to buying and selling stolen credit card and debit card data for anywhere between $2.50 and $10 per payment card, depending on the card type, origin, and availability of card owner information.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Cardplanet hosted roughly 150,000 payment card details between 2009 and 2013, most of which belonged to U.S. citizens and used to make over $20 million in fraudulent purchases.
“Aleksei’s massive fraud victimized hundreds of thousands of people and resulted in over $20 million in losses,” said G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
“Tackling global cybercrime means holding accountable leaders like Burkov who have allowed cybercrime to become organized and hyper-specialized. I want to thank our prosecutors and investigative partners for their terrific work on this complex case.”
In addition to Cardplanet, Burkov ran another invite-only forum website for elite cybercriminals where they advertised stolen personal identifying information (PII), malicious software, and other criminal services, like money laundering and hacking.
To become a member of Burkov’s cybercrime forum, one needed to pay $5,000 as insurance and three existing members to vouch for their excellent reputation among cybercriminals.

According to the court documents, such measures were put in place to “keep law enforcement from accessing Burkov’s cybercrime forum and to ensure that members of the forum honored any deals made while conducting business on the forum.”
Burkov was arrested at Ben-Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, Israel, in December 2015 and extradited to the U.S. in November 2019 after he lost his appeals against extradition in the Israeli Supreme Court and the Israeli High Court of Justice.
Before his extradition to the U.S., Russia also offered Israel a deal to release Burkov in exchange for freeing Israeli citizen Naama Issachar, imprisoned in Russia for drug offenses, but Israel refused to release Burkov and approved the U.S. extradition request.
Burkov had faced a maximum of 15 years in prison for the charges he admitted in January, but today the U.S. federal district court judge sentenced him to nine years in prison.

Hackers Using Google Analytics to Bypass Web Security and Steal Credit Cards – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Researchers reported on Monday that hackers are now exploiting Google’s Analytics service to stealthily pilfer credit card information from infected e-commerce sites.
According to several independent reports from PerimeterX, Kaspersky, and Sansec, threat actors are now injecting data-stealing code on the compromised websites in combination with tracking code generated by Google Analytics for their own account, letting them exfiltrate payment information entered by users even in conditions where content security policies are enforced for maximum web security.
“Attackers injected malicious code into sites, which collected all the data entered by users and then sent it via Analytics,” Kaspersky said in a report published yesterday. “As a result, the attackers could access the stolen data in their Google Analytics account.”

The cybersecurity firm said it found about two dozen infected websites across Europe and North and South America that specialized in selling digital equipment, cosmetics, food products, and spare parts.

Bypassing Content Security Policy

The attack hinges on the premise that e-commerce websites using Google’s web analytics service for tracking visitors have whitelisted the associated domains in their content security policy (CSP).

CSP is an added security measure that helps detect and mitigate threats stemming from cross-site scripting vulnerabilities and other forms of code injection attacks, including those embraced by various Magecart groups.
The security feature allows webmasters to define a set of domains the web browser should be allowed to interact with for a specific URL, thereby preventing the execution of untrusted code.

“The source of the problem is that the CSP rule system isn’t granular enough,” PerimeterX’s VP of research Amir Shaked said. “Recognizing and stopping the above malicious JavaScript request requires advanced visibility solutions that can detect the access and exfiltration of sensitive user data (in this case, the user’s email address and password).”
To harvest data using this technique, all that is needed is a small piece of JavaScript code that transmits the collected details like credentials and payment information through an event and other parameters that Google Analytics uses to uniquely identify different actions performed on a site.
“Administrators write *.google-analytics.com into the Content-Security-Policy header (used for listing resources from which third-party code can be downloaded), allowing the service to collect data. What’s more, the attack can be implemented without downloading code from external sources,” Kaspersky noted.

To make the attacks more covert, the attackers also ascertain if developer mode — a feature that’s often used to spot network requests and security errors, among other things — is enabled in the visitor’s browser, and proceed only if the result of that check is negative.

A “Novel” Campaign Since March

In a separate report released yesterday, Netherlands-based Sansec, which tracks digital skimming attacks, uncovered a similar campaign since March 17 that delivered the malicious code on several stores using a JavaScript code that’s hosted on Google’s Firebase.
For obfuscation, the actor behind the operation created a temporary iFrame to load an attacker-controlled Google Analytics account. The credit card data entered on payment forms is then encrypted and sent to the analytics console from where it’s recovered using the encryption key earlier used.
Given the widespread use of Google Analytics in these attacks, countermeasures like CSP will not work if attackers take advantage of an already allowed domain to hijack sensitive information.

“A possible solution would come from adaptive URLs, adding the ID as part of the URL or subdomain to allow admins to set CSP rules that restrict data exfiltration to other accounts,” Shaked concluded.
“A more granular future direction for strengthening CSP direction to consider as part of the CSP standard is XHR proxy enforcement. This will essentially create a client-side WAF that can enforce a policy on where specific data field[s] are allowed to be transmitted.”
As a customer, unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do to safeguard yourself from formjacking attacks. Turning on developer mode in browsers can help when making online purchases.
But it’s essential that you watch out for any instances of unauthorized purchases or identity theft.

NSW photo cards next on Dominello’s digital hit list – Strategy – Software- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Photo card holders in NSW will be able to ditch their physical ID for a digital alternative later this year and join the more than 1.4 million motorists already in the state’s digital licence ecosystem.
The NSW government is preparing to offer card holders a digital alternative to the physical photo card, which is held by around 1.6 million people across the state.
Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello took to social media on Wednesday to reveal that the alternative form of photo identification was next on Service NSW’s hit list.
“I will digitise the NSW Photo Card this year – I will keep you posted,” he said in a post on LinkedIn.
The commitment to digitise photo ID cards this year follows the successful state-wide launch of digital driver’s licences last November after two years of testing.
More than 1.4 million motorists – or 25 percent of NSW’s approximately 6.2 million drivers – have opted for an electronic vehicle licence in the first seven months.
This is more than twice the number of people Service NSW had estimated would adopt the licence in the first 12 months.
The digital licence, which is available through the Service NSW app, offers a range of privacy enhancing features, including holograms to ensure the ‘liveness’ of the identity document.
Digital photo cards were originally slated to become available to citizens alongside boat driver and recreation fishing licenses in 2017, well before the launch of digital driver’s licences.
However, they are much more similar to the driver’s licence than other licences, offering the same security features and photo identification.
Other digital cards currently available through the Service NSW app are for responsible service of alcohol, responsible conduct of gambling and working with children.
Service NSW is also continuing to develop a ‘copy solution’ as an alternative method for businesses to confirm an identity in situations that require a photocopy of a driver’s licence.
The solution is aimed at boosting acceptance of the opt-in electronic vehicle licence, which until now has largely been restricted to police checks and gaining entry to licenced venues.

Gamers are ditching Radeon graphics cards over driver issues – Blog – 10 minute

As I planned and was beginning to run our next big graphics card benchmark test, I felt I had to shift gears to discuss AMD’s driver woes after a recent poll we ran on the community. We’ve already reached out to AMD for a statement and they have responded and we’ll cover that towards the end of this article.
At this point it’s no secret AMD is struggling to iron out some driver related issues with their Radeon RX 5000 GPUs. Typically we like to give both AMD and Nvidia a few months to iron out bugs when releasing a new GPU series, especially when they’re based on a new or mostly new architecture, as was the case with Turing and Navi.
Nvidia went through a fair share of teething issues with Turing, but we think it’s fair to say they went on top of any major issues very quickly. AMD, on the other hand, has had seven months to sort out Navi, and by the looks of it, they just haven’t been able to deliver. We’ve received countless reports of crashing, flickering issues, and of course, the black screen bug.
I should preface this by saying we haven’t run into any major issues after countless hours of testing new Radeon GPUs in our labs. Around 4-5 months ago I ran into the black screen bug once. We’re not even sure if it’s the same “black screen bug” people are complaining about, or if the two are even related. My issue was seen when updating the display driver, after a reset the Windows desktop wasn’t seen again, I was instead presented with a blank screen every time Windows loaded.
The fix was to hard reboot until it prompted me to load Windows into safe-mode. Then I used the Display Driver Uninstaller tool (DDU) to remove the bad driver install. I was able to load back into Windows 10 normally, clean installed the driver, and after that I never saw the issue again.

The only other issue we’ve encountered at some point is the green or pink screen bug after installing new drivers, though I haven’t seen that one for at least the last few driver updates. Not as big of a nuissance, a reboot fixed that every time.
It’s worth noting that Tim hasn’t used a 5700 series graphics card as a daily driver, so his experience is more limited to testing on a clean system. Though he’s been running extensive game tests spanning several hours that cover pretty much every quality setting in games, and not a single hiccup in all that testing.
As for me, I’ve been using the Radeon 5700 XT in my main rig for about 4 months now and in that time I’ve only had a single system lockup which forced a hard reboot and I don’t even know if it was related to the graphics card. For the first few months I coupled the Radeon with a Core i9-9900K, and then recently moved to Threadripper with the 3960X and a fresh install of Windows 10, no issues as yet.

Since we bought about half a dozen 5700 XT cards for testing, we’ve also fitted out my family’s gaming systems with 5700 XTs, and after a few months of operation, neither have suffered any glaring issues. With that kind of experience, we’re a little puzzled as to why so many people are having problems, but of course, with nearly unlimited combination of systems and software setups, far too many people are reporting problems and many are telling us similar stories, so there’s clearly an issue at play, or series of issues.
AMD has publicly acknowledged these bugs as “known issues” in their 20.0.3 driver release notes, stating the following.

Some Radeon RX 5700 series graphics users may intermittently experience a black screen while gaming or on desktop. A potential temporary workaround is disabling hardware acceleration in applications running in the background such as web browsers or Discord.

Also, they claim to have solved the following.

An intermittent black screen or loss of display may occur when performing parallel actions such as web browsing, gaming or watching video.
An intermittent black screen or loss of display may occur when the system is left idle at desktop.

Meanwhile, in the latest 20.2.1 release notes they still acknowledge the random black screen issue with the disabled hardware acceleration workaround. They also say: “A black screen may occur when performing a mode change with a limited number of displays on Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products.”
In other words, several months after launch, AMD is still working on fixing the black screen bug. As we understand, if the situation has improved a lot, it still persists for some users. Given we haven’t run into any major bug ourselves, we decided to run a poll on HUB’s YouTube community channel to try and work out how many AMD users are affected and get some feedback on the problems they’re encountering.

Nearly half of all AMD users who took part in the poll responded ‘Yes’, they are having or have had serious issues with their Radeon GPU. The poll suggests that 48% of all AMD users have suffered major issues, while we see less than half that figure for Nvidia users at 22%.
The poll was conducted as a general question and we didn’t target Navi specifically, but based on the comments that went below the poll, most AMD users claimed to be running a 5700 series graphics card.
Naturally, there’s going to be some dodgy votes in there, but we don’t believe a few fanboys are going to skew the data too heavily after gathering over 49,000 votes. That’s a large enough sample size to take as evidence that AMD has a major problem they need to address.
Because we haven’t experienced these issues ourselves, we’ve been unable to troubleshoot them on our own. One educated guess is this stems from a hardware compatibility issue which is more and more likely based on the data and feedback we received from our recent poll. Another possibility is that a lot of these problems could be caused by bad driver installs.

Over the years we’ve run into numerous issues with AMD, and sometimes Nvidia drivers, after updates. The solution is always to reboot into safe-mode, remove all display drivers, then load back into Windows and install the driver package from scratch. AMD’s drivers appear especially sensitive and this has been the case for as long as I can remember.
As for the theory regarding hardware compatibility, don’t be surprised if AMD doesn’t have the ability to test the degree of hardware they need to before release, making a good portion of the population beta testers. It’s not an unacceptable approach, assuming they can squash bugs as they crop up in a timely manner, but unfortunately this is not something they’ve managed properly and has lead to Radeon customers having a crappy experience. This situation will result in a death spiral for the Radeon Technologies Group if they can’t get a handle on the problem. In order for them to detect bugs they need a large user base submitting crash reports. But if they fail to address issues in a timely manner as they are reported, users will seek alternatives and I can’t tell you how many people have told me they sold their 5700 XT and replaced it with a GeForce graphics card.
Drivers have always been an uphill battle for AMD, but at times they’ve managed to get on top of things and get the most out of their GPUs. 4th-gen GCN is a good example, even though it took them about 12 months before they squeezed all the possible performance out of the hardware, stability never seemed to be an issue… on the fourth iteration of that architecture.
Over the years we’ve heard countless stories about how AMD has been bullied by mean old Nvidia, and while some of the stories are true, I can’t help but feel AMD’s been kicking AMD the hardest.
Over the years we’ve heard countless stories about how AMD has been bullied by mean old Nvidia, and while some of the stories are true, I can’t help but feel AMD’s been kicking AMD the hardest. Back in the good old days when AMD had superior graphics tech it was let down by drivers. Popular titles such as League of Legends were well known to play poorly with Radeon GPUs, suffering from stuttering and poor performance relative to the Nvidia competition.
Getting back to the upcoming GeForce RTX 2060 vs. Radeon 5600 XT battle (article incoming!), with these two products so close in terms of price and performance, we’re going to find it really hard to recommend the Radeon GPU.
For AMD to charge comparable prices, they have to offer a similar or superior experience than Nvidia, and right now they’re failing at that. It seems many of you agree as we dive into our Amazon sales data. Basically whenever competing AMD and Nvidia products come in at a similar cost per frame, readers always seem to favor Nvidia. We saw this with the RX 5700 and RTX 2060 when both were priced at $350. Worst case scenario, having someone buy a RX 5700 series graphics card only to get fed up with issues months later and sell or return it for a GeForce product is devastating for the company and the user. No doubt, it’ll be very hard for that customer to buy a Radeon on the next upgrade cycle.
~$350 GPU sales share since July 2019 – HUB Amazon data

Rather than launching more Navi-based GPUs, AMD should have taken a step back and addressed the problems with the RX 5700 series before pushing out more products that rely on the same buggy drivers. Long term, it seems quite clear that rushing out these products before fixing major bugs will do more harm than good. It also has to be placing a huge amount of pressure on board partners who have to deal with unnecessary RMA requests.
Reading though your feedback on the poll (1,700 comments and counting), the main issue appears to be the “black screen bug.” This issue sees the display randomly turn black, as if the monitor had turned off, and there is no way to recover the system without a hard reboot. Those reporting this bug say it happens at random: when gaming, when not gaming, and even when the system is sitting idle.
There are also a number of users reporting workarounds to solve the black screen, a combination of the following: Disabling hardware acceleration as suggested by AMD, editing the TdrDelay in the registry, disabling PCIe link state power management, and even installing the Intel iGPU driver if they’re using an Intel CPU with an iGPU. Having said that, apart from having to execute a clean driver install using DDU in safe-mode, we haven’t had to do any of the above to use, test and successfully benchmark RX 5700 GPUs properly. That is using different graphics cards and in completely different hardware.
The reason we haven’t been all over AMD about this issue until now is, as I’ve said more than once, we haven’t run into any problems ourselves. It wasn’t until the poll that we got a better sense of just how widespread these problems are.
We’ve also spoken with a few retailers to see if they’re seeing issues with 5700 XT boards and we’ve received some interesting reports. Basically the return rate for 5700 XT’s is more than 5x that of competing Nvidia products and when they get these systems back with various reported issues, they’re unable to replicate them due to their random nature.

It may be part of the reason why we often see GeForce graphics cards dominating pre-builts. That’s another example of why Nvidia ends up doing so much better — they aren’t bribing these retailers to predominantly use their hardware as some would suggest — the retailers are simply trying to avoid unhappy customers along with the costs associated with having systems returned.
We have reached out to AMD, informing them of our poll and asked if they cared to comment. Here’s their official statement:

Stability of our drivers is a key priority for our software team. They are monitoring forum discussions closely, including the black screen and other issues users are reporting, and we are actively identifying and working on fixes. As soon as we have more information to share, we will let you know. We encourage users to report issues they are experiencing here ‘amd.com/report’ so that our team can investigate.

AMD acknowledging the issues is a positive. But working to fix them on a 7 month old product is not. The hardware itself is good and as you know we love the pressure it puts on the graphics card market, so we end up paying less for more capable GPUs. Hopefully at this point they’re throwing every possible resource at this problem and shortly we’ll have a proper fix. Until then, it’s going to be hard to recommend Radeon graphics cards when competing with Nvidia at a similar price to performance ratio.

Intel’s New Graphic Cards Could Crush Nvidia’s Best | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Intel could be preparing to release a monster card that would dwarf the output of Nvidia’s top of the range options, cards like Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, reports Digital Trends.
Documents from an internal presentation show details of Intel’s plans, their Xe graphics architecture, for their new monster. The cards supposedly run on a GPU with a thermal design power (TDP) of 500W, more than any other current retail graphics card.
The next best thing is the RTX 2080 Ti, the best cards on the market currently, which use only 250W. Making Intel’s supposedly new cards twice as powerful, a fathomless thought to be sure.
What’s the Plan?
Intel’s designs specify plans for the architecture setup and power specs of 7 different cards, writes My Broadband. At the very top of these cards is the 500W variant, and following this are cards rated at 300W, 150W and 75W TDPs.
Speculations abound that Intel will use ‘tile’ modules for their new cards, as well as a multi-die system packaged with Foveros 3D stacking. Digital Trends notes that the technique could be similar to ADM’s cards and their Zen processors.
Intel has previously showcased another of their cards that use the same Xe architecture, the DG1 – Discrete Graphics – at CES 2020. Although no information about the cards was given, namely on clock speeds GPU core count, VRAM, or other technical specifications, the cards were shown running Destiny 2 and Warframe in 1080p at 60fps.
What does this mean?
It means that Intel is suspected to release about two cards that would crush their competition as of right now.
The bottom line is that extremely high TDP is a clue into the massive processing power of these cards, and the inclusion of Foveros stacking, a means to provide a much greater ability to mix and match processor components with optimal manufacturing processes allow for higher performance for much lower power outputs. This will make your games run beautiful and fast.

JPMorgan Chase finds new CMO in its co-brand cards department- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

JPMorgan Chase has promoted Leslie Gillin, president of co-brand credit cards, to chief marketing officer – a role previously filled by the recently-promoted Kristin Lemkau.
Gillin is somewhat of a veteran in the financial marketing space.
She previously held the chief marketing officer title at Citi’s consumer business from 2014 until 2016 after working in various direct and CRM positions at Bank of America and MBNA Europe.
She has headed up co-brand cards at JPMorgan Chase since February 2017. In a statement, the company said she has led the co-brand credit card business to become the largest co-brand portfolio in the world.
“Under Leslie’s leadership, our co-brand card portfolio has enjoyed phenomenal success, with double-digit growth in revenue, outstandings and new cardmembers,” said Gordon Smith, co-president and chief operating officer for JPMorgan Chase.
“I’m confident that her knowledge, energy and creativity will now serve the whole firm and all our customers very well.”
Gillin’s predecessor, Kristin Lemkau, was named chief executive of the company’s new US wealth management division last December. She had held the chief marketing officer job since 2014 and was named the Ad Club of New York’s marketer of the year for 2019, praised for her ability to drive business results.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled that Leslie is our CMO,” Lemkau said. “She’s an amazing marketing talent and all around great human. She has deep P&L and marketing experience, and is a highly respected people leader for the team.
“I’m excited to keep working with her in my new job to help grow the wealth management business. I know she will crush this job.”
